More than 6 in 10 voters say the economy is extremely important to their vote.

(CNN) — The nation's economic woes appear to be impacting the presidential race more than at any previous time this election cycle, according to a poll released Tuesday — a troubling sign for John McCain, who continues to receive low marks over the issue from a majority of voters.

Potentially more damaging news for the Arizona senator's White House hopes: more than three-quarters of voters in a new survey from CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation say the United States is in a recession, and 40 percent say another depression is likely to hit the country within the next year.

Watch: McCain says Obama has given 'wrong' answers on taxes and other issues

According to the new poll, 61 percent of registered voters say the economy is extremely important to their vote, a jump of three points since June and more than 10 points higher the next most important issue on voters' minds, terrorism.

The findings highlight an unfavorable political landscape for McCain, whose party has controlled the White House for the last eight years. Voters have also consistently ranked the Arizona senator lower than his Democratic rival on the question of which candidate is better-equipped to steer the country through the economic crisis.

"Economic jitters are likely to benefit Barack Obama, because Obama has consistently outscored John McCain on economic issues," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Fifty-six percent say that Obama would do a better job than McCain on the economy, and 63 percent say he would do a better job than McCain on providing help to the middle class."

A CNN/ORC poll released earlier Tuesday also showed two-thirds of voters said they're scared about the way things are going and three in four said the current conditions in the country are stressing them out.

"If Americans are angry about the state of the country, they're probably more angry at the Republicans than the Democrats, since the GOP has controlled the White House for the past eight years," Holland said.

The latest poll numbers make clear just how different the 2008 political climate is than it was four years ago, during President Bush’s successful re-election bid. In a late October poll that year, fewer than 4 in 10 voters said the economy was an extremely important concern, while nearly 50 percent identified terrorism as the most salient issue facing the nation.

That playing field would certainly would have been friendlier to McCain, who has long received high marks from voters on issues of national security.

"Since McCain is still seen as the best candidate to handle terrorism and Iraq, he might be doing much better in the polls today if the economy hadn't muscled national security issues out of the top spot," Holland said.

If 2008 resembles any recent political year it's 1992, when roughly the same number of Americans thought the country was headed in the wrong direction largely because of the economic recession that year. It was that issue that is largely credited with helping then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton's defeat of President George Bush Sr.

"In 1992 it was the economy stupid that got Bill Clinton elected. When Americans are in a bad mood it does have political consequences," CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider said. "The angrier you feel the more likely you are to vote for Obama."

John McCain = American Socialist.
Lets be honest, $1 trillion to nationalize our banks of mortgages. Where have I head that before? Who nationalized all the banks and mortgages?
Answer: Cuba and Iran.

McCain was cleared of any wrong doing by the DEMS themselves. Canada had a federal election last week … the Liberal Party had their poorest performance in the polls since 1867 and they have finally realized that they need to go back to the drawing board and re-define themselves.

It definitely appears that the Republican Party is in the same boat. John McCain and the old GOP guard is going to have to step aside to let a renewal happen. If they don't, the Republicans are going to become even more of an American joke … just as the Liberals are a walking mockery in Canada.

To Mccain: Bush's tax cuts don't work. He's been in office for 8 years and small businesses have suffered across the country. If you are a small business owner ask yourself are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?

The media coverage for this campaign is the most unprofessional group in the history of the US. All of you so called journalist should be ashamed of yourself. The title seems to say that the only chance Obama has against McCain is a bad economy and with the spread the wealth around answer from Obama socialist ideology the race is getting tighter. Obama has lost all double digit leads he had and is slipping in Florida and Ohio and the race has become a dead heat nationally. Biden who forgot that there were journalists in a seattle fund raising event has put the notion that Obama's inexperience will bring about a major crisis, It makes you wonder who is getting bad news, Obama or McCain?

Americans are responsible for our current situation. Americans entered into loans that they knew they couldn't pay. American bankers and lenders began this fiasco with the bubble. Americans continue to incur debt without a flicker of guilt. Americans supported the bailout. People, it's our country, we vote. Pull your head out for a second and understand this will be a painful process. Either McCain or Obama, two people I am very proud to call fellow Americans, will address the matter; however, as a country, we will not achieve what we once were until we stop bickering over inane issues the talking heads are feeding you and unite, as a country.

Think of it this way…for every $100 OVER 250,000 you are going to have to pay an additional $3. If I had to guess…you spend more than that $3 on a cup of coffee each morning!!

Quit whining and take a look at the bigger picture–please for the sake of our country and our future!!

a large part of my vote alone is that mccain wants to build 26 nuclear power plants. how else are we supposed to have energy to fuel this new wave of hybrid and plug in cars that they both want? or maybe we could go with obama's "i think we should LOOK INTO drilling offshore."

hows that for creating jobs?

Joe Kiloz, you are terribly misinformed. If your comment is a reflection of a typical McCain supporter's basic understanding of Obama's agenda, then it is incredibly inaccurate. Let me clarify a few points for you:

Firstly, aspiring to make $250K (or anything else for that matter) doesn't mean that you will be taxed accordingly. Actually making $250K does mean that you will have a tax burden in proportion to your earnings just like the rest of America. That doesn't mean the you aren't feeling the pinch of the economic crisis like the rest of us, but it does mean that you're probably not having as hard a time as the guy that makes $25K, who really needs a tax credit just for basic survival these days.

Secondly, no one's wealth is being "taken away" in order to be given to someone else. That's just a lie, or, excuse me — that's just the usual inaccurate Republican spin to scare people and create a very divisive spirit among the "haves" and the "have nots" in this country.

Lastly, this is the United States of America. No one is ever jailed for just complaining about anything. I don't know where you got that one from…

"Socialism" helped to get us out of the Great Depression. "Socialism" keeps us driving on a good network of roads without paying "market toll value". "Socialism" is what keeps energy investment in what's good for the country, not for other people's profits. Etc.

No matter what you want to believe, we already live in a mixed economy, and it's a good thing, because if left alone, the free market will only benefit the wealthy at the expense of the greater society. The day "socialism" became a bad word was a disaster for the US.

It is a "bad word" because people do not understand it, that we already have it, and that is has been beneficial. And maybe if we let it have a chance in places like Latin America instead of killing it, instead of succumbing to irrational fear, we'd see good examples.

Hypocracy has no bounds   October 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

kyle   October 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

This whole “socialist” argument makes me laugh to no end. Anyone who calls Obama a socialist for taking tax dollars and then distributing them is a complete fool or has no idea what a tax is. Where do you think the taxes you pay now go? That’s what taxes are for!!!!!! The government collects taxes to pay for the services you take for granted. They also go to welfare, to help the poor and the needy. Believe it or not but there are some people out there who don’t have jobs, homes or any means of making money, and like the dirty “socialists” we are we give up some of our tax dollars to help them. This is just another lame argument directed at the ignorant to distract from the fact that McCain has nothing new to tell us on the economy that we haven’t seen in the last 8 years. No one cares about Ayres, no one cares about Obama’s pastor, and to imply that he is un-American and pals around with terrorists is bad politics and it isn’t working. Just the fact that his campaign doesn’t realize this shows how out of touch his party is with the majority of America.

Someone posted this great point to consider: "Country first" on the podium. Which country, Palin? The Republic of Alaska?

McCain is not "my friend."
And with what he & S.Palin preach, Senator Obama needs to be secured in a "Pope-Mobile." Let us not forget what happened to A. Lincoln & JFK. I fear for Obama's life in this campaign of twisted facts.
McCain's demeanor overall is "not presidential. There is something sort of neurotic about his presentation/appearance and the sneaky tone of his voice that is creepy. It's possible that he resents Obama's vitality, youth, and REFINEMENT. Also McCain's deterioration and age is very conspicuous – he totters around like rigormortus is setting in. He might have a stroke any moment, and that is scary – and he has not chosen a capable VP to take his place.

Strange. In the past, a voter could decipher a clear message from both sides in a typical election. Raise/Lower taxes, Increase/decrease spending, whatever. This time, the Republicans have not articulated a clear and consise strategy for the future of the country (Confession: haven't been to McCain's website to check for this). The Obama has been very clear (or as clear as they can be in two-minute soundbites) on exactly what they plan to do. And they don't pretend it will make everybody happy. But the Democrats are willing to rest on the merits of their ideas. The Republicans are lost. I haven't heard Policy Discussion #1 in over a week.

There's a promise the Republicans have kept: they will no longer talk policy. They will smear Obama/Biden for the next 13 1/3 days…then it is back to Arizona and Alaska with them.

Stay on message, guys. Don't fall for it!

I hear and see a lot of republicians agree with the way they're running their campaign. I think Palin is showing racism and is playing a dangerous game and really don't care. God forbid if people start getting hanged, bombed, or slain just because someone agrees with Obama/Bidden campaign and if that ticket wins, I fear that someone or a group of people would try to kill Obama. If that happens, I really think that War World III will break lose here in the United States and will take years for America to heal. Let's not forget our history.

ML   October 21st, 2008 12:43 pm ET

We have seen the worst of times here in Ohio. Personally, I have lost a business that was very successful throughout the 90's. We started the business when the tide was rolling for Clinton, and when there was nothing but prosperity and more jobs than the state could fill.

Now, there are never any "we're hiring" signs anywhere! (And no jobs,
either, of course.) The repubs have taken this state and turned it around all right–they have turned it into a wasteland of foreclosures
and broken dreams.

How dare McSame say that the Dems won't help the small businesses!! He want sto tax anyone who offers health care to
their employees! Also, he is not saying exactly how he is going to benefit the small business owners!!

Most small business owners don't make over $250,000 a years, so they WILL GET A TAX CUT under Obama!

The repubs are trying their famous (or "infamous") turn it around lying schemes to try to take Ohio again.

And now they are accursin the Dems (through Acorn) of trying to affect voter fraud!! NOT SO — ACORN MERELY HANDLES VOTOR REGISTRATIONS!! The only problem has been with Acorn employees who have unfortunately put down some untrue names to fill their quota so they can make a paycheck.

Probably, they are desperate like so many others in this state who cannot pay their bills! I agree that this is not right, and they should be reprimanded.

However, the many crimes the repubs have committed against the comman people of the U.S. by falsifying a reason to go to war, and then profiting from the vast amount of money made in Iraq!! No wonder they want so badly for McSame to win and keep the war going!!

Please, vote of the honest party!! Vote for the part that will bring back jobs, and help to get the financials woes of the country back on track, like they did in the 90's when Clinton left office and this country had a SURPLUS, not a HUGE DEFICIT!!

Joe Kiloz is at it again with comments that have little basis in reality. If you make $300,000, file a joint return, and have taxable income of $250,000, then you would pay an extra 3% on the amount of taxable income over $195,000, which is $1,650, or an extra 1/2% of your total income. Hardly, being "taxed to death".

McCain, Palin, Rush, O'Reilly, and the like have stirred up all the lunitics into a frenzy with bogus and overstated claims about the man who is very likely to be our next President. They are doing the country a great disservice – but I am not surprised at all about that.

As is often the case, our military and their supreme premonitions, know best. Today, the entire military establishment gave a unanimous, across-the-board endorsement of Senator McCain's bid for the presidency. Anyone who thinks Barack Obama can or will fix the present state of the economy, is in for a sad fall. Granted that the economy can use some careful steering, it is the least of what we in America will face with a Democrat, or in this case, a Barack Obama, victory. NUMBER ONE is our threat by terrorists. Already, as admitted by Obama's foreign guru, Joe Biden — they're rattling their sabres aimed directly at the new kid on the block. By now, we all know that protection from jihadist terrorists attack, has to be the reigning consideration when voting in this election. Senator Obama means well — and will do the very best he can — but oftentimes that isn't enough. That is where this country stands at this time, and all of us need to pay attention to this fact that McCain's the fixer.

How would McCain and Palin treat all us "anti-americans" who disagree with their politics should they be elected? It is just so sad that with Americans having so much to lose, the McCain campaign is resorting to old and tired scare tactics. It is all they have left. When most of the world's most renowned economists have expressed favorability for the Obama campaign economic plan, the McCain campaign resorts to calling Obama a "Socialist".
People are scared, they are worried about their pensions, their 401k, their kids being able to go to college, and all McCain and his dirty republican cronies are doing is trying to scare people into making a bad choice. I have lost so much respect for the Republican Party. They were never my cup of tea, but I remember a time when they were tough, and told you the truth no matter what. McCain is a lying fool, and he is going to be a very sad and disheartened man come November 4th. I don't think he even believes himself anymore.

J J   October 21st, 2008 12:42 pm ET

The problem is that Obama isnt really going to give ANY tax cuts. As far as I can find, he will raise taxes on those in the 30% tax rate and move it close to 40%. There are no marginal tax cuts for anything lower than that, there will be alleged tax credits but not a cut in marginal tax rates. Also, how can you give 95% of people tax cuts (credits) when between 30-40% of people dont pay any taxes. He doesnt want to raise small business tax but corporate taxes, what about those businesses that are limited corporations or small businesses started as corporations? I imagine there will be job losses as a result of that, not to mention that for the larger businesses they will raise prices to offset the tax increase.

I was very impressed with this panel and this discussion, just sorry that the entire summit wasn't televised.

I wonder why there is no investigative and media reporting about John Mccain’s family slavery connections! If Bill Ayers and Rev Wright is open to the media and John Mccain’s scrutiny, so is this connection. John Mccain never supported Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday! Read the following and please investigate for more information.
The two McCains: Local family traces roots back to plantation owned by Sen. John McCain's great-great-grandfatherby Kristin Longley | The Flint Journal

John W. Adkisson | The Flint JournalSisters Joyce McCain (left) and her sister Lillie McCain descended from slaves that belonged to Sen. John McCain's great-great-grandfather. An annual family reunion now includes both the white and black McCains.
GRAND BLANC, Michigan — Lillie and Joyce McCain harbor no resentment for the presidential candidate who shares their name.

Growing up in Mississippi on what was once the plantation land of Sen. John McCain's great-great-grandfather, the sisters always knew their family had descended from slaves belonging to the McCain family.

But in the modern-era South, the two families — the white McCains and the black McCains — have reached out to each other, united in their shared history and comfortable with their diversity.

McCains newest commercial here shows him explaining that the past 8 years have been rough but that he will change the next 4 by growing investments, creating new jobs..blah blah blah yet he doesn't explain HOW he will do this. I don't trust him especially after picking Palin, she really scares me.

Voted yesterday for Obama/Biden

Sarah Palin supports Alaska independence she made the keynote speech at the AIP's convention so lets see the Vice presidential candidate wants to break up the USA and take a huge chunk of Oil reserves with her. a recipe for economic disaster for the Republic.

Wake up and check the facts See what a anti American VP can do for you.

We just opened our 401k statement for the month, and 3,000 went down the tubes. I am going with Obama, I don't make 250K a year, and the trickle down effect of big business tax cuts have not worked for the last 8yrs, so I doubt it will work for the next four or eight years.

sandy   October 21st, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Maybe if McCain had spent more time on how to fix the economy instead of attacking Obama's character, he might be doing better in the polls. I have never seen a more despicable campaign in my life. I was once a McCain supporter, but after I have witnessed his campaign, i truly believe he is not fit to run this country. The sad part is that there are some who will actually believe his rants and that is why we who don't believe him need to get out and vote. The thoughts of Palin having to become President if something would happen to McCain is utterly frightning.

FAYE, NV   October 21st, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Economy is stressing each of us out and the light seem farther away than closer. McCain has no solution and continue to criticize Obama.

None of us care about Ayer, Rev Wright or whatever else is being blabble out at their rallies. Let us hear what way you, McCain will be different from Bush. It appears there is no different in the policies.

Pain is not qualified for VP and you know that plus your party. You guys are not offering anything but bad taste in this election. McCain you will go down in history as the dirties campaign ever.

Economy is issue #1 for all of us! So what's the McCain response? How about some Rev. Wright! Yeah, McCain understands america…

GREG   October 21st, 2008 12:40 pm ET

From McCain's own lips, just a few months ago, he proudly proclaimed "I've voted with George Bush more than 90% of the time".

And the exclusive battle cry of Republicans, has always been "deregulation" and "privatization". We all know deregulation is the primary cause of the current economic meltdown.

So, yes, McCain is in trouble, and rightfully so.

Scott   October 21st, 2008 12:40 pm ET

40% of Americans expect an economic depression. Gee, I wonder where they got that idea? Perhaps from a press with no understanding of economics, but which wishes to scare the public in a pursuit of ratings? And Obama will be better able to handle the economy based on what? The sage economic advice of the same Mr. Raines who drove our mortgage institutions into the ground and personally pocketed millions of dollars doing so?

Jessie   October 21st, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Senator McCain had the opportunity to make a difference in this country's current state over 8 years in the white house. He did nothing but bobble his head "over 90% of the time" to President Bush. How can we risk another 4 years of economic chaos. Not to mention the unnecessary war and the unnecessary loss of thousands of US and coalition soldiers due to this war.

When a top Republican (Colin Powell) chooses a Democratic candidate, there's something to be said about that. McCain's campaign has focused on creating ignorant rumors about Obama and it has all backfired. Have you all heard his backers? These people are truly ignorant human beings. He is just a sad human being.

Knucklehead   October 21st, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Aspirations are free. If you are successful, however, you must pay into the system that provided the conditions for your success. It isn't a perfect system. It cost us $700 billion to prove that to Joe Kiloz and the rest of the Republicans.

That $700 billion was (or will be) taxpayer money. If you are going to spend, you must tax. I get a chuckle out of all these budget conscious Republicans who have no problem with deficit spending if it helps the rich. And then they call themselves "conservative."

Obama for president   October 21st, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Joe K– you're very ignorant!!!!! A 3% tax on those that make $250, 000 and over won;t break their piggy bank!!! Let's stop exxagerating… These are the people that can afford to be taxed 3%!!!! And noone is saying that they can't continue to make as much money as is possible!

BM   October 21st, 2008 12:39 pm ET

All this time and energy is wasted talking about whether Joe plumber is going to get taxed at a rate of 2% higher than he currently would be if he makes $250 K/year. Thanks to Bush, McCain, and people who think like Palin NOBODY is going to start making more $ any time soon. To anyone who is truly still undecided- just go their websites and read their plans. Its that simple. One guy wants to keep things status quo, and the other guy wants to change things so that giant oil companies dont make all the $ and regular people dont have to pay exorbitant amounts for health insurance (and be taxed on it to boot).

Funny how gas prices have dropped so dramatically, and we havent been drilling…fear of a Democratic Congress and President sure knocked those oil giants back in line!

larry buchas   October 21st, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Just heard Limbaugh declare there is no recession & the economy has been great the past seven years.

Maybe for swine like Rush!

C-Dawg   October 21st, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Barney Frank says deficit spending should take a back seat right now, meaning it's OK.

Bush inherited a recession, (2 quarters negative growth), went through 9/11 and the economy was still doing alright. 4 years ago, McCain brought a bill to increase regulation on Fannie and Freddie, but it was shot down by the Dems (Mr. Frank was a leading voice in that debate).

Congress has been very irresponsible, but in 2006 Nancy Pelosi was going to put an end to the culture of corruption. Since that time things have gotten much worse. Bush does deserve a lot of the blame, but not all of it. To link McCain directly with Bush is intellectually dishonest.

It's fun for most on here just to call names and parrot things they've heard in the media, just go check the Congressional Record or C-SPAN archives.

Clinton had a well balanced administration with a Congress that gave some restraint to his wishes and they compromised. Had Congress held the same tack with Bush, and acted in the best interest of the nation things would be much better now. Revenue has actually gone up with the tax cuts, unfortunately spending has outpaced receipts.

Did Obama not say he would take a second look at rolling back the Bush tax cuts if the economy was still in bad shape? If it's not a good idea in a bad economy, it's probably not a good one in prosperous times.

Republican tax policy has effectively shifted wealth from the bottom 80 percent of the population to the top one percent and racked up enormous national debt in the process.
We need to ask whether this redistribution of wealth upward that accelerated over the past eight years has really served the best interest of this country.
It’s pretty sad to see how easy it is to make regular people feel threatened enough to vote against their own economic interests. The McCain/Palin campaign is embarrasingly unethical and dishonest.

mactexas   October 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

I am really tired of McCain talking about how the higher income businesses and individuals will have to support those who do not even pay income tax. Here is a TAX LESSON. A couple, retired,
both with max S.S., home paid for, some tax free income from investments and an additional $22,000 in taxable investment income, is exempt from paying taxes. In other words, we are those people McCain looks down on. I don't appreciate that one bit. My husband and I worked for 40 years, we invested well, we paid off all our debts, including mortgage prior to retirement. WE PAID OUR SHARE OF TAXES ALREADY, SO IF MC CAIN CONSIDERS ME BENEATH CONTEMPT, THEN HE IS ALSO DEMEANING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF OTHER SENIORS JUST LIKE ME.

Annie, Atlanta   October 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

John McCain is losing in the polls on the economy because he is holding hard and fast to the theory of trickle down economics. A theory that has been a catastrophic failure. And we thought Bush was stupid. He apparently can't hold a candle to McCain.

JB   October 21st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I'd like to know what connection McCain has to Rafaello Follieri, with whom he spent his 70th birthday on Follieri's yacht.

Using the same thought processes the GOP uses, does that make McCain a con man?

Back in 1996 when it became apparent that Dole was not going to beat Clinton, he was advised to tone down the rhetoric and run a campaign that his grandchildren could be proud of. He did just that and he has since become a highly respected member of Congress with friends on both sides of the aisle.

Now when it seems that McCain is not going to beat Obama, he has been advised to run a civil campaign that would serve his legacy. Instead, he ramped upped the attack rhetoric, and is cuing up the Rev. Wright card. McCain has shown himself to be nothing more than a sad, bitter and angry old man.

Everyone keeps talking about higher taxes on those making 250K. Look, right now I pay more than I will if Obama is elected and if someday I end up making 250K or more I will gladly pay the higher taxes. But, for those making 250K to maybe 300K what do you think your taxes are going to go up by…. thousands of dollars? No, you'll pay about $300 to $400 more per year.

Is paying $300 to $400 more per year really worth all this fuss? If it goes to helping our country get back on its feet again I would gladly pay another $1000 more…. if I were in a position to afford it making 300K/year.

Maggie K   October 21st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

CNN says 60% of voters, excuse me but that means that 100% of voters were asked this question…..my phone never rang, so there goes their theory of the amount of voters that reply to their silly polls. Also, CNN leans to the Democrat side on things, so much for no media bias.
I don't believe these polls, we can only wait until November 4 to see what the outcome will be.

McCain is a joke   October 21st, 2008 12:33 pm ET

As most people are saying, we're in the "worst economic downturn since the Depression." And this was caused by the Republican economic policies during the last eight years. When Bush took office, Clinton had left a $200 billion surplus. The Republicans have turned it into a $10 trillion debt. There's NO WAY anyone in their right mind would vote for these people again.

Plus, the Anti-American Republicans are crying about the 'redistribution of wealth.' Well, folks, they already redistributed it to the corporations, their buddies on Wall Street and the rich folks at the top. What we're hoping for in Obama is a redistribution back to the way it was when Clinton gave us the budget surplus. It's not a new redistribution; it's fixing the redistribution that the Republicans already hoodwinked everybody with.

If what Senator Obama is proposing is socialism (and, I do not believe it is), I would STILL rather have socialism that McCarthyism, which is clearly what you are not only proposing but executing at this very time in the campaign. Heavy implications, innuendo, and not enough fact to support claims is exactly what "Joe the blackballer" did way back when.

Way to bring McCarthyism back to the forefront. Uh-oh, Senator McCain – I shook Michelle Obama's hand at a rally this year….Am I a socialist, too??

Charles of Georgia   October 21st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

GOP needs to move into 21st century. Socialism argument is a topic of 20th century. All capitalism conutries have adopted some socialism programs in 20th century. Social Security, Medicare/aid, unemployee insurance, union, etc.. are all products of socialism. Even cummunism (like China) has adopted some capitalism now. So there is no pure capitalism or socialism now, they are all evolved. Remember we have 10+ trillions debt and most of them are contributed by GOP presidents. Especially the current one – he contributes half of these debt. GOP must abandon the supply-side economics theory. It does not work!! Bussiness is for profit. They hire more people because they want to make more money, not because they have more money.

It may be difficult to understand if 40% are getting a tax break or rebate, however it is clear they are getting $500, whether it is 6 or 1/2 a dozen?
Why would he be telling 40% of his small audiences that Obama is giving them $500? Obama has enough money to do his own advertising! sheesh

If McCain really loves America, he would drop out, admit defeat, and let Obama fix the country. McCain does not love America.

As soon as the media starts talking more about the Palins ( Sarah and Todd ) roles in the AIP, ( Alaska Independent Party ) they will indeed open there eyes to the corrupt side of the GOP ticket,,its my opinion that the media isnt talking about this, i mean come on people, these 2 wanted Alaska seperate from the US, and theyre motto is Country First? since Palin says Fair Game about the Obama roles with Acorn or Ayers, i say ok, Sarah, then its Fair Game about you and the AIP, and she still refuses to answer questions about this, PLEASE POST THIS CNN,,, America deserves the truth about the Palins, go see the video on Youtube of her endorsing the AIP just this year, then make up your own minds, im going with the winning team, Obama // Biden 08

"Russians reject McCain cash plea".

Nice.

In case you don't know, it's unlawful to accept campaign contributions from foreign nationals, John. Evidently you've forgotten that since the last time you falsely accused Obama of doing the same.

McCain is living in a fantasy world. What McCain doesn't know would be bad enough, but the things he does know that are dead wrong could really destroy the economy.

McCain claims all corruption takes place in Washington, but in the real world, corruption is everywhere. People cheat. If we make cheating easier than working for a living, people cheat a lot. Who signs their paychecks has nothing to do with their behavior. These facts are obvious.

McCain is unacquainted with obvious truths about the economy. Nothing he does gives us any evidence that he has a contribution to offer.

Meanwhile, Obama is holding panel discussions with respected leaders to generate ideas to help fix the economy.

It's your future, take your pick.

TAINOPOWER   October 21st, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Well, who else can we blame? The Republicans did have the majority in the house and senate for six years. When Bush was appointed president there was a surplus. It does'nt take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Dawn   October 21st, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Mmm…John McCain…You and your running off at the mouth running mate has been going to your rallies and started to attack Obama on what Bill Ayers? It is beating a dead horse, you are ignoring the fact that there is a problem that will not go away overnight! It may not go away in four years! Calling names, dirty politics, makes dirty politicians. To me it is very kindergartenish.
Sarah Palin is NOT ready to be a Polar Bear catcher! Watch and see. If they are elected to the highest Office of the nation, her eyes are on the White House and if something will happen to McCain? This is scary enough!!!!!!!
This is up to the VOTERS and Go and VOTE Please.

Go Obama/Biden08/12

Carole   October 21st, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Why would McCain be getting low marks for what is going on in the economy. He is not at fault for what is going on. Its so lame to keep saying that he is going to lose because of the economy.

It should be said that: OBAMA IS GOING TO WIN BECAUSE HE IS AFRICAN AMERICAN – NOT TO MENTION ACORN WITH ITS VOTER FRAUD AND GOD KNOWS WHO ELSE IS FRAUDULANT.

Obama will not fix the problems we face – he will make it worse. You stupid people will get what you deserve if he gets in – unfortunately we will all suffer because of you.

McCain is a leader – does not need to be tested – and he can fix the economy regardless of what bull you are trying to sell.

McCain not only wants to continue Bush's policies but he wants to expand them…. Brilliant!

Dee   October 21st, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Listening to Obama and his economic panel on CNN live now, one can easily understand why Obama is leading. Rather then focusing on personal attacks and petty matters as McCain has been doing, Obama is spending the time discussing the issues facing Americans and how they can be resolved…

GA4OBAMA   October 21st, 2008 12:28 pm ET

it's always been about the economy. i'm glad obama stayed on message with this unlike mccain. mccain took his eyes off the issue in order to win. it's country first remember. this country needs to rebuild it's economy.

Additionally go to any University bookstore pick up any text book on Income Taxation and find the nature of the beast is the redistribution of wealth. Nope not socialism Sara, read a little bit more, speak a little bit less

Sam Benegal   October 21st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

McCain-Palin sang "Joe the Plumber" for past 6 days since the last Debate, Now "Tito the Builder" will be in their campaign theme for next couple of days….

Good for "Tito the Builder". Like "Joe the Plumber", he will be in Fox and other right wing Media Outlets….

Bad for McCain-Palin because that’s what they can come up most, nothing constructive. McCain-Palin was ahead in Mid September. They botched their own chance by being erratic, failed to address the issues that most American cares most (JOBS, ECONOMY)…

HOW IN A WORLD AMERICA CAN COMPETE AND MAINTAIN ITS SUPREMECY IF AVERAGE AMERICAN HAS TO DEAL WITH BREAD AND BUTTER ISSUE EVERY DAY????

HOW IN A WORLD AMERICA CAN COMPETE WITH COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, CHINA AND OTHER DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AREA IF WE ARE NOT INVESTING ON SCHOOLS FOR YOUNGER GENERATIONS???..

Like "Joe the Plumber" issue, this "Tito the Builder" or "Obama the Spender” will not stick to American Voters. As time ticking, many voters do not care what is coming out of McCain-Palin ticket. They simply think these duos lost all Credibility’s…

APinPA   October 21st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

McCain should have spent the last 10 years studying economics and especially the last 2 on domestic economics (all that time he has spent running for President in one fashion or another) rather than on trashing his opponents. Or at least he should have chosen a running mate with some economic savvy, This all speaks to which of the candidates understands what the issues really are and which of the candidates has the judgment to make sound decisions. He can't even run a strong campaign so how is he going to run the country and lead us out of this mess created by republicans????

James   October 21st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

McCain/Palin are just plain bad for America , you see it at all there events, they bring out the radical loonies in America.

Cindy Nelson   October 21st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

This article just says it all. It's the economy stupid.
All I hear from McCain is attacks on Obama's character which I don't buy for a minute. I hear about Joe the Plumber, I hear about lynch mob crowds, I hear "Thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere"…
The whole time I'm worried about the economy. Now the Republicans are in trouble it seems– and they have McCain & Palin to thank for it. You dont try and pit American against American by saying things like, "Pro American parts of the country"…Or the "Real America"….
This is what is killing it for you Republicans. What a dumb, no wait, Stupid way to campaign.
McCain should go out with grace and just focus on the issues and no more personal attacks on me (Since I think I am pro American) and Senator Obama.

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   October 21st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

When are you people in the media going to start giving fair, unbiased and fully truthful reporting? "Your man" will bankrupt this country. Wait and see. You don't take from the hard working people to give to those who want to take handouts and sit on their duffs and 'collect'. That is robbery! We are destroying initiative, creativity and productivity by stealing from the so-called rich and giving to the poor. Stop having children that you can not afford! Stop buying homes that you can't afford! AND stop expecting the government to bail you out or give you a handout if you can't live within your means. My mother was a widow at 38 with five children and I don't want to hear someone else's boo-hoo stories. I made it but I had to work my butt off to get where i am at ! Give me a break!!!!!

ShirleyY - Seattle   October 21st, 2008 12:26 pm ET

I am one of those 3/4 of the people that think Obama can better handle the economy…his consistency, organization and economic plan has shown me that he can get the job done…maybe not in 4 years but I'm sure we'll have seen significant progress by the end of his first 4 year term. Bring him back for a second term and that'll be even better.

Democrats for the White House, Sentate and House!

John McCain is so scared of the ECONOMY because he has no plan that will work. I'm surprised he hasn't quit his campaign as yet because it's running on thin ice thanks to Obama's SMART JUDGEMENT by taking PUBLIC FUNDING and OUTFOXING the military veteran. What a SHAME! Now John McCain looks like a POW on a lonely island. Colin Powell gets it and I hope many more REPUBLICANS can see That Barack OBama and the DEMOCRATS has a bright future in American HISTORY.

Rebekah A.   October 21st, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Joe, please READ the facts before you type inaccuracies on this website…the tax will be 3% for those making over $250,000. That is nothing near being "taxed to death."

Leslie   October 21st, 2008 12:25 pm ET

STOP WHINING GOP'ers. Are you mad because you are finally going to have to pay your true fair share of taxes. For years, you've been allowed to maintain your wealthy because of "newly" legal loopholes.

It's about time you share in the burden of keeping this country going. We the people who work just as hard, but didn't get the nepotisim breaks you did want OUR fair share.

Joe   October 21st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

This article is biased. What is being ignored is that the Democrats controlled Cogress for the last four years. So are they blameless? Not the logic they used to throw out the Republican majority in 2004! CNN needs to come clean and admit who they favor in this race. Then we can filter this so called news and more on to important information. And no, I am not that Joe.

undecided   October 21st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

What I find interesting is that more and more of Obama's top advisors made a killing while working at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Lehmann Brothers. The latest one received a 150 million dollar 'golden parachute' to leave.

And I'll bet not a single one of these democRATs gets prosecuted, because the democRATs will be in charge. You can't even bring up their names because they are black and you will be labeled a racists.

I don't care about the color of their skin, these RATS, Obama's advisors need to be in prison.

Thierry   October 21st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

John McCain is about to lose both the Presidential Election and his reputation he held for years in the Senate. Sarah Palin in the other hand has only one choice, support her husband ambition by investing more energy in AIP. Otherwise, she's screwed.

A Veteran.

Too bad all those people who think we are in recession and on the way to depression don't know much about history. Tax and spend politicians during tough economic times create even worse economic situations.

Worst case scenario for difficult economic times is an extreme left presidency with a large left majority in the House and Senate that can ignore any dissent. But….if that is what the voters want….I guess we will all have to tighten our belts.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 21st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

The economy will remain at the top of Americans concerns and not the on the road gossip show that McCain and Palin have been hosting. They are tone deaf to what Americans are saying and don't seem to know how to read the stock market as it drops to all time lows or are they just checking on how much it has only affected them. McCain and Palin seem more angry at the American people for being concerned about their economic crisis. With that said, McCain and Palin send no message of change, just shut up and don't complain and that's George W. Bush all over and we will never forget.

Jason Hussein, Nashville, Tn.   October 21st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Taxes are always a redistribution of wealth. The only difference is the wealth has been distributed to the wealthy for years now. Corporate socialism, and forget the rest of us. It's a shame there are still people in this country who can't see the truth about their situation. But there will be enough of us on Nov. 4 that will turn the tide. These red boogeymen don't scare us.

Barack Obama talks about sacrifice well I sacrificed alot during the
2000 election. I am jewish and I did not vote for Gore/Lieberman even though Lieberman is jewish. I did not take the easy ego satisfying
choice by voting for a candidate because he is of the same religion.
I felt that George Bush was the best candidate. Blacks should not be
so ego-centric just to support a candidate along racial lines. McCain has more experience and I believe there easily could be another 911.
Bush was the right man for the job. Being ego-centric is not a good personality trait. Not one that God rewards.

Trickle down does not work! The greedy SOB's at the top get fat on it & leave little scraps for the rest! Guess what Joe the so-called plumber: Many of those poorer people getting a tax cut will now have the money to call you and fix their plumbing! Wait, never mind.. They'd call a REAL plumber! LOL! But the fact is still there, that 'welfare to the rich' is the Republican way & never makes its way down where at least welfare to the poor gets spent at the businesses owned by the rich. Think about that JOE KILOZ!
McCain's plans are same old failed Bush policies: Say NO to 'welfare to the rich'!

Listening now to Obama's economy meeting and Q&A in FLA. The fact that he is willing to forgo all the "rah rah" of a rally (and he WOULD draw the crowds, this we know!) to deal substantively with the MOST important issue in this country right now as opposed to McPalin who is left to NOTHING now but worthless futile attacks, just speaks to what a fantastic PRESIDENT Obama will be. I cast my vote for the right one already and just can't wait until two weeks from today when we know for sure that this country will be headed for the CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!!

Obama has laid out plans, and is a figure that can inspire hope.
We need to get red of red/blue, we are all Americans are are in this together.
With 40% seeing a depression in the next year,…we need a leaderwho offers hope, and who cna motiviate us. Attitude can go a long way to making a difference.

At Least Keep Your Dignity Man !!   October 21st, 2008 12:20 pm ET

John McCain is so far behind that he needs to wind down his campaign.

He should stop the divisive rhetoric and begin to unite the country. John, don't leave Barack Obama a hateful, divided public.

McCain's base supporters will be part of the population also and everyone deserve a seat in the boat. That will be achievable if, in these last 2 weeks, we have a principled, civil discussion rather than more lies and "half-truths".

John McCain, campaign in a manner consistent with how you want your great grand children to read about you in a history book

Jude   October 21st, 2008 12:20 pm ET

JOE KILOZ,

Yes, the choice is clear….if you making over 250K, you probably have no worries because you will do fine no matter what happens in this economy. If you less than 250K you better make sure you vote Obama otherwise you get no tax break because McCain gives all the tax breaks to the rich fat cats only.

The choice is really clear…I bet there are more people who make less than 250K then those who make more than 250K. Which means, if people view the election based upon their financial wealth, Obama is going to take the election

Frank,MO   October 21st, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Hey Joe Kiloz … how about addind some brain to your typing 'skills'.
If you earn more than $250k (TAXABLE) income, you'll pay 39% on that additional amount instead of 36%. So, let me help you – that's a 3% difference. You call that "taxed to death" ? Get a life.

Jeff from Jersey   October 21st, 2008 12:19 pm ET

When the only issue that you can win on is war we're in deeper touble than we know if McCain were elected.Look what Bush has done in 8 years. The only thing he ever paid any attention to was war while the rest of the country and it's people went right down the tubes.

If you think the economy is bad now, there won't even be an economy with McCain! He talks about reducing taxes while he wants to tax healthcare benefits. He talks about reducing taxes and buying up mortgages which can only be pais dor by taxes. He wants to stay at war "for as long as it takes to win something you can't "win" but it's going to take hundreds of billions more in taxes to pay for iy and that's only if he doesn't start another one!

What kind of economy will that lead to?Full-fledged depresion!

Dan   October 21st, 2008 12:19 pm ET
