Sen. McCain's new tv ad focuses on taxes and Sen. Obama's conservation with Joe Wurzelbacher.

(CNN) – Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign trail encounter with Ohio plumber Joe Wurzelbacher continues to play a prominent role in Sen. John McCain’s economic message during the final weeks of the race for the White House.

McCain’s new television ad, “Sweat Equity,” begins with footage of Obama’s exchange with Wurzelbacher, now known simply as “Joe the plumber,” followed by images of would-be voters declaring “I’m Joe the plumber.”

“I'm supposed to work harder... Just to pay more taxes. Obama wants my sweat to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?,” the ad’s script also says.

The McCain campaign says the 30-second spot will air in “key states.” The ad follows up on a Web video launched last week that also features the Wurzelbacher exchange with Obama .

(full script of “Sweat Equity” after the jump)

Script For "Sweat Equity" (TV :30)

BARACK OBAMA: I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody.

WOMAN: I'm Joe the plumber.

WOMAN: I'm Joe the plumber.

WOMAN: I'm Joe the plumber.

ANNCR: Spread the wealth?

MAN: I'm supposed to work harder...

MAN: Just to pay more taxes.

MAN: Obama wants my sweat to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?

WOMAN: I'm Joe the plumber.

ANNCR: Barack Obama. Higher Taxes. More Spending. Not Ready.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

John McCain's in the midst of his campaign's deaththrows. May his campaign rest in peace on November 4th. Though I doubt he'll be that grateful.

Go out and vote!

We don't need to be ruled by these Good ol' Boy, public fund-stealing, accountability-dodging, lipstick-wearing pigs any longer.

Go out and vote!!!

God Bless America!

SONGBIRD MCCAIN   October 22nd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

The McCain campaign and ad strategy is as erratic as he is!!

This doesn't even make sense.

I think McCain has Alzheimers. Check out the YouTube video (shown on Daily Show) of McCain in 2000 saying why his proposal to have increased taxes on the rich and lower taxes on the poor was not socialism.

That old confused man doesn't know what way is up. Pathetic.

Michelle, PA   October 22nd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I have to laugh every time I see one of these commercials!

McCain/Palin has no coherent plan of their own on just about any issue, so they have nothing to say other than tell us the other guy is lying and has a completely different plan he will unveil after November 4th.

This made-up second plan will, of course, not only raise everybody's taxes to unbearable levels but also turns the country into the USSA and, by the way, is apparently opposed by none other than God Himself.

It's pure comedic genius, "My Friends". You betcha.

One more reason I'm thankful for my DVR!

Craig in Washington   October 22nd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Give it up, McCain. Your plumber scam didn't work then and it's not working now. And your constant telling of lies isn't helping either. Instead of criticizing Obama, why don't to try something REALLY maverick? Tell us what YOUR plan is. Now that would be radical!

FAYE, NV   October 22nd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

250,000 Joe or myself making that kind of money. John what is wrong with helping americans. If someone makes over 250,000 a year they will be taxed, simple. Why is this hard. Read the B-tiudes – it's in the bible.

JL   October 22nd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

For those of you who are making remarks, socialism and communism are two different things. Look it up before repeating meaningless fear-mongering rhetoric. It is possible to have a socialist element of a capitalist society without the entire country going down the toilet.

Furthermore, Obama is neither.

McCain's policies are the same policies the republicans have proposed since the Reagan years, to include the ones used by the Bush administration.

...and you would know both of these things if you bothered to read rather than just believing and then repeating everything you hear.

B   October 22nd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Just like the rest of McCain's campaign, "Joe" (actual name Sam) the plumber is a lie. He makes 45K/yr and would actually benefit from Obama's tax plan. This so called independent also donated to McCain's campaign. Of course, Joe, like many others, may still vote GOP because he's been brainwashed by multimillionaires like Rush Limbaugh that he'll one day make $250k/yr or more too, despite the fact that his chance of that is less than 5%. I am amazed at the ignorance (or racism?) of so many GOP voters who keep voting against their own interests. Even McCain (in 2000) said that Bush's tax cuts for the rich were "irresponsible" and voted AGAINST the very tax cuts he now proposes and that Obama is trying to reverse. What changed?

Wake-up America   October 22nd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

It just amazes me how blind and ignorant a lot of people are regarding our Economy and Taxes. Can McCain/Palin get just one fact straight? The answer is NO!! The sad thing is I can’t understand how many people believe their LIES.

The Bush administration will go down in history as the HIGHEST SPENDERS per capita in the history of the Unite States, FACT presented last Thursday.

This notion that Senator Obama’s Tax Plan is going to give money to the poor a TOTAL LIE. If you don’t pay into Federal Income taxes you don’t get anything back. Besides it’s not even getting anything back its how much taxes you will pay on your TAXIBLE INCOME. For all of you who don’t understand the Tax Laws, that’s after deductions not Gross Income. Therefore, this whole B.S. Palin is spouting is nothing more rederick and LIES AGAIN.

Obama’s plan would reduce the tax on 95% of TAX PAYING AMERICANS by some $1,000 to $3,000 more than McCain’s Plan, FACT. It would increase the tax on persons with taxable income of $250,000 to $1 million by only $500 to $2,000 more than McCain’s plan. And for those with taxable income more than $1 million, well they would be taxed $500,000+ more than McCain’s plan. Wow, since the McCain have 7 houses and 13 cars and taxable earnings more than $4 million, no wonder they are bashing Obama’s Plan. And Obama’s plan is not raising taxes at all it is simply let the failed Bush tax cut expire in 2009 to bring them back to Pre-Bush tax rates. By the way that is when America was prospering, or have most of you forgotten. The trickle down ecomonics of the Bush Administration just HAS NOT WORKED.

The real facts are folks Senator Obama’s Plan will have less of a tax burden on most Americans than McCain’s

PLAIN AND SIMPLE

therealist   October 22nd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Obama made and broke, the exact same tax cut promise when he was elected to the state senate. Not that liberals really care about being misled or anything..

Linda   October 22nd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

The ad is factual when it comes to hard working middle-income workers. And it is also true that history does show that raising taxes on anyone during any economic downturn as bad as our is now would be devastating for our future. Let's not let history repeat itself by letting Obama raise anyone's taxes!!

T   October 22nd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I am so sick of people worrying about someone raising taxes on rich people. I dont know if any of these people watch television...All these shows with people throwing lavish weddings that cost millions of dollars, throwing birthday parties for 16 year olds that cost more than some people's homes and buying them "practice" cars that cost $50,000 or more!!! Some people in this country can't even afford to buy their kids a gift or a birthday cake.

KLEE   October 22nd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

If all the "Joe the Plumbers" don't get it by now.......I worked for 40 years and top earnings got to be around $50,000 .... I don't have that great of an education because I had to work to support myself and my son – used the welfare only once to get food stamps – to stretch my then .75 cents an hour waitress earnings.....I get it!

Charlie Bradley   October 22nd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

McCain (not so surprisingly) obviously knows very little about Marketing "Joe the plumber" both the phrase and the person, are so over!!!

Joe Internet Readers, Jo TV watchers, Joe Debate watchers like myself see him for the blithering idiot that he is and that goes for his running mate too.

McCain, Go home, and take the Wicked Witch of Wasilla with you !!!! :)

kj   October 22nd, 2008 2:57 pm ET

I wish the Republican party would communicate in terms other than worn out cliches and sound bites. "Joe the Plumber" "Joe Sixpack" "Wall Street vs Main Street". LISTEN...NONE of these catch phrases or generalizations mean ANYTHING to me. What matters to me are ISSUES and SOLUTIONS. Please stop insulting us with this approach. And for those who are crying foul on the media researching "Joe the Plumber" and publishing his back taxes and lack of a license, I say that the country would have NEVER HEARD OF HIM if it wasn't for McCain bringing him up, during the debate, like he was some icon of All-American integrity. The McCain campaign has made a commodity out of him, not Obama. Senator McCain, "Joe the Plumber" will not be able to fix the problems with your campaign. You should have fired the unscrupulous, nasty "swift-boat" strategists who have taken over your campaign. You are a much better man than your party hacks are making you seem with all these awful ideas like robocalls and labeling people "un-American". John McCain should represent himself and fire your campaign staff who are responsible for this garbage.

Vic of New York   October 22nd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

John McCain talks about "Joe the Plumber" as a distraction – another of the famous Republican Party red herrings heralding back to Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority".

The truth is the John McCain is really for Mario Gabelli who made $50,000,000 in 2006 and paid $0.00 in taxes – and others of his ilk.

Hey John, how do you think Mario will make use of another tax break for the rich?

Rhonda from SC   October 22nd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I am Rhonda the self employed real estate agent who makes less than $250,000 a year and boy do I need a tax break!

Joe the Plumber revealed on Fox News that his family ( I believe his mother) once were welfare recipients. So, it was ok when Joe grew up on the tax payer's dollars but now that he is older and obviously making less than $250,00 he wants to "pretend" to be about principle. Funny and sad...

Does Joe know how many people are on medicare; probably to include his mother? It is a government program of health insurance.

Joe is being USED by the McCain camp and is too stupid to admit it since he has dug himself so deep into bullcrap!

Joe the plumber, please stop being ignorant for McCain's benefit. When this election is over and if McCain wins, which I highly doubt, you will just be another poor American who helped him by being naive!

Some people will never want to see a black person do good at anything no matter how hard they have worked at it. I see this a lot among black people they do not patronize black business, they openly tell other black people that they will fail so that person who has a dream may not try to fulfill their dreams. Now we have this article that says that a black person is far too ambitious, because he or she strives for more then just getting by! The U.S. Constitution guarantees your right to live a life of willful ignorance. Fortunately, it also provides for your right to free speech. That's what makes the un-informed among us so easy to identify. The Republican Party has been very good, for a very long time, at exploiting the ignorant among the electorate for political gain.

“Muslim!” “Terrorist!” “Socialist!” Each claim is every bit as accurate and truthful as it would be to say that Senator Obama is a porcupine.

Don't avoid or shun the truth. Don't be a tool. Don't be a fool. And, whatever you do, don't get all of your news from so-called "Advocacy Journalists". They make for halfway decent entertainment from time to time; but they don't (by definition) present complete, accurate, and un-biased stories.

My HOPE for this year is that the Democrats finally have a nominee who can unite Americans faster than Republicans can divide them. If that’s not a big part of the CHANGE WE NEED, I don’t know what is.

Ron   October 22nd, 2008 2:24 pm ET

What a nerve to just lie like that after all the fact checks have proved McBush accusations are blatantly false. Samuel (Joe) the plumber is a tax dodger who lied as a political gimmick. Wait to go CNN. In your first ever interview with Sarah Cheney Palin, you go all out and ask the tough questions Sean Hannity already asked. Good for you! It's about time someone made Sarah repeat her same talking points, unchallenged by a phony journalist such as Drew Griffin. Imagine the horror of an interview with Larry King? Can you imagine the kinds of things he'd ask her?? Like, with facts in hand, "why are you lying about the Troopergate conclusion, Obama's tax plan, your husbands sessecionist ties, and your experience to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency?"

Peter (CA)   October 22nd, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I guess everyone in the video makes more than $250K a year. So, why can't they pay their share? Should the poor be made to pay for new schools, fixing the bridges, port security, food inspections, etc. etc. etc.

The socialism thing is a red herring. It is nothing but Republican desperation. Socialism is the big Wall St. bailout, it is subsidies to billion dollar oil companies and factory farms. This is reality, not the spin the McCain campaign uses.

"Joe the Plumber" is not real. "Joe" is a figment of Joe's imagination. The real Joe admitted that he would be better off under Obama's plan. Why won't McCain mention that?? Will he mention Joe hasn't been paying his taxes?

Independent in NC   October 22nd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Oh, please. Both candidates have flat out lied in their ads. I've yet to see an ad that is not misleading, cherry-picked, or a complete fabrication from any candidate in any race.

Obama is not going to raise my taxes, but he is going to raise taxes on someone else, and that person is probably paying 2-3 times more than I am now anyway. I do not see that as fair, so it does not matter to me if I'm getting a break or not. Clearly, this thinking puts me in the minority.

One of my concerns is that people who support him never seem to disagree with him on anything. That worries me, especially after the last eight years. I want our President to be scrutinized on every last iota of position, policy, and character. It seems that people seem so swept up in the "I'm going to get money" and "we're going to end the war in Iraq" (yeah right, as soon as we pull our troops from Germany, Japan, Korea, Bosnia, etc) that Obama is not being questioned as thoroughly as he should be. Such as his position that women should be included in the draft, and his desire to move gun control to the state level (which would conflict with the 2nd amendment).

If elected, if Obama does not make good on his promises, are his supporters going to be as ferocious with him as they are with McCain? A Democrat-controlled Congress is certainly not going to stand up to him.

Lets be clear about something – just because a business has gross sales of 250k does not mean that it 's owner made 250k – in order for a business to have net earnings of 250k it would in a likely hood have to gross over 1 million. If I should be so lucky as to have a business that had net gross of 250k or more I would not be complaining about paying a little more than the other 95% of people in this country. This Joe the Plumber nonsense is just plain wrong – there is noway that a local plumber from anywhere USA is earning net of 250k – if there is let him pay more in taxes.

Joe the Plumber is McCain's only claim to fame.. McCain is lame and Gidget is as well. They both need to headed to Alaska faraway Island and remain their for eternity. I'm sick of McCain/Palin dirty tricks and I'm glad Obama is fighting back with his own robo call to reflect change.

Geesh! This man has taken every name calling McCain and Palin has said for weeks now, it's time to kick McCain and Carabou-Barbie back to were they belong. Hell, if someone keeps kicking you, you should diffently kick back and kick them as hard as you can, so they can't get back up.

Go Obama! I love it!

dwmulenex   October 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

after all, what's a barbie without some new clothes and some new hair? of course, the GOP is all about your sweat and their equity, cashed out at hedge fund carry over tax rates that are one half of what the real Joe pays. Believe the power of more tax cuts for McCain and friends–Cindy posted $4.2 million last year–instead of the power of tax cuts for 95 percent of earners at your peril. After yours is foreclosed, or you are bankrupt from medical expenses, maybe John will let drive one of his thirteen cars or live in one of his seven houses. Right.

What has happened to the media and people of this country when the only dissent allowed is that which is PC and promotes socialism and socialist causes? People in Hollywood are blacklisted, politicians and their supporters and ridiculed and lampooned based on their conservative views. I am not a mindless drone of the far right, but even though I support the social causes of the left, I’m considered a conservative because I find our government and all who feed on the labor of others to be repugnant and corrupt. I feel this will only get worse when we suffer through 2 years of one party rule should Barack Obush win the election

Tax money is what pays for bridges, roads, schools, port security, food inspection, etc. Bush thought it was a great idea for the rich to pay for less and let's take a look at where our country is today.
Obama is just setting things right. He is the only one who can clean up the mess.

For those who object to anyone saying anything about the McCain campaign paying $150,000 for Palin's clothing to fit the profile they made..... I remember all the objection and the fun made at the expense of John Edwards over a $400 haircut...
This is not a sexist complaint... it was done to the Edwards family, what people are objecting to is that she was put out as an everyday hockey mom... just like everyone else...
Well the last time I looked a decent house cost that much.

I see that another story here has the Annointed One (aka Oprah's boy toy) saying that the economy and national security are connected. Well great, more proof now of 2 things he'd screw up if the idiots take over the asylum and he wins. When his own running mate is saying America will be attacked, that doesn't give much confidence (or hope).

Barry, you're a failure of a community organizer, an ineffective senator, and if (God forbid) you get in as President, on par with Jimmy Carter as worst president ever. Why don't you do everyone a favor and you an Joe-Joe go back to girding each other's loins or whatever you two do for fun.

Question: If the attack on America would come as a result of Barry's friend Bill Ayers giving the attackers the security codes, is it still considered an attack?

McCain/ Palin are the ones who are all about taxing your health care benefits. They also favor tax breaks for the big oil companies, large corporations, and rich, wealthy millionaires.
Joe the Plumber is a McCain plant, probably paid by the RNC (like Palin's and the 'first dudes' attire). He is not a real plumber and does not earn anywhere near $250K. Rumor also has it he hasn't been paying his income taxes.

i am one of those small town, white, vet 1963-65, Christian, republicans who think we should observe history and note: Germany was the most religious country in the world prior to WWII. they had a bad economy, were the highest educated in the world, and look what this religious group of fantics did. I AM ASHAMED OF DODSON AND OTHER RIGHT WING FANATICS WHO SAY WE VOTE AND DO EXACTLY WHAT THIS RELIGIOUS GROUP WANTS OR WE ARE NOT GOING TO HEAVEN. this is why our leaders like Adams who believed in god, wanted it separate and those churchs preaching this should have to right to preach what they want–but economics–no tax deductions. this would stop the hate i see from "love thy neighbor" people. Wonder why Billy Graham does not belong to this group and sticks to winning people to the Lord.

Is the RNC trying to say that the 95% of Americans who make under $250K are not working hard enough? Oh, I get it. The large majority of Americans are just plain lazy. If only we would work harder (like as hard as Cindy McCain has worked to "earn" her million dollar annual salary), then we would all be earning over $250K per year.

Most people earning more than $250,000 make a significant part of their income from investments / dividends. Obama wants to let those who actually *work* for their income keep more of their hard earned money, yet he is a "socialist" and "spreading the wealth". Investment dividends "spread the wealth" by giving money to investors based on the hard work of the poor schmuck that is getting taxed to death under Bush. But I guess "Joe the Plumber" can't see past the fat paycheck he is getting from the republicans...

What a surprise! The ex- Beauty Queen UNQUALIFIED REPUBLICAN white female Affirmative Action VP Pick is spending more on make up and wardrobe PER MONTH than she earned PER YEAR as Alaska's Gov. while she sat on her duff "calling her job in from home". This is the REASON this country is FALLING APART because of the BUSH/MCCAIN/PALIN REPUBLICAN PARTY OF SELF SERVING SELFISH and RACIST mindset.

hmm....lets see the count here...travel on AK taxpayers dime for family to fly $21K, trip to NYC for Sarah & Bristol (who is supposed to have mono at this time) $9K for airfare and hotel @ $720/ night (uff da!), trip to Philly w/ 2 kids $2,741.26, $13,200 for make up, $150 K in clothes....hmm..is there a pattern here???

Her makeup is hideous. She is hideous. Her blush is way too heavy and very dated looking. It's 80's and stripy and too brown. McCain and Palin crack me up. They get these reality show makeup artists to do their makeup. The sickest reality show we have now is the McCain/Palin campaign. Filled with major lies, moosehunting, shopping sprees, rumors, snowmobiling, unwed teens, abuse of power etc.

I have a big issue with CNN – I turn on the "news" and I get Sarah Palin AGAIN. I go on their website and I see Palin, and McCain AGAIN with Obama/Biden in small print. Joe the Plumber's real name is SAM, he isn't a plumber, he will never make a half a million dollars in his lifetime (unless CNN gives him a job or continues with the celebrity status), the guy lies through his teeth and he doesn' t pay his taxes. McCain -The man is a shell of his former honorable self and his running mate is just downright dumb, she'll lie and say anything to get into the White House, and she rips of her own state of Alaska for personal gain. For people that vote for them, the rest of the world will laugh, the jobs will continue to go overseas, we will get taxed, the budget will continue to sky rocket, and I can AGAIN say – I told you so. All sensible Republicans will vote Obama while the Joe Six Packs and Joe the Plumbers will continue to watch reality tv and the football games and wonder why they can't get any help from the government when they lose their jobs. Heavens to betsy, use your brains people. This isn't a one time contest – this is four years of your economy.

What's hilarious is everybody is 'Joe The Plumber' if they aren't actually plumbers! Heck, the guy wasn't certified or even a part of the local plumber's union in his area. He doesn't own a business, but fantasizes about owning one. No plumber business makes over $250,000 dollars on average so no matter what Joe the fake plumber says, he would benefit from a Democratic tax plan in the White House because he makes less than that right now and would certainly make less should he get his would-be plumbing business off the ground.

Obama's comments today reflect maturity and clarity on these and other issues, and he states accurately that McCain is just 'making up stuff' because they have nothing else.

Thoughtful voters will see through the McCain reactive jive n' hype, I do and I'm disgusted. The McCains as a couple appear to feel they are entitled to the White House, the Palins exhibit similar behavior. Just disgusting.

The McCain's cannot talk about 'sweat equity', they have been handed all of their wealth, how can you hae sweat equity in 7 houses? The Obamas on the other hand came from modest backgrounds, like most of us, they have true credibility.

I have seen two examples today of McCain responding to various issues by telling members of the media "all I can do is laugh..." - as if its not enough to expect the electorate to select a woman who wants to start running the senate to her ideology, now we have a pres candidate who responds to issues by saying all he can do is laugh at it.

I used to be able to see retirement from my front porch - now I can't even see Russia!

Joe-sixpack in St. Paul   October 22nd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I saw this commercial this morning on tv here in Minnesota...it is truly laughable!

Bulldog   October 22nd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

McCain wants to continue the economic policy of the last 8 years that "spread the wealth" to the rich. Obama want's to take some of the money that the rich received for the last 8 years and return it to where it belongs. Obama's "spread the wealth" is just spreading it back to where it was before Bush took over. The income gap between rich and poor people has widened more in the last 8 years than any time in history. Obama wants to end that and that's a good thing. McCain wants to widen that income gap even more.

Bama4Obama   October 22nd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Do you hear that sound? It's the sound of more voters abandoning the McCain campaign! Off they go...WHEEEE!

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 22nd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I'm Barbara the Paralegal. Apparently Joe the Plumber isn't sweating the IRS, to whom he owes back taxes. Obama's tax plan is a tax plan. Facts are facts: taxes have always been collected on our incomes and put toward government programs and mechanisms. Recognize unemployment insurance anyone? Social Security? Medicaire and Medicaid? This is not news, people. Further, the government has had its hands in plenty of "independent businesses" in this "capitalist" society throughout history: railroads, telephones, retirement plans and of course, the BILLIONS of dollars the current REPUBLICAN president is pouring into US Banks as well as buying STOCK in said banks. McCain's ad does not mention the bailout, OR the BILLIONS of dollars he will give in tax breaks to those companies who aren't sweating very much.
OBAMA/BIDEN '08 & '12 YES WE CAN!!

Preco, NY   October 22nd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Like all McCain campaign ideas, this one also came out of the PLUMBER'S Crack!!!!!

tulsa   October 22nd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Sean, I'm with you, this should be illegal. Lies, outright, bold faced lies.

tulsa   October 22nd, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Hey McCain,
Nobody but your base thinks Joe the plumber is a economic genius.
Remember what Christ commanded;
Let your abundance supply their want. (2 Cor. 8:14)

Red, Red WHINE!!   October 22nd, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I can't wait for FactCheck to look at this one. Just look at some of the blatant lies:

Trillion Dollars

Joe The Plumber exists? (no license, doesn't pay taxes)

Taxation, in ANY form is spreading the wealth. When McCain stops buying bad mortgages, voting for bail outs and suggesting stimulus packages...then the two faced demon will be able to say he's not socialist. But for now, he's more socialist then Europe!

I'll take the socialist that wants to help 95% of america rather then just 5%!

Michigan Voter   October 22nd, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Did the real Joe OK the use of his image and name in this new ad?

Sean   October 22nd, 2008 1:46 pm ET

How is this not illegal? He WILL NOT RAISE YOUR TAXES! They get away with so much. It's one thing to mis-state the facts. It's completely a different issue to flat-out lie...
