Sen. Barack Obama is trying to take the lead in Indiana, a traditionally Republican state.
Sen. Barack Obama is trying to take the lead in Indiana, a traditionally Republican state.

(CNN) – Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday charged that Sen. John McCain "wants to keep on putting corporations ahead of workers."

"Just yesterday, Sen. McCain strongly defended the Bush policy of lavishing tax cuts on corporations, including those that ship American jobs overseas.

"He made the strange argument that the best way to stop companies from shipping jobs overseas is to give more tax cuts to companies that are shipping jobs overseas," Obama said at a rally in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Obama was referring to comments McCain made Wednesday in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

McCain said that big corporations often move work overseas if they can because the tax rate is much lower.

"If they go to Ireland, they're only paying 11 percent. So where are they going to go where they can create wealth and create jobs? It's simple fundamental economics," McCain said as he defended his plan to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent.

Obama on Thursday said, "My opponent may call that 'fundamental economics,' but we know that's just another name for the Wall Street first, Main Street last."

I am Canadian and I agree we are highly taxed and when I heard that Cindy McCain only got taxed at a rate of 27% , you see the stark difference.

We have health care, our children our vaccinated our drug prices are regulated that is why I only pay $5.00 for an inhaler while my dear friend in Texas pays $90.00. As Sen Obama would say that is not right.

Second - Sen. Obama spent more time than Joe the Plumber deserved, but it was because he wanted to make clear his plan for tax cuts. It was far, far more than the guy deserved.

McCain stated he's been tested how can you be test as President without being president?

It's like being a fighter pilot just because you flew sorties, doesn't mean you can fly the space shuttle, it may be a little familiar but it will still require some OJT just a fact!!!

John McCain is very confused nowadays. Obama is right that those companies sending jobs overseas should not be given tax breaks. These tax breaks amount to two things. First, condoning giving American jobs away and second rewarding those that do so by giving them more money to send to manufacturers overseas. How exactly does Mc Cain's strategy help the ailing American economy?

AR Truth   October 23rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

If the corporations were actually creating jobs and using the tax money to expand, I could understand the tax cuts. However, this is obviously not what they're doing. They are keeping the profits in their pockets and paying people overseas less money for more work and no benefits. We have to have some incentives for them to stay here. Besides it is the average American that does all the spending, but what can we spend if we have no money and no jobs. It's really crazy when you think of it. Conservatives worry so much about social programs, thinking everything is a handout. Well the a few million in food stamps is nothing compared to this $700billion in the bail out plan.

paul (reformed republican)   October 23rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

"THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS CURRENTLY EMPLOYING SEVERAL TACTICS TO SUPPRESS DEMOCRATIC VOTERS IN BATTLEGROUND STATES. THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN BE POSITIVE THAT YOUR VOTE WILL NOT BE SUPPRESSED IS BY VOTING EARLY & IN PERSON AT THE POLLING STATIONS"

You think the democrats are any less innocent? Their mantra is vote early vote often even if you are dead, an illegal immigrant, or not reside in that state. There are democrat efforts to suppress voting as well.

D.   October 23rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

McCain has done a lot in many years. Obama is promises that we cannot evaluate...

Crank   October 23rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

My all means, voter early and throw your vote away. The campaigne isn't over by a long shot and Obama wants you to vote for him quickly so when the shinola hits the fan, he'll already have your vote.

Is this not the politics of fear?

Ron L   October 23rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I'll keep this short and sweet.....
HE"S RIGHT...Senator McCain believes in trickle down economcs where it BEGINS as a DOWN POUR on Wall Street and ENDS as a TRICKLE on main street.
What we have been experiencing for the last 8 years!!!
IT DOES NOT WORK!!!

Praetorian, Ft. Myers   October 23rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

A rebellion is at hand.
It's not violent–but it is volatile.
It's a rebellion from U.S. policies–that traditionally side on the behalf of organizations-who increase profits at the expense of displace U.S. employees and the addition of Chinese, Mexican, and Indian employees. It's a rebellion towards a government–that monitors wages and defines "bad news" as increases in wages to U.S. workers. It's a rebellion towards a government that rewards elimination of US jobs and minimal US investment–with enormous tax incentives.

It's a rebellion from the people, through elected officials, to: American business.

Pay us what we're worth–reduce the highest salaries–before you cut hourly wage jobs look at the ROI of white collar jobs–and if you export or outsource US jobs–you better have substantial documentation to support the move.

The message is clear John..perhaps you haven't heard.
Republicans–and anyone in the current Administration–is out of a job.

Adieu John–we like you, but you will not lead us in this next socio-economic endeavor to beat back Reaganomics–and 20 years of neglect.

We will now reclaim our own destiny–with a new "socialist" President who only desires to serve the will of the people. What a breath of fresh air!!!

Hemingway Forbes   October 23rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I AM CANADIAN = What is Obama talking about? Socialism or Leninism? It is so easy for white, black, brown, any color, to talk about anything being elitists, or ill informed theorists with too much education and too little street smarts. LOOKS AT CANADA The 30 odd years of Socialism has created one of the worlds most taxed people. Yet they love it. Let Government do everything for them, promise them everything and deliver nothing. That went on for decades. HealthCare is NOT the healthcare originally built for the Country. Today it is porkbarrelling, citizens waiting 18 and 24 months for basic procedures, building hospitals with no beds, nor staff to suffice. What are you people thinking about? Obama is perhaps honest in his vision but stupid in his execution. Also the thought of negotiating with Taliban? Oh boy. They love you Democrats. They see you as weak, stuffed Americans who now has a Black President who empowers the downtrodden. Taliban are NOT down trodden. They kill their women, their young girls, their own. Think America. You are headed down a slippery slope that will take Canada with you. So sad.

Yes very true McCain just wants you to think he's working for the little guy and the people who are making under $250K your crying because you will receive a tax break? STUPID!!! You would rather give the tax breaks to the big billion dollar companies and hope it trickle down, judging by what has happen in this past 8 years all I have to say is don't hold your breath.

I heard this morning that Ireland's economy is down the tubes. So much for an 11% corporate tax rate and "simple fundamental economics." Too bad John - Fate just seems to be conspiring against you, but I guess that's what happens when you are a self-involved egotist on the wrong side of History.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 23rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

McCain was "tested in Viet Nam" and he failed when he made propaganda films for them.

Thanks but no thanks.

Voted early for Obama

Cynthia; Bham   October 23rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

He does and will continue the Bush tax policies. A larger percentage of the American voters don't make over $250,000 and that should tell you something.

Nwadike K. Patrick   October 23rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Everything is being steered against McCain. In politics, the soft approach works with voters and thats the approach Obama choosed. Even McCain prefers that approach but having tied his hands, he vooices what his campaign contributors would like to hear. In other words, McCain buckled under his knee...

Bruce   October 23rd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

it is interesting that mccain keeps bringin up ireland and the 11% tax rate...My question is....what is the personal tax rate?....someone has to be making up the difference?

Fundamental economics is a subject on which McCain has no authority. He doesn't understand it. His plans will continue the slump we're in cause it will be a continuation of what's currently in place. I just don't understand who people support McCain. What are they thinking? Are they under the impression that his 100+ lobbyists have their interests at heart or are concerned with the plight of Americans???

Bob Indianapolis IN   October 23rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Look at all the lobbyists on McCain's campaign! Who do you think they support? Joe Six-Pack? NOt too freaking likely!

Cindy Nelson   October 23rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Nancy   October 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Enough of the lies and distortions of John Sidney McCain. People need to start speaking out against him and saying enough is enough! We are tired of your disgusting negativity and your lies to the American people during this campaign.

Tony   October 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

A guy whose campaign is funded 75% by corporations and celebrities is claiming that McCain is putting Main Street last. Now that's comedy!

Got any other lies for us, Obama? I'd love to hear your 50th different stance on your relationship with Bill Ayers. Did you think the we wouldn't find out that you wrote a blurb for his book?

Plain and simple, Obama is un-American. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to vote for this Socialist.

EVERYONE KNOWS MCCAIN HAS NO CONSCIENCE.

PEOPLE THINK TIMES ARE TOUGH NOW. JUST WAIT AND SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF MCCAIN AND HIS DIMITTED, INCOHERENT, INCOMPETENT, BABBLING EXCUSE FOR A RUNNING MATE, MOTHER, AND HUMAN BEING GET ELECTED.

jim, kansas city MO   October 23rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Well it is not a strange argument at all. I know a lot of people are choosing to ignore this wealth redistribution, because there is something in there for them.
Corporations that are shipping jobs overseas can not survive here because of high taxes. Unfortunately we can not learn that leson with other companies, how the heck are you going to increase taxes on companies in US when you see others leaving and shipping jobs overseas because of the high taxes.

Now as I said people are choosing to ignore this for some people important fact. It does not matter if 95% of population will see a tax cut if they do not have a job, heck they won't even need to pay taxes add all, they will go on unemployment or different government programs that Obama plans to establish.

McCain is not going to give you handout, that a fact. He will fight to keep your jobs here in US, by lowering the taxes.

Sue   October 23rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

That is an Obama lie. John McCain has devoted his entire life to defense of the US and the American way of life.

He speaks the truth. Too bad CNN spends more time giving legitimacy to McCains lies by constantly bringing them up unfavorably against Obama, while almost ingnoring Obamas TRUE accusations against McCain.

common sense   October 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

This is a bad argument.

think this through   October 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

The only reason that 95% + of people benifit from Obama's plan is because over 35% do not pay taxes and will get a free check for doing nothing. So he is essence buying that presidency by getting all these people to vote in order to get the free money.

It is a smart winning strategy, however it is not right and I am shocked not 1 person in the media is calling him out on it (that I have heard of anyway)

A NATION OF WINERS for OBAMA   October 23rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

We had George Bush and Dick Cheney along with a Republican controlled congress for 6 years. They have done great damage to the United States and most Americans are feeling it wether in their pocketbooks or family members affected by the wars we are in. Darn right the Republicans need to go. As an independent I have it up to here with the GOP and their name calling and lies. I will be voting all Democrat with my vote because I am sick to my stomach with the GOP and their damaging ideologies. They must go!

Ken in Dallas   October 23rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

McCain doesn't understand that capital formation is completely meaningless if the economy has no demand side. If the government runs an economic policy that impoverishes its population, demand becomes depleted, and all the capital in the world won't keep the economy from stagnating.

McCain just doesn't get it, and seems to no longer be capable of learning.

This is hilarious. All of the sudden John McCain is an expert in economics?? If those companies don't want to hire American workers then they weren't for America in the first place. Let them leave. This creates room for American people who do want to hire American workers to start their own corporations. Those companies were flooding our markets with bs anyway and look where they are now. Facing bankruptcy, laying people off, going out of business. And why?? Because of the tax rate?? Pfff...

John, Tampa, FL   October 23rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Folks,

I just voted for History. I am 25 years old and I voted for Obama. I took 10 out of my 18 newly registered friends with me. The other 8 will be going with me in the morning. I am doing this on my own. I just voted for one of the smartest and best prepared candidates for this time in history. I voted for “That One”.

However, he will not win if we don’t vote here in Florida. He is behind in the polls, this is time to take a stand.

demwit   October 23rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

And who do you think pays those taxes for the corporations? Consumers maybe..??

Brian   October 23rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

It's true.

Rational thoughts   October 23rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Clearly the Obama camp has no idea how corporate taxes affect job creation. Look at Ireland for an example of what happens when you lower the rate.

President Barack Obama   October 23rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

It's True!!!!
