Palin told Katie Couric last month she considers herself a feminist.
Palin told Katie Couric last month she considers herself a feminist.

BEAVER, Pennsylvania (CNN) – Does Sarah Palin consider herself a feminist? It depends on which network anchor is asking.

In an interview on NBC Nightly News that aired Thursday, host Brian Williams asked Palin: "Governor, are you a feminist?"

"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," she responded. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different … I'm not going to put a label on myself. "

The vice presidential nominee said she believes in women's rights and equal rights. Palin went on to say that when she was growing up in Alaska, she "was expected to do the same thing that the guys were doing."

"I'm not going label myself feminist or not," she concluded, "but I do believe that American women can recognize in me an advocate and a friend. And I want to be in the White House for them."

But Palin gave a different answer in September when Katie Couric of CBS News asked her, "Do you consider yourself a feminist?"

"I do," Palin answered. "I'm a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed, and to try to do it all, anyway."

In that sit-down, Palin told Couric she defines a feminist as "someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women."

I'm sure they will say anything to win this election. She seems to justify everything based on her personal preferences rather than universal ethics.

melody watkins   October 24th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Palin is not a feminist; pro women she is not. She states she doesn't like labels but she doesn't mind labeling others. This is just more of the hypocracy of the divisive faction of our party whose reign is rapidly ending. We have heard about Joe the plumber , ED the dairyman, Rose the teacher ,Fred the fireman and others which shows just how uninformed and out of touch she is. Not any of these people's income approach 250,00.00 annually. She might as well add Little Miss Muffet, Little Jack Horner and Tinkerbell to this fairytale.

Gov Palin has taken womens movement backards. Her and all the other "June Cleaver's" out there don't mind letting a man define them

Josh in North Carolina   October 24th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Palin's wants to be more than vice president; she wants legislative power. Sarah Palin would be more dangerous than Cheney as vice president because she’s corrupt and doesn’t know what she is doing. Sarah has a lawsuit AGAINST FURTHER PROTECTION OF POLAR BEARS so as not to hinder oil drilling in Alaska's ice-filled waters

A feminist who charged women for rape kits in a state where the violent crimes against women are double the national average? Doesn't sounds like much of a feminist to me?

DonnieJ   October 24th, 2008 5:48 am ET

Like Trollmaster said, someone like Palin who is against abortion in cases of rape or incest is not "for women's rights." Palin is an utter tool.

Guida, your comment sadly speaks for itself. To answer your question, it was 1984. Where were you then?

Go ahead though. Vote for the lying, unlabelable labeler. I believe it's called a "wasted vote".

Joanna   October 24th, 2008 2:39 am ET

Everyone needs to read up on her: anti-abortionist (regardless of circumstances), anti-birthcontrol (even for married couples), anti-sex education in public schools (funded by taxpayer money), promotes abstinence only sex-education, creationism over science (and I also consider myself a Christian, and science is real), required women in her home town to pay for their own rape kits while she was mayor...
The list is long.

This woman has nothing in common with me and I don't consider her "my friend".

It is so ridiculous. She is the master in labeling as we all know... maverick, pro-America and all the lables she gave to Senator Obama. She is a disgrace to the entire country. I don't understand how anyone could vote for Senator McCain with Governor Palin as VP.

Obama/Biden 08... can't wait!

The world is laughing at you America! Get your act together and vote for the best candidate for the job ... not someone who thinks she's a feminist for a minute and not another time. By the way, she's a baggage to the campaign ... admit it. Abusing Governors power by firing the Safety Commissioner and spreading the WEALTH to her kids. Oh .. how about the $150K dolled up expenses to woe Joe the Plumber who earns $250K.

Musicpromo Glandale Ca   October 24th, 2008 2:26 am ET

The fact that she did not turn around and ask someone, ( What am I? Is what's a surprise to me. She has not a clue to what she doing. I've watch enough of this to see it's not going anywhere. After the butt kicking they are going to take on Nov 4th. She will be lucky to get away with her job back in Alaska.

Sucks to be in a Red State   October 24th, 2008 2:23 am ET

The thing that frustrates me the most about this particular election is that I am a democrat in a RED state, namely Utah. So when I read articles like these I am completely outraged that anyone would vote for Palin and McCain. But of course you’ve got to have all the idiots in Utah doing what the LDS Church tells them to do and vote for the conservative ticket. Dear God, can someone please help me! I feel like I am living in the twilight zone!!! Doesn’t anyone understand that the GOP party is running this country into the ground! How hard is that to understand?

I am want no part of her hate, division, anti-american finger pointing, no matter how smart it sounds.

Obama is at teacher and bullies hate school   October 24th, 2008 2:13 am ET

Funny how she has been so quick to unfairly label Barack Obama as a socialist and at terrorist, and so quick to label democrats or any other people who believe differently than her as anti-american but she deflects any labels for herself and says "that's what annoys" Americans. So why does she continue to spew out that garbage to try to get votes?

John McCain & Sarah Palin are not trustworthy just like President Bush & Vice President Cheney.

Sarsh Palin used campaign contributions — part of it government campaign funding — to buy $150,000 of designer fashions and baby clothes at New York's fanciest department stores — Neiman Marcus ($75,062.63 in one shopping spree), Saks Fifth Avenue ($49,425.74), and Bloomingdales (a mere $5,102.71). That doesn't count the $4,716.49 she spent on hair and makeup in September alone. Baby Trig got a mere $295.00 at Pacifier and Steiniauf and Stroller, Inc.

We DON'T want her as VP otherwise she would continue to have wild shopping spree with OUR taxpayers money. She is NUTS.

Proud to be a feminist   October 24th, 2008 1:49 am ET

Palin doesn't believe in labels? I was under the impresson that she got a lot of labels for $150,000. Maybe the problem is that she covets the wrong labels.

i dont know how DUMB Americans electorates are? but i sure know that by 4th of november, if Ms Palin becomes your VP-with a step away from the presidency through the vote casted by the people, then i tell you one thing- AMERICA WILL CEASE TO BE THE LEADER OF THE WORLD- becuase the world will openly see how DUMB America is by electing a Dumb VP and a president who thinks that being a Maverick is about being a POW. for all i care, POW's are always ashamed of themselves but Mc Cain convinced Americans to be proud of him for being captured by Vietrnamese soldiers. so if we are to be proud of him, for wasting America's war plane through his SILLY MISTAKES, THEN what happens to the people that really fought the battle and died. Mccain give me a break and stop trying to fullfill an ambition-for LEADERSHIP IS NOT FANTASY AS YOU SEE IT, IT IS MORE THAN THAT. AT 72 YRS YOU MIGHT BE ENTERING INTO AN EARLY ALZHEIMER, YET YOU WANT TO LEAD THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH WITH A DUMB SPARE TYRE (PALIN) .

Al   October 24th, 2008 1:23 am ET

She doesn't want to label herself, fine. I'll do it for her. She's an idiot. I really didn't it was possible for someone to have less brains than W. Her answers to serious questions are rambling and incoherent. You don't need a Master's degree to see that she's NOT qualified for the job. You just need to be a greedy, power hungry, trickle down economics, tax cutting blinder wearing Republican. However, I have to say, I'm glad McCain picked her, but then it wouldn't have mattered. Obama is on the right side of history and will change this country and the world, for the better. Socialist, he is not. BTW, Canada has universal health care, with a capitalist economy and they've had budgetary surpluses for the past 10 years, while fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Republicans are trying to protect their corporate friends, the insurance companies, defense contractors and Haliburton (Dick Cheney's company)...or don't you recall the billions in untendered contracts. That's corporate socialism, to fight an illegal war. Republicans should be ashamed of themselves. I'm glad its finally coming to an end.

Alexa   October 24th, 2008 1:20 am ET

Denise   October 24th, 2008 1:19 am ET

Palin labels everyone and everything in her life and her surroundings, but she doesn't want to label herself. Why? Because that would pin her down to being one-faced, and if she did that, she'd be caught in her own web.

As a Republican, the whole ticket sickens me. The shrinking McCain Reps want so badly to find something wrong with Obama that they have to reach into the myth bag and spread it around. But it's not the truth and many of us are so totally turned off by this behavior that we're willing to vote for Obama just to get rid of these fear mongering Reps. These people are the same ones who convinced the country that Iraq had WMDs.. how does anyone believe them? Colin Powell certainly doesn't!

Shayna   October 24th, 2008 1:16 am ET

Well I thought she liked labels. Last week she called me anti-American because I don't live in a small town. And her running mates brother called me a communist because I live in Northern Virginia. And she's calling the democratic presidential candidate a socialist every day. It seems to me that Mrs. Palin can be labeled as a LIAR!!!

Joi   October 24th, 2008 1:15 am ET

What if there is an elitist group hiding themselves within the Democrats, whose goal is to attain a power over the proletariat (just like it worked for a while in the USSR), and to accomplish that goal they must stifle the economy (we can do that with higher corporation taxes), limit the size of the proletariat (we can increase abortion, birth control for the poor), negate the influence of religion (dispute the right of clergy to voice their views), while appeasing the proletariat by spreading the wealth (communism).

Just another foot in her mouth interview. She really needs to watch prior interviews of herself to make sure she is giving the same answers. This is a chronic issue with her. McCain claimed that Obama just tells the voters what they want to hear. Palin is the leader on that.. or maybe she's just a dimwit. She has really been an anchor for McCain and he claims she's the best VP he's seen in many years. Maybe his eyesight is going as well. I can't even listen to her anymore. I find myself running for the remote everytime CNN covers another one of her campaign speaches. Getting to be the same way with McCain. If I here 'Joe The Plumber' One more time. It's like watching the same commercial all day long.

MAGDELENA   October 24th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Palin a feminist?!! She's a small minded, uninformed woman of average intelligence who didn't even read the constitution and what it states about the role of the vice presidency. She certainly doesn't represent American women by wanting to take their right to choose away. I can't wait for AK to take her back & hopefully she'll fade into obscurity.

Carl   October 24th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Ha.. someone just called Palin intelligent in a comment. I find that funny. Intelligent people know when they are not ready to have the most powerful job in the United States. I say this with all seriousness, Palin is a joke. She abused her power as Governor, she used her power to get her children free trips and for them to stay at fancy hotels. She is just like a washington insider but is far enough away that it seems so "quaint." Im a way I hope she does run later on, because she will be very easy to beat!

Not-Your-ideal-Minority   October 24th, 2008 1:03 am ET

How is she a "typical" American? I'm sorry, but the typical American woman right now does not have 150K to spend on her wardrobe. She's too busy trying to make her mortage payment (if her house hasn't been foreclosed already), put food on the table, gas in her car, and afford college for her kids.

And a master's degree doesn't = intelligence. Bush went to Yale, look at him. 'Nuff said.

Patti   October 24th, 2008 1:02 am ET

She is really scary in that same interview with Brian Williams he asked her if she thought if someone bombed an abortion clinic would it be an act of domestic terroist? She said Ayers bombed innocent people and when asked again if bombing an abortion clinic was domestic terroist. She said it wasn't a terroist act. I guess she feels that people at the abortion clinic aren't innocent people.

Palin go Home   October 24th, 2008 1:01 am ET

I been listening to Sarah Palin and I was shocked. She is full of negativity and hatred and than what she did with the cop. Now if anyone within the right mind will listen to her and examined her act of firing the cop would make sense. It shows that how much hate she has when things doesn’t go her way. On top of it when I listen to news or read different website, it is always how she wants to run the campaign and how they are forcing McCain to do the thing their way. Is she running for the president? Is she running this campaign? Do we want to give her authority to our Nuclear Weapons so she can nuke rest of the world if things don’t go her way? I can see another Dick Chanie.

Leon Ubly Michigan   October 24th, 2008 1:00 am ET

After reading the blogs during the Primariea and the general election it is very clear that most of the Obama backers are HATERS OF ANYONE WHO DOESN'T BACK OBAMA. They called Clinton backers every name in the book and are now doing the same with McCain/Palin. If you thought there was Political animosity in this country during the Clinton and Bush years you ain't seen anything yet. These rabid people sound like a bunch of 2nd graders on the playground very little discussion just name calling.

Read the words of Huckabee:

"Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama," Huckabee told reporters in Tokyo, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.
Huckabee praised the country for getting "to a point where we did not see his color but we truly saw his charisma, his message and what he brought to the campaign trail."
"When people are really hurting — and they are right now — they're not looking at a person's race," he added.

Then, google PNAC before allowing McCain/Palin to deceive you into voting for them.

Women do have the right to choose. They can choose to abstain from sex. After intercourse, they lost their choice of the consequence. Abortion is murder. Especially the late term abortions that Oboma supports.

She thinks that a woman who's raped should be forced to give birth to her rapist's child. That's no feminist. That's someone who has no business in government.

HouseDiva   October 24th, 2008 12:44 am ET

and another thing...i'm not buying this story about this woman who says that she was mugged by an Obama supporter.

the B is backwards on her face...

how do we not know if it were a Bob Barr supporter?

that scratch on her face would have been a laceration, because her struggling would have made him cut her deeper.

why did she refuse medical treatment? if this was a mugger with a filthy knife i would want to be checked out by a doctor.

if she was at the ATM why didn't the ATM camera catch the footage?

she says she had a friend with her...why didn't the friend help?

this lady is a fraud!!!!!!

FAUX news is having a field day with this story, and when the truth comes out that this woman was NOT attacked by an Obama supporter...Faux will continue to make this lie turn into the truth for their brainwashed viewers.

and for all you McCain supporters in here....NO MORE!!!! if you dont like what people are commenting on in here...go to Faux's website.

Mike O   October 24th, 2008 12:43 am ET

The terrified hysteria this woman causes among some of the Obama supporters is just laughable. Of course, it depends on how you define a feminist; she is by some definitions (like the one given earlier), but not by a Gloria Steinem definition.

If she become vice president, I have a few suggestions for her press secretary: Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, or Joe the Plumber. Any of them would be fun.

ralph tyler   October 24th, 2008 12:43 am ET

If Sarah Palin is the best America can come up with then we are in serious trouble. She has the same fundamental misunderstandings of our government that Mr. Bush does. Here's a question I would like to see her answer without her Cliff Notes: What is more important in America: Freedom or safety?

Charlie Bradley   October 24th, 2008 12:41 am ET

THANK GOD she is going back home tomorrow to give her deposition in the Troupergate scandal. I hope the investigation moves FAST and that by November 1, she will either be disqualified legally, or arrested for her misdeeds.

The American people wil get a reprieve from this woman who can't string together one coherent thought. I would compare her to Rose Nylund but I don't want to insult the Golden Girls, or Betty White.

Thomas in PDX   October 24th, 2008 12:40 am ET

What has not already been said that could possibly be added now? Sarah Palin is absolutely wrong for this country as a whole. She only represents a small, bigoted, violent and anti-American portion of the country that wishes to force its views on others. Her answers are not formulated to give you nay insight into her politics, because to do so would be to show just how little she has to offer.

Republican supporters are among the most rabid in the world, and will toe the party line no matter who is put on the ticket. You could just have easily put a stale tuna fish sandwich on the ticket as McCain's veep and they would come up with a thousand and one reasons as to why that sandwich would be the ideal candidate. It's disgusting, and shows just how little is actually going on in the head of your average Republican.

But that is why the intellectually stunted vote for the GOP time and time again – they feel excluded from the Democratic party, since that is where your educators, scientists, and other people of actual worth dedicate their vote. They would rather wallow in their own ignorance and vote mindlessly for a party that claims to understand them, rather than improve themselves and better the world with a more centrist philosophy.

Sarah Palin represents that group of people – the less-than-spectacular America that struggles to make its voice heard, even when it is painfully obvious that no one of any real worth cares about what they think.

Rob   October 24th, 2008 12:39 am ET

Never met a 150,000 dollar feminist who fires people for no apparent reason and lies about it. A feminist who hides the FACT that her daughter had a child and she is pawing it off as her own. A feminist who cannot control her own kids, but loves to hunt animals from aircraft. She may not be afeminist, but there are alot of things wrong with Sarah.Palin!

Paradise   October 24th, 2008 12:36 am ET

John McCain has gone Nickelodeon on the campaign trail. Featuring characters like:
1. Sam Wurzelbacher as Joe the plumber
2. Sarah Palin as Dora the Explorer
3. Joe Lieberman as Bob the builder
4. RNC as Wonderpets

Whats gonna work, Team work

m c   October 24th, 2008 12:35 am ET

Sarah Palin resonates with most American women, because she IS like most American women-hard-working, and family-oriented. She manages a career AND a family. Isn't that what the feminist movement was REALLY about. People-stop this ridiculous business that she is not smart. Listen to her speak, for God's sake, then listen to Joe Biden. Biden does not make sense, he rants. Obama goes on and on and says NOTHING. My husband and I both hold master degrees, so we are fairly intelligent and we see McCain/Palin as genuine and intelligent and Obama/Biden as the exact opposite.

Robin   October 24th, 2008 12:34 am ET

Palin doesn't want to use labels? Then what was all this talk about her being a Maverick, a Reformer, a Hockey Mom, and a Pit bull in Lipstick?

Oh that's right it was just a clever facade, she squanders money, and abuses power. In FACT! She is the poster child politician of who McCain campaign wanted to reform.

The irony of it all...

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   October 24th, 2008 12:34 am ET

As a woman who fought hard during the 1960's and 1970's to give the likes of Sarah Palin the opportunities she enjoys today, this woman is writhing in the bottom of the snake pit, in my opinion.

She is NOT a feminist, she has no idea what a "feminist" is, she has reaped all the benefits that those women like me have worked so hard for, and she dare not compare herself to us.

Yessenia Rivera   October 24th, 2008 12:29 am ET

I wonder why the media no longer make fun of her.... she is giving more interviews, but she is still mumbling around the answers, not really making a clear point, and in broken English. It looks that because she overcame expectations in the VP debate, she was cleared to go on record talking non-sense.... really, the only thing she knows how to do really well is to attack Obama, and she seems to enjoy it as well, but when the question is geared to subjects of substance, she is an empty suit. I am no longer amused by her stupidity... really. I now change the channel whenever I see her on the news. I really want Nov 4th to be over so we can move on with our lives, and hopefully Obama and his team will start working on putting our country back on the right path.

And did she really say people don't like hearing places, people, backgrounds, labeled different? That's what her ENTIRE campaign has been about! Obama, "Pro-America", COME ON!

These two clowns are contradicting themselves left right and centre. And then they have the gall to go and say things like this, and think the American people are stupid enough to fall for it. Prove them wrong, deny them the chance to screw the country for another 4 years!

All of that BS is just a way to keep Obama from becoming president. If there were any truth to any of that, it would be used. You can bet your life on that.

Years ago, they used guns, water hoses and all kinds of violent attacks to avoid a person of color gaining equal rights. Now, because there are so many protection laws along with the fact that people aren't afraid to fight back, they use lies to keep the division going.

This woman is a NUT JOB. I agree with "She refused to admit that bombing an abortion clininc is terrorism"

Terrorism to me, is someone or something which threatens our national security by undermining the laws of the land and abuse of power. She should re-imburse EVER single contributor to the McCain Campaign because of her using THOSE funds for her own personal wardrobe. I don't give a spit if she DID wear it on some cockamamie TV show or at some cockamamie campaign stop. That money was supposed to go towards GETTING Sen. McCain elected, not to cover up her rather broad backside. And Terrorists are those who take taxpayers money, to pay for personal trips for her children. Tell me how does "Taking the kids to watch Daddy in a dog race" equate to government business? it doesn't. It's not just the people of Alaska she took tax dollars from, its MINE and YOUR tax dollars she has used for her own personal gains.

You don't have to use a gun or a bomb to be a terrorist. Sarah Palin, YOU are a terrorist!!

A dolt, a cold blooded, ruthless, egomaniac with the grandiosity of a dictator or a lunatic with the mania of uncontrolled bipolar or schizophrenic disorders, the woman lacks moral fiber and is unethical, dishonest, a thief and pathological liar, a cheater on her husband and with others, an abuser of Gov't position power, a cruel murderer of helpless wildlife, a destroyer of the Alaskan wilderness and the Polar bears and their habitat. She is demented, stupid, cheap, twisted, ignorant, uneducated, and a piece of rotten Trailer Park trash like her kids with strange trailer park names and free clothing and hotel stays and travel on the Alaskan taxpayers' dime and on the Republican campaign's publically funded dime. She is a limelight hogging moron and should be in the position of the wolves and the moose and bears she slaughters daily. Now she is getting her returns. Just giving her the power of a mayor in a small time corrupted her to the point where she attempted to ban books that didn't go along with her religion from a library, and attempted to fire the librarian who declined to remove the books.

Think how corrupted she would become as president.

In fact, during the primaries, a woman was trying to dig up dirt on this very subject. Guess what she found? A birth announcement in the newspaper in Honolulu, Hawaii about the birth of Barack Obama! He is definitely a citizen, so tell your GOP machine to stop spoon-feeding you lies.

Its a Sly question, aimed to slander and mislead Mrs.Palin's Character. Where are the questions the Democrats say they want answered? Everyone can tell the rudness of all their interviews. What the Democrats are not figuring on, is that alot of Americans will begin to pull their investments out , rather than let that Shyster control their monies. Why not investigate Obama's background – birth certificate, lawsuit regarding eligibility to be the president, college transcripts, thesis, etc….where are these things? We AMERICANS apply for jobs, we go through a throughout background check….why does Barack get special treatment? Humm……

Are you implying that Obama is not or may not be an American? If I am not mistaken McCain was born somewhere in South or Central America. The Constitution states that you must be BORN IN THE UNITED STATES TO BE PRESIDENT. Who is getting the special treatment now?

insider   October 24th, 2008 12:04 am ET

She was a feminist when Couric asked that question but when Williams ask the question she says "I'm not gonna label myself anything” …What happened to Maverick, Hockey Mom, Pit Bull with lipstick just to name a few labels… How bout the labels your giving others. Socialist, Terrorist, Joe sixpack....bla bla blab!!!

Palin please just go away, every time you open your mouth something stupid comes out!

bob in LA   October 24th, 2008 12:03 am ET

Doesn't like labels???? Terrorist? Socialist?Pro American?
And now...designer labels!
Let me add one- useless

Pat   October 24th, 2008 12:03 am ET

I think she would have to understand the REAL meaning of feminist for her to know how to answer the question. I am willing to bet she is unclear about her answer here because she is clueless about femenists role in society. It's like Fareed Zakaria said a while back..."She doesn't really understand the question." Don't ask her things that are based on common knowledge material like which newspaper she reads or which judicial decision she doesn't agree with or whether she is a feminist or not. Because, she is not interested in common knowledge stuff that any 3rd grader from Gladyswood Elementary would know. But she gives a mean campaign stump.

The problem with Sarah Palin is that is 'dangerously uncurious' Arian Huffington said last night. And I couldn't agree more.

sharon   October 24th, 2008 12:03 am ET

she regularly slips up and shows us how she sees herself – "in the white house". i'd like someone to confront her about this. i have no doubt that she fully intends to be president. if that's the outcome, we're moving to nova scotia.

Navy Vet   October 24th, 2008 12:01 am ET

"All women should be proud of the Palin/MacCain ticket. When in the history of our country we had a woman fit, gutsy, smart and dressing well running for the vice presidency of our nation? Wake up ladies we now have an opportunity to understand our role in history and she is being lead by one of our hero soldiers."

Pardon me: what illegal drug of choice were you taking at the time you wrote that garbage? Yes, Palin dresses well and you betcha she will not give those clothes to charity. That's a cover story. Mighty expensive clothes to be giving to charity.
She is setting women back 100 years every time she speaks. I am not proud of those two bigots, McCain/Palin. It seems most women are repulsed by her and her negative rhetoric. And McCain's hero status has since diminished over the years. Now he's seen as a bitter, angry bigot who is has finally come out of the closet and showed his true colors.
I will not be voting for McCain or Palin. We will be in serious danger if that ticket wins. A win with that ticket will be every terrorist's dream.

jerzeegrl 4 obama   October 24th, 2008 12:01 am ET

I want to thank Gov. Palin for the laughs! Thanks for making SNL funny again and providing some great late night material.

I'm glad that she's not labeling herself. she would be lying if she were to suggest that she or her party were pro-women/feminist.the GOP used her and she allowed herself to be be used. They deserve each other.

Jane SixPack   October 24th, 2008 12:00 am ET

If Obama becomes POTUS everyone will hate him by then!

Global depression on the way with Obama! :(

Susan   October 23rd, 2008 11:58 pm ET

Sarah has been an energizing figure and force and I'm proud of her! It takes guts and smarts to stand up to the pro Obama media groups. I admire and respect her. She and McCain will make the changes America needs at this time. Only McCain Palin! No Obama Biden.

Steward   October 23rd, 2008 11:56 pm ET

Palin would make a better president than Barack Obama. She has already proved herself. He has been present...how many times.

Marc PDX   October 23rd, 2008 11:56 pm ET

And the ambush interviews continue... What am I talking about? How much coverage is there of Biden? He's had several notable gaffes in the past week alone, but the MSM is only interested in trying to trip up Sarah Palin on something. Why do you Dems hate her so much? She's not more conservative than many other Republicans. Is it simply because she's a woman who is also a Republican. Did that break a taboo of yours? Why don't you just take her out back and beat the carp out of her? You know you want to. LOL! Nice caring, understanding Dems! Peace and love baby... :D

jw   October 23rd, 2008 11:56 pm ET

Palin is not feminist, she is an EXTREMIST! She does not believe in woman's right and she is so right winged that is scary. She destroyed the chance to show the world that working women can be smart and have a work/life balance. All she did is abuse her power and ran all her expenses to taxpayer in order to travel with her kids. She is a SHAME to women in America. Please ask her to return to Alaska after 11/4.

JENNIFER   October 23rd, 2008 11:56 pm ET

How did she get elected??? Alaskans ... what were you thinking?

aware   October 23rd, 2008 11:55 pm ET

I voted for McCain/Palin 08! They are America’s only hope this election!

But, I can wait to vote for Palin in 2012 if B O wins in 08. By then Obama-hate will be as bad as Bush-hate is today!

I went through Trudeau-mania and the huge disappointment that followed his equivocating reign!

However, Obama will lead us into a global depression the likes of which we have never experienced! :(

Palin is more experienced than Obama and doesn’t keep putting her foot in her mouth like Biden!

And, Palin is authentic, intuitive, energetic, wise, smart, courageous, tough, a servant leader, a very quick study, (it took Obama months to learn what she has picked up in weeks), and she has a strong moral center plus American values!

Also, the "least of these" wee ones deserve protection not disposal!

ST.ED   October 23rd, 2008 11:55 pm ET

GUIDA CURTIS.........How can you possibly be proud of a woman who has already been convicted of an ethics violation, can't construct a correct sentance or answer a question from a 3rd grader correctly? She is an example of a woman who has let her mouth override her capabilities, outright lied. She is a prime example of trailer trash.

Pardon Me: I'd like to know what drugs you were taking when you wrote this garbage. Proud of those two bigots? I don't think so. You are right – she's dressing very well and I can betcha she will not give those clothes to charity. I betcha we see her in pictures after the election, months later, with those clothes on. The charity will be her closet.
McCain might be a Navy hero but not everybody gets all gushy about that stuff. He's been commended for his service in the Navy and that's it. Just because he was captured and was a POW for five years does not make him President capable. And if he was so great at solving everything, why hasn't he done more for as long as he's been in the Senate. Things that make you go: Hmmmmmmmm!

Sandy   October 23rd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

To Guida Curtis who said we women should be proud because "When in the history of our country we had a woman fit, gutsy, smart and dressing well running for the vice presidency of our nation". Are you kidding me? Those are the characteristics of a candidate that are going to make you proud she's a woman? Fit, gutsy and dressing well? Yes, I know you said smart, but you lose points for burying it in those other three. I want a proud feminist who believes in and strives for women's equality. Not a mean spirited, say anything show piece who doesn't have to keep repeating that she is a maverick, a pitbull, a fighter, experienced, because it will be OBVIOUS.

keli   October 23rd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

i can't stand her. she may represent some women, but i don't think she represents the women who have worked hard, died, or suffered to advance women forward. how can she consider herself a friend to women when she believes a rape or incest victim should bear the child of the hideous crime?

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   October 23rd, 2008 11:49 pm ET

TO GUIDA CURTIS:

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I respect your view, even though I do not share it.

Here is what women who do not agree with Palin think:

Palin is riding on the shoulders of the women who came before her whom her party has demonized for years and years.

Palin would take away a woman's right to choose what happens to her body.

Palin does not represent the vast majority of American women.

While I do not agree nor support Gov. Palin, I am glad that finally the Republicans have a woman on their ticket.

SHELLI1313   October 23rd, 2008 11:48 pm ET

Failin Palin is the biggest butt hole in the world. She is not America friendly, nor does she care about her children's education. They are with her 90% of the time along with her non working husband. She is a lier, cheater and to top it off she is stupid. $150,000 on clothing, jewls, purses for her, her husband, and her children. Makes me sick to my stomach

OK, I've lost what little respect I had for this woman. I never know what's happening with her next. Mrs. Palin can't remember (or figure out) where she stands on basic issues, doesn't know thde job description of a V.P., allows the McCain campaign to lavish her with $150,000 worth of wardrobe while calling Obama an elitist, and then makes sure we understand that Obama "Pals around with terrorists".
What do people see in this woman?!?! And what kind of "maverick" is she anyway? I don't get it.

Women have always been "expected" to do the same as the guys, the problem is that women get paid less to do the same thing as the guys. So Palin, where do you stand on womens rights? Yea thats right she dosn't care, she is where she wants to be. Well almost.

Audacity   October 23rd, 2008 11:37 pm ET

Pfft, she'll set back woman's rights by 20 years if she is elected, mark my words people, her entire selection is an insult to feminist everywhere.

We're not suppose to know what she thinks. She doesn't do real interviews 'cause they're full of 'gotcha questions'...like, what does the VP do?

mary   October 23rd, 2008 11:36 pm ET

Does Sarah Palin spend that kind of money from the government of Alaska, I wonder what the people of the state of Alaska think of her being so free with the peoples money. I think Alaska should question where the money from the sale of the airplane went and she did not return the money from the bridge to nowhere and other things. She legally steals and it is OK. If you or I steal, guess where we will go.

Rose Black   October 23rd, 2008 11:36 pm ET

Neely   October 23rd, 2008 11:32 pm ET

Okay, so maybe there is so little new "news" today that we are noticing and commenting on the minutia, but did anyone acknowledge the gargantuan polar bear pin on Sarah Palin's designer blouse today? Palin has publicly opposed the addition of the polar bear to the Endangered Species list, stating (and I'm paraphrasing here) there is no evidence linking climate change to impact on the natural world. Palin's stance as an "energy expert" on climate change warrants more attention, but the decreasing population of the polar bear has been well documented. Although it may seem minor in the grand scheme of things, Palin's pin appears to be an attempt to suggest she is an advocate of the polar bear, and perhaps the environment. I find this insulting, and I'd like to add that as a woman, I am not inspired by Palin for this and many other reasons, and I will not feel represented by her in the White House.

Sarah Palin is destroying the future of women. This is a person that barely, just barely, graduated from college. If she were to be elected, she would be, could not avoid being, a horrendous failure. That will set women's rights back 50 years.

Sarah Palin a feminist...........what a joke. Ask her what a feminist is. Like McCain she sways with whatever or whoever they think will give them a vote. Caribou Barbie doesn't have a clue. Send her back to Alaska where she can wave to Russia, allow coyotes to be shot from helicopters and along with her husband reinstate themselves in the Alaskan Independent Party that wants to secede from the US of A.

Enough of the hockey mom who has no clue of what a real mom is, one who has to scrimp and save, not one who bills the government for trips for her kids who weren't invited, but yet charged her state for their expenses or someone who wears clothes that cost more than most people make in three, four or five years.

And the Republicans think women will vote for her because Hillary didn't win the Dem nomination. Please.......Give us a break. Just because she wears a skirt doesn't mean we will vote for her. Reminds me of Bush Sr.......he chose Dan Quayle because he was handsome and he thought women would vote for him. Republicans have no clue as to how women vote. GREAT for Obama.

alvino   October 23rd, 2008 11:26 pm ET

BK   October 23rd, 2008 11:25 pm ET

CNN you report on stupid stuff like this and Biden is saying something stupid everyday. Is this a double standard? Where is your fair reporting? Maybe you should check Bidens medical record and see if he is mentally capable of being VP. No one in history has made as many stupid statements as Biden and your bashing Gov. Palin?

Pat in IL   October 23rd, 2008 11:23 pm ET

She is about as far away from being a feminist as a woman can be. Being a feminist is way more than just believing in equal pay, etc.
The important thing here, though, is that we can't really know Palin because she is constantly just saying whatever comes out of her mouth at any given time, and there isn't much consistency. Kind of like a Stepford wife with a defective part.

Jim   October 23rd, 2008 11:23 pm ET

Do we really need any more information about Palin? We have a pretty good picture already.

Frank   October 23rd, 2008 11:23 pm ET

CNN, you have lost all credibility in being objective during this election! Too bad for you and your crew. You can go and do something with yourselves! Or perhaps McCain and Palin will do that to you once they are elected!!!!

CNN obsessed with Palin   October 23rd, 2008 11:22 pm ET

CNN – Are you obsessed with Caribou Barbie? “you betcha you are” She is in every other headline you write about. Talk about slanted.

Earlier you’re reporting on and aiding in her Fear Mongering tactics. The McBush/Fargo ticket is throwing the kitchen sink trying a different theme each day campaign and CNN is reporting on it like there is no other news. I guess drama queen news makes for more viewers.

Keep it positive CNN, let McCain be the grumpy old negative man.

Vote – Obama/Biden 08’

Country first   October 23rd, 2008 11:22 pm ET

When you go out there to vote you better pay good attention and double check your vote before you summit it. In some ste if not all the republicans fix the machine up. If you vote straight democratic they fix the machine so your presidential vote go for McCain intead of Barack. So you might think you vote for Barack and the machine was fix and it goes the other way. So pay good attention to make sure your presidential vote goes to your choosing candidate. These are disgusting tactics that the republicans are using right now in some part of Texas and may be nationwide. We need fair and free election so rigging these machines is nothing but disgusting tactics. Also when you go to the polling place no political T-shirt because they will turn you away.

Paul   October 23rd, 2008 11:21 pm ET

If Obama gets elected, four years from now when you are unemployed, pennyless, and mad at Congress; you'll owe all of us who told you idiots not to vote for him a big apology. Obama only knows how to do one thing, and that's win (steal) elections. The man would have sold his soul to be President, and once he's President, the American people will be at the mercy of the worst Congress in American history. Do you people actually think he'll ever stand up to his party much less hold anybody accountable. McCain done it with the Boeing Tanker Deal; Palin done it with the fraud and waste going on in Alaska. The American people just simply got played. Unfortuately, McCain campaign folks are simply not up to the task. They are boring and reactive, not proactive. They have not delivered the positive message and have done McCain, who is the better man and would be President, a hugh disservice. Please folks, this nation deserves better than to be suckered like this. I am an independent but know these guys records very will, don't get played be Obama's smooth talk express. Don't let this nation be at the mercy of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. If McCain loses, there is no one left to hold Congress accountable for there actions, no one to protect us from bad policies, no one to point out corruption because neither the media (to liberal) nor Obama will. We need McCain in the White House, MCCAIN IS NO GEORGE BUSH.

Listen to Our Children   October 23rd, 2008 11:19 pm ET

CNN is the WORST News Organization EVER. One-sided – BIAS, baby, BIASED!

It's taken 20 months of not listening to our children to realize that most of your 'FACT CHECKS' aren't factual but bias against an EXPERIENCED candidate.

GONE are the 1991 Iraqi War fair reporting days. SELL OUTS to the $450M dollar presidential candidate that only has to 'talk the talk' because he's never 'walked the walk' besides as an community organizer.

THIS CRIMINAL of a Presidential candidate forced out his challengers by pulling the same dirty politics as CNN is pulling by reporting that they're the MOST RECOGNIZED NEWS ORGANIZATION..yeah, recognized for being one-sided.

Times are tough and although Obama, CNN, Nancy 'No Nuts' Pelosi, Harry 'InSearchlight of knowledge' Reid and Howard 'YEEHAW' Dean have rigged this election..the middle america that will now be ready to pay higher taxes to fund the Democratic Plan or 'TAX AND SPEND' can only PRAY that in 2012..HILLARY RUNS AGAIN and the other 17 million that didn't vote for her, does.

Why couldn't we remember that the 90's under Clinton worked..and believed just maybe, she as his partner, had something to do with the success he had..

Also – PRAY that Pelosi and Reid get FIRED by the American Voter.

Where is the apology CNN for Drew Griffin lying about Gov. Palin? Drew Griffin blew it off like it was nothing. You owe Gov. Palin an apology. You have zero criedibility. I put you in the same trash can as MSM with your unfair reporting. You are the Obama network. How can you cover an election and be so unfair to McCain/Palin?

Lee M   October 23rd, 2008 11:16 pm ET

Well she had a few months of intensive coaching. Frankly the old clueless Sarah Palin was more "refreshing" than the new phony "coached" one. She was a clueless puppet before, and now she is a trained puppet.

"Country Fist" must have been on McCain's mind when he picked the "most qualified VP candidate ever" as he said.

Believe that and you voted for Bush twice and now will vote for McSame.

Bigbubba   October 23rd, 2008 11:16 pm ET

She is great at labels. She calls Obama all kinds of names. Socialist, terrorist, liberal tax and spender.

Maybe she just needs a few hints for her own Party candidates. How about Senile McCain, Geriatric McCain, Elitist McCain (after all, they called Obama elitist and Obama knows how many houses he owns). OK, how about Palin the simple, Palin the unethical, Palin the future Mother-in-law of a high school dropout.

See, all she needs is a few hints. Isn't this fun.

Wasn't it only last week that you labeled some parts of America as "real-America", as people you come to your rallies as "patriotic", Obama as "wealth-spender"? Is this woman drugged? She seems to be in difference states of consciousness every time she talks. She can't recall what she said in the past... VERY SCARY indeed as a VP.

Either she doesn't know what she believes in, or she is so morally shallow she will say whatever anyone wants to hear. Or maybe it is that she is so intellectually shallow that she really doesn't know what a feminist is, just like she doesn't know what a VP does. Her ability to so easily change directions 180 degrees makes her a perfect fit in the Weathervane McCain campaign.

Jill   October 23rd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Forgot to add that for someone who spent $150,000 on clothes in one month -should not be allowed to comment on anything. There are people starving, losing the homes, jobs and struggling. And this idiot stands on stage in a new expensive wardrobe telling people she is just like them. I don't think so Ms Palin. Sarah Palin is NO feminist...

she cant even make her husband stay home with the kids to ensure that they get an education..eat...get dressed, practice safe sex, and take care of the house.

Todd has no job, so why is he following his wife around like a jealous creep.

I'm a Dj and sometimes my gig takes me to other cities...i also have 4 children who attend school EVERY DAY.

When I'm gone; my husband takes care of EVERYTHING at home...I'd leave him if he has to follow me everywhere with the kids while i make a living.

Sarah Palin is a poor representation of a working mother.

Sarah Palin is truly frightening.

She is, essentially, against women and anything they stand for.

She doesn't support a woman's right to choose. She believes that a woman who suffers a horrific crime against women should have to pull into a hospital emergency room and pay for her exam.

I think we should follow Senator Obama's lead and simply refuse to even make further comments on her. As a politician and potential representative of the American people, she deserves to be rendered irrelevant and forgettable.

Independent Woman Voting For Obama   October 23rd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

I'm registered as an Independent (no party). As a 32-year-old single college-educated white woman who has never been married or even engaged, it has been too easy to be cynical about the future.

The media, being political as it always is—whether overtly or covertly—has made it perfectly clear that everything is insanely whacked: divorce rates, medical bills, working multiple jobs, mortgages, and raising children under the aegis of a plethora of municipal, state, and federal regulations that do not allow for parental self-determination.

I am voting for Obama because for the first time, I see myself becoming OPTIMISTIC about the future.

I’ve always had a vague feeling that it would be awfully nice to get married or form a partnership with someone special, someone with whom I could spend many more years, creating a cozy home and raising a family.

I sure as heck hope that we Americans do the smart thing and keep Palin out of Washington, DC, so that there'll be no further confusion over feminist (equal) rights and other important things such as parental self-determination in creating families, and supporting the economy Main-Street style so that all of our families, both existing and future ones, will have better chances in the future.

guida curtis   October 23rd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

All women should be proud of the Palin/MacCain ticket. When in the history of our country we had a woman fit, gutsy, smart and dressing well running for the vice presidency of our nation? Wake up ladies we now have an opportunity to understand our role in history and she is being lead by one of our hero soldiers.

Ellie in Alaska   October 23rd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Please not that not all women in Alaska think Sarah Palin is qualified to be a VP. She won her republican primary because the incombent was the lowest rated worst governor Alaska has ever had.

MLH   October 23rd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

It isn't what she labels herself that counts, it is what we label her. Let it not be 'Vice-President.'

Voted Obama '08

Karl   October 23rd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Well, well. I guess Brian caught Bimbo with her head bobbing the other way. How about a Sarah bobble head doll to raise funds for her wardrobe? It conveys the image AND if finances the campaign!

Rose   October 23rd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

I believe in women's rights and I'm glad either way that women have gotten this far. I'm even happier that I can vote and have the right to choose. But I'm sorry Palin... it won't be you. If anything you are souring the image of women in politics. Please women out there don't vote for McCain/Palin just because you supported Hillary. They are nothing alike and we will have our day soon enough – but Obama is who we need for at least the next 4 years. McCain/Palin – the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. We don't WANT change. We don't HOPE for change. Change we NEED! And I'm demanding just such when I vote OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

Jane Independent   October 23rd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Actually, I don't know what a feminist is anymore either. If you are pro-choice, then it seems you can't – diametrically opposed – mutually exclusive- possibly be a feminist. At least that's the impression I get these days. N.O.W. is really N.O.L.W. Guess what "L" is in that acronym?

Michael Ray Thompson   October 23rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

O.K. Sarah Palin is the VP pick for John McCain. So she's a feminist. I would accept Mickey Mouse as VP under John McCain, who is an American hero.

VETS4Obama   October 23rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

PLEASE!!! WOW! She does not want to label herself? The smart mouthed power abuser has no problem labeling everyone else!!! What a "Christian"! Thank God in 12 more days we will be sending her and her $150,000 wardrobe back to the igloo she came from!!!

Independent White Woman   October 23rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Palin--"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," she responded. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different … I'm not going to put a label on myself. "

Why do you label Senator Obama ........LIAR!!!

Anne   October 23rd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I don't know too many "feminists" that would spend $150K on clothing. She also seems to like labels when they're attached to the back of her outfits or emblazoned on her credit card receipts. Please, for the love of God and the USA, send this woman and her family packing back to Alaska. She truly scares me.

Ann   October 23rd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Not only is a feminist described as someone who believes in equal rights for both sexes, but can also be described as activity that promotes the rights of women and their interests. Everyone knows where she stands on THAT issue. She SHOULD be backing away from the feminist "label".... she has never been a true supporter of women's rights, and she knows it.

Susan   October 23rd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I will just label her a megalomaniac

Kathy in Minnesota   October 23rd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I am more a FEMINIST than Sarah Palin will ever consider herself to be. Who is she kidding???

Ian K   October 23rd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Funny how she has spent so much time labeling parts of the country "pro-America" and Labeling Obama as a "Socialist". But when asked if she is a feminist she balks that labels have been annoying Americans.

Similar to her attacks on Obama for supporting the different hometown sports teams, then doing the EXACT same thing herself. If i saw these things happening with a child, I would sit them down and explain that they need to treat others as they would like to be treated. You know, that old "Golden Rule".

If this is any indication of how she conducts herself, she has no business "Running the Senate", aka being the VP. Please, someone get us a REAL feminist so we can compare and contrast.

what do you expect   October 23rd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

After 2 months of the Carl Rove school of don't tell'em anything politics. She has earned her diploma in the school of deceptive politics.

Straight Shooter   October 23rd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

How is this news? Palin has two good qualities: looks and big talk. She's perfect for Miss Alaska or a sportscaster, because of those two qualities. Those two qualities also will win her party some votes.

Bottom line: she doesn't have the intellect, experience, or social skills to run our government.

Jake from BOSTON   October 23rd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

I'm sick of this monster. So she must not want the "Maverick" label anymore, either?

Kris K in RM,CA   October 23rd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Isn't pro-life oppression against women? I think it is.Pro choice gives every women to make up her own mind.I would not have an abortion but I will not speak for all women. They deserve the right to choose their own path.
Palin is not a feminist. She is an ego bound human that is out of control and very dangerous. She justifies everything she does as her"right". I wonder how McCain feels about her "taking over" from him and canpaigning for 2012? There is no limit to her nerve.

Walt   October 23rd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

OK, I am confused. Did she not just label part of the country late last week or last weekend? Didn't she say that there were pro-America parts of the country. Is this woman real?

Are her supporters really, really naive or are they just ignoring all of this information?

Jak   October 23rd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Give Sarah a break. Considering the confusion she has over the role of Vice President, she may simply not know what a feminist is.

Glen   October 23rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Another flip-flop from Palin, what a surprise.

The woman will say anything to be elected. I wonder how much the outfit she was wearing today was worth as she tries to make voters believe that she is "Jane 6 pack".

No Hillary = No Obama   October 23rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Changing one's tune – I would say that comment drips of sacrasm – oh wait, let's see who wrote it – oh yea, the neanderthal man. Feminist is so last decade. The woman runs a state government. Leave it to CNN to undermine woman with legitimized power – you know like CNN did with Hillary Clinton. All woman are feminists – it's known as evolution – but neanderthal thinking hasn't caught up.

Anthony   October 23rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

HYPOCRITE.
She is an evil, ugly type of woman.
I would love nothing more than to see her and Hillary in a debate. But then again, is it really fair to drag Hillary ALL THE WAY DOWN to this womans level, and put them on equal footing?

I think not...

guida curtis   October 23rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Sara Palin seems to be a woman free of tabus and prejudices. She understands her role in history. It just happens that she was born a female and the players at this time in history are not developed to understand her importance. John McCain is the only one who recognizes this phenomena.

Jill   October 23rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Well a feminist, Ms Palin, would allow women to decide for themselves what to do about a pregnancy. they would also support a candidate who voted for equal pay for women. I also love the comment about not labeling people. Was she not the same Sarah Palin who labeled small town america as the "real america" and those of us in cities, and not republican as not real americans. Hopefully america, and especially women who actually believe in women rights, will show her the exit door on election day. And All I have to say don't let hit you on the butt on your way OUT!!!.

Jo from Dallas   October 23rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

What a surprise! Sarah changed her mind. Did anyone notice how she took over the interview with Brian Williams today and said she wanted to be there for women in the White House? She's planning for her future and believe me we all need to take notice and run for the hills.

Chris in Va.   October 23rd, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Truth In Politics   October 23rd, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Gov. Sarah Palin has finally realized that people, Dem, Rep, and Ind are seeing through the false images she is attempting to present.
Gov. Sarah Palin is corrupt and Senator John McCain knew she was the wrong individual to have as a running mate. Governor Palin desires the United States to pay for her children. It is clear that the direction she is leading the state of Alaska is troubling. She may not win re-election in Alaska as Governor as her favorable rating has drop to 60% from 80%.
She is a feminist and will say anything to win an election. She is a socialist and desire to collect paychecks for her family for the rest of their lives.

Please ask me a question that I can turn against Obama".

She'd better do a lot of studying for 4 years because she does not have a handle on the issues.

She'd better do a reality check on her honesty as well.

She won't even make it through the 'Primary Process', she appeals to a minority of the Republican Party. In fact, the Republican Party has been hijacked by the 'religious right' and by McCain's lack of leadership in allowing that to happen, he's lost the small "c" conservatives and the Independents.

AB   October 23rd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Ummm... okay – now she is an expert at something?

Sandy   October 23rd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

According to the American Heritage Dictionary,

feminism: n. Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

Feminists, in the true sense of the word, simply believe in equality of the sexes. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Feminist", like "liberal", has had a negative connotation because a certain section of the country decided that perhaps they did not agree with equality.

Andrew   October 23rd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Get a life.

Aron Best Sellers   October 23rd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

According to my friend, Thomas J. Aron, women have had a large role in fighting crime in Alaska history. His novel, Sour Rain, is based on his own experience in Juneau in 1967. Does having a part in breaking up a crime ring or exposing and helping disband the "good-old-boy" network make a woman a feminist? Maybe each United States of America voter should get informed and make his or her own decision.

NJHispanaAmericana   October 23rd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Yesterday McCain denied reports that he has flip-flopped, well, today on the RACHEL MADDOW Show, she rattled off exactly where he has flip-flopped (yes, I wrote them down): abortion, torture, immigration, social security, Bush tax cuts, gay marriage, campaign finance, off-short drilling, more troops to Afganistan, and finally on making Martin Luther King Day a holiday (yes, initially McCain was AGAINST making this a holiday! Enough said!! Mr. McCain are you regretting yet having chosen Karl Rove's people to manage your campaign? I could tell when they came on board, because then your ads began getting vicious. It's ironic, because they are the same people that campaigned against you in 2000. BY THE WAY, did anyone see SNL's Thursday show today? It was hilarious, the part where McCain is trying to get away from Bush.

Would she really run for president? I guess what's scarier is that a lot of people will vote for.

My headache is coming back again.--Will you please ask Sarah to define advocate, reformer, feminist, friend.-–Let me simple say Pallin is not prudent at all and McCain lives in the past.
McCain campaign and the republican party has cultivated a culture of hate and a divide that this nation has never seen before .

I am very convinced Obama will bring us back togther as one Nation

Montana Mama   October 23rd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Obama/Biden   October 23rd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Here we go, the say anything, do anything Plain. Just like Mccain! This woman couldn't put two sentences together just a few weeks ago. Now she is nstructed by her campaign as how to answer reporters. As an independent Voter, she does not represent me in any way shape or form!

To expect that she will remember something she said few weeks is too much :)

Brant, TX   October 23rd, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Palin says she is for equal rights and opportunity for women, but hasn't said she's for equal pay. Which is good considering McCain effectively voted against equal pay for women not so long ago. So she's two-thirds feminist. Way to sort-of advocate for your gender...

Govenor Palin is a "Cosmo Feminist" – Hide your agenda behind your sexy style, and then when you've snagged your man (or position) POW! Remind him that its "cheaper to keep her" and do as you please! Palin has a nasty agenda – Mc Cain had better watch his back, because if they win, he will find himself screwed before he knows it – and he won't even get a kiss.

Denise OKC   October 23rd, 2008 10:39 pm ET

I will be disappointed if anyone though she can be a good president.

John   October 23rd, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Why not look into Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright or Tony Rezko or any of these other people allied with Obama? He's running for Prez, not Palin, but the biased press wants us to know about Sarah Palin's wardrobe. Candidates usually get their designer clothes for free. Palin actually paid for her's like a regular person. Palin plans to donate her clothes to charity. What has Biden given to charity? Nothing. The media smears Sarah Palin (the very kind of woman they claim to care about) for buying clothes. Who paid for Hillary's pantsuits, Pelosi's pearls, and Biden's hair plugs? You couldn't pay off one of Tim Mahoney's mistresses for 150 grand, or Jesse Jackson's, or John Edwards' - not to mention the $80,000 Spitzer spent on hookers!

Anonymous   October 23rd, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Technically, it's not that big of a deal. Perhaps in the earlier statement she made in which she agreed she was a feminist she meant the same thing as the second statement though she refused to "label" herself. Over a month of campaigning, you just learn to choose your words more wisely I suppose...

King   October 23rd, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Why don't the interviewers ask if she is a flip-flopping two faced liar?

Because we already know the answer to that one!

guida curtis   October 23rd, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Let's not be unfair about candidates spending money slavishly. What about Obama's television ads? All the money he makes he gives it to the midia. At least Palin is donating the dresses to charity. What's Obama doing about floding the television networks here in Virginia with his tv ads? I'm about to disconnect my cable tv because all I see is Obama's face everywhere. I like the guy but I just don't know why he doesn't give some money to the poor.

That Other Jerry   October 23rd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

A woman who becomes a state governor is by definition a feminist, in the sense that she has sought and held a traditionally male job on her own, no matter whether she chooses to use the term or not. Or whether she chooses to use it some times and not others. This article is just another attempt at the inane hair-splitting that has become the norm for CNN's coverage of Palin and McCain. It serves no purpose other than fodder for the pack of jibbering baboons that attach themselves to this Ticker column and think that calling presidential candidates ridiculous names makes them look clever.

When she does decide to answer a question she can never get her facts straight or give the same answer twice. One day she a feminist the next day she isn't. Which is it? After all these months campaigning she still doesn't know what teh roll of the VP is. Why can't she get it right, even a group of third grader got it right. This women is involed in two different investigation, and there is no telling what else has yet to be discovered about her.

GOP doesn't believe in big govt but all of a sudden they want the govt to get in a very personal decision.

That is a decision between the woman her family and GOD. Government but the heck OUT!!!!

That is probably the most backward platform the GOP has.

Speider   October 23rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Good answer the first time around and then a scripted answer once the "old boy network" had corrected her.

I am amazed I now hear so much about Palin for President on 2012. She was just found guilty of abuse of power, her ideals don't match most of America and she has, although she will argue this, no training at all in governing on the scale needed to cover the diversities of the United States. The arguments against Obama are actually more apt when speaking of Palin.

Let's get over the pretty face and new, shiny exterior and realize there are better men and women ready to serve for service to this nation and not self-serving amusement and shopping sprees.

God help the people that are so narrow minded that they can't see that she is much more qualified than the so call Presidential nominee of the Democrat party Barrack Hussein Obama. What has happen to people that are so closed mind they cannot see how unqualified he is!!!!! Biden is so unqualified to be President , he can't keep his feet out of his mouth. God help us if Obama and Biden are elected. As for as Colin Powell backing Obama, what do you expect out of a person that was a failure as Secretary of State. He is just bitter old man!!!!! Mark Alfson   October 23rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Funny...she doesn't want to label herself (at least not now), but she doesn't mind labeling Americans; as in "real" Americans and those who clearly must be "non-real" or "un-real" Americans.

And the part about her having been brought up in Alaska where she was expected to do whatever the men were doing. I wonder if that worked in reverse as well? Were the men expected to do whatever the women were doing? I doubt it. So it wasn't really about equality, but about making women do even more.

With all do respect, I do not want to come off as someone who doesn't seem sympathetic of the position that Gov. Palin is in at the present moment regarding this campaign. I think that she was used because of her gender to somehow bring those 18 million Senator Clinton voters over to the Republican side of the aisle and Gov. Palin has found herself in a position of being herself instead of being who and what her Republican party thinks she should be. I feel that she is grasping at straws that are sucking away at Gov. Palins natural voice all in the name of the Republican party. I think that Gov. Palin is starting to understand that she has an two fold battle to fight; one against Sen. Obama and the second against the Right Wing Republican Party. May the best win

"What annoys a lot of Americans" is Sarah Palin. Really. I cannot wait to start seeing much, much less of her. I think I speak for many when I say this. . . Whether she is a feminist or not–well, she acts like one of the "mean girls" from where I am sitting, and I've never seen much sisterly solidarity among them. That, coupled with her obvious antifeminist positions, pretty much takes her out of the "feminist" arena, I think.

HoosierDem   October 23rd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

So let's just imagine ...GASP... for a minute (and that's far to long to my confront) she's ever in... swallowing hard!.. the White House, and she tells one world leader one thing and another something else.

How do you think McCain will grade this on the "saying what people want to hear" meter?

Debby   October 23rd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Who cares CNN do you have some kind of fetish with Palin. Your pundits constantly talk about her especially Brown. She seems to have a sick obession with her.

Marg.   October 23rd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I just watched Palin on her airplane taking to a reporter and was asked if she was a "feminist" and she stated that she was that she believed in "equal rights for women". Now she stated in an interview this past week with NBC that she was not a "feminist", and how you define a "feminist". All in all she is a phoney. She states that she is a "hockey mom", she shops at Wal+Mart, etc. What happens recently the RNC buys her $150,000 worth of designer clothes for her to wear. That would almost buy a home for the average person. The "hockey mom" does not use that amount of money to purchase clothes. I speak from experience because I am a "hockey mom", etc., and I don't spend that much on my clothes. Again, CNN and the other media are partly at fault for the description of Palin. The interview that CNN had with Palin recently was not much of an "interview". A lot of softball questions were asked of her without no followup.

Larique from CT   October 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I honestly dislike her more and more each day.
How is she for equal rights for women BUT opposes equal pay for equal work??? Makes no sense – she lacks sense.

BK   October 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Is it a surprise that a woman who 'pals around with' secessionists (like her husband) say stupid things?

snoopyloopy   October 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hmm, sounds like someone must've gone to a couple coaching sessions, amirite?

Bill Charlotte,NC   October 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Palin: "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds"

Gov. You mean like labeling people terrorist, socialist, communist, un-American, un-patriotic, real Virginia, real America, etc?" IT seems no one is better at labels than you and yes IT IS ANNOYING US!

TjayeInLA   October 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

She is not a feminist or an advocate for women. Anyone who seeks to deny women the right to choose what happens with their own body is NOT a friend of women. I doubt very seriously if women like her are in favor of forces vasectomies for men to keep women from becoming pregnant.

tomowens   October 23rd, 2008 10:02 pm ET

she will say anything, be anything to help herself. But she will label obama something new every day. Time for her to go back to alaska.

Blake   October 23rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Flipping and flopping like a flounder on a boat's deck. I'm pretty sure that a "feminist" would be pro-choice. I could be mistaken... It's happened before. She doesn't like labels? Then it would be good if she stopped labeling various parts of the country "the Real America." As far as I can tell the "Real America" is wherever she is.

Jack   October 23rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Sarah believes in the women in her universe – the universe that's only 6000 years old and she won't dare describe what that universe is like to the rest of the country.

Scary Sarah is keeping her cards close to the vest but, she has exposed enough of her beliefs to qualify as a truly flaky person.

If America wants to progress economically and in world stature, we need a new leader in Barack Obama!

SB in NoVa   October 23rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She had no problem "labeling" what she thought was "pro-america" or "anti-america" so why would she have a problem now? You are no "friend" of mine!

Obama/Biden 08 and beyond!
Turn VA Blue!!

P.S. I shook Obama's hand yesterday at the No.VA Rally. He was so authentic and real during his speech which was a combo of the "usual" stump speech and interacting with the excited and exhuberant crowd . And he even signed my books. I'm convinced now more than ever ... he will be our next Prez!

Surge   October 23rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

The feminists must be killing themselves because for generations they have had a monopoly on the definition of feminisim. It was so-called 'feminists' who were out front attacking Palin in the most disgusting ways when she first emerged. So much for the lefts' anti-hate rhetoric.

Texans for Obama   October 23rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

This is not a surprise, but I'd at least expect Palin to remember her remarks in previous interviews especially after the gaffes she's had.

I think she's just trying to keep her head above water and survive the next couple of weeks knowing that if McCain gets elected things will slow down (at least in her mind) so that she can get her much needed on the job training. She's probably also changing her feminist stance because she's thinking ahead as to what position will work best for her 2012 run.

Palin' around in Texas   October 23rd, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Somebody please help this lady back across the street to Alaska!!!

Larry   October 23rd, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Of course she changes tune on 'feminist" just like she does on a whole range of things, and just like her political mentor Sen McCain. The McCain-Palin ticket is completely bankrupt of ideas and it would be the most unfortunate thing for America if they were to win the whitehouse.

oh and if ur raped, ur not allowed to take the morning after pill in her administration and if u get pregnant expect to remain pregnant.

not even in the case of rape/incest does she believe a woman has a right to choose.

Im pro-life but her stance on womens issues go way tooooo far

Then why is Palin trying to oppress women?

She's such a moron, it's unbelievable.

The fact that the Alaskans actually voted her in means I don't ever want to go there.

And if Americans vote her in, I'm moving to Europe.

Joe   October 23rd, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Doesn't believe in labels, yeah right. She doesn't seem to have a problem insinuating that certain people are socialists.

Hypocrite.

WHAT WOMAN WOULD VOTE FOR THIS WOMAN!?

Ons   October 23rd, 2008 9:56 pm ET

If she ever understood how the economy works, she stands for Wall street while people in Main street are loosing homes through foreclosures, people working double shift-nothing wrong with working double shifts but what if that’s all you do without spending time with your family, she’s does not portray her self like though cookie Mum,
-She could be advocating for equal pays
-She could be advocating for Main street bail out or just a relieve
Maybe because Alaska pays for her kids going round even to uninvited function that might be why, Joe Biden understands more the kind of conversation that goes a round the kitchen table than she does
So Go Obama and Joe

Bulldog   October 23rd, 2008 9:56 pm ET

She labels herself as everything else so what's the problem now? She says "I'm not gonna label myself anything" but she has labeled herself as "Joe Six Pack", "maverick", "average hockey mom" and on and on. This lady is clearly lost and was thrown into a campaign way over her head. She can cry wolf as much as she wants but it is very clear she was and is not ready to be even close to a Presidential campaign. She needs to spend the next 4 years in Alaska prepping herself for 2012.

Frank, Dayton, Ohio   October 23rd, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Gov. Palin is "not willing to label" herself (at least at this sitting), but she is willing to label Barack Obama a "socialist."

kcmd34   October 23rd, 2008 9:53 pm ET

she thinks people should have equal rights, unless you're a loving gay couple who wants the same rights as their straight, married counterparts. before she gave interviews, people complained she wasn't giving interviews. now that she is giving interviews, it seems to be impossible for her to say the same thing to more than one person. she should have kept her mouth shut.

Joe The Plumber for Obama   October 23rd, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Gov. Palin, you are absolutely right, the American public is tired of political campaigns with labels. Is calling Obama a "liberal" not "labeling?"

Equal rights. How about "Pro Choice". Do women really need the vote from men to decide what happens inside her body. A bunch of crusty, and dusty old men spitting their tobacco on too bar room floors will decide if a woman has this right. Genius! If it were us (men) who got pregnant, I'd bet that we'd see this right written into the bible, forget the Supreme Court.

Mike   October 23rd, 2008 9:52 pm ET

A feminist who wants to take away my rights over my own female body.???? Explain.

MCD, San Francisco, CA   October 23rd, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Funny how she won't label herself, which is very easy for most people to do but, she has absolutely no problem telling everybody who the "Real American's" are... she has no problem labeling Obama as a "socialist" or even somebody who hangs out with Terrorists.

This woman truly scares me. I've known people like her and I can tell you right now... "It is either Her way or the Highway!" There will never be any nicities like "let's agree to disagree" and remain co-workers, friends, whatever. Her way or NO way!

Q: Gov. Palin, do you consider yourself an intellectual?

A: DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH................YA YA YA YA YA!!!

MtNebo   October 23rd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Did she forget what she said previously? If not, why has she backed away from her affirmation of being a feminist? Surely she understands the speculation that will follow? She must have a plan here that will become evident once we see the light.

Jim, NY   October 23rd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

CNN–why don't you get off it? Sarah Palin is so much more accomplished than her critics--Mayor, Governor with the highest approval rating in the U.S., Member Alaskan Energy and Conservation Board, Candidate for VP-all by the age of 44 and all while raising 5 kids. Not only that, she's gorgeous and that further kills her critics.

You can keep criticizing but she just keeps on smiling at you and moving forward. She's the big winner in the end because she has millions of adoring fans who don't care what Ticker readers say and they will reward her in many ways.

BP   October 23rd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Do you think there is any bias in the media against women? Hillary never got a fair shake. I know Obama is the greatest leader that ever was, but they need to ease off of Palin. The american people might get the wrong idea.

Jeff   October 23rd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

What about charging women for rape kits in Wasilla? How does that qualify her as feminist (per the Couric interview)?

Joel Miller   October 23rd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

She may not want to label herself "as anything". But she sure doesn't have any trouble smearing others as terrorists, un-American, rogue cops, rogue police commissioners, socialists, etc.

Jen, California   October 23rd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Palin told Couric she defines a feminist as "someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women."

ME, TOO, SARAH! EQUAL RIGHTS! YOU GO, GIRL! YOU'RE LIVING IT! I ADMIRE YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The old "feminists" - and the "drive-by media" entrenched in their PUTRID "Obama Mania" - are nothing more than a bunch of dried-up old hags, holding onto their particular version of "feminism" of the 60s and 70s.

GO McCain/Palin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - for restored sanity and honor in our great U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Zealand   October 23rd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Are people blind and stupid? This woman is incredibly laughable..

Quote:
In an interview on NBC Nightly News that aired Thursday, host Brian Williams asked Palin: "Governor, are you a feminist?"

"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," she responded. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different … I'm not going to put a label on myself. "

Go back a week or so..

Quote:
"We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation,"

You gotta hand it to Palin. She's got some gall!!!!! SHE SPENT THE ENTIRE CAMPAIGN LABELING AMERICA!!! This Northeast Liberal "Anti-American" elite (as she likes to call us) is amazed at how two-faced this woman can be.

Perla   October 23rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Ms. Palin's extremist views on abortion make her anything but a friend to women. The last thing we need is a theocrat reversing Roe v. Wade and ruling over our reproductive lives. Abortion is a complicated issue in so many ways, and each woman should be able to make her own decisions with her doctor.

Dan   October 23rd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Here we go again. This is like a BAD soap opera that we have been forced to watch till Nov-4. I had to get it over with today and voted for the folks who will move our country forward. Vote OBAMA-BIDEN.

Palin has not bought forth any NEW or BRILLIANT or even positive ideas. All she blabs from her moving lipstick are ugly, divisive and untrue statements. Attack dog- yes she is. Smart – She is not.

We have seen what happens when we are governed by people who are not Smart. BE WISE!

Chaco   October 23rd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

HAHAHAHAH – really, seriously...Palin said she doesn't like to label people, parts of the country?
So, calling Obama a terrorist pal and Greensboro NC 'real America, pro-American', calling the East Coast 'elitists'....She is a regular Dymo Label Maker!! I'm still laughing at this

(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 23rd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Palin is a pseduo-feminist. She is a woman who, in a leadership role, attempts to set female progression in America back several decades. With Palin in power, women should expect progress to halt and remain static or, worse yet, devolve.

Will the real OBAMA STAND UP   October 23rd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Why do instances such as this make headlines CNN??? You are so in the bag for OBAMA it isn't funny.

This is a much bigger issue, but hardly covered..

Did Obama change his tax plan just days before the election?
The Verdict: True.

That is an issue.. not about weather someone thinks she's a feminist.
CNN- you should be ashamed..

Lynne Kieper   October 23rd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Not only does Sarah Palin not know the job description for the position to which she aspires, she's confused even on her own positions. She becomes a bigger joke every time she is interviewed. This is certainly not someone we should consider to be next in line to be the leader of the free world, and McCain shouldn't be elected because his stunningly bad judgement in this and vicious attacks in this nasty campaign have discredited and disqualified him in the minds of many thinking voters. Obama-Biden....our only choice.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   October 23rd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Regarding the McCain supporter that SAYS she was robbed and had the 'B' cut into her face – some reporters need to investigate because the 'B' was cut backwards – like you do when you do it to yourself in a MIRROR! What a scam! I hope they find out the truth and charge that girl with making a false report.

GOOD LUCK SARAH PALIN AND JOHN MCCAIN

Maria   October 23rd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

So in other words, Sarah, just like always, you don't know what the Hell you are talking about!

You can't correctly explain what the duties are of Vice President of the United States, the position you're running for, and you can't even explain your own views on issues in the world with any sort of consistency. I know that McCain was trying to appeal to all the women who wanted Hillary Clinton, but this is to the point where it is really sad......

Obama/Biden 2008

She is an insult to American women.

That's interesting. She's certainly willing to throw every label at Obama quite easily. And as far as labeling different parts of America "different" isn't she also the one who was so happy to be in the "pro America" part of the country? Here's a label that suits her well: hypocrite.

Palin the feminist   October 23rd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Maybe Brian Williams should have asked her if she was a moron...she would have answered yes to that one....you betcha!

Donna   October 23rd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Lol..I guess McCain TOLD her the appropriate answer after the Couric interview...

Brian MacDougall   October 23rd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Oh, my Lord. Did she really say, "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different..."?

Governor, isn't that EXACTLY what you've been doing lately? Putting labels on "real America," and "real Americans"?

What a ninny!

Michael Moore said it best on Larry King....weather you are a Repub or Dem, do you really want to give someone the keys to the White House after only knowing them seven weeks? I mean come on.....at least Obama has been in teh "spotlight" for 4 years....

She changes her mind on issues like she changes shoes....

Just wondering......do her children go to scholl or are they schooled on the road? And if they are schooled on the road who is paying for that? At least Obama's kids are going to their regular school!

Obama in Oregon   October 23rd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

first McCain says Obama will say anything to get elected and now Palin, the self-described hockey-mom-maverick-pitbull doesn't think she should be labeling herself or different (pro-american) parts of the country? these republican hypocrites need to get their stories straight. get real.
