Sen. Obama waved before boarding his campaign plane Thursday after an event in Indiana.

(CNN) – As Election Day inches closer, Barack Obama continues to hold a significant lead over John McCain, according to CNN's average of several recent polls.

The Illinois senator now holds an 8-point lead over McCain in the latest CNN poll of polls, 50 percent to 42 percent. That lead is 1 point lager than it was in Wednesday's poll of polls.

The national general election poll of polls consists of four recent surveys: Fox/Opinion Dynamics (October 20-21), Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby (October 20-22), Gallup (October 20-22) and Diageo/Hotline (October 20-22). The Poll of Polls does not have a sampling error.

Bob   October 23rd, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Im sick of democrats always putting McCain down. You want to say that he can't pick a VP so how is he going to be president? Well Obama can't choose between yes and no when it comes to voting on a bill. In fact he voted present over 100 times. How can the president be someone that can't choose between a box checked yes and a box checked no? So much for his Ivy League education

Ahead because all McBush and Moose Bush have are the same tired negative lies over and over again. Bill Ayers, so what, Ayers and Obama were both invited by a major Republican to sit on a charity board. Yawn. Oh ACORN ! Yes the Government sponsored voter registration group that McCain gave a speech to in 2006 and praised them for their wonderfull work. But Socialsm ! Yeah Right. Bush has Nationalized the Banks and McCain wants the Government to own our home mortgages. That is more Communist than China is. Well Joe the Plumber says….. Samuel (Joe) the Plumber lied and said he was going to buy a Company that makes Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars a year. The Company makes nowhere near that much. "Joe" is a liar and a political gimmick for McBush. Enough already !

Sunshine   October 23rd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

McCain is in deep sh@t! I just came from early voting in the state of Indiana & one of the poll workers I know said about 75% of the people who came there voted Obama.I admit I do live in a small town of only 200,000 but if this has happened in a small town McCain can hang it up.

I bet Obama takes NC and GA. There is no way McSame can win if he does not get atleast 270 electoral votes. He is still almost 100 down. Obama already has enough to win.

Voter   October 23rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Don't trust polls, they're often wrong. Polls said Kerry would win in 2004.

You can't say how an entire country will vote based on a tiny sample. It's simply impossible.

A lot of people might be very surprised at the actual results.

Hello!!   October 23rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

How many of the polls have been accurate in the last several general elections...none....

tomagoose   October 23rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Don't believe these polls, election night will be a nail biter. Obama will NOT win by a landslide, he will squeak by or alternatively it will be too close to call and McCain will cry foul due to ACORN and then whose the hanging chad then and we will have eight more weeks of uncertainty and the market will tank!

Patric, PHX,AZ   October 23rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

I am sooo sick of hearing Barack Obama doesn't have a birth certificate, I went and looked it up, its all over the internet. Also am very tired of being told he is a muslim. McCain and Palin have no real plans, they have been to busy being nasty to develop a plan, at least not one that makes any sense to me. I am tired of corporate give aways and tax breaks for the rich. Time for a change. Lets do it.

I live in a small city in Maine and all I see are McCain?Palin signs everywhere. Maybe one or two Obama. Of course the CNN polls will show Obama ahead – they poll more Dems than Repubs. It is not an accurate poll.

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 23rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

In a five minute span, we learn that

John McCain's brother is calling 911 to complain about the traffic,
Scott McClellan is backing Obama, and
John McCain won't be attending his own election night party (he'll talk to a few people on the lawn of the hotel).

This 8 point lead is not the disease for McCain, it's just a symptom.

Committing treason as a POW does not make you a war hero. It makes you a Benedict Arnold. Abandoning your children does not make you a good man. Voting against veterans benefits does not make you patriotic. And making 95% of the people suffer while you give welfare checks to the 5% that don't need it does not make a good policy. And spending $150k to clothe your lipstick wearing pitbull does not make you an animal lover nor an advocate for women!

I'll take the guy that doesn't have a record of failure....I'll take Obama any day!

AP released its poll yesterday, and the race was a DEAD HEAT! Now, I'm not saying that it's right, but it's kind of odd that all these other polls have Obama ahead by 4, 5, or more points and the AP is even. Maybe it says something about who the different polls survey.....

They've stolen two presidential elections and they can steal another one.

A Woman In California For Obama or Shirley the Legal Secretary   October 23rd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

The McCain campaign is a joke. If Palin was so gifted-why is it they had to take this hillbilly and buy her $150,000 of new clothes, makeup and hold her hands? All the money they've spent on her and she still doesn't deliver. Remember how she dressed in Alaska? She looked like an older version of Daisy Duke. My goodness-she is a joke! Bay Buchanan can try all she wants to impress me Palin is doing a great job. Guess what, I'm not impressed and my vote still goes to Obama/Biden. The real and only choice.

Just about everyone I speak to is planning an election party on the 4th to wish Obama luck and spread some karma. People who support him are optimistic but cautious because of the last 2 presidential elections. we (Obama supporters) do not underestimate the RNC ability to steal elections. The only difference this year is Jeb Bush is not the Gov. of Florida but Bushies are all over the nation.

pam Eugene OR   October 23rd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Obama thanks you Senator McCain for all the crap you are throwing! I just sent him another $100.
I will max out my $2300 on or about the 1st of November.
For every lie you tell, for every time you incite hate, for every false accusation you make and for every robo call you instigate Barack gets more money. See how that works John. Isn't it great!
Stop the lies: Vote Obama and vote early!

Aaron   October 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Mccain can't pick a VP how's he supposed to be a President?

conservative   October 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Polls ; worthless propaganda tools!

Tyne, MD   October 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

We are standing in the shadows of history. On November 4th the country will overwhelmingly tell George W. Bush and his ilk that we REJECT and DENOUNCE his presidency. We think he did a terrible job, and we want a new president with new leadership. He and John McSame can ride off in the sunset and let others deal with the chaos and confusion that they are leaving us.

Mccain can pick a VP how's he supposed to be President?

Charles Jameson   October 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

It's not over till it's over. People are planning victory parties, rehearsing victory songs and going off into la-la land. There is still a battle on the ground for hearts and minds. To take the banner of fiscal conservatism and limited government away from the Republicans. To ensure a foreign policy and trade environment that enables American peace and prosperity and global progress. Many battle grounds are still close and our objective at the moment should be not just to win, but to win with a mandate.

Amy   October 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Keep it up Barack!

My fellow voters, we cannot let media reports of huge turnouts distract us. It's extremely important that every vote be cast! We do not want a repeat of 2000 when the media very well may have affected the outcome of the election by prematurely calling Florida.

Lisa   October 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Wow McCain is trying to connect Obama with BUSH. First he was dangerous, doesn't look like us, Socialist, Terrorist....Now he's BUSH!

limbo   October 23rd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

I love it. He tried, tested and true. We have seen him run a great campaign. McCain just hasn't been tested like he thought. This is politics as usual. Obama brings a new way of politics with him. Yes we can!

sabuc for Obama   October 23rd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Don't pay attention to the polls. GO VOTE EARLY and encourage anybody you know to do the same!!! Then sit back and enjoy the early announcement come Nov 4th!!

katiec   October 23rd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Obama supporters. Please keep in mind that we cannot put
too much substance in the poll numbers. We must continue
to do all we can to get Barack Obama elected. With the
dirty tricks the republicans are trying to pull to suppress
our votes, we need a big victory, so regardless, they
cannot steal the election, again.

Max Pargament   October 23rd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

God can we please relax with these poll numbers. We know its the medias job to keep this a close race, but every week we see Mccain gaining on obama or obama gaining a bigger lead. Obama's been ahead by roughly the same amount each time they report this story!

I want to know who they call for these polls? How many undecided, flip floppers are there? If you really haven't made up your mind about this election, (whether its democrat, republican, or 3rd party), then they should make a law so that people like you can't vote. Mccain and obama (at least they say they are, and lets hope they really are) greatly differ on issues, if you're undecided about either, your views really aren't that informed are they? Global warming, war, etc...are your opinions really that soft on them?

Cathy   October 23rd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

This number needs to keep increasing until the election day. I can't wait to say "President Obama."

Charley Lanter   October 23rd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Lets go McCain keep fighting pull ahead you can do it!!!
NOOBAMA!!

Mable, IN   October 23rd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Barack was the cutest little boy in his family album. He looked as if he was a handful. His mother did a great job, and America will be happy to have him as the next POTUS.

Obama/Biden 08

Lisa   October 23rd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

So Funny!
I just saw a CNN news report that said John McCain is now trying to say that Obama is just like BUSH! OMG! Maybe this one will stick?!!

Scott L   October 23rd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Breaking News! – Attack on McCain campaign volunteer in Pittsburgh – "The robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said."

WHY IS CNN NOT COVERING THIS STORY??

Tia, Miami, FL   October 23rd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Barack is a good man and I hope his grandmother is alright. She raised a daughter who was intelligent and kind, and the same goes for Barack. I like him and his family and I know he will be good for the country.

Godspeed Barack and hurry back on the campaign trail.

I hope Obama's grandmother recovers. Hopefully the McCain will tone down the rheotric while Obama is visting his grandma.

Chi4Obama   October 23rd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

I hope this means that I only have to endure Grandpy McSane, and his Whiney pitbull for only 12 more days?

Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if the GOP pulled a rabbit out of their (hind parts), to steal another election.

Rick   October 23rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

"Netherlands blogger Michael van der Galien reports that a group of young Dutch Socialists will be flying here to campaign for Barack Obama:
They would travel to the United States to campaign for Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for the presidency.
In fact, one of the demands of potential applicants is that they need to have a “great affinity with the Democratic Party and Barack Obama.”

True story. Enough said.

payback   October 23rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I hope what is being reported, is the case. But I'am afraid, that the republicans are planning on stealing this election................

values   October 23rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

LETS GET BUSY.

VOTE OBAMA NOV 4TH.

Cathy Agu   October 23rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

America needs a steady warm fresh cool and hard Obama. Well done the Obama TEAM.

Thanks But No Thanks   October 23rd, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Of course he's in the lead because Barack is the better man. America knows when someone is trying to pull the wool over their eyes, and it won't work. John has been campaigning all his life and he's feeding us the same lines that got him into office for 20 years. It won't work. He may make an okay senator for Arizona, but he doesn't have the temperament to run the country.

A man that mean spirited should never be near the nuclear code. He's vindictive and Sarah is just as bad. No, these cartoon characters should go back to to the two A's – Alaska and Arizona. One place is in the desert and the other is in ice country. Secluded places where no one cares how mean they are.

dEMOBRAT   October 23rd, 2008 6:02 pm ET

DON'T LET THE MEDIA PICK YOUR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chi4Obama   October 23rd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Folks,
I think we are witnessing the sinking of the McCain-Palin ticket right before our eyes. They are going down faster than the Titanic.

Even members of the GOP can see the writing on the wall.

Filipina   October 23rd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

President Obama,,,,keeping you and your Grandma in my thoughts and prayers.

EBJ in Texas   October 23rd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

I wonder if the McCain campaign has noticed that every time they try to stick a label on Sen Obama, he just keeps rising in the polls. Unless these polls are total hogwash, and sometimes they ARE, people seem to be tiring of the Rove type politics of fear, division, and seperation the same type that won them the White House the past two elections. And the more Gov Palin opens her mouth the LOWER her ratings go. Maybe they will figure this out but it may be too late.

That's what i'm talking about.   October 23rd, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Bset news i've heard in eight years.

Jeff in Illinois   October 23rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Obama's lead is more than significant at this point. Moreover, polls do not reflect the effect of voter turnout. Most are expecting a much higher level of actual voter turnout among those voting for Obama. I wouldn't be surprised to see closer to a 60/40 popular vote win for Barack.

51% = "Mandate"

60+% = ?!?!?!

frankie   October 23rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

When the election is finally over and Obama is our president, then I can relax. I don't trust polls, they can be misleading.

tanyia   October 23rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Can you say President Obama.

Kimberly in Azizona   October 23rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

When will mccain stop all the hate and fear based attacks and try to bring the right wing fringe of his supporters together and say, Obama may not be your ideal pick, but he is NOT scary he is NOT a terrorist, he is not going to tax everybody to death, and he is going to be a good president. He is tearing this country apart EXACTLY like bush did and its NOT a very American thing to do. He needs to stop this and he needs to do it NOW. He knows its over, but yet has turned up the hate and fear crap. Its shameful!

Chris   October 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

I hope that the polls are right, the only poll we need now is the Nov. 4th poll because between now and Nov. any thing can hapen.

Irma in North Carolina   October 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

I knew Obama would gain after Sarah said Obama will invite danger if elected. Man on Saturday he ought to gain a bunch after the Mccain camps sends out those other thugs to campaign for them.

Tim   October 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Good news, but we will not let up. In the words of a famous coach, It's the 4th quarter and even though he have the lead, we are going to give the other team 40 minutes of pure hell. We are going to do this by getting as many to vote early and some, like myself are taking a day of vacation from work to drive people to the polls on November 4th!!!! We are fired up and ready to go!!!!

Obama/Biden 08!!!!

Bob in Tenn   October 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Good News, we can't stand a third Bush administration.

Aliou salam   October 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

McAin Robbot calls and lies turned me off. I have no respect for the man.

Jack   October 23rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Obama should be ahead by more than that if the voters will listen to what each of the candidates are saying.

John McCain is promising more of the same Bush economic policy but, he says he'll get a different result from those same policies – I think that's insane.

Aliou salam   October 23rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Jackson 5, Madona, Oprah and Angelina Jolie, To campaign for OBAMA

Shay   October 23rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Go Bama Go Bama Go Obama you are the man. I vote I vote I vote now everyone else should to make the point higher higher higher.

Obama you have my vote in the bank.

Bob   October 23rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

This may be the truth, and it may be slightly skewed rhetoric. It doesn't matter, I've cast my vote for my beliefs. I don't care who you vote for, just get out and vote. Wake up, America! No more apathetic responses to who elects our leaders!!

jfs Memhis, Tn   October 23rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Lets hope that by next week at this time its 12-15.
