Biden questioned the McCain campaign's likening of Obama to President Bush.
Biden questioned the McCain campaign's likening of Obama to President Bush.

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (CNN) – Joe Biden laughed off John McCain’s Thursday statement that Barack Obama is “doubling down” on President George Bush’s economic policies, saying “This is as crazy as Butch Cassidy attacking the Sundance Kid!”

“Yesterday, literally, John McCain actually went so far as to try to compare Barack Obama to George W. Bush,” said Biden to supporters at an outdoor rally in the streets of West Virginia’s capital.

“John McCain is now attacking the Bush budget and Bush fiscal policies, which he voted for I might add. But folks, this is as crazy as, you know, Butch Cassidy attacking the Sundance Kid! I mean that’s a team! These guys have been a team.

“I know Halloween is coming,” he went on to say. “but John McCain as a candidate of change? Whoa, come on! John McCain and change? He needs a costume for that, folks, The American people aren't going to buy this.”

In the middle of coal country, Biden called for an additional $200 million in coal sequestration research and accused McCain of not wholeheartedly supporting clean coal, pointing to comments McCain made to the Sierra Club in 2000 when he said, “in a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely.” The McCain camp has leveled the same charge at the Delaware senator.

“Let me get something straight because you watch these McCain ads, you wonder what planet are they coming from, John McCain does not believe that clean coal is part of our future. Don't take my word for it. Take his word for it,” said Biden, reading the quote.

“So John, if you're listening. Stop this malarkey about who's for clean coal,” he added. Make no mistake about it. The oil companies have placed their bets on Sarah Palin and John McCain, not on Barack Obama and Joe Biden. That's why Appalachia can't afford to go with McCain and must go with Obama.”

The McCain camp shot back, again arguing that Obama and Biden are against coal, pointing to video of Biden in Ohio telling an environmentalist, “We're not supporting 'clean coal.’”

“Barack Obama and his running mate are against coal, against off-shore drilling, and against nuclear energy,” wrote McCain spokesman Ben Porritt. “These plans would not only kill jobs in America - they would destroy the nucleus of West Virginia’s economy."

Attending Biden’s rally Friday was Chaylee Cole, the former employee of a public relations firm that was hired by the RNC to make calls to voters and read statements attacking Obama. She quit instead.
“She said she would not do it. And they fired her,” said Biden. “She said, ‘Democrat or Republican I wouldn't have done this.’ End of quote. Ladies and gentlemen, Chaylee recognized that regardless of your personal politics, attacks like that, attacks like that are out of bounds.”

Biden was introduced by 90 year-old ailing Senator Robert Byrd, who read his remarks from a lowered lecturn while seated in a wheelchair. At the end of his speech, Biden paid tribute to the longtime senator from West Virginia, “to learn the ways of the Senate from Bob Byrd is like getting a trumpet lesson from the Angel Gabriel.”

ITs funny how the GOP keep talking about the liberal media. I'd like to ask O'reilly if he thinks Courisc was harder on Palin thn Bill was on Obama. If the media was as liberal as the gop says how come we are stil hearing about Ayers and Wright, But nothing about Keating5, G. Goron Liddy, TThomas Mutthee, and the ALP. Plus more on the fact that Mccain spoke at an ACORN rally in 2006. If the media were aas liberal as they claim, someone other than David Letterman would have called MCCain out on Liddy.

John McCain hasn't offered any reasonable plan to fix the economy except tax cuts for billionaires and his campaign doesn't have any strategy, but spreading lies. Barack Obama is smart and educated and he has conducted the most well organized campaign I've ever seen.

None of us have ever voted before except for my Mom. I know of at least 100 new voters for Barack Obama. My uncle is 45 years old and he has never voted before and he was so happy with casting his vote for Barack Obama because he believes like I do, that Barack Obama will make a difference and we all will be better off because of it. Vote for Barack Obama 08 and 2012

Bush and chaney already went down there and voted for Mcain, afterall, they continue to wish that Macain will be able to continue thier failed economic and foreign policies failures of eight years.

But God bless America, America will change November 4 and there will come in President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. No more Bush, No more Chaney and no Macain, no, definitely no palin.

AZ4O   October 24th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Joe McCain, Johns' brother is an idiot. And the Ashley Todd girl is the type of girl am sure will say anything to get noticed. I don't think anybody told her to do what she did, but people like that has caused a lot black folks to go to jail or just arrested. Yeah...the imfamous .. young african american, about 6 feet tall, black cloths and shiny shoes always make the news. The description of any black suspect.

Am very optimistic about Obama winning. And he will by a huge margin.

What will he change? He'll change the name of the President. As long as it's not McCain, which is a change for the worse, then we're on the right path.

Honestly, as bad as Bush is...John would be worse, his policies go even further to the stupid side of insanity then Bush's.

I can only think of a few things that Johnny would change: Less veterans benefits, a free house for everyone, 4 new wars, and taking away even more of our freedoms, oh....and annexing Alaska as a new country, because he endorses secessionism.

This woman is unhinged and was pointed in the direction she took by the words of your candidates. Take some personal responsibility for your words and actions.
Vote McCain, vote for hate.
Vote Obama for peace and prosperity.

Joe   October 24th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

My friends, when John McCain picked Sarah Palin it was all about campaign first, not country first. And now it backfired.
My friends, John McCain is running a very, very negative campaign, something he said he would not do. Hypocrite !
My friends, Sarah Palin is totally not qualified to be VP and John McCain knows it.
My friends, John McCain seems to have this idea that he is entitled to being President, just like Hillary Clinton.
My friends, Barack Obama has run a much better, positive, honest campaign and he will get my vote.

tulsa   October 24th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

From the "McCain worker attacked" thread,

No, McCain DID have a direct connection to her actions.

By telling his crowds to be angry, by telling them they need to be afraid of Senator Obama, by inciting racial hatred and linking Obama to terrorists. What is an unstable, "true believer" in McCain supposed to do?
Yes, I'm afraid McCain and Palin ARE culpable for at the very least sowing the seeds of her actions.

Seattle Sue   October 24th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Mr. Biden, you are too kind to McCain/Bush in your remarks.

Infact she did that to herself and she screwed up so bad, that she carved the letter B on her face ...but it shows backwards..meaning she did it to herself. Finally she admits and I think this women needs to be punished.
Looks like she took direct orders from the McCain or Sarah to come up with this stunt. We have to wait and see how many more such stunts until election day
Looks like McCain's brain is mutilated.. he cant fight like a real man. He needs women to fight for him. If any shame and respect left in Republicans..vote for OBAMA

Four more years of economic misery? Yeah right, after your cowboy hero from Texas (you know, the other one with the 'big ears') took this nation on a trainwreck for the last 8 years, ANY change has gotta be better than that.

And what exactly does your red ticket have to offer, hmm? No clear policies, no plan for economic recovery. Just lies, smears, and fear tactics from a 72 year old multi millionare geriatric and an airhead beauty queen puppet.

I do love Biden, for his wisdom and handiness with language.
Just remember the galloping economy we had under Clinton and his taxation policies, as against the hard times with Bush 41 and Reagan. It is hard for me to be deluded that the respective taxation policies don't have a direct influence on my economic position, and I see my position reflected in the country's economic fortunes too. It is not what they say about these policies it is what the polices do for us in our time. If you look at the graph of job growth you will also see it is almost a cartoon, dems in the WH jobs rise, repubs in the WH the curve falls below the steady state line and it is always this way since before Hoover.

milo   October 24th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

"JOHN MC CAIN AIN'T NO GEORGE BUSH IF YOU WANT TO RUN AGAINST HIM YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT 4 YEARS AGO"

That line would only mean something if McCain wasn't proposing all the same policies as Bush. Yeah, disagreeing 10% of the time is WAY different.

"I LIKE THE WAY YOU VOTED FOR THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE NOT ONCE BUT TWICE"

People are still bringing that up? PALIN supported it before she flipflopped on it. Really, you don't want to bring up earmarks and wasteful spending when Alaska has some of the highest per capita. Talk about "spreading the wealth" from the lower 48 up to alaska.

John   October 24th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

McCain is desperate, the kind of politician that would lead our USA into a third world spectacle. I would suggest Americans use the Internet and review McCain's biography to see who he really is. I've found him to be a shallow, unintelligent man who only gained his seat in the Senate from his new father-in-law. There's a lot more trash in McCain's life's story that should be a concern to the American voter. How he treats his own family is what America should learn.

McCain/Palin should give it up. They have been changing their campaign strategy (if you could even call it that), on a daily basis. This kind of flip flopping is not what the country needs during this time of economic turmoil.

Obama and Biden have shown a consistent and steady hand during these tough days. They have stuck to the issues and limited their negativity primarily to policy issues NOT character. There is only one choice on Nov. 4

More of Biden's BS. If he wants to take someone's word for it, let's hold him accountable for saying that Obama does not have the experience to be president and the coumtry does not need someone that requires on the job training. Did he forget making that statement when he was running for president? They are all liars and anyone that doesn't think so believes wrestling on tv is real! I actually met someone that believes everyone will get health insurance if Obama wins. The fact is, it is available to everyone now, you just have to pay for it, which is exactly what you will have to do regardless of who wins. Then Biden goes on making another suggestion that we cough up another $200 million. I hope he is willing to cough up his nice little pension and salary, as those of us who work for a living cannot afford another dime! Bottom line, Biden is a typical politician.

Wow, you guys have a tough economic turn, and you decide to just throw in the towel for Capitalism give into the Change mantra a go to the extreme left agenda, of high taxes and even higher growth in government.

Well don't cry to me when you get a heavy dose of Barack (big earred guy that was born in Kenya and by fact should not be allowed to be President according to the founding father's election rules), Nancy and Harry for four years.

After four years with these clowns, you will wish you never heard the word change mantra as it will mean nothing more than four years of economic misery from Mr. Do nothing at the wheel.

M. WINNERS   October 24th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Hey Rick...
Please, just come out of the closet and admit you can't vote for a person of color.
Don't mock the Obama supporters just becausee you're a quiet racist or bigot. This is the "USA-USA-USA" as the prepug moronic chant goes so you can be anything you want even a racist or a bigot. Stand up, be proud...

Ann   October 24th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

The McCain/Palin campaign tries to convince the American people that Obama is a socialist. They portray themselves as religious people. However, there is a quote in the bible that says, " He that is defrauding the lowly one to supply many things to himself, he also that is giving to the rich one, is surely destined for want". Kind of fits the McCain/ Palin plan to give tax cuts to large corporations, making the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Go Obama!!!

Matt: honestly   October 24th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Wait a second dennis from AKRON. I do believe McCain did vote with Bush 90% of the time. So while he is not physically Bush, his policies are. Also I really think you don't want to go after the bridge to Nowhere, because Palin was for it before she was against it. And once she was against it she kept the money even though it wasn't being built! Research before you attack! Typical McCain supporter, all blind attacks.

Tonya   October 24th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

What's next? McCain accuses Obama of being a hot headed old white guy?

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   October 24th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

While thinking that repairing the Bush tax cuts, in essence restoring the tax rates back to the levels of the good ole Clinton days, is a bad idea by Obama, it is PRECISELY the same position McCain argued when they were first enacted. Is his memory so poor that he cannot remember saying the Bush tax plan was "skewed" to benefit the rich in 2001 and 2003?
But, he then decided he was going to run again, and he changed his tune. So ever since 2004, he's been riding on the Bush bandwagon about 85-90% of the time.
AND, most importantly, he's now trumpeting, basically, the same economic platform that Bush pushed thru a Republican-led Congress to the tune of a 20%+ drop in wealth over an 8 year period.

I don't know about you, but if I'm hiring someone for a job, I don't go back to the same firm (Republicans) that has caused my entity to lose 20% in value, especially when their resume says
"I'm a deregulator at heart", "the Fundamentals of the economy are strong" and "the Bush policies have been good."

Rich people who can spend on $150, 000 on clothing like Palin, of course, are able to raise and support disabled child(ren) even for life.

Does she ever consider people whom she called "Joe six-packed" who live day to day?

Note that I have nothing against these children. It should be the choice of the parents. If they decided to bring these children to the world, make sure, they provide sufficient love and nurture them properly and this may require lots of finances. If they can't, then make the necessary decision(s).

mike   October 24th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Obama supporters- why all the name calling, derogatory nicknames , hate and outright lies that we see in these blogs. And all the while blaming President Bush, Senator McCain and Governor Palin of the same things. Is it only OK when Democrats do it? Who are the real hypocrits?

Ordinary Voter   October 24th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Biden is lucky the press believes that it is always "Joe being Joe". He is going to be just like Cheney....after the election, he will add nothing to the Democratic's party future, In four years, at close to 70 years old, he will become an albatross around Obama's neck. In eight years, he will be 73 years old and not a very viable candidate for the Dems and the Republicans will be coming out of the wilderness with a stronger party. Joe should just be Joe while he has the opportunity in the next couple of weeks.

Clean coal is a great idea if we are going to convert existing factories to reduce pollutants. But overall, there needs to be energy incentives to create jobs that research renewable energies.

The Republicans would call this killing jobs in the coal industry, but I would argue that it's creating jobs in a new industry, and overall, beneficial for our environment, and reducing our dependence on oil.

Charm   October 24th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Debating democrats on this blog is like arguing with 10 year olds. All of your childish "McSame's" and "McBush" and your "McWhatever's". Geez, you're a bunch of airheads. You repeat everything that the dem party throws out. There is absolutely no original thinking from you people. Obama has a voting record(on those rare instances when he actually did vote) that completely defies what he is saying in the campaign. Wake up. Do some research. It's not what he says now that counts, it's what he has acually done in the past.

Man, we sorely need a competency test before we allow people to vote.

Independent white female patriotic voter   October 24th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Mccain will say anything that makes him look better. Lies and all, whatever it takes. He voted 90% of the time with Bush and now he goes out on the stump claiming Bush was a bad preseident. Well, he is right, Bush was bad for our economy and our standing in the world and Mccain will be no different, just more of the same.

John McCain joined Wolf Blitzer for an interview on CNN. During the interview he said he was sick and tired of the pork barrel spending. I was completely amused by what he said next. I quote, "Instead of bridges to nowhere and projectors and planetariums such as Sen. Obama asked for". Someone should really tell him that it was his own VP pick, Sarah Palin who asked for funding for the bridge to nowhere. Imagine him as president if he can't remember a simple thing as that.

I have no use for your kind Joe Biden. It's like you made a deal with the devil and sold your soul.

Lyle   October 24th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Once again Mr. Biden is trying to hide the truth and his own words under an avalanche of blathering.

Mr. Biden clearly stated to a reporter in September of he and Mr. Obama…"We’re not supporting clean coal” and that they want …"No coal plants here in America". These statements are on tape but of course Mr. Biden has a penchant for pandering to his audience of the moment. As for off-shore drilling and nuclear power, Mr. Obama has been clear that he opposes any meaningful use of these important resources.

So, blather on Mr. Biden, your position and words may change from moment to moment, but the facts don’t.

It amazes me that the GOP comments on these blogs never have the person real name. It must have something to with the fear the right has against everyone that looks and thinks different. Well KC, you can tell your friends that having an intelligent person in the White house does not welcome the imaginary evil doers around the world to come out of there caves and throw rocks at the most powerful country in the world. What get them out of there caves is when you elect people like mccain & palin who have no clue how to lead a nation much less the world follow the bush polices of occupying and bombing other countries for no reason. World hates the US because idiots like you that are not educated in world affairs but talk like you can see the future. Coal is key to the future, but more needs to be done to keep it clean. There are some very bright ideas, and Obama wants to invest in the good ideas to make America independent of imported oil. To free us from the economic drain so that we can creat more jobs in the energy sector.

you too can buy an election   October 24th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Obama is buying the Whitehouse and it is sick…

The only reason that 95% + of people benifit from Obama's plan is because over 35% do not pay taxes and will get a free check for doing nothing. So he is in essence buying the presidency by getting all these people to vote in order to get the free money.

It is a smart winning strategy, however it is not right and I am shocked not 1 person in the media is calling him out on it (that I have heard of anyway)

At this point in the presidential candidates and their supporters are throwing everything at each other, including the kitchen sink, is it really true that Joe Biden has a problem of imbibing the spirits? That's what a well-known anochor said yesterday. Maybe that accounts for his totally off-the-wall comments he's been making that has incensed his running mate, Barack Obama. This needs to be clarified.

Bush and McCain are so much alike. Not only does McCain reinforce Bush's policiesthat have crumbled our society....McCain even uses Bush's campaign strategies. McCain said in 2000 that Bush was using hatecalls to smear him and that they were a dishonorable tactic to use when campaigning, but low and behold he has hired Bush's people that smeared him in 2000 to help him do the same to Obama. This time America won't fall for fear- mongering. We've learned our lesson. McCain is more of the same and I for one am not about to send my son into another Maverick's war. Get out and VOTE early. I'm a typical white woman and I approve this message.

HUFFINGTON POST   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

So CNN, we all noticed how eager you guys were to print the story about the McCain campaign volunteer that was supposedly attacked by black man that carved the letter "B" on her face. Then why not so eager to cover the story now that she has admitted to making the whole thing up to try to race bait the election in favor of McCain? McCain & Palin have actually spoken with this pathetic, degenerate, racist, lying, ignorant stupid girl about this story??? So are they going to call her back and accuse her of lying to them now??? McCain & Palin are seriously the two most pathetic human beings in politics in the history of politics. Their little political theatre parlor tricks, ranging from Joe the plumber to Ashley Todd the "I lie about getting attacked by a black man because I'm a degenrate lying little pathetic twirp" are a true metaphor for McCain's entire campaign: Race bate, lie, decieve, manipulate, & lie again.

Charlie Bradley   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

John McCain is so out of it he couldn't even change a dollar let alone a country.

Shay   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

McCain camp should learn from long time mistakes. Republicans should get a life, a plan and fire their campaign. McCain should send Palin back to Moose Country and that will be the end of the RNC campaign. Hehe

THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER---PLEASE MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

GIVE'EM HELL JOE! I LOVE JOE BIDEN. He's right, halloween is coming early in the McCain camp. We are not buying and I already voted for Obama / Biden and every Democrat on the ticket. I want change and want it now.

My stocks are down from 60K to 10K.. what a hit.... this is insane...

Tim   October 24th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Chaylee Cole is an honorable woman!!!! She needs to be mentioned and praised at every opportunity!!!!

Amy   October 24th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

The McCain campaign is ignoring policies Obama discussed during the debates which millions of people saw.

What do you think the American people are going to believe: a McCain attack at a rally/in a commercial or policy discussed in a debate?

TAINOPOWER   October 24th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Obama and tbe DNC “ADMITTED”, by way of failure to timely respond to Requests for Admissions, all of the numerous specific requests in the Federal lawsuit. Obama is “NOT QUALIFIED” to be President and therefore Obama must immediately withdraw his candidacy for President and the DNC shall substitute a qualified candidate. The case is Berg v. Obama, No. 08-cv-04083.

Clean Coal Technology is available, as is newer, safer nuclear technology. We also have an abundance (in the Southwest) of wind, solar, and geothermal technologies. All of them need to be embraced if we are ever to wean ourselves from dependence upon foreign oil. This should be a Non-Partisan No-Brainer.

OBAMA 08

Noah   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

McCain has been the single biggest thorn in Bush's side for the past 8 years. Barack Obama also voted for Bush's budget the last 2 times! What a lie this guy has been. He is convincing some uninformed people that he is not who his record says he is!

McCain Volunteer Who Claimed "Carved B" Attack Confesses To Making Up Story

“Barack Obama and his running mate are against coal, against off-shore drilling, and against nuclear energy,” wrote McCain spokesman Ben Porritt.

You'll find that it is an OUTRIGHT LIE.

"Attending Biden’s rally Friday was Chaylee Cole, the former employee of a public relations firm that was hired by the RNC to make calls to voters and read statements attacking Obama.

I gotta say, pretty good, pretty good....

Geo Joe in ABQ   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I like Chaylee the ex-telemarketer. Sounds like a real person, not like that chump "Joe" who now seems to be writing McPalin's speeches. An RNC attack so vile even a telemarketer wouldn't read it. Now that's low...

That Woman Who Quit Her Job Instead Of Spreading Lies About Obama Kept Her Self Respect! Many Republicans Could Learn From Her!

Obama is a smooth talking car salesman   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Joe- Your rhetoric is about as moronic as you are. Stick to the silent treatment. That is the best for you. How's the senatorial campaign doing for ya?? Nice job done on Delaware..

Country first   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

When you go out there to vote you better pay good attention and double check your vote before you summit it. In some state if not all the republicans fix the machine up. If you vote straight democratic they fix the machine so your presidential vote go for McCain instead of Barack. So you might think you vote for Barack and the machine was fix and it goes the other way. So pay good attention to make sure your presidential vote goes to your choosing candidate. These are disgusting tactics that the republicans are using right now in some part of Texas and may be nationwide. We need fair and free election so rigging these machines is nothing but disgusting tactics. Also when you go to the polling place no political T-shirt because they will turn you away.
