Tom Ridge thinks that McCain's campaign in PA would have different with him on the ticket.

UPDATED with Ridge statement about the comments
(CNN) – John McCain’s campaign says the narrowing path to victory this fall runs straight through Pennsylvania, where he trails Barack Obama by double digits in the most recent CNN poll of polls. Now the state’s former governor says that if he were on the Republican ticket, the road to the White House might have been a less bumpy one.

"I think the dynamics would be different in Pennsylvania," Tom Ridge, the McCain campaign’s national co-chairman, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in an interview published Friday. "I think we'd be foolish not to admit it publicly."

The former Secretary of Homeland Security, who was reportedly on McCain’s VP shortlist, added that McCain "had several good choices and I was one of them."

But he said the Palin selection was a "typical, bold McCain-like choice," and that the perception that she has been a drag on the Arizona senator’s chances was likely because "she's been hammered by the pundits."

Pennsylvania tops a shrinking list of battlegrounds for the McCain camp. The campaign has essentially conceded former wish-list states like Michigan and typical GOP strongholds like Colorado. But both McCain and running mate Sarah Palin have spent the race’s waning days essentially re-enacting Hillary Clinton’s successful strategy in the weeks leading up to the state’s Democratic primary– reaching out to working-class white voters in the rural and western parts of Pennsylvania.

"Unless we win Pennsylvania, I don't think [McCain] is elected president," Ridge told the Tribune-Review.

That offensive coincided with comments by Rep. John Murtha, an Obama surrogate, that some voters in that area are “racist” – and made Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor, Ed Rendell, nervous enough to ask the campaign to send the Illinois senator back to a state that had been considered a likely win.

Clinton and Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden, who both have roots in Scranton, have made appearances on the trail there this month.

UPDATE: In a statement issued by the McCain campaign Friday afternoon, Ridge said his remarks had been misconstrued. "I was asked a question, and I delivered an honest answer that was taken completely out of context. I wholeheartedly believe that John McCain made the right choice by selecting Sarah Palin to join him on the ticket,” he said.

“As a former two-time Governor of Pennsylvania, I was simply making the point that, of course, the dynamics of the race in PA would be different if the former governor of PA were on the ticket. The dynamics of the race would be different in Florida if Governor Crist were on the ticket. Or Minnesota if Pawlenty had been selected. That's a given. I have stated many times, as I did today, that I believe John made an excellent choice and that Governor Palin will make a great Vice President. I have witnessed firsthand the excitement she has generated in Pennsylvania and throughout America and I believe she will help deliver our Commonwealth's 21 electoral votes to our GOP ticket this November 4th."

As an Obama supporter, Palin was the gift that keeps on giving.

So, yes, either Ridge or Romney would have made the race much closer or worse.

So, just keep pandering to the rabid right of the party!

Majrhoulihan   October 24th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Ugh…how about:
"What if Tom Ridge were on the GOP Ticket?" The question is in the subjunctive form; the verb is not "was."

Running for president post requires lots of spending. I don't think his reflects that he will spend unwisely if he become president.

We should look at the fact that:
1. how he sourced for his own fundings without using public funds,
– resourceful person who can find own solution without relying on tax
payers money.
2. how he influenced donors to raise funds,
– influential leader who can command the trust of the people to believe
in him.
3. how he managed his funds.
– evidence from election, he can afford to advertise widely and
conquered the red states showed that he could manage his
money well, which is good as a government.

You could gauge your leader to some extend by looking at how he persevere tough elections, and manage the resources and spending. Do look beyond the surface. Unlike Palin, who spent lavishly on her appearance but quite disappointing in substance.

jason bartlett   October 24th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Wouldn't matter. McCain has botched this thing so bad that even if Jesus was his running mate, he would lose. Palin has just added the high hilarity. In fact, without her, his campaign would be painfully pathetic and very, very sad. She brings the funny.

NIKKI, SACRAMENTO CA   October 24th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Columbo gets it right….

Ah .. . Sorry to bother you Mr. Obama, Sir

Excuse me Mr. Obama, I mean Senator Obama, sir. Um . . . know you are busy and important and stuff. I mean running for President is very important and . . . ah . . . I hate to bother you. I will only take a minute ok, sir?

See, I have these missing pieces that are holding me up, and I was wondering sir, if you could take time out of your busy schedule and help me out. You know, no big deal, just some loose ends and things.

Hey, you have a nice place here! The wife sees houses like this on TV all the time and says boy she wishes she had digs like this you know? Is that painting real? Really? Wow. I saw something like that in a museum once!

Oh, sorry sir. I didn't mean to get off the track. So if you could just help me out a minute and give me some details, I will get right out of your way. I want to close this case and maybe take the wife to Coney Island or something. Ever been to Coney Island ? No, I didn't think so. .

Well, listen, anyways, I can't seem to get some information I need to wrap this up. These things seem to either be "locked" or "not available'.. I'm sure it's just some oversight or glitch or something, so if you could you tell me where these things are . . . I . . . I . . . have them written down here somewhere . . . oh wait. Sorry about the smears. It was raining out. I'll just read it to you.

Could you help me please find these things, sir?

He blames the pundits. Too much. It couldn't be that Palin is incompetent, could it? McCain had his chance, and he made his choice. Now he's paying the price.

Marie   October 24th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Why are Palin's children, especially the younger girl, not in school? Here in NJ children between the ages of 6 and 16 are mandated to be in school a certain number of days per year. Why is this child being paraded around as if she is on an extended vacation??

Mike in Ohio   October 24th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

This is Ridge's line that stands out to me:

… he said the Palin selection was a "typical, bold McCain-like choice"

Yes, exactly. This is typically how McCain makes his decisions — by hip-shots and gut feels. Does he do an analytical evaluation of alternatives? No, too complicated. Use common sense? Nah, sensational choices get more attention for a self-proclaimed maverick. And so, he makes choices like Sarah Palin for VP, which gets some great short-term results, but which are devastating in the long run.

McCain is trying to TELL us that Obama is a dangerous choice for President when this country will be tested. But McCain is DEMONSTRATING through his actions that he, himself, is the scariest prospect for that role.

Hmmmm… I find it interesting… a *big* *black* man attacks a poor defenseless white woman, robs her, and tells her she will vote for Obama, carves a *backward* "B" in her cheek. This is almost right out of the white racist play book: "Black man attacks white woman"… and in a red-neck region no less??? could it be a fabrication? Anyway, why would he carve the letter *backward* ???

This is Steve, Shawn's long lost brother. I tried to get a job at Fox News, but they said I was over qualified because I went to Trade School. Yes, McCain would have had a much better chance at winning if he selected Tom Ridge, Mitt Romney, Tom Byron, Ron Jeremy, or anyone else. Palin knows it and she is already starting to distance herself from McCain. She thinks she will win in 2012. Please, by 2012, she'll be spit out of the bottom of the porn industry.

Sarah Palin Is the Big Winner in this Mess   October 24th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Only 44 years old with millions of fans. Remember, 70 million watched her only debate whereas only 56 million watched Obama. She has drawn enormous crowds for a VP including 60,000 in Orlando.

McCain has brought her down more than vice versa. Watch her in 2012 as she runs for President. This time she'll pick the VP and it will be a young star like herself.

Sarah Palin is the future without doubt. She's the only non-millionaire among the current candidates and is truly one of the people.

Ralph from Canada   October 24th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

The fact is that McCain still has a decent chance. Should he? I don't think so. He is competing with a far more superior campaign than his. He is also competing with a man who is way more intelligent than him.

He chose Govt Palin which I think was a wrong move because she is not qualified, has not shown that she capable of truly comprehending her job, and who is seen to the rest of the world as a beauty queen (look at some of the things the world leaders had to say to her at the U.N. conference in N.Y.). She won't be taken seriously.

lucy2   October 24th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

It's a shame McCain didn't listen to his gut and pick Lieberman or Ridge, things might be a little different for him now. His choice of Palin put party first, not country, and it was a major choice made quickly without enough consideration. That is not what I want in a President, and Palin is not what I want in a VP.
The people who have rejected Palin did so because she has proven to be ill-informed not only of national and global issues but of what the VP job actually entails, and hypocritical in many of the things she says. She's also become divisive, outrageous, and at times insulting, and has highlighted the serious flaws in the campaign.
Mr. Ridge, you give far too much credit to the talking heads on basic cable. Her being a drag on the ticket has nothing to do with pundits "hammering" her, but with the American people looking at what McCain and Palin have to offer us both with their plans and judgements, and saying no thank you.

Carole   October 24th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

McCain's judgment came into question as soon as he picked Palin. He picked an image; definitely not a well qualified individual.

I know of two instances that when told someone criticized her, Palin immediately asked who said that; she wanted to know their name. I found that quite alarming considering the fact that her husband ran around with a camera taking pictures in the trooper case. Not presidential material. More like obsessive behavior.

And the fact that she has not released all her medical records, full disclosure, indicates that she must be hiding something. What makes her so special over all the other candidates in the history of this nation?

She has a good facade that she can put up but nothing behind that facade… nothing that non-hardcore conservative Republicans could support. But who am I to complain…. I wanted Obama to win anyways. observer   October 24th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I still think Obama/Clinton ticket is a stronger bet than Obama/Biden.
At least Clinton speaks wisely. Biden can't match Palin popularity.

We can't deny that Palin can draw huge crowds even though someone may not like her. I suppose in politics she has no choice but to speak 'evilly' esp. under the Mc Cain ticket.

May be Palin will run for President in 2012. By that time Obama better has Clinton as VP. Otherwise, he will end up in tight race again which he has no time for it as he has to run the country concurrently.

Ruebin   October 24th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Actually, we should be very grateful to McCain for picking Palin as his running mate. Thanks to her, where she stands on the issues, her "qualifications"… or LACK of qualifications I should say, her total lack of knowledge as to what it takes to be VP… not to mention PRESIDENT, and SO MANY many of her mindless, stupid and scatterbrained statements over the past several months… she has now given Obama/Biden a real chance for a huge LANDSLIDE win this election.

For those who think McCain's campaign has been the worst in a long time – your memories are very short and your views very narrow. Al Gore managed to blow it despite following a popular Clinton at a time when the economy was in the 7th or 8th year of expansion (the dot.com bust was not yet fully realized) and there was no unpopular war and no public knowledge of the pending 9-11 threat. He couldn't have had a better scenario and lost. Even more recently, John (he was for it before he was against it) Kerry managed to lose despite a war that was already turning sour and a large advantage in Dem party registration. On the other hand, McCain faces a severe disadvantage in party registration, an unpopular war, bad economics and is being severely outspent be someone who broke is word on campaign finance. It's amazing he's within 20 points. No candidate of the incumbent President's party has ever won an election in a recession.

Republicans have a history of nominating old and/or stupid people to high office (Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Dan Quayle, Bob Dole, George Allen, George Bush, Fred Thompson, Dr. Frist, Dick Armey and John McCain). So picking Palin over Ridge is not at all surprising.

There has to be something about the conservative Republican philosophy that fosters this.

If McCain would have stayed independent and not pandered to the GOP base, like you need to get those guys to vote republican? you would have had a shot with the very important independent voters but instead you thought getting a woman, any woman would win you votes. OBAMA/BIDEN SUPPORTERS, the confidence and enthusiasm are great, but we MUST turn them into ACTUAL VOTES!!! Remember, anything can happen between now and November 4th (11 days prior to Election Day are like dog years in politics). We must turn out big, vote early if at all possible, and PACK OUR PATIENCE because lines will be long, voting machines will break down, and, YES, some of our voting efforts will be met with trickery from the other side.

If you can, take a high-risk registered, but likeminded voter to the polls with you to cast a vote for OBAMA/BIDEN. Also, if you’re not already helping to get out the vote, please visit the Obama website to find out how you can help the campaign, especially in toss-up states. Again, we must not take a victory for granted. History tells us that big leads in the polls have often come back to bite.

A special note to YOUNG PEOPLE. You’ve been key in helping Senator Obama make it to this point in the campaign and your turnout during early voting and on Election Day is especially critical to OBAMA/BIDEN winning this election. We are SO counting on you to turn out, too, and make sure your peers turn out as well!

If it took Ridge being on the ticket for McCain to win then I guess he lost, but take heart. He did make a robo call for him. Maybe that will help somewhere….far as I can tell so far that drives more votes TO Obama. Everytime McCain gets more negative, Obama gets more votes and more money. Keep it up McCain…give you something else to complain about next time. You can sit and mutter while you wait for Congress to come back in January.

Donald   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Darn iam over here crying cause McCain and Palin r losin acordin to the polls,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and Iam glad about it, cause of the lies, and way they just downed a REAL man who is about the people and not about the money

Wayne   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

No one could beat Obama at this historic moment in time. Obama is a candidate that comes along only once every couple of generations. We are all blessed to be alive to witness this. Black voter, white voters, hispanic voters, asian voters..majorities in nearly all ethnic groups are voting for Obama. Young voters and old voters..majorities in both age groups are voting for Obama. We havent seen the country this unified before…we may never see this again.

Also, remember, those voters who are supporting McCain and Palin..they are the same voters that gave us Bush TWICE and caused tremendous harm to the quality of life of every single American across this nation.

Audrey   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

It is very scary to be reading about voters encountering problems with the computer systems in place. Reports continually are stating that the difficulties are occuring when voters select Obama and not McCain. People should be outraged and extremely concerned. Are we going to have another 2004? Officials in these cities experiencing these problems need to act NOW.

Paul   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

McCain probably still would've lost, but it wouldn't be such a landslide. The truth is nobody could make Grampa Munster more appealing.

Jeff in California   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Picking Tom Ridge as McCain's VP would have shown good judgement; opposite of the poor judgement McCain exercised with Palin.

McCain was no mavrick. He didn't buck his party or the party's conservative wing. Instead, he picked Palin rather than make a sound choice.

McCain is unfit to lead.

j   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

I think the main reason McCain is behind has to do with the type of campaign he's running. He's doesn't appear to be getting good advice and he doesn't appear to be in command. Palin is just one of the problems but it's not all of it. He's jumping from one tactic to another without any consistency. I understand when McCain & Obama met with the president concerning the economic crisis, Obama had at least 4 things he wanted to see done and McCain didn't have any. It's not Palin that's the problem, it's the man at the head of the ticket.

Alex in the I-4 Corridor   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

There's still time to dump Palin for Ridge. Not that it would make any difference on the outcome but just to confirm how erratic McBush is.

Obama-Biden '08 and '12.

Marc from San Diego   October 24th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

It's a good thing McCain managed to secure the extreme right wing base and the state of Alaska with his Palin pick, both of which would have been on his side anyways. Someone should have educated him about our riduculous electoral college system, and how swing states choose our president every four years before he selected a VP candidate.

Linda32   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Many Republicans thought that the choice of Palin as a runningmate was so exciting and brilliant, back in early September. I think most of them now realize that that choice is what is ultimately going to sink McCain's chances. Palin has been a disaster. Never in Presidential politics have so many prominent party members refused to support their own ticket!

B.Travers   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Guess who is conducting the polls where double cigits are showing?

Speider   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I can hardly wait for this to be over. This election has shown just how foolish our political system is and how much politicians believe we, as a people, are stupid and sheep-like. The outcome of this election may very well prove them right.

Two years from now, almost one half of this country will be avoiding eye-contact with the other half whilst scraping bumper stickers off their car. I certainly pray those doing so are sorry due to the success of the elected President and Vice President,

Dan   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

it seems that Ridge would not be the drag that Palin is now to McCain's campaign. It is is also likely that he would not have generated the big gains that McCain saw during the convention. But the economy has trumped both of these effects and neither one could salvage a campaign so short on solutions.

Independent white female patriotic voter   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Ridge would have definitely helped Mccain. The Palin pick has hurt Mccain and will be one of the reasons for his loss in this election. With all due respect to every" older person". Having said that, not only is Mccain old fashion war minded, old fashion economy minded, but he is also a very grumpy old man. I cannot imagine him dealing with the difficulties we are facing as a nation and on a global level. I am sorry but Mccain does not have it! He is a great war hero Palin is a great advocate for special needs, was a good mayor for a small town in Alaska, and has been a typical politician and governor for Alaska, but that is all think they should be at this time. Thanks but no thanks!
Mccain should have played clean, picked a strong VP (on the economy) and maybe people would have trusted his judgement and his motives. I think he has enough homes, he does not need one more house! Palin can go back to bragging about what a reformer she is and abuse her power in Alaska, we'll take "that one"!

Jack CArlson   October 24th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Ridge is boring and was a failure in his past position in ADM.
McCain and Palin will win this year and Palin will be Pres in 20112 (either way).

Pete from Pittsburgfh   October 24th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I'm from Pittsburgh, a life-long republican, and I would be voting for McCain if he had chosen Ridge. I'm not as pro-Ridge as I am disturbed by McCain's choice of Palin. A clever tactic, that has proven to have backfired — I think because the media has taken the time to ask her the hard questions — ones that can't be answered via her memorizing scripts and talking points. That is the surest test of someone's depth and breadth as a leader — how they answer the questions their handlers hadn't anticipated. On that front, she fails miserably.

KC   October 24th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

The big time right-wingers don't like Ridge because he is pro-choice. That's their number one issue. They don't care if the economy is in the tank and we've started wars that we don't know how to finish. Sure Ridge is a smart, strong leader, but the nut-jobs love Palin. Too bad for them, no one else does!

ZOO   October 24th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Anne in Amish Country   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

He's not winning this state! It would have been a completely different race if McCain had picked Tom Ridge or another qualified candidate. He would never have gone off the deep end. I'd like to remember him as heroic, but I'll have to settle for pathetic.

Joe The Engineer   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

If anybody else with little knowledge about the issues and foreign policy knowledge/experience would have made Obama/Biden ticket less likely to win the election. I myself was leaning towards McCain before Palin, the image i had about McCain was a great person. But after he bought Palin to the lime light, I am like, ok, this is not going to work.

Mohsen Emami   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I agree that Tom Ridge would have been a much better choice than sara Palin as mcCain's running mate. It is absolutely mind boggling to see that McCain has selected Sara Palin rather than anybody else who would have brought much more stature and experience into his ticket. However, having said this, I think no matter whome he had chosen for VP, Obama would win this election. Because the problem is not just Sara Palin, it is mostly John McCain's record of supporting Bush 90% of the time that will ultimately be his demise.

Shellita   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

It wouldn't matter if McCain picked Jesus Christ himself. They hate republicans so bad they would drive them all into the ground.

Subtleone   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I never thought she was a good choice after I found out who she was, where she did both her mayoring, and governing. I was curious, but not entirely taken by her. After her interviewing, I was convinced that she has no business USA Vice Presidenting. Her wiifeing, hockeymommying, beauty contesting, floutisting, weather girling, various college educationing, pitbulling, cribou hunting, fishing, lipsticking, and baby having, are all very interesting but not someone I'd like to have for VP. Now she's supposedly doing her mavericking, and soon enough she'll be grandmothering. I'd say she has quite enough to keep her busy. Trouble with that is after she and her low grade terrorizing co-hort lose, will we have to keep seeing her again for her future vying for Presidenting? Alaska, please keep her safe in your Alaskaing because ALSO, she and her voice are so tiring.

Laura, Boston   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Boy he's quite the humble guy huh?

First off if John McCain had named Tom Ridge as VP, the MSM would have said ho-hum, boring choice!!

Then the right would have turned completely off since Ridge isn't a true conservative.

Next, the convention wouldn't have been watched especially losing one day to the hurricane.

Finally, Tom Ridge is tied in to George Bush big time! No, McCain made a good choice. The MSM couldn't accept her and let their biases show though. Especially people I used to admire like Campbell Brown and Paul Begala. We know MSNBC is in the tank also with the NY TIMES. Olbermann had to be taken off election coverage due to his blantant bias.

Tim Russert would be appalled at his crew for the partiality they have given to Obama.

grahame   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Palin is so bad that perhaps Tom Ridge has a point. Face it McCain could have done a lot worse. I don't want a gambler in the White House it's just too dangerous

Chris   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I hope McCain does not win PA. Palin has to be the worst choice of anyone running for the office of President. I would never vote for McCain for fear something would happen to him and we would have Caribou Barbie in the White House!

Pat-Pittsburgh   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I live in Pittsburgh, don't be so sure PA wouldn't go red. I have seem neighborhoods that I know for a fact are democratic strongholds with lots of McCain signs on their lawns, porches, houses, trees, and even roofs.

Sue   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

It's not Palin fault that she is stupid, uninform,etc.,etc. SHE IS WHAT SHE IS!
It's McCain, who picked her as his running mate.
It's McCain, who supported Palin to be the future (within 3.5 years) US President.
It's McCain, who MADE the decision and SINK the GOP with him.

Go Obama-Biden

Debbie   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Ridge? Yawn. McCain would probably be further behind.

Ron   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Now they are starting to outrightly makes ripples for McCain. Wait till the election is overand 'that other one' loses. The repugs will certainly have a field day ripping him up. McCain on the other hand does not really care and running a scorched earth campaign because this is it for him – win or lose.

Artful   October 24th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

When McCain announced his partner on the Hate Slate, it really seemed to me that it was a gesture of contempt to the fringe of the Republican Party who would not accept Ridge or Lieberman because they represented a McCain moderate type. I'm reasonably positive however that he had no idea what he bought into when he selected her!

Lisa   October 24th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Sarah Palin was a gimmick choice. Her appointment was the first indication that McCain will do anything and say anything to become the next President. He has never put the country before his own ambition and has demonstrated lack of judgement, indulged in old fashioned Republican tactics and seemed confused and angry most of the time. I have yet to hear from the McCain campaign how his policies differ from George Bush.

I don't necessarily agree with all of Tom Ridge's politics, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with the prospect of as the VP, and potentially President, than Palin. It has nothing to do with gender and everything to with knowledge of the issues.

Teddy   October 24th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

No big difference. Everything is on Obama's back: low Bush approval rate, financial crisis, economic difficulties, stock market crash, media overwhelming support of Democrats, and etc. It does not matter who are on the tickets. Democrats are heavily favored. For instance, my wife was very interested in Obama at beginning. Later, especially, after debates (Obama halting sentences), she is OK with Obama. But she will vote for Obama simply because he is a Democrat. She would vote for McCain if McCain was a Democrat and Obama was a Republican.

larry wi   October 24th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

People of PA keep in mind your right to bear and own arms, keep in mind your right to hunt, and also keep in mind that Obama/Biden think of you as uneducated red necks. They are NOT for the average hard working man and woman, they are for thenselves,. Where do you think the $$ will come from to fund all of the POOR man incentives they are blabbering about, it will come from you! Stop and think about what your real values are and as to whether or not you want to protect and keep your rights. You talk about McCains ready-aim-shoot policy, isn't that what any of you do when being attacked, and or when you are in the woods hunting, when you are on a deer hunt do you stop the Deer before pulling the trigger and discuss it's options with it? Wouldn't work for the Deer and it wouldn't work if you were being attacked!

So CNN, we all noticed how eager you guys were to print the story about the McCain campaign volunteer that was supposedly attacked by black man that carved the letter "B" on her face. Then why not so eager to cover the story now that she has admitted to making the whole thing up to try to race bait the election in favor of McCain? McCain & Palin have actually spoken with this pathetic, degenerate, racist, lying, ignorant stupid girl about this story??? So are they going to call her back and accuse her of lying to them now??? McCain & Palin are seriously the two most pathetic human beings in politics in the history of politics. Their little political theatre parlor tricks, ranging from Joe the plumber to Ashley Todd the "I lie about getting attacked by a black man because I'm a degenrate lying little pathetic twirp" are a true metaphor for McCain's entire campaign: Race bate, lie, decieve, manipulate, & lie again.

Please post this comment!!!!
I have tried several times to say this and have failed each time. This is basically off topic-but vitally important to me!!
When Biden said Obama would be challenged by some type of crisis I believe he was speaking in generalities,i.e. Kennedy, etc. However, no one seems ready to finish his statement that Obama would handle Biden has said many times "I will tell you what you need to know, not what you want to hear". That is a sign of a true leader. He also said very early in the primaries Obama may not be ready to be president, but he has said in the last few months he has watched and seen him grow and learn. I have been an avid supporter of Sen. Biden and it infuriates me when things he says are taken out of context!! Especially by a dimwit like Sarah Palin!!
If you print this CNN, thank you very, very much.

I am a Democrat and a huge Obama supporter. When McCain was about to pick a VP, my greatest fear was Ridge. He would have made a difference in Pennsylvania without question. Also, he might have swung many other states. Lieberman did not scare me at all. Of course, Sarah Palin illicited a response of: "Who?!" That was followed by a huge sigh of relief when I found out what an extremist, lightweight she was. Thank God McCain blew it!

Indiana Joe   October 24th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I think McCain should have asked Michelle Obama for the VP position… Did you see her today in a rally in Ohio? She did great, knowledgeable, poised, calm and graceful. She actually makes 1000 times more sense, than Palin, hmmmm… does Palin ever makes sense?

Monica (Houston, TX)   October 24th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

OBAMA/BIDEN SUPPORTERS, the confidence and enthusiasm are great, but we MUST turn them into ACTUAL VOTES!!! Remember, anything can happen between now and November 4th (11 days prior to Election Day is like dog years in politics). History tells us that big leads in the polls have come back to bite.

Palin was the best pick for John McCain. I was voting for Obama anyway.

Also how about that woman in Pittsburg, PA that said she was attacked by an Obama supporter because she worked for McCain/Palin ticket.

It has been proven that this attack was a lie, according to PA police. This woman was trying to insist negative feels toward Obama supporters. McCain/Palin paid her $30,000. Another trick another day. Shame on John MCain.

It is exactly these so called "bold " decisions which often are made carelessly, that he is behind in polls. We are talking about a running mate who could be ready on day one. Leadership of this country and the world is a serious matter and in that he made a poor judgment.

Of course she's being hammered! Not a day goes by without some mindless remark from this intellectually challenged woman. How there are people out there willing to vote this sideshow clown into office is beyond me. American voters became the laughing stock of the globe after allowing the incompetent Bush administration to remain in the white house. I can't even imagine what the perception of us would be if we find ourselves with an erratic elderly jerk and his babbling barbie doll running this country. Are you saying Tom Ridge's ties to the Bush whitehouse would definitely have given McCain a big boost in PA?

Rural CA   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

All McCain had to do was to pick a recognized Republican moderate. His choice of Palin has been part of a pattern of impulsiveness that is not presidential. People have noticed, and Obama should just about run the table Nov. 4 as a consequence.

Geo Joe in ABQ   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

What ifs already? A lot of what ifs before McCain has a chance. What if McCain ran an "honorable" campaign? What if McCain had an economic policy? What if McCain didn't look like he was ready to keel over? What if McCain had debated the issues? What if McCain wasn't so erratic?

Larry   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I'm a Republican. Have been for over forty years. When McCain picked Palin, I waited and evaluated her as best I could, from what was presented. I quickly saw that she could memorize a script but could not answer a question about anything. I concluded she could not manage a two car junk yard, let alone run the country. I will close my eyes and vote for Obama.

Vince -- Northern California   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

What if McCain hadn't picked "Caribou Barbie"? Gee he'd have some credibility, but he would still have the same ideas, and skeletons that HE VOTED WITH BUSH 90% of the time, and wants to help only the mega millionaires of America with his washed up trickle down economics theories.

John,

Olivia   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

If Romey had been in the ticket instead, it would have been a close race to Nov 4. McCain didn't need Redge he needed someone who understands economics and probably Michigan and PA would have been whithin reach. Also, instead of suspending his campaign and parachuting on DC he could have sent Romey, as Barak did with Biden during the Georgia crisis, and continue his campaign.

I still think that Obama would be leading by 5-7%. Definitively Palin was a bad pick and gets worse by the day.

James   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

You mean the guy off the ticket thinks the they would be better off with him? Hardly news.

Chris from STL   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

The pundits hammered her because Palin gave them a chance to by being bombastic and making 'hot air' comments (like bridge to no where, ebay auction, community organizer, etc). It did not take much time for the pundits as well as ordinary voters to realize that she was "shallow" and a borderline "fraud".

She earned more detractors than supporters because of her actions …

Independent & bothered by Palin   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Palin was an AWFUL selection. McCain made a stupid choice to pander to the right wing of the party that was not going to vote for Obama anyway and to think this was a way to galvanize the support of the female electorate — the disenfranchised Hillary supporters. He underestimated the intelligence of the American voters by picking an unqualified person, who lacks international experience and a depth of understanding of the issues, is not ready for prime time and is well outside the mainstream on many social issues. She is a big turn off to independent voters, like myself. McCain had an array of more qualified individuals to choose from him — Romney, Lieberman, Pawlenty, Ridge, Bloomberg to consider to name a few. Ultimately, if he loses the choice of Palin may be his greatest undoing, even more than his inability to articulate a coherent plan on the economy and his inability to refute Obama's economic and other proposals.

G. Robinson   October 24th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Then McInsane would just lose with Ridge on the ticket. It don't matter. He would have still ran the most dispicable campaign in American history. What McNasty has done is clear the way for Palin to create her own base and run for President in 2012. Hopefully the same people who have rejected her during this election will reject her in 2012. She'll be the same pit bull with a different shade of lipstick and she'll talk about everything that President Obama has done wrong since he was elected President. We already got you pegged Palin. So you better come with something fresh in 2012, because we won't be hearing you. We will once again support the Obama/Biden ticket for a second term in office.

Racist comments have been used as crutches by the Dems (including Murtha) to solidify their positions. How many more years do folks have to endure this abuse.

Dandy   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Tom Ridge would have been a better choice for John McCain than Sarah Palin but Mitt Romney would have been the best choice considering the economic turmoil our country is facing. But no, John McCain and his advisers chose an ultraconservative woman in the hopes of both solidifying the Republican base and attract the Hillary supporters and the overall female votes. But guess what? It's pretty obvious that that political strategy didn't work too well for them.

On the contrary, Barack Obama, in his first most important decision as a presidential candidate carefully, conservatively, and intelligently picked Joe Biden, the most solid VP choice he could make.

John McCain has already made one of the biggest mistakes of his political career and that is his pick of Sarah Palin. It's time to elect a president who will think of the country first before any political agenda.

Michelle D. - Atlanta, GA   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Anyone but Palin would have given him more votes. I actually used to respect McCain and had actually thought about voting Republican before he picked Palin – and I'm a Democrat!!!

Now he has truly shown his bad judgement by picking her to pander to the women's vote, running a sleezy campaign and admitting he doesn't know anythign about the economy!

What a loser. He has only himself and the GOP to blame.

Terry   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

The V.P. choice has nothing to do with my vote. John McCain appears angry and out of control one minute, and all smiles and happiness the next minute. John McCain can not complete a sentence without looking down at his notes or up at the teleprompter. I feel I have a right to judge John McCain on these issues, because I too served in Viet Nam, and I know that memory loss will come with age. I feel it is time to let the younger members of our society take the reigns and guide our nation forward. No offense, age and experience are blown out of proportion. Look what age and experience has done to Wall Street, the Congress and Senate, and especially the Treasury.

Michael, Pensacola, FL   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

While you're at it, what if McCain was not the candidate. Each prospect brings their own strengths and weaknesses. Obama's actions were based on his strengths AND his opponents weaknesses, so he could have made different arguments and he could have chosen a different running mate on top of that.

Thomas   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

As a Democrat, my biggest worry was that McCain would pick Ridge for his VP. He would have won for sure. Imagine my relief when he pick Palin, a complete and utter idiot who can barely form a sentence.

Laverne   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Poor Tom Ridge, he as Joe Lieberman and Mitt Romney are just saying what they have to say. I bet all of them are saying what the hell was John thinking behind his back. I am sure Mitt Romney is feeling validated right now since "It's the economy stupid" and John McCain did not pick him.

arnolde   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Maybe if McCain had chosen Ridge instead of Palin, there wouldn't be this groing stream of Republicans saying "No Thanks"

Latest of them is McCain advisor Charles Fried, former Solicitor General under Reagan.

Fried announced that he has voted for Obama-Biden by absentee ballot. In his letter to Trevor Potter, the General Counsel to the McCain-Palin campaign, he asked that his name be removed from the several campaign-related committees on which he serves. In that letter, he said that chief among the reasons for his decision "is the choice of Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis."

Mark   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Does McCain really think we believe he really picked Palin on his own! He had to have been told to pick her once they found out Hillary wasn't picked. Thet have to do interviews together so she doesn't look silly and everyone knows that when this is over he will be very bitter and angry because they wouldn't let him follow his gut and choose who he wanted and he won't live down the shame of his campaign, because of the republican powers that be he had to sit back and watch them destroy an otherwise good man who has watched his life change, no maverick here, he didn't even stand up for himself to the people running his campaign, they didn't even mention his first marriage on the video at the convention they made it look like he went from prisoner to finding the Beer Queen and forgot all about his 1st wife, sad, he has let them destroy his future because of the low life campaign.. so sad

Mickie in PA   October 24th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I didn't like Ridge as Governor, so why would I care if he were on the ticket. I am a white, 64-yr-old, female, blue collar worker from PA and the only people I believe who will vote for McCain are two types (1) the republicans who only listen to the hype and follow like lambs and (2) the people influenced by race. Let's be honest, there are still plenty of people from my generation that will not vote for a person of color or from any other race than caucasion. Can you imagine Palin taking over for an ailing McCain and having her being tested. McCain makes a big issue out of his mother being in her 90's, but she wasn't tortured for 5 years in a POW camp and being the wife of a Viet Nam vet, I'm cannot believe that did not affect McCain detrimentally physically and mentally. Just look at all our poor Iraq soldiers. No Sarah Baraclueless and no to McCain no matter who he picked.

Steve   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

McCain would have had my vote if he picked someone like Ridge, Romney or Lieberman. However, he showed ridiculously poor judgment in picking an inexperienced, religious right appeasing hyperconservative hypocrite in Sarah Palin. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same why.

And why are we listening to Murtha at all? Didn't he lose all credibility when he suggested we withdraw from Iraq a few years ago and leave the Iraqi people in a total bind? I disagree with the Republicans framing this as a "win/lose" scenario, but I disagreed just as much with people like him saying we should leave the country in chaos.

Former Democrat   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

The responses on this page exactly illustrate why I left the Democratic Party. Although I continue to hope that Senator Obama is really the moderate, bipartisan visionary that he claims to be, his supporters and surrogates, bolstered by an equally vicious and partisan media, have run the most divisive, vicious, bigoted and racist campaign I have seen in my 56 years. At the beginning of the campaign, I did and do disagree with him on every issue from excessive taxation to his poor judgment on the Iraq war, but I at least had hopes that the campaign would change the divisiveness of recent years. Well, it changed it, but it made it worse. I will not be returning to the Democratic Party.

anne   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

vmarsha   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Can you say "implosion"? What kind of political party is McCain trying to lead? One that obviously thinks he's lost it and not competent enough to pick a VP.

Doug   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

If McCain had not picked Palin he would have had a better chance of winning. The really unfortunate result of his pick is now that she has had the exposure she will probably mount a campaign for the 2012 election.

rwalters   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I beg to differ with him. Palin has been a drag due to the fact that she is not ready to be President. I am insulted that McCain thought Palin would be good on his ticket to get Hillary voters. Palin is in no way comparable to Hillary Clinton. Hillary is extremely intelligent, knows government inside and out. Palin cannot even answer a question right. Also, McCain has had a little hot head issue going on (or short man syndrome) from day one. I used to be a republican, not any more. Is this all the Republican party can come up with? Time for alot of us to move on to more educated more experienced leader.

SoCal   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

CNN, you reported the story of the woman attacked because she had a McCain sticker. And you reported that McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker told CNN that McCain and running mate Sarah Palin "spoke to the victim and her family after learning about the incident earlier this afternoon."

So when are you going to report that this whole story is a scam, and that this woman has now admitted that the whole story has been fabricated?

That's the kind of distraction and obfuscation coming from the McCain campaign.
The only real victim is the TRUTH!

Diane CA   October 24th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Palen has been a real drag on the stuffed shirt, McCain===which is a good thing since I can't stand either of them. Yes, McCain had other better choices for a VP pick. I think he picked Palen just to "SHOW" how much he thinks of himself. He's too arrogant for me. And his nasty campaign is something else.

A. Rohani   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Ridge is absolutely right.. Ridge would have brought a world of experience, the conservative base, and PA to the republican ticket. Instead McCain chose Palin, who didn't deliver the women vote (which she was supposed to), and drove away all independents. If McCain fumbles this badly on his most important pre-election choice, how can he be trusted with the running the country?

Please CNN let this be known……….2 NEWS KTUU.com.
YOU closed before I could add to Palin’s agenda……But some legislators in Alaska say the state's approach to the special needs community is nothing to be proud of. "I don't think there are many people in the Alaska disability community that would say she's been a champion for them," said Sen. Bill Wielechowski, an Anchorage Democrat. "And maybe she's changing her position on that, and I think that's a good thing." Despite Palin's support for children with disabilities, Sondra Thompkins, who's son has autism, participated in a rally against the governor Saturday. "We feel very strongly that Sarah Palin is not the right choice," Thompkins said. Some say Palin has supported special needs programs financially but has cut out others.

sally   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Not so much a bold choice…more ill-considered and desperate I think. And they all know it whether they admit it publicly or not….Palin is a drag on the ticket due to her own ineptness. She is hammered by the pundits because she is a loud mouthed know nothing who is way way out of her depth.

Thebe   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

How convenient that McCain campaign and Faux News, etc. have seem to forgotten the many Republicans and Conservatives who have "hammered" Palin. Why? Could it possibly be because she deserves it? You betcha!

Cathy Brandes   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

She has not been "battered by the pundits"! She is not qualified to be VP , she is absolutely not qualified to be President. She brought this on herself for not being candid, not answering questions and not answering intellgently to the questions she did decide to answer. This was a bad choice on McCain's part so he will have to live with the selection.
My guess Senator McCain is thinking Gov Pawlenty of Minnesota is not looking so boring now!

The problem for McCain is himself. All the spin and hype aside. We all have our good and our bad sides. Before he was shot down in Vietnam, McCain was known as a hot tempered, self centered spoiled punk. Then he was taken prisoner which brought out his best side albeit temporarily.
Thus fate made him a hero. Then after the war he reverted to type and was an adulterous leche who abandoned his faithfull wife for a young millionair heiress. He put on a pretty good show in the Senate for awhile but now under pressure we once again see the angry, bitter, shallow, small man that John McCain really is.

Tweet   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

I personally want to thank John McCain and the Republican Party for sticking Sarah Palin onto the ticket. She has sealed a victory for Barack Obama! I'm a life-long Democrat. My husband has been a life-long Republican. We joke each election that we cancel out each other's votes. But not this year….he was so angry that McCain would put our entire nation at risk with this person (being a female has nothing to do with it), that he is not only voting Obama, he has actually joined me in many hours of volunteering, and donating to his campaign. I'm GLAD Palin was chosen!!!

Brian   October 24th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

lol, a "typical, bold McCain-like" decision. How can a maverick make "typical…" decisions? Sounds like he's saying "it was McCain shooting from the hip, like usual." And he forgot to say that when McCain shoots from the hip, he misses the barn 100 percent of the time.

CitizenAJ   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

She has been hammered rightfully so. If you can hammer Obama, call him inexperience then we CAN DEFINITELY HAMMER PALIN because she is not experience or has the foundation/background to govern this nation. Her hammering is not because no one likes her, it is because when she speaks unscripted, unrehearsed, uncanned, she shows her ineptitued and lack of knowledge to govern this great nation. No, I am not calling her dumb or stupid, just incapable. Ridge and others know this but the say coyly as to not upset the McCain-Palin train wreck. No need, it is doing a FINE job of that by itself.

I just talked to YET ANOTHER life long republican, colleague of mine, he is NOT VOTING for the republican ticket. Likes Obama's plans better and his CHOICE OF VP! He shared a personal story of how a couple of his family members are suffering with medical bills after working hard all their lives. He liked the fact that Obama said healthcare is a RIGHT in the second debate verses McCain's response that it is a responsibility. TRUE Americans are speaking up and stepping up, truly putting "country first"! Hey, heeeeeey, hey!

Aint it great, Obama/Biden '08!

Is this another gop sour grapes and non endorsement…erosion is an ugly thing. Don't think too highly of yourself Mr. Ridge, McCain is a bitter old man trying to represent a positive young nation…square peg, round hole..won't work.

cool onlooker   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

What's the use of winning PA, even one more, or two states?

The landslide is already seen. Wake up and think about something more realistic: for example, how to keep your own job and home..

Or best of all, how to lose gracefully, just like Sen. Clinton did in June?

Greg, San Francisco, CA   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

If Ridge were on the ticket, his foreign policy adviser would probably make more than his stylist…

"WASHINGTON (AP) – An acclaimed celebrity makeup artist for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin collected more money from John McCain's campaign than his foreign policy adviser.

Amy Strozzi, who works on the reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" and has been Palin's traveling stylist, was paid $22,800, according to campaign finance reports for the first two weeks in October. In contrast, McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, was paid $12,500, the report showed."

Paula   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

One thing is for sure…McCain picked a looloo for a VP when he chose Palin. Ridge may have made a difference…who knows. If you notice, whenever Palin is speaking and someone steps up to her at the podium, it appears they are whispering…they aren't…they are giving her a refill….she's an airhead!

Stan   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I think McCain made the most unpatriotic judgement ever by picking Palin for Votes rather than thinking about the future of the country..in case. Tom Ridge was a more suitable choice. The same things he accuses Obama for, he practices them. He would rather win an election than grow America. I listen to Palin and I say…God Forbid. Palin should not be anywhere near the ticket in 2012.
And these tells you mor about the Republicans.

Praetorian   October 24th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It's unlikely McCain's prospects would be a great deal better if he had chosen someone other than Palin as his VP. Clearly–she's alienated some independents with her neophyte understanding of the law, foreign policy, and the constitution.

The biggest problem is the GOP's grip on the values of Reaganomics–despite overwhelming evidence of failure (even by Greenspan!!!)

Sadly–salaries, quality of life, and now investments of Americans have been sacrificed for a political ideology–touted for 3 decades by the GOP–that has turned their own reality of the world upside down.

Obama–with a mandate from leadership in both parties and a majority of the American people–perhaps can lead us in a less polarized direction that places a little more emphasis on people than just a "cost estimate" within the bottom line of American business.

Watching this campaign, it's scary that I'm reminded of Lincoln addressing the Union soldiers after the civil war. He said something to the effect of: Don't celebrate the defeat of the confederate soldiers, as they are once again your fellow Americans. The feelings have gotten so ugly in this race it almost feels like civil war… so sad.

As a self proclaimed "looney lefty" (my candidate would be Nader, but that's never gonna happen) I completely understand the frustration and anger felt by many on the left over the past 8 years. However, I do hope that if Obama wins (and I do hope so) that the Dems can be GRACIOUS in victory and try to heal some of the extreme divides. While I may not agree with McCain supporters, we're all going to have to work together, drop the hate, and find common ground if we want to fix this mess we're in.

This election is too close to call. The media would have you think that there's a 10 point lead ,but all the polls always, have the dems. way ahead. When Clinton ran in 92, they said he had 22 point spread, but won by only 9. There's some reason Obama can't close the deal, with all the money he should be 20 points ahead, but it's only 2-3 points. I don't think he can close the deal, I guess we'll see come nov. 4 I think people will tell you one thing and do another in the voting booth, Some will never vote for a black, but they wouldn't tell you that. I think that's the reason Obama hasn't been able to close the deal, hopefully he won't.

Although the choice of the VP running mate is important it should not take away from who is running for President, You can't match Palin against Obama no more than you can match Biden against McCain. Simply puit it's McCain against Obama, proven leadership and experience against someone who ahs neither and doesn't even come close, how can there possibly be a comparrison! A boy scout has more leadership experience and skills than the community organizer who is saying he is ready to lead as President. The decision of who to vote for should be quite simple, based on that simplistic approach. McCain may not be the most popular but he has all of the qualifications needed to be President, and he has already stood the test of time.

I find it interesting that Murtha, a white male was vilified for referring to 'some' citizens of Pennsylvania as rednecks. My whole thing is this, if it doesn't apply to you, then it shouldn't be offensive but if it does apply to you, wear the shoe if it fits. He didn't say all white people in PA are rednecks, he said SOME. I think the terminology could have been more respectful, but we all get the meaning. It's the Republicans who turned around and said that he was talking about all of western PA. Just a way to try and make the election tribal.

In the name of all that is holy, why on earth did McCain choose this albatross from Alaska as his running mate? She is rude, arrogant, dishonest, uneducated, irksome, inept, and sarcastic. Hmm…could this be indicative of his best judgment? Obama/Biden cannot came soon enough.

Well then, if Ridge were on the ticket I'd definitely be voting Obama. Go Sarah!

Who's Tom Ridge?

Sheryl   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I believe I would have voted for McCain, but not necessarily if Ridge had been chosen. The Palin decision definitely influenced my decision not to vote for McCain. Prior to his decision, however, I was very interested in his candidacy. While I am not sure of what choice I have left, I will not vote for McCain.

dude   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Palin is the reason I am not voting for McCain. She is not qualified and not prepared for the national, let alone international leadership position the VP holds. Once McCain announced her as his running mate, it spoke volumes about his decision making, or lack there of, ability. He is trying to do a Bush Sr move to get the right wing of the party. It worked with Quayle, however his opponent Mondale (YAWN!) was a loser. I do not believe it will work this time. Too bad, because he had many other more capable poosible running mates to choose from.

Scy   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Simple. McCain would have had a shot. ALL Palin did was get a handful of people, the base, excited. Otherwise she has been an unmitigated disaster.

cindy   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Anything would have been better than choosing someone as unintelligible and as incoherent and mal informed as Palin— Just about anyone would have been better, thank God he chose her…. It has shown americans his very mavericky, reckless, lack of judgement side and I'm sure glad I know it upfront!

Go Obama! Landslide it is!

nicole   October 24th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Palin lost it for McCain.

Bob in Ohio   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

To all you libs on here who think that Gov. Palin is an idiot- I have a question for you: how many of you have been elected to the position of Mayor of your city/town or Governor of your state? If you can't answer that question in the affirmative, shut up!

Ron   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Completely agree with you, Penna for Obama! I was born and raised in NW PA (Warren, up near Erie) and later lived in Pittsburgh, so when Senator Obama made that "bitter" comment, I thought he was spot on, as well. I understood, first hand, what he meant, which in large part, is why I moved away from PA over 5 years ago, but continue to watch the state with interest in this election. Very happy to see Obama up by so much in polling, and I think Rep. Murtha was right, in what HE said about Western PA as well! In terms of this ticker item, though, if Ridge were on McCain's ticket, it might help McCain somewhat, in PA, at least. McCain's campaign lost control when he put Palin on his ticket and now he is simply running scared rather than running his campaign. Ridge would have been a saner choice, but in either scenario, the Obama/Biden ticket beats all! YES WE CAN!!

Barbara PTA Mawm   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Supporting McCain's choice of Palin makes it clear that Ridge would have been an equally bad choice….well wait a minute. No one can beat Palin as the worst possible choice.

Manny   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Are these guys still talking????

John from White Plains, NY   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Ridge would have been a much more palatable choice, but either way, McSame will not win!!! There is a wind of change coming and let's get ready to enjoy this refreshing breeze…

Obama will be much better than anything we have had in the past eight years. he will surround himself w/ great folks, starting w/ Biden. Hopefully, American will get it right, and not make the mistakes of 2000 and 2004. Can anyone out there honestly say that Al Gore would not have been a better choice than the current Mutt and Jeff? Look at mess they have made…

Obama/Biden '08/'12

Diane   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Why is it a few respected Republicans have all but admitted that the pick of Gov. Palin has been a drag on the McCain ticket? It will be interesting to see how her career flourishes after all of this. Yes, it would be interesting to see what the campaign would have been like if McCain had chosen someone else but it is still hard to imagine that this country would let go of the contempt they now feel towards the republican party due to Bush's administration, particularly his hidden door policy and the likes of Karl Rove. This country feels it is a time to heal and Sen. Obama looks to be the choice. Let us as American all stand behind him and get this country back on its feet. Keep the jobs here, put the CEO's that are raping the firms they leave in shambles in prison where they belong and let us put our safety first and foremost.

Paul Thompson   October 24th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Jennifer   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Ridge? hmm. well….he won't be that much of a drag as Palin the animal hunter is. But people simply don't want 4 more years of the evil republican claws of George Bush. we are simply sick of this. enough is enough. Let's give the democrats a try. This cesspool created and deepened by Bush has to be wiped out.

NoMccain   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

But you are NOT a woman Tom… the goal was to get all of those stupid Hillary voters who were just voting for Hillary because she was a woman…
Now you are openly admitting defeat for the Republican party.

Michael   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Maybe Tom Ridge would have helped. But if McCain were not an angry bitter war monger who lies non stop. That would help even more.

barbara   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

PA will back Obama/Biden. We will not let McCain/Palin win this election. If we are bitter, it is because of what has happened the past 8 years. GO BLUE PA !! Yes, Yes, Yes we can!!

Karl   October 24th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

"Typical, bold McCain-like choice" is code for typically impulsive and haphazard decisions. I don't want a guy like that answering the red phone.

And one more whining Republican blaming the media for Palin's fall. The media's been completely fair to Caribou Barbie. She's had plenty of air time to show her true colors and we've seen them: can't put an English sentence together, doesn't know much about anything, can't act consistently on her "maverick/reformer" claims, and can't tell the truth on her resume, and still doesn't know her job description! What's the media and pundits supposed to do? Edit her sentences for her and then splice it together again so it makes sense for all of us? I've never seen such a bunch of whiners from these paranoid, persecuted, spineless Republicans!!

charlie in maine   October 24th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

It would have brought more to play than just PA's electoral votes. It would have said I want to pick a responsible VP who could step in if need be. As it is no one is taking the experience thing seriously because compared to Palin, Obama is a sage. Compred to his pick of Biden she just seeems silly.

Sad voter in Arizona   October 24th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Calling the decision to choose Palin a "typical, bold McCain-like choice" speaks worlds about McCain's judgement.

Or rather, lack thereof.

Obama/Biden 08

No2RepubGimmicks   October 24th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Palin really did it to herself… It's not like they just happened to pluck her from obscurity…she WANTED to be VP and rallied hard to get the McCain campaign's attention.

Yet, she was unprepared…with no knowledge of anything beyond matters that deal with Alaska. And it shows in the worst of ways.

She's cleaned up her act 'a little'..but, it's too late.

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   October 24th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Murtha, Jackson, Rangel Pelosi, Reid, Sharpton, et al,
please just keep your mouth shut unless you're reciting one of the talking points from the Obama-biden website. Absent that, no prognostication, no confirmation, no nothing.

Ridge, or Lieberman, would've made a difference. I think a number of moderate Reps would've stayed at home and a number of Indies would have been interested in that ticket.

But McCain finally DID NOT take a maverick road (like he did when he went off plan and was shot down; like when he went off and divorced his wife for another woman; like when he helped write McCain-Feingold, etc.). Instead, he played it safe with the base of the Rep party and the good looking woman he picked has become an albatross on the campaign.

McCain made the final decision and in great part because of it, NO ONE has confidence now in his ability to make wise decisions for this country.

His fundamentals of the economy are strong comment certainly exacerbate that opinion of many people.

chris arp   October 24th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

This race would be a virtual tie without Palin on the ticket. I don't think McCain understands how bad he screwed up by picking her.

If he had Ridge or Romney this would be looked at as a respectable ticket by most.

Now it is a joke to anyone that was not already strongly conservative.

MikeH   October 24th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

TOO LATE NOW!

McCain picked a devisive right-wing extremist, without any prior vetting process.

Sarah has violated Alaska ethics law and demonstrated her theo-facist persona when she tried to ban books. She demonstrates her fundamental ignorance of America's Constitutional Democarcy every time she opens her mouth.

Tom Ridge is far less scary to me than Sarah, but I think Pawlenty would have been a much better choice for McCain.

Tricia   October 24th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

It does not matter. People want change and not the same. When people are faced with a crisis, they do cling to whatever comforts them, and this may be guns, etc… McCain let it go!!!!, You picked the wrong woman, but you can't leave her and marry Cindy, deal with it

BM   October 24th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

McCain stills sees Palin as the one he should have chosen. He is an idiot!
The woman who claims she was attacked and carved by a blavk man should be charged with filing a false charge. Ridge would of course have been a wiser choice. Palin. . . let's see. . . legislative declaration she abused her power as governor and broke a state ethics law. . . can't recall what newspapers she reads. . . sounds like a hillbilly on the campaign trail. . . spends taxpayer dollars to cart all her kids around on political jaunts. . . didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was. . . contradicts her running mate repeatedly. . . denies labeling people (with terms such as "feminist") but labels some of us as Pro-American over others. . . I'm no pundit but she deserves a "hammering" by informed voters.

Bob B   October 24th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 24th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

If Ridge or some other more informed and capable Republican were on the ticket instead of Palin, then I think it would be a much different and more positive picture for McCain right now. Indeed, one of the main reasons I am not supporting McCain is because I simply do not think that Palin is qualified or capable of getting qualifed to become President, which is the primary qualification for the Vice President.

Gail AL.   October 24th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I would think Tom Ridge was way down on the short list of MCcain. When people really stop and think, they know the best man, and it's not Obama. Obama will spread the wealth around alright, we keep 41.7% of each dollar that we work for, and Obama gives it to someone that doesn't work, What's fair about that. America deserves better, people are hard working, and want to keep all they can to make ends meet. Sounds like socialism to me. By the way, where's Michelle I guess they have her back in the closet, until their in the whitehouse. Her big mouth has helped, MCcain very much, I guess they think she's hepled enough. Michelle is not First Lady material, listened to Wright to long. She is full of hate, so that means Obama shares her views, the black elite, wont lift a finger to help blacks, they are really going to get fooled.

you too can buy an election   October 24th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

The only reason that 95% + of people benifit from Obama's plan is because over 35% do not pay taxes and will get a free check for doing nothing. So he is in essence buying the presidency by getting all these people to vote in order to get the free money.

It is a smart winning strategy, however it is not right and I am shocked not 1 person in the media is calling him out on it (that I have heard of anyway)

Doesn't matter who is on the ticket….so long as John Bush, err, I mean McCain is on it. The man has no honor and knows no shame. He is a dispicable person that has fought against the american dream for his entire 26 years in the senate. He likes to talk about his experience, but everything he touches becomes a BAD experience.

So I'll take his advice, and judge him on his experience….he's BAD, bad, corrupt, incompetent, selfish, lacks judgement, is against veterans and likes to see peoples jobs shipped over seas. He's rotten to the core and should crawl under a rock and simply fade away!

Winnie Hussein . . . in Montana   October 24th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

No, Mr. Ridge, the reason Palin has been a drag on the McCain ticket is because she is nothing but an empty, pretty box. She is vicious and untrustworthy. She appears to be a terrible mother, the way she is using her children as political pawns. She can't even define "precondition" as applied to diplomacy. In short, Mr. Ridge, she is an idiot.

McCain is also a drag on McCain's campaign. Allowing the smears and outright lies to continue, having led a less than honorable life, he is not worthy, nor does he deserve, so serve as Commander-in-Chief of our nation.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   October 24th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

And these are comments from the guy who wanted everyone to "duct tape" their homes after 9-11? I think Ridge or Romney would definitely been better choices than Palin as a "running" mate (or is it more like a "running for 2012 mate). At least both Ridge and Romney ran states with larger populations and budgets, but just seem to not quite have what America needs now.

I think McCain is trying to win Pennsylvania AVENUE, not the state of Pennsylvania.

But if McCain is pouring all his resources in PA and then Election Night comes and…uh-oh, Obama wins Virginia (and possibly North Carolina), then McCain is in big trouble, because Virginia and NC were states McCain was supposed to defend, and he hasn't been in NC much because…he wants to win PA.

McCain should also be campaigning in OH and FL, since he wants to defend those states from going blue. But again, either one goes blue, esp. FL, PA won't make a difference.

I'm from PA, and I'm not sure which part of PA that McCain is visiting, but a good 2/3 of the state is voting Democrat and Obama is up by 9 to 12 points in many state polls. You don't campaign in a state where the majority of voters will be voting Democrat. Oh, and yes, I am voting for Obama, thank you very much.

Finally:

1980 Election: Reagan 489, Carter 49
2008 Election: Obama 489, McCain 49

Chris   October 24th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

If McCain doesn't win PA, he doesn't win the White House? Tell that to Bush! He won twice without PA. However, the way things are shaping up in the batttleground states, especially NC where I live, winning PA may not be enough for McCain.

He's right in one sense; she has been hammered by the pundits, but also by the American people. Everytime she tries to make a cohesive sentence, she shows that she's more illerate than most Americans and we, the people, are tired of illerate people running our government. Whether Palin has been a drag on his ticket is yet to be seen. Most of this has been brought on by McCain, himself. He constantly lies, which is the old way of doing politics; he voted with Bush, who he now says has been doing it all wrong, over 90% of the time and he broke his pledge to run a clean campaign. Wow, what a pair these two make.

Gracie   October 24th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

The McCain-Palin SENIOR staffers already see the clear writing on the wall. If, Sen. Obama wins PA or Indiana, it's OVER for the McCain camp.

John McCain is more than likely kicking himself silly for picking Sarah Palin and hiring all those BUSH CRONIES to run his smear, fear and racial baiting campaign. When you lay with DOGS you get fleas!!!

Even if he wins PA he won't win the White House. He is behind in too many other battle ground states. He has to win all the battle ground states to win and he is running behind. Once the truth about Palin comes out and the truth about her connections to theAIP she will be a reall drag on his race

The original republican mistake was to pander to the religious right and other arch conservatives. With that, they lost the northeast and other parts of the country who view the world from a "Rockefeller Republican (read "Scranton" in Pennsylvania, even "Spector") perspective.

I am such a "recovering" Republican raised in Montgomery County, PA (near Philadelphia).

The Republicans still hope to win the presidency, but by painting Barack Obama all the unattractive colors they can find. They are losing friends, turning voters away, and doing former northeast republicans, who still strongly believe in a properly regulated ("refereed") market economy, no favors.

The Repubs are making sure their dirty tactics go unnoticed. Just think of all the time we will have on election night to sit back and watch the returns, instead of standing in a long line waiting to vote. We stand in line at the grocery store, to buy the latest gadget that comes out around Christmas, and to buy our children the latest new toy or sneakers, so I know we can stand in line to vote early. Go vote!

Something that keeps bothering me, I keep hearing how Obama is so inexperienced, he doesn't have any Business or Executive experience and Palin is Govenor of a State so she is experienced. Well guess what, McCain doesn't have any Business or Executive experience either and Palin is Governor of a state with a population no bigger than Baltimore MD. Obama graduated from Harvard magna cum laude – with great honours – and was elected president of the Harvard Law Review, responsible for editing US jurisprudence's most prestigious publication. Oh yes, McCain's graduation rank? 894 out of 899. Sarah Palin attended six colleges in six years and her GPA is unreleased. One other thing, being a POW is not experience to be the POTUS. It's scary, America. It's truely scary.

I feel very much for Senator John McCain. You disappointed me and my family members. I hope you will explain the real reasons of choosing Sarah Palin one day knowing very well that she is grossly not qualify to be VP of the United States of America.

Look out for the latest on the Ashley Todd story in PA – she told police she was mugged at an ATM by a big, black, scary Obama supporter!!! They have scrutinized her story and bank video; and, it looks like a fabrication. The question is, who put her up to pulling this despicable stunt?

Gail AL.   October 24th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I think they should put John Murtha on the campaign trail with MCcain. Then MCcain would win PA. Murtha's comments are going to lose Obama the election. Palin: Proof that McCain is a "maverick." Do you really think the Republican Party told him to pick the most misinformed, poorly educated, narrow-minded religious zealot he could find as his running mate? ha…he sure showed them who's boss!

Ron from Baltimore   October 24th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Gov Ridge has been right on the money on almost all matters. Let's try to forget his embracing of the "terror alert threat warning color code."

What he says about PA being critical to a McCain win also holds, unfortunately for that Senator, is true about FL, MI, CO, and several other swing states. Ridge and others have been signaling to McCain for weeks now to drop the negative-heavy rhetoric; neither McCain nor Palin, nor most of their surrogates, have gotten the message.

GEN Powell spoke for many, many Republicans last Sunday on Meet the Press. Powell laid out a heart-felt, coherent and measured set of circumstances and messages himself in which McCain and Palin have refused to abide by rules of common decency and fair play. In fact, he went so far as to brand them as divisive and really as aiding no one better than our known enemies.

It is only a matter of time before Ridge is on the same page as Powell and others, and we do not blame these Americans, not at this point and not concerning the McCain campaign. We would all like to see the old McCain back at it, but he has crossed over the line too often and too far.

Jackie in Dallas   October 24th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Another case of Republican sour grapes. Ridge sounds as if he was entitled to be on the ticket. NOONE is "entitled" to run and win an election. It is possible that Ridge could have delivered PA, but not guaranteed. What skeletons does HE have hiding?

To me, that is McCain's problem…he thinks he's entitled to win, therefore anything that doesn't support him in his goal is un-American or unpatriotic. Sorry, Johnnie boy, but sitting on the flightdeck didn't "test" your executive decision making ability — all you needed to do was follow orders. Now the rest of us who were practicing "duck and cover" in our schoolrooms without panicking while you out on that deck WERE tested. Your "test" was selecting your running mate … and in that test you failed when you selected one of the most incompetent people in politics. Your next test was the manner in which you campaigned; another test you failed. Even after swearing not to run a negative campaign, you have been bashing Obama's character, inciting near-riots because Obama's "not like us", misleading your base that Obama has a shaky birth certificate (regardless of the fact that it has been independently verified that the birth certificate is real and he was BORN in the US — McCain was born in Panama — not even a territory of the US), is a Muslim, is a terrorist….et nauseum. Obama's responses have always been measured, he has at least tried to stay on the issues and seen the need to bring unity to the country instead of dividing it further into Pro-Amercian and Anti-American areas.

I voted today….Obama/Biden.

vic   October 24th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Jack   October 24th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Can John McCain win the White House? Just look at the breaking news on the stock exchange and ask yourself if we need 4 more years of this failed economic policy and you will be lead to the conclusion that John McCain can't be the next president.

The republican trickle down economic theory has been an utter failure around the country and around the world and we desperately need a change.

Some people would suggest that a full Democratic victory wouldn't be healthy for the country but, I contend that a sweeping victory for the democratic party is the only solution to the mess we're in today.

Hip Hip Hurrah   October 24th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

The truth is with McCain's angry-man attitude most leaders rejected to run with him, so he had to make a last choice. McCain does not have mind. McCain might be a fighter, hero, maverick blah blah blah but he does not understand politics. He is not a man who can hold his sanity in adverse situations. Americans have realized that fact.
He was supposed to lose this election anyway but it could have been a tight race, if he used his mind. Right now he is going to have a disastrous defeat.
On the day Saddam was caught he was hiding in a rat hole. George Bush was also hiding in a rat hole and this time the White House on the day of the RNC convention. McCain is building one in Arizona for Nov 4.

Raymond Duke   October 24th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

I think there will be a big suprise in Pennsylvania. I cannot see the people in that state voting for a man who made fun of them and called them names along with their own congressman. Now I know it will not affect the black vote as 97% of them are voting on color alone. But if you are white and you vote a democrat ticket after the names you have been called, all I got to say is that you really do need to be the rust state in reality. Oh by the way CNN I loved the way you did the dirty interview with Palin . I guess a lot of people from CNN have a thrill running up their legs there. I do not watch you anymore and I will predict that in a couple of years your rating will match MSNBC low ratings and your stock might turn into junk stock like the New York Times.

Great going grandpa! You betcha! ;)

Obama picked Biden who has proven to be a big help in Penn. McCain picked Queen Sarah b/c he thought females would vote for a women regardless of their position on issues. I heard a Radio commentator, Savage, say exactly that. What is obvious to all is that Palin is not real bright and lacks a moral foundation. Maybe McCain sincerely believes that all women are idiots.

If the weather gets too cold before the election, Ms Palin will need to buy $150,000. worth of winter clothes so she doesn't freeze her behind in Ohio or Colorado. What has she done for special needs children in Alaska??? Please check , she cut the funding. She should keep her mouth shut, because it always comes back to bit her in the rear end.

Mr. Ridge – just as you couldn't deliver in your job in Washington, you will NOT be able to deliver your state for McCain. YOU are part of the problem so it's not like you are high on people's "trust" list.

David in Illinois   October 24th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Pennsylvanians should ask McCain why he voted 90% of the time with the Bush Administratoin as the economy became unhinged during the GOP's 8-year reign in the White House, and in Congress for most of those years.
Also, Pennsylvanians should be DEMANDING to know the details of the relationship between G. Gordon Liddy, Watergate-era convicted criminal and domestic terrorist who STILL supports attacks on our law enforcement officers! Compared to this guy, Ayers is nothing!!
Barack Obama HAS been tested. Don't pay attention to Joe Biden's overstated comments. Think about Obama's judgment on the Iraq war, on the economy, on issues of race have shown he's as ready as any president can be to handle America's business, whatever that may be.

AJ   October 24th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I am not a fan of McCain but Murtha's comments are nothing but the Obama camp's attempt to play on white guilt. Obama and his supporters keep playing the race card while denying it and then trying to portray their opponents as bringing race into the election. They did it to Senator Clinton and they are now doing it to Senator McCain. This is one of the reasons that I could not cast my vote for president this cycle. I have always cast my vote for a Democrat but can't do it this time. I hope Obama surprises me but am not counting on it. I think Obama and the democratically controlled congress will do further damage to our nation. Why did our country not learn after Bush and nominate two worthy candidates?

Frank G   October 24th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Someone explain to me how a jet fighter pilot on a ship during the Cuban Missle Crisis has been "tested" in geo-political international relationships.

When you have nothing to say you say anything. The McCain/Palin ticket is a horrific representation of one of our major American political parties. Reading off of note cards, winking and unbecoming personal attack behavior is not going to do it.

Decency is apparently not fundamental to the fundamentalists; apparently McCain does not care what his legacy shall be after the Election. Sad.

Somehow, the "Etch A Sketch" toy keeps coming to mind whenever the McCain/Palin ticket spout off their nonsense irrespective of the subject matter.

Unemployment has been consistently rising to record highs and the only thing that's been keeping pace, along with inflation, are CEO bonuses! trickle down is a FRAUD, it is more of the same, it is a bankrupt ideology!

Phil Newton in Murphy, Oregon   October 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Ridge is right.

But he wasn't picked. Palin was.

And McCain is going to lose.

He would have, anyway, but perhaps not as badly.

Sam Benegal   October 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Thanks to Gov. Tom Ridge. He is an honarble man.
Thanks for his honest prediction. McCain is going to loose because he is not going to carry Pennsylvania….

I wish McCain start runing a honorable campaign at this late so the history will judge him differently… Unfortunately he choose otherwise…

M.A. Dashell   October 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

And what color would that represent??

LIP   October 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Delusional!
Biden will sink that Obama ship with or without Pennsylvania and they will both go down together.
Better for America anyway…if Obama got the Presidency, he would forget about the $250k barrier for tax increases and lower it to $100k with some lame excuse and then they will take (steal) away our 401k and give it all to the Social Security bank and then they will bring back Welfare for all those lazy good for nothing people that think they are entitled to everything without doing a lick of work.
More of Jimmy Carter served to us via Obama with 20% interest rates that will finish off America for sure.

To Scott from Atlanta…
Maybe it wasn't a B scratched in her face, as she refused medical treatment. Maybe it was an 8… for the number of legs (octopus) it had to take to hold her down, while this was being "carved". Maybe it was an 8 for the last number of years of all failed policies. Perhaps an 8 is indicating how many more years we'll be in Iraq if McBomb gets in.

The best part is it's a load of moose dung. I still havent seen any pictures of this… "carving". Another Joe the Plumber plant… she wants CNN to camp out on her lawn as well and will stop at nothing to get the attention!
So pitiful it's come to this…

Yea, Obama will lead us to world unrest. Every crackpot dictator will test his weakness. A President can only set policies that change the outcome of the economy but most of all he is our comander and chief that helps keep our freedom and security. The man does not want to give the goverment back to the people, he wants the goverment to take care of the people. Not a good place to be. The next four years will be very scary indeed.

Gil   October 24th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

People should really wake up to reality. The truth is that I am one of those who would have fallen under Obama's taxation.Last year, as a small business man, I went above that number and I was proud and happy to pay that tax (which was more than twice what Palin and her husband paid in two years). This year the people who patronized my business and helped raise that money can't afford it anymore.I will rather pay a million dollars in taxes than pay no tax and have no business.

Any way I have already voted for Obama in this early voting.

OKAY DEMOS,

I KNOW THAT MCCAIN-PALIN HAVE MADE US SIC, BUT LETS STOP THE NAME CALLING! LETS BE RESPECTFUL TO THE SENATOR AND HIS VP PICK. LETS NOT DROOP DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL…YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? I'VE NOTICED TO MUCH ANGER AND HATE THINGS SAID ABOUT THE REPUB CANDIDATES: JUST TO LIST A FEW OF THE HATEFUL NAMES THAT I'VE ENCOUNTERED RIGHT HERE THAT WE NEED TO GET RID OF:

MCSAME, MCLAME, MCBUSH, SENILE, CARBOU BARBIE, FALIN.

I KNOW THERE'S PROBABLY A BUNCH MORE NOT LISTED BUT YOU GET THE PICTURE?

I don't know how Reps like Murtha would say such dumb things? I mean, don't they understand that this is an election year and everything they say is under scrutiny? Maybe he said it purposely just to draw some attention? I don't know how these reps…our leaders…could misspeak so much? Now, its sad when people would attribute this to Obama just because Murtha supports Obama? He should take rap for his own idiotic comments!

Barry   October 24th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Tom, I'm not a pundit. Palin truly is an idiot…and McCain is an even bigger one for choosing her.

JJ   October 24th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Comment from Tom Ridge :
McCain "had several good choices and I was one of them."
But he said the Palin selection was a "typical, bold McCain-like choice,"
Kinda like locking the stable door AFTER the horse has bolted.

Ridge might have been a better choice for McCain. but just as lousy a choice for the country.

Emma, San Jose, CA   October 24th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

This is just not a GOP year, Ridge or no Ridge. When McCain once talked about how wonderful Hillary was, we all knew she would be crucified by him if she were the Democratic nominee.

Ridge is right, had he been on the ticket it might ahve made a difference, and he might have made McCain not go negative.
I live in PA,,,and I am sick and tired of all the ads on tv and radio by mcCain and the repubs…many of the claims have been disproven or are partil comments made. These insult my intelligence that you can take part of a statement and use it,,,,
By the way…someone please tell me how Mccain has been tested and what executive experience he has? I do nto see that he is any different than Obama in this regard..other than 30 years in the senate…

ralph   October 24th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Barring any big surprise I do not see how McCain can win at this point. He is doing what he should have done several months ago. He is now firing up the base when he should be reaching out to moderates right now.

Ken in Dallas   October 24th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Palin was chosen to pander to the radical right-wing of the Republican party, the Hagees and Dobsons who seek church dominion over the State. There was nothing bold about it.

John McCain lacks the ability to be a successful president. He's impulsive, angry, and not all that bright. He mistakes dogma for strategy, no longer seems to have the capacity to learn, and would make decisions as bad as the ones Bush has made. He would be an unmitigated disaster as chief executive.

I don't think McCain can win PA either. I really don't think he can steal the lead from Obama in any of the swing states. Judging from the comments I've been seeing on these blogs from people IN the swing states I think Obama's lead will continue to grow in the remaining eleven days.

Now if I could just get the message across to others in my own state of Georgia!!!!!!

As a lifelong Pennsylvanian, I completely agree with Obama's statement about rural Pennsylvanian's being bitter and hanging on to their bibles and guns. Like Carville said…"Pennsylvania is Philly and Pittsburgh with Alabama in the middle." I know, because I have lived in both Philly and very rural upstate PA. What a difference.

McCain and Caribou Barbie will not win my state.

I live in PA and I just voted for BO today. McCain does not stand a chance here.

Georgia Gal   October 24th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Even if Obama loses Pennsylvania, McCain would still have to win almost every other tossup state still on the table to win the election. Worse case scenario for Obama is that if he were to lose Pennsylvania he would need no more than 2 of the remaining 6 tossup states to win it and in most cases he could win it with only winning 1 of those states.

I think it wouold have been a serious battle if Ridge had been on the ticket.

Not because the Republican platform would have had a position that I could vote for, but at least the Republican campaign would not have become the negative smear ticket that it is.

Oh yeah, the VP position would not have become a joke either.

I can't remember even thiinking Dan Quayle was this detrimental to the ticket, or that he was this stupid.

Too bad Mr. Ridge – I guess we'll never really know.

barbara miller   October 24th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Tom Ridge…I cannot believe he is doing the robo-calling for McCain!
Zero respect now for this former Director of Homeland Security throwing up these yellow to red lights to scare Americans. Not only will it not work, but I think he can probably kiss away any thoughts of politics in his future. This was the lowest.

Obamafied Cheesehead   October 24th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

A win in PA or not, McCain has spent the last coins of his reputation for principle and sound judgment to pacify the limitless demands and narrow vision of the far-right wing. His righteous fury at being driven out of the 2000 primaries on a racist tide aimed at his adopted daughter has been replaced by a zealous embrace of those same win-at-all-costs tactics and tacticians.

Kentucky   October 24th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

McCain won't win the White House whether he gets PA or not. Come November 4th, maybe then he'll realize no one wants or likes him. I'm sure he'll try to get them to recount the votes and drag it on forever. He seems like a sore loser and you can tell with his hate speeches which are always about Obama instead of the US as a whole. Did I just hear Palin say they would balance the budget by the end of their first term??? Please. She obviously doesn't know the first thing about budget balancing. You know if there's money to be spent, she's going out to get her hair done.

Kate   October 24th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

By the by there are rednecks in PA. I am from a very redneck County.
Pennsylvanian don't get upset about what was said… My daughter ex-boyfriend has said that years ago, he is from MA…

Dude, Shes been hammered by everyone!
Not a day goes by withough hearing something outrageous come out of Palins mouth.
Just yesterday she said she didnt know if she could "use the word ‘terrorist’ " when talking about people who bombed abortion clinics.
This lady is crazy! the "dynamics would be different" with Ridge or probably any other Republican on the ticket beside Palin is exactly right.
John McCain lost the plot when he chose Palin.

Papasan in Arizona   October 24th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

McCain's first Executive decision was to pick an un-vetted, totally clueless idiot for a VP, a racist bigot, has no idea what Americans need in the National crisis we face. Great going McCain!

Chut Pata   October 24th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Hillary was also not selected as VP despite her wish. That did not stop her from working for Obama. If Ridge could win PA for McCain and he is not doing that, he is a traitor to the party and does not deserve and respect.

Ridge is in the long list of neo-cons that made me leave party (Sarah Palin just joined), despite my liking for McCain. I now vote and support Obama.

The woman who claims to have been attacked by an Obama supporter has a backwards "B" carved on her face. Emphasis on the word "Backwards" (Kinda like an idiot trying to carve the letter "B" in their face while looking in a mirror huh???

It sure is mighty neat for someone who was being pinned down by a black man, and carved on with a "dull" knife… She didn't try to turn her head or anything??? Or was he holding her down, both of her hands, her neck (to keep from swiveling) and her face to keep her still. He must have had 8 arms…lol

What a farce…

JD in Moraga   October 24th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

It's certainly a "typical" McCain choice – off the cuff, with no consideration of the consequences. And Palin hasn't been "hammered by the pundits" – in her own words, "I've been at this – what? – 5 weeks now?" So of course she's going to be questioned…especially when she can't talk about issues and has been found guilty of ethics code violations…the list goes on…

Maybe McCain would have been better to choose you, Ridge…but that's spilled milk.

spotlope   October 24th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I think the problem most people have with the selection of Palin is precisely that it *is* a typical McCain-like choice. It speaks reams about his ready-shoot-aim mentality.
