'Finish the race before starting the victory lap,' McCain says

Sen. McCain warned Sen. Obama not to get too far ahead of himself during a campaign event Saturday.
Sen. McCain warned Sen. Obama not to get too far ahead of himself during a campaign event Saturday.

(CNN) - Senator John McCain attacked Sen. Barack Obama for having his inaugural address ready to go and said that Obama’s presidential preparations will be proven premature at a rally in Mesilla, Arizona on Saturday.

“We just learned from a newspaper today that Senator Obama’s inaugural address is already written.”

“You know? I’m not making it up. I’m not making it up. I’m not making it up. An awful lot of voters are still undecided, but he’s decided for them that well, why wait? It’s time to move forward with his first inaugural address,” McCain said.

“My friends, when I pull this thing, I have a request for my opponent. I want him to save that manuscript of his inaugural address, and donate it to the Smithsonian. And they can put it right next to the Chicago paper that said Dewey Defeats Truman,” he said in reference to the 1948 Chicago Tribune headline incorrectly proclaiming Dewey the winner of that presidential election.

“There’s 10 days left in this election, maybe Barack Obama will have his first state of the union address ready before you head to the polls. You know, I guess I’m just a little old fashioned about these things. I prefer to let the voters weigh in before presuming the outcome. What America needs now is someone who will finish the race before starting the victory lap.”

McCain was referring to a New York Times article published Saturday that said John Podesta (who leads Senator Obama's transition team) "has been mapping out the transition so systematically that he has already written a draft Inaugural Address for Mr. Obama, which he published this summer in a book called ‘The Power of Progress’.”

Minutes after the Republican presidential candidate finished his speech, an Obama aide clarified that the address was in a book John Podesta wrote before Obama was the nominee and was written for a generic Democratic president.

In another response, Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton denied McCain's claim and linked him to a very unpopular Republican president.

“While this charge is completely false and there is no draft of an inaugural address for Senator Obama, the last thing we need is a candidate like John McCain who just plans on re-reading George Bush’s,” Burton said.

  3. annie - never again a dem.

That is very good advice for obama, cnn, msnbc and all those cohorts in crime – obama even stepped on mayor daly's toes to pick a less expensive venue for his coming out party. It will be the beginning of the end of our great country if the biased news media backed corrupt person wins this election. ayres still running around wearing t-shirt with red star. I pray everyday that God does not let this creature obama win!

OK McCain- just what reliable source do you have?

Seems like you are making things up as you go along. No one should rely on vague "newspaper reports" as being authentic. Name your sources.

Mr Obama is more likely focused his attention on the job ahead – the economy, the world picture and bringing people together.

Its a shame Mr McCain is trapped into attacks while offering nothing on his own.

Palin can see Russia from Alaska and this qualifies as foreign policy experience and thus qualifies her to be President, good grief Charlie Brown.

Joe Lieberman said it thank god Palin will not be President on day one IF McCain wins. I say thank God this has turned into a very distant possibility.

Maybe if McCain would devote more time to his Campaign than to Obama's his poll number might rise! I think he has an Obama Obsession! He needs to get back to the American Depression!

After reading a series of your articles I must come to the conclusion that the "Journalists" working for CNN have already made their choice for the presidency! I have not read one article to date that finds any fault with Mr. Obama. He must be the most perfect candidate to ever enter politics. Amazing, since my reading and research has led me to discover that this candidate is part of the dirtiest "political " machine in the country today. Perhaps if a few of your reporters and news anchors actually spent time doing unbiased investigation things would not appear so rosy for the Obama camp. Imagine that if you can, honest reporting of the facts!

    Chuma-
That's because "Usain" rhymes with "Hussein". John McCain and his "patriots" get people confused when they have similar names. Unfortunate that a terrorist got the gold, huh?

wow.. the McSame campaign is coming undone. It's surprising how MsSame can make the argument for experience when, he has far more experience in running campaigns and still failing, and failing miserably.
Experience means nothing if you're not competent, and McSame is incompetent.

If you think of this objectively, McCain is not qualified to run the small business Joe the plumber wants to buy.

Vote Early, Vote Obama and Vote for a great future for all Americans.

What a pitiful old man his campaign has been based on lies and slander with no platform and irratic and irrational behaviour from McCain himself. Look at him wandering around the stage completely befuddled and disoriented.

Anyone voting for this shell of a man has to have a death wish as there hasn't been anything sensible coming from either him or his cohorts since this election began.

    Sick, sick and sad.

Mr. McCain, I am active duty and I have had great respect for you in the past. Please, for the sake of God, shut up now and go out with a whimper. At least don't screw up what is left of your legacy. You and your brother can take a chill pill and just settle down now. It's over...my friend.

Why did McCain spend all his time talking about whether Obama has written his speech or not. I would think you should have something like that ready whether you win or not. McCain spent all that time babbling about the speech, why didn't he tell his crowd what he would do for them??? Guess he doesn't know.

OMG Johnny Boy, don't you have anything better to talk about? Like an economic plan, how about an energy plan beyond "Drill Baby, Drill"

How about a plan for education? Besides saying that "we can't have a plan for "Every Interest Group""

You getting the point Johnny? America wnats, needs to here specifics, not vagaries. And certainly not the misguided personal attacks that have become the hallmark of your campaign.

  25. No Hillary = No Obama

Obama's pomposity and arrogance has reached a new high, although it is consistent with his other grandiose behaviors. It is now being reported that he has already written "his" inaugural address!!!! This is very consistent with his parading around Europe as if he had actually accomplished something; his placing a Presidential seal on a lecturn and talking as if President; his football stadium cornonation complete with Roman columns; his reneging on accepting public finance because he realized that the golden goose will buy him the White House. Really, this is beyond the pale. Do we really need another narcissist occupying the Oval Office – disgusting.
