Gov. Palin said Saturday that Sen. Obama has a big government agenda.
Gov. Palin said Saturday that Sen. Obama has a big government agenda.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (CNN) — Campaigning Saturday in Iowa, a state where polls show Barack Obama enjoying a healthy lead just 10 days before the election, Sarah Palin warned that putting Obama in the White House along with Democrats running both chambers of Congress will turn the country into a nanny state.

Palin cautioned Iowans that under Obama’s “big government agenda,” their income, property and investments would be “shared with everybody else.” She labeled Obama’s plan to provide tax credits to lower and middle-income wage-earners “the philosophy of government taking more, which is a misuse of the power to tax.”

“It leads to government moving into the role of taking care of you, and government and politicians and, kind of moving in as the other half of your family to make decisions for you,” she said. “Now they do this in other countries where the people are not free. Government as part of the family, taking care of us, making decisions for us. I don’t know what to think of having in my family Uncle Barney Frank or others to make decisions for me.”

With audience members shouting “socialist!” throughout her speech, the Alaska governor said that time is running out for Americans to realize the danger of a having a Democrat in the White House.

“Are we hearing what he is saying with 10 days to go?,” she asked plaintively. “Are voters hearing what he is saying about his plans for bigger government?”

At the beginning of her remarks, Palin appeared to ad-lib a riff about her much-discussed wardrobe, which has the been the subject of scrutiny since Politico reported last week that the RNC spent $150,000 on clothes for Palin and her family before the Republican National Convention in September.

“Your state is filled with good, hard-working people all loving the outdoors,” she said, “and it was nice and crisp getting off the airplane and coming into the — it reminded me a lot of Alaska, so I put my warm jacket on, and it is my own jacket. It doesn't belong to anybody else."

Palin was introduced by Col. Bud Day, who shared a cell with John McCain in Vietnam and is one of the Arizona senator’s most loyal campaign allies. Day reached back 60 years to invoke the 1948 presidential election, and said that if Harry Truman was able to come back to defeat Thomas Dewey, McCain will be able to do the same against Obama.

Sarah talking about Obama misusing power! That's rich.

Please go back to Alaska and keep an eye on those pesky Russians for us. Come back when they're defeated.

how true, he wants to send people checks that don't pay taxes. Why do my husband and I pay taxes all year, and than have to pay again at the end, i guess it's so people who don't pay their share already can get a bigger free ride. No thanks Mr Obama, keep your welfare state

SW,OHIO   October 25th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Republican or Democrat, doesn't matter as long as the American people are at heart. I have noticed, the Republicans only care about the control of the Whitehouse. This is about so much more. Get in the real world, we have a crisis. I think the Republicans have damaged themselves by being selfish and our current President has left a longlasting BAD impression of Republicans that will not be forgotten for many years to come.

FrankSmith   October 25th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

The rule here is simple– Go and vote early, if your state allows it. I now confess that I voted proudly for the Obama/Biden ticket this afternoon. It comes with such great feeling to vote, it also helps make up for my last vote for Bush/Chaney. I continue to beg God's forgiveness for contributing to the failure of our nation by voting for Bush/Chaney; never will I vote on moral issues again. That is between the individual and his/her God. As a christian, my command from God is simple: "to love my neighbor as myself." God, and only God alone will fight issues of abortion, morality and so on. I know full well that God always chose leaders with Intelligence, such as King Solomon.

Why haven't we heard or read more about the $150,000. spent on Gov. Palin? Is she going to be held accountabe for the clothes, the hotels, meals. and the travel expenses for her family ? What a bunch of crap this election is spreading. I have lost all respect for McCain and Palin.

Texas Trail Kitty   October 25th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Govenor Palin would do better by returning to Alaska and attending to the people there as well as her own family. She would not know a nanny state if it rose up and bite her. Senator Obama only seeks to help the people abandoned by the Republican party and George Bush, he does not want to run anyone's life, or RUIN anyone's life like the present President (think the Hurricane Katrina mess). Is it nanny state to help Americans who are hurting? If so, bring it on! I prefer a so-called nanny state to a government who takes my money and ignores my needs!

I cant believe anybody would take anything she says seriously. She is saying its dangerous to put a Democrat in the WH. This coming from a person who cant describe what the Bush Doctrine is, or couldnt describe what a precondition was. Also, she keeps calling Obama a socialist. Well, didnt she tax the oil companies in Alaska so she could cut a check to all the citizens of Alaska. Isnt that socialism. I doubt she even knows what socialism is. I mean if its dangerous to put Obama in the WH, then it is down right criminal to put Palin in the WH.

I suppose a woman who doesn't raise her children would have a lot of experience in knowing Nannies. Of course, not very good ones – her 17 year old IS pregnant.

Tom Brown   October 25th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

A Nanny-State? I think the last few weeks have shown that the banks/financial institutions/international corporations need a nanny to hold the greed down a notch. Obama isn't saying that the PEOPLE need a nanny, it's the CORPORATION that needs the regulation. The Founding Fathers had a healthy disrespect for the formation of corporations. They had wisdom that maybe we should respect. The corporation has been made into an entity that has all the rights and benefits of an individual, but none of the responsibility.

THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE. (Change we must as surely time does, changes call the course. YES! (We Can!))

Maddie, Hartford, Ct.   October 25th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Sara Palin is out for Sara Palin. Her children don't even appear to be a priority…sad, little neglected faces sitting behind a mother who has evidently put her own needs and wishes above anyone elses. Should we believe she really cares right now how John McCain fares through this whole process?

Joe   October 25th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Yeah, 10 days left and all we hear from you is more fearmongering, still no good ideas. Greed and self-interest got this country into the mess it's in and you scoff at ideas that will require sacrifice from everyone. Aren't conservatives supposed to be about restraint? Moral restraint, fiscal restraint? Nope, I guess it's about gimme, gimme, gimme mine and screw everyone else.

Go buy a few more new outfits on the GOP's dime before they cut off your wardrobe allowance. And then go back to your $500,000 dreamhome that you used your position of power to build on what used to be a pristine lake.

Yeah, we want a phony "regular hockey mom" like you in charge instead. Sure we do.

pawstiv1   October 25th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

The Republican tactic of telling outrageous lies with no worry of consequence is full blown with this story. They know this is not the truth, but don't care…..if one person in the crowd believes it, then they figure the lie is worth it….more will hear the lie than will hear the retraction if it ever comes. How sad

Larry   October 25th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

NO I don't think people ARE listening–they are to busy running around with their hands out—they all want something for nothing–like freedom.

June W   October 25th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

If "spreading the wealth" is such a bad idea why did you let the RNC spend $150.000 on a wardrobe to make you look more like a "hockey Mom"? You certainly didn't mind their wealth being spread. If being a "nanny state" means that children will be covered by health care, what's wrong with that? As the mother of a special needs child of my own I uderstand the need for more govenment intervention to ensure that all children are given RIGHTS not PRIVILEDGES. Funny how every election season the Republicans suddenly care about our children. Mrs Palin, YOU only care for OUR children UNTIL they are born.

pastthis   October 25th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

What are you saying Palin? Democrats are not Americans? And this from a woman who supports succession of Alaska from America, friends with a person who hates America and it's constitution. GIVE ME A BREAK! Unlike you, my brain is not stuck on stupid.

Look you fake christian, when asked what you read, you couldn't even say you read the bible. If you did, you would realize that you have broken the two supreme commandments along with others. Sarah Palin is a liar. To say that Barack Obama wants people's "income, property and investments shared with everybody else" is a bald-faced outright and outrageous lie. Her comment is particularly offensive after the Republicans have spent the last eight years sharing MY wealth with the richest people and corporations in America. She should be ashamed of herself — if she had any shame at all that is. Disgusting.

Enough of the Insanity   October 25th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I wonder if Sarah Palin discusses with her supporters how she is about as guilty of socialism as any Dem she labels a socialist? She brags about turning down the bridge to no where because Alaska doesn't need big nasty gubmint to help them build a bridge..I don't see where she returned that money. Where did it go? She also brags about taking on big oil in Alaska by taxing their profits and giving it to the people with a 2000 dollar a year check.. Smacks of socialism to me. It's one thing to disagree with an opponents ideas of where this country should go, but this woman is the pot calling the kettle black. Even McCain's senior aides are saying she is a rogue and ruining his chances and is only looking out for her future career in politics. Gov Palin needs to go back to Alaska and straighten out her problems she has back there.

Shelli   October 25th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

This woman is a trainwreck..even McCain's aides are sick of her.. I'm still not understanding why her WHOLE family got $150,000 worth of clothes…that's more money than I'll make in 5 years so she can stay "pretty" for everyone..give me a break..Nov 4th can't come and go soon enough…I've already voted for Obama..hopefully everyone else is smart enough to!!!!

"They lie, and lie, and lie and lie and lie, the McCain and Palin show!"
Sang to the theme of Itchy and Scratchy.

So Sarah Palin just has no problem blatantly lying to her supporters over and over and over again. Does she really think the rest of us aren't calling her out on all these bold-face lies?

Your income, property and investments are going to be shared with everyone else? Please! I also love, "Now they do this in other countries where the people are not free." So basically if we elect Obama we are going to lose our freedom. Riiiiiiiiight Sarah. Just keep trying. I hope this woman has a backup plan for her career because her political career is over after Nov 4th.

"time is running out for Americans to realize the danger of a having a Democrat in the White House" We think time is running out to realize the danger of someone in the Alaskan Governor's Office who doesn't follow our Constitution and the laws of our land she took an oath to uphold. How dare you suggest anyone else is a danger? Gov. Palin doesn't even have enough trust in our governing system and laws to have faith in them for solving a personal family dispute let alone the wars and current economic crisis we are in. Instead of working to 'reform the law' in a 'transparent' fashion as she promised, she encouraged her husband to go on a personal vendetta, which is no one time thing since he is in the office more than 50% of the time. Plus, she has lied repeatedly, name-called and distorted facts proven otherwise time and again and ran the most vile, hateful, nasty campaign on record. PLEASE Americans, expect more from our leaders.

First, Republican Bush grew the government by an untold amount after promising less government.

Second, I would rather have government "taking care of me" than government spying on me.

Third, as for telling us what we can and cannot not do…. is not Palin doing just that on women's issues?!? How about religious issues? Isn't she the one who has decided how to tell who is a "real american" and who is "anti-american?"

Her kind of government I can live without.

Norris Hall   October 25th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

While Fashion Diva Sarah Palin would like American hockey moms all over the country to know she's "just like them" and that she "understands that times are tough", NRC disclosure records show that after siphoning off an eyepopping $150,000 of desperately needed campaign contributions for designer clothing, hairstylists and makeup for herself and her kids in the month of September, she is on her way to breaking all spending records for October .

Records just being released for October show that she has blown a whopping $30,000 dollars her hair and makeup alone !!!

It's no wonder Sarah the Fashion Diva is worried about Obama's economic policies.

Obama would make all politicians pay for their own clothes, hair and makeup…just like he does for himself, his wife and the Bidens.

She needs to get a nanny for all them children she got, and a psyc. eval for her daughter who is engaged to a highschool drop out. I saw an interveiw she did with her husband there holding the baby and feeding it. What's that about? If that was his job, why didn't he just stay in the hotel? What professional woman takes her baby and husband to a meeting. It's a 50 year back step for women. Possibly she was using it as a campaign slogan. Even worst, professionals know to keep their family life seperate from their professional life. I always took the attitude (I'm a manager, but my children are grown now) I work because I have children, I don't to have children. Take a good look at this woman, she is ignorant, and she is no lady. I feel sorry for her children and family. The mixed messages she sends are a death sentence. No wonder her daughter was confused about her sexuality and how to handle herself. Her mothers values are so screwed up. America don't let this woman bring her screwed up message to the White House. Let me get this straight. Giving a tax credit to low and middle income voters is "government taking your money". Its getting to the point that in order to understand Palin you have to have an IQ of less than 50. What about all these morons in the crowd who I'm sure are the $250,000 abd ubder crowd chanting socialist because he wants the rich to take on more of the burden to help relieve them. The best thing to come out of this election for Democrats other than Obama winning is Palin becoming the face of the Republican party.

Ron from Baltimore   October 25th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Well, she's really gone off the deep end now. And apparently she still hasn't a clue, nor any of the discipline, as to what it takes to operate at this level. She's not able to give everyone in country an "oil wealth" check every year; even that was going to grow old in time. Her ideas are unmolded, uninformed, a reflection of the sounds bouncing around inside that expensively coiffed head.

Enough, Sarah; _we_ get it. Get lost.

Marie in California   October 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Obama would give us "womb to tomb" care…..a giant government sponsored welfare state. But then, who would be left to pay for it?

Obama says….."spread the wealth around," which means…..

income redistritution, which means….

a Robin Hood government, which means…..

take from the rich and give to the poor, which means…..

socialism.

I'm still having trouble seeing why we should fear Democrats when 8 years under Bill Clinton's leadership led to peace, prosperity, and a budget surplus. Meanwhile, 8 years under Republican George W. Bush's leadership has led to endless prospects of war, rampant inflation, and national debt that is out of control. But we're supposed to fear Republicans instead of Democrats? Only a monster of a Straw Man Argument could convince Americans that almost unanimously believe that our country is headed in the wrong direction that the party that has opposed this wrong direction is the one to fear. I wish more Americans could see through Palin's ridiculous logical fallacy concerning the whole "Socialist" argument.

This from the Bridge to Nowhere gal and the one who hired a lobbyist to get earmarks for her small town … about $4,000 for every man, woman and child?

This from the governor of a state that gives citizens a check every year – and has no taxes?

The government has not been as big as it is right now before, so how is Obama gonna increase the size of it? This lady talks from her rear end. McCain is 72 and would make the oldest president ever, so when he dies we will get this thing…..ugh, please vote Obama.

Iona   October 25th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Didn't just make her first and so far only policy-related speech yesterday about spending $45 billion on education special needs children?

I, and guessing I'm not alone here, will quite happy when Sarah Palin disappears on the national scene after the 4th of November.

If she manages to avoid any more scandals in Alaska, betting she'll put her name around during the 2012 Republican primaries but there is no way she'll win the first couple states like New Hampshire or South Carolina or Michigan and besides you has no appeal to urban and well-educated Republicans and while she could run without their support, she can't run without the donations.

Then finally be good ridden of her and this "Vote for the candidate you'd want to have a beer with" mentality.

She needs to be careful when talking about a nanny state. She's the one who would need both a political nanny to watch over her and a nanny to take care of all her kids that would be running around the vice presidents home.

This woman would do well in a real socialist, communist or tyranical government where one can spew inflamatory rage all they want.

Time for change!!!

Gee, Mrs. Palin, I see it the other way around–you want to impose your personal beliefs and place restrictions on any number of issues Americans face (abortion, gay rights, stem cell research, etc.). That would make you the nanny, wouldn't it?

Jeremy   October 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Alaska has the most lucrative social program in the country–they take taxes from the oil companies and redistribute it to the citizens in the form of rebate checks for thousands of dollars. That policy is one of the key reasons Palin has been so popular there.

Palin is such a hypocrite. She is like Bush–she doesn't see her own inconsistency.

I don't understand why no one is pressing her to explain away her tax hike that she levied against "big oil" in Alaska, then turned around & used that revenue to give a "rebate" to Alaskans. If that isn't "redistribution of wealth" (or- gasp- socialism) I don't know what is. The McCain-Palin campaign is very, VERY proud of this achievement, yet is blind to the hypocritical double-speak in their current misleading rhetoric.

Warning signs that you might be living in a nanny state:

If someone else is buying $150,000 worth of clothes for you, you might be living in a nanny state.

If someone else is paying makeup artist $10,000 a week to do your makeup, you might be living in a nanny state.

If someone else is paying a hairstylist $5,000 a week to style your hair, you might be living in a nanny state.

If Alaska is paying you extra every day you live in your own home, you might be living in a nanny state.

If Alaska is paying for your family's airline tickets and hotel rooms when *you* go on a "business" trip, you might be living in a nanny state.

It seems to me that the last eight years have been like leaving the kids at home alone to fend for them selves while mom and dad go bar hopping.

The Dems and Obama are caring thoughtful Americans who draw direction and strength from men like Franklin D. Roosevelt who was elected President in 1932. When he took office there were 13,000,000 unemployed, and almost every bank was closed. He and America's Democratic Congress enacted sweeping programs to bring recovery to business and agriculture, relief to the unemployed and to those in danger of losing their farms and homes.

Eight more years of bar hopping isn't what our nation needs. Nor do we need Sarah Palin to be our Mommy.

Al-Qaeda is watching the U.S. stock market's downward slide with something akin to jubilation, with its leaders hailing the financial crisis as a vindication of its strategy of crippling America's economy through endless, costly foreign wars against Islamist insurgents.

And at least some of its supporters think Sen. John McCain is the presidential candidate best suited to continue that trend.

"Al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election," said a commentary posted Monday on the extremist Web site al-Hesbah, which is closely linked to the terrorist group. It said the Arizona Republican would continue the "failing march of his predecessor," President Bush.

[Contains correction of grammar in last sentence] What a lying hypocrite! Christ was a socialist and communist by virtue of his example and his teachings, such as "Whatsoever ye do to the least of these, ye do also unto me," then going on to ask if his audience would allow him to go thirsty if he were without drink, to go hungry if he were without food, etc. He also never charged for any of his medical treatments (his healings), an example of socialistic practice, nor for the food he had distributed among the throng at the Sermon on the Mount, an example of communism, of sharing his material goods. Also, he said that it is harder for a rich man to go to heaven than for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle. So are Republicans actually anti-Christians who espouse free-market capitalism while decrying the socialism and communism of the sort that Christ himself practiced?

I will vote for the person I believe will do the best job; and not because of race, age or gender. The fear that the Republicans are trying to spread is appalling.

I worked for a national title company that opened offices in three countries so that the title work could be performed by folks in other countries via computers. I personally sent work to the office in India for typing or generating title commitments. And there are counties in this country that have all recorded documents on line, thus everything is available on computer. So with training, a title search can be performed offshore. That affects anyone when obtaining a home mortgage, as a mortgage company or bank almost always requires a title search. The jobs that are being shipped overseas has hurt this nation. No jobs, no taxes.

I heard Palin currently has 4 nannies.

At the beginning of her remarks, Palin appeared to ad-lib a riff about her much-discussed wardrobe, which has the been the subject of scrutiny since Politico reported last week that the RNC spent $150,000 on clothes for Palin and her family before the Republican National Convention in September.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The wardrobe that receipts prove were purchased for her and her family and the campaign says will be donated after the election? If all the clothes they bought her are donated to charity after the campaign (because homeless people need to wear Prada, you know), what would she wear in the White House? Are they not planning to win? The McCain-Palin ticket has changed their story and are now saying that the wardrobe wasn't purchased, that it is being loaned to them, so how are they donating loaned clothes to charity?

As with everything else, their story adapts to best convince their supporters to drink their prune juice, I mean, kool-aid.

Sarah -

You can't win by downing the other guy. You've got to talk up your plans and be able to defend them when questioned. Neither you or John McCain can do that.

I've seen two "interviews" with you recently , Brian Williams on NBC and on on CNN. In both cases, they went soft on you.

They didn't press you when you evaded the questions. Maybe they did this so that you'd continue to talk to them throughout the campaign, I'm not sure.

But what is clear is that your answers were SO WEAK. When you finish answering these journalists, you may think that you've accomplished something but you really haven't and any serious voter that is listening knows that. This election is lost for you and John McCain. Give it up.

Go out with some dignity. It's time to rally Americans behind the next president. You can do that without appearing to totally throw the towel in for Barack Obama … talk about it in general terms.

One Nation … One America … no more divisive rhetoric …

It's is time to turn the page and begin a complete overhaul of the party. A party of the people and for the people. With a deep sense of public service. Country first an not politics. the future of our country is too important and we need both parties (republicans and democrats) to work together, be competent. work and find solutions to our needs : economy, jobs, energy, health care, education, restoring our international image,Irak, Afghanistan, just to mention some….
New leadership, new message, new identity, new approach, new platform……. for the sake of the United States of America.-

A ROSE FROM IOWA   October 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

McCain/Palin/Bush deregulation and favoring big CEOs have all but ruined so many Main Streets and town square areas in Iowa. Get real here. What they have done is immoral and should be illegal. Now that it's time to vote the McCain/Palin/Bush candidates are back sniffing around to get votes. They have taken away so much from us. NO MORE!

Obama is NOT a Socialist. His ideas are great for small town America and big city America. I live 3 blocks from Main Street and relieved that Obama's economic plans are so good for me. Everyone I know will benefit by Obama's presidency.

Somebody get these people a dictionary so they can look up the meaning of the word "socialist." This junk is getting really tiresome.

By the way, isn't our government SUPPOSED to take care of us? I mean, consider what the opposite of "taking care of us" is . . . since Palin seems to think in black-and-white, if it's not one it must be the other, right?

abraxis   October 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Hey, Knuckle Head! Before you go accusing someone of socialistic tendencies, find out what it is first.

By the way, nanny state is what you are doing with your daughter who is pregnant out of wedlock, taking her to wherever you are espousing your empty rhetoric to flat earth people, and spending money on them illegally instead of hiring a nanny to take care of them because you have political aspiration to occupy a position beyond your intellectual pay-grade. No wait, in the republican party you could become president, W did! Never-mind keep doing what you are doing, you are doing the rest of the people a huge favor by keeping out your ilk for the next 20 years.

By the way, please tell us again the role of the vice-president again. I need reinforcement of how intellectually grounded you are NOT!

Brad   October 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Sarah Palin talks about Obama's tax problems with small businesses. She does not understand small businesses. They are not taxed on gross receipts but net, but Sarah does not understand this basic, because she is not bright. Her first legislation is for programs for people with special need children, okay, well this is good but ther are lots of programs for these people but she makes too much money for subsidies so she is going to legislate for her own self. How about legislation for all kids to be covered for medical Sarah, you two bit idiot.

Lauren   October 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I live in Iowa and at least where I live, people are not fooled by Palin, they see her for what she is, unqualified. Iowa helped launch Obama in the primaries and there is a reason that he has a healthy lead here as well!

Early voting has started in Iowa and everyone I know has already cast their vote for Obama! I know I did!

GO OUT AND VOTE!

Hmm, aren't the citizens in Alaska receiving subsidies from the feds? Alaska's seen boom times the entire time she has been governor. I'd like to hear her views on the nanny state if she had come from New Orleans.

governor palin, is that anything like the government moving in and and making a woman's decision about her pregnancy for her, or the government deciding who you can and can't marry?

Aviate   October 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

"The Alaska governor said that time is running out for Americans to realize the danger of a having a Democrat in the White House."

As opposed to what? A Republican? Had one of those for the last eight years–didn't work out so well in case you hadn't noticed. Last Democratic president left us with a healthy economy and budget surpluses. Can't imagine why a majority of Americans would want to go back to that?

maynard hopkins wi   October 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Can Obama be president if he is not born in the U.S.A. This is the question and it seems there are two conflicting reports on where he was born… His grandmother for Kenya claims that he was born there,

Now his half sister who lives in Hawaii claims that he was born there.

Where was Obama born and why does he have duel citizenship papers,, His mother gave up her citizenship to the U.S.A. when she moved back to Kenya at the age of 14. The time that Obama was born. Who is Frank Marshall Davis?

Stenzo   October 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Maybe we need a nanny to SPANK Joe Hedgefund–or a nurse to come in and tend to our wounds. The Republicans want to leave the kids home with knives and poison and let the "marketplace" keep them safe.

me   October 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

And by whom she want that America to be run. By her and by the republicans? They had eight years and look where they brought United States. If they are saying that democrats are the root of the current economic situation why in that eight years didn't do something about it. Instead they acted like world police and stiffed there nose in other country's business. They pumped all the money in the military. Why can't that use that money for something good like health care or creating jobs? And the problem is that they're economic situation is affecting the rest of the world. She will bring doom on us all if McCain will be elected and in some circumstances she will become president.

I think she means she is running out of time to mislead American's into voting for McSame. Let's not forget that the "do nothing congress" of the last 2 years couldn't do anything because of the constant republican filibusters! The republicans try to blame the democrats … but it's the republicans who wouldn't allow changes that were instated the previous 6 years when the republicans controlled both chambers and the presidency. It's time for change, and the only way to get it is to remove the republican resistance that has for the last 2 years prevented any good change!

joebloe   October 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

So maybe Mrs Palin would prefer that the federal government NOT send $1.75 to the citizens of Alaska for every $1.00 they send to the federal government. If she is so against "socialism" I would be happy to not be from a state that gets about $0.80 for every $1.00 sent. Maybe we SHOULD stop subsidizing Alaska and their seccessionist-loving governor.

But you know what, I believe America needs to come together and work as a team! How else can we get out of this gigantic mess WE are in? This country was built on the idea of community and it is time for us all to pull together as a nation to solve our woes.

By the way, I am a real American too!!! Even if Mrs Palin doesn't think so.

That horse is already out of the barn. With the bailout of the biggest banks, insurers and who know's what other corporate giants to come down the pike (perhaps the automakers or airlines) the GOP and the free marketeers can hardly blame anyone else for socialistic policies. The unregulated free market they have championed since Reagan has bankrupted America and damaged economies across the globe. Now, the free market big shots have come hat in hand to the taxpayers to save them. It leaves little doubt just who the socialists really are.

Bowen   October 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I guess I don't understand what a socialist state does different from small and large employers. Don't they take money earned by the employees and give some of it back to the employees and keep the rest for themselves. This is really trickly up. No wonder there are so many unions. Employers seem to do what is necessary to earn the most money. They hire employees when they think they can expand their profits and lay off employees when they want to keep their profits.

bruce snider   October 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

A nanny state would be better than a buisness tyrants state. In the last month as a nation we were railroaded into giving the few the keys to the treasury. We will reap the worlwind for this action. As far as opec is concerned if they don't want to produce 1.5 million baralls of oil to keep the prices up, we should not want to produce 1.5 million bushels of grain to feed them. fair is fair. also we should not produce the oil rig equipment that they want. Lets see if they are smart enough to do it themselves.

Butch   October 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

It ceases to amaze me that intelligent Americans can even consider voting republican after witnessing the lies, deceit, cruelty, and outright stupidity of the campaigns of 2000, 2004 and now 2008 to say nothing of living the last eight years under republican dominance. There are significant reasons why leading republican editorial writers, former members of the Bush administration, and famous republican families are voting for Sen. Obama this year. Hopefully, you are not getting your views only from one tv station, or one newspaper. Contrary to some complainers, the Clinton administration always whined about the mainstream media too. Become informed. Remember, sadly McCain's first 'presidential' judgment call was Sara Palin. God help us!

Matt (Grand Rapids)   October 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Is it safe for our country to keep a Republican in the White House? For the most part, campaigns are a joke because candidates will say anything to get elected. I know it is coming from both sides, but McCain isn't even remotely himself anymore. He has completely lost his moderate/independent base to attract conservatives. I know Obama has said some things to make him seem less liberal, but not nearly as much as Sen. McCain.

Shake up Washington! Vote Obama!

This woman is scary. I'm a Christian, and her affiliations are more in line with terrorism than any religion I've come across. We hear the superficial things, but nothing else. Jose, San Diego   October 25th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Nanny state? This from the coddled prima donna cipher in a campaign that spends more on her makeup and clothing than for political advisors? A very bad Hollywood movie come to life (Princess Caribou Diairies?), this woman runs the ultimate welfare state: awash in oil money (pocketed by the corporations bleeding the place dry), Alaska sucks out of the federal treasury more than it puts in. This is what the end-time folks call "fleecing the beast"; BTW Princess, it isn't socialist to give from your excess to those without. It used to be called Christian. And what the state does with genuine "entitlements" (you pay for Social Security and other benefits in advance) is so meager that it hardly makes a dent in the behemoth military budget (where more than half of our tax dollars currently go).

Monique, Honolulu   October 25th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

It's amazing that in this day and age, after history has shown us the destructive results of fear mongering and hate mongering, that a top level candidate of ANY party would stoop to the kind of empty, scare tactic slander that has come out of the McCain/Palin camp of late. But what's even more disappointing is that there are people, and a good number of them, that are willing to listen and respond to this sort of nonsense. In a time when this country, and indeed the entire world, needs REAL leadership, instead we have the kind of self serving, petty, destructive behavior that Sarah Palin seems to enjoy engaging in. The road to the future is long and winding. God help us if this is the best we have to lead us down that road.

M.Harvie   October 25th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

"Socialism" may be a four letter word to Americans, but, they need to get used to it. The bailout package, McCain's proposal regarding mortgage buybacks, Palin's distribution of oil revenues to Alaskans, are examples of socialist influenced government and political actions. The free market system is an efficient user of resources, but, it is not an efficient ward of a nation's poor, handicapped and disadvantaged. Farm subsidies, housing grants, transportation subsidies, are further examples of socialist oriented programmes. There are many more ingrained examples of socialist tendencies in American society than people are willing to admit.

sandee in Portland   October 25th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

This is funny. She's actually talking about misuse of power. LOL, she's one of the biggest as far as misusing power. After being elected May of Wasilla, she fired those people in power and put her high school friends in those positions. Then, because she's such a great hockey mom, had a hockey arena built on land that didn't even belong to Wasilla. She became Mayor of a city with no debt, then left that city with over $20 million debit all for a hockey rink and a lawsuit.

She continued in that vein when she became Governor doing the same thing….putting her high school friends in positions of power within the State government and abused her political power by trying to get the head of the state troopers to fire her sister's ex-husband. The Queen of the earmarks, she is unethical and has a typical small town attitude and mind.

I am ashamed that my republican party put this woman on the ticket when there were so many other women who were better qualified. She may be looking ahead to 2012, but as a woman, I would never vote for her or her kind of extreme right wing evangelical, small minded politics.

Oh please. It's the Bush administration that's been responsible for the most radical expansion of government power over American citizens since World War Two, through spying, through restricting our ability to seek redress of grievances and through the imperialization of the Presidency. What Palin and McCain have taken to calling the "Nanny State" is a bogeyman. The Democrats' idea is to have government *help* people, not control them. If you think that the government has done right by you over the last 8 years, then stick with the Republicans. If you want a government that can make a positive difference in your life, then go Democratic. Don't buy into the "Nanny State" rhetoric….

The government as being the other half of your family? Incredible stretch. Watching McCain this morning makes me shudder. Can he speak any faster piling more crap on the heap? He will not LOSE in Iraq.
He can't WIN either. The USA was never in the war in Iraq to WIN it. You simply can't. This delusional senior is plain scary. He says he will keep America in Iraq until they WIN. Sounds like the war in Iraq will never be over. Keep throwing good money after bad and you will keep running up the trillions of dollars of debt you claim the Democrats will. What a buffoon.
Drill Baby Drill, well apparently not off the coast of California, based on Arnie's statement.
The market turmoil has stalled and made the big oil companies in Canada pull back on their plans for the oilsands. Sounds like a limited resource will continue to be limited. Can only get more oil out of Alberta if the price per gallon remains over $90 a barrel.

The more I listen to McCain/Palin, the less sense they make.
Truly time for a change.

Tony   October 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

PALIN AND JOE THE PLUMBER ARE A PERFECT MATCH!

BOTH IGNORANT, INCOMPETENT, POWER HUNGRY, DELUSIONAL FOOLS.

Michael watching from Canada   October 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Fact: Any form of taxation spreads wealth.

So McCain's tax policies will also spread the wealth…….

the only difference between McCain and Obama is that…..

McCain wants to spread the wealth primarily to the wealthy.

voter   October 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Is Palin still talking? Palin is advocating for continuing with the same failed polices of deregulation and tax cut for the rich which led to this economic problem to begin with.

Garak   October 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Frankly, I think that America NEEDS a nanny. With the economy all but soiling itself and the American property market sporting not so much a skinned knee as a skinned scalp, doesn't *someone* need to take more responsibility in government? Since McCain would rather deregulate and conveniently drop the hot potato that this crisis has become, I'd feel happier having a nanny tend to it and make it all better. Or try to, anyway.

Palin may cry "Socialist!" for all she's worth, but the truth is, people *want* a regulatory system. Regulations are the bars on the cot that will keep the big, fat babies on Wall Street from breaking out and wrecking the whole house. And yes, that *is* your house we're talking about, Joe the Plumber. Sheesh.

Greenspan's confession the other day was as disturbing as it was hilarious. Didn't see it coming, indeed. What else do you expect when you deregulate like nobody's business? That isn't capitalism, buddy – that's crack. Credit-flavored crack. And you hooked the American economy on it for far too long. We're experiencing the agony of withdrawal now, and only a "nanny" can be trusted to get us through it in one piece.

I'd vote for a nanny, any day.

Steve , Ca   October 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

It just goes to show that the Republicians
are so far out of touch with
American Voters .. What a bounce of Disquisting and Sleazy comments.. It just goes to show they will say anything to get elected

bk   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Yes Obama, Pelosi, and Reid running this country is enough to scare you. Barney Franks and Chris Dodd should be removed from the White House Now! The two crooks. The American people wanted a vote on off shore drilling and Pelosi decided she didn't care what the people wanted she would not bring it to a vote. They went on vacation. If anyone thinks they are going to get energy independent with Obama, Pelosi, and Reid in there I have some swamp land to sell you.

Mook from Canada   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Apparently she doesn't want the election and party advisors telling her what to do either! (can't say I blame her about her party's advisors though….)

JBR   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

We all know what happened to this country when we handed it over to Joe six pack and the religious right for the last 8 years.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Obama '08

Johanna   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

USA would be very far away from those real wellfare countries like Scandinavian ones (Sweden, Denmark) so there is no need to be worried to get even close a "nanny state". Palin's lack of experience and knowledge of foreing countries shows very painfully.

Stu-Florida   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

We all are painfully aware of what her agenda is… her mirror.
More repetitive false claims. She really is a parrot.
Wanna cracker?? No I mean I want to crack her.

Ohioans for Obama   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I thought Palin was against government waste. Isn't $150K for clothing in 2 months a tad excessive?

Matt in North Carolina   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Republican tax policy has effectively shifted wealth from the bottom 80 percent of the population to the top one percent and racked up enormous national debt in the process.
We need to ask whether this redistribution of wealth upward that accelerated over the past eight years has really served the best interest of this country.
It’s pretty sad to see how easy it is to make regular people feel threatened enough to vote against their own economic interests. The McCain/Palin campaign is embarrasingly unethical and dishonest.

david   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Palin says she is against the government making decisions for families, yet she would take away a woman's right to choose and have the government make that decision.

She also says she is against government taking care of people, but she has the government take care of her family, at taxpayer expense, by having the government pay for her family to accompanying her for personal reasons.

YOU CAN'T TAKE THE TRUTH   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

ITS THE BUSH TAX CUTS AND THE MISPLACED WAR THAT BUSTED THE BUDGET RESULTING IN THE NEED TO BALANCE THE BUDGET AND INCREASE TAX

IF YOU DON'T WANT A TAX INCREASE VOTE OBAMA

More Scare Tatics   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Come on Sarah Palin give it a rest. They said the same thing about Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini.

Lisa Brennan   October 25th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Okay, first of all…where to start….Roe vs Wade…okay let's keep government out of that for sure. But we see what privatization has done to our country ,so a nice mixture of it as well as government should be in place for such matters as health care, education, regulaton in such areas where greed and corruption can creep in, etc. Like they do in Denmark or Norway or France….check out their health care etc over there. We could use some of this nanny stuff. OH! the new outfits…..that is a nanny-type fling. OH! and paying for war…..big nanny. Food stamps….another nanny! Bailout~ NANNY! And so glad Palin let us know she was wearing her own coat. At least I think that is what her words meant…cannot be sure with that syntax of her's.

Dan   October 25th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

PALIN PALIN PLAIN!!!
My biggest problem with McCain is PALIN! I am sick sick sick of hearing that she is strong on ENERGY. Why? Because Alaska produces 3% of USA oil and there is a big pipeline project ongoing. What a daft inference to make. Do these people realise that ENERGY does not end with "crude oil"? What does she know about wind, solar, clean coal, nuclear etc! Is Alaska an expert on these too?

ENERGY EXPERT = No
LIE EXPERT = Yes
ATTACK EXPERT = Yes
HOOD WINKER = Yes

Please be wary of how the try to get away with fake qualifications.
Supposed champion for autistic and down syndrome children? She came on TV 2 days ago to attack eamarks for research to find cure for autism. She did not even realise what she was attacking.

Is that who we want a heartbeat away from Presidency. God forbid if 72yr old McCain does not make it through the firsr term.

A VOTE FOR McCAIN IS A SURE VOTE FOR PRESIDENT PALIN
AND THAT IS A DISASTER! I SAY DISASTER!

BE WISE…………………..VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN 08′

Michael in San Diego   October 25th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

The only "nanny state" I'm aware of is Alaska where Gov. Palin presided over the taxation of the oil companies to redistribute wealth to its lucky citizens.

Kiss your political career goodbye caribou barbie!

Nancy   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Her comments are so extreme that no one could ever take them seriously. A nanny state? Oh right, that is exactly what Democrats want! It is so ignorant it is unreal.

Palin is idiot she needs to go back to Alaska stay in the kitchen.

Obama/Biden for America!

The Lady   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

"Trooper Gate", you need to go home. You are just the RNC lapdog, you never talk about the issues all you do is bash Obama. You can not talk about the issues because you do not know anything about them and it has become very obvious.

j   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Scare tactics, that's all it is. I would rather see Obama in the White House, knowing that the mix of Congress can be changed, if they get out of hand, then see McCain, who has no leadership direction other than the same failed policies of his Republican predecessors. McCain has no vision for the future. Obama does and it's one America can live with. If you truly want clean alternative energy to become a reality then vote for Obama. McCain has voted against every alternative energy bill that's been introduced in the Senate. Income tax is a socialist system so no matter who get's elected, the "wealth" will be spread around. With Obama it will benefit the workers of America, with McCain it will benefit the wealthy. Don't be fooled. Vote for Obama.

Dawn   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Please shut this woman up, Hey Palin, for 6 years both Congress and Senate was runned by the Republicans and look where that got us, high gas prices, lost jobs, closing busnesses, faulty goods from China, unsafe trucks coming up from Mexico.

To Gov. Sarah Palin; please read more the the headlines, you just might learn something.

Go Obama/Biden08/12

Boricua4Obama   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Walt   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

I feel sorry for all the people in Alaska. After this is all over they get her back!!

Steve of Florida   October 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Someone should rein her in…she is out of control. Could this person be a heartbeat away from the presidency? What was John McCain thinking when he "selected" her?

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   October 25th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Talk about making decisions for you. She just wants to tell me what I can do with my own body and who I can marry.

And "the danger of having a Democrat in the White House"? Yea, right. Like things were really bad when Bill Clinton was in the White House. All that peace and prosperity was a little hard to handle.

So lets put a Republican in again who has no real ideas and lacks the temperament to put this country back on track.

Obama has a plan. It's not going to be easy because of the huge hole that Bush left us in but he's going to make sure that everyone, not just the rich and powerful, are taken care of. Sounds good to me.

Brian Rich   October 25th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Wow, another lame Rush Limbaugh talking point from Palin. Does she have thoughts or just slogans running through her head like a malfunctioning electronic marquee?

Mook from Canada   October 25th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Is she for real? Hasn't she read the actuall tax plan? These repubs say a one-liner lie, then next thing you know, the are expanding, embellishing, andhypothetically extropolating that same little lie!!! un-Believable!!! lol !! send in the plumber! lol….roflmao

Christiane, Germany   October 25th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

But People , dont get scared , you will make the right Decission.
And People from 70 Countrys in the World would vote for Obama, including Germany.

Deb (New York)   October 25th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

and the alternative…would that be to elect a president and vice president that do not even like each other??? If McCain can not run his campaign why are we to believe he can run this great nation of ours?

Bill, N.M.   October 25th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

CHANTING SOCIALIST? WOW! We have a lot of dumb americans out there. Palin is a danger to the future of the USA

reality   October 25th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

oh please !.. spare us your "superior" analytical skill Gov. Palin. Prove to us you're a capable of understanding complex issues like the tax policies and economic policies, and then we will listen to your take on Obama's tax policies.

You have shown us over and over again, that you're not the smart, deep thinking, leader americans need, and that's notwithstanding your poor English skills (like Bush). I have poor English but even I cringe when I hear you speak.

You're just making yourself look like an idiot by making predictions that require skills far beyond what you have shown us you have.

Jennifer   October 25th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

"and it was nice and crisp getting off the airplane and coming into the — it reminded me a lot of Alaska so I put my warm jacket on, and it is my own jacket. It doesn't belong to anybody else. My own jacket, for once, Alaska."

Does that even make sense? Is she talking to Alaska?

Whoever said the other clothes didn't belong to her? That's the point, isn't it? She was bought clothes she didn't need. I'd have had more respect for her had she borrowed something from somebody else.

sad   October 25th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Whats more dangerous is having a woman who cannot complete a full sentence without sounding like a bumbling fool. Also a woman who is constantly enticing fear and anger in her followers is a disgrace to America. I don't know where this lady gets off thinking that she's some fountain of knowledge and wisdom, but she of all people needs to go sit down somewhere and shut up. Everytime she opens her mouth, I cringe. The moronic things she says…I just don't get her.

This comment is "off subject" from the article, but I have to ask how anyone could trust Palin to care for and support college education for our young people when she is has no interest in further education for her own family. Todd….no college…….her oldest son….18 and in the Army …..her daughter….gonna be a mommy and "baby daddy" is not even going to get through high school!!
Anyone who votes for this ticket and then can't afford to get their kids through college, has only themselves to thank!

Maybe she should take her own jacket and go home to her own house (if it is indeed her's) in her own state to her own family. I think they need her more than the rest of us do.

Mark   October 25th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

The dangers are with repubs in office…look at the mess our country is in right now. Anybody voting for a republican at this stage is either very rich, or very stupid.

Dear Sweet Delusional Sarah,

Members of your own loop are ticked with you. Need I say more?

Why don't you call Senator McCain and ask if he regerets selecting you as his running mate now

If Palin is elected, we'll have a ninny state!

ATL LLL   October 25th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

This woman is a shameful MORON! We've entrusted the "less government" "less regulations" repubs to mind the store to this point, and 99% OF THE CITZENS OF THIS COUNTRY ARE WEAKER for it! The people in charge of wall street, enron, Keating 5 , need nannies to secure all of ours future, as long as they have say over our wealth!

Doug in New Mexico   October 25th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

And just what does this ignorant woman have to say that is meaningful and knowledgeable about anything. She is undereducated lacking in both domestic and foreign political experience and her only claim to fame is she would hunt wolves and bears from airplanes causing untold suffering. My god, I just wish she would go away. The fascist among us is calling the rest socialist. How utterly and totally ignorant.
