Battle for Virginia shifts to getting voters to the polls

(CNN) – In the final days before the election, the strategy in battleground Virginia has shifted from getting people registered to making sure they show up to vote.

"The war's being waged in Virginia," said Michael McDonald, associate professor of government and politics at George Mason University and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. "You're seeing both campaigns out in force with their lieutenants and grunts on the ground trying to get people to vote."

Watch: Democrats and Republicans wage ground war in Virginia

With 310,530 new voters registered in Virginia, a whole new group of voters could decide the election in the commonwealth.

Virginia has voted Republican in every presidential race since 1968, but the latest CNN poll of polls calculated Monday shows Barack Obama with a 7-point advantage over John McCain, 51-44 percent, with 5 percent saying they're undecided.

The McCain and Obama campaigns, along with the help of third-party organizations like the AFL-CIO, and women's groups for McCain-Palin have been going door-to-door, making phone calls, handing out literature, and sending text messages to ensure voters know where to go and vote next Tuesday.

With 310,530 new voters registered ......

Probably 310,530 names, embodied in 4 different people.

I wonder how many people she is scaring into voting for Obama.

I've already voted for Obama and, you are hearing it first here, he's going to pull off a stunning upset in Texas. The voting is heavy in the Democratic areas and the Republican areas have no excitement. The models are out-of-date and McCain-Palin are going to get a rude surprise from taking us for granted.

It should be Union Worker (singular) for McCain as you are the only one. McCain considers unions to be socialist organizations.

This deranged woman is inciting her followers instread of exciting them, her maniac supporters have already started marking "B" on their faces and making up stories to stoke racial tension and planning ethnic cleansing as if they were privy to choosing their own skin colors.

The republicans are the reason we have had so much problems with voting... they should have left things alone in 2000 and 2004. now its backfiring on them.

Reading other thread on Obama looks like he became a God like figure to many Americans. I wish people could look beyond a nice rhetoric, nice smile etc. Many leaders in the world in the past had it going for them even better than for Obama and Obamunists...look what happened to these countries......

Planning a trip to downtown Norfolk tomorrow night to see Obama!!!

It's going be cold and the lines will be long, but when you in line with thousands and thousands of smiling, enthusiastic, motivated 'REAL' Virginians, who cares about the weather.

Isn't it about time Americans get excited about the future of the greatest nation in the world!!!

    I am!

Is this war in the real part of Virginia or the fake part of Virginia. Virginia is going for Obama. Real and "fake", they know who will bring the change they need.

Its going to be weird, once the election is over, this election has been going on for almost as long as Obama has been in the Senate.

She looks like a pre-schooll teacher leading the kiddies in a tune. We don't need a cheerleader in the #2 spot. But moreover, we don't need the top of her ticket in the #1 spot.

The right leaning politics of Virginia was one reason my wife and I relocated from Virginia to California. If Virginia goes "blue" perhaps we would consider moving back. The other reason for moving was limited job opportunities and lower per capita pay compared to other regions. Perhaps Virginia has finally woke up...If so, welcome to 2008 and the future instead of the narrow minded past. Go Virginia – Obama/ Biden '08 needs you.

It is better to live in hope than in fear, we should give Obama a chance. Lord knows we are due for some good luck in this country and he will make the most of it. Few would argue that he knows how to capitalize on opportunity.
