Battle for Virginia shifts to getting voters to the polls

Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee, campaigns in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Monday.
Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee, campaigns in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Monday.

(CNN) – In the final days before the election, the strategy in battleground Virginia has shifted from getting people registered to making sure they show up to vote.

"The war's being waged in Virginia," said Michael McDonald, associate professor of government and politics at George Mason University and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. "You're seeing both campaigns out in force with their lieutenants and grunts on the ground trying to get people to vote."

Watch: Democrats and Republicans wage ground war in Virginia

With 310,530 new voters registered in Virginia, a whole new group of voters could decide the election in the commonwealth.

Virginia has voted Republican in every presidential race since 1968, but the latest CNN poll of polls calculated Monday shows Barack Obama with a 7-point advantage over John McCain, 51-44 percent, with 5 percent saying they're undecided.

The McCain and Obama campaigns, along with the help of third-party organizations like the AFL-CIO, and women's groups for McCain-Palin have been going door-to-door, making phone calls, handing out literature, and sending text messages to ensure voters know where to go and vote next Tuesday.

Hear that McPalin? The fat lady has started to sing. the Rethuglicans are done. Americans would much rather vote for hope than fear and arrogance. Palin will go down as the biggest political blunder in the last 40 years. this will go down as the most pathetic rethuglican ticket in the history of th gop. YES WE CAN AND ON NOVEMBER 5TH WE'LL BE SAYING YES WE DID.

    "my man McCain"

Only a racist or generally bitter person would have their skin crawl while listening to someone talking about hope and unity.

I am sure the literature being hand out is full of smear, dirt, lies and cow manure coming from anything on the McCain ticket. I think it is quite humorous to watch the drama unfold, when Palin and McCain are not agreeing on issues. Gees, who is running for President anyway? She says she wants more rights for special needs children, yet when does a VP make policies? And also she slams the robocalls, but that is McCains doing. Then she wants to spew things out of her pie hole just on a whim. That is why they give her scripted speaches and no interviews. Katie Courics still rings in my head.... What do you read? And no answer......

Something that all the pundits have missed is whether the Republicans and conservative leaning independants turn out to vote if they don't like McCain as a candidate but racially can not pull the lever for Obama because of race. Sort of a reverse Bradley effect.

@WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW, What about you buddy McBush? He was friends with Keating and tried to protect him during the S&L scandal of the late 80's and early 90's. I don't think McCain can be trusted to help in a financial crisis becuase he will just try to help his friends out. Too bad Obama did not travel the low road and bring up all McBush's shaddy dealings.

Then you have Palin who is ethically challenge and abuses powers. She will not even condemn her buddy Stevens for his actions..

  18. Texan's for Obama

Houston and Austin are not the only cities voting for Obama.
We live in a small town in Texas and in our neighborhood there are Obama/Biden yards signs everywhere. I have several neighbors that initially planned to vote for McCain. Not anymore. Obama might not take Texas, but he will take this election.

GET OUT AND BARACK THE VOTE! WE DID.

Re: Vote HIGHER TAXES … Vote SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE … Vote OFFSHORE BUSINESS … Vote WEAKER DEFENSE …

Same old lies again and again, pal. All you need to do is look at the facts to see that you are regurgitating the same rhetoric of the GOP. Obama's "spread the wealth" is something that is already at the heart of the U.S. tax code. What, you didn't realize that? Just look up the facts, dude. Also, look up what Socialism means. It's not Obama. Also, look up Obama's health care system. I bet Obama's policies would probably help you, yet you are ready to vote for McCain to your own detriment. Well, if that it's irony!

After spending 20+ years in the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, I still find it so interesting when those like Obama/Biden want to run for the highest office of our country and never SERVED OUR COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY those kind of people are just flag waivers when they want American votes and can appeal to those by saying what they want to hear. There's a price to pay for the liberties we enjoy and both Obama/Biden have never paid that price SADDAM IS GONE THE IRAQUIS ARE IMPLIMENTING A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT and freedoms are being realized by the Iraquis that never thought possible and Americans take for granted. President Bush should be COMMENDED but so many of you have allowed the angry bitter seed to be planted and still no attacks have been commited since 2001!!!!!

Yoyu know I am really tired of Palins half facts when trying to say Obama or Biden or anyone connected to the Obama campaign. She takes things out of context never telling the whole story. She needs to be called on it by the Press, The MCLYING XPRESS will stop at nothing to distort the truth to win an election. Now that is Unamerican!

GOBAMA!!!!!! Hitting the streets in Virginia to make sure we're true blue for Obama!

Between being called a communist (thanks to McCain's brother who thinks 911 means whatever he thinks is an emergency), unreal Virginian (another unethical Alaskan politician) and non pro-American is enough and Eight is Enough!!!!! You can leave our state McCain/Palin to the real pro-american parts of the country. I am not your friend and will continue to explain to folks why and where to check facts...

McCain not only wants to reward his friends with tax cuts, he wants to make sure his oil buddies stay in business. Bush – McCain – what's the diff? a few birthdays!

I thought his speech was truly inspiring. Just as the man who gave it is.

Meanwhile, McCain's still placing blame, digging up things from 7 years ago, and flailing with one week to go in trying to get his ducks aligned and a clear message to the public.
