Biden warned against the McCain campaign's divisive tactics this morning.
Biden warned against the McCain campaign's divisive tactics this morning.

GREENVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) – As his running mate geared up to deliver his “closing argument” to voters, Joe Biden continued to criticize the McCain campaign’s attacks on Barack Obama, comparing them to those faced by Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy in their campaigns.

“The purpose of it is to deliberately further divide the country, cause they concluded the only way they can win is if they divide us,” Biden told supporters Monday morning at an outdoor rally at East Carolina University.

“Look, let me share a little bit of history with you,” he continued. “The defenders of the status quo have always tried to tear down those who would change our nation for the better.”

“They said Thomas Jefferson wasn’t a real a real Christian. That was the essence of the campaign against him. Well does that sound familiar?” Biden asked. “They said Abraham Lincoln, they said he wanted to take away individual rights. Ladies and gentlemen, they said Franklin Roosevelt would destroy the American system of life. Sound familiar? And ladies and gentlemen, they said that John F. Kennedy was, quote, ‘a dangerous choice in difficult times.’ That’s what they said, they said John F. Kennedy was a dangerous choice in difficult times. Sound familiar?

“Well ladies and gentlemen, new ideas and new leaders are often met with new attacks and almost always negative attacks built on lies which are the last resort of those who have nothing new to offer. And that’s where we find ourselves.”

The Delaware senator pointed to a contentious interview he had with a Florida television station last week, when the anchor asked if Obama was a “Marxist” because he had told Joe the Plumber, “when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

“Are you joking? Is this a joke? Is that a question?” Biden replied incredulously at the time. The anchor assured him it was.

“This stuff you're hearing in this campaign, some of it's pretty ugly,” Biden said Monday. “And some of the innuendo is pretty ugly."

The McCain campaign responded by noting that McCain was interviewed by the same anchor Monday, and criticized the Obama-Biden campaign for “now attacking any reporter who challenges Barack Obama’s economic plan to raise taxes.”

Biden has one more rally in North Carolina where the two tickets are neck and neck in the polls. He then flies to Florida for three days of campaigning.

Biden did answer the question he pointed out what Obama's tax plan was and showed how it had nothing to do with Marxism.

Jeremy   October 27th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

How is Gov. Palin not qualified to be VP? This is one of the biggest smears of all U.S. electoral history!!! I would love one liberal to answer directly how Gov. Palin is not qualified to be VP without using slanderous comments or inuendo that she's just not smart enough or too "extreme" (aka an evangelical Christian). This has got to stop!!! What are the constitutional requirements for VP? To be over 35 years of age and be a natural born citizen. On top of that, she was mayor and governor. These are the exact same qualifications Theodore Roosevelt had!!! Look at your history!

Paul   October 27th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Obama's ideas are not new, just something that the citizens have fought against since the country was formed.
The idea that hard work would get you ahead is being replaced with taking from the ones that earn and giving it to the ones that expect a free ride.
What a sad day in American history.

We Are Two   October 27th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Obama, in 2001 Interview, Lamented Failure of Civil Rights Movement to Redistribute Wealth

In a radio interview in 2001, Barack Obama said the civil rights movement failed when it became so dependent on the Supreme Court that it never got around to working toward redistributing income.

If anyone belives that obama is going to give you a tax cut you are for a big suprise the only people that are going to get a check from the obama goberment is the people that do not work. In other words people in wellfare . Will take money from working americans and give it to the people that don’t even file a imcome tax form.

To all McCain/palin SUPPORTERS, we must stand for justice and Let’s not let our confidence and enthusiasm replace OUR DUTY to vote for this ticket.

Jwal   October 27th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Praying for PEACE!! For those who do not see at this time, a win for Senators Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, will truly be a win for ALL people. I encourage you to look beyond what you have been accustomed to, but give CHANGE an opportunity to help you, your kids, your grandkids, friends and relatives. We've all experienced change in our lives, and sometimes it is difficult to accept. But accepting change, changes things, with growth, with new opportunities. Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden have the vision, the intellect, and the wherewithal to bring all parties together for a better America, a change we all deserve, as America deserves better. Let’s work together – Democrats and Republicans for a better tomorrow. May God bless America for the better.

undecided--or should I say uninformed.....it was a 2001 interview on NPR and it has already been debunked.

Obama was actually taking more moderate court views and saying that you DO NOT attain stable social change through judicial activism.
Maybe you should read what was said instead of relying on the Drudge report or some other right wing lies.

Wow– CNN what happened to getting both sides??? Huh??? Marquardt's piece on Biden's reaction to the "Marxist" question showcases Obama camp reaction to apparent hostile questions by local media. No mention is made that the reporter and her station will be blocked from future Obama/Biden press conferences! The same detail was left out of the morning news on CNN Cable News this morning. I just happened to see "the rest of the story" while watching another cable network later tpday. In my opinion when journalists take it upon themselves to edit out important elements of a story they shoot themselves in the foot.. CNN, both on the Web and on cable, has become part of the "liberal media". It must be because the art of "balanced" journalism is no longer important at the CNN Editor's desk in Atlanta. Tom   October 27th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Biden and Obama – "If you don't ask us what we want to answer, we'll never talk to you again!". No doubt this was accompanied by a foot stomp. Poor kids. I just heard Obama say that his election will end the "divisive politics" that have paralyzed this nation. What he fails to mention is that it's his democrat heavy congress with it's 17% approval rating (lower than Bush's) that is being divisive. History of the dem primary (one of the most divisive ever) and the prez campaign shows us that Obama, with his dem congress in tow, will divide this nation like it's never been divided before, possibly killing it in the process.

B.O.'s mantra of "change" and redistribution is an old one. Remember the nations, once great, like England and France? Both England and France went the "change" route which led to redistribution. Where are they now? Second and third rate socialist countries, grasping at economic straws begging to forfeit their soverignty to join with other nations to pool resources. This is the America B.O. wants...one dependent on the kindess of others.

Let's all get and and vote for Obama/Biden (if you haven't already)!!!! (vote early if you can- check your local polling place!!). We won't win this in the polls; we will win this AT THE POLLS. Cast those ballots people- we are this much closer to turning the page on the past 8 years and changing this country for the better. The White House years for the wisdom it has lost. It's laughable that McCain thinks that he can separate himself from Bush after supporting him 90% of the time.

He rambles all over the place and his campaign is all pandering, lies and innuendo. If McCain’s campaign is a predictor of what his presidency would be we would all be in trouble if he is elected. He clearly can’t manage his way out of a paper bag.

Vote Obama…

BENJAMIN OKONOFUA   October 27th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

It is incredible that anyone still listens to Joe Biden. The man is insufferable. He speaks with conviction about things he does not know. He is absolutely despicable both in his manner of speach and in the ideas he espouses. He has no sense of ideology, no solid principle and his position on social issues change like the seconds hand of the clock.

The questions Mrs West asked were perfectly legitimate. Joe Bidens complaints about those questions and his utter confusion at being asked these questions shows what many of us have known about him – unstable and unable to lead.

Bubba   October 27th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

A dangerous president sounds good to me after King George. But I'd vote for a small potted plant before I'd vote Republican – you guys are really loony toons this year! Oh, and when exactly was McCain tested? I missed it. Maybe it was a written test, or he had to pee in a cup?

United we stand. Divided we fall. People you decide. Me I voted Obama/Biden because I want us to stand together and make this country work for us all.

So vote and lets get going on repairing what Bush/Republicans have done to this great country and what McCain/? want to do more of the same.

A sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different results. Are we insane I think not so lets prove it by electing Obama/Biden.

I would like to know if any American thinks that this country can be run without paying taxes. How are we to fund the military, provide for the elderly and infirm, infrastructure and so forth, we do not pay taxes? The ones who can ill afford to pay taxes because of their income should be allowed a larger exemption from taxes, otherwise they would need more help from the government to support their families. How is this it not patriotic to pay taxes? If you love this country as most say they do, why would you deny someone in need a helping hand?

This is the most important election in my life time and I am now retired.

My 91 yr old mother , walker and all . voted last week for Obama , and she lives in a very red state , but said it was too important that we not be fooled again! If she can stand in a line to vote , so can you!

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   October 27th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

To Rick:
First, look up socialism and marxism. Second, the government already "spreads the wealth" around with all the entitlement programs that have been in effect for decades. Right Wingers which are conservatives, republicans and nationalists means: Supporting rich, capitalist, big business INTERESTS against the interests of the poor or ordinary people. Hence, trickle down economics is a republican doctrine. Left wingers which refer to liberals, means "influenced by socialist IDEAS or promoting public welfare or the well-being of ordinary. True Socialism will not work in a capitalist world.

As for taxes, if you start to add up ALL the taxes we pay; sales tax, property tax, luxury tax, capital gains tax, income tax, etc I think you find that our total tax rate may be close to the tax rates paid in countries that have much better health care than we do. We just don't put the tax system to work properly to benfit everyone. If you cut taxes to much, then you will see a decline in services such as fire, police, schools, recreation (parks etc).

New Day   October 27th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Republican desperation makes me laugh. Since they cant build up the old bag and his nitwit friend, they will try to knock down Obama. I wonder if any of the idiots shouting "Marxist" or "Socialist" even know that the terms mean. Or if any of those want to see Social Security go away. I wonder how many protested getting their stimulus check this summer. Is this really how you want to win this election? Is it worth losing your honor and dignity just to win? I guess most of you will be carving a backwards "B" on your cheeks next, huh?

Denise Bolin   October 27th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Joe – Thanks for being REAL and fighting the good fight. You will make a great VP. I thought the interview you did over the weekend with the woman asking about marxism was almost as bad as a Fox News interview. You were right to object and I thought you answered the questions appropriately. Why would she want to be part of the smear? There were no fair and unbiased questions. It got more and more ridiculous. They aren't HARD questions, they're RIDUCULOUSLY BIASED questions.

Senator McCain and Governor Palin are polarizing America with hate! If there was ever a time to pull together, it is now. We need intelligence and thoughtful efforts, which definitely won't come from McCain and Palin either. We need Senator Obama now!

The comparisons are valid. I love that both Joe Biden and Barack Obama are/were professors and have a deep, educated understanding and respect for our laws and history. I think that we need that more than anything right now.

Joe_The_Citizen   October 27th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

America deserves a better conservative society, in the tradition of our founding-fathers such as Washington, Lincoln and, recently, Reagan, not extremist leftist liberialism. Obama is even more leftist liberal than any Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy. Is it America's destiny to have Joe Biden, and Michelle Obama as our future presidents, as Barack Obama is a smoker, and chances are he will get lung-cancer or throat-cancer? He is simply re-incarnation of Jimmy Carter + George Bush, and will cause deeper recession, or even a Great Depression, because of big spending, big well-fare system, and higher taxes to pay for all that. American people are smarter than that, and understand who has been tested, and experienced enough, to hanlde the international crises in the next 6 monhts.

jm for sc   October 27th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Undecided, it does not matter what CNN cover regarding a 2004 comment about Obama. He will win and what matters is what he has said in 2008 that will benefit America.

With comments like that, you are not undecided, you are for the dumb McCain/Palin ticket.

I am a Canadian watching from the other side of the POND. I cannot believe John McCain picked Sarah Palin to be VP in this years election. I have read as most of you have the stories that she was not ready to do interviews with major News networks because of her lack of understanding but at her rallys her supporters believe that she is the best thing since sliced bread? With McCain's pick of her as a VP it shows that you don't need any qualifications to be President of the United States of America. WOW!!!!

thomas   October 27th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

This election is clearly about maturity, and that is not a reference to age.
"My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce. ‘My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens it just does.’‘I thought, of course, we would live happily ever after.’" – Carol McCain (Jon McCain's first wife).

xargaw   October 27th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

While Biden is talking about Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy, Palin is stuck on Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder. Education truly does matter. Knowing history, having foundational knowledge, having a world view, possessing intellectual knowledge rooted in information and reason matter. It is the basis of good decision making. I agree that faith is important to many Gov. Palin, but even the first of the four tenets of faith is "Prudencia" (prudent-good thinking, discernment) is rooted in knowledge. Our country is crying out for a smart President rooted in intellect and reason with deliberative abilities.

McCain has a lot of nerve dissing Obama and Biden for attacking members of the press. But then he's tried to have it both ways on every issue you can think of in this election, from his bad joke of a running mate to taxes to attack ads. I can't wait for this to be over, especially now that I've already cast my vote for Obama and Biden.

Obama would give us "womb to tomb" care…..a giant government sponsored welfare state. But then, who would be left to pay for it?

Obama says….."spread the wealth around," which means…..

income redistritution, which means….

a Robin Hood government, which means…..

take from the rich and give to the poor, which means…..

socialism.

Can Palin talk about any issues? The stuff about not being able to process questions, I mean come on. She isn't running for PTA, this is an office of the country to represent the rest of us around the world. I would expect to be shown intelligently, not in some folksy manner.

I can already see the headlines of an investigation into the mccain administration and them sighting that "executive priviliage" crap. She already did that with the troopergate.

I'm of the mind that if we somehow elect mccain/palin, we deserve the mess coming our way.

Rick: It's neither socialism nor marxism...that's the entire point. We already have a graduated income tax. In fact, taxes of any kind are inherently "spread the wealth" policy. Find me a candidate for President who is willing to run on a "no taxes whatsoever" platform and he'll be the guy with a right to call other candidates socialists for wanting to tax people.

James   October 27th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

WHY WON'T YOU POST THIS?????

Mr.Biden Obama is no JFK

JFK: Ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country!

OBAMA: "If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order as long as I could pay for it I'd be OK. But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterise the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can't do to you. Says what the Federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf

VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2008

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 27th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Obama wants to tax the wealthy in order to rebuild our roads and bridges.

McCain calls such things "socialism."

I guess when you've got a private plane and seven houses you don't need to drive so much.

I guess if you can't drive the roads, you can't get to the polls and vote.

Vote Obama while we still have something worth saving.

Hey, "BIDEN-BIDEN..", what does campony mean?

Alabama Voter   October 27th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

McAin and Palin keep dragging out Joe the plumber and Tito the builder. How about Joe and Tito on the Unemployment line because his job was sent to Mexico. Those people are trying to make a living too. They were laid off because the big companies could make more money by paying workers a lot less in other countries and if you have noticed it's the big companies that are having to lay off thousands of workers not the small businesses.

Chad the Web Developer NC   October 27th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I grew up poor in rural NC. I earned two college degrees working my way through school and I'm doing alright financially. It was hard work but it has paid off and I wouldn't go back and do anything differently. I currently pay $3,279.34 per month in income tax. That doesn't include property taxes and/or fees I pay on my home and vehicle, sales tax on purchases, etc.

It is discouraging to think that the harder I work the more I have to pay. I don't feel like I am getting my money's worth as it is with what I pay currently. I don't mind "sharing the wealth" but the fact is there are good investments and bad investments, and I don't trust any government entity to make a better judgement than me or anyone else on what is good and bad.

Foreign observer   October 27th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Good luck to Mc Cain – but not too much ! He is a fine guy – but a pity not at the level of his time. Same as Bush.

Theresa   October 27th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I am sick of people talking about Jesus being a socialist. No where in the Bible does Jesus talk about it being the governments responsibility to take care of the poor, hungry, widowed, or orphaned. This is our personal responsibility. I don't want the government determining how my "wealth" should be distributed.

DOS   October 27th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Biden is a smart man. It was amazing watching that interview. It drove home how skilled he is at rolling with punches, dealing with a series of ridiculous, accusatory questions. Contrast that with Gov. Sarah Palin, who couldn't even answer Katie Couric's slowballs (What newspapers do you read? What Supreme Court cases do you disagree with?). It surprises me to see such a world of difference between the two tickets this year, but somehow it happened. We need to fight to make sure that the right people come into power this year. Palin is totally unacceptable as a President-in-Waiting.

j   October 27th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

The attacks certainly do sound familiar and OLD. Barack Obama is more than qualified to be President. He's run a steady and consistent campaign while McCain has been jumping all over the place. Obama has vision for the future, while McCain will be more of what we've already had. So, Obama supporters – Like Mr Obama says, Don't get cocky – GET OUT AND VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA! Hope – Unity – Progressive Change We NEED!

Whoa, historical references more than twenty years ago? Does not he realize that he is talking to the American people, who have a hard time remembering anything that is not on the current edition of sports center.

That being said he is absolutely correct, lets just hope some Americans understand what he is talking about. America's public education, isnt it the best?

chelle   October 27th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I still can't believe that a reporter would seriously ask if Barack Obama was a Marxist, or that John McCain would act like that was a legitimate question. I realize that John McCain was a less than stellar student but surely he must realize that Marxism is a political ideology that has a framework and connotation that frankly is an insult and a slur. Does he really think that Joe Biden should have addressed the question with anything but the scorn he did?? John McCain has sunk so low....the man was held prisoner by true communists – is he truly comparing Obama's ideas to those of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Ho Che Min? And does he know who those people were?

Rick   October 27th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I guess I don't get to comment on this one. Maybe CNN doesn't want to hear about JFK's failures due to inexperience.

Thomas   October 27th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

I remember when it was said the JFK was dangerous because he was a Catholic, and his loyalty to the USA was questioned. It seems the Republican machine is very adept at stirring up ugly emotions and fears. Shame on them! Abraham Lincoln must be turning in his grave to see what has happend to the Republicans. Desperate people take desperate measures.

Just Call Him Mr. President   October 27th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Give 'em Hell, Joe! The Republicans have proven how terrible their policies, ideas and methods are. They've shown us that they're nothing but a bunch of lying crooks who support 'redistributing the wealth' to the top. It's time for real Americans to stand up to these criminals and say, "Hell No!"

Obama/Biden '08/12!

Italo   October 27th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

its amazing how CNN doesn't give as much attention to Biden's gaffs as they do on Sarah's. I am fully aware of CNN being so pro Obama, but can they at least make it look at least just a little fair? If Obama wins, which I don't believe he will, he only has to thank the media, not the voters. If he loses, he should also thank the media, since it is them who have caused the backlash that has started in the last couple of days. If it wasn't for King and Coop , I would probably never watch CNN. The rest, well, they need some journalism 101

Do Not let Obama Kill The American Dream   October 27th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Just Out:
A 7-year-old radio interview in which Barack Obama discussed the failure of the Supreme Court to rule on redistributing wealth in its civil rights rulings has given fresh ammunition to critics who say the Democratic presidential candidate has a socialist agenda.

Obama has a Socialist Agenda. Obama is putting a price tag on the American Dream of $250k per household. Obamas message is dream until you make $250k per household, and then I(Obama) will redistribute the wealth to people who do not even work and want everything for free.

Keep The American Dream Alive
Vote McCain/Palin

Josh   October 27th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Undecided at #4,
you seem to have already made your choice. In fact the transcript of the conversation which you reference if some 2001, and Obama said that the civil rights movement did in fact give some right to African Americans but it's failure was in the fact that the system is still biased economically speaking and that very little was done to even that playing field. This is a fact. There are many families who are rich, like Johnson and Johnson, who were made rich off slavery. There are many African American families that have been poor since they were shipped here. These are facts. In the interview Obama did not say he would rob from teh rich and give to the poor, he just stated a fact and said the government should try to address it, but he did not say how.

Hey anonymous, are you stupid. Don't you realize that McCain will tax everything you own including your water. Now look at the sceniro about taxes. Social Security, Health Care and retax your house if you are in foreclosure. Now tell me if this is the kind of man you want or a man that will tax these things that you don't pay taxes on. Listen to what McCain says close and you will see that he only wants your votes so he can prioritize everything to the public and baby oh baby you may not have money to buy a soda or chips.

I want Obama cause at least I will have affordable health care and some Social Security to live off in the coming year.

BJZ   October 27th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Hello? Taxes by their very nature "redistribute the wealth" and allow all American citiizens equal protection and rights under the law. And for all you right win evangelical Republicans who want another party to lose: just remember what Jesus said about rich men and the eyes of needles! What about "That which you do to the least of my brothers, you do also to me"? If you have extra, don't Christina beliefs teach us to share? The wealth of this country is mainly in the hands of 1% of its population. Are you all happy with that?

Those polls claiming an uphill battle for McCain look mighty close to me. McCain can close 4-5 points easily.

It appears that the only ones trying to suppress the vote is CNN by discouraging McCain voters from voting by PRETENDING that Obama's victory is a foregone conclusion.

I'm voting for Obama because real inexperience with everything is important to me.

I'm voting for Obama because I like a guy who hangs around with Anti-American creeps.

I'm voting for Obama to insure a strong national defense while cutting and running.

I'm voting Obama because he's a good speaker and words are more important than deeds.

Enough said. Vote Obama!

These attacks are worse, because we are supposed to have come so far in race relations. It is apparent that we haven't. Have either of them show or talked about their plan? The only plans we here are Obama/Biden so that should tell you that the plan McCain/Palin have is GEORGE BUSH. Now people let's be for real and vote Obama/Biden. No Bias No Bull.

What would JFK say to Dick Chenney and Sarah Palin's executive power and rights to secrecy:

The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in ensuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it.

Side Issue: Low Gas Prices

I wish CNN would stop reporting about the low gas prices. Here's a news flash, the gas prices are low because there's an ELECTION next week. As soon as the election is over, the prices will go back up. Someone reported that they hadn't seen prices drop that much since 2004, HELLO? There was an election that year as well.

We are not fooled by the oil companies, the first chance they get the prices will go back up to $4. Get a grip America, this is a ploy to vote for Republicans, the oil man's best friends.

Well Done Joe ..
It is a shame for every American now to support McCain/Palin due to the way they handle their opponents . It is so sad ...

Frank G   October 27th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

When you have nothing to say you say anything. And telling us "I know how to fix it", no matter what the subject matter, and then not telling us how, is typical McCain nonsense. Somehow, the "Etch A Sketch" toy keeps coming to mind whenever the McCain/Palin ticket spout off their nonsense irrespective of the subject matter.
McCain has failed the big test.
And that is to convince the American public he would be a better leader.
This time, hopefully, the American public "gets it".

I've already voted for Obama/Biden, but here's one more reminder to those who haven't. Get out there and do it – preferably early. If your state doesn't offer early voting, get yourself on-line and verify your registration. Don't let the cagers catch you with a "flagged registration" on election day.

By the way – those who say "the polls are tightening." Looks to me like Obama support is holding steady, and McCain is getting some support from Libertarian voters who are abandoning Barr at the last minute.

Nevertheless – every vote counts. Be sure to cast yours as early as possible!

Sally   October 27th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

He's right. I don't know why anyone would be surprised. Great change usually provokes great reaction from the status quo.

Consider the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa or the independence movement in India. Or, even closer to home, consider the suffragette movement and the civil rights movements in US history.

Moments of national greatness are usually birthed amidst opposition anger, fear- mongering and hate-filled rhetoric. But they are birthed nonetheless.

Rob   October 27th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

What a flippin' joke. This is the same yutz who just a year ago said that Barry wasn't qualified to be preisdent, who basically promised we'd get attacked if Barry wins, is now equating this failure to some of the greatest presidents around (conveniently leaving out Reagan)? It just goes to show that the liberal democrat party has no value system or beliefs, other than their own self serving interests. Guess all that flip-flopping is easier for you all since you don't have spines.

To Tulsa – you either speak for the Oklahoma socialist party, the Destroy America party, or the Oklahoma chapter of Foolish Voters Anonymous, because it's those types of freaks who'll 'take this country back' if the Failed Organizer..I'm sorry, His Most Holy On High, the Savior Barrack H. The world knows that deregulation is one of the main drivers of the economic crisis. Greed has spiraled out of control. And it is the mantra of the Republicans that deregulation is necessary for a free market economy.

And yet Greenspan said last week that he was fundamentally wrong as he put too much trust in the banking system.......

America is a great nation. The free world needs a strong America.

I truly hope that Americans vote for the person who will be best for restoring the world's economy......

Obama

Please vote for Obama.

geraldine   October 27th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

I've paid fairly close attention to the issues in this election (not as much to the Ayers or Palin wardrobe tripe), and I still can't identify any provocative legislative or policy positon Obama supports. He is amazingly articulate and effective at blaming Bush for everything (who wouldn't be), but I don't see how that's a strategy for improvement. His State and Senate voting records don't reveal much, beyond voting party-line when he is cornered to vote at all.

So, we must default to the man's espoused principals, in his writings and speeches for a hint on how he might govern. Yet, referencing these sources is now demonized as racist or fear-mongering. These are his words, folks.

What happens when he's President (he will be) and his administration makes some bone-headed decision (he will – it happens to EVERY administration)? Are we allowed to hold him accountable, or will the media and left wing shout us all down as being racist fearmongers? Coupled with resurrection of the Fairness Doctrine, this trend is a scary one.

Concerned Voter   October 27th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Tired of being moderated because you're anti-obama? Come to sodaheaddotcom and post all you want! Bo biased Moderation over there!

Dee   October 27th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Joe should have asked the reporter if Bush and the Republicans have been Marxist for spreading the wealth around upward to the rich including all the wealth that has gone to Haliburton during the Iraq war from the $10 trillion deficit.

Nevada Democrat   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

More attacks=more Obama lead; Bad strategy from the jump-

Someone should take responsibility for these off the wall decisions during these crucial times!

RDS   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

@undecided...they're probably not reporting it b/c that's not what he was talking about dummy. He was actually agreeing with the conservative point of view. The only people reporting this are Faux new and the Drudge Report...both of which have become far from credible news sources.

BJ Moritz   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I don't understand why socialism is so bloody terrible. I guess the idea of a healthy, functioning society is naive...

Voter   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Even the GOP response is an attack rather than an idea/solution.

Who's the one causing partisan in Washington and keeping things from getting done? The finger pointers or the ones trying to try something different?

Lois Blasenheim   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Biden knows some history unlike his opponent who knows how to shop for designer clothes and nothing else.

JAS   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Give em hell Joe!!!!!!

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE, VOTE STRAIGHT DEM TICKET!   October 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

As if the West hack had any journalistic integrity. She was only repeating the Reptilian party's talking points. In fact, Joe the Vice President was much more gracious than I would have been when the old hag alluded to the fact that Biden might recognize the Marx quote. The Obama camp is well within their rights to block her from future interviews during the Presidency.

As I recall, McCrypt pulled an interview with King because McCrypt was pouting because he thought Brown had beat up poor widdle Tucker Bounds and ask Bounds unfair questions, which was not nearly as partisan as this witch(not the word I wan to use but it is close to Halloween so I will keep it seasonal)!

JD in Moraga   October 27th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Did the McCain campaign also note that the news anchor is married to a republican analyst who has worked for the McCain campaign?

JohnWinNC   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

As Obama has said repeatedly, those in power do not let go of it without a fight. McCain continues to incite others to "fight" with him. Guess what. Many who support Obama are doing so because we are tired of "fighting" about everything. It is time for some civil discussions, genuine collaborations and cooperative approaches to a list of very serious issues. McCain has avoided these, preferring to start new fights among the various factions in America. What America needs now is UNITY and Obama/Biden is the team offering that deal.

M. WINNERS   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

That hack of a reporter that Joe Biden rightly slammed was from the Rush Limbaugh Fascist School of Irrational Neocon Journalism with an advanced degree in "Fear, smear, mock and LIE" interview techniques. Only she forgot to moronically scream "It's all about race!"...

Winnie Hussein . . . in Montana   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Yeah, I watched that so-called interview, which was a journalistic joke. It was painful to watch that woman ask questions that she could not even understand herself. It was obvious that she was reading scripted questions, not questions that she came up with or had an actual understanding of. Then, if you check the station's website for her bio it states who her husband is – a McCain political ally. Hmmm. Me thinks she got caught asking partisan questions in a format that is supposed to be non-partisan. McCain's questions, on the other hand, were super easy, legitimate questions. No comparison. Biden handled himself a lot better than I would. My answer would have had to be "bleeped".

John from White Plains, NY   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Biden's reply was perfect. The reporter was using the comment to place her own spin, similar to what done w/ Biden's comment that Obama would be tested. What President has not been tested - ALL HAVE!!

The Conservative media needs to stick to the facts McCain is yesterday's news. I care about tomorrow. How can I have faith in McCain when he has selected a running mate that is clearly unqualified, in many aspects to be a heart beat away from the presidency.

Obama/Biden - all the way!!!

VCC   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I would like to know if any American thinks that this country can be run without paying taxes. How are we to fund the military, provide for the elderly and infirm, infrastructure and so forth, we do not pay taxes? The ones who can ill afford to pay taxes because of their income should be allowed a larger exemption from taxes, otherwise they would need more help from the government to support their families. How is this it not patriotic to pay taxes? If you love this country as most say they do, why would you deny someone in need a helping hand?

jeff in PA   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Time to put the money where the mouth is and vote for Obama. There is alot of potential for a very successful Nov. 4th provided everyone comes out and supports him. If he wins, the world will rejoice the fact Americans finally made a decision that won't have a negative impact on the world.

30-m-PA-voted McCain   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

CNN, I'm still waiting for the story about how Obama thought the supreme court should have been involved in 'spreading the wealth' It's all over the news except on your web site. You can't hide it forever as much as it hurts your beloved Obama.

PUMA

conservative   October 27th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Only problem is Obama Isn't a Lincoln or Jefferson !!! He is a product of the Democrat party lusting for power no matter who or what their candidate is . Onward to a socialistic nanny state ruled by the liberals !

Denise Groves   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Whatever Biden says, I hope he does not put his foot in his mouth with just a week to go and cause them to loose the election!

Accountant Guy   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

GO JOE!! Barack the Vote America!!

Obama/Biden '08

Andy   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Wait until the Marxist is finally outted. The MSM cannot hide Obama's redistribution of wealth audio.

As for Biden, do you want a person this close to the Presidency who is a complete moron? His billing as dumbest man in the Senate lives on.

Ya_Ya   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

It seems like everyone on the Bush, oops I mean McCain side is geared up to slide him in to the Whitehouse. Team Obama on the other hand seems to have a plan for what to do AFTER they get into the Whitehouse. But then again, if he just plans to continue as Bush 2.0 he can just use the same playbook that Bush used.

Learn   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Learn about this man do not jsut go along with the promise of hope... I know we all need things to be better. Obama is nto the answer he promises:

From Audacity of Hope:
"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

From Dreams of My Father:
"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

"I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."

Bring on the Elections   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Joe Biden is absolutely correct. I saw Joe Biden when the news anchor called Obama policies similar to a Marxist. It's absord and Biden told the news anchor lady correctly. The anchor woman was totally out of line and Biden let her have it because the next thing you know, McCain will be on the campaign trail calling Obama a Marxist Obama has stood a lot of name calling and it has to stop.

Give 'em Hell Joe!

Jerry   October 27th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Well done Joe. You were absolutely right to react with incredulity at that stupid comparison with Marx.

Imagine the furore if an anchor asked John McCain what is the difference between the principles of "Country First" and this quote....

"It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of his nation; that the position of the individual ego is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole..." Adolph Hitler

Mark   October 27th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Monica (Houston, TX), I hope you are not seriously trying to compare being president of the Harvard Law review to being President of the United States of America...I swear, obama people have no sense, it's the most pathetic "I want everything for free so I can be lazy" idea I have ever witnessed in my life...pathetic

Spencer/Virginia   October 27th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

He couldn't have put it any plainer and simpler. Joe knows what he's talking about.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Joe you are the carpenter, so keep hammering. Sooner or later the idiots will learn that if they want to play with the big dogs they have to eat real bones.
Obama/Biden 08/12

Lakeland, FL   October 27th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Let's put country first and elect Obama

Rob   October 27th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Undecided,
You do you know that the 2004 comment is related to a judicial case and that the comment is so far out of context to make the statement laughable at best. The other is about Tax Policy. Please provide more insight to your statment please. We are interested in your explaination.

Florida Obama Supporter   October 27th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

I think this reporter should be fired. She is showing your obvious bias against Obama.

Dr Roy   October 27th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Agree with comment from "undecided." Why has CNN, NPR, ABC and MSNBC not reported on the interview (it was 2001, not 2004). That is hitting the airwaves big time!!!

First, the flop of "W". Then, then flop of the 1/2-hour infomercial before the World Series. Now, the interview. Three strikes for O-Blah-Ma!

fella from Chicago   October 27th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Biden, you best keep your mouth shut until the election is over or you're liable to cost "The One" the presidency.

FED UP!   October 27th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

OH MAN!!!! I love you Biden!!

Well put!!

Bulldog   October 27th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

All the GOP can do is call names, make false accusations, and try their hardest to supress voters from voting or having their votes counted. They have no ideas, no solutions, just name calling and even throwing each other under the bus. That is not what this country needs. We need someone who will lead this country with hope and optimism. That is Barack Obama.

vic nashville,Tn   October 27th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Sen. Biden if you want Obama to win the election then take one week off

Tony   October 27th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

GO OBAMA!

GO BIDEN!

MCCAIN AND PALIN ARE DESPERATE AND WILL THROW IN EVERYTHING THEY HAVE IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

THEY ARE LOSERS AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR THE COUNTRY.

COME ON PEOPLE..........WAKE UP!

Jim   October 27th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Picking Biden as his VP candidate was a mistake. I see McCain winning in an upset. The center rejects the far left.

tigerakabj   October 27th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Amen Joe. McCain is an old timer, without much time left so he is pulling out all of the stops, while his running mate is running for 2012. Obviously those 2 have different agendas.

Keep working Joe. I've already cast my ballot for you and Barack down here in Georgia. Please believe we will make this state blue.

And tell you ex-friend John McCain he'd better go back to Arizona and campaign, b/c it's 44/40 and closing.

Obama/Biden 2008/2012.

Noah   October 27th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Biden also went on to say that both Abe Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson appeared on TV to ensure that the country not believe what their opponents were saying. This guy is brilliant.

barbara   October 27th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Joe is right. The only thing McCain has is attacks against Barack Obama.

Demorat to the bone   October 27th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Obama will be our next president! Get ready America. This old white gal has just waited 6 hours and voted for Obama. First time voting Democrat.

undecided   October 27th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Why has CNN not covered the 2004 story of Obama's comments that he felt that the federal judges should step in and MANDATE that money should be taken from the rich and redistributed to the poor?

That sure sounds like Marxist / Socialist comments to me!!!!

tulsa   October 27th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Go Joe!
You and Barack will be in office soon.
We will take this country back.
O/B08

YAM   October 27th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Voted for you on Saturday in FL!

Obama/Biden 08',

Vote the rest of the bumbs out, or send them to Alaska when Palin goes back!

Monica (Houston, TX)   October 27th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

MCCAIN/PALIN SUPPORTERS: If Senator Obama is elected, he will be a president of ALL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE (even those "Americans" who call him "terrorist,” “anti-American,” “Socialist,” “Communist,” etc., etc.,), not favoring liberal over conservative, but truly trying to bridge divisions to unify and lead our country to be an even better country. If you do a little research, you'll see a preview of that in how he successfully led as president of the Harvard Law Review. And, YES HE HAS reached across the aisle throughout his political career and will continue to do so if he’s elected president. In fact, a President Obama administration will be a bipartisan one.

OBAMA/BIDEN SUPPORTERS, LISTEN UP. Let’s not let our confidence and enthusiasm replace OUR DUTY to vote for this ticket.
