Some Republicans or hopeful, others prepare for the worst.
Some Republicans or hopeful, others prepare for the worst.

(CNN) – Eight days out and some Republicans see small glimmers of progress, if not hope. But most are fairly bleak about the GOP’s chances.

“Feels like the makings of a landslide,” said one veteran GOP operative who has held top jobs in presidential campaigns and been closely involved in past congressional cycles.

Another longtime strategist who is involved in a number of congressional and state races this year said many Republicans who had run good campaigns were asking a daunting question heading into the final week: “Will all these newly registered voters go to vote for Obama and then walk out without voting for a lot of candidates they have never heard of, or will they go all the way down the ballot to create coattails?”

Somewhat more optimistic was a GOP strategist closely involved with the McCain campaign.

“Things improved” over the weekend, was this strategist’s take. “No mystery. Lots of red states closer than last week.”

This operative said rural voters and white downscale men had moved a bit toward the Republican ticket in recent days, making the battleground states somewhat more competitive.

A second senior McCain campaign adviser said Senator McCain had taped new advertisements to be used in the final week. One, due out as early as Monday, is McCain speaking to the camera about what he considers the best components of his approach to the economy, and his take on the downsides of the Obama plan.

Later in the week, this senior adviser said, the McCain campaign plans to launch what he called a strong “commander-in-chief for the close” ad.

The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska's largest newspaper, endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. ... putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time," The Daily News said.

The newspaper said Obama "brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand."
The Daily News said since the economic crisis has emerged, McCain has "stumbled and fumbled badly" in dealing with it.
"Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown's root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it," the paper said. ..."and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation," the paper said.

The GOP has been doing an excellent job campaigning for Obama. They mention his name more than their own canidate's name. Subconsciously, they believe that Obama is the better canidate, but they are afraid to admit it.

The political landscape has regressed to a European soccer match. Listen to yourselves! (And look at your spelling, geez). I am ashamed. How can this be my country? The truth has been priced out of the market, and neither side seeks it. "Rome is the mob", and our fate is the same.

I think Obama will win a close one...
I also think in 2012 he will lose by the largest margin in history...

After his taxes hit... and unemployment goes over 10%... people will understand exaclty what they voted for...

It's cool though... we have to do this once in awhile... see Carter 76

Anthony   October 27th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Anyone? Can anyone tell me why McCain should be president without using Obama's name once? Seems like the only things McCain had to run on were Obama's affiliations and how un-like Bush McCain is.

To those already projecting Obama to be our worst president ever, that desperate point is ignorant and a waste of breath. 4 years, hell, eight years is not enough to fix the damage done by Bush the "W", and yes, instilling hope (and not fear) into society is a powerful tool that helps in the recovery of any nation. Not to mention the onus should not be on ONE MAN to fix an entire country. A country is great because its PEOPLE are great, and since the fear based psychological rule of the Right wings has crippled our minds, so too has the country gone the way of its people.

Obama is a leader, not a dictator. We just have to follow with strong actions of our own, and WE THE PEOPLE can get this country back on track.

I remain doubtful but I'm also wondering how early Election Night will end. Some polls are showing that McCain's number in his own state are dropping. But whenever Montana and North Dakota are now considered swing states, the Republicans have to realize that they have a huge problem.

Democrat   October 27th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

A post said to name one reason to vote for mccain without mentioning obama. Easy. While I can name many, the most pressing one is that McCain has a proven track record. His views are known. You may like them, you may not. He is also a longtime, unwavering friend to Isreal.
McCain/Palin!

GP   October 27th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Just better hope your name isn't purged from one of their voter rolls. Better to not have thousands of democrats voting rather than letting a few mickey mouses voting.

Republicans are outraged over voter registration fraud. Where is the outrage over their actions to suppress and deny votes?

Chuck   October 27th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

That is because of all the mudslinging the republicans did. It is coming back at them like a landslide. Shouldn't have been so negative.

Amazing, gas is down to $2.31 a gallon a week before election, and Syria was attacked and suposedly a top Al Queda leader was killed. The REPUBLICANS are AMAZAING. They brought the gas down to improve the GOP/Bush ratings and want to instill FEAR about terrorism and wow what a great job at catching a terrorist when they knew where he was all these years anyway. GREAT TACTIC. Still voting for OBAMA!!

Of course, yet another Obama network "poll" suggesting "the anointed one" is floating to the presidency, where he will be adorned by golden fleeces and awe-struck, text-messaging, worshippers. Drunk with "Kewl" aid, you believe buzz words like "hope" and "change" are something unique to politics. Obama remains an empty suit, and an American Idol figure frighteningly similar to days of vulnerable Germany in the early twentieth century. A few generations removed, and how quickly we forget. And the best joke of it all – Obamabots continue to label Gov. Palin as inept and unqualified – as if Obama is any MORE qualified than she is!!??? Get real.

Signed, another life-long Dem for McCain.

Betty   October 27th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I would not count out John Mccain . A lot of people are saying one thing but will do the other. I will say it one more time. People will not be worried about paying the mortgage if we are fighting the war on Main St. We need a strong leader now more than ever. We have two wars going on and our man are over their fighting for US. I do not want any one running our county that can not say the pledge a allegiance and who has so many connections with voter fraud and the list goes on and on. I do not trust Obama !!!

If Obama does win, I hope Republicans take a page from the Obama campaign, and talk more about the issues and less time attacking a candidate. People want answers, not cheap shots, because, at the end of the day, the place those shots hit are the voters.

Voting for intelligent government this time: Obama/Biden '08

Charles from Atlanta   October 27th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

McCain simply does not have the intelligence/knowledge/character for United States president. He had all the time this summer and didn't realize the economy problem. He said "the American economy is fundamentally strong" one week before Lehman Brothers went bankrupcy. He also had Phil Gramm as the economy advisor said America is "nation with whiners". He chose Palin as the VP ticket without deep consideration but just compromising with conservatives. He showed a typical long-time Washington politician and avoid direct answers during the debates. He is an 72-year old man that does not have either the energy nor the plan to lead the country to recovery. The only thing left for McCain is go negative – socialism, terroist, higher tax, no experience,..., just want to give Republican something they can against Obama, instead of finding some positive about McCain.

Spread ing the wealth in ALaska is okay...I could use some of it. Perhaps Americans may get a truer picture of what taxing and subsidies and socialism and building roads and social security and all that means...call it waht you may. Palin was a train wreck from day one and my heart goes out to the wildlife in ALaska and to the poverty stricken millions of AMericans that the republican platform has created with their elitiist and healthy and wealthy politics. How much panic can create such an ugly and low campaign~ how can one be an elitist one week and then a terrorist and than an Arab and then a socialist and then a markist? Marx is laughing his butt off. It is called neo-imperialism and McCain/Palin and their backers fit the bill.

C W   October 27th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Judging by the kind of campaign McCain has run (and he has run it – at the very least, he's gone along with the strategy), the Republican "base" is motivated only by fear and distrust. How sad! If I were a Republican, I would be ashamed that my party has devolved to such a pitiful state.

OHIOmomforO   October 27th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Ted   October 27th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

1.) GOP has to talk about Obama because HE is the problem in this election

2.) Why should you vote for McCain (without mentioning Obama)

* Republicans strengthen the military – which provides security for our future. It doesn't do any good to have an extra few $ in your pocket if your country is under attack.

* Republicans help those who create jobs and opportunities for all Americans (they do not offer handouts to people who are not willing to help themselves).

PROUD MCCAIN/Palin supporter   October 27th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

To all the Obama – it is not over yet. and if he does get elected (GOD HELP US) lets see if you liberals like him after he goes back on his word not to raise taxes. START handing it the money over he is going to take your money and spend has he pleases.

Janet   October 27th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Maybe they wouldn't be down if McCain would quit lying to the american public and talk about the issues, not Obama. Now he's talking against Bush's economic policies, when he voted for 90% of the time in favor of Bush's economic policies.

Hunny, you watch too much TV. Actually go out and educate yourself about the voting records vs watching the tv ads that the media wants you to believe.

Jimmy O   October 27th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Guys,

I attended the Palin rally in Leesburg today. The atmosphere was electrifying. We had such a great time. She was great, she smiled, she gave us the famous wink.. love her "gotchas", "betchas". There were many "Rednecks for McCain/Palin 08" banners. We are finally going to have a voice in the White House with Sarah and Todd Palin!

I am definitely going to vote for McCain. With McCain in the White house, Palin will be the head of the senate. All the senators will report to her, so she will be in charge of formulating policy at the senate. Hopefully she can fire any senator that does not follow her instructions

Sometimes I think Palin should be on top of the ticket. Sarah for President, 2012. Let's start the draft now..Her wink will melt the hearts of world leaders.

MikeD   October 27th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I hope that everyone comes out to vote and has their vote counts. The problem that I foresee is, balots will be lost/destroyed or voters will be turned around based upon their appearance, not allowing them to vote.

The problem with this country is corruption. I hope and pray that corruption in this campaign is removed and a president is elected based upon the citizens of the United States. However, you already see false statements everyday in the campaigns. What happened to morals? The candidates hardly ever tell the whole truth, they only tell a portion of it.

Joan , Ontario   October 27th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Probably if someone painted Obama on an American flag, the Republicans would be all over it saying it was unpatriotic.

johnrj08   October 27th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Pragmatism has conquered ideology. That's the news that the Republican Party needs to absorb. Talking points, negative personal attacks, political cynicism are now the ingredients for certain defeat at the polls. Intelligence trumps experience, and divisive campaigning has a reverse effect. If the Republican Party wants to survive, it will have to throw out the ideologues and remnants of mid-20th century dogmatism which currently infests its ranks.

Robyn   October 27th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

If Obama wins, many of us small business owners are ready to close up shop. We might as well have our hands out like everyone else since he will be giving away the ranch. Having been in one socialist country Australia where you pay 52% in tax to cover the 80% of the country on the dole (welfare) so they can hang out at the beach, I who own 4 businesses refuse to feed those too lazy to do anything and spread my wealth while I work 80 hours weekly to have gotten me there. I will close my companies and lay off the employees as it doesn't pay to do so under Obama tax rules. I am hoping for the Bradley effect as we don't need a socialist or communist rule here in America.

Nimi from NY   October 27th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I don't know why people feel the need to declare this race over when many Americans didn't vote yet. I am an Obama supporter and I don't like this kind of attitude. Play until the end to win. You didn't win until it's over. And it's not over yet because many Americans didn't vote yet.

Perhaps I should vote for McCain. Obama won all three debates, so he's probably too smart. I should pick McCain because Obama is so popular, and he's such an eloquent speaker, so McCain must a good choice. Plus, Obama selected a qualified running mate - made a governing choice instead of going with someone he'd met one time at a conference, so McCain should be good. Besides, Obama lives in Chicago and Al Capone used to live in Chicago so Obama probably likes organized crime.

Besides having nothing to offer America, McCain is simply too old to be President!

Back when Dole was running for President, my grandmother (who was 86 at the time and knew of what she spoke) said HE was too old. McCain's older than Dole was!!

So unless you want Caribou Barbie (read: Todd Palin, Karl Rove, et al) running the country, VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

All that McCain can say is that he will change things, he will fight for you, stand with me. But he does not give any details of how he will change things. He is good at saying what Obama does, or what Obama did not do, but he never gives specific details of what he is going to do.

deborah, WV   October 27th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Obama is right, we need to stay alert.

McCain is about to unroll his October surprise, a vicious ad featuring Reverend Wright, although he had promised earlier in the campaign that he would not go there. Instead, he is letting the RNC do his dirty work for him. They will roll these ads out right before people go to the polls, hoping to scare voters into changing their minds about Obama.

In West Virgina the Republicans stole our primary vote. McCain was forced down our throats in a back room deal. We didn't get to vote in the primary. I hope they don't try to steal the vote on a national level too.

Please be aware that we need to be vigilant and we need EVERY VOTE!! Freedom has never been free.

Saying ad nauseum "I know how to fix___" is not good enough. His whole campaign has been about trying to paint Obama as the boogeyman and his own personal aggrandizement, not about real plans or solutions. Vote for him at your own peril, but the country is the one who will pay the price (can you say WWIII?). An angry old man with an inferiority complex and a true dim bulb for a running mate? Please! Oregon will win for Obama, but it looks like a pretty good chance we might also unseat Gordon Smith, a long-term GOP who's been in Bush's pocket until a couple of years ago when he woke up, realized he might be in danger, and started trying to backpeddle and act like a moderate. It's been amusing to watch, but I don't think a lot of people are fooled. Last I heard, he's statistically tied with his Democrat challenger, and frankly, this doesn't look like a good year for the GOP in Oregon, at any level, any office.

I am rather confused, most Americans I talk to, are going to or have voted for Obama/Biden. Yet the polls only have them leading by 5-8 points, that's only 2 points above the margin of error.

How is it possible that it's going to be a landslide then? Please excuse my ignorance, but being a Canadian, the US election can be very confusing.

Confused, but hopeful in Toronto.

Jeff   October 27th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

I can't wait!!! Unemployment rates going up. Goods and services being more expensive. Big companies closing thier plants to open new ones over seas. That is the only CHANGE you will see in America with Obama as President of the United States.

Mark my words, with a full Democratic Senate and a Democratic President these things will happen. Say goodbye to small business and the American Dream.

You want change.... vote independent.

I like designer clothes too.   October 27th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Rural voters...white downscale men...

Just a nicer way of saying "undereducated, bigoted country folk".

Rob   October 27th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

One can only hope that enough smart, intelligent, and principled people turn out and send the false prophet / failed community organizer and the blabbering foot-in-mouth dunce back to whatever la-la-land induced fantasy they live in.

Obama may be change the fools can believe in, but it is change America cannot have. Change for the worse is not change, and that's what Barry will bring.

Wise up! Vote smart! NOBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

after reading Obama's closing speech and Mccains relentless air filled attacks. I clearly see who has a vision for this country. McCains whole speech was directed toward false claims at Senator Obama, while Obama didn't waste much of his speech talking about McCain at all. He spoke about the things he has stuck too over the last 22 months. McCain is on something new today, much like he was last week, and the week before that, etc...This time its an interview that he has twisted the words of Senator Obama. Even in the last week, he refuses to try something that will speak to the people. Just continues to attempt at injecting fear. Its SAD and I feel sorry for him. Well not really!

OBAMA 08'

AEK   October 27th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

I see that now Senator McCain and Mrs. Palin are sniping at each other. What a great team that would make in the White House! They can't even agree on a message during the campaign. Maybe they should have just stuck to the issues, actually, just find one issue, and made this election about the freedom to think differently instead of running a Rovian us against them campaign. Of course that would have required that the "new Republican Party" (love those air quotes!) embrace that freedom of thought thing!

Irma in North Carolina   October 27th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Yes, Sarah and John I think your end has come near. Hopefully Obama and Biden will win and we will not have to live in fear the next four to eight years. Boy the Mccain camp sure is having trouble with Sarah, they cant controll her any more. I think they should of picked a different V.P. All John could see in her was her looks. OH y the way how come Cindy doesnt go out and campaign for her hubby. As any ever listened to any of Michelles speeches, now if Sarah could talk like that they could of had a better chance.

Lucy   October 27th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Yeah, GOP, I would start gettting used to LANDSLIDE, with the Democratic Party attached to it. Sure ruined the MasterPlan of Rove and Bush to solidly position the GOP for years to come. I would have voted GOP, if they hadn't been so evil. Something to think about for next time. Give us a better fight.

Bitter in Texas   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

No Hillary = No Obama   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

This is a sad commentary on the state of politics in this country. But history repeats. When you have a corrupt, vacuous leader for 8 years as we have had, it opens the door to the rise of the "Transformer" – endowed with magical and perfect powers that will right all the wrongs. This is what has happened with this election. Obama has done nothing to deserve the Presidency except parade around having his enormous ego fed by people who believe in fantasy.

confused miami   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I believe it's Not so much the GOP but McCain and Palin who is losing for there party. They tought McCain could do what Bush did but Palin is no Cheney. If she is what the GOP puts there hope on in 2012 than help us all. She isn't ready for VP why people think she would be ready to president is unreal. I beliefe and I am not a republican that Bush/Cheney ruin there party and McCain made them look like fools. Bush lost respect overseas, McCain lost respect at home. How will they get it back? not with Palin as there leader.

surprisingly competitive   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Palin's shopping spree is a huge issue because it shows how corrupt the Palin/McCain camp is. They think they can accuse others of wasteful spending while they do it themselves.
It also shows how they prioritize what to spend money on.

If they think buying $150k warddrobe for appearance is more important that spending the money on ads, and running a campaign..

how do you think they'll spend taxpayers money if they run washington?
THIS IS PROOF THEY WOULD BE LIKE THE LAST 8 YEARS!

and yet, there are those who will vote for them anyway.

Ian   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

And how many of them will question the party itself? Like Ron Paul said it best over a year ago, that the Republican party has lost it's way.

Debbie   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

And don't forget how well the GOP knows how to supress the vote by purging likely Democratic voters...along with other nefarious tricks ... to steal elections.

Why else would John McCain confidently point to "close" states and promise that we'd all be up late election night, just like 2000?

deb in Colo   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Waiting for a McCain supporter to answer "Independent Vote" – I'd love to hear the answer. Because with McCain, I've just seen finger pointing and half truth/lies in this campaign.

I listened very carefully to both the DNC and RNC; and not one word did McCain say to me that would change my vote. And he's the one Republican I actually thought might be mid-ground enough to get my vote.

The Religious Right Republicans and "don't take my gun" Republicans can jump in a lake.

A LIBERAL VOTE!

Barb   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Love the fact that McCain is going to cut all of the budgets. Take a hatchet right across the board he claims. GUESS WHAT PEOPLE? One breath he says support the troops and the next minute he is going to cut budgets (INCLUDING DEFENSE). Which way is it?

CUTS RIGHT ACROSS THE BOARD-we have more unemployment so does that mean that the current budget is going to have to be spread out further meaning that each individual will get less?

CUTS RIGHT ACROSS THE BOARD–does that mean he will not have the finances to do off shore drilling that he proposes?

CUTS ACROSS THE BOARD–welfare–now that $3.99 to buy a pound of hamburg is going to be $1.50 to buy a half a pound and yet feed the same number of people?

Even individuals that have only received elementary education can figure this one out. Where are his experts? Head in the sand like an ostrich?

Gene   October 27th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I truly believe the election will be very close. McCain is starting to run a better campaign, he had a good week last week. It's all about how each campaign finishes. Barack has done nothing to hurt himself, but he needs to run through the finish line and not coast to the end. And I believe that he will do that. But his supporters need to do it as well

If you support McCain/Palin, you're dumb.

Dealt, Lisbon   October 27th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I heard a bit of McCain speech when I got home. And I pressed the button to switch to another station. The man was going on about the "mightiest army in the world", about "fight, fight with me".

He says he's been tested which is a bit puzzling. Tested when? On what? As far as I can recall he had the bead luck to become a POW, but so many other were tested the same way, unofrtunately. And not in a half century old war, where torture wasn't so "skilled" and mind-bending drugs didn't exist.

Then he says Obama is a risky proposition and that other nations won't dare face powerful America with McCain at the helm. Several dubious points here... first, it's doubtful the USA qill be able to so easily flaunt their armed power around the globe. Second, if McCain won't talk to Ahmadinejad, to Chavez, to talibans, to Castros, to Hamas... well, in short, to all that are likely to provide a threat, how on earth will he be able to avert a crisis without sending america's blood into harm's way? Third... it mau end up by not being McCain, but the very untested and trigger-happy Palin, at the helm.

David   October 27th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Repubs 'hope' may be counting on their voter supression tactics and people like Nathan Sproul- arrested for voter fraud and financially supported by Mccain-
the media doesn't talk about this because they're too busy talking about Acorn- but Mccain has dirty hands when it comes to voter fraud- google Nathan Sproul, CNN won't tell you about him!!

if CNN even posts this, that is...

undecided   October 27th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Why has CNN not covered the 2004 story of Obama's comments that he felt that the federal judges should step in and MANDATE that money should be taken from the rich and redistributed to the poor?

That sure sounds like Marxist / Socialist comments to me!!!!

Pete   October 27th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

My prediction in Obama in a landslide. Too bad though, he's not prepared to lead, and the more you hear about him the more radical he becomes. Bush derangement syndrome is such a dibilitating disease that those who have it cannot think rationally. It's not going to be pretty the next four years. But Obama and a democratic congress will screw things up so bad that the Republicans will be back in 4 years from now.

R. Squibbs   October 27th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

"Lots of red states closer than last week"?

I don't know what polls he's referring to, or what he's been smoking/huffing, but on the reality of planet Earth, VA, CO, NM, NV, PA, and OH are pretty much out of reach for McCain. He might take FL, NC, and MO, but he's going to have to fight like hell for them.

The only thing that could save McCain is if he suddenly shifted from appealing to the redneck/bigot base and started appealing to moderates and independents. But that would mean putting a muzzle on that dimwit running mate of his, which isn't about to happen.

I can see the future.........and Obama-Biden landslide on Nov. 4........

cindy   October 27th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

McCain has run nothing but an uneven and fractured campaign! He's never kept to his message and has continued to change throughout the campaign... He's never been able to raise the money and never had the ability to rally ground troops the way Obama has done... So laugh all you want Palin about Obama's community organizing skills but as far as many of us have a seen he's proven to be resourceful, steadfast and focused on message!!!!! That's what a leader does!!

McCain doesn't have what it takes to be President, not in any way and no how!!!!

Bring on the Elections   October 27th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

It's not over yet meaning the Elections.. Let us all pray Obama gets picked and we can start to heal as a nation. This election year has been unbelieveably nasty. McCain/Palin has tried to divide this country with all their name calling of Obama and actually saying certain states are more more patriotic than the other one. It's been a whirl wind dealing with 20 months of negative campaigning and constant mud slinging.

Please, please people get out to vote for Obama/Biden.

I am hoping for a landslide but am in no way shape or form expecting one. Fact is, I thought Kerry had it last time around only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Obama is running a much better campaign, better than Kerry and in my opinion also much better than McCain, but I feel a close race coming on.

THE DUMBING DOWN OF AMERICA IS FINALLY ENDING!!! Goodbye, George Dumbya Bush and cohorts!

It's high time for intelligent, reflective, inspiring, and all-inclusive leaders to lead us once again. It's high time for America to be back in her old, respected glory. It's high time for America to be that shining city on the hill again. It's high time for a new president to lead a grateful world once again.

It's high time to resume speaking correct English. Dumbya, during your retirement, please go back to school to learn how to speak properly. Pay attention to your grammar. Learn new adjectives so that when asked about people, you will not spew out the same tired sentence time after time, "S/he's a good person." It was frustrating listening to you speak. Try reflective thinking for a change.

It's time for a magna cum laude Harvard Law graduate for our president. Goodbye, President Dumbya, who earned (it's debatable whether he actually earned them) only gentleman C's.

Now, an appeal to my fellow change-minded Americans: PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE!! It will uplift all of us.

As a Swiss Citizen living in Mexico, I really hope that the American Citizen will vote for Obama! Maybe not everything will change immediately but I am sure the most important things will be done within the next year! Please keep in mind: You are not only voting for the president of the United States if not for the leader of the World! So if you vote for Obama the whole world will be better off. We will have less wars, more comunication, more friendships between countries. If you vote for McCain you will isolate your country more and more and it will be the continuation of George Bush. So the choice is yours! As a member of this world I ask you to really look in the future and see yourself in 4 years! There is only one choice: OBAMA

bos   October 27th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

What are the republicans so upset for..they had their 8 years to prove something..and apparently it didn't happen. Why is change such an awful thing when your current direction is towards the crapper? Give it a break! I was told if you pray really really really hard, and God doesn't give you the answer you want, then it's probably not meant to be. So repubs, here's a little bit of your own medicine. God is probably sick of these two "mavericks' and the division they've caused.

You have but one to blame. McCain did it. He was a man of respect and honro. He was a person that could be trusted. Then he stated the negitive adds "The hillton add" and it just got worse from there. Then he picked Palin as VP. A prety face is not a VP. She can try to spin her poor performance in the interviews all she wants to but she was still uninformed and just plain DUMB. Now she is trying to spring into the future to run in 2012. FAT CHANCE

Honestly, the GOP has been accusing Obama of measuring the Oval Office for drape... I think they need to look inside their own ranks for the one doing that. Palin has seemed to to forget SHE is NOT the one running for the Oval Office, she is #2 on the ticket.

Their candidate is, sadly, the one that has put them in this spot. Palin should never have been selected.... it cast doubt on McCain and, well, the less said about her the better.

Pam, Illinois   October 27th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

The Obama camp has run a clean, issue oriented campaign. Obama is the right guy at the right time. The last two elections are painful memories, but come November 4 our nation will truly celebrate a historical night with an Obama landslide. The dirty politics and the smear and fear tactics of the GOP/RNC won't work this time.

Xavier, Saint Louis, Missouri   October 27th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

GOP,

Can you say landslide victory? YES WE CAN!

Michelle, PA   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

There are some good individual Republicans who will be swept out with Obama's coattails, which is a shame. Overall though, I can't feel sorry for a party with such a lousy track record in governance and which encourages and bankrolls extremist lunatics like Sarah Palin, and Michele Bachmann to grab and hold power at just about any cost. Out with the old!

Rick CT   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

$5 trillion in deficits over the next 4 years will not fix the problem. That will happen after a landslide with no one to stop the Pelosi/Reid co-Presidency.

nelson   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

GOP has "no clue" about the average American as I see it.
If you want true change then get ou t and VOTE.. if you want the same old crap for another 4 yrs stay at home and eat your fat cookies

I trust Gallup   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Leave the polls alone...and GET TO ONE AND VOTE!! I trust what the Gallup organization says...this is what they do for a living (not for ratings). Obama is up by 10% – just imagine if he were white. This is still a biased country over 16o years after the Civil War and 40 years after the Civil Rights movement. WAKE UP! Can you really picture this country with Sarah Palin as our President? It could happen...DON'T LET IT!

Republican who voted early for "THAT ONE" last week (and double checked to make sure no Repub shenangians were going on)...

Enough   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I just spent 5 1/2 half hours in line to advance vote in metro Atlanta. If this is any indication of a landslide McCain can stick a fork in it....he's DONE. My prediction is Georgia will be a major upset and a major blow to McCain's campaign. I have never, EVER in my many years seen anything like this....lines that are 5-6 hrs long.

wonderwoman   October 27th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I'm with you Alabama...only I think Georgia is going Obama.

Just say no to Senator McNasty and Governor Pain.

I'm John McCain   October 27th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Hold on a minute......just a few thousand more negative ads and I may actually have a chance to make this close!

8 days and counting   October 27th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I think it will be a landslide in the top ticket and down ballot.

The McCain campaign has been a series of blunders and smears. The performance is the exact opposite of what the country needs right now. The McCain of 2000 probably would have gotten my vote but he sold his soul to the neo-cons.

In my local representative race, I recently got a piece of mail about pork implying the challenger was responsible for about seven different items. In the fine print, it turned out the pork was a list of items attached to the recent bail out bill. Implying a challenger who is not even in Congress can be responsible for pork on that bill is ridiculous. I am sick of the gross distortions of the truth from the GOP so my current representative has lost my vote.

On a lighter note, this whole 'across the aisle' thing doesn't work. The people in the House and Senate should be forced to sit Democrat, Republican, Democrat, Republican just like we used to sit boy, girl, boy, girl in kindergarten. Maybe if they're forced to sit that way, the concept of "We" rather than "Us vs Them" will sink in. It sounds silly but ....

Obama/Biden 20008

gl, Pittsburgh   October 27th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

This operative said rural voters and white downscale men had moved a bit toward the Republican ticket in recent days, making the battleground states somewhat more competitive.

The whole problem with the Repbulican ticket they never reached to any one other then their base. They need more then their base to win and they still having figured that one out yet. Sara Palin pick was for the base and that was all. Also, McCain was too too negative and didn't tell the people what he would do instead of what Obama won't do, that was one of McCain worst move keeping the negative forcues on Obama instead of on McCain.

KurtS   October 27th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Wow...not a single comment in defense of the GOP? LOL...they really deserve all the scorn American can muster for their greedy agenda cloaked in "patriotism". Some once die-hard Republicans I know are voting for Obama. Something needs to change before America is ruined. Obama is a good start.

It should be a landslide. The rethugs think the american people are so stupid. They can't see through the lies, fear tactics and how Sarah Palin is not smater then a 5th grader.

Paul, FL-TLH   October 27th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

We will see what happens WHEN it happens.

carol   October 27th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

We must keep voting for Sen Obama until the very last day....all votes are vital and we want him to be our next President....can't afford to let McCain and Palin anywhere near the White House!!!!
So, all we can do is encourage people to get out there and vote....vote...vote....so hopefully we can have a wonderful celebration on the evening of the 4th of Nov.
America is ready for this fine young man to take the lead and put our country back on track and work for ALL the people and make this
country respected around the world again.
This is a very historic moment in history and I am so excited and proud to have been part of it.....working on the Obama Campaign here in Florida has been absolutely fabulous and I would not have missed it for the world.

GO OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Steve   October 27th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Ummm, I think Mr. nameless Republican strategist made a mistake. If RED states are closer than last week, that's BAD for McCain. He wants BIGGER leads in red states (i.e wants them LESS close), and he wants the BLUE states to be getting closer.

Looks like psychologically, they've lost already...

Steven Segal   October 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

mav, FL   October 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

If John McCain cannot run his campaign, how will he run this country? His motive was never 'Country First', it was always somehow win election, no matter what it takes, reflected by his VP choice (completely ignoring Romney, Guliani, Huckabee).

We need someone who will not divide us, but unite and excite us through his leadership. Its easy to show negative side and criticise, but difficult to ignite HOPE and positive feeling. Yes we can change .... we will change .... we must change ..... status quo of Washington. Vote Early, Vote Obama!!

Winnie Hussein . . . in Montana   October 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Last night we watched "Children of Men", a bleak movie about a post-apocalyptic world. We watched the specials on the DVD, which were very interesting. Many of the economic and political issues discussed by the film makers were so relevant to today's situation. The worst thing a government can do is to lead its people through fear. This is the type of leadership we have had for the last eight years. McCain's entire campaign has been built on making the electorate afraid. Afraid of Sen. Obama's name, his racial identity, his background. McCain, Palin and their ilk have tossed about words like socialist, marxism, communist to incite fear in their base.

I refuse to be led by fear. These uneducated, hateful people are not making me afraid to make good, clear choices for myself. From my perspective, refusing to buy into their catchphrases and ideologies, the only thing they have made me fear, is them.

Jim in Raleigh   October 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

McCain is now citing a seven-year-old interview where Obama talks about the lost chance for redistributive change during the Civil Rights era. Perhaps McCain, who voted against an MLK day, doesn't understand the concept of redistributive power wherein minorities who had been outcast by white power might actually have a chance at shared leadership in our nation. McCain needs to get a grip!

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE, VOTE STRAIGHT DEM TICKET!   October 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

The ditto heads always says the polls are "tightening" yet they never give the polls. And quoting a single poll is not appropriate when the comparison is to an aggregate average of multiple polls. When RCP and CNN poll of polls are "tightening" in McCrypt's favor they are not ahead.

They are just using the same mathematical model that Hillary used during the waning days of her campaign.

The good news is that as long as the reptiles in the Reptilian party keep coming up with excuses, such as liberal media bias, the financial meltdown, poor Shrub ratings, socialism, dangerous threesome, etc. they will never recognize that America is NOT with the rabid religious right that now controls the party they will never do the things that need to be done to rout them out of the party and take a more moderate view.

Until that happens, the Reptilians will not have any policitical clout for decades.

McCain's way of reining in spending is:
- cutting public education funds
- cutting social security costs by making it subject to the stock market
- cutting healthcare costs by asking everyone to pay for their own
- cutting veteran benefits for education and healthcare
- cutting children benefits
The list goes on. Does anyone want this kind of spending cuts (if you are in the <95% bracket)?

Lee   October 27th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I am voting for McCain because I don't want to HOPE my president knows what he is doing.

And four years from now when everyone is saying "Wow, he was the worst president yet." I will be able to say "At least I didn't vote for him."

Frank   October 27th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

George W. Bush owes an apology to the people of the United States for destroying our pride, our economy, and killing our sons and daughters for nothing; an apology to the people of Iraq for making a mess out of their once thriving country (despite the presence of a brutal dictator there); an apology to the members of the RNC for destroying the party and its chances to win the White House and the Congress for who knows how many decades; and most importantly an apology to the souls of the young men and women he sent to be killed for a war that was unjust and unnecessary! They will be haunting him for ever and ever!!!!

Learn about this man Mr. Obama. Do NOT just go along with the promise of hope… I know we all need things to be better. Obama is not the answer he promises:

From Audacity of Hope:
"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

From Dreams of My Father:
"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."
"I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."

sandee in Portland   October 27th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Maybe they wouldn't be down if McCain would quit lying to the american public and talk about the issues, not Obama. Now he's talking against Bush's economic policies, when he voted for 90% of the time in favor of Bush's economic policies. You can't have it both ways. Flip, flop, flip, flop. Typical republican strategy. Obama has been on track throughout this campaign, only refinining some of his policies, not completely changing them. Flip, flop!

I have been a registered republican since 1964 and am ashamed my party has changed their values so much. They used to be fiscally conservative....not any more. Now all they are the party of right wing evangelicalists who want to bring church and state together. No way! Religious beliefs should be a personal thing, not a government ideology.

Lies, deceptions, fear-mongering, half-truths, pimping Sarah Palin, and now "Red-Baiting." Campaign McCain, it would seem, will not be satisfied until the entire country is torn apart by this election; an election they know they are going to lose. Has this man no shame? Patriotism should be about building and preserving this nation, not tearing it apart.

Eric   October 27th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

The upper 30's would be bad as well. As in 39/50 which is bad.

Rusty   October 27th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

"Independent - Is that an American flag defamed ?! Is this allowed?"

It is "allowed" because we live i a free society that allows people to defame the flag. It is in very poor taste.

If, like I've heard is true at Obama rallies, all signs are "hand-made" signs are made by the campaign and approved, this would be another example of McCain's staff running a very bad campaign.

ObamaVolunteer   October 27th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Let's wait patiently for the final count on November 4th.

Independent, no; defamaton of the Flag of the United States of America is not allowed; it would only get noticed if it was done at one of Senator Obama's rallies.

Eric   October 27th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

How come everyone is backing Obama and his "new found change" when he didn't change anything for the better as an Illinois senator?

The man voted for 300 tax increases and the economy of Illinois is ranked in the upper 30's of all states. His taxes hit the natural gas sector and the coal sector. But these are areas he will fix now? This man can talk great, but he hasn't PROVEN that he can DO ANYTHING. Come on people, your being ridiculous. You'd vote for Joe Camel if he was on TV enough and talked well. Give me a stinkin track record to work with Obama.

Just goes to show that this country is influenced by talk, not actions.

Marcus M in Sacramento   October 27th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I just have to comment on this. With all the early voting going on, aren't the numbers skewed by the fact that many Obama supporters have already voted? Doesn't early voting change the composition/demographics of "likely voters?" With more of Obama's supporters voting early and eliminated from "likely voters," don't the polls, (having fewer Obama supporters – since they've already voted) skew more toward McCain, tightening the race?

Abe   October 27th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Please don't be complacent!! Make sure you vote early as there will be long lines on Nov 4th. I have voted last Friday and I am calling everyone I know to make sure that they vote early as well. Polls at this time mean nothing!!

Did anyone listen to that self made demi-god called Hannity of FOX in his stupid documentary titled "why you should not vote for Obama". I was flipping channels and came across the useless program called "Hannity America" and this guy was just vomiting absolute trash. I invite you all to join me watch the idiot called Hannity when the results are in and Obama is declared the winner. I can't wait.

With all of the breaking commentary today, seems like McCain has to radically change his direction and strategy to compete with Palin as well as Obama. Unfortunately, this is a run-away train headed for a cliff. This is pretty much over.

Scott L   October 27th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Why is Palin story running front page on CNN most of the day?

Is no one disturbed by Obama's 2001 Radio Interview where he states the Supreme Court should do more wealth distribution?

He called the Warren Court "not radical enough".

Are you people even educated and understand what he is talking about?

Netherlands blogger Michael van der Galien reports that a group of young Dutch Socialists will be flying here to campaign for Barack Obama:
They would travel to the United States to campaign for Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for the presidency.
In fact, one of the demands of potential applicants is that they need to have a “great affinity with the Democratic Party and Barack Obama.”

The debate is over. Barack Hussein Mohammed Obama is a socialist.

Steven   October 27th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

I think McCain spends more time talking about Obama than his own VP Pick Sarah Palin. He has mentioned Obama more than his own plans to fix the economy. What strategy do they have to win? All I see is a cut and paste of random ideas that have recycled from elections past. There is always hope. The election is not over, but one must be realistic. To say that the polls are turning in the GOP's favor is not reflected in the polling numbers released to the public. If this was August or September, then I can see a chance for the McCain campaign to turn his campaign around and give Obama a run for money. But now, 8 days out, its way too little too late.

John the Banker   October 27th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

The whole world will celebrate Obama's presidential victory... we need America back as #1 leading the globe... making a brighter future for our kids, bringing diplomacy back, and having others (abroad)restore their faith in our wonderful nation.

McCain has run a diry dishonest smear campaign. He deserves to be defeated big time big time!!

Monica from Albuquerque   October 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

I was at an Obama Rally in Albuquerque this past Saturday night. It was the most diverse crowd I have ever been in. 45,000 white, black, aisan, hispanic, middle easterners, young and old, straight and gay were there. Earlier in the day, McCain was in Albuquerque where he drew a whopping crowd of 1,500. Later, he was in Southern NM (McCain territory) where he drew a crowd of only 3,000.

The Republican party is going to down in flames before our very eyes. Good bye to a party of intolerance, division, fear and smear. Hello to an ERA of hope, unity and a common purpose!!!

Tony in MT   October 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Brian   October 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

The GOP can be as hopeful as they like but there's no way they're getting my vote. I don't want McCain (and ESPECIALLY Sarah Palin) anywhere near the White House. The GOP had 8 years and flushed our economy down the toilet. Its time for a serious CHANGE right now.

Jason   October 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

It will be interesting to see how the GOP reinvents themselves, but I do not believe it will happen until the cut ties with the religious/rapture right. And that will not be happening until Obama wins his 2nd term against Palin on the top of the GOP ticket. Because, they still just don't seem to get it.... its not about the wealthy and powerful. Its about OUR people. And OUR people have awoken something fierce and I do not believe that this is a one time event.

The GOP will have to do something completely against their platform. Can't wait to see what they do to get back in the game but they are so damm thick headed I am pretty sure we are talking about 8 to 10 years.

Michael in Houston   October 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

What I never understand is why do people vote straight Democrat or Straight Republican. That is just ignorant if you ask me. How do you know that the person running for District Judge is the right person? Just because he is a Dem or Repub does not make him/her right for the position. For example, my vote is in and my support is behind Obama, there were local races here in Houston that I voted Republican. Why you may ask. Well without releasing thier identities, I really liked a four of the Republicans and have been impressed with thier work her in Houston. So don't be lazy folks, go line by line, it only takes an extra 5 to 10 minutes. Although I have leaned Democrat this election, there are some local Democrats that I would not vote for if they were running for the P.T.A. board let along a state or city government position.

Ohio, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I have been frustrated about the same thing for weeks. I have no idea what McCain/Palin plans are. They will say "we will fix this and that" but won't take the chance and say specifically what. (I guess they don't want to give ammunition). But then spend the majority of their speeches talking about the other side's plan. At least they have a plan.

cindy   October 27th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

What else can the Mccain camp say at this point? The numbers may have waivered a bit here and there but overall Obama has retained his lead and given the fact that we're only days away from election day this is not good news for McCain...

He's starting to look deflected already... he sees the writing on the wall and his campaign is at this point trying to keep up a front...

He and Palin are done for!

Someone should telle McCain to see the positive side of the events: at least, he still has his 7 houses and 13 cars...life can still go on for him!

Fed Up   October 27th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

The GOP has been defacing our country for 8 years they might as well deface the flag as well.

The BOTTOM Line..........   October 27th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

LETS GET IT.............EARLY VOTE PEOPLE!!

Matt   October 27th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Greg you got it wrong, it's "Greed Over Principles" lol

Independent but Leaning   October 27th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Capitalism, not Socialism, is what made this country great. The idea that you can keep what you earn is what turned this country into the industrial leader of the world.

If you reward laziness by redistributing income, you'll only get fewer people willing to work hard and more people taking welfare.

cool onlooker   October 27th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Keep hoping. This is the destiny of history. No better way. Admit it. And gracefully concede. Should work hard against fraud, plagarism on politics, economy, and even wardrobe.

dear neocons, had a lot of fun the last 8 years, but now it's time for a party with brains to take over. please don't let door hit ya, where the good lord split ya!!!!!

Frank Thomas   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

> can the GOP talk about how to fix problems insted of
> talking about obama!!

Apparently not.

Someone with some sort of pull internal to the Republicans has decided "slash and burn" is the ONLY way to go even though the polls are blatantly showing not only that it doesn't work, but is actually hurting them.

Thus this article.

The Presidential election isn't the only one the Republicans are shooting themselves in the head with these tactics.

Theresa   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Please, please, please... Obama supporters must all get out and vote. He needs every vote to ensure the landslide they are predicting. Do not get too cocky. We all MUST vote!!

We cannot face 4 more years of the same!!

Obama 08

Greg M.   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

win Obama win, your Baton Rouge supporters are with you as well as the state of Louisiana. We would like to take this time to invite you and your family to Baton Rouge and bring the Biden family also, we are eagerly awaiting the victory of positive change.

President Obama 08'............................................................

Sam Walker   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Republicans now know what it is like to be on the endangered species list themselves because during six years of total control of the federal government the republicans failed to do anything effective for 43 million Americans without health insurance and a terrifying amount of lob loss and also the republicans have failed to adequately connect with the increasing level of diversity of the American people. If the republicans had done a better job of "spreading the wealth" there may not be such a staggering amount of voters turning out to send them packing. I have a feeling that in the future the GOP will be a memory and democrats will be considered the political party of conservatives.

Josh In Virginia   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

McCain and his clown Tucker Bounds just lies this morning when they said Obama voted to increase taxes on “families” making as little as $42,000 per year. And that Obama voted 94 times to raise taxes. Fact check this please ppl its just lies…

I wish someone on the Republican ticket would get just ONE thing right without inventing half-truths or outright lies.

Maggie from Virginia   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Thank you OHIO... Enough about why we shouldn't vote for Obama. Why should we vote for McCain. I've been asking this for weeks. I gave up on getting an answer. I voted Friday for Obama.

I dispise bullies. Every attack moved me closer to Obama.

Speider   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Is it where McCain proudly touts his support of Bush policies 90% of the time? Is it where he raves about Joe the plumber, the guy without a license and who owes back taxes?

I really love when he threatens our "enemies" and dares nations to cross the line.

"Later in the week, this senior adviser said, the McCain campaign plans to launch what he called a strong “commander-in-chief for the close” ad."

Yes, I love that McCain sees this position in military terms. Not "President" but as a military leader of a military nation. It's Germany 1938 all over again.

Independent but Leaning   October 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

This nation is in trouble if we vote for Obama. Go McCain- we're counting on you.

Gerald in Georgia   October 27th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

I am reminding all Obama supporters that read this blog, please don't take anything for granted. Go out and vote and encorage everyone to vote. Don't think for one second that we can rest on what the polls say. I went to early vote today here in Macon, Georgia and the lines were out the door and down the side walk so we can't take for granted that these are mostly Obama voters. We have to stay on task and don't fall prey to the news papers and polls and tv pundits. Get out and VOTE OBAMA/ BIDEN and early vote if you can. The lines are only going to get longer!!!!!

WE NEED THIS CHANGE AND WE NEED IT NOW!!

President Barack Obama   October 27th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

GOP get your slides out .........& ride with Barack down that Presidential Slope..... And prepare for the LANDSLIDE Baby!!!

Oh Yeah, Dont forget to..................................

Barack YOUR Vote08!!!

Donkey Party   October 27th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Easy choice this year, you can vote for HOPE (Obama), or you can vote for FEAR (McCain).

donna smith   October 27th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

If you look back at the McCain campaign you can see the ship slowly sinking. Someone who wants to run the United States of America, Should be able to run a better campaign. I hope of McCain wins he does a better job as president then he has at leading his campaign.

J P from MD   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Obama supporter must vote. Because that is all that count. Also, Why is it that every time McCain wants to draw contrast between himself and Obama, the contrast has to have a Civil Rights or Race angle. In a nutshell, McCain want people to think that Obama want to give their money to blacks and Illegal immigrants. Not only that, but no one is reporting on the fact that McCain has stated that he would veto his own senate votes, on Meet the Press. Every McCain ad is an attempt to scare, not persuade, people into voting for him. As if Obama, is out to still people’s money. Can a politician give people a fair shot at opportunity, without being demonized? This type of racial fear will have a lasting effect on minorities, and immigrants, far after the campaign is over. Someone, please get to the bottom of this issue, where McCain states he would veto his own senate votes on Meet the Press Sunday.

jaye   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

The republicans still have a couple dirty tricks up their sleeves – they have the white house backing them and are preparing for a very nasty surprise this week.

FactCheck   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

The problems run very deep through the RNC. When the Democrats were dealt crushing losses in 2000 and in 2004, they recouped, came up with an effective strategy (thanks to Dr. Dean) and were poised for 2006 and 2008. The RNC simply do not have the discipline. Half of them are going to push for Palin to lead the ticket in 2012 (if she isn't in jail by then) and the other half will continue the in-fighting. The RNC used to be a party of fiscal conservatives that preached small government and family values. Over the lat decade, they have turned into a party of religious wing-nuts who pray on fear, give hand-outs to Wall Street and poise up candidates with highly questionable ethical character.

They have truly lost their way.

Alabama Voter   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I think a lot of the polls are wrong. I think AL is gonna be closer than they think this year. I don't know where they get their numbers but everyone I know is voting Obama.

Stick a fork in that pig, he's done   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

He is STILL on the attack. He still talks about Obama more than the issues. If he doesn't get it, he never will. This is why I won't vote for him. He's so angry and his sense of entitlement (because he is a war hero) is astounding.

Did you all hear about the 81 year old man who tried to vote for Obama in the booth, three times, but it kept switching to McCain? Not a coincidence. The GOP will do anything to win.

TyWebb   October 27th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I'm hopeful for a landslide.

rob   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

What are they hoping for ? Sarah to change a dress–give me a break.

Jenny   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I see McNothing has changed his message again today. This is his message:

Dear Billionaires: Barack Obama wants to cut your taxes and give that money to hard-working Americans. Please vote for me because Cindy is so pissed that she will have to pay more money in taxes, my free cell towers will be taken away, and on top of that she will forge a big "L" on my forehead if I don't win.

Charlie Bradley   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Republicans are seeing the writing on the wall :)

Paula Wesley   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I've never heard of the VP being more popular and having larger rallies than the person running for President. Poor judgement in picking her McCain, poor decision. If he thought Romney would have stolen the limelight, Palin is worse.

joey   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

i hope a landslide victory will give him the tools to change this nation

Ken   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I know Republicans try to be the Patriotic ones, but that sign violates flag code...

Obama 08

Joe   October 27th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

CNN, where is the discussion about Obama's audio with a reporter back in 2001 when he talked about redistributing? Gee, I guess it's not important to let people know that this guy is a socialist.

vic   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Listen to McCain today...nothing but nasty attacks and no real answers. Listen to Palin... being all defensive over spending campaign money on clothes and no real answers for our country.
McCain and Palin all only for themselves – they're for dividing our country instead of uniting it.
They want to win....and thats all!

arka   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I really hope that people see the truth out there! I'm all for McCain! he has more experience and he is all for helping Americans while Obama is about adding more crap for Americans! He is all about more taxes and thinks he is helping but he isn't!

j   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I guess we should prepare for yet another version of the McCain/Palin campaign. This campaign has no clear, consistent message or vision. If they ran on what they were really about, people would realize it's the same old policies that led us into this mess in the first place. So they run their campaign based on gutter politics. I think America will be in big trouble if McCain/Palin are elected. We won't end our dependence on foreign oil, we won't develop clean alternative energy, the workers of America will contiue to lose their jobs and receive lower wages – in short, we'll be worse off 4 years from now with McCain/Palin at the helm. Don't be fooled by their scare tactics. Vote for Hope-Unity-Change – Vote for OBAMA!

Greg in Mpls   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

You had your chance for the last 8 years Grand Oil Party.

Time for something new.

Donkey Party   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

The RepubliCONS have always believed they can win any election by lying to you. But since that isn't working, now they are trying lying to themselves.

Susan in NC   October 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I'm hopeful, too, but NOT for McCain/Palin........Obama/Biden for America!

BTW, where are Gov. Palin's medical records? As one-half of the Republican Party ticket and someone, Heaven forbid, who could truly be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, we as Americans need to demand her medical records!

carlo   October 27th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Perhaps if the GOP tries to look out for people beside their country club elitist friends and stop lying to those poor, uneducated white people about working for them and all the while robbing them blind, they would have better luck. Those poor voters don't realize that the wealthy GOP elites have been the recipients of welfare for years. They get bailed out with tax-payer money, yet actually convince poor people that blacks and minorities are taking "their wealth". The people who are uninformed and voting for McCain deserve whatever they get.

Paula Wesley   October 27th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Palin has gone ROGUE. This makes McCain look WEAK. If he can't control his own VP and campaign, how can he control Congress and the US which are bigger and harder?

Tim   October 27th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

EARLY VOTE!!!!!
EARLY VOTE!!!!!

We want 100% of hose eligible to vote!!!! Everyone, take at least two people with you to the polls to vote. We are hitting the streets in NC. I like many people are taking Nov 4th off in order to drive people without transportation to the polls!!!!

rob   October 27th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

obama's "closing remarks' were amazing.

while mccain continues to talk about how terrible a person obama is.

it's just disheartening that someone as honorable as john mccain has become such a cynical old man.

Obama/Biden '08

Don   October 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

The Republican rat lines are growing every day. Get out and vote early. Make it happen for Barack Obama.

Evan   October 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Something interesting happaned on Meet the Press. McCain said he is going to win a "close election" and that it would be really "close". Sounds like 2000 to me. If McCain wins by a "slim margin" like he predicted something is wrong and there is fraud or something. It it happens and I hope it doesnt, but if it does I hope that Americans will declare that its wrong and that McCain shouldn't be president.

There are already signs of voter purging, so be careful people.

Blue Florida   October 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Obama's not the best, but McCain has self-destructed, far from honorable, otherwise he would have my vote in a second. But his campaign is too negative. You can be biased, or you can be realistic. You can be scared of words like socialism, or you can think for yourself, which is what seems to be the trend (read:polls).

The New Civil War has begun (Sons of the Founders vs. The Socialists)   October 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

If Obama wins and drags in a large Dem congressional majority with him, expect a 1500-2000 point freefall in the Dow before the end of next week.

Businesses everywhere are going to hunker down into full scale "bunker" mode, slashing employees, cutting operations, curtailing spending and most importantly doing whatever necessary to survive the next four years of the most business-hostile presidencies ever in America.

Folks, you cannot in one breath say you're for the little guy and then in the very next breath wage economic warfare on his employer. If you're really for the worker, do whatever possible to create an environment where the worker's boss keeps the worker employed.

deb in Colo   October 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I pray it is a landslide.

The Republicans had 6 of 8 years in power and look where we ended up. Time to give the other side of the aisle a chance to make things better.

Paul in FL   October 27th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

After 8 years of the most disasterous administration in recorded history they Democrats should win this election walking away.
If the American voters elect J. McCain the rest of the world will, with great justification, write us off as hopeless idiots.

Bullwinkle doesnt want Palin back in Alaska   October 27th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It will be a LANDSLIDE!

Too many people are fed up with Do-Nothin, Greedy Government.

We the people will speak LOUDLY this year and set a precendent that NO future Government will be allowed to be only for the Rich.

Turner in Washington State   October 27th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I am a 47 year Old White Male and an Independent minded voter. I have just watched perhaps the most incredible closing argument speech of my generation.
Barack Obama just gave a speech the rivals perhaps the best of King and JFK combined. While I have always been proud to be an American, Obama delivered a speech that made me ‘more proud’ to be an American than at any time in my life with his message of Unity and hope. While I had not made up my mind in this election I have to admit that as of TODAY, I will proudly support Barack Obama because I now feel that He truly supports ‘We The People’.

tg   October 27th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

GOP your time is up because Barak is down with GOD!

Young Republican   October 27th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

This is just really sad. Many uninformed voters will vote for Obama and then just check next to every candidate in his column, I'm sure without even looking at their names.

Sad day in America when people vote everyone in because of who is on the top of the ticket.

ohio   October 27th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

can the GOP talk about how to fix problems insted of talking about obama!!!!!!!!!!!!
