The Stevens verdict is another setback for the GOP.
The Stevens verdict is another setback for the GOP.

(CNN) – Ted Steven's guilty verdict Monday afternoon could mean the end of the Alaska lawmaker's 40-year tenure in the Senate and serve to inch the already emboldened Democratic Party closer to 60 seats in the Senate, recent polls of the Alaska race suggest.

In an Ivan Moore Research poll of the Alaska Senate race conducted earlier this month, entirely before the verdict was handed down, Stevens and Democratic challenger Mark Begich were statistically tied. Several other recent surveys have also suggested the race is neck-and-neck.

But the prospect of Stevens, first elected to the Senate in 1968, facing a tough reelection race was unthinkable only a few months ago. After all, the last Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Alaska is former presidential candidate Mike Gravel. Gravel served two terms, from 1969 to 1981, before embarking on his unsuccessful presidential bid 26 years later. Stevens is also an icon in the state, responsible (and now infamous) for securing billions of federal dollars for the state, including the ill-fated "bridge to nowhere."

But Steven's reelection hopes now appear increasingly slim in what is a boost to Democrats seeking to reach the filibuster-proof 60 seat majority.  It's also too late for the GOP to replace Stevens on the ballot with a different candidate - that deadline passed more than six weeks ago and the ballots have already been printed.

“This race was a dead heat before Stevens was convicted,” said CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. "The Democrats are now most likely one step closer to a filibuster-proof majority of 60 Senate seats next January.”

Meanwhile, asked if there is likely to be any national political impact of the Stevens verdict, a prominent Republican strategist close to the McCain campaign said, "Just one more seat."

"It can't really impact a national environment where 12 percent say things going well," the strategist told CNN's John King.

GOP = Greed Over Principle

theogracias   October 27th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

He says he's innocent. Sounds familiar, nobody from Alaska seems to be able to accept responsibility...only gifts.

MemeForObama   October 27th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

The media and all these newspapers need to stop calling an obama will: we still have a week till the election day.

Doing this is setting Obama up for a big loss to Mcain/palin
Pls stop all this till it's over cos it aint over yet.

Go out and VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN

Ouch. Bad time to be from Alaska, teehee.

Seriously though, having lived there myself, I just wanna say, don't judge the state by this clown and his silly friend, Palin.

Especially not the Southeast end of the State....

Jigga   October 27th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

They should let him slide, they are all corrupt anyway. With the little bad he did, I'm sure 40 yrs in the senate produced some good for the betterment of the people – Hopefully.

Jason   October 27th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Are there ANY politicians from Alaska that aren't corrupt criminals? Any?

Pat Riot   October 27th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Never in the history of civilization has a government not turned tyrannical in good conscience. Freedom was the most short lived idea man has ever had. Maybe people will tell stories about it one day.

Senator Stevens should retire..He just doesn't get it! Same thing
for McCain.. I see that Palin did distance herself from him almost
immediately. sinking ships lose all their rats.. GOP has major
problems in this election rotflmao

Shakur   October 27th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Could it be, the hell of the last eight years may be over?! halleluyah!

S Lyster   October 27th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

With Stevens' conviction one might want to say that the wheels continue to come off the McCain-Palin campaign.

Yet unless someone throws that annoying mini-spare out of the trunk, there just may not be any more tires to come off.

And as for Stevens claiming he is innocent – about 80% of folks in prison say the same thing. "Honest, judge, I was only the wheel man."

Betty the maid   October 27th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

This is exactly why Obama will be our next president...the Republicans simply do not deserve another 4 years after 8 years of destroying our country and leaving it in shambles. Bush and his cronies were and are an absolute disgrace.

(BTW...that entire Palin family should be on Jerry Springer, what a bunch if white trash thay are!!!)

Betty

Fritz   October 27th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

There seems to be something with Alaskan politicians that seems to breed corruption and ethical issues. Stevens still will fight this. I do not think he views that he did anything wrong.

Camden from mt   October 27th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Oh dear! Too bad so sad repubs. You had your eight years and now the democrats get a shot at things. I wonder what got you in this mess?

Maybe its, the United States views slowly changing on moral standpoint.

Or maybe its the extremely unpopular war not just at home but internationaly.

Or maybe its the idea of giving wealthy people breaks when they don't need them.

Or maybe its the idea of drill, drill, drill, when we should be the country leading the way to a bright green future.

Well who knows better luck next go around.

BK   October 27th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

No one guilty of corruption charges should be allowed to run. We need to hold our politicians to higher standards. This includes politicians of all parties. Corruption is an offense that could result in a President being impeached, so certainly a senator guilty of it has no business running.

Obama/Biden 08!   October 27th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

What in the world?   October 27th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

What is he convicted of? Write an entire story for goodness sakes, not just more build up from one party to another. If the crime was so bad, why was the race neck and neck during the trial?

What in the world? CNN, where is the news in the story? What was the actual conviction charge?

Philly   October 27th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Time for Stevens to really find out what a "series of tubes are"..... In prison.

mbg   October 27th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Palin thinks now he will do the right thing??? Does she think he gets off with a slap on the wrist?? Palin took money from the same oil company that now has to much control. Sorry Gov. Palin your stories dont add up you are probably next in front of the Judge!

Dick in Sioux Falls   October 27th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

I see John McCain trying to scare America into voting for him, because Obama's election, combined with a filibuster-proof 60% Congress, would be out of control of the Republican Party..

America, you have said America is going in the wrong direction. I agree, and suggest you give the Democratic Party the chance to really start us in a new direction, a direction of benefit to Middle America and all America because of the exciting new image of America in the world; as well as a new and vigorous economy in this country.

Steve in NC   October 27th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Sarah Palin and her corrupt ways, unethical behavior and abuse of power are next. She must be held accountable. Shame on Mccain for selecting her. So much for country first! These two are pathetic!

Don't be afraid to vote for a Democrat. The Republicans had control for six years. Can the Democrats possibly do any worse? Highly doubtful in these tough economic times and it would not bode well for them come the next election. Besides, it runs counter to Obama's tax cuts policy in his economic platform.

Rorschach   October 27th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Has anyone researched the possibility that 2008 may be the year of the straight-ticket voter?

All my life, and I'm 52, I never voted straight ticket – until 2006. That was my first straight-Dem ballot and I cast that vote because I really believed it was time for the Republicans to not only take a break, but remember who they're supposed to be working for.

Voted straight Dem again this year. I wonder if that's happening much across the country, with the general dissatisfaction with GOP policy and the financial meltdown?

Dan from Philly   October 27th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Palin said it was a sad day for Alaska. Why is it a sad day when a crook is convicted of a crime he committed. Sounds like a pretty good day for Alaska to me!

Lamar   October 27th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

This is another example of the liberal bias in juries. And of course the liberal media would report the story. Where's the balance? We need stories of liberal officeholders who may be convicted of crimes in the near future.

KS   October 27th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

What is truely amazing is how long he got by with it. Also don't overlook who was the Executive Director of Stevens PAC. It was non other than Sarah Palin. America this is the sort of Executive experience Palin will bring to Washington.

With all that is going on in the political enviroment these days, I hope people will be a bit more concious of the implications of such arrogance.

I wanted to comment on Sarah Palin and for her to even mention Stevens is quit ironic considering she has made her own mistakes to include abuse of power – I'm from Alaska and as an Alaskan I will not vote for anyone that has demonstrated a lack of character and has placed themselves above the law and the ethics oath that each one of them has raised their hand to and then chose to do what ever they wanted instead of doing the very best they could while serving the PEOPLE.....

No to Palin, not in '08, not in '12 or any time!

No to Stevens, he has served his time, NOW is the time for a New Presence in Washington to represent Alaska!

I'm almost starting to feel sorry for the Republicans. Almost, but not quite. McCain's selection of Palin as a running mate all the while touting "change", and their right-wing base screaming "socialist" and calling for even more draconian policies, proves neither the party nor the base has learned anything. Maybe they never will.

Nick B, Watertown SD   October 27th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Says a lot about the republican party and Alaska when they'll consider reelecting a corrupt old codger like Stevens.

s   October 27th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

And immediately Palin comes out saying she was elected to fight this corruption. Duh...after she was found to have violated AK state ethics law too! This lady is not just a hypocrite but also surreal. Yet look at all those folks out there cheering her on. As Peggy Noonan said, she is a cancer to her party. Yeh, well then what is she to the US?

and what needs to happen now???

He needs to be completely stripped of ALL his federal retirement benefits. He deserves not a single penny more of taxpayer money.

sp harris   October 27th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Congress declared that when federal employees (military and civilian) are convicted of a felony, they forfeit their retirement pension.

It should work the same way for members of Congress. But does it?

Can you find out if they created one set of standards for other federal employees and more liberal ones for themselves?

'Just one more seat.'

It starts with one seat. That one seat will multiply...from a seat, to a lazy boy, to a love seat, to a couch, to a sectional, etc.

I have seriously lost respect for McCain, totally, period!!!!!!!!!!! Now they want to kill Obama. Is this America we want? let people decide, don't plant a seed of hatred and race. Don't devide us, lose honorably.

MissouriMom   October 27th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

No one NEEDS to be a Senator for 40 years – that is, in itself, a problem.

It makes it too easy for corrupt men to become corrupt politicians, milking the system for all it is worth. They don't call it the Corrupt Old B*st*rds club for nothing...

And, shouldn't Palin be next? She did pretty much the same thing as mayor of Wasilla - getting her PERSONAL home built by the same company she "awarded" that Wasilla Sports Center contract to...

I'm just saying...

Jody Monroe   October 27th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Why don't we have term limits? No congress person should be allowed to serve more than 8 or 10 years max. After that time, they become too ingrained in the system to make a difference.

Griff   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Get the fact's. Read the real story, say's CNN... What is the real story CNN? Barack Obama is a Socialist, Fact!... Europe can survive without the USA... Canada is 60% British- 30% French. Europe deal in euro's... Except fot Dizzi-Liz, who still play's Queen. with her Pound... But that can change in a Moment! Well CNN? What is the "REAL" Story.. You do not Qualify as a Dictator...

What a travesty! Another person entrusted with the public's money and he couldn't keep his fingers out of the cookie jar. Another powerful, wealthy person falling to Greed. What are these people thinking when they do such contemptable things?

Art in California   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

This could create an opening for Sarah – problem is she can't run for both positions at once – VP and Senator.

I can't wait to read the next article where Palin reacts to this verdict.

Brian   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

I am beginning to see a wave of justice that is so prevalent I may have to even say it could possibly go to far in cleansing our democracy. But, in this case, we've waited along time to send a message to others that are corrupt.

Good for you Alaska! I honestly did not see this coming but you've done well.

Billy   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Some three dozen workers at a telemarketing call center in Indiana walked off the job rather than read an incendiary McCain campaign script attacking Barack Obama, according to two workers at the center and one of their parents.

Williams' daughter told her that up to 40 of her co-workers had refused to read the script, and had left the call center after supervisors told them that they would have to either read the call or leave, Williams says.

"They walked out," Williams says of her daughter and her co-workers, adding that they weren't fired but willingly sacrificed pay rather than read the lines. "They were told [by supervisors], `If you all leave, you're not gonna get paid for the rest of the day."

Beverly, NYC   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

End the drama vote Obama. You republicans should take the next 4 years off, rebuild your party, come up with viable plans for governing and let the democrats handle things.

One down two more to go? Remember the only poll that matters is Nov 4th make it a short night for the Fox crowd. I hope Sean Hannity cries like the B that he is.

I hear that Stevens has plenty of grounds to appeal the trial but I do hope this knocks him out of the race. Good riddance as far as I am concerned. I would be curious what would happen if Alaskans reelect him. That state is so corrupt, it would not surprise me.

It's funny how Republicans are warning people of the dangers of a senate which cannot be filibustered... they say it's like driving a car with no breaks.

Well, first I think it's funny that they refer to themselves as "the breaks"... which is very fitting.

Second.. they're basically saying that they want to keep a senate that will not be able to actually achieve anything. They actually want a senate with nothing but gridlock.. so later they can blame a senate with a democratic majority (of 1 vote) for not getting things done.

Tom in New Hope, MN   October 27th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

The Republican way is really paying off for them! This is just another reason we need to change Washington. We need term limits in congress because power corrupts! Vote wisely!

S. Pellchek   October 27th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

It's not "Steven's", it's "Stevens'"

Red, Red WHINE!!   October 27th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Ok, I've had my fun with this Stevens headline. But in all honesty, we can't really blame Mr. Stevens. It's a matter of peer pressure. We have to lay the blame at the feet of his fellow republicans who set the standard and expectations so low, on a daily basis. We have to blame ourselves for voting for any republican, and allowing them to feel its ok to be immoral, corrupt, selfish and incompetent.

We have to be the judge in this one, we must deliver the sentence for this one. We need not deliver the sentence on a man that is over 80 years old, we must sentence the entire GOP instead. We must not vote for a single one of them, not until they clean their act up and start working FOR us rather then AGAINST us!

Vote Dem's across the board, let that be the punishment. Let them read their sentence in a sweeping rush of democratic victories across the nation. It's time for change. As Obama say's, from the bottom up...and in this case, that means EVERY republican out there..from the BOTTOM UP, must be sentenced to defeat by US...the voters!

J.L.   October 27th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Getting just what he deserves. If there is a good example of power in Washington corrupting you when you've there too long, Senator Stevens was the poster child. He didn't think he needed to play by the rules of us regular folks. Special set of rules for special people. And that "Bridge to Nowhere" that Sarah Palin was hammered about since she became McCain's running mate, that's Stevens' little pet project. Didn't even want to let it go and free up the money to help with the after-effects of Katrina. He just got angry like a spoiled little kid... yeah, this is one of the elder statesman of the party touting "Country First"...

Dan, TX   October 27th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

There is a good chance he'll still win his seat. After all, Alaskans elected Palin Governor. Why would a felony conviction keep them from electing Stevens?

NO big deal. The media has annointed the Democrats to rule the US. There is no need for an election. I expect there to be no Republicans in the Senate or House after this election (even though they aren't all up for reelection). After all, the media rules the world!

But wait a moment, who did Palin support?
Oh yeah, Senator Stevens.
But, didn't she take on the old boy network, at least, that's what she said.

Palin is a product, being hawked to the red state right wingers and they are buying the myth.

Next thing they'll tell you that Jesus spoke to Palin directly and told her to run for President in 2012.
