Gov. Sarah Palin reacted to Sen. Ted Stevens' guilty verdict Monday.
Gov. Sarah Palin reacted to Sen. Ted Stevens' guilty verdict Monday.

RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) — Sarah Palin said Monday Sen. Ted Stevens' guilty verdict "is a sad day for Alaska."

"This is a sad day for Alaska and a sad day for Senator Stevens and his family," she said on the tarmac at Richmond International Airport. "The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company up there in Alaska that was allowed to control too much of our state. And that control was part of the culture of corruption that I was elected to fight, and that fight must always move forward regardless of party affiliation or seniority or even past service.

"As Governor of the State of Alaska, I will carefully now monitor the situation and I'll take any appropriate action as needed. In the meantime, I ask the people of Alaska to join me in respecting the workings of our judicial system and I'm confident that Senator Stevens from this point on will do the right thing for the people of Alaska," she said.

Palin did not respond when asked if she will vote for Sen. Stevens next week and promptly boarded her campaign plane.

It will always amaze me how the republicans will never admit to doing anything wrong, even after being caught and convicted. Just excuse after excuse, and blaming everyone but the one that did wrong. You guys would never allow that sort of crap from your kids – why do you tolerate it in your politicians? Ted Stevens didn't get into trouble becasue the media was mean to him. You republicans sound like my father after Nixon got in trouble: "The only thing he did wrong was to get caught."

john   October 27th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Sarah must be a little nervous that she will be next in line for criminal charges! Hopefully Alaskans will give them both the boot.

tishoogle   October 27th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Yes, wondering when charges are going to be taken
for Palin having her house built for free by AIP! Im waiting!! She
is not to be trusted!

Dal CA   October 27th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

DIVA , Hey the alsaka newspaper said this
"Alaska's Anchorage Daily News, said governor Mrs Palin was "too risky" to be one step away from the presidency."

What was McCain thinking was he using is big head or the small head

BKrause   October 27th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Palin, whose own ethical behavior while in office is under scrutiny, needs to reflect on the sadness of her own life and actions.

The Republicans talk about conservative and family values and Christians values But have the biggest CORRUPTION AND LIES among them. This is a promble people we can'nt vote in another Republican look at the results corruptions, lies and failed poliicies BushMccain/Palin say NO

Dori in AZ   October 27th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Stevens and Palin worked closely together. She has also been corrupt which is now becoming more and more evident on a daily basis. In the meantime, she has been fueling rallies with hateful comments, and now 2 men have been arrested in a plot to kill over 100 black Americans, including Sen. Obama.

What is wrong with this picture????

Wonder what skeletons would come out if they should start investigating Palin? For started, there's that pesky ethics violation thing which has somehow been beaten down in the din of the final weeks of the campaign.

Michael watching from Canada   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

I would like to thank Sarah Palin, as Governor of Alaska, for having awarded the $40B natural gas pipeline contract to TransCanada.

Its good that Alaska is outsourcing jobs to Canada.

Sarah   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

I respect the judicial system of Alaska
Both senator and governor abused power and have ethical problems and they were caught guilty

Susan   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Is abuse of power a criminal offense?

Shy   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

I wonder if she will be quilty in her case also. Remember her lumber for her house was part of the arena built in Alaska.

Louis   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Given the recent findings regarding Palin with Troopergate and Stevens with finances, it seems Alaska has it's own unique standards for the ethics of elected officials.

Andrew   October 27th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Hey Miss Maverick, he is a criminal. Broke the law. Get it? If it is a sad day for him and his family, maybe he can retreat to his posh retreat built on corruption.

By the way, how is that secession coming? Still supporting those folks whose hatred of the American gov't exceeds the icy cold of Glacier Bay?

The GOP lives in a house without mirrors.

Bea   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

It's all about Alaska…..

Jose, San Diego   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

The heat gets a little closer to the Princess herself now; she didn't fight the culture of corruption with big oil in Alaska, she turned the trough in her direction — that natural gas pipeline deal is very shady indeed. So are her contacts with her husband's employer. Not to mention the Wasilla athletic complex scandal. She is a little less gruff than Stevens, but no less corrupt.

Obama/Biden 08   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Of course, Palin's two years as governor have done nothing to stop this. Oh well.

Noorah   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Palin's own face is a sad sight for not only Alaska, but the United States as a whole.

will   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

To the people in Alaska will you now vote for Barack Obama? You have a ridiculous Governor and a crazy old fool for a Senator who is on his way to jail. Will you please do the right thing?

Michele, Pittsburgh, PA   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

If Gov. Palin's such a maverick, when asked if she would vote for Stevens, she should have said emphatically "No, I have always fought against corruption in my own state and my own party." Her silence says much. Congratulations, Gov. Palin, you are now officially a Washington insider.

alaskan ethics   October 27th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

NO! It was a sad day when mccain picked someone that ABUSED HER POWER!! We know now she gets her ethics from stevens.

john jenkins   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

I truly hope that Obama/Biden reopen the investigation of Palin's troopergate scandal when the get into office. Perhaps that's why they've been downplaying the findings of Palin's unethical abuse of power as Alaska governor since those findings came to light.

alpha_nu_916   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

when a common crook is convicted for stealing, does gov. palin think to herself "it is a sad day for him and his family."? probably not . . . so why treat sen. stevens any different?
this man stands for everything gov. palin espouses to be against – the typical corrupt washington insider who loves earmarks. yet gov. palin was a director of his PAC and will still likely vote for him.
what a hypocrite.

MissouriMom   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Oh, puleeze…

Isn't the next move to bring similar charges against Palin? I mean, she DID get her PERSONAL HOME built by the same company she awarded that Wasilla Sports Center contract to… I'm just saying…

She's as corrupt as Stevens.

Caven   October 27th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Too funny….

"Palin did not respond when asked if she will vote for Sen. Stevens and promptly boarded the campaign plane."

In some ways shes amazingly cute, like a 3 year old who runs away when he/she knows shes done something wrong but here mommy/daddy coming.

Jude   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Send them both home packing….She (Palin) was voted to fight the big cats but as they say…Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely…so Palin became one of them and abused her powers!

Enough Said…She should be fired and sent home packing.
Hasta La Vista Baby!!!

Sad he got caught.
Sad he was found guilty.
Sad he most likely won't get re-elected.

It seems that the largest export of Alaska is bribery,Treason and sedition.Surely these shills for McSame/Failin,understand that secession is treason. The Republic of Texas nuts tried this some years back, and guess what? They ALL went to jail.It seems that ignorance trumps understanding in the party of hate. The only regret I have is some truly nice Republicans are being dragged down to the Neandrethal level of the party loyalists.By the way, with 7 million surveiance cameras at the Pentagon, can anyone explain how we missed the picture af a rather large aircraft impacting.I guess they were all off for King George II and his lost seven minutes.

Paul from Iowa   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

It seems like the politics in Alaska runs to the beat of a different drummer. Governor Palin says she will now carefully monitor the situation. Money seems to be miss handled by Alaska's government.

We don't need that type of judgement as a Vice President as a 'learn as you go' style. We need a right from Day One judgement that Obama and Biden will bring to the table.

America has just gone through 8 years of bad judgement with Bush and Cheney. McCain's judgement for one is he picked Palin as his VP choice.

Vote for the real change candidates November 4th. – Obama/Biden

Meg   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Wow! She threw the guy under the bus. How sad is that! I hope he also turns on her. John McCain better watch out. Soon, she will turn on him, if that hasn't already been happening.

CNN, please post this.

Jim in Raleigh   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Of Course she'll vote for Stevens. Does anybody doubt that? Since when would breaking a law, or violating ethics (oh, hi there, Sarah) get in the way of a Republican running for office?

Jennifer   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

One down, one to go. Sarah Palin…lets not forget your dealings with stevens. so please coorporate with the feds if you are approached about your dealings with stevens..in alaska. I am pretty sure everyone has skeletons in their closet

GJetson   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

What? No 'Sen Stevens is completely exonerated' statement like she gave after the police firing report said she was in violation of state ethics laws?

Amazed   October 27th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Yea Right!

Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Republicans= Me First Country Last   October 27th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Why has no one covered the story about Palin and her house? Supposedly Todd had some "contractor buddies" help him build it. Conveniently right down the road the big hockey rink was being built at the same time with the same "contractor buddies". During that time she,as mayor, made it so that building permits weren't required. Also very convenient was the fact that Palin and the hockey rink had the same building materials supplier. She's a crook people.

She's worse than Stevens ever thought about being.

Amazing, not only has Palin destroyed McCain’s bid for the Presidency but also she now threatens to destroy the Republican Party. Had she clearly disavowed Stevens’ actions, like Obama did regarding the Rev. Wright, it would have shown some integrity. Calling her a ‘diva’ is just too kind.

Hello to you all from across the Atlantic,

What amazes me the most is not that he's corrupt – he's a 20+ year veteran politician after all – it's that anyone would consider voting for an 84 yr old man to represent them.

Surely his values can't be the same as 80% of the population. Vote him out and let him spend some time watching re-runs of Matlock.

I think the Governor of a state replaces a U.S. Senator by appointment if the Senator in question needs to step-down. So if Ted Stevens gets re-elected, he will be forced to step down due to felony charges, which means Sarah will replace him with a Republican of her choosing. Scary thought – so get smart Alaska! Vote Dem!

I don't know who Sarah Palin is to make a comment on Ted Stevens

It seems to me that up there in Alaska corruption runs rampant….Sarah Palin obviously does not see herself as a law breaker!!!!!!
I don't know how she can go out in the public and keep talking about anybody and their values and policies when she has none of her own….this lady is from another planet…..unbelievable…really unbelievable!!!!

Deep. She asks that Alaskans to "join me (her) in respecting the workings of our judicial system and I'm confident that Senator Stevens from this point on will do the right thing for the people of Alaska,"; kind of like how she and her husband respected the process of the investigation into her ABUSE OF POWER? Refusing subpoenas, fighting before giving documents and depositions? She is HARDLY the one to preach the higher ground in this scenario. I wonder if she has booked her tickets back home to Alaska for next Tuesday night? She isn't going anywhere but home!

These CEO of big oil Companies are the ones McCain and Palin are fighting for; they all recieve this 'back door' gifts from the big CEO and oil companies….Now Americans can now see why John McCain and Sarah Palin have been criticising Obama for his willingness to tax them (CEOs).

Gene   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

I'm surprised she didn't come out and say "See, as I said and now it's proof, Senator Stevens is completely innocent of all wrongdoing, just like me."

Unbelievable that she would make those statements about respecting the judicial system out of one side of her mouth.. while the other one is telling people to ignore subpoenas issued regarding her own case.

Latina-Indepedent-4-OBAMA   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

PALIN …………NEXT……….ABUSE OF POWER & ETHICS VIOLATIONS!

Chicken Little's Hardhat Company   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Watch…just as Slick Willy pardoned his brother, and Ford pardoned Nixon, W. as a parting middle finger to the country will pardon Stevens, Libby, Palin, and every other Republican criminal we've come to know in the last 8 years.

Alison   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

If she wants to be seen as a reformer, she needs to take more of a firm stand against Stevens. Her statement undermines her position on ethics, one of the few issues she claims to know something about.

Obama 2008   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

I guess she thinks it's a sad day in Alaska was when their biggest newspaper company, The Ankorage Daily News, endorsed Obama also!! LOL :)

My favorite newspaper   October 27th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Alaska deserves better. Voters, get ready for November 4 for a corruption sweep. Sweep out the trash.

And still she lies   October 27th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

So — is Palin conceding the presidential race or just saying she is going to start paying attention to Alaska's needs now?

Stu-Florida   October 27th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

As we say in the lower 48… batter up. Watch for those pesky curve balls Palin.

7 and a wake up… the Veterans know what that means : -)

Ruby   October 27th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Dog-gonnit Sarah! YOU'RE NEXT!!! Yeah buddy!

Terry, Dallas Texas   October 27th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

A sad day? It's only sad for you because you how closely linked to two of you are. It gets worse and worse for the GOP.

values   October 27th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Thats right in 8 days you will be going back to Alaska to work on that and not VP. Thank god.

conny   October 27th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Am speechless, this is real sad. So what's really going on there!

Brian   October 27th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

YOU SUPPORTED TED STEVENS FOR RE-ELECTION, SARAH.

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   October 27th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Bye Bye, Sarah!

Why not go back to Alaska NOW?????

paul (reformed republican)   October 27th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Will Palin vote for Stevens??? Was Ronald Reagan a B-Lister Movie Star????

Of course she'll vote for him; she'll need funds when she runs for President in 2012.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE, VOTE STRAIGHT DEM TICKET!   October 27th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Yo' half-wit, your speaking in incomprehensible phrases again.

You had nothing to do with "cleaning" up this corruption. In fact, you learned at Steven's knee, or was that on your knees?

America will just add this to the list of Larry Craig who we now know was tap dancing out Broadway show tunes in the stall next to the cute young cop.

Chicken Little's Hardhat Company   October 27th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Of course she's going to vote for him. While she may say that she is a reformer and a maverick (chug, chug), she is of the same cronyistic, power-drunk, power-abusing mold Dick Cheney and W. were cut from.

Must be something in the water…

hurriCAIN PALIN   October 27th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

check out the history, sen. stevens has brought millions of dollars to

his state, as do any other senators trying to help their states. people

should focus on the work and help the senators did for their states,

instead of personal issues that people dont need to pay attention to,

let the senators take care of their own faults. corruption has always

been in politics for decades, even in the democratic side.

Noemi in Los Angeles   October 27th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I dont believe her.

HUFFINGTON POST   October 27th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Do you want to know what the "PNAC" is? The Project of a New American Century is a chilling group of extremists with a world agenda for WAR. John McCain co-founded this group. If you love your children and do not want to see them go to war in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Georgia, or anywhere else please research John McCain's extremist back ground.

KLEE   October 27th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

ho hum

wow   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

she didn't respond when asked if she'll be voting for him??? Isn't that no brainer????

Oh, wait. I think I just answered my own question!

Caligirl   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

So, is abuse of power and corruption an Alaskan Culture thing?

turning IN blue from Chicago   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Because she's going to vote for him LOL.

Is Alaska going blue this election? Two corrupt officials and a major newspaper endorsement! That would be awesome.

OBAMA-BIDEN 08
FOR THE CHANGE WE NEED

John   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

"I'm confident that Senator Stevens from this point on will do the right thing for the people of Alaska" Sure because she was so honorable when it was found out she abused her own power. This woman is a sad joke

Voter   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

"I ask the people of Alaska to join me in respecting the workings of our judicial system"

Didn't she try to hide from our judicial system when it called upon her?

Chris from St. Louis   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

How about you missy …. you are next.

adg   October 27th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

It takes one to know one. I feel bad for alaska they seem to have alot of bad politicans in there state….. They should turn blue and forget Palin ,shes just making them look bad. they both are

We love Sarah   October 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

This is how she treats a Senator who supported her bid for Governor?!

Now, she is Miss clean hands. This RACIST needs to go back where she came from!!!

Voting for change Seattle, Wa   October 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Please CNN expect my comment! Please please please!! Thank you!

Well, well well WHAT A SHOCKER yet another REPBUBLICAN in the news for corruption and scandal. Stealing, lying, cheating, oh and OIL company SOUND familiar?? Oh and what makes it even better is Palin is from that state! Hmmmm Make you wonder? If not it really, really should.
As I sit here and read comments from some of you people it baffles me that YOU PEOPLE still want to vote for McCain and Palin. You have ALL got to be out of your mind. I am really serious! I read your comments and it makes me sick to my stomach. Most of the Republicans that I have spoke to only STATE the lies that they hear, (they probably mostly hear from church). Please for good sakes if you haven’t voted yet, please read some FACTS first. And for you racist people, please get a life, stop being ignorant, don’t vote for the WHITE man just because he is WHITE. Because it’s been the WHITE people, and the republicans that I see that has us in this messed up state that we find ourselves in today. For you people that keep saying CNN is bias LOL. Try watching Fox News and then let me hear you say that. CNN isn’t bias they are just smart. The people that are actually voting for Obama, we aren’t ignorant or getting played, or fooled, WE ARE SMART! Please please realize the difference. We have let the repubublicans run this country far, far too long. Its time we let the Democrats in so we can actually do the job right, and start fixing this country. I work for the GOVT yep, that’s right I do. I actually work for the VA and trust me the Republican Party hasn’t done anything to help our VETS. I know first hand. So it makes me laugh that only reason that some of you want to vote for Mccain is because he was POW, are you kidding me? He is rich now, he doesn’t care about you VETS anymore; Obama actually has a plan for the VA. Does McCain your chum, buddy, Conrad?? NO NO!!. Don’t get me wrong I DO appreciate and respect McCain for fighting for our country, just like I appreciate and respect everyone of our patients. But trust me I wouldn’t elect any of our patients I have seen suffering from PTSD to be in charged of AMERICAS # 1 job.
Wake up people please!! You need to actually read the facts, and listen, listen, listen.

WE NEED CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE!

~Obama 2008 and 2012~

cheryl garrett   October 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

So I guess she is going to monitor herself? Right! She knows that her butt in on the chopping block next. Be glad when Obama wins and she goes home and take her punishment.

Red, Red WHINE!!   October 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Debbie   October 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Now she thinks he will do the right thing?! Hes the longest sitting Sen. in HISTORY!!!

Barbara from Canada   October 27th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

more to come from Alaska regarding ethics, judgement, etc… methinks. Is this just the prologue?

Jewish Republican for Obama   October 27th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Governor, this is the first time since I've been following your career that you've given me a reason to respect you.

UCLAdy04   October 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Wow so much irony in Palin's comments. First how can she mention fighting corruption with a straight face after she has been found guilty of abusing her power? Also, how can she talk about respecting the judicial system when her campaign did everything in their power to shut down Troopergate? Give me a break! Stevens and Palin are cut from the same corrupt cloth!

Matt   October 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Maverick!….
…. Maverick!

…. Maverick!

sabuc for Obama   October 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Magic 60 here we come!

Im sure she's sad for him, cause she's about to go thru the same process and will loose her titles. 1 Alaskan official found guilty and soon to be punished for abuse of power. 1 more to go [looks at Palin]

dan   October 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

the alaska will be more sad for palin's abusing power .. no question..

Not sleeping at the switch   October 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

SURE I am a MAVERICK…..Who was the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of his PAC.

But thats a whole nother story!

Scott   October 27th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

"Palin did not respond when asked if she will vote for Sen. Stevens and promptly boarded the campaign plane."

I'll take that as a yes! She is a maverick, just like all the others in Washington. Keep it up Falin, making Obama look better every minute.

Corruption runs rampant   October 27th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

sad day for alaska their senator and their governor are both corrupt!!!!!

Riaz   October 27th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

" I will carefully now monitor the situation and I'll take any appropriate action as needed. In the meantime"

…..why wasn't she already doing this? this woman is a sham

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   October 27th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Of course she will vote for Stevens.

She has mastered, like most politicians, talking out of both sides of her mouth.

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 27th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

I wonder which of her "handlers" had to explain this verdict to her. I wonder too, if she got a new outfit bought for her after the verdict.

Tom   October 27th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Hahahahaha! She really thinks he will win! Yeah, Ted Stevens will win a Senate seat this year, just like McCain-Palin will win the Presidency.

Independent in AZ   October 27th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

So when is Sarah going to be facing charges after the 2 guys in the AIP built her house?

Lee from FL   October 27th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

her conviction will be a great day for America
