Kennedy is heading back to Washington this afternoon.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy plans to return to Washington Tuesday for the second time following an operation for a brain tumor in June, his spokesman said.

"Weather permitting, Senator Kennedy plans to leave Hyannis Port to spend time at his house in Washington later this afternoon. He hasn't been there for months and he thought this would be a good time to be back. He plans to return to the Cape for Thanksgiving," spokesman Anthony Coley said.

Kennedy has not decided if he will attend the "lame duck" session of the Senate following next week's elections, Coley said. The 76-year-old senator is not up for re-election this year.

In July, Kennedy made a dramatic visit to the floor of the Senate to cast a vote to help break a deadlock on an important Medicare bill.

It'll be great to see Ted back in Washington. Our country could use more upstanding, honorable politicians like he and Mr. Obama right now!

Sue in Alabama   October 28th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I am STILL amazed at the number of people who think Obama is not a US citizen! First off, he was born in Hawaii, which makes him an American citizen. But even if he HAD been born in a foreign country he would Still be an American citizen because his Mother was a citizen.
Please do the research BEFORE you speak.
Thanks.

Welcome back Senator! You are a source of great strength and inspiration for America. I know you will be there in Washington DC to greet our new President Barack Obama being sworn in on January 20, 2009. Your steadfast leadership in the Senate has helped millions of ordinary Americans over so many years and we salute you for your years of great service to this nation. Get well soon to come back to work with a Democratic majority Congress. You will accomplish even more for the people of this Country. Can't wait for that day!

jen   October 28th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

For all of you who support McCain/Palin: do you really want 4 or 8 more years of the disasterous turn our country has taken????
McCain has supported Mr.Bush in virtually every important vote he has ever cast. And Ms.Palin states she hates America and wants Alaska to secede from the country.
How can anyone support these people? Let Ted Kennedy be your guide, let's get this country back to a place of respect in the rest of the world, with a leader we can be proud of. A man of inspiration, a man for all men.
Lets get our nation out of financial ruin. We need a dream, a hope for the future, a government we can trust.
Vote early, vote on the 4th, VOTE for our candidate, a man of vision:
BARACK OBAMA !!!!!

Independent   October 28th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

There can never be too many like Ted Kennedy. I've always listened to wise men/women. Now I know why Kennedy understood the need for Barack Obama as president.

I am praying to hear these words: Senator Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States of America! This would serve as an early wedding anniversary present. May God Bless!

gEnie   October 28th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Good to have you back Senator Kennedy, and keep well. Please tell everybody to get out and vote. Obama/Biden, for a better change not just for our great Country but for the rest of the world. Hope and Peace.

October Surprise   October 28th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

If Palin quit right now what would the people do that have already voted? There will be no October surprise replacing Plain with anybody.

Gald you are feeling better Mr. Kennedy – that is good news. The bad news is that you sold out long time decocrates to back Obama in place of Hillary and put us all in jeopardy with Obama. You disappoint me and so does Bill and Hillary for remaining in the democatic party. Hillary was thrown uder the bus by her own party and she took their guff and rolled over for Obama.

I have left the Dem. party to never return. I have become an independent and will never be bound by any party again. Of course with Obama in office we will be lucky if we get our freedom to vote the way we want to anymore, he just might change that too!!

McCain/Palin for 2008 – a man you can trust.

Pension fund is 44billion in debt, worst in the US. Cook County has has a sales tax of 10.25%- highest in country. Chicago school system- THE WORST. So tell me, what in the hell makes this guy the choice to be president of the united states?

Well, It's time for McCain's big "October Surprise".

This morning, McCain called for Alaska Senator Ted Stevens to step down after his fraud conviction.

So, Stevens steps down, leaving Alaska Gov. Palin the responsibility to choose a successor.

So, Palin quits the losing McCain campaign (that she isn't happy with anyway) and, to no one's suprprise, appoints herself Senator for Alaska. Palin goes home to launch her write-in campaign to keep the Senate seat (at least she'll be able to call her own shots in that campaign).

McCain then names former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge as his new, October Surprise Vice-President, because he's desparate to win PA!

Then, in true McCain form, he lies to everybody (again) and says that this was his plan all along!!!

Somebady check real quick – Did Stevens call for McCain to resign during the Keating scandal?????

Doesn't it seem that some of these posters here who are against Obama seem to have the same vitriolic hatred as do those two insurrectionist skin heads that were attempting to kill BHO and other African Americans? Enough of the hatred. I can sense your frustration McCain supporters and I realize that some of Obama's supporters are a bit too much in your faces with their own form of insults and negativaty, but my gosh! Enough with the "Barack Hussein Osama bin Biden" crap and the pending dangers of jihadist-terrorist-inspired communist domination. This type of rediculous language is pushing all of the centrist-oriented moderates into the Obama camp, which is why McCain is going to loose this election.

afra   October 28th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Kennedy's strength please post!   October 28th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Ted kennedy is a beacon of hope and strength to all of us. He has served his country well and certanly does NOT deserve some of the hateful comments on here. He is a human being who has dedicated his life to making things better. I suggest all you hate mongers sit back and think about what have you done for your country lately??
This man has made mistakes but his heart has always been true to helping those , especially children and their causes. So hatemongers, put a sock in your disrespectful pie holes.
Prayers to all the Kennedy's . Way to go Teddy!

Rob Johnson   October 28th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Ted Kennedy's crucial early endorsement of Barack Obama may end up being the crowning achievement of his career.

Well done Ted! Every American owes you a debt of gratitude for helping Obama get to the threshold of the White House.

I only hope his health holds out long enough to see Obama sworn in.

Zagazaw   October 28th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

McCain can't even run his own campaign, how can he possible run a country? Palin don't even know her roll as a VP how would she even know what to do?

THEY EVEN FAIL TO REALIZE THAT THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. and not the independent state or towns of America.

McCain Vote with Bush most of the time almost 90% of the time because he don't have a mind of his own, he can't even realize that Palin have no respect for him and is walking all over him, how can we possible trust him to be in charge of the greatest country and the most powerful millitary in the world?
It is a proven fact at the age of 70 everything start going down hill, even your brain, your thinking, your judgment, and I am not making fun of older folks my mom is 78 and my dad is 86 and I respect them very much, but there is a big different between 60-72.

Maybe thats why even the bible even man a 70 yrs life span. But McCain is not the man he was 10 yrs ago. I love him but he is not fit to lran the free world.
A VOTE FOR MCCAIN IS A VOTE FOR PALIN AS PRESIDENT, WEATHER SHE IS READY OR NOT, WEATHER SHE IS QUALIFY OR NOT, FORGET ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD.
BASE ON WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN AND HEAR FROM HER OWN MOUTH, IS THIS THE WOMAN YOU WANT TO BE YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT? THE CHOICE IS YOUR.

Has to End   October 28th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

That is the problem with this country we can't work together to get things done..POWER TRIP for BOTH Sides. Just like AK Senator Stevens who was found GUILTY on all 7 counts is asking the people to stand by his side to get reelected..For Gods sake it is 7 FELONY CONVICTIONS !!!!! Term limits are not necessary in the Senate. What limits the terms of senators is their performance for their constituents. Sorry, we may not like a particular senator, but if they do a good job for their constituents and get reelected, they can and should serve as long as their supporters want them to.

By the way, welcome back Sen. Kennedy. I hope you heard Sen. Obama's speech yesterday, reminded me of your brother. God bless you and your family.

Really glad I persisted in reading down the comments just now - many of those at the top from obviously hate-twisted ignoramuses were shocking and disturbing. No one is his or her right mind could accuse Ted of doing nothing, for one thing. I say God bless him too, and thanks for his contributions to our country, not least in the field of health, which was completely neglected before he and his staff took office in Washington. No headlines there - just great and solid service where sorely needed.

Raul   October 28th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

BARACK HUSSEIN MOHAMMED OBAMA = RADICAL POPULISM

Barack Hussein Mohammed Obama is a pathetic leader; frustrated, impregnated of radical populism. He releases his frustration, dreaming of being president of United States. That radical populism is a serious threat, and that threat escalates when Obama uses his actual position of pseudo leader with the support of a segment of American population to violate in a violent way the security of all American society.

Welcome back and God bless you, Sen. Kennedy.

Ted   October 28th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Era..where are my pants?

David   October 28th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Great news! I am inspired by this man! Mr. Kennedy thank you for your hard work and support of our next president, Barack Obama. The voices of tomorrow should look to you as they cast their votes in this election. You show the courage and hope needed to lead this country out of the mess perpetrated upon it by Bush and the Republican team.

May your return to Washington be a sign of what is to come – a return to the prosperity and goodness of this country that has been lost over the past eight years – a loss and division of our country that McCain wishes to continue.

God Bless!

Matt in Virginia   October 28th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

That great news.. Our Prayers are with you Sen. Kennedy. A champion for the people..

Demforever,
Barack Obama 08+ 8

Joel   October 28th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Rock. I don't always agree with the guy, but I'm really glad to hear he's back on his feet.

LIP   October 28th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Another good reason for term limits. Senators should not be serving from cradle to grave.
A maximum of two terms and they should have to buy their own health insurance just like regular people and they should definitely not be allowed to vote their pay increases.
Take away all the perks as well.

Helene   October 28th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I am glad Ted Kinnedy will be alive and well for many years during an Obama Presidency.

GA Independent   October 28th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

June   October 28th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Stay well Senator Kennedy, It will be wonderful to see you standing proudly beside Barack Obama when he is sworn in.

KB   October 28th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Congratulations to Senator Kennedy whose family I have admired since 1960.

The only problem I have is that Senator Kennedy's feels that Obama is like is brother and our President John F. Kennedy.

President Kennedy, nor any of the candidates have hidden their true birth certificate!. ALL the presidential candidates were born American Citizens

I find it very suspicious that after Obama trip to Hawaii this weekend that on 10-26-08, the Hawaii Governor sealed Obama's birth records.
I thought Obama visit was because is was concerned about his Grandmother health ? Also why have the public NEVER see a current photo of him and his Grandmother??

Obama CANNOT be a LEGAL candidate for President if he is was not born a legal citizen!! Just like the California Governor can never run for President!

Why is the DNC trrying to suppress this question of Obama's birth?

Senator Kennedy, do you have proof of whether Obama was born in Kenya or Hawaii???

Evelyn, St.Louis, MO   October 28th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Good for you, Senator Kennedy! I am so glad that you feel good enough to want to return to Washington. I continue to pray for your complete recovery even if you do not return to the Senate. Thank you for all you have done. May God continue to bless you and keep you. Keep us posted. We like hearing from you.

God bless you Teddy. I pray that you have a speedy recovery and I have always been an admirer of the Kennedy's. I was only 8 years old when President John Kennedy was killed and they let all of us kids out of school early. You keep the faith because I know Gods will that you will be around a long time.

I'm glad he's ok. but it doesn't fix anything he's a problem with Obama comparing Obama to JFK. is a insult tohis good name one of the best PRESIDENTS ever. Jackie can't be compared to Michelle She uses the race card alot Jackie never used a crutch I can live 4 years with Obama if I have too but, my daughter is in a dr. office and had to do lay offs because of Obama for all the people who think their getting tax breaks for hiring they'll just go back to where they were smart people not so smart Obama followers. I'm a DEm. for MCCAin

Listen to Our Children   October 28th, 2008 11:46 am ET

God Bless you, your family and thank you from all of the United States of America for consistently 'Listening to Our Children'

There may never be another family who loved, served, sacrificed and listened to the voices of our Children than yours.

To bad however that you didn't believe in Hillary and chose to believe in a man who hasn't served 1 term in the Senate and who votes 'present'

But no buddy is perfect!...again, thank you Ted for being there for America!

Bob Indianapolis IN   October 28th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Hang in there, Ted! We expect to see you on January 20th, when the evil forces leave D.C. for Texas and Dubai, and President Barack Obama is sworn in as President of the United States of America!

Interested observer   October 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Glad to hear it. We need a lion in the senate to help protect America's future. It'll be nice to see him alongside President Obama and VP Biden. A true example of the slogan "country first", not a peddlar of lies and a dabbler in divisionary politics like McCain and Palin.
