The Stevens verdict is another setback for the GOP.
The Stevens verdict is another setback for the GOP.

(CNN) – Ted Steven's guilty verdict Monday afternoon could mean the end of the Alaska lawmaker's 40-year tenure in the Senate and serve to inch the already emboldened Democratic Party closer to 60 seats in the Senate, recent polls of the Alaska race suggest.

In an Ivan Moore Research poll of the Alaska Senate race conducted earlier this month, entirely before the verdict was handed down, Stevens and Democratic challenger Mark Begich were statistically tied. Several other recent surveys have also suggested the race is neck-and-neck.

But the prospect of Stevens, first elected to the Senate in 1968, facing a tough reelection race was unthinkable only a few months ago. After all, the last Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Alaska is former presidential candidate Mike Gravel. Gravel served two terms, from 1969 to 1981, before embarking on his unsuccessful presidential bid 26 years later. Stevens is also an icon in the state, responsible (and now infamous) for securing billions of federal dollars for the state, including the ill-fated "bridge to nowhere."

But Steven's reelection hopes now appear increasingly slim in what is a boost to Democrats seeking to reach the filibuster-proof 60 seat majority. It's also too late for the GOP to replace Stevens on the ballot with a different candidate - that deadline passed more than six weeks ago and the ballots have already been printed.

“This race was a dead heat before Stevens was convicted,” said CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. "The Democrats are now most likely one step closer to a filibuster-proof majority of 60 Senate seats next January.”

Meanwhile, asked if there is likely to be any national political impact of the Stevens verdict, a prominent Republican strategist close to the McCain campaign said, "Just one more seat."

"It can't really impact a national environment where 12 percent say things are going well," the strategist told CNN's John King.

VOTE REPUBLICAN!
DON'T LET THE DEMOCRATS TAKE CONTROL OF THE US!

I've heard way too much about Alaska this year.

Republican for Obama   October 28th, 2008 9:06 am ET

It will be doubly tragic for Alaska when Sarah Palin in found guilty in her abuse of power case in Alaska. She and her husband gave depositions on Friday. Many, including myself are suffering from buyers remorse. Sorry McCain, no refunds. I'm voting for the Obama/Biden ticket this year.

Teresa   October 28th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Shame shame.... CNN has also failed to mention that the Anchorage daily news has endorsed Obama. People need to know.

Bob   October 28th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Just another example of republicans gone rogue. We need a change and we will get it in November!

John. Austin, TX   October 28th, 2008 9:05 am ET

GO OBAMA!!
I know this has nothing to do with the article, but i'm an obamabot with no pulse, blindly gravitating towards empty rhetoric and an empty suit. But hey, better hope than criminals!! (Yes, that means you, Sarah)

It's the hunting season for lame ducks and another goes down sorry old man but you are toasted. on the other hand the journalist who interviewed Joe Biden ought to grow up and realise that although we need answers to probing questions at least we should be guided and uphold some ethical proffessional way of asking them. she was soo sided with lame ducks (republican, no wonder she and her husband are republicans). i think she needs to visit with CNN best political team for lessons especially Uncle Larry King that might save her career otherwise shame on her. and shame on Ted Stevens

PeopleVOTE   October 28th, 2008 9:04 am ET

Republican keep bring idiots like Bachman,Stevens,Palin, Bush and Hire more people like sean Hannity, Bill O'Relley we decmocrats are loving it. My Prediction is this year is the end of the GOP era, this party is dead for the coming 200 years.

Patty   October 28th, 2008 9:03 am ET

Good riddance to this slimy Stevens. Rout out all who are dishonest and think they're above everyone else. Stevens is exactly why the electorate is so angry. For those politicians who claim they will change Washington, I challenge them to do so. I hope the Democrats do get the 60 majority, that Barack Obama is our next President of the US and that finally things can get done. With the so called "balance of power" it is proven nothing gets done. I'd rather have one party in power and then vote them out rather than what we've put up with over the past ...NOTHING of significance has been accomplished.

Next is Palin with her abuse of power !

Paul in FL   October 28th, 2008 9:00 am ET

I would like to have the final say in this matter. He would serve the full sentence in a regular federal prison.
The sad part that the mental rejects in Alaska will vote for him in spite of the conviction. He did a lot for Alaska by spreading the wealth. Oops..I should not say that out loud.

Redneck from Kentucky   October 28th, 2008 8:59 am ET

How do you spell corruption and abuse of power in Alaska? Stevens & Palin! It sounds like Alaska politics needs a good house cleaning.

Bruce   October 28th, 2008 8:59 am ET

Looks like BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. Palin Buddy, must have taught Palin everything she KNOWS about how to abuse her power. Too bad you forgot to teach her how to be effective and be able to answer questions during interviews. But then McCain was not looking for a REAL Person (mighthave been afraid of compitition) He was only looking for a PRETY FACE and a short skirt. Now Palin thinks she is really important and is trying to build a future from this. Too bad they have cameras now and all her stupid acts are gong to live on much longer.

Alex   October 28th, 2008 8:59 am ET

Stevens deserves removal from office. But what is more distressing is that he's been in office for way too long. There needs to be term limits enacted (if they haven't already) to prevent this type of behavior. Two 4- yr terms is plenty for anybody. Perhaps they'll appreciate being elected a little more, although others, like Mahonney, get started early with conduct detrimental to the position they hold.

Joe E.   October 28th, 2008 8:59 am ET

Justice was served on a high official. I'm very pleased with the verdict. More such verdicts would discourage undue influence in government.

Doug, Minneapolis   October 28th, 2008 8:59 am ET

Now it's time to investigate the dishonorable Govenor Sarah the Power Abuser Palin and her First Dude in Crime husband's link to the same connections. How much work on their house was done in the same manner? In their minds Alaska is so isolated they believe they can get away with things like that. Put them all in jail where they belong. Palin is no maverick, she's just another power hungry monster who will step on anyone or anything that gets in her way.

art   October 28th, 2008 8:57 am ET

ya think! Knowing those Alaskans and all the attention they are getting I wouldn't be surprised if they elect the old fart in again.
At 84 he should move aside and let someone else corrupt for a while.

Ian   October 28th, 2008 8:56 am ET

One more reason for term limits.

Dave   October 28th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Poster child for pork spending and using his office for self gain. Watch Palin run for this seat in 6 years so she can emulate her idol.

Ann, MI   October 28th, 2008 8:55 am ET

I wonder if Rep. Don Young will also be defeated. He has been Stevens' congressional counterpart in pork barrel projects for Alaska. And then of course, there is Governor Palin, who asked the Alaska delegation to secure 200 million in federal earmarks for their state.

Jerry   October 28th, 2008 8:53 am ET

Power corrupts. Too bad we don't have term limits of 18 years max (3 terms) and also have a rule that says if you are 70 years old or older you are no longer eligible to run for any federal level seat.

Obama 08

Scott L   October 28th, 2008 8:51 am ET

Americans should demand the LA Times release video tape of Obama giving a toast to an anti-Israel PLO activist alongside none other than Bill Ayers.

Why is the LA Times hiding this from the American people?

That is anti-American in and of itself.

And for you liberals who want to trash me, LA TIMES SAID "WE HAVE OBTAINED A COPY OF THE TAPE" I am quoting their own article!!

Veteran in Kansas   October 28th, 2008 8:50 am ET

I am innocent and will contiue to fight. Words of a US Senator convicted by a jury of all charges made against him. Our prisons are overcrowded with innocent individuals. But I am willing to give Stevens the benefit of the doubt, and say that he may very well be innocent, but if he is then he is a victim of senility and can not remember whether he made major renovations to his home or not, can not recall whether he purchased furniture of not. I am not sure what would be worst a greedy, crooked politician of a senior member of the US Senante that has trouble remembering what he does on a day by day basis.

Michelle, PA   October 28th, 2008 8:50 am ET

This has not been a banner year for Alaska's Republican party, to put it mildly. Here's hoping the current batch of corrupt elected officials get tossed out by the Alaskan voters at the earliest possible opportunity (Stevens' Senate seat and the At-Large House seat on November 4th, the Governor when her term is up – if she is not impeached sooner). All Americans deserve better, Alaska is no exception.

JOE - WEST VIRGINIA   October 28th, 2008 8:49 am ET

Be careful of this guy who wants to take our money and give it away.

that is not the change we need.

Chris (SC)   October 28th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Can't believe there isn't more outrage and other officials asking Stevens to just go away and not taint the entire party.

If you are convicted of corruption how can you stay an elected offical, especially one from Alaska where oil rules the state?

Peter M   October 28th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Let them lock the thug and throw away the key for all I care. Now let's how Palin pals around with this convicted felon of a Senator. Stevens, just like Palin and McCain is addicted to graft. They are all disgraceful.

joe smith   October 28th, 2008 8:43 am ET

too bad; we just hope he is not a part of the group that will raise gas prices after the election is final; on that subject, seems strange that a year ago when oil was at $60.00 a barrel, price at the pump was $1.70/gallon; today we have the same senario, but quess what, the price is $2.50, now, put a little for inflation, the price should be around $1.80/gallon; how do the 535 men and women running this country justify that, and their jobs at the same time..

Sam   October 28th, 2008 8:42 am ET

I hope Obama takes his own advice – not to get complacent and cocky. To paraphrase Yogi Berra – The election is not over until it is over; it is not over until the fat lady sings.

By the way, has anyone heard the details of McCain's plans? All I hear is that has a plan; I guess his plan#1: Find faults in Obama's plans or blast Bush; plan#2: Read plan#1.

eds   October 28th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Check out "Fact Check" on the two "closing arguments"... very telling. Nearly all of McCain's are "false" or "misleading" as compared to the vast majority of "true" for Obama. I don't think I saw one "true" for McCain...
Why does it need to be like this?
I surely hope that Amercia does the right thing and sends McCain and Palin packing.

Sue in MI   October 28th, 2008 8:34 am ET

But didn't you hear him? He, like Sarah Palin, is innocent. And he was the one who urged her to run...does this mean she pals around with felons? And this was not 20 years ago-this man is her mentor. I want to know more about the building of her mansion, and how she can be out on the stump saying she's a maverick and fighting corruption when she does this same stuff. I also think that the wardrobe is not a non-issue. Isn't there a clause in the Campaign Financing Act that forbids using public funds for clothing? That McCain voted for?
The deceptions and whining and dodges are the reason the Republicans are losing-America has had enough.

ohio voter   October 28th, 2008 8:33 am ET

Ted Stevens has now been damaged. I do anticipate he will lose. Sarah Palin and Stevens have had lots of connections over the years. He helped her when she was mayor of Wasilla. Then he gave her a job. Newspaper in Alaska has long archived articles about their connections.

Outrageous! High handed and equally as incompetent and corrupt politicians (from both sides) already dividing up the spoils of the Steven's fall from "greatness".

What we the people want to see is an appropriate punishment for a fraud, liar and cheat. Speculation has already been made that Bush will pardon or commute Steven's sentence. That would not surprise me in the least.

75% of Europeans want Obama to be president. Why don't we hear more about this? You have to understand, Europeans are SMART. They are smarter than Americans and they know what's best. They will work with Obama and tell him what to do so we can all get along better. We all need to understand this so we can get Obama elected and move on with our lives.

When the power hungry fall, they all fall!!! Starting with George Bush and Karl Rove to greedy, dishonest Ted Stevens. I hope the Republicans start laying blame for the loss of this election where it really belongs – at 1600 Pensylvania Avenue.. The lesson learned here as far as campaigning is concerned is here are all the way not to win a campaign. So Republicans when you start pointing fingers, turn that finger on you. All of you, supporting George Bush and Karl Rove are getting what you deserve. I smell landslide and control of Congress. The Democrats sure cannot do any worse than GW and gang for the first 6 years of his reign. Unfortunately the Democrats have a gigantic mess to unscramble and fix and it cannot be done over night. At least some of the power hungry will be gone.Ted Stevens is a perfect example of a political party gone wrong – gimme gimme gimme and all for free. Shame on the lot of you. If records were available, I'l l"betcha" you would find that her house was built from favors.

Has anyone met any of these 25%?

One of the best speeches I have ever heard. Once again, Obama is trying to heal the country while Mccain continues to divide with his rhetoric of fear and hate. Distorting the truth to win. Allowing his running mate to subvert the truth for their political gain. I am just mystified that anyone listening to the republican ticket could in good conscience vote for it. I have to say, I am very nervous about this election. I believe that race is the biggest barrier that we face. There is no other reason to explain why the worst run campaign in modern history coupled with the worst vice presidential pick in the history of mankind, is not 20 points behind. Everyone, please get out and vote for Obama. Now is not the time to sit back and think others are gonna carry us across the line. Dont believe the polls. This race is very close. We can not take the chance of a Palin run country, because i dont care what he says, John Mccain is old and doesnt look good. Just the other day, they reported that he told his staff not to schedule anything before 9am. How does that work in the White House? Get out and vote.

I'm sure if it were any other American citizen they would be on their way to jail......I am totally amazed at how the legal system works for these kind of folks.......aren't we supposed to be a nation of laws??
I know I for one am sick of how the law works for some and not others and if you break the law of any kind you are punished in some way and not allowed to carry on as if nothing has happened!!!

Dealt, Lisbon   October 28th, 2008 7:30 am ET

I don't understand how the McCain campaign with all these "small", "petty" scandals (inside its own ticket as well) can still go about Obama's "socialism" and "redistribution of wealth".

The role of a government in running a country is vast,. That doesn't mean a "nanny state" or the death of small, medium or big business.

A fair and strong government menas first rate education for all, adequate health care, solid infrastructures which business can use for mobility and spreading their products around, renewable energies which diminsh dependency on foreign oil, a regulated business environment where people can invest safely, fair and equal justice, safe cities, etc. For that you need money and face it, the money comes from all workers. And I'd say it's ethical (not to say christian) to tax higher incomes more than lower incomes.

A healthy economic environment means all of the above and not just lower taxes, or else America and European countries would be happy with living in China or India and not just using those locations to produce cheaply.

nychag 4 obama   October 28th, 2008 7:29 am ET

I'd like to meet one of these 12% who thinks the country is doing well. (And have whatever they're smoking.)

Jan   October 28th, 2008 7:29 am ET

what is the point in casting a vote? the election is "fixed" for Obama with all of the voter fraud that justice refuses to address , MSM bias, hidden tapes, etc until after the election and the powerful left wing stars and their vicious smears. There is NO chance in the US today for a FAIR ELECTION–cnn HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE FRAUD BY NOT HELPING TO PUSH FOR FAIRNESS.

Dawn   October 28th, 2008 7:28 am ET

If the Democrats gets the magic number of 60, the Republicans will worry, if Obama wins, but if McCain wins, our country could be screwed, first of all Palin would not have a clue what her offical job of VP, remember she will tick off the Senate.... Mmm, well this could be very interesting.

please vote for Obama/Biden08/12

Bruce   October 28th, 2008 7:27 am ET

Just thinnk about it, he comes from Alaska too. Maybe it is time to really look into Palin's activities while she was there. The AIP issue is still not in the open. Her Husband was amember of that HATE GROUP and she PALs around with them. That group HATES everything abut America. Palin's contact with AIP is much stronger than any of the things they try to stick to Obama.

Sue   October 28th, 2008 7:22 am ET

How could this be? Someone in Alaska found guilty of wrongdoing-NEVER! Just look at their Governor.

Dave V.   October 28th, 2008 7:21 am ET

The guy is guilty of fraud and he is running neck and neck with his competitor?!?!?!?! In Alaska they obviously have a different set of standards for their elected officials.

Considering that Palin was found to violate the ethics of the Govenor's office in the "Troopergate" scandal and still has a 70% approval rating.

Looks like in Alaska the only requirement to get elected is that you have to be Republican.

CHERYL IN FLORIDA   October 28th, 2008 7:19 am ET

This does not surprise me.
This man is very friendly with Sarah Palin, they are all criminals as far as I am concerned!
It will be a happy day when Obama wins!
OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

concerned Dem   October 28th, 2008 7:18 am ET

If I was running against Stevens, I would tie him to McBush and McPainful, not that his running opponent needs to do that now. He'll probably win by a landslide.

Jeff - Austin, TX   October 28th, 2008 7:17 am ET

Ted Stevens is the poster boy for term limits.

Ananth   October 28th, 2008 7:15 am ET

That is so much true Power Corrupts- Politicians are very rarely Clean!! He represnts the State from Where GOP VP nominee is contesting! Bravo Joe the Janitors! who want to clean Washington, Wall Street. Their own ally is Stinking rotten.

anne   October 28th, 2008 7:09 am ET

Only in America can a felon not be allowed to vote but can still run for Senate. Let's shake the washington tree of bad apples while we have a chance!! These people are ruining America!!

AM in VA   October 28th, 2008 7:07 am ET

Corruption from a veteran in the highest legislative branch of government in the land. I hope Alaskans have the good sense to "run him out of town".

Mohamed from Virgina   October 28th, 2008 7:05 am ET

fat cat: When crock stilling so long, came to point they think is their rights to do so.A lot like him still in the higher office, but they will get caught.
thanks god

Johnny   October 28th, 2008 7:04 am ET

Stevens conviction has nothing to do with Gov Palin or Sen McCain. He did wrong not anyone else.

alvino   October 28th, 2008 7:01 am ET

Sarah the abuser (power), did not clean up Alaska, but thinks she can clean up Wash. DC.

alvino   October 28th, 2008 6:59 am ET

How does John McCain get by without being taken to task with his PNAC, Keating, and G. Gordon Liddy ties. Why does he get to pal around with terrorists?

alvino   October 28th, 2008 6:58 am ET

This does not help John the name caller and Sarah the labeller.

alvino   October 28th, 2008 6:56 am ET

Will the last republican to leave the party please turn off the lights and lock the door?

James Adams   October 28th, 2008 6:55 am ET

When Sarah Palin loses the election she will return to Alaska as Governor. Because Ted Stevens is now a felon and will probably lose the election which gives Palin the right to appoint a crony to finish his term.
Solution...she will resign and have her Lt. Governor appoint her to the office. Then, four years from now she will run for President with all of that "Washington" experience under her belt.

If the Democratic candidate wins the Senate office on November 4, she will go home and write a best selling cookbook on how to make Moose Stew and other wild animal recipes.

Republican for change   October 28th, 2008 6:52 am ET

Vote vote vote!

Barack 08

Mike T. Vaughn   October 28th, 2008 6:51 am ET

GOOD!!!!! What Arrogance is that this guy is not a convicted Felon and Still Plans to stay in Office?????? and Worse Yet there is no law on the books that state he can't serve............What a load of nonsense!!!!

Foreign observer   October 28th, 2008 6:50 am ET

Selfish behaviour became more and more a fundamental of the Republican party. They need a time out to get back on feet.

thomas   October 28th, 2008 6:46 am ET

When representatives of the people sublimate their duty for greed, they dishonor theirselves and their country. It is an act of treason to sell out your country for profit and there are still many who have not been punished for their crimes.

Don   October 28th, 2008 6:45 am ET

Republicans are thieves

Jerry   October 28th, 2008 6:40 am ET

If more of the people we elect were charged and sent to prison for taking bribes and stealing from the american people we would probably have alot of senators and congressmen that would be looking after the interest of the people instead of stuffing their pockets with money from special interest groups.

Matt, Manchester, CT   October 28th, 2008 6:38 am ET

Man, just kick this bum out next Tuesday and be done w/ it. If we'd get in trouble for lying like that, then he should pay just the same.

Tim E   October 28th, 2008 6:31 am ET

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; But if you really make them think, they'll hate you.(Don Marquis)

At least there are 12% of Americans who'll never experience that hug of hate. Another 85% put "think today" on their remote. The remaining 3%? They are the rich and they just call a plumber. Right, John?

Tell it as it is   October 28th, 2008 6:30 am ET

Whoops!

cg   October 28th, 2008 6:30 am ET

Good-bye Stevens and take that other croock Sarah Plain with you.
We don't need you people in Washington.
God is working with the Dems.
Thank God for this moment!

Tell it as it is   October 28th, 2008 6:28 am ET

If he committed the crime and was found guilty, he should be justly punished.
GOP = Greed Over Politics

Tell it as it is   October 28th, 2008 6:25 am ET

Commit the crime, do the time. GOP = Greed Over Principles.

Bill   October 28th, 2008 6:24 am ET

Conservatism, as a principle, is dead.

Bill   October 28th, 2008 6:24 am ET

It's time for the Republican Party to either return to the principles of Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt or go the way of the Whig Party.

grahame   October 28th, 2008 6:15 am ET

He's a Republican what do you expect.

Just another in the long tradition of the Republican egomanics who think they can get away with this kind of thing.

Don't believe me? Just look at the list.

Sarah Palin is just another example. Where did she get her fashion excessory? .............At 'Rent an Autistic kid?'

Alex   October 28th, 2008 6:09 am ET

Now that Senator Stevens is a convicted felon, I hope the city of Anchorage has the decency to remove his name from our airport. The airport was once called, "Anchorage International Airport," but was changed to "Ted Stevens International Airport" in honor of this crook.

Librarian for Obama/Biden   October 28th, 2008 5:57 am ET

His lawyers will argue that Sen. Stevens is just too old to serve any jail time. Then, Sen. Stevens will continue his run for his Senate seat.

JB   October 28th, 2008 5:55 am ET

Is the least reflection of how rotten the Republican composition is. Americans should rally round and vote these crops of bad eggs out quick. Obama 2008!
