Sen. Obama reaches up to greet eager supporters last week in Richmond, Virginia. Obama is scheduled to be in Virginia again Tuesday.

(CNN) – The Virginia State Board of Elections is putting the word out: November 4 is Election Day for everyone in the state, regardless of political party.

The state agency issued a “Rumor Buster” press release this week with the correct date for voting in next week’s election because a fake flyer has been circulating with false information.

Click here to see the fake flyer

The flyer said incorrectly that Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters should vote November 4 and that Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents should vote November 5. The flyer claims that the separate dates for voting by party were enacted by the Virginia legislature to ease the strain on the polls during high turnout that is expected.

But, the flyer’s information is false. “The State Board of Elections did not issue this flyer,” the agency said in a statement. “Election Day is Tuesday November 4 and all registered voters will be able to cast their vote on that day. The polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Anyone in line at 7:00 p.m. will be able to vote.”

The fake flyer has been circulating in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, according to the State Board of Elections. The Virginia State Police refused to comment on the flyer because it is part of an “ongoing criminal investigation.”

It happens every Election. The REPUBLICANS try to prevent Democrats from voting. Better check your vote at the machine to ensure the machine did not change your vote to MCcain when you wanted Obama. This is a lot worse that registration frad. This can really effect the election. and prevent LEAGAL voters from casting their VOTE. Suggest the people and the party they represent be put in JAIL

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW   October 28th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

PELOSI + REED + OBAMA = DEPRESSION

WHICH MEANS NO FREE HANDOUTS FOR THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS.

Nathan   October 28th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Republican tricks like this make me sick to my stomach and fearful of another stolen election. I hope so badly that there isn't another vote scandal and that America gets to see a rightful election winner for the first time in eight years. Get out there, VOTE ! November 4th 2008 will become the day that the world sees America regain its dignity.

Anonymous   October 28th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

This is the same mentality that strongarmed Bush into the White House in Florida 8yrs ago and kept him there to this day . I regret not being a US citizen to vote for Obama next week. I regret it.

Paula Wesley   October 28th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I think the Attorney General of the State should investigate. This is serious. Charges should be brought.

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW   October 28th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

HEY OBAMA SUPPORTERS,

HOW FOOLISH YOU WILL BE IF OBAMA WINS THIS ELECTION.

JUST WAIT!!!!!!

I'M STILL WONDERING IF OBAMA WINS WHO IS GOING TO RUN THIS COUNTRY. OBAMA ISN'T HE DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE.

SOMEONE WILL HAVE TO WRITE IT DOWN SO HE CAN JUMP ON A STAGE AND READ IT SO THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS CAN WORSHIP HIM.

Paula Wesley   October 28th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

More tricks from the Republicans to steal the election like they did in 2004. They are low and vulgar. They just won't stop. They have become an embarrasment to America. All of them need to be in jail.

W S Svedin   October 28th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

How dirtier it can get? They haven't learned that people still remember the dirty tricks of 2004.

Former Republican   October 28th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

The only way McCain can win is to have one close battle ground state. It's harder to fix the election is six or seven states as it is in one state. There was only one state the that had to be fixed in 2000 and 2004.

Bill   October 28th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

I live in Virginia. I will vote on Nov 4 for Obama. If the state police find out who is behind this, I will recommend to my legislater a very public tar and feathering!!

Peter (CA)   October 28th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Ian-proven widespread voter fraud?
Voter fraud, probably.....widespread, that is the Republican fantasy.
That is the distortion they use to purge voter rolls.

Fraud is YPM and the Lincoln Strategy–two groups funded by the Republicans. YPM gets paid $5 for every voter it registers but ONLY if the voter registers Republican. The applicant says they are not Republican but the worker says it is merely a processing thing. Voters in 3 counties in California have filed complaints. YPM's head was recently arrested for voter registration fraud. Oh, and the money YPM gets? $5 a head from Steve Poizner–California Insurance Commissioner and chair of-wait for it--McCain/California campaign.

McCain--more of the same.

Republicans can't do this the right way by debating policies they apparently have to lie to people and attempt to get them to not vote. How sleazy, the McCain supporters act like we're in elementary school and instead of discussing policies they turn to name calling, lies (paling around with terrorists, raising taxes, which isn't true for 95% of america), and putting out horrible rumors. This makes me wonder if America will ever grow up or if it will always be trapped in the same divisive ways it always has been.

Jerry   October 28th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Do you ever see liberal groups trying this kind of disgusting misinformation?

No.

McCain has the audacity to claim that ACORN is tring to pull off the biggest electoral fraud in history (which is utter garbage), but he is totally silent about this kind of crap as well as GOP led voter purges targeted specifically at Democratic areas.

The sooner we get Obama into office to get a proper HAVA in place the better.

There is a difference between Voter REGISTRATION fraud and Voter FRAUD. When voter registrations reach the Secretary of State, the duplicates are trashed, so in essence, there is only 1 registration for the 100 times someone has registered.

I do think it is highly suspicious that a flyer is sent out in a state with a very tight race. Hopefully the facts will win out!

Georgia Gal   October 28th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

We need stiffer penelties for those that want to mess with our election process. Even the ACORN cons that filled out and turned in fake registration forms should be jailed.

The RNC in Michigan that was trying to take a list of foreclosures into the polling place to deny those hurt worst by this disasterous economy the right to vote should be thrown in jail.

Voting is a right that can not be allowed to be messed with. Start throwing people in jail.

Everyone have their cell phones ready to document voter suppression on election day then send it to CNN!!!

They must take action immediately and thoroughly or they will be equally responsible for the fraud. If people show up to vote on November 5th, it is now THEIR responsibility, and any Republican win would be in question.

If they don't take this action, they were behind it or are smugly enjoying the confusion this has caused.

Seriously?? Do republicans really think we are that stupid? First clue – separate voting dates for the two parties. Second clue – putting the "Democratic leaning" voting date on the Fifth.

Insane. It is time we stuck together, took the high road and just voted. All of us...early, absentee, or in person. The only way to show these crazies that we won't stand for this kind of politics is to get out there in full force and vote for change. Go Obama.

Joe in NJ   October 28th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I can't believe how stupid people are to actually think that someone in the Republican party, i.e. someone in an official capacity, is responsible for these fliers. Do you think they would risk getting caught? Do you know what the ramifications would be?

While the fliers are wrong, I'm sure it's an individual who is responsible for this and it wasn't sanctioned by the Republican party, just as I'm sure no one from the Democratic party told those guys to block Palin's car the other day.

I've really been struggling with this election. I have great affection for John McCain, and I strongly believe that he is the candidate who most keenly understands the next steps we need to take in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the same time, I don't have a lot of confidence in his understanding of the domestic challenges we're going to face over the next four years, and his campaign has been painful to watch. Extremely, extremely painful.

My sense is that McCain believes that a Barack Obama presidency would represent a very dangerous moment for America in the world, and that he sees it as his patriotic duty to do whatever it takes to defeat Obama. This attitude has led McCain to run a campaign that has been ham-fistedly overaggressive and out of touch with the mood of the country.

As for Obama, well, he's certainly run a brilliant campaign. I won't vote for him, and I've never been seriously tempted to become a so-called "Obamacon." I worry that the policy proposals nearest and dearest to Obama will make our economy less resilient and less productive over the long haul.

Why is it that Republicans can only win by cheating?

It just goes to show you what slime they are... I can't believe people still support the GOP when they see crap like this. This is the reason why Republicans are finally going to lose the House, the Senate, and the POTUS all at the same time... because the moral majority of this nation has had enough of their Culture of Corruption.

WAKE UP, AMERICA!!!! VOTE SMART.... NOT SENILE!!!

J-roll   October 28th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

The RNC will do anything to win.

Well, that's okay. It was distributed in Northern Virginia, and they're not real Americans or real Virginians anyway.

Molly   October 28th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Every election cycle we deal with Republican trying to suppress voters. When are these people going to be charged with a crime!

lil   October 28th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Thats one of the reasons why I voted 2 weeks ago. People out there should vote early that way
If you do have a problem sometimes it can be fixed before the election
day but if you have a problem on election day you might not be able to vote.

I hope they find the people responsible for the misinformation.

aliou   October 28th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

What ever happened to McCain?

I can't bearly stand the guy who is behind all this s...t. I can believe the navy would let such a dishonorable man claim vet. It is an insult to the uniform I am still in.

Mc. don't come here telling me it is the campaign because it is your campaign, unless you are saying you are incapable of managing it.
What a shame.

Sam the Butcher   October 28th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Oh boy, this sounds like the work of ACORN, right GOP???

In other news from Pravda, the following is a direct quote from comrade Palin in an interview with the New Yorker magazine:

"we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s COLLECTIVELY Alaskans own the resources. So we SHARE IN THE WEALTH when the development of these resources occurs"

Da, comrade Palin. Marx would be so proud. That is all, "my friends".

can republicans be even more disgusting than this? by hook or crook they want to be in white house to control govenment and they talk about democracy? How DISGUSTING. SHAME on MCBUSH and barbie doll/.

Mikey   October 28th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Surprise! Surprise! Sur–prise!

GOP officials in several states are doing everything they can to purge tens of thousands of voters in each state, many legitimate registrations from voter lists. Add to that, sending too few or old machines to polling places in poor and urban neighborhoods and you have a recipe for disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters.

Then, the GOP makes a big splash about ACORN, where very poor workers made up people to register, that probably will result in next to zero improper votes.... and ignores that the vast majority of the suspect registrations were identified by ACORN and bundled together for identification.

Also, don't forget all the smear campaigns spreading all sort of lie and innuendo about Senator Obama.

CNN – why did you censor my comment about the false quotes from Obama's books that keep circulating over and over again. You allow the lies to be posted but not the identification of the lies as such?

To all of you, any quotes from Obama's books that say he will support the Muslim extremists over America are completely false, as are the other blatantly unpatriotic quotes being circulated. These are smears designed to trick you into voting for McCain. Please don't fall for these and all the other lies about flags, the Pledge of Allegiance, ect.

CNN, please post this. Thank you.

KLEE   October 28th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

From another story about Virginia and overseas absentee ballots being counted or not-

"But here’s the issue: neither the federal absentee write-in ballot itself nor its instructions mentions Virginia’s requirement that the witness’s address be included. In fact, the ballot form doesn’t even have a space to write down the witness address which Virginia requires."

We once again look like a nation of idiots to rest of the world. how are we any different than the extremists that we are fighting against if we do the same things as them. we need to be a decent nation again by not voting for the GOPS this year!

a democrat ploy to take pressure off the L.A.Times not releasing the anti-Israel forum with Barack and Ayers from 2002.

Steve/ Houston,TX   October 28th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

This is becoming more and more a circus event rather than a true democracy. How is this country going to survive this election with all of the hate, empty rhetoric, name calling and divisive tactics? I just hope that this country can survive this election. It seems we are becoming more and more divided with one party believing they are better than the other party. One thing we have learned throughout this election process is that ageism, sexism and racism is still very much alive. This is disheartening and I pray that we get it together for the sake of the future of our country's survival. On a lighter note...don't forget to BARACK THE VOTE!!!!!

Darrel from Denver   October 28th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

And in Florida we have fake campaign workers taking folks ballots and agreeing to 'drop them off so they don't get lost in the mail', all the while never intending to follow through.

And in Colorado we have 10,000 registrations or registered voters being thrown out 'just because'.

In other states we have fencing. In yet others we have clear intimidation and suppression tactics daily.

All for the cause of electing Republicans. Seems to me the 'pro-America' party is not about America at all.

Ian   October 28th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

They're actually doing people a favor by doing this. Since there's proven widespread voter fraud, you can sleep well knowing they didn't steal your vote.

Betsy   October 28th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

This is laughable. Todd Palin or "First Dude" as Sarah so lovingly refers, probably designed the flyer. The ROC probably paid him thousands too! lol lol lol

Terri   October 28th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Why are they trying to disenfranchise the voters of Real Virginia? It's seems outlandish, but some elderly voters would fall for this. We need to protect all voters, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

The redistribution of wealth is a strong message for McCain. Obama should give more than his 1% or less to charity if he going to tell people in their drive ways that he favors to spread the wealth around. Why is he so cheap with his own money?

WOW- what won't they do to win. At this point I think anything is possible. We have witnessed one of the most negative campaigns in history. McCain/Palin rallies have resemble more of a mob mentality than a political round up. I keep waiting for Palin to throw her arm straight up and yell "SIEG HILE" and have all her followers yell it right back to her in agreement. My friends- That's one big group of fascists all right.

The media just puts up what sells. Suck it up, my views have been marginalized in the media for a long time while yours was touted endlessly into two wars and economic chaos. No ones screwing you over on the left. Its your team SUPPRESSING VOTES! Talking about destroying the fabric of democracy. Republicans in Virginia seem to think the end justifies the means. Just suceed with Palin and Alaska and get it over with or REALIZE its democracy. You lost. It happens. Try again later.

Hanlon's razor states:

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

In these days of partisan mistrust and evermore complex voting products and processes, it would be good if we could all ask first whether something was done in error before we decide it was done in evil.

You know, if a political party must resort to these sorts of tricks to fool voters, I don't know how they can be too proud of their affiliation. If you can win on the merits of your leadership, perhaps you should reconsider your positions and policies.

I just read the facts about the entire Joe the Plumber nonsense and the truth is "...on Thursday, October 16, Wurzelbacher said he had misunderstood Obama's plan and that the company he wants to buy makes well less than $250,000 a year — which Obama says means his taxes would not be increased."

Now, there's a vicious video making the email rounds that claim Obama is a dangerous socialist and attempting to blame the entire financial crisis on the Party that hasn't been in control for 12 years. Democrats still don't have a large enough majority to override a Bush veto! Get a grip on reality!

yeah right...   October 28th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

The only democrats who would fall for something like this are the ones who want to vote for McCain.

Another shining hour for the petty republicans.

MikeH   October 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Those silly Republicans. Is there no depth to which they won't sink.

A lesson here, educate the people. The Republican party has attacked education for many years. An ignorant population is more easily misled. Thomas Jefferson recognized this which is why we have public education. and are supposed to have "Government by the People".

j   October 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Sounds like the government should allow people to vote on Nov 5 to correct the fraudulent flyer and make sure that everyone gets the chance to vote. It's dirty tactics like this that need to be curtailed and the party involved fined and put in prison. The Republicans can't win honestly so they resort to this type of thing to undermine the electoral system.

S. Boatman   October 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

This Type Of Tactic Has To Be Coming From The Republicans! Why Else Would It Say For Those Leaning Democrat To Vote A Day Late! I Will Be Voting Straight Democrat This Year All The Way Down The Ticket! And I Know What Day To Vote On!

jim - chicago, illinois   October 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Why are these things always republican-based? Guess that speaks volumes, eh? Why would anyone want to vote for a candidate and party that has to so blatantly cheat to win? John McCain and the republican party should be ashamed of themselves.

Republicans just suck, they don't value freedom or our right to vote.

Frank   October 28th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Why am I not surprised?

The Republican party under McCain and Bush has become a safe-haven for the worst that American politics has to offer. This is just the latest of their increasingly transparent efforts to disenfranchise those whom they cannot convince, frighten, or intimidate.

I hope that President Obama's first appointment is an Attorney General who will aggressively pursue the crimes of the last eight years, including the war crimes.

ANGIE   October 28th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Can the Republicans go any lower then what they have? I would be ashamed right now to belong to that party and call myself a Republican sad people they are!

Ryan in Omaha   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Mike   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

I cannot tell you how badly I hope that they find and nail the SOBs who are responsible for this flyer. They are probably some of the same people who are complaining about "voter fraud", even when all the data says that the problem of voter fraud is virtually non-existent. What hypocrites. THIS FLYER is what is fraudulent, unethical, and immoral.

Jeffrey   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

It's sad that elections have come to this, with independent groups attempting to change the outcome of an election by attempting to suppress voters and their rights. This goes for members of both parties, and I don't think anything will be done about it until the national parties are held accountable. It has become apparent that both parties use these organizations, and use them to skirt current regulations and laws. The national parties should be held accountable for these actions and face sanctions of some sort. It's not just the Republicans, it's not just the Democrats, it's both, and it may be time to hold the national parties accountable for such actions, done on their behalf.

M. Edward Robinson   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

I'm so surprised! Republicans trying to suppress democratic voters?

Andrew   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

really not surprising, we saw it in 2004 now we see it again in 08

Barack the Deceiver   October 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Barack Obama is William Ayers without the bombs.
But just as dangerous.

:-(

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Whoever sent out the fake flyer should be put on trial for treason!

pam Eugene OR   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

If that was not so pathetic it would be funny. The Republicans really will do all they can to steal this election.
It is sick they have to cheat to even have a chance of winning.
I hope the people behind this are arrested and jailed.

Amber   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

More Republican Dirty Tricks.

DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE! VOTE EARLY!!!

Mystrunner   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

It just shows how much people are concerned about the outcome of this race... despicable.

cindy   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Those crazy Republicans are at it again. A guy that went to jail over doing this stuff working for the RNC was on HBO's show Bill Mayher last week. He told of these exact types of accounts of what would happen. So sad to see that the people on the Republican side will go over the top to cry about ACORN, but the practices that they do, they think that is ok.

See Republicans... You have tried to steal elections for years now.

Bring on the Elections   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

McCain will stop at nothing to win, even cheating.. Obama get the lawyers in Virginia.. McCain and the Republican party are slick as ice.

We now found out they cheated GORE in 2000...

Voters beware and get to vote.

Obama/Biden '08

Tony   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

The rumor bust is a big misunderstand. Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are supposed to vote on November 6th, not November 5th. Because of the record turnouts they'll need another extra day to process the votes.

BILL NM   October 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

HA, Scary thing some people are dumb enough to believe.
More Republican dirty tricks.

Independent in Arizona   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Those Republicans will stoop to anything! I guess there is NO limit on their disgusting tactics. No lie is unthinkable and no anti-American voter fraud is beneath them. That just goes to show how important it is to vote for Democratic candidates in order to stamp out the remaining cinders of the Karl Rove/ Republican hold on government.

Hopefully we will see change...and not just more of the same from the Democrats.

katiec   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Well, it is quite obvious which party this misinformation
came from.
They must find, charge and arrest these criminals.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

The Right Wing will resort to out and out thievery with regard to this election, make no mistake. It will take overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters to hold off their fraud.

Michael watching from Canada   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

The police should look for persons with a backwards "B" etched on their faces!

The Obama ground game should quickly hand out flyers in Hampton Roads that provide the proper information for all voters to vote on Nov 4th.

New Day   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Funny how republicans are the supposed "real" americans and yet they are the ones usually trying circumvent democracy and our constitution.

Concerned Voter   October 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Here we go again. The msm trying to make a republican ACORN type situation.

The_Devil_Advocate   October 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

We all know American people are on God's side, in the tradition of our founding-fathers, no matter whatever schemes advocated by the Devil. Simply vote for the Bible, disregarding parties, on November 4.

mbg   October 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Go figure the repugnats would pull something like voter registration errors are one thing. Out an out lieing to suppress votes is another. McCains people need to issue a staement in Va that this is not acceptable behavoir. So sad that people out thier would do this.

Ken   October 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

More attmepted dirty tricks by a filthy party that is intellectually bankrupt. Today's GOP is the very definition of 'loser'.

Brenda in Detroit   October 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Let me guess – the Hampton Roads area of Virginia must be one of those "non-pro America" areas of the state – according to Ms. Palin. Thank you Virginal State Policeand State Board of Elections for being on top of this. The republicans will try ANYTHING to remain if office.

Alison B   October 28th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Just shows what lengths the Republicans would go just to win this election. That is so wicked.

LMS   October 28th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Sad.

Bob in WA   October 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Wow. That's all. Just Wow.

Un-Decided Voter, Now Decided   October 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Let the side shows begin!
Please everyone, VOTE EARLY.
Its very important. There will be more side shows, garanteed.
So PLS VOTE EARLY FOR THE CHANGE WE NEED!!!!!!

Adriana Birmingham, AL   October 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Another ploy by Republicans to suppress voter turn out in a battleground state. The only way they can win is by not talking about the issues, lying about the candidate and keeping legitimate voters from the polls.

Dan   October 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Now THAT is anti-America.

The American Dream is Alive and Well   October 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

That is sad. You Republicans still want to attack Obama for the ACORN voter REGISTRATION crap? ACORN registers voters, if it is not a real person, etc...they obviously can't vote. You need to show ID. But apparently Republicans are getting so nervous they are actually deliberately misleading American voters. Wow...

Bob Indianapolis IN   October 28th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Smells the porcine machinations of Herr Rove and His Dirty Tricks Squad...

cindy   October 28th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

And that is what it is CRIMINAL!

This is makes it that more important for as many of us as possible to VOTE EARLY!!!

Cast your vote NOW if you can in your state.... Don't let the long lines deter you...

Tommy   October 28th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

This has the RNC and Karl Rove written all over it.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 28th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Sounds like more Rove/Limbaugh/RNC crap to me.

Nice way to treat Americans – NOT

I've already voted early for Obama/Biden. Please do the same wherever you can.

Sara   October 28th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

The desperate tactics of the GOP.
