(CNN) – The economy has been Issue #1 for voters in CNN’s polls for several months. As Election Day approaches, the foreclosure crisis means new concerns for some voters who have reached out for information on CNN’s voter hotline.
“My home was recently foreclosed on and I don’t know if I’ll be able to vote in my registered precinct,” a caller for Jacksonville, Florida said in a recent call to CNN. “I was able to for the primary but I don’t know what’s going to happen now.”
Florida has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation. Now the rumor that a foreclosure may disqualify someone who is otherwise a properly registered Florida voter has become so widespread that the Secretary of State has addressed the issue on its “Election Myths vs Facts” Web page.
Here’s what the Web page says about foreclosures and voting in Florida:
MYTH: If your house is under foreclosure, you will not be able to vote.
FACT: A foreclosure notice does not necessarily mean that a person no longer resides in the home, as people often remain in the home after foreclosure begins and are sometimes able to refinance the home. Voters whose homes have been foreclosed but who remain in their homes may continue to vote in their assigned precinct. Voters who have physically moved from their foreclosed residence with no intention of returning to that address as their residence may still vote, but should provide a change of address to the supervisor of elections. You must vote in your correct precinct.

My house was foreclosed and I moved but because of how enthused I am about this election I didn't take anything for granted. I had to change my address with NY Board of Elections. I am only concerned though that my children who are first time voters didn't get their cards yet and their names haven't yet appeared in the voters registry.

I used to live in FL until 2004 and I am still disenfranchised about the election in 2000. I think that the RNC is doing anything in their power to do the same thing. I am going to watch this race very close on Tuesday. This is the last election the Supreme Court will be able to give to RNC. I am so discusted by Republicans. I beg to differ on this point. McCain and the rest of GOP have continually pushed for deregulation of the financial market. This means that unscrupulous lenders and investors took advantage of the fact that there was no federal oversight. The blame is squarely on the GOP's shoulders and no amount of spin on your part, or on the part of Rush and his hate jock buddies is ever going to change that. Senator Obama taught Constitutional Law at Harvard which is a plus for all of us because the constitution is a governing factor. The $660 million Obama raise would not but too many foreclosed upon homes. Also, many, many small contributors were the ones who contributed that money and they want change. Obama's TV "infomercial" was Obama trying to further the "change" movement for them. It was not an "entitlement" or an "arrogance" on Obama's part. Our periodic census, by which we determine not only representation but a myriad other crucial aspects of society, requires a person to declare ALL persons living in their household at the time of the census (time specific). The government allows one person in the household to declare all others, none of which must actually be present at the time of the declaration. It is the word of the declarer that determines the outcome. Under penalty of law. If my word is good enough for the government to determine political representation, funds allocated for a variety of measures, etc., and definitely good enough for determining other persons' whereabouts on a given day, why isn't my word good enough to determine my OWN residency for casting my OWN vote?
