Court: Michigan must return purged names to voter rolls

Sen. Obama campaigned in East Lansing, Michigan at the beginning of this month.

Sen. Obama campaigned in East Lansing, Michigan at the beginning of this month.

(CNN) – A federal appeals court has agreed with a lower court and ordered the state of Michigan to add the names of 5,500 voters back onto the voters rolls.

The names were purged when mail sent to the voters by local election officials was returned as undeliverable. Purging the names was permitted under Michigan law but violated the federal National Voter Registration Act which limits the circumstances under which a state may remove a voter from the rolls.

The appeals court explained that Michigan’s practice caused affected voters to “face wrongful disenfranchisement.”

The addresses should have never been taken away from the list. Are you supposed to notify them when you move. If so, that is something that they need to let the voters know.

I know there is nothing that can be done now, but after the election, a nationwide voter registration site on the internet should be created. A company like Google could help design such a site and make it secure and foolproof. When an election time comes, a county can download the list of registered voters. If someone moves, they can edit their voter registration record. No purging necessary.

I feel an online voting site is also a possibility.

    Any thoughts on this?

Typical democrat strategy....stealing votes and defrauding the public at every turn.

This is what McCain meant when he said " I have them right where I want them" Hopefully, these attempts by his supporters to disenfranchise his fellow citizens because their homes have been foreclosed etc will fail.
By the way, McCain would have done an informecial if he could afford but then he can't afford so all he can do is insult his opponent for that.

You know what they say, when you can't win honestly just cheat. The American people are not going to let the republican thieves steal this election this time around. These jokers have tried every evil trick in the book.

Nice try Repugs! Your crooked antics to steal the election is NOT going to work this time! Makes me sick the lengths those slimeballs will go to attempt to deny our RIGHT TO VOTE as AMERICANS!
That is why EVERY POSSIBLE VOTE for Obama needs to be cast to help make sure the Repugs don't repeat 2000 & 2004!!

All you Dems are doing is further deviding this country with you arrogant posts. Reading most of these it is obvious that most of you are part time political obsevers and will atke anything that Obama and the mainstream media will feed you. The reality is that Obama is running as moderate while his record proves otherwise. I hope I am wrong but do not think so.

I will no longer visit this site as many pro-McCain posts just don't make it onto the post and you poster just create more anger and division. Thanks for rallying the base!

How about all the other states where the GOP is purging names? Have they found who put out the misleading flyers in Virginia telling Democrats to vote on a different day? Will there be enough voting machines available in minority communities in typically red states? And...will they work properly?

We need to stay vigilant, and we need to GOTV!

The GOP is the biggest perpetrator of voter suppression and fraud in this country by a wide margin. The worst of ACORN is a blip on the radar compared to the crap the Republicans pull.

This is how 45 million blacks will be able to vote this year even though there are only 13 million eligible blacks in the whole country.

When oh when can we get this election process working properly.....why are there always problems everytime.....it comes around every 4 years and wouldn't you think by now that it should go without a hitch?
All we want is for EVERYBODY to vote and make sure EVERY vote is counted...no repeat of 2004....we want this election to be won fairly with no sleazy tricks or games.

If McCain wins, it is rigged. There is no way Obama has 100,000 show up in St. Louis and the result is a tight race. If they steal this one, I'm out, never voting again. PATHETIC!!!!

Why look to Mr Obama for your hero ? Live your life free and with courage to succeed with the freedoms given to you . No one fought and died for socialism , they fought against it . You sell yourself and your freedom cheap. Not only cheap , but without a fight , allowing and laughing at voter fraud .

I agree with many other voters – If McCain STEALS this election, I will NEVER have faith in our political system again. Ever!! It is one thing to win a race fairly but it is another to steal it and run to the finish line yelling, "Look what I did!!!"

No Way. No How, No McCain/Palin...
