Sen. McCain toured the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans with his wife, Cindy, in April of this year.

(CNN) - The lingering aftermath of Hurricane Katrina looms large over New Orleans residents this election season. CNN’s Voter Hotline has received several calls from New Orleans residents wondering where to vote, whether former evacuees are still registered, and how to vote absentee after being displaced.

Joseph Harris of New Orleans was confused about whether his temporary displacement after the storm would affect his registration.

“I was calling to make sure I was on the list. I want to make sure my information had been changed back now from Houston where I was evacuated during Katrina, and I just want to make sure I’m able to vote on November 4,” Harris asked on the Hotline.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State, Katrina’s lingering impact doesn’t extend to the voter rolls. “There has been no purging because people were displaced by Katrina. Basically, they can vote if we have a good address,” said Jacques Berry from the Louisiana Secretary of State office. “If you live in a homeless shelter and have an address, you can register to vote in Louisiana.”

Katrina victims who were displaced and are still planning to vote in Louisiana should call the state’s toll free number, (800) 883-2805. The rules for those displaced by the storm are no different than other residents, Berry said. “There’s nothing specific to them.”

The Hotline has also gotten calls from New Orleans parish voters who haven’t received their absentee ballots. “There’s a good chance that all the absentee ballots are out now. We want all voters to have the opportunity to vote. I am sure all absentee ballots will be out with sufficient time,” Berry said. “We want all voters to have the opportunity to vote.”

If you are a resident in the state of Louisiana who has questions regarding your registration status or where you should go to vote, you can visit geauxvote.com or call 1 (800) 883-2805.

To Allen and Hard Working American: I'm a Katrina survivor, a single mom with 3 children. I lost both my business and my home (I had no flood insurance because I didn't need it where I lived.)Yes its been 3 years and in an ideal world our lives should be back to normal and just peachy but that is so far from reality for us. I hope to God you never experience what we've been through, the loss, hopelessness and illnesses.I'm educated and I have a good job in another state but we aren't making it with this falterning economy and are one month away from being homeless again. My savings are exhausted, I can't provide health insurance to my kids and my credit was ruined. It kills me as a mom to not be able to give my kids the basics that other kids take for granted. This economy is killing us and we need a real leader like Obama to turn this country around. Bush failed us like he did this country. McCain voted against aid to Katrina victims even though he went stomping through the Ninth ward like he cared. I've lost hope but I do believe Obama is the right person to get this country on track. Stop judging what you obviously don't understand.

Yea right!!   October 31st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Shame on you Louisiana, my home state. After Katrina, how could you guys possibly vote republican. Oh yea, I forgot. It's the old, old south. Your government let you suffer for days. I cried & cried for days. The suffering I witnessed was disgusting and didn't have to happen. Remember, it was not the hurricane itself, it was desertion of the U. S. government at the time they were needed more than any other time in my lifetime.

The comedians are worried that if Senator Obama wins they will not have a lot of material with which to work. All they will need to do is to replay the tapes on McCain/Palin and they will find material to last for the next three years when the Republicans most likely will field an equally pathetic ticket. Ever since the George Bush got to the throne every dick, tom and harry, even Joe the "plumber" thinks that he can ride the republican's bus to the Capitol. Stupid is as stupid does.

This is just an exercise in futility because I know that your very bias Moderator will exclude this comment as usual.

Obama/Biden 08!!!! Right choice!!!! We need CHANGE ! I hope a light turns on for the majority of Americans. Vote for OBAMA HE IS THE REAL CHANGE!!!!!

Voted for OBAMA on Tuesday in Louisiana   October 31st, 2008 8:47 pm ET

I live in LA and was here during Katrina. I'm in Baton Rouge so Ike was worse up here than Katrina. 2 things about Katrina. 1 – the people of N.O. were told to evacuate but not everyone was able 2 – the fat cats in LA did have and still have a state budget surplus but are just wanting FEMA to pay for everything. The majority of displaced Katrina victims that are still displaced were seniors, disabled, etc. Luckily I got to vote though.

Texas Teacher   October 31st, 2008 8:45 pm ET

I hope everyone gets the chance to vote.... whether victims of Katrina or Ike... this is America... .not red or blue as Obama says, but the United States of America! The right to vote for the candidate of our choice is inherent in our constitution. Obama taught constitutional law for ten years... you teach what you love!

It should be against the law to defame the character of another person.... whether it is a campaign for the President of America or not.... this country is about honor! Honest voting places run by people who respect our right to vote whether they agree with us or NOT! That is what America is about... that is our history until these black hearts in power took our honor away!

That is what has made Obama's campaign so wonderful. He owes no one, but the People for his election. We supported him, and he will support us! Not the wealthiest 5% of this country... which includes Bush, McCain, Cheney, and all their cronies. Of course, they don't want to give up their good thing! And they will lie, cheat, and steal (votes) to keep that status quo!

Ed   October 31st, 2008 8:41 pm ET

The thing that worries me is that it took McCain so long to care about New Orleans. Never mind the fact that his VP choice sealed my vote for Obama, after his visit to NO, it became clear to me that he doesn't give a **!! about these people at all, he can't even fake interest.

Did you hear the latest?

Governor Palin whined today that the media is taking away her right to attack Barak Obama with lies and innuendo, and that somehow they're steppig on her "First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."

Ye Gods and Little Fishes! How is it possible for one person to be so dumb!

The First Amendment protects the right of the mainstream media to ask questions. Not the other way around.

Maybe she's right. Maybe Alaska SHOULD secede from the Union, if she's an example of how smart they are up there....

BUSH + McCAIN = HISTORICAL DISGRACE

These two fools were eating cake and celebrating John McCain's birthday while hundreds of families were DYING during the devastating hurricane.

For Republicans to EVEN think about putting John McCain in the White House after watching him MORE focused on celebrating his birthday than dying Americans is beyond mind boggling!!! It's the lowest of the low for even John McCain. He still did NOT go visit Louisiana until a YEAR LATER, and that was because he was running in the Primaries.

Louisiana,

Your friend is Obama. He will give you the tax breaks and help you need, not like Bush who sat on his thumbs and did nothing when Katrina hit. That guy McCain, well he is Bush's buddy, voted along with him 92% of the time, and he wants to take more from you, wants to tax your healthcare benefits, deny you the tax breaks that the rich folks get, and that guy McCain, he and Bush gave tax breaks and incentives to companies that sent our jobs overseas and put a lot of hard working people out of work and into poverty. Obama wants to bring the jobs back home here to the USA. Lousiana would look so beautiful in blue on Tuesday.

Paul Wall in Dallas   October 31st, 2008 6:11 pm ET

thanks for posting the information CNN. this is journalism at its best, giving information to people who really need it. the people of New Orleans and throughout Louisiana and Mississippi were very victimized during the storm and (long) afterwards (and it still is going on). false information that would deceive or misinform voters must be commonplace as i know it is in Texas. you wonder how many southern states would be red if voters, especially minorities, were correctly informed. i have a friend who was told when he registered that since he had been arrested he could not vote in Texas or anywhere else. it's just "good old boy" lies endemic in the bureaucracy. thanks again, CNN!

JackOfHeart   October 31st, 2008 6:05 pm ET

One very important issue that both candidates didn't really explain much is the issue of foreign policy. I hope "CHANGE" this time wouldn't be just limited to the Economy and the health care system, but change should include changing our unethical and twisted foreign policies and treat other countries as friends, just like how Israel is our friend. I suggest that BOTH McCain and Palin go run for presidency in ISRAEL since they have proven to be more loyal to Israel than to America. They couldn't speak clearly of a solid plan for America, but they had a clear plan to support Israel blindly without a question, even if they had to go against their morals and create more enimies around the world. Even if it ment invading Syria next. We really have stretched our ethics, lately, for Israel wich made us loose our leadership in the world economically, politically and morally. Not because we have so much in common with them but because Israel succeeded in making their enimies ours. Politicians in D.C have become the "big brothers" of Israel. And that was planted by extreamist-foreign-interest lobbies in D.C (AIPAC). I suggest that BUSH, McCAIN AND PALIN should be deported to Israel and run for presidency there. PEACE=FOREIGN INTEREST LOBBIES OUT OF D.C.

Remember how well government took care of Katrina. I'm from the Houston area, they didn't do so great here either. One job- get ice and food to people. Sounds simple enough. The government botched it again. Not W, not the white house, a bunch of tax munching bureaucrats. The government can't handle a simple job and yet you all want them to handle your livelyhoods, your healthcare, your pensions, your piece of pie.

Back in February of this year a reporter asked Mccain about Latinos. Mccain replied "They are good for manual labor." The reporter then asked "Is that all?" Mccain smiled and turned away from the reporter who didn't have a camera but he filmed it on his cell phone, that is why Mccain didn't think he was live. Very interesting to know what Mccain thinks of Latinos.

Good grief, McCain and Bush were busy eating cake while Katrina was destroying New Orleans. Then Bush couldn't even do a good job rebuilding Katrina and helping families. To make matters worse, earlier in the campaigns, while Obama wanted to set up a permanent disaster fund for any future events, McCain had the gall to oppose that and say...let the insurance companies handle it. I am so surprised that Louisiana even considers McCain for a president!

the only way McCain wins anywhere is by nasty tricks, lies, purging voters, and whatever means he can use. I feel sorry for Louisiana, quite frankly, that McCain and Bush can continue to "fool them"

Not everyone has an fair go at it. Beleive it or not, some people face Unsurmountable odds despite how hard they try. It happens, denying it won't make it go away.. The Republican leadership showed us that.
It is time that we have a government that has a heart along with an iron fist.
Maybe under the Dems, our soldiers will have body armor BEFORE the war starts. Maybe our eqipment will be the right stuff at the right time. Maybe under the Dems we can have Victory Before the conflict.. that means we never get to blows... not all disagreements have to result in war..

"We must be the change we wish to see in the world." – Mahatma Gandhi

That disqualifies Obama but does qualify McCain/ Palin! :)

Sharon from Virginia   October 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

The people of New Orleans (Katrine victims) should have been working on this months ago. Why is someone calling this late asking if they can vote. We can blame the Repugs for the mistreatment of the New Orleans victims during Katrina but their right to vote and where to vote should have been establish long before October 31, 2008 by each individual. As Bill Cosby would say "Come On People". Obama has made it clear over and over again every American has to engage in this process. At some point each person has to take responsiblility for themselves and their actions. So at this point in the process I do not feel sorry for any adult that has not done his/her part to make sure that they can/will vote.

SHELLI1313   October 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

John Mccain and Bush stated that they were doing a good job as far as Katrina was concerned and "Good Job Brownie" What Kind of Mess was that? The Katrina Victims are still suffering and sick so Mccain/palin need to go and go as fast as they can. Try living there for a month in the GETTO since Brownie did such a good job. Live with the Katrina Poor

"Hardworking American for McCain"

Under the McCain administration you will be working that much harder. Only for the Thugs on Wall street to jump out of the window with your earning with a Golden Parachute.

Hope you don't have any sons under the age of 42. They are sure to be drafted for War.

Another grim reminder about letting the Rushpublicans control government.

Remember George Bush celebrating McCain's birthday while New Orleans was drowning?

.. Lets Get Real. Mr.&Mrs. McCain gave an Academy & Emmy Award performance with their Expressions of anticipation, wonderment, and amazement at Steve's [joe] Failure to appear.

It is heartening to know that the people of New Orleans will be ABLE to vote, regardless of how they vote. For them to lose that right after losing so much else would be unimaginable.

I hope to make my 3rd annual pilgrimage to New Orleans over the holidays this year. I am sickened that so much STILL needs to be done there.

Blessed be, New Orleans... blessed be.

deb in Colo   October 31st, 2008 5:16 pm ET

I'm still scratching my head that after the Katrina/FEMA mess – why the people of Louisiana are still leaning Republican. Do you like how that was handled? You want the same group in charge???

Rob   October 31st, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Yes, let's continue the myth that Bush was behind Katrina. Never mind that DEMOCRAT mayor Ray Nagin sat firmly protected while scores of school busses sat empty in a parking lot instead of being used to evacuate people. Or maybe the amazingly stupid claims by Obama pal Louis Farakhan who said that he believed that Bush backed agents blew up the levees.

But then again, modus operandi for the libs, blame everyone but themselves and concoct elaborate stories of fantasy.

Obama, you and your koolaid drinking minions are the myth. And you will fool and steal your way into a job you are so unqualified for, ruin this country, and still manage to get your mindless lackeys to blame the Republicans for it.

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 31st, 2008 5:13 pm ET

To the so-called "Hard Working American for McCain"– what you don't want to understand is that not everyone has enough extra money, even after three years, to rebuild a life destroyed by something like Katrina.

If you're scraping to get by in good times, you're flat ruined by tough times. Maybe when your house gets foreclosed you'll understand.

And I doubt you're all that hard working. Hard working people tend to be a little more understanding of the troubles that befall others.

You're a jerk!! If we had had a decent president at the time, maybe they wouldn't have the problems they have now. Now you want to put another sorry republican in the oval office so he can screw thios country up a little more.

Shame on you!!

Hard Working American for Obama   October 31st, 2008 5:11 pm ET

FEMA and the Republicans failed the people of New Orleans with their mismanagement and utter lack of care for those displaced by the hurricane. For someone to suggest that after three years, citizens of New Orleans who are still displaced because of the lack of government will and coordination in rebuilding the city, are lazy is just plain hateful. But it's more than just that: by the content and tone of the first post, it is clear that this vitriol stems from nothing more and nothing less than pure, unadulterated racism. And racism has no place in the United States. You ge the hell out of this country!

"I can't believe you Katrina victems are still singing the blues. It's been over 3 years. If you haven't done something with your life by now then you probably never will. Honestly, I wish you'd get the hell out of my town. You bums have done nothing but create problems!"

Hard Working American:

The only Bums in this scenario are the people who were in power the day the WORST natural disaster in US HISTORY struck. Had your President and your Republican Senator now running for President thought more about the citizens of New Orleans and rescue efforts and less about photo-ops, there wouldn't be a need for self-righteous comments such as yours due to the fact that there probably would have been a decent plan in place to help those same people who are still struggling.

God forbid you find yourself in the same situation one day. You never know.

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 31st, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Louisiana has grown more conservative since Katrina, regrettably because of the exodus of traditional Democratic voters. Those remaining, who seem to fall more in the Sarah Palin (far right) than even John McCain (moderate) camp, are voting purely on social rather than economic issues, and more to spite the departed Democratic voters than out of a real understanding of the issues facing their state or how disastrously a Republican administration would address those issues.

ines   October 31st, 2008 5:06 pm ET

This is completely sad that a whole region has been neglected like this after the destruction of hurricane Katrina.

The way the Bush administration, who was supported by McCain over 90% of the time during this period, treated the people of New Orleans would be reason enough to run to the polls and vote for Obama.

Bush failed us badly too many times. McCain supported those bad decisions far too much. NEVER AGAIN – people. WE HAVE A HUGE COMBINED POWER IN OUR VOTES.

To: Hard Working American for McCain,

Karma is not nice; remember Hurricanes Gustav and Ike? Ask the residents of Galveston, Houston and surrounding areas about those hurricanes; and please remember, tornadoes and floods can happen any where.

Stafelle   October 31st, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Ok, Katrina was 3 years ago. Come on people, give me a break! They should have thought about this a long time ago...perhaps in the beginning of 2007. There is no excuse for these people not to vote. It has been 3 years!

sensible Cape Coral FL   October 31st, 2008 5:05 pm ET

If you are an American citizen, you have the right to vote even if you live on a park bench. Got that, Republicans?

sabuc for Obama   October 31st, 2008 5:05 pm ET

I was thinking that LA would have been blue, but now that I realize that it was the fat cats in LA that could afford to stay or were not affected by Katrina are probably the ones that would benefit the least from Obama's plans. Sad to read about these things, but it looks like Bush's plan to ignore LA is being revealed even more now.

@ "Hard Working American for McCain", you are despicable with comments like that. Sounds like we will be the ones saying the same thing to you come Nov 5th!!

Bald ex-warrior   October 31st, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Personally I think this is criminal that after this many years, people are still in the limbo of 'temporary housing'
Katrina should be nothing but a memory now. How can the Republicans wave their flags and signs in pride when it was under their watch that the tragic effects of inaction and incompetence happened. They had their chance and they showed America just how corrupt and bankrupt their ideas are. Too bad they had to bankrupt soo many citizens along with them.

sf   October 31st, 2008 4:59 pm ET

As an ardent Obama supporter, I would say this is one area where I wish there would have been more focus during the election.

I believe he will right the ship once and for all when he takes office.

Hard Working American for McCain   October 31st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Scott NYC Independent   October 31st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

This was part of the republican party calculation. They don't want anyone near New Orleans and its surrounding towns to vote in this election. They are fully aware that the day after the Hurricane George Bush was at John McCains ranch cutting a birthday cake.

REMEMBER AND NEVER FORGET
Law suites should be brought for intentionally disenfranchising these voters; its a criminal act – one of many committed by the Bush administration.

VOTE EARLY/VOTE OBAMA   October 31st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Today is Friday afternoon, offices will be closed this weekend so that only leaves Monday to get this information. Not a lot of time for the voters. I hope most of these people have already checked their voting information out by now.

Lest there some doubters, YES he is a jolly goodfella and yes you can fight that Gremlin called SUBCONCIOUS RACISM and share history with everyone. Because we are making it in November.

Forget PALIN MCAIN.

BARACK OBAMA is BLACK meets WHITE;he is JAPAN(Obama) meets AMERICA; he is A f RICA meets A me RICA; he is HEBREW(Barack=blessing) meets ARAB (Hussein) meets Africa(Obama) ;he is YOUNG meets AGED!!!!!! HE IS THE IDEAL; ANYONE EXCLUDED ???? Please say so.

I sure hope those folks get to vote – they've been pushed aside by our government too many other ways. Don't take their rights from them.

Commonwealth of Virginia   October 31st, 2008 4:54 pm ET

This is one way the GOP is going to steal Louisiana away. I'm sure the GOP slime down there are purging votes. If it can happen to people in Michigan who haven't been displaced, it definitely can happen in Louisiana.
