Joe the "Plumber" appeared on stage to campaign for McCain and was put front and center by the campaign as representing the average guy. That makes him a figure in the campaign and subject to being checked out. So we find out he is in fact not a licensed plumber, that he has a history of spousal abuse and non-payment of taxes and that he admittedly knows "enough about foreign policy to be dangerous" but still thinks he's qualified to say that Israel will be destroyed if Obama is elected. Sad, but the sign of a desperate campaign.

On the other hand, Obama's half aunt on his father's side of the family who he hasn't had much to do with is living quietly–if illegally–in the USA and has nothing to do with the campaign is apparently outed by a Federal public servant for political purposes. There's a way to deal with overstays, that isn't it.

Sorry, checking out Joe the "Plumber" is fair enough; going after non-campaigning distant relatives is desperate. We've heard nothing from McCain about how he's going to fix America's problems but more tax cuts for the rich and carrying on Bush's dumb war which has cost nearly 4500 coalition troops their lives and the taxpayer 10 BILLION a month. If the story is true, them the law should be followed in her case as in any other immigration case. The local housing officials should determine how she was able to live in public housing and get that loophole closed.

However, the real crime here is the leaking of private information to help a campaign. It is shameful and the perpetrator should go to jail. The government has a lot of information about all of us and we are protected by privacy laws. What if it was your private data being used to attack a political enemy?

According to Senator Obama, he had very little contact with his father growing up. I've read his father had several wives and children while living in Kenya. Since his father's side of the family didn't raise him, it is understandable that Senator Obama might not be close to them. I had an aunt here illegally from Ireland. I had no idea she was an illegal until she died. As a federal government employee whose work entails close and direct Homeland Security and Immigration Services' contact for status verification of aliens' lawful/unlawful U.S. presence, I know the leak had to involve governmental insider release of secured information that is prohibted by law! Totally unacceptable! Investigation for identifying person(s) is appropriate and once discovered, disciplinary actions should be exercised to the fullest!

The real focus of any investligation should be whether Obama was in touch with his aunt and knew of her illegal status and the deportation order against her. While I am disturbed about this story as it is a fly in the ointment of Obama’s excellent closing campaign and a distraction from the profound challenges that face this country there are significan specifics to be recognized.

Mexico is a country which is economically disadvantaged. Illegal aliens come to the US seeking a better standard of living and financial advancement. Kenya is a country experiencing serious political violence and this woman came to the US seeking political asylum. This is a profoundly different issue from the current immigration debate. I do hope that once he is elected, Obama will address this situation promptly and legally.
