Hank Williams, Jr. has performed at several McCain-Palin campaign events.

(CNN) — In the waning hours of the presidential race, the toughest shot against Barack Obama may not have come from the Republican ticket, but from country music star Hank Williams, Jr.

The country-rocker, a campaign trail fixture who has penned a special song for the GOP ticket called "McCain-Palin Tradition," suggested Monday Obama doesn't like the national anthem.

“You know, I’m usually at Monday Night Football tonight, but Colorado, this is a lot more important tonight. Join me now in our national — you know, that song that, uh, Mr. Obama’s not real crazy about, we’re singing it right now," he said before performing his version of the song.

Williams, Jr., aka Bocephus, also performed "McCain-Palin Tradition," which includes a line that suggests Obama has "terrorist friends."

After playing both songs, Palin thanked Williams, Jr. for his help on the campaign trail, and did not acknowledge the national anthem remark.

The comments appear to reference a long-debunked e-mail rumor that Barack Obama refuses to put his hand on his heart when the national anthem is played. That e-mail stems from a 2007 photograph showing the Illinois senator with his hands by his side during a performance of the song.

The e-mail also stated Obama said the national anthem is a "war-like message" and should be swapped for a tune like "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing."

Obama, in fact, has never said those things.

This election will soon be over and not a minute too soon. Then all of the educated fools from uneducated schools can fade back to their meaningless lives and benefit from the change ahead despite their uninformed desire to block it. Hand over heart indeed. With the state of our economy, whether a hand is over the heart or not is irrelevant.

This is just another example of how the Republicans allow "real idiots" like this "Bocephus Hank" to spread lies and hatred. Sarah Palin does the same on her speeches but we the people are not dumb as they think we are.
This Republican campaign for president is the worst in history.

President Obama, let's change the World!

Keates   November 4th, 2008 2:32 am ET

You should feel sorry for McCain really. He's generally trying to run a credible campaign but his support base is infested with numb skulls and the unfortunate, credible, moderate Republicans are overrun and are being alienated from what was originally a respectable movement with noble roots.

Imagine the scene; Mr McCain, his wife and friends hold a dinner party and invite the world to sample their hospitality. Then in walks the red-headed cousin and urinates in the punch bowl!

People like Hank should learn that opening their mouths and spouting such rubbish is DAMAGING to the Rep. ticket, not beneficial. To win an election you must appeal to your traditional support base AND build bridges with undecideds and even the opposition.

The world outside the USA overwhelmingly wants Obama/Biden 08.

Here's HOPING.

McCain-Gov.Palin are real strong supporters of the technology of Clean Coal . I Think Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin is like the ole Stonewall Jackson song" I'm just an "ole-chunk of coal" ;" But, "They goin be a diamond someday",and someday soon; like today , Yes, Mam!! "All The Rawdy Friends Are Coming OVER TONIGHT" WE Going To Party!!!!!

Where are you jerkoffs gettin this stuff from?

That's for the pledge to the flag – get it?
Why are you phony patriots makin this stuff up?

Hank Jr. may feel like a Dixie Chick, day after tomorrow…

chris   November 4th, 2008 2:19 am ET

I guess I'll be "electing" to never buy another Hank Williams Jr. record. What a disappointment he must be to the memory of his father. But, you know… its just this type of hostile, nasty, hateful devisive message that has driven so many Americans to Obama and his message. Indeed, this message about a candidate for the presidency of our great nation is as anti-american as it gets. It is one thing to legitimately disagree with a candidate's message or position on the issues. Its entirely different to "attack" the person with such a vicious disregard for the issues (or the truth). Note, this election was neck and neck just before the republican convention. It was at that convention that the right wing hate mongers took over the McCain campaign… and they haven't come up for air yet… even at this late hour in the campaign. And what have they accomplished… they are now severely behind in the polls… sad…

He is nothing but a low life hypocrite , and a loser in my book . I wonder when his next CD , album will appear ?……
He really makes the John McBush / Sarah Palin ticket look " cheezy ", and dysfunctional . Looks like he sleeps in his clothes , and does not bathe .

The last three paragraphs of this article are a masterful example of misdirection. Yes, there is a glurge email that was false. There is also the truth about why Obama (in his own words) didn't put his hand over his heart during the national anthem. Weighed alongside his reasons for not wearing a flag pin, and given that he is running for the highest office of our great country, his explanations are not acceptable. IMO his patriotism is suspect.

Not getting any airplay on radio means that nobody cares.

Today we can say President Obama.

Rob   November 4th, 2008 1:38 am ET

So let me get this straight, Hank Jr, a person who has spent decades singing songs (and acting out those songs) about drinking, drugs and sex, is now a spokesperson for the evangelicals. Why does this not surprise me?

The more I read about this election and the things that are said the more worried I become. America is no longer a great country, no longer a moral leader and no longer an economic superpower. How can the world give you their respect with such vitriol and division amongst your own people? The American century is over for you. I hope Obama wins for your sake. You'll need his intelligence and disposition to soften the landing.

The rich vote republican because they do not believe in government handouts. They work hard for their money and do not want to give away money because the gov't says so. Their money their choice for charity not big brother.

Remember if you hate the bailout of wall street then you are not a fan of gov't giving money to help out those who can not do it alone.

And in Mary's words, you must be rich- because only rich people think like this and then vote republican..

I respect this country, I was born here. But I do not put hand over heart to pledge allegiance to this country's flag because my allegiance is to God. I stand respectfully in silence. I respect the flag as a symbol but do not use symbols or images to worship.
I don't break laws or cheat on taxes, etc.

I betcha if you told a drunken redneck to burn the flag to be cool among his friends, he/she would do it. I don't think a true redneck has depth of understanding. It's all surface bravado, and repeating conservative talk radio sound bites.

Obama for '08   November 4th, 2008 1:29 am ET

People…

You only place your hand over your heart for THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE!! And Obama is American. He grew up in Hawaii! How many ignorant people are there really in this country? McCain did nothing for my state of Arizona, was part of the Keating 5, and has a wife who was addicted to prescription drugs! Obama may not have much experience, but he doesn't have the kind of baggage that McCain already has. Who gives a hoot if he was a POW?! That was about 40 years ago! My dad was a Vietnam Vet, but that doesn't mean I think he has the experience or should be President! For all you McCain/Palin supporters, get ready for change!!

you have to be kidding me…. To think either of these candidates are going to bring about change is naive. Dumb Americans at it once again and I was born and raised in America. Hear the plan for change before voting for someone who promises it. All politicians are the same and he will have his own agenda when he gets into office. Neither candidate is a great leader nor are they great for this country. I recommend not voting for once in my life. America can produce better candidates for the position. It's all about leverage and these two certainly have it with their parties………

Jane   November 4th, 2008 1:27 am ET

I am convinced that most of the posters here are under the age of fifteen and by and large don't have a clue about politics in the United States of America. It is a known fact that very few of you know any history of the country at all and how politics have ALWAYS been conducted here. Find a good history of American politics that actually tells how the campaigns were run all the way back to the beginning and then maybe you will have a little more understanding of the traditions that have existed since the Republic was founded. Most of you are wet-behind-the-ears kids trying to play at politics. I think the voting age should be raised to about twenty-five years at least to give you modern day clueless people a chance to learn a little history – maybe you could learn at least a bit by osmosis if you lived long enough. These politicians are not nearly as scary as you are !

I was a Repulican for years- for a number of reasons: Lincoln was a Repulican, they "say" they are for individual rights and freedoms and small government- Sadly, however, I found republicans can argue about fiscal responsiility (and then spend like no others in American History)- they can claim they want democracy overseas (and yet support the repressive saudi arabian regime that supplied 15 of the 19 hi-jackers on 9/11- even osama himself and they even flew a bunch of saudis home secretly after 9-11) they freak out at the notion of re-distriution of wealth – but it all really boils down to the fact that they are racist and heartless- they see homeless people and think scum- they couldn't end over to help a brother in need in america- they love spewing hate and they will all tell you they are good christians- they are big 'ole hypocrites- I am sad that I was a republican and ought into all that hate of my fellow man- I am sorry Jesus for eing such a judgemental, bad person.

There is blood in the water, and it is not democratic juices…

Condolences to Senator Obama for his loss today.

It was very moving to see both mourning in his face, and a steady delivery of his campaign message.

The toughest thing Madelyn Dunham ever built wasn't a World War II era bomber, though that was tough Rosie The Riveter action, she built a future Persident with a "spine of steel" and courage in the face of adversity.

I'm sorry folks, you couldn't compare the supreme character of the Obama \ Biden ticket to the McCain / Palin group, which has already dropped McCain's name from party materials in the rallies today…

Everytime I hear this republican ticket speak, you have to really wonder who with a sane thought in their head could consider these folks.

RIP Grandma, and much success to the Obama / Biden ticket tomorrow.

I think people should get there facts straight before they shoot off their mouth. Hank Jr. did make a bit of an idiot out of himself.
So what are the facts- Obama is a friend of Ayers and kicked off his OPolitical career at Ayer's home. Obama spent 20 years in Rev. wright's church, but never listened to a sermon. Obama was called the Messiah by Farrakhan. Obama wants to use your money to help those who will not help themselves, but lets his brother live in squalor in Kenya and his aunt here in the USA. Obama made a "Gaffe" about his religion, but was corrected by George Stephanopoulos. Biden himself said Obama was not ready to be commander and chief and he did not say that about Clinton, Edwards or any other candidate. But I'm sure none of this matters, cause he sure talks purty.

Americans have confused the Presidency with American Idol voting.
Get a grip. Obama has no experience and has shown many unworthy, Anti-American connections. McCain is a PATRIOT.
However, Mr. American Idol President might win with the help of uninformed folks, such as the ones who populate this website.

Ryan   November 4th, 2008 1:18 am ET

When have you ever heard anyone say that a candidate for president doesn't like the National Anthem? – I'll tell you when, when said candidate is black!! This is implied racism. What's the African American percentage in the National Football League? You know the NFL, the same NFL that has kept this old crank in any sort of relevance for the last twenty years?
Hey Hank – Are you ready to be labled a bigooooot?!!!

Beverly   November 4th, 2008 1:18 am ET

Last week Joe the Carpenter was introduced at one of Sarah Palin's Rally. He seems to be Latino. To her surprise, he said I quote, I love Sarah Palin and I want to have a baby with Sarah Palin right there on the stage. CNN did not show that clip anymore. Anyone out there who saw that introduction, please reply.

Scott   November 4th, 2008 1:17 am ET

One more Republican relying on lies, innuendo, and smear to attack Obama because he has nothing else. Go back to the South you redneck hick.

lubyloo   November 4th, 2008 1:17 am ET

Great leadership by Palin. I suppose she didn't hear this comment either, just like all the other offensive garbage said at their rallies.

Its funny that Ive put several comments on here and they were not approved. No bad language…no mean comments like the ones I have read…no racial slurs, no anti-american sentiments…and yet, because I am a conservative on a radical website, I cannot get posted… Now, that is fair and balanced….and that is just a glimpse into what the media is going to be doing to us for the next 4 years.

McCain's concession speech writer   November 4th, 2008 1:13 am ET

a redneck hick. And??

Jane   November 4th, 2008 1:12 am ET

Every single time I have heard Obama speak he has told one lie after another about Senator McCain and Governor Palin and so has Joe Biden. You people hear what you want to hear. When I look at some of the trash that you people support in the way of entertainment, it is a joke to see you writing about the shortcomings of Hank Williams, Jr. Everyone has their choice of what they are entertained by – at least I have not seen any laws against any type of music being offered in the USA. I don't care for about 90% of it myself, but I don't complain about what others enjoy unless it is about to burst my eardrums out in public. The thing for you sophomoric posters to do is get over yourselves already! NOW!

joan   November 4th, 2008 1:11 am ET

Palin released just a letter from "her" family doctor instead of detailed medical record. And the charge of her abuse of power was cleared by "her" people.

Josh   November 4th, 2008 1:11 am ET

Do you guys ever think that you take this a little too seriously? More often than not during the course of a campaign, candidates and their supporters say things to get the base or the crowds they are speaking to worked up. It's not a conservative or a liberal thing, it's a political thing. After the campaign is over it will all stop and whoever is elected will go to Washington and will have to guide this country through a mess and I seriously doubt that the words of Hank Williams Jr. or you average Hollywood actor will weigh heavily on their minds.

Terri D.   November 4th, 2008 1:10 am ET

Hank Williams Jr. is a washed up Old Bum, Take a look at the people at the mccain/palin rallies they are white bigots who cares what they say anybody with any intelligence can see they are spewing lies because thats all they have left they know they are going to lose.

Go Obama/Biden VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

CanUSayPresidentObama!   November 4th, 2008 1:10 am ET

Mike - Chicago   November 4th, 2008 1:09 am ET

Again, those putting McCain/Palin forward are dispicable liars, who seem to think if they tell the same lies over and over, the people in front of them will believe these tales. Hey Hank – next time you're at Nascar, I hope you PERSONALLY admonish all the rednecks who are drinking beer and eating nachos during the National Anthem, that is, if you can remove yourself under the weight of your own stupidity to even notice. And shame on Palin for allowing you get away with it. 1 racist redneck + 1 irrelevant governor = President Obama.

Zac   November 4th, 2008 1:08 am ET

It is should not be considered a slam against patriotism, simply because somebody does not put their hand over their heart during the National Anthem. We should be happy to see that somebody can safely remove god from state. It is about time that somebody separates the two. I thought we left "God save the Queen" back in England. Or is the Revolution a hoax, part of some eternal conspiracy?

Arizonan for Obama/Biden   November 4th, 2008 1:08 am ET

Rev Wright is a Traitor. God "d%$#" America.. those words came from Obamas good friend…and y'all want to talk about HWJ? The hate is coming from the democrats. HATE HATE HATE. Ive never seen such hate and filth in my life. Someone said today that they HATE Palin and wish she were dead. My God! This country needs help.

Watch this country die a slow miserable existence of hate and violence…we are seeing right now..today…what is to come…and its not a peaceful existence. Its a scary scary world.

Tony   November 4th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Oh my God! These Republicans will stop at nothing to say the most absurd things! It's like that woman telling McCain that Obama is a Muslim. We all just shake our head and take the mic away from these idiots that think they actually know the "truth." Their truth is based on lies and more lies. That is why they will not win.

True Proof   November 4th, 2008 12:59 am ET

Mr. Hank William, Jr. was not lying. Watch "Meet the Press" interview.
Sun, 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST,

General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain why he doesn't
follow protocol when the National Anthem is played. The General also stated to the Senator that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec.171…. During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. At the very least, 'Stand and Face It'

Senator Obama Live on Sunday states,
'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides, Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all it should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.' We should consider to reinvent our National Anthem as well as to redesign our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love…"

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard it right. This could possibly be our next President. I, for one, am speechless.

Dale Lindsborg,
Washington Post"

Which side do you think or want the President of the USA to take: American side or the "other sides"? Wake up America, before it is too late! We have only one more day to make the right choice.

Do you want Palin and 'Bocephus' to be rewarded for going around the country stirring up hatred and division, for trying to scare up votes by calling their opponent a terrorist? Then please, I'm begging you, stand up against this stuff once and for all and go cast your vote tomorrow for Barack Obama. These low-lifes were all born in a barn, and tomorrow we can send them back there once and for all.

God Bless America is a decent song.

Bombs bursting in air, rockets red glare, twilights last gleaming?
Not all that well written.

Just my opinion. Francis Scott Key was no lyrical genius.

The bottom line is, it's all about respect for your country.
I think Obama has respect for his country. So does McCain.
That doesn't mean I'm going to vote for Barack though.

I can only hope that an Obama win can put an end to the divisive tactics made so popular on the Right by Karl Rove. A GOP defeat might actually cause the party of Lincoln to re-think their "values" and come to the realization that demonizing those who disagree with your views does not and should not work.

Paul in Canada   November 4th, 2008 12:57 am ET

Hmmm. what a country musician thinks? Merle Haggard made more sense when he said a few months back: "Financially, we're broke. Nobody has any confidence in the man in charge. We're torturing people; we're not known to be that kind of people. People all over the world look up to us, and we're not setting a very good example."

Jake   November 4th, 2008 12:57 am ET

47 yo male for McCain, and others:

I don't think you read the entire article…

It states in the article what Obama's comments were regarding the National Anthem… there were none.

It also states that the circulated email was debunked a while back.

Numerous mainstream media outlets have deemed the Obama – Ayers, and Obama – Khalidi connections as irrelevant. The only people who insist on continuing to bring it up are the far right wing run outlets, as well as the numerous internet bloggers with something so incredibly important to say, that they have a readership of 15 folks, until they say something political. You really think these bloggers are propagating the rumors for the good of the nation, but the NY Times, and other outlets are basically saying it doesn't matter? No, the bloggers are saying it to get hits… to make money by saying something controversial.

It's the same thing that people like Ann Coulter have done to get famous, without having done anything interesting, or relevant, yet somehow they're famous, and make boatloads of cash.

If you are getting your information on how to vote via emails from people you know, and from Blogs… I know a certain bank somewhere in Africa that has a crapload of money sitting in an account for you. You just have to send them $8000 so that they can hire a lawyer to get it for you. I also hope that you choose NOT to vote on the 4th, because an uninformed vote, in my opinion, is worse than not voting at all.

Those of you who are doing your research, get out there, and vote for the cantidate who you think will be better for this country. Take your time in deciding, and if you haven't already, read both cantidates plans. Don't lose sight of your local elections either! Keep informed on the propositions on the ballot, and how they effect you! Just be informed, and vote, whether you disagree with what someone else voted or not.

It's a privledge in this country that we are able to vote… and if we don't do it, there is potential for that right to be taken away because of our apathy. Don't be apathetic… DO SOMETHING!

Mike   November 4th, 2008 12:56 am ET

OBAMA/BIDEN>OSAMA LADEN

I'm tired of divisive, intolerant, ignorant people. That's why I'm voting Obama. I'm tired of the politics of hate and division and fear and lies. Shut up "Bocephalus" Hank.

ibarr   November 4th, 2008 12:50 am ET

I thought conservatives are partial to the way things used to be? When I was in elementary school in the '50's I am pretty sure they taught us to put our hands over our hearts for the Pledge not the Anthem. Makes sense really if you are pledging allegiance. Of course back then we actually sang the Star Spangled Banner instead of listening to someone else sing it for us. Those of us who prefer singing the Anthem without covering our hearts with our hands are just expressing good old fashioned conservative values.

NM for Obama   November 4th, 2008 12:50 am ET

Your choice America.

Vote for the candidate who is focused on OUR future, your's, mine, and our country as it is viewed by the world,

or

vote for the candidate who has shown that his only hope for winning is to grasp at straws and cut down his opponent.

Which one gives you HOPE?

Michelle   November 4th, 2008 12:50 am ET

If it is not Palin spreading hate, it's Joe the Plumer,… if it's not Joe the Plumber spreding hate, then it's Hank Williams, Jr. There is always someone in the GOP to spread hate and division. It's these high school tactics that have led the GOP to dig their own grave in this election. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes and engage in some self-reflection. Lastly, sure am glad that Hank does not represent all country folk and NASCAR fans.

babaganoosh   November 4th, 2008 12:48 am ET

Who is this Hank Williams, Jr?

Joe   November 4th, 2008 12:48 am ET

What a stupid comment. This is the problem with the McCain Palin campaign. It has not attracted anybody who has had anything constructive to say about the issues facing most Americans today. Let's hope that tomorrow begins a change — not only electing a new President, but instead saying that elections will be about substance and issues (not the destructive politics we've seen out of the GOP this cycle). I guess if you have no ideas, people who do have ideas seem pretty threatening.

Allen   November 4th, 2008 12:48 am ET

The only people who would believe this moron are people who already belive it in the first place.

Mr. Williams is insignificant and irrelevant.

Lor   November 4th, 2008 12:48 am ET

For all the outrageously biased, racist, and nasty McCain/Palin supporters on this msg. board…you are all so great at slinging crap around regarding a subject (Obama) you haven't even bothered to research, so let me fill you in.
Obama is a US Citizen, born in Hawaii. He could not be a Senator, let alone President if he wasn't a US Citizen!!!! Please use your brains just a little bit!!!
The only requirements that must be met during the National Anthem are, standing at attention and removing your hat!!!!
If you ignorant people want to accuse Obama of being a terrorist, then you will also have to call John McCain a terrorist since he gave half a million dollars to Mr. Kalidi!! But perhaps you should look up the word "terrorist" in a dictionary first, since you're so confused about the meaning!!!
And finally, how dare you even suggest that you are Christians!!! It's people like you who give REAL CHRISTIANS a bad name!!
I, like the majority of voters, have chosen to support Barack Obama because he is absolutely NOTHING LIKE YOU REPUBLICANS!!!!
Obama/Biden 2008!!!

He will be the best thing to happen to this country since Kennedy. And the world will see that America is not a nation full of alcoholic white trailor trash rednecks like has been Hank Williams Jr. Bye Bye righties!

Sherri Cline   November 4th, 2008 12:47 am ET

I cannot believe that an individual who represents Monday Night Football would make a comment that has been debunked repeatedly as nothing more than a desperate lie from a desperate party. Perhaps it's time to let ABC/ESPN/Monday Night Football know what we think of Mr. Williams' blatant lie, which was told in the same breath as his mention of his sponsor. He is entitled to his opinion, but if he is going to us Monday Night Football to bolster his "credibility" we should be able to call them on his behavior.

babaganoosh   November 4th, 2008 12:47 am ET

John K   November 4th, 2008 12:46 am ET

Nick the Photographer   November 4th, 2008 12:46 am ET

Well I think I'll be boycotting Monday Night football now!

Kit   November 4th, 2008 12:42 am ET

Come on Folks. If we're calling for integrity and decency from the candidates, let's show it ourselves.

The only plus McCain had going into this campaign was experience, but the way he has handled his campaign – no focus, hateful attacks, lies etc. – I don't think he has learned much from that experience. except maybe those tactics which we are so correct to reject.

Obama is right. This election is about us! We can let candidates know that we expect honesty and a clear discussion of issues from them. Obama hasn't been perfect in this regard but he has been sooooo much better. More importantly, he has inspired and brought hope to so many people (evident from the tone of these comments). That's what leadership is.

David Keener   November 4th, 2008 12:42 am ET

I never thought in my lifetime USA would have a black candidate for president, how times have changed and we will have broken the race barrier. I only hope Obama can live up to the expectations put upon him. Good luck. God Bless.

Harry C   November 4th, 2008 12:42 am ET

Hank has lost it! But he fits right in with the two he is supporting. They are not any better. Hank you better put the cork back on that bottle. Remember what happened last time?

Eric from Ashburn, VA   November 4th, 2008 12:42 am ET

To Tom from Cleveland Ohio,

You said, "If the FBI would not hire him for an entry level position, should we hire him for President?"

Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty sure the FBI would love to employ a former President of the Harvard Law Review and a Constitutional Law Professor for an entry level position. Tomorrow, the American People are going to hire Obama to be in charge of the FBI.

Why can't we actually talk about any substantive issues here? This is what the Party of Lincoln has come to… attacking someone's patriotism over something that is obviously false. It is really sad. I can't wait to see President Obama with his hand over his heart at the Super Bowl. And I hope Hank Williams Jr. gets to sing it.

For the guy that said Senator Obama could not be hired by the FBI, I think he should explain what he meant. Obama is one of the smartest guy that will lead this country. Not people like McCain-Palin.

GE - MD   November 4th, 2008 12:36 am ET

Hank Williams is to be pitied more than censured. Lots of people believe the lies spread around out there when they confirm their own preconceived notions created from unconfirmed hysterical impressions. Do YOU, my reader, chase down the source and verify every negative comment about the candidates you are inclined to oppose?

By the way, have you read Bruce Springsteens' recent speech about Obama and our choices?

Ready for this to be over   November 4th, 2008 12:35 am ET

I would like to point out that lies happen in both parties and let us all remember that politics will be politics, is it wrong yes for both parties to endorse someone who is taking a comment or a situation out of context (just look at the TV ads), but it has happened in both parties so let us all keep that in mind and remember that issues/ policies matter more than rumors. Vote Tomorrow for the person you feel serves you best, please be educated!

Snaptaculous   November 4th, 2008 12:34 am ET

This doesn't surprise me.

If the GOP had their way every single American would believe that a vote for Obama is a vote for a baby kiling, commie, terrorist, lying, cheating, treacherous heathen whose sole purpose is to destroy this country.

Unfortunately that's who we elected in 2000 and 2004.

cta in new orleans   November 4th, 2008 12:33 am ET

Hopefully ABC/ESPN will do the right thing and spare us further exposure to this clown on Monday nights.

Hawk   November 4th, 2008 12:33 am ET

It was somewhat comforting to finally hear BHO telling voters not to get caught up in euphoria as current world conditions warrant that he won't be able to deliver on every campaign promise. Should he get elected, it'll be interesting to see which promises will be broken.

Adam   November 4th, 2008 12:33 am ET

Hank Williams Jr….the original Paris Hilton. A completely stoned bafoon making a buck of the family name. They have a name for folks like this….."this week on Jerry Springer"

Portlander   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

I would think that if somone make a racist comment, Mrs. Palin would correct them. No different if someone make a false, unbridging comment about another person, Mrs. Palin would make a comment to rectify it. It shows that her value are not in synch with my traditional family values. I would treat an adult no different than a child, if they are out of line. Mrs. Palin should do the same. Have some manners.

samantha   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Hey Hank:

You are not required to put your hand over your heart during the National Anthem. You are simply required to remove your hats and show respect. It's the Pledge of Allegiance (and I'll say it again, the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE) where you should place your hand over your heart. (and even then it's not the law).

Pete in Brockville   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Everytime I read that someone calls the USA the "greatest country on earth" I chuckle. As does everyone else in the world. The USA no longer has credibility in international circles. The debt will sink the economy in the near future (if the current credit crisis doesnt).

The USA is still the one of the most influential countries in the world (size of economy cannot be ignored) but long gone are the days when it could genuinely call itself the greatest nation on earth…not even close anymore.

If Palin ends up on the winning ticket…my god, did 8 yrs of dinglenuts not mean anything? Bush has the lowest IQ of any major leader in the history of the world…if Palin ever gets there…she could challenge him!

Cindy   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Obama's circle of influence is horrendous, and he will bring that into the White House. He even campaigned with the new pastor of Wright's church, and this new pastor also is a radical who constantly talks about 'thugs.' What in the world? America has lost its mind to vote for a man like Obama. He was mentored by communists, has been a member of the socialist party, and has worked closely with socialists and terrorists, as well as shady characters like Rezko.

Americans are fools if they do not see that a man who hangs out with fools is a fool. How can people vote for a man whom they think will save them from their economic woes, when that man cannot even take care of his own family? Obama has not helped his brother, his aunt, or his uncle, who was evicted because he could not pay his rent.

In addition, Obama only gave 5 percent of his income (if that) to charity last year, and that was up from 1.5 percent because he is running for president and needed to make that look better. McCain gives 25 percent of his income, and his wife gives huge amounts of time and momey to AIDS, children's health, orphans, and so forth.
The contrast could not be more stark. Which family shows by their track record that they care for the poor? Clearly, it is the McCains.

Reid   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Wow.

An ignorant comment from an ingnorant redneck. Too much weed and beer and not enough knowledge there Hank! Maybe instead of thinking of some 'cleaver' song that fires up the other beer belly freaks that have no education on any political issue whatsoever, you should sit down and read a newspaper and study the issues that matter. Don't sit here and slam a man that has served America in more ways than one.

Besides all you do is sing songs. Have you ever really helped anyone like Obama has on a personal level?

HAHAHAHAHA   November 4th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Hank Jr. is a washed out redneck; his singing is almost as bad as his judgment. Why this loser still has any following left at all is a mystery.

He sang the Natl. Anthem at the Mon. night football game in Nashville last week; it was right down there with some of the worst singing I've ever heard of the anthem.

bridgette   November 4th, 2008 12:31 am ET

May God protect us if that man rules this country tomorrow. We will be lost with Obama! No Osama for President! How ignorant are country has become, so sad. What would our forefathers say to see this come about.

Hank Vanmeesen   November 4th, 2008 12:29 am ET

It seems that Hank Williams makes stupid remarks both when he is drunk ,and when he is sober!

Gregg   November 4th, 2008 12:29 am ET

Clearly the majority of you are idiots…I would imagine these would be the posts here on CNN, the Clinton News Network…nothing but left winger liberal democrats….I hope you have all thought about the lack of experience you are voting for, and thought of how someone with his whole, oh wow…8 YEARS experience, will handle things such as foreign policy…very poorly I am sure…I guess all I can say is that I hope for the sake of our country the popular vote doesn't matter like in 2000 and if it does I really hope the Bradley effect comes into play.

Jacque of Louisiana   November 4th, 2008 12:29 am ET

Well, I hope CNN now sees why the ratings have gone so far down the past few years. I wondered who was watching all of this crap. Now I see……Look at the brainwashing the media has done. The sad thing is what will it cost us as a country? Who cares what HW says, it is still a free country , for a few more hours anyway. It is what Obama isn't saying that should be worrying you people!

TexicoFrom Mexico   November 4th, 2008 12:29 am ET

That guy is a washed up artist who does nothing but spew hate! His MNF song was worn out 15 years ago! When was the last time that white trash loser had a hit song? I think it was 1988 with Born to Boogie…with Van Halen. Sad…all that guy has ever done is sing about the south rising again..or If heaven was alot like dixie! What a racist!

Typical uninformed gun lovin', beer guzzlin', wife beatin', teeth-a-missin' redneck. Go marry your first cousin.

Old Dominionite   November 4th, 2008 12:28 am ET

I donated to the Obama Camp, volunteered dozens of hours of my free time, talked to every undecided friend I know, and just spent my whole night putting out door knockers for GOTV efforts in a rich arlington suburb (aka McCain/Palin country)

But coming home and seeing this reminds me of why it was all worth it. These people are going down tomorrow, and hard

OBAMA 44TH PRESIDENT OF U.S.   November 4th, 2008 12:28 am ET

THIS IS RACIST AND VERY UNPLEASING TO SEE. THIS CAMPAIGN IS SOWING A SEED OF HATE AND IT SHOWS THAT IF ANYONE IS MORE PATRIOTIC IT IS SENATOR OBAMA FOR PUTTING COUNTRY FIRST, AND NOT TURNING HIS SUPPORTERS AGAINST MCCAIN.

Desmond Sequeira   November 4th, 2008 12:28 am ET

And this Hank Williams guy is obviously a pitbull in the FAILIN -McBUSH smear & fear hate machine!!!!!!

Joman   November 4th, 2008 12:27 am ET

Nothing stokes the fires of hate like ignorance and lies.

For someone who vowed to run a clean campaign, McCain has divided us more than Rush Limbaugh ever could…

I Heard You Butcher The National Anthem Today! That Was Very Un Patriotic Of You!

Laura, Boston   November 4th, 2008 12:27 am ET

I am a John McCain supporter but I believe that Mr. Williams although entitled to his opinion was wrong in his comments.

Before you all go balistic think how many of you have come out and questioned John McCain and Sarah Palin? I have read so many hate filled blogs that my head is swimming. Sarah didn't release her medical records because the baby's not hers. John McCain is a traitor. These are both false stories and I will be glad when this is over tomorrow.

If Obama wins I hope this country will heal and if McCain wins I hope the same thing! Is anybody else with me? It is time to end the hate!

not fooled   November 4th, 2008 12:26 am ET

ENOUGH WITH THE LIES

DO THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO SHAME? NO CHRISTIAN WOULD UTTER SUCH THINGS ABOUT A DECENT HUMAN BEING, BUT ONCE AGAIN THE MCCAIN CAMPS MANTRA RINGS TRUE:

HEAR NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL, UNLESS SOMEHOW ITS ABOUT THEM.

PATHETIC

Greg Hodges   November 4th, 2008 12:26 am ET

I don`t even know why I`m bothering to respond to this bozo; except that this is so typical of the mentality of rednecks all over the U.S.. Do NOT bother them with the facts; once their puny little minds are already made up. It never ceases to amaze me how these backwood zealots are more concerned about symbolism then substance. While time and time again these myths appear about Barack Obama; and time and time again they are proven to be false and misleading; the good olde boys keep treating them as gospel truth. Pathetic!!

Darrel from Denver   November 4th, 2008 12:05 am ET

Unbelievable that someone could be so gullible as to state something like that about a candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

It goes to show you how Republicans think and act, apparently.

Sad.

Doug, Pittsburgh, PA   November 4th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Typical GOP lies and misinformation from a drunken redneck.

Alex   November 4th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Just when I thought the GOP couldn't be sunk any lower. You guys are dishonoring yourself and everyone who came before you.

Joe   November 4th, 2008 12:03 am ET

The next comment would have been that senator Obama is not from this planet. See I am a registered Republican voting for Obama and changing my party affiliation. How can I trust a party that fabricates such misconceptions about anyone. What made me change? Dirty tricks and deception. Mac is not back!

Adam in NC   November 4th, 2008 12:03 am ET

gaj   November 3rd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

i keep on asking my friends "who actually does Mrs Palin inspire?" , i keep asking them this because i think that the republican party can produce a more formidable and intelligent female candidate to champion their course on the national stage.Palin point blank has an IQ deficit for someone seeking political relevance on the national level, look at the interview with katie couric, the vp debate and lately how she fell for prankers on phone; how could Palin think that Sarkozy would discuss Carla Bruni's prowess in bed with her in their first ever conversation! i think palin went this far in politics thanks to her looks! America deserves better.

Brian   November 3rd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

Obama-Biden 2008 and 2012   November 3rd, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Hank Williams has lied and everyone know it. I rebuke his lie and declare that they will NOT work nor prevail against Sen. Obama !

No weapon forged against you [ Sen. Barack Obama ] will prevail, and you [ Sen. Barack Obama ] will refute every tongue that accuses you [ Mrs. Michelle Obama and Sen. Barack Obama ] . This is the heritage of the servants [ Sen. Barack Obama ] of the LORD, and this is their [ Sen. Barack Obama ] vindication from me," declares the LORD. – Isaiah 54:17

It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president in 2008 and 2012 !

Amen

Conscientious Christian   November 3rd, 2008 11:45 pm ET

As a Christian, I do not sing the national anthem or put my hand over my heart when it is played. Unfortunately my savior doesn't allow me to partake in or glorify violence because otherwise, there are some people to whom I would love to show some violence.

America and Rome are the only two empires to have their citizens put their hands over their hearts for the national anthem.

frankie   November 3rd, 2008 11:44 pm ET

After 40 years of Conservative rule, we need change!!! I see what kind of people McCain/Palin attract and they scare me. It's a shame they still blame Democrats for the way things are going.Well take a guess, it has been the Republicans who has been in charge all along. The whole world is watching this election closely. If McCain wins, I only fear for the worse. I read a letter to Santa, from a girl who pleas Santa, Please let a Democrat win tomorrow.

Sad, just sad. Go away Hank. We sang the Star Spangled Banner this morning in Jax at the rally and it was beautiful!

kristinedaae   November 3rd, 2008 11:41 pm ET

Reading all of these comments says to me that after tomorrow we will be a country divided. All of the hate and anger coming from both sides is frightening. It's sad to see that the greatest country in the world has come to this. :(

SC BLUE   November 3rd, 2008 11:40 pm ET

That's so funny, because this morning in Jacksonville, FL, we sang one of the most beautiful versions of the Star Spangled Banner and we said the Pledge of Allegiance with enthisiasm as we awaited the next President of the United States, Barack Obama. I'm so sorry Hank wasn't there to be a part of such a wonderful event.

Fred Reyes   November 3rd, 2008 11:37 pm ET

Hank Williams how did you know that the great Senator Obama does not like the national anthem? Did he tell you? Do you have evidence? If you don't have then put up or shot up!!!! That's what you get in palling with Palin.

Uncle Fester   November 3rd, 2008 11:30 pm ET

Katran Miller   November 3rd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Hank, if you're so worried about Obama's patriotism based on a debunked email smear, why aren't you giving John McCain a hard time for never wearing a flag lapel pin, which you can see any day or night on the news?

Or… just MAYBE… you could instead judge these men by what they've done and where they stand on issues facing this country of ours.

Oregonian for Obama/Biden   November 3rd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

what's with all this obama will make history tomorrow? is that what its all about, just history? how about the future now…thats what this is all about. not the past, but the future. mccain may not live long, but at least he knows how to live for his country and do what's right with his own personal experiences and situations. obamas a great guy, but this country is going to hell and we need some experience to take over for a few years. somebody that supports this country for all it is worth too…clearly mccain is that person based on his past and present remarks and situations.

HillarySupportersForObamaInCT   November 3rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Um, I may be wrong, but I believe tradition and etiquette say you don't have to have your hand over your heart during the National Anthem; the Pledge, yes, but not the anthem. And to me, a person doesn't show their patriotism by putting their hand over their heart during a song; it's what they do to advance this country and help their fellow human being instead of trying to drag it into the dark ages. Vote Obama-Biden tomorrow!

Sue/PA   November 3rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

cowboyneok   November 3rd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

If that kind of LIE had been said about John McCain or Sarah Palin, Obama would have stopped him and said, "No, now… come on! We don't need that kind of stuff. We just need everyone to VOTE!" Obama won't even let his crowd "boo" and "hiss" at the dark side. He ALWAYS is a true gentleman. Palin and McThuselah both let their crowds and surrogates get out of hand and shout violent threats and lies! Its disgusting. This nation is in enough trouble without McCain and Palin sewing more seeds of division. Their campaign can't end soon enough so our country can start digging out of the mess their beloved Republican Party has caused our nation.

Does America have only one legitimate type of music now? My God! What have we become if Hank Williams Jr is the sole representative of what we call music? Worse yet, what have we become if we actually listen to his misinformed opinion about who is a patriot and who is not? I have to wonder why Palin stood by and let him spew that crap out of his mouth. Is the strangler fig of John McCain's presidential campaign deaf? Why didn't she ask him to stop? All these people provide is form, not substance.

nick romer   November 3rd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Who would really care what a washed up old country redneck singer thinks about Barrock. I hope he retires to his home like he should have done many many years ago. I hope his party (extreme right) enjoys his new songs about McCain and Sara Palin. Maybe he and Toby Kieth can do a duet.

There's no lies here. Obama said he wants to change the National Anthem. BS! And he said he intends to change the American Flag because it too is offensive. Also, I see that to a democrat if you are not on their side and basically you are a White Republican and you speak up and voice your opinion and refuse to have Obama be the leader of our country, then you are a "Redneck." I must be a big friggin "Redneck" then. But you know what, I'd rather be a "Redneck" then the alternative.

If you can't win on the issues, lie. That seems to be the McCain-Palin way these days–make things up and try to scare people into voting for you. Luckily, if the polling can be believed, the American people aren't falling for it. We'll see for sure tomorrow.

Michael P. Cimini   November 3rd, 2008 10:36 pm ET

If you needed more proof that the Republicans rely upon proxies to do their dirty work, here it is. This just goes to show that the Republican playbook is the size of a matchbook. These folks offer nothing but banalities, lies, and fearmongering, and sadly they are too cowardly to even slander their opponents openly. Instead, they drop semi-formed ideas into the discourse. It's just sad.

Hank Williams, Junior, needs to lay off the drugs. How typical for the Republican family values crowd to spotlight that joke of a song he wrote for Palin – McLame by writing over the "pro-family" lyrics:

"So don't ask me Hank
why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs you wrote?
Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
It's a family tradition! "

Real nice values, Republiscum.

"She's an illegal immigrant who has already been deported and now she's living off taxpayer money in Public Housing.

I am Mexican—but I am a legal immigrant–but I can't get Public Housing.

What's going on here. This is why Latinos hate blacks."

There are more illegal Hispanics (Mexicans) or (OTM Other than Mexicans) inside the United States. So do me a favor please shut up. You should not want public housing you should want a job w/ an apartment or house of your own.

I don't have problems with latinos! However, ignorants ones I do! If you don't like it here. Tear up your natualization forms and move out!

That wouldn't have been said at an Obama rally. The McCain rallies are now sideshows. He needs to speak to them about taking the HIGH ROAD.

You know, I never put my hand over my heart when the national anthem is played, either. When did that become a requirement? I do put it over my heart for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Hank WHO??

Seriously, this is exactly the reason I, a person who's always voted Republican, am considering switching to the Democrat side this year. While other news networks have decried the dirty tricks and hatred of the left, I've seen enough evil and lies coming from conservatives to prove there's enough dirt to go around.

In fact, almost all of the negative I've seen thrown around is towards Obama. From his "Muslim roots" to his "anti-American" ways, most people bite the dirty e-mail gossip and believe it as truth. Then perpetuate the lies by spreading them around.

Hank Williams Jr. is a washed up country singer who couldn't live up to his father's legacy. And that anyone attending that rally didn't clarify their stand, but allowed a lie to be spoken is just as bad as he is for telling the lie.

This is one conservative female former Republican who will vote Obama tomorrow morning.

PD   November 3rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hank Williams, Jr. has just shown himself to be an ignorant, holier-than-thou, small-minded liar. Hope his career tanks… what's left of it.

Katie   November 3rd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

what does placing your hand on your heart during a song and looking pious got to do with real patriotism. John MCcain I am sure does it very well. But look what he did just to get elected as president. He chose the most incompetent, ignorant and dangerous VP in history. At his age she is very likely to hold the commander in chief's position if he gets elected. If this happens this country is for sure on its way to great decline. Ask your self how patriotic is that?

Vet4McCain   November 3rd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Listen people: If Obama did love the country that his wife didn't until recently. Why does he want to "Fundamentally" change it?
Merriam Webster's "Fundamental"

1 a: serving as an original or generating source. b: serving as a basis supporting existence or determining essential structure or function : basic
2 a: of or relating to essential structure, function, or facts : radical ; also : of or dealing with general principles rather than practical application b: adhering to fundamentalism

Toby Keith supports Barack Obama and Democratic Party! I'll listen to Toby any day of the week before Hank Jr.

Hank is an ignorant as they get with the same GWB thought, "you're either for us or against us attitude." Keep the McCains, Palins and Bushes.

Wake up people   November 3rd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Well I guess people in the military must not like the song either because whenthe national anthem place inside they stand at attention or when outdoors they salute. Everyone knows the only requirement for the national anthem is to take off you hat. Placing your hand over your heart is for the Pledge of Alligiance.

I really dont care about the songs, who cares, the real issue is that Obama is not a US Citizen, and why are we not delaying the elections to find out why this issue is still not resolved

Ricardo   November 3rd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

to "Why Obama has lost Already" Why would you secretly support your own candidate if you truly believed in his ability – you wouldn't hurt my feelings if you told me you supported McCain, I might question your judgment though! Common, you know all the poll results are not favoring Obama just because a bunch of McCain supporters want to keep the peace – after all, aren't you all a bunch of hawks!

Sowega Independent   November 3rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Cheryle C. Teague   November 3rd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Reference Sen. Obama's statements concerning our Nat'l anthem. CNN, you need to read the transcript from, Meet the Press, 07 Sept. 2008. Gen Mc Gin asks Sen. Obama about our Nat'l anthem and Sen. Obama's response was that "it sounded warlike." He also states why he does not place his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. All anyone needs to do is read the Meet the Press transcript. Cheryle C. Teague

30-m-PA-voted McCain   November 3rd, 2008 9:59 pm ET

It's true. I clearly remember the picture of Obama standing on stage with Clinton and Richardson in Iowa and he was the only one not putting his hand over his heart. Think about it. You're on stage in front of hundreds perhaps thousands of people. You've got photographers from around the world and tv cameras. You are essentially being viewed by the entire world. You're standing their and looking at everyone putting their hands over their heart, yet you don't and you're running for president of the United States of America. Something is really wrong with that picture. Can someone say Bill Ayers?!

barry   November 3rd, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Hank is a bigger jerk-off than McCain and Palin put together…don't quit your day job, fool

Davis in NC   November 3rd, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I just spit up a little into my mouth. I'm sure many Americans would not care much for the national anthem if it had always be rendered as horrendously as I saw it delivered today by Hank Williams Jr. at one of the Palin rallies. I could've done a better job humming the song. The most ironic aspect of the performance was that while it was supposed to be entertainment, it quickly became acoustic torture. He presents a very representative picture of the "low information" voters Chris Matthews referenced last week that are genuinely uninterested in seeking official information and more than content to remain ignorant on the candidates' records and the issues at hand.

Bill   November 3rd, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I hope everyone remembers Palin's willful deafness during this election season.
Obama is a decent hard working man and does not deserve to be called a terrorist or a socialist.
Hopefully after tomorrow Palin will go back to Alaska and take all of her hateful followers with her,

Sick of CNN   November 3rd, 2008 9:58 pm ET

It is always interesting to me how shamelessly biased CNN is. They always have a nice slant on reporting the news. Uh.. where's ACORN coverage… no ballot stuffing to cover? Boy they sure buried that story in a hurry. The 2007 photograph of Obama was an accurate depiction of him standing there, hands by his side, as the national anthem was played. Disgraceful! But of course CNN isn't going to say that. Much like their coverage of Hezbollah missiles flying down on Israel…. nope they're not going to mention that either. Oh but they'll report about the Israeli attacks on Beirut. "The most trusted name in news…" . yeah right. The most biased name in news reporting is a more accurate description.

Linda32   November 3rd, 2008 9:58 pm ET

hank Williams, Jr is crazy. You would think that the McCain/Palin campaign would want to stay away from crazies like this but they love it. go figure and they claim to be fighting for the nation? whatever

Obama did…at all three.

John McCain, why do you hate your country so?

You must be kidding! I watched the live rally when he began to sing…and all I can do is wonder if he actually gets paid for what he does. What in the world makes these people think they have more respect for America than Sen. Obama? Do they just accept anything the GOP tells them? I guess so. Hank Williams Jr.? Good grief!

Why Obama Has Lost Already.   November 3rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Millions of Americans, like me, are telling pollsters as well as family and friends that they are voting for Obama. Why? Just to keep the peace.

But in the privacy of the voting booth, we are pulling the lever for McCain/Palin and primarily Sarah Palin who we expect to be Pres. in 2012.

Republican for Obama   November 3rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

I have voted Republican in every presidential election but I won’t be this time. I cannot vote for McCain because he supports amnesty for illegal immigrants and he cheated on his first wife. He was cheating on his first wife while he was married and had a child at home. This shows a lack of morals and family values. The most important role in a mans life is being a good father and he failed!!!! I realize Cindy was much younger, beautiful, and rich but McCain was selfish. He put himself ahead of his wife and child. McCain FIRST and FAMILY SECOND!!!! McCain was also a central figure in the savings and loan scandal that cost taxpayers billion of dollars. As far as I am concerned, McCain is just another slimy politician!!!!!!! I will be voting for a Third Party candidate.

Anonymous   November 3rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Hank who?

Nick   November 3rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

This is getting ridiculous and offensive. My family immigrated to the United States in 1929 to escape Fascist italy. My grandmother used to tell me stories about Mussolini in the 1920's and how he won the people over. This is starting to sound eerily like that.

If McCain wins, America has adopted Fascism and I don't belong here. My family has fought fascism for decades, we will continue to do so.
