Former Virginia Gov. and Senate candidate Mark Warner greets an elderly voter at a polling place in Alexandria, VA Tuesday.

(CNN) - In response to a complaint to the CNN Voter Hotline, the Virginia Board of Elections is directing polling stations to assist elderly and disabled voters, according to the board's Mike Litterst. He said Virginia Secretary of State Nancy Rodriguez has sent an email to state registrars that the stations are obligated to assist those individuals.

Chesapeake is reporting few technical problems in any of its 53 voting sites, a Chesapeake City support technician told CNN. He said the voting machines are user friendly, even for the elderly and disabled, and poll workers are certified to adjust any machine to assist voters.

The state election board spokesman said in the event the machines are down, paper ballots would be offered. Litterst could not confirm the caller's claims that there was no one to help the elderly and disabled but said measures have been taken to ensure that those voters are being treated fairly.

I'm a combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps. I went to vote this morning, only to find out that I wasn't registered. When I served overseas I sent in a registration and an absentee ballot in past elections, apparently nothing was received and my vote didn't count then and makes it not able to count today. So where did my registration and vote go in the past? Just would like to say no matter who you vote for, God Bless America and stand up for what you believe in!

The other blogs were closed but I just had to make this clear, on the blank panther reports in Philly that is making national news, there were 2 AA guys standing outside with a black panther sign on their clothing, and had clubs, and the Republican pole watcher stated they were intimidating people, the police were called to the scene and the 2 AA guys and fox news were escorted from the polling area. stop putting every AA in the same category, all races have nut jobs.
This has nothing to do with Obama.

Gene-

The Republican party is based on the things that I agree with, and Christian and moral values are those that I agree with the most.
Obama, as a "Christian" listened for a period of time longer than my life span to the preachings of Jeremiah Wright. He spent twenty years listening to anti-American speeches and befriending those who were accused of terrorist acts. These are supposed Christian values? I think not.
John McCain was a POW. He spent years being tortured, yet would not leave his imprisonment until those who had been held longer had been released. He adopted a child from Bangladesh who had a cleft palate, paid for her surgery, and gave her a better life. These are not moral values?
Tell me, Gene, what precisely do you consider moral if not those things?

The Race card will not work in this election. Bill and Hillary Clinton
did not play the race card and have helped Obama an awful lot , and for which Obama should be grateful (not sure though, but hope he will be). Bill Clinton is still the best campaigner and it will probably
he the best endoresement got and Barack Obama for better or worse will be our next President . Not sure if Obama offers Hillary
a cabinet post or a Justice position?

Not only are some of the people who are posting on this site racist, but they seem to be prejudiced against elderly and disabled people. I am so ashamed that the moral fiber of our country has been diminished to the point that we all have to be young, white and physicially and emotionally perfect in order to be deemed 'upstanding' citizens who are worthy of casting a vote. Shame on the shallow representatives of our country who epitomize this mentality. I only hope that a positive light of hope, acceptance and unity will be cast on our great country in the next 24 hours.

To Concerned:

Sorry to say this.. But Obama is MUCH stronger on Christian values than McCain.. and as far as Moral Behavior.. Obama is much stronger than McCain too.

Obama is a family man who doesn't cheat on his wife... and McCain is running the sleeziest campaign ever... Terrorist claiming Robo calls... everything is about how bad Obama is instead of what he can do for the country.

So if anything.. you're voting for the guy who's LEAST displaying your "christian values"

It's time we start behaving like we mean it. Let the right yell and scream at clouds. Let them call names. They won't hurt us. Believe in the people and their common sense.
Ignore the evil rants and accept any who want to join the struggle to take our country back in the direction our fathers intended.

Why is it considered racist to be a Republican right now?
I'm not voting for McCain because he's white, i'm voting for him because we have similar values.
His skin color is not the issue I'm concerned with when casting my ballot. Obama may be black, but that doesn't mean that I'm racist for voting for "the white guy". Had Hilary Clinton been the Dem's nominee, I would still vote McCain.
People are "racist" because they don't vote Obama, yet the Black Panthers are a justifiable group of what, exactly? Night sticks and threats sound like racism to me, and the targets seem to be white republicans.

We have got to get a better system for voting! Perioed! It is amazing that we live in the country that is pretty much th eleader of the free world and we cannot get our voting system to work fairly, properly and adequately. I am so disappointed to see what is going on in our country in 2008 almost 2009 with the voting process. For God's sake, someone do somehting and why must we vote in one day, why can't we make a three day affair? why can't we make it easier and a bit more pleasant? I voted early this morning in my small town and didn't have to wait at all. I loved it! I hope that tonight when Seantor Obama wins the eloection, he'll propose something about our voting system that could work better for all of us!

I am glad that the elderly are being treated right at the polls. I worried when I heard that there were issues with the way the elderly were treated in Florida during the first few days of early voting.

I went to vote this morning at 11am and there wasn't a line, everyone was very nice, and I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. It was a pleasant surpise, considering I waited over 2 hours in 2006.

Spider   November 4th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

We've all heard the old saw:

"If you don't bother to get out and vote, you can't complain about our government."

Anyone else find that pretty stupid?

Look at it in real life.
If my candidate wins the election I will never complain about what he does. There are a bunch of Republicans that still think G.W. Bush was a good President.
If my candidate loses the election I will complain about everything the President does.
If I don't vote, then I probably didn't care. Why would I complain anyway? Unless I'm a complainer, regardless.

I did vote. And I will be complaining if Barack Obama is elected. I will be reminding people everyday of all the promises The One made in order to get elected. I will point out how unsuccessful he is in fulfilling those promises. When, in four years, at the end of his term, he has failed terribly and no one wants to admit they voted for him, I will point out that, if you're Black, there's a 93% chance that you did.

Rob   November 4th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

I'm sure it's just for those who are going to vote for Obama. The state already wants to not include ballots of soldiers. Hmm, maybe that can take a hint from Philly, and have some Black Panthers come in and block polling places.

Like everything else the libs get their hands on, America will be ruined if they win.

Everybody always blames the republicans for voter fraud, but what about the "Black Panthers" guarding the entrance of the voting places in Philly with night sticks and intimdating everyone.

Oh, and in Virginia, they seem to have LOST all of their votes cast by our military, who at last note were 68% McCain.

One polling place in Pittsburg already had votes on it when the voting started.

A lot of democratic cheating going on here.

I live in NC & use a wheelchair & didn't have any trouble voting this morning. I did notice, however, that only 1 voting station was lowered so that it could be accessed from a seated position. Luckily there was not a long line where I was voting, so I was able roll right up to it. I also noticed that there was a place where you could drive up to the curb and push a button & someone would bring your ballot right out to your car if you have a disability. I personally don't like any special treatment like that just because I have a disability (I'm young & very mobile despite using a chair), but I suppose it would be nice for those who are elderly or who have a more difficult time getting out of the car or waiting in lines.

Judith A Carlson   November 4th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Too bad it's too late for this historic election, but we need more education for new citizens. At my polling place, there are many new citizens, mostly from Eastern Europe. There are many spoiled ballots because many of these new voters tried to vote for Obama for president but Palin for vice-president or, conversely, they liked McCain but wanted Biden for vice-president. The election judges had to explain, ad nauseum, that the presidential candidates and their running mates are a package deal and that they can't be split. I wonder how much this is occurring throughout the country.

Kelly (Colorado Springs)   November 4th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I went to vote in Norfolk, VA at 6 AM, on crutches with a badly strained LCL and no pain killers, since I was driving myself. Everybody was very confused with what to do with me for a while. I ended up standing out in the rain that way (and boy are umbrellas hard to hold on crutches) for about 45 min. Finally, someone found the gentleman in charge of the polling place, and he ushered me up to the front of the line (which as thankfully indoors). All of the poll workers were great, offering me chairs and holding my stuff so I could negotiate the crutches and the touch screen. I'm happy for my fellow VA voters that they have cleared things up, so those is my situation, and the many that I am sure have bigger troubles getting around today, can both vote and do what they must for my health. My knee is extra sore now, but it's worth it. As I told one of the super-kind poll-workers, a whole lot of people worked lond and hard and even put their lives on the line so that I could have the right to vote, so I wasn't about to whine about a knee injury, I was just happy to exercise my right :)
PS: Thanks to the poll workers at the ODU/Larchmont precinct in Norfolk ! (And of course to poll workers everywhere, without you we would be lost today)

Just to let you folks around the country that South Florida is having problems already with the new voting machines and voters who have been voting in their precincts have been told today that their precincts have been changed after they have waited several hours in line. Most of these have been in black areas of town .Sounds like voter suppression again to me. This folks had friends or took public transportation to get to the site....Machines not accepting their ballots because certain a amendment was on the ballot twice. One polling location told a local new station that if "someone was concerned that their voted would not be counted because a the scanner went down that they, "the election clerk would call them and that they could return back to the location to see their ballot being scanned this evening". I thought that voting was private? How are they going to call a voter and ask them to watch their ballot be counted? Since when is your ballot attached to your name?

maryo   November 4th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

I have called st.louis board of ellections for help as AM TRYING TO FIGURE out how to vote today. my absentee ballot did not show up. i have called for help to get there, but no one picks up the phone. i use a wheelchair and can't make the distance.
obAma money is paying for taxi cabs to get to the polls, but they are not accessable. i used to work elections, so they know i am republican. no ballot and no way to get to polls.but, i will figure something out. i have voted each ellection since i was 18. no time to stp now. this stinks.

donna smith   November 4th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

this should not even be a discussion., Let the old people fo to the front of the line.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maria from PA   November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

In response to Stu Padaso Do we really want the elderly and disabled voting?

Yes, WE DO, otherwise McCain could not cast a ballot

My sister and son both have a disability and both went out and voted today. Being elderly and or having a disability has nothing to do with their ability to rationize that McCain/Palin would be disaster for this country. They voted for someone who can bring hope someone who is looking to reunite this country after 8 years of fear and smear from the GOP

Elizabeth   November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I'm in Richmond , Virginia, and though I did have a very long wait the elderly and disabled I saw were treated very well. Poll workers came out regularly to announce that anybody over 65, disabled or pregnant could come wait in the cafeteria, where they could sit down. They also walked around offering folding chairs to others waiting in line and helped older people negotiate the stairs in front of the (older, not up to ADA code) school.

Dawn   November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

My husband and I voted this morning and their was an elderly couple in front of us, she waited until she was close to the door and asked us if it was alright to retrieved her husband in a wheel chair. It is hard for them to vote and they even brought the touchscreen down to him.

There was not a long line when we got there, but when we left there was....

So I voted for Obama/.Biden.

Elderly in Virginia   November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I'm an elderly voter in Virginia, and the poll workers were so sweet and helpful to me. They even helped me decide on who to vote for. I was pretty sure that I was going to vote McCain, but the sweet young man at the polls convinced me to select the Obama fellow. He felt so strongly, I guess he knew what he was talking about.

Carolyn   November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Stu Padaso...every vote counts, even the elderly and disabled. See how you would feel if YOU could not vote because you're old and disabled.

Jennifer Shiffman   November 4th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

This morning at my voting location in Arlington, VA... there was a few elderly voters pulled out of the line and helped out by election officials to chairs in the actual room where the voting machines are. Also, they were asked if they needed help actually voting. The eldery are actually getting some help in VA.

layla   November 4th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I was thinking about that in Arlington Virginia, because of the wait..the elderly and the disabled should be well treated...also people that suffers from low blood pressure..if the wait is long they can faint....

tulsa   November 4th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

GARY,
Lighten up. The day is upon us. Vote your concience, watch the returns and then remember we are all Americans.
It seems to me that it was people like you who are fond of saying that
"You have to stand behind the president, like him or not."
The shoe is on the other foot now, so if you really meant that, then follow your own advice.
We will need the unity of our nation to get out of this mess. To be divisive after the election would truly be unAmerican.

virginia   November 4th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Even in my little precinct in small-town Virginia, there was a station set up for those with special needs – it amounted to at least 10% of the available stations. While the rest of us used the 'scan-tron' method of filling in the bubbles, the one station was set up for touch-screen voting to make the process as simple as possible.

thats great!!

Obama-rocks   November 4th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

The elderly should be voting for Obama, that way, like the rest of us they won't have to worry about paying their mortgage or any other bills. The government will take care of your every need when Obama is elected. I can't wait to stand in line for my Government cheese. All Hail OBAMA!!

Nick in OK   November 4th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I'm in a wheelchair and voted this morning after waiting in line just like everyone else for a very short 1.25 hours.

GINA, OHIO   November 4th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

COME ON YOU SWEET ELDERLY PEOPLE BARACK THE VOTE!!!

Jonathan   November 4th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

In Indiana elderly and disabled folks get to go to the front of the line.

E. Taylor   November 4th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

I've wondered how my mother-in-law, whom suffers with arthritic knees, is supposed to stand in line for hours in the rain today.

However, voting at her station in Richmond, she was in and out within a half an hour.

Tiffany   November 4th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Norfolk polling station at Bolling has a line out the door. Some have been waiting for hours.

DJ   November 4th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

My concern was for those waiting in long lines with no priority for elderly and/or disabled. I'm healthy and had no problem standing in line for an hour and a half but felt for the gentleman in front of me who was having difficulty standing with only his cane for support and the gentleman farther up with a back brace.

Dee   November 4th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Why is this even an issue? did they NOT THINK that the disabled/elderly did not vote? They should have had accomodations in place LONG before this day happened...

What a mess?

Stu Padaso   November 4th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Do we really want the elderly and disabled voting?

voter voice   November 4th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

they do, wheelchair accessible booths in most places.

I'm just concerned that the "help" they get will be "just check THIS box"...
Why else would political party hacks be wandering the halls of Alzheimer wards with absentee ballots?

P. Fox   November 4th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

At 6:30 AM, in a pouring rain, election officials in Hampton, VA were walking up and down a long line of voters asking if there were any elderly and handicapped voters needing help. Those who did were sent to the front of the line. Nice to see.

Laura   November 4th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

I hope this includes access to Spanish-language ballots and instruction as well – many registered, legal, first-time voters could use the help!

george from alaska   November 4th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

John & Sarah repent of your evil greedy republican ways and accept the Savior. Please turn out the lights...your party is over!

Boye   November 4th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Seniors and the disabled get priority seating in public transportation, how come they don't have a booth that gives priority to seniors/disabled?

Anonymous   November 4th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Good !! Now get ALL the votes counted correctly. Thanks.

Voter   November 4th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I still think a sanity or IQ test for everyone should be a requirement.

And an option for those in hospitals (car accidents, pregnancy etc.)

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 4th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

That's great to know that the elderly and the disable are not being disenfranchised!

Let's get out and VOTE people!

PLEASE AMERICA LET'S REJECT THE VILE POLITICS OF THE REPUBLICANS!

HOPE TRUMPS FEAR & HATE!

GARY   November 4th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

OBAMA BOUGHT THIS RACE THROUGH THE MEDIA,DNC ETC. JUST REMEMEMBER.WHAT GLITTERS IS NOT ALWAYS GOLD. ALSO. WHAT YOU DONT KNOW WONT HURT YOU. OBAMA LIVES BY THIS SAYING. MCCAIN IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN KEEP OR COUNTRY SAFE.IF OBAMA GETS ELECTED IT WILL BE THE WORST DISASTER FOR AMERICA.
