(CNN) - The first exit polls out Tuesday reflect what voters have said all along: The economy is by far the top issue on their minds.

Sixty-two percent of voters said the economy was the most important issue. Iraq was the most important for 10 percent, and terrorism and health care were each the top issue for 9 percent of voters.

The economy has dominated the last leg of the campaign trail as Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain have tried to convince voters that they are the best candidate to handle the financial crisis.

We are minutes from begining to restore our nation's credibility in the world, as all countries expect, like we are, to aclaim Barack Obama as our commander in chief. His gifted mind , a national treasure, may serve us well in guiding us out of the economic mess in which this irresponsible administration has taken our nation.

I am a Canadian and I wish I could have voted for OBAMA. I hope he wins, he is a better candidate.

David   November 4th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Scary!

Be afraid! Be VERY VERY AFRAID!

Shanna   November 4th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

I am ready for this to be over with. I wish we could find out right now. I will not be able to sleep tonight.

Ernie Cole   November 4th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

If Obama and the Dem-wits are elected, then America you deserve everything that happens to you in the next four years !!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited about the redistrubtion of wealth since I'm not working

Ruben   November 4th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

The whole world needs Obama to be America's next President. Because America is the world's leader, God bless us all if he loses.

George Sutherland   November 4th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Jorge and Anonymous - I admire your post-partisan, no-more-politics-as-usual spirit of unity.

Anonymous   November 4th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

McCain/Palin 08!!

If Obama gets in, we can all kiss our jobs goodbye! Spreading the wealth isn't the answer. it'll only create more problems. If any of you own a small business, you may as well close up shop if he gets in! Personally, I don't want to see that happen to my family. MCCAIN/PALIN!!

peter dunn   November 4th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

How odd to report on which issue the exiting voters thought were most important but not who they voted for?

T Kauhi   November 4th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

It's been a long time coming. Can't believe the day is finally here. Being in Hawaii, we'll probably know the outcome of the election long before our polls are closed, but I am confident in saying that we'll be partying tonight to celebrate the landslide victory of President Obama! Congratulations from your extended ohana here in Hawaii...aloha

sheretta   November 4th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Jorge I agree with you 100% NO MORE BUSCH!! It has been 8 years of hell.

The economy is the most important concern right now. People are loosing their homes, jpbs.etc... We need change whether its going to be Obama or McCain. The thing is whomever wins tonight I hope they can live up to what they have preached on their campaign trails.

You should all be lucky live you live in this great country, where we have freedom of speech. Thankfully I and the majority of americans are smart enough to vote McCain so we can keep those freedoms.

The whole world is praying for Obama. Hopefully He'll make it.

Akanni   November 4th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Come on guys those exit polls mean nothing. The media has been in the tank for Obama since the beginning of this election, one more day will not hurt. I voted for McCain/Palin and I am a Democrat.
McCain does not need a lifeline just a fair shake.

greggfoto   November 4th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I guess it takes you awhile to understand that it's the economy when you have seven houses....

Joe   November 4th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

AJ   November 4th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

and go after the incompetent Palin for the joke she was?

Jon in Indiana   November 4th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

""Sixty-two percent of voters said the economy was the most important issue."

Exit polls aren't always reliable, but if this is even in the ballpark, it is going to be a LONG night for McCain and the Republican Party."

Why? It's #1 for me, but I voted McCain.

Joyce   November 4th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Just remember.....with the majority of the Congress being Democrats...who do you think voted for all the things everyone
is blaming our President for????????

Tim   November 4th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Hope over fear, unity over division, reason over propaganda. Go Obama, end this nightmare!

California Gold   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

McCain is surely cringing with this news: the top issue to voters is his weakest subject.

scott   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

President Obama. It has a nice ring to it.

vic   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

IF the economy is the main issue with voters then why are people voting for McCain????????????????

Jack   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

I seriously don't know why it looks like there is going to be a very very close race. If it was my choice i would have just let everyone vote for who they truly like, not just for economics and the country but personality.

Groove   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

THey have been at him for close to two years. Give it a break.

Peter Croux   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Economy issue #1 is the absolutely correct view of the voters and shows people understand the real issues; the US will not be capable of maintaining its current standard of living without a fundamental restructuring of its economic base (i.e. repositioning the balance of power between companies and their employees, the government and its constituents, stimulating intelligent capital investment instead of flushing tax payers money down the drain, organise efficiënt governance oversight over critical economic areas etc).

With both the House and the Senate under Democratic control, McCain would not have a real chance of achieving anything fundamental. Obama has the chance, but the crisis is so deep, it will be a one shot game – the US can not afford 4 more years of failing economic policies.

E. Vititoe   November 4th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Congrats On Your Victory PRESIDENT OBAMA! IT'S TIME FOR THE REAL DEAL!

Jim   November 4th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

I do hope he wins it. I am holding my breathe that an ultraconservative twit like Palin could be heart beat from the Presidency. Want to comment on this as well. NOT liking Obama does not mean you are racist. I started out a huge fan of his, but I am less so now. THAT said, he got my vote mainly because of Palin the Twit being on McCain's ticket. I would have otherwise done a write-in vote for Hilary.

Reece City   November 4th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Thats the most important thing for AMERICA'S PERIOD!! I really hope these exit polls are true. And the Economy is the most important issues on the minds of our great Country that is in great turmoil. If that is the most important Issue its time for Michelle to start decorating the Oval Office. Go Obama/Biden

Prophecy Fullfilled.   November 4th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

if your still in line b4 the closing time, you will get to vote. 4-6 hours is less than 4-8 years :P

Never doubt the Bible again… It is really happening here and now:

.. “And in the land shall rise the son of Cain.” From the north The Deceiver[Palin], a known Beast of false witness; will take the mark of Cain.
Together they seek to spread fear and invoke hate among the refugees of sin.
In their quest for power they will ignore the light of truth shining on the deeds and words they proclaim.
But take heart, for throughout the land the seekers of light shall rise up and not be fooled. With their strength, the mark [Cain] will be cleansed from the earth and no longer hold power to sway the blind.

Can I get an amen…? :)

IMD   November 4th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

As important as it is to keep us safe and get our troops home, I have to agree: the #1 concern I have is my financial well-being (which is nowhere near as good as it was before.)

To quote a previous Republican candidate from many years ago "Am I better off than I was 4 (or even 8) years ago?"

Sadly, I am not, therefore, we need a change

Gamemanx.Com   November 4th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

If Obama loses Im going back to Ghana!

Frann A in CA   November 4th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Once Obama is elected, we can get down to reconstructing the broken systems on many fronts. The gloves come off and we get down into the trenches because the real work is yet to begin...

It's a Sisyphean battle on all fronts. Onward and upward!

Arthur James   November 4th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

I'm with you, Zeppo!

The media's been so soft on Obama, it's been like a cake walk.

If elected as president, maybe they'll finally start making him answer the tough questions and not settle for "I didn't know about it" as an answer.

Jeff   November 4th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

ALL Political voting tallies should be blacked out to the media until AFTER the elections!

theboxman   November 4th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

the more McCain opens his mouth the more votes his loses. He needs to learn that the less people know about him the more they like him.

He is like that scary Uncle who used pay all the female neices a dollar to sit on his lap and give him a kiss.

NM Voter   November 4th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I noticed Alaska's polls have not been updated on the CNN map since mid September. Is that because she is losing in Alaska or the polls are too close/in favor of Obama? She has further divided our country with her negative campaigning and ranks right up there with bush. Is she divisive in Alaska too? Just wondering.

SeriouslyGoodVibes   November 4th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

The economy being tops as an issue by a huge amount is by far the most significant "exit poll" datapoint.

We cannot expect ANY man to fix the problems this country has. Not Obama, and not McCain. The only one who can set this country and this world in order is GOD. We must put our faith and hope in Him if we want things to change.

Regardless of what happens today, God's will, will be done and I take comfort in knowing that.

God bless you all!
