Emergency paper ballots used because of broken NJ machines

(CNN) – Broken machines in Willingboro, New Jersey, have led to disruptions in voting, according to Joe Dugan, chairman of the Burlington County Election Board. Voters at Pennypacker Park Elemenary School have been given emergency paper ballots as a mechanic works on the machines, Dugan said. He added that he expects the machines to be up and running soon.

I voted in Newark this morning. The line was nearly out the door and there was only ONE electronic voting machine. Hopefully nothing goes wrong with it, because it didn't look like there was a back-up.

I hope everyone casts their vote & makes their voice heard regardless of whom you are voting.

Have there been reports of broken machines in any other areas besides heavily populated, likely-to-be major Democratic voting areas?

Willingboro,NJ is 70% african american and 20% white,10% other. However Willingboro is 95% ran by whites; one Highschool with poor graduation rates; no football team; and a all 95%white police force. Broken Polling not surprising here at all. Willingboro was rapped of its pride and money over 15 years ago. Blacks were in low numbers from the early 70's and started growing rapidly in the late 80's and 90's and of course as usual the whites move out in droves looking for "whiter" I mean higher ground. County government see's what is being neglected in Willingboro, they just dont care.

I live in the Bahamas and we are watching this election as the rest of the world.

If America does not have the capability to have a FAIR election, then what gives them the right to "govern" or overseen or even speak about Iraq's elections?

    Food for thought....

This is not unusual .... and is very unfortunate. Why can't they get it right?

The comment about the breakage being in a heavily populated African American community is very telling indead! Maybe this is not just coincidense........

Shame. These problems occur only in the poorer districts or those with an African-Amercian majority. How long are they going to patiently take this subversion of their voting rights?

It has been awhile that I have seen our comments all match! I TOTALLY AGREE with all of U. The FIX, for me is simple. SUE all of the companies that made these machines! WE had to pay for them, so why not DEMAND our money back! Take all of these SLOT MACHINES and dump them in the ocean, maybe they will make good fish homes!!

My Gosh, the unthinkable. Really? How come no back ups? This is pretty disgusting, giving that the Greatest Country in the World has Third World voting systems.
This is really scary. I wonder who is mucking up the works?
Come on America, grow up. Your citizens deserve the right to vote.
How could you ever send anyone to another Country to overseer their votes, when you cannot get it right yourselves.

Hey Palin Supporters - I have only one question – If she was in perfect health condition why did she have to wait until the EVE of election?? Apparently everything with republicans has got to do with the timings - she is cleared of troopergate just on the eve of election, she releases a medical note just on the eve of election!!! Too much of a coincidence? But then she was tooo busy attacking obama left and right!

I'm NOT a fan of obama either but there is no way on this earth that a moron like her can represent me!!! i'm a female and i think she is an embarrasement to my kind!!!

Here we go, already with the BS! It's okay though, this is something that can not be stopped! They always seem to come up with a way to discourage people – HANG IN THERE EVERYONE, BE PATIENT AND STEADFAST – IT'S GOING TO BE OKAY!

Talk about bad planning. With all of the mention of long lines and wait time this community still had only one machine per voting district. No back ups. I voted there at 6:45am and the spirit was so wonderful. The people in the line with the broken machine were all reserved to hold their ground and make every vote count. But really in 2008 ONE machine. They have to do better.
