(CNN) – Democrat Barack Obama is on target to win the critical battleground state of Ohio, CNN projects.

The projected victory makes it very difficult for Obama's rival John McCain to win the White House. No Republican has ever become president without winning Ohio.

Watch: Obama wins Ohio

Ohio is the first state that went for President Bush in 2004 but flipped to the Democratic column this year. No states that went Democratic in 2004 have yet gone for McCain.

The state's 20 electoral votes would bring Obama's total to 194, versus 69 for McCain. A candidate needs 270 to win.

CNN projections are based on exit polls and partial results.

I shocks me to see so many people that are so ignorant, that means lacking of knowledge, about Obama. some people believe things told them on wanting what they hear to be true even when they are not. do your home work and learn the truth, simple philosophy, believe nothing you hear and only half that you see!!!

First two comments from wolf on cnn was "An African American" "Our First Black Man".. As if that were the significant point.. The Point is We have a new President elect… Who was elected on a platform of change. Try to grow up Wolf

I can't think of much positive to say about Obama winning other than may be now CNN and most of the black population in this country will stop talking about how racist white America is. There is no way on earth that Obama wins without a lot of white voters. So may be people can stop playing the “race card” every time something doesn’t go their way. In addition, the double standard in this country needs to come to an end. You can’t continue to have these black organization that excluded other races (black colleges, BET, black newspaper & magazines, black radio, etc.) and not consider them racist. This is racism and you need to call it what it is. The racism I see in this country now is much strong from the black community than the white community. However, the media is afraid to address it because of this double standard. Blacks seem to be able to justify their racism. This needs to be address if this country is going to move forward with improving the race relationships and I am all for improving them. However, it can't all be one sided like it has in the past (in the past whites were always pointed at as being the racial issue and the ones that needed to change). White america's get tired of being called racist or listening to some black people or the media turn every little thing into a racial issue. This kind of stuff pushes both sides toward more racism even if they are trying not to be. Obama election has been all about change, it is time we see some positive change in the black community's attitudes about whites. This election was racist. Obama got 95% of the black vote not because of what he stands for but because he was black. That is a fact Jack. I am not talking about all blacks, but many didn’t have any idea about what he stands for nor did they really care. You may want to disagree with these points, but you need to come with some facts and data because I have much to back this up.

Alright people. It is all but over and Obama will be the next President. He was not my vote. Bush and the old Republicans in Washington did this to themselves and those who trusted them.

Let's stop with all the nastiness and come together and get OUR country back on track. Give the man a chance. Hell, Bush has 8 years. Support our President Elect Obama and let him have the opportunity to do that change he ran on.

If in 4 years it is not any better then we vote him out. That's one of the good thing about the United States of American, we get to vote for our President every 4 years.

I do wish that Pelosi and Reed would go home!

Canadian   November 4th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Look at the states Obama won…the entire northeastern part of the country. Now take a look at the red states, or as I like to call them, the redneck states.

People wonder why America is divided, and it's because half the people are still living in a world full of religious hate.

Perform an IQ test on the northeastern states compared to the southern and you'd see what I'm talking about. No offense to the minorities of these figures.

Reading these responses show that hatred and ignorance still lives. We should all take a look at the way the world has changed in the last eight years and judge by that. We have lost thousands of brave soldiers, hard working american citizens both white and black have lost their jobs their homes and their stability. We are in need of a major make over in the united states. Mccain ran a good race but the fact of the matter is all people of all races have lost faith in the government. Facts state that the government has been run by republicans for the past eight years. It is time for the republicans to let the democratics get the job done. Bush messed us all up and all of you who are upset that obama may win need to admit that. Obama can do this he has my support and if in one year the economy is worse I will still stand by and be proud of the vote I cast on nov. 4 2008. God bless america and God bless all the people who have hate in their hearts because you will need it.

Liberal media bias + idiotic sheep of America + white guilt + black racism = an inexperienced, unqualified, socialist, radical, terrorist President. Time to take from the hard-working and give to the lazy and jealous. Don't forget that the economy failure is due to Democrats' green-lighting subprime mortgages. The idiocy of liberal Americans amazes me.

Personally, I believe that both candidates love their country and are patriots. Either one will give us the change we desperately need (although they may take us on different paths to get there). John from California   November 4th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I grew up in a conservative part of Michigan. I moved to California in my 20s, and it was a liberating experience. I endured the misguided Vietnam war (initiated by Democrats), and became informed and educated along the way. I watched the Bush administration start another war that I vehemently opposed. I watched as the economy started to fail, and I wasn't surprised, though Allen Greenspan was. I've watched the Christian right exercise far too much control, and now I'm watching a change that I believe will be a vast improvement over what the Republicans have been serving up. I'm ready, however, and I believe Obama will be too, to work on mending the political fabric of our country. Rude discourse and ranting opinions need to be tempered with intelligent thought and commentary. Thank you Ohio!

Anonymous   November 4th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I am so glad that this election is over. A lot of people don't want to believe that racism is still alive and these past 18 months have proven that. Race should not have had anything to do with the election at all but it did, it should have been the best person for the nation not the color of their skin. I know several Democrats that voted Republican because they do not want an African American to be President. I just cannot for the life of me see how anyone could have voted for McCain/Palin the only thing I heard from them is what Obama wants to do or can't do well what were their plans for the nation? I can't stand to see her or even listen to her she acts like she is running for a popularity contest or still in a beauty pagent. I mean I just don't understand how anyone can think that she is qualified to be a leader. Wake up people it's time to let go of the hate for other races. I don't believe that any one color is any better than the other. I could care less what color the candidates were as long as they are Democrat that's the way I was voting. Let it go!!!!!

LISA   November 4th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

*No matter what your political convictions are this is an eye opener….What
a thankless people we are!!!

David Letterman, on President Bush. (Surprising)

David Letterman wrote this; it's the David we don't often see….

'As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been,
but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it
seems to hit the mark.' 'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine
and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be
true given the
source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with
the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country
is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the
citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I
am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?'

A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days
a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer
and heating in the winter?

C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and
see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific
Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification
papers as we move through each state.
F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find
along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from
around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up
and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you
to the hospital.

I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a
group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch
equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family, and your
belongings.

K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a
burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a
bullet-proof
vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias
raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of
teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we
enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world
has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great
disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed
people in the world who do nothing but complain about what
we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the
good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no
plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval
rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days
after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of
recession? Could
this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for
succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist
attacks? The
commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending
you an d me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this
news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a
look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think
about it……are you upset at the President because he actually caused you
personal
pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your
sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom.
There is
currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able
to refuse to go and end up with either a "general" discharge, an
'other than honorable" discharge or, worst case scenario, a
"dishonorable' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of
Americans?

Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and
they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with
blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner?
The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They
offer what
sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying'
them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like
O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he
did he would have done it this way……Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom
of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country.
There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed
people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be
thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of
control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the countr y
from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist
attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of

John 123   November 4th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Let the back-pedaling begin. Now that he's got the Presidency, be prepared for the great re-writing of the election rhetoric:

From now to Jan, watch how that magic number of who won't see a tax increase to change from $250K, to $200K, to $150K.

Then, watch the back-pedaling when they say, no, we meant FAMILIES that make less than $150K, so that really just means individuals making less than $75K.

Then, watch even more back-pedaling as they start saying they only mean your INCOME taxes won't go up, but that they didn't promise anything about all your other taxes (which will of course be going up).

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we're about to spend the next three months being told that what we heard isn't the same as what was really said.

Anonymous   November 4th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

just hope he's the savior everyone thinks he is…

if he's not, it won't matter. Charisma tends to do that to sheep.

Congrautualtions USA:

There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.

I don't know if Americans know how close you've come to being left behind as dead weight as the rest of the planet moves into a whole new united effort. Obama was your best hope and dam good hope if I do say so! He's going to need all of you with him so I hope those who are dissappointed can show their patriotism by standing behind your President.

Congratulations – Well Done!

@ Tony

We've suffered from uninformed unintelligent leadership and their devoted followers for the past 8 years.
Now step aside and quit hating while the smart folks fix the damage done by you rethugs.
Oh and by the way, until the rethug brand retools and becomes more "inclusive", you don't have a shot in h e double hockey stick of gathering more youth and minority vote. The party of the old stuffed shirts and fake Christian Conservative right is out.

I think both candidates ran respectable campaigns. The recent figures saying both candidates were over 60% negative are misleading.

The kind of negative that we saw in 2000 and 2004 was not present in this election. Nor was Karl Rove. Coincidence? I think not.

Gotta love how the higher turnout of mostly uninformed follow-the-crowd has affected this election. It's scary, actually. Oh well, it's only 4 more years of ineptitude at the worst-case scenario and in the interim we can enjoy bashing Obama like the Democrats mindlessly bashed Bush for the past 8 years. It works both ways folks. ;)

Thanks Ohio. again.

I still think it is too early to say. There have been some minor problems, give it about another hour and a half . It is so close, and alot of the older voters were waiting until today to vote, and many of them had to use a paper ballot.

I don't consider myself a republican, I was all for getting republicans out of office and electing a democrat until I sw who it was!!! I'm seriously scared of what is going to happen in the next 4 years and hopefully thats all it is and we aren't stupid enough to do this to ourselves again!!!!

You've succeeded in helping to elect the most under-examined, inexperienced, pro-abortion, anti-family, anti-free-market President in my lifetime. You guys should get your group of reporters together and have a giant celebration. You did an outstanding job of tearing apart one candidate while worshiping the other. A special congrats to David Gergen, Wolf Blitzer, and their teams. I can only say this….I hope when the tax rates hit about 55% you all have to pay your fair share just like the rest of us. You should change the name of your network to "The Obama Channel."

So when everything stays the same or even gets worse, will ANYONE out there admit they voted for Barack Obama today??? In two years, we can recover by voting in the Republicans back into the Senate and the House.

The 2008 Presidential Election
John McCain is like a gladiator,
while Barack Obama is a negotiator.
What's needed in this time of crisis?
Someone who could lead without bias.

We need one who's cool under fire,
and not seen as an impulsive liar.
Someone who can think on his feet,
and will never, ever concede defeat.

Someone who is intelligent and kind,
and able to get us out of this bind.
Someone that we can always trust,
and will do his best–that's a must!

Someone who'll know just what to do,
and always strive to follow through.
If he'll do so we'll all be blessed,
for he'll have weathered every test!
