Some voters took advantage of early voting in New Mexico.
Some voters took advantage of early voting in New Mexico.

(CNN) - Officials in Dona Ana County, New Mexico say they are having problems with absentee ballots. But it's unclear just how many voters may not see their vote count.

Jess Williams, public information officer for the county, said of 11,985 absentee ballots requested, 8,141 have been processed. As of midday Tuesday, the number of outstanding absentee ballots is 3,844.

And the Bureau of Elections is still getting calls from residents who have not yet received their absentee ballots, Williams said. He said those voters may go to the polling place where they are registered to request a provisional ballot and they will be allowed to vote.

While that may be an option for some, many voters vote absentee because health problems keep them from going to the polls. Others are away at college, in the military, or out of town for other reasons, and showing up in person may not be possible.

In order to be counted, absentee ballots must reach the county clerk's Office no later than 7pm local time on election day. Absentee ballots also can be delivered to polling places on election day, but only the voter can deliver it.

Both Democrats and Republicans in the county say they are getting calls from voters who feel they've been left out.

Chris Salas, a spokesman for the county Democratic party, said the party office was getting "tons of calls" from people complaining because they have not gotten ballots. Gen Mitchell, a volunteer at the Dona Ana County Republican party, said "legally they were supposed to have them [absentee ballots] out, and they didn't get them out."

Here we go with more ridiculous Democrats screaming foul play. Ever consider the fact that about 1/2 of the people running the polls are Democrats? If Obama doesn't win a state, it's the Republican machine cheating; if there are no problems with the voting location, and Obama doesn't win the state, it's because of the racists voting for McCain. You liberals have been working your lies, hiding the truth, and utilizing the liberal media for free! What more could you ask for in this election?

Roxann   November 4th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Quote from above:
"Mark my words, with Obama as President and Congress controlled by Democrats we are in for high taxes, bigger deficits, bigger government, and very high unemployement."

Hmmmmm. Sorry to break this to you, but that is exactly what Bush and his wrecking crew gave us. Under Clinton, we had lower taxes, smaller deficits, smaller government, and lower unemployment. Bush took us the opposite direction.

Eventually, hopefully today, the voters will pay attention to the facts and not the myths and lies put forth by the Republican negativity machine.

The day OF the election is not the day to complain about not receiving your absentee ballot, not sure how that is the GOP's fault that these lazy people waited till today to complain about it!!!!

Higher taxes if Obama wins??? But but but....that would mean that Obama lied to us =oP

Kent Gilliam (Dallas)   November 4th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Are you kidding me? You wait until election day to report you haven't received your absentee ballot! What crap! The republicans will love to jump on this as the reason they lose.

but seriously new mexico, first the drunk voting incident, now this? does my home state have any sense of pride or concern for our national identity left?

This is Insane! There is no acceptable Excuse for this many people to not have received their absentte ballots. Something smells really fishy.

Eye roller   November 4th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Hey, I have news for you, my Absentee ballot did not count for ANYTHING when I lived outside of the country, neither do our votes in reality. The Electoral college votes for whomever they want.

But, I still say that I have hopes that my votes actually DO count someday. So, I still do it.

Anonymous   November 4th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

i am republican as my grandfather, and father. none of us received our absentee ballots. Only my brother received his absentee ballot and he is a registered libertarian. (and this is all to the same address)

Gerie   November 4th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

What is CNN thinking by showing a black woman saying"I never thought that I would see the day when blacks would rule America"? It is as if you are inciting fear from whites who are not sure yet about their own views on race and encouraging them to vote for McCain.

Clinton   November 4th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

I think McCain made a horrible mistake when he nominated Sarah Palin as VP. She has NO CLUE what so ever what a VPs role is. If McCain wins I hate to see our countrys future if what everone says about Palin for 2012 is true. It would be like putting Jessica Simpson or Paris Hilton in as President. All three women are NOT the brightest bulb in the box.

If Obama wins he may not survive the four years he is elected to office. There has already been an attempt on his life. The crazy people will come out of the woodwork and make many more attempts on his life. If Obama is Elected to office I HOPE that the AFRICAN AMERICANS QUIT USING THE RACISIM CARD. An African American can not get a higher position in our country than the President!!!!!

NOMccainPalin   November 4th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

What the hell is wrong with this country what happen to the Democrats please do not let the the right wing GOP steal this election again.

Bobbi   November 4th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Hugh, you HAD a congress controlled by the GOP with a Republican president. you know what happened? They spent money 17% FASTER! That's right, your so-called "conservative" GOP spent taxpayer money like drunken sailors on shore leave. But not YOUR money, because they don't have the courage to raise taxes to pay for their spending sprees. No, they BORROW the money, jack up 500 billion dollar deficits, and make our children and grandchildren pay for it.

The highest ten deficits in our nation's history were presided over by Bushes: Seven by Dubya, three by his father.

But you people still think Republicans are good with money.

SE NM   November 4th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Unfortunate but true.... Incompetence is often exploited by corruption; such as the case we are seeing in New Mexico. There are still naive people out there who think that this can't happen in their area. Those ballots are probably in the belly of McCain's plane that flew out of Roswell yesterday; right next to the $150,000 wardrobe of Palin.

Sam, Seattle   November 4th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Lets call a spade a spade, Republicans have for decades now done all they can to supress votes. In Colorado republicans are going door to door collecting absentee ballots telling the voters that they will fill in the vote for them, this is in Pueblo (highly Democrat).Obama and Democrats have been called anti-american..please! How can anyone even want to be Republican, they have shown to be as anti-american as you can get. The GOP is done, may history judge them correctly.

Jax, FL   November 4th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

I can't wait to hear what screw ups start occurring in FL. I'm sure we are next. I like Obama but he has manchurian candidate written all over him.

Sue   November 4th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

This always amazes me....
if you don't know where they are, then how do you know what "they" are or if "they" ever existed? The district clerks that are in control of the election process are corrupt and they are engaging in nefarious activities to disenfranchise voters. Those "missing" ballots are clearly connected to PEOPLE who have voted already... so if they are acknowledging them as "missing", then these people should be contacted to vote again. I hate incompetent people in control of our voting process!!

Kris in NY   November 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

We can file our taxes online .... you'd think we'd be able to vote onine. That would take care of missing ballots and I imagine a lot more people would vote if they didn't have to stand in line. Hmm – just a thought.

Nikkie   November 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

My husband and I received our absentee ballots from NM. He's in the military and for some of those who have commented, NM usually goes Democratic. I sent mine back in plenty of time and we overnighted his last night. Due to his miltiary service he wasn't available until Sunday to complete his ballot, but being that whoever is elected will be his Commander in Chief, he wanted his vote to be counted.

TDB   November 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Isn't it normal for this many absentee balots to not show up on time? Hey CNN, howw about putting it in perspective for us?

julie   November 4th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Turner in GA- How is it the Gop when it has been the dems. that have so been for early voting. The 3thousand or so ballots are prob. all voting for mccain and it's the dems. that somehow missplaced them. If it were up to the gop everyone would get 1 fair vote. Not the 40 or so fraud votes for 1 person from acorn!!!!!

Jude   November 4th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Here we go....the GOP trying to steal the election. If Obama loses...we know that the GOP and their dirty tactics are at fault. This is nothing more than voter suppresion.

The way to beat the cr*p out of this nonsense is to get everyone out to vote and vote for Obama/Biden. Lets just clearly beat them up so that there is no question, no doubt who won the election. If it ends in a landslide for Obama we can put to rest the divisive politics and heal this nation. Come together as one nation!!!

Obama/Biden....now go out and vote and get your gradma, ma, pop, bro, and sis too. God bless

Cuyahoga Falls, OH   November 4th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Turner,

What do you mean "Here we go again with the GOP trickery??" Do you honestly believe that the Democratic ticket doesn't play the same game? Remember the thousands upon thousands of absentee ballots Al Gore wanted thrown out in the 2000 election in Florida, because they were mainly military ballots, which leans towards the right. Sure, he wanted a recount, but only in democratic counties, not the entire state. Stealing an election...when will the whining stop and the look to the future begin? Here's a question for you...if Obama were to lose, would it be legitimate in your eyes? Let me answere for you...NO, regardless of the circumstances.

One thing we do agree on...ALL votes should count!

Frank   November 4th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

This is such a flawed system, the process is full of loop holes and is created with the invitation for voter fraud. it shouldnt be this difficult. How hard is it to create a process where I check a box that says who I want to be the president of the country. The company that creates this process is the real terrorist, we're being attacked from the inside.

My wife and I, registered Democrats, voted absentee in Iowa, partly because we were on a long trip getting back just before the election – and who knows what might delay us (car trouble, accident, health problems – we are "senior citizens"). The ballots arrived the morning we left and we had to fill them out and mail them from Indiana. Well, we are here and we checked at the polling place to see if our ballots were received, and there was no way to do that – we were marked as not being allowed to vote today because we'd requested the ballots. We had to call the Republican county auditor (in a different city) to find out they were received. So I hope they are counted, but I have no way to check that! The chances they are being counted, however, is probably 100%, so I won't worry.

For Turner, GA.......I am sick and tired of DEMOWINERS losing and blaming it on trickery and fraud. I guess when Obama wins this election I should immediately state that since the liberal left media machine went one-sided for Obama that he Republicans didnt have a chance!!!! Stop Wining. I wish more than anything that we had a Republican controlled Congress. Mark my words, with Obama as President and Congress controlled by Democrats we are in for high taxes, bigger deficits, bigger government, and very high unemployement. And yes, that will happen some because of the current crisis, but mostly because of unchecked Democratic rule!!

I live in California and go to school away from home, and this was also a problem for me. The voting office told me to come home to where im registered to vote. That is ridiculous and not an option for me. the fact that this is a problem this day and age is disgusting. People need to get their jobs done and done right, and apparently that is not happening. Every citizen of this country has the right to vote. Period. I just hope this doesnt effect the presidency (probably wont in CA), but the propostitions here are what im really worried about. Someone in NM needs to take responsibility for this and correct it. It may be too late now, which is a shame. Step it up, people!

it not surprising. something like this will always happen especially in a such big election. i think they do that on purpose and its not fair tp the voters who take the time out to vote.

VT   November 4th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

If they hadn't received the ballot by now, then they should have contacted someone. They were not steadfast in taking proactive action to secure their right to vote. I find it very difficult to be sympathetic.

Marcus Cyganiak   November 4th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

If the Republicans want to provide a good America, then why not win the Election within a good manner of fairness?

In the 2000 Presidential Election between Al Gore and George W. Bush, the Republicans stole it for Bush, and that was corrupt. That corruptness continued throughout Bush's entire 8-year term as President. This has to stop, and it begins with Barack Obma of the Democrats.

Canada wants Obama, and America should want Obama if they too want a good America. A good America will result in a revival of that original American Dream, a dream that has been missing since the 90's with President Bill Clinton.

Please America, do not back down on this Election! Make sure your vote counts, and make sure your vote makes an impact with Barack Obama!

Months of hand wringing and discussions about how we can't disenfranchise voters – and there are still thousands of complaints from all over the country. Whether it be intentional or incompetence, this election is going to result in lawsuits and bad feelings no matter who wins. Instead of working together to fix problems, people have been pointing fingers, and will continue to do so. Looks to me like we need two new political parties – the current ones are corrupt, incompetent and callous in their actions.

Gloria - Minnesota   November 4th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

That is crazy! The absentee and/or mail-in ballots should be the FIRST to arrive at their respective polling places. (Of course, as the article states, they must be in the County Clerk's office by 7 p.m. on election day, but with so many Americans voting absentee or through the mail for a variety of reasons, there is no legitimate excuse for all these ballots to be MIA!!)

Gee, i wonder if the election officials are Republicans?

Get out and vote people! The GOP voter suppression machine is in full swing, and the only way of beating it is to vote in overwhelming numbers.

THIS, "my friends," is voter fraud, not what happened with ACORN.

ACORN got some registrations that were questionable, and when they turned them in to election officials, they TOLD the officials they thought they were suspect. However, they are required by law to turn in every registration form they receive. It's the job of election officials to determine if the registrations are legitimate.

Christine CT   November 4th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

sandee in Portland   November 4th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I am so appalled at all of this turmoil surrounding the people's right to vote and have their voices heard. Since voting and how it's done is determined by each individual state, people in the states that continually have problems need to stand up to their local government and demand these problems be fixed. Don't wait until it's time to vote again, do it now and in the days to come. Call or e-mail your representative. If they think they won't get re-elected the next time, they will do something to correct the problem.

Joanne Smith   November 4th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

This is absolutely not fair to voters that need to vote absentee. There should be a law that prohibits the election officials from this kind of behavior, especially in an election as big and important as this one. This is a disgrace to this country.

Red, Red WHINE!!   November 4th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Ok, this is just pathetic now. At first it was ok for there to be a few 'problems', but to see so many across the nation? This has GOT to be investigated....we learned absolutely NOTHING from our 2000 and 2004 elections. This is truly embarrasing.
