Soggy ballots challenging scanning machines in Chesapeake, VA

Virginia voters faced rainy weather early Tuesday morning while waiting to vote.
Virginia voters faced rainy weather early Tuesday morning while waiting to vote.

(CNN) – Some voting machines are not working properly in Chesapeake, Virginia because of wet weather, according to voters and the State Board of Elections. Spokesman Ryan Enright confirmed the rain is throwing a wrench in the works in a few places that use optical-scan paper ballots.

He said ballots were getting soaked as water drips off wet voters walking into polling stations. That makes the scanner unable to read a ballot.

The Virginia State Board of Elections is encouraging all voters to dry off before filing out ballots to avoid problems.

And to solve the problem of wet ballots, the polling station is collecting them in a secure container next to the polling machine. Once dried, these ballots will be tabulated by officials, Enright said.

He added that while this will mean a longer processing time for election officials, it should not affect voters and their wait time.

Don't trust anyone – demand a dry ballot and guard it carefully. The republicans will do anything to steal this election too.

We have morons running the elections in this country. There is no excuse in this country for voters having to wait in long lines at the polls, much less wet paper ballots fouling up machines.

Why can't they provide towels to dry off the hands just prior to voting?

    Go Obama.

It's official, my Commonwealth needs to wear the dunce hat and sit in a corner. Governor Kaine, extend voting hours immediately to 10 PM because this is an unmitigated disaster!

Now, I'm naive enough to still give them the benefit of the doubt...
But if it happens a third time, you know what is going on.

A bunch of people looking at cnn.com at 9:28(cst) in the morning know about the wet ballots making it hard to vote but the election officials don't?

I am waiting for CNN to post on its front page the news that Sarah Palin was cleared of any wrong doing in the Troopergate investigation. You liberals trashed her and made sure that Troopergate was on the front page of every liberal website when it looked like she may have done something wrong, and now that it has been proven she did NOTHING wrong, you cannot find the story anywhere. It has become such a sad state of affairs. Liberals are working overtime to ruin this country.

Off course our liberal media is showing a big gap. If they can not spread false and negative information they could not stay in a job. Wait till there man Obama gets into office and lets just see how much they will cover up then.

It is ridiculous that we can't manage to have reliable voting machines. In NYC we still have those acient machines with the big lever. I'm no ludite, but you never hear of voting problems here. If it ain't broke...

Maybe we should all just be given a piece of paper, put a check mark next to our candidates and be done with it.

This great country that is supposed to be ahead all other countries, when it comes to the voting process is a shame. We have a present president that was going to bring democracy to Iraq and here we don't even have the voting process down pad. Does this say anything?

OK ... the ridiculous manner and situation in which Americans are forced to vote is getting to be too much. The two big priorities on November 5 for the President-elect ... the economy and fixing the clearly BROKEN voting system in time for the next round of elections. This is one election where I am glad that I voted by absentee ballot as an American Abroad ... at least I didn't have to wait in a line, face a broken machine or be soaked in rain!

WET BALLOTS! Get the voters to dry off before filling the ballots. It is important that recounts are avoided because of wet ballots.

Is this the 21st century? Sometimes I wonder, given these snafus at the polling places. When the wet ballots mix, is there a possibility that the marks will bleed into each other and the votes will be unreadable?

Noah, liberals, conservatives, and middle-of-the-roads are ALL working overtime to ruin the country. That's what happens when there is a two-party system that doesn't make a person run solely on their own merit.
