NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Global stocks traded higher and U.S. futures rose on Tuesday as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was named the projected winner.

The Nikkei, the major index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, rose 2.8 percent in early trading. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong surged almost 6 percent at its open. The Australian All Ordinaries index was up nearly 2 percent.

Watch: A turning point in history

Americans turned out in record numbers to cast their votes for Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. At 11 p.m., CNN projected Obama as the winner over McCain in the electoral college.

Obama's substantial lead was providing optimism for global markets.

"From the world perspective, Obama is perceived as a better candidate and I think they are voting with their dollars," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

Yeah, about that... come visit us a year from now when we'll be sporting double-digit inflation, unemployment and interest rates, and then we'll see how well your statement holds up.

On a positive note, Obama is the greatest gift God could bestow upon Jimmy Carter... he'll no longer be the poster boy of America's socialist failures.

"congratulate you and your good bride."

    Definition:
bride -Noun-a woman who has just been or is about to be married

Obama has been married to his wife for over 14 years.

As usual what is Bush talking about?

    dave,

Get real, the last thing the radicals wanted for us to cut off their best recruiting program, us attacking the middle east.

Who are the great leaders of our time?

Ghandi, JFK, Martin L. King, Dali Llama, etc, all peace lovers.

See where the past and current warmongers are, maybe a light bulb will go off in your head.

  23. Uh huh

The market always rises after an election because even bad news is known news and that's better than the unknown. It's been proven that there is absolutely no known connection between WHO becomes president, just that a decision has been made. My guess is it won't last for long (traditionally through December) and then when the novice becomes prez officially and starts with the taxing of companies and folks over $250k and putting harsh limits on coal plants which operate 50% of the electrical grid in the U.S., well, that's when we'll see the real reaction to this inexperienced dolt.
