Palin, at McCain's concession Tuesday night, boosted the GOP ticket at first but ultimately became a drag on it.

PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) – Sarah Palin's selection as John McCain's running mate redefined how vice-presidential candidates influence a campaign. Unfortunately for McCain, the Alaska governor hurt his presidential bid more than she helped.

Watch: Palin weighs in on 2012

Palin had been unfamiliar to most Americans, aside from some conservative writers and bloggers, who had admired her since she upended Alaska's Republican establishment by knocking off incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in 2006.

That all changed on August 29 - the morning after Sen. Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention - when Palin was introduced by McCain.

It wasn't just reporters who were stunned. Even McCain staffers at the event itself were shocked. Many assumed McCain would tap a GOP heavyweight like Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty. The most daring option, many thought, would be Joe Lieberman, a former Democrat.

But Palin's debut instantly energized the Republican base, which had long been cool to McCain, and the GOP ticket surged in the polls.

Elitist   November 5th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Just goes to show how much farther we need to go for gender equality in this country. All the women in this race were treated terribly. Palin should be respected regardless if you disagree. And just because she is not a democrat female doesn't mean she doesn't doesn't represent woman. I am ashamed at how my former party has treated her and not taken a higher road. And this "she started it..." 4 year old attitude is ridiculous. If you disagree, respectfully disagree. If she says something that you consider out of line and then say "hey, that's not appropraite" or, "that is not correct because here are the facts and sources to back it up" and move one.

This is "supposed" to be the party of feminist who stand up for equal treatment of women and of everyone. Not the party that viciously attacks innocent children because you disagree with parents' politics. What is wrong with you? I've seen so much hatred even directed at her children, AT HER BABY for Christ's sake. And then you talk about unity???

Canadian Visitor   November 5th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Watching your whole race, Palin was good for the McCain ticket as the GOP had a hard time settling on who would get the top spot themselves. Palin faced the same wrath of the media onslaught with total negativity against her from the moment her name was announced. It was the same for Senator Clinton. In the theme of electing the first African American President, both women were treated with considerably less respect than they had earned as elected officials. It appears that the media want to appalud themselves on the US race related issues but could not see that they were crucifying both women to get there.

Gov. Palin stated that the God of your understanding will make the choice of President & Vice President. Well like she stated, the choice has been made! See ya! Wouldn't want to be ya!

Sarah Palin is an atrocious human being. She race-baited and charged up hate rallies. I never want to see her face again.

TRECEY   November 5th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Well she still has a promising career on SNL! I think she makes a great actress/comedian/game show host.

John   November 5th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I can't believe anyone is seriously considering Sarah Palin for any national office in the future. Does anyone remember Catherine Harris?

Liz   November 5th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Some people posting here today seem to think that Sarah Palin got a "raw deal" because she is female. She may have been selected for the GOP ticket because she was female... but the ridicule that came about over her lack of knowledge and the extreme right wing stance she took had nothing to do with gender. Does anyone remember Dan Quayle? The GOP took a lot of heat for him being unqualified and generally ridiculous; she reminds me of him. I really think her gender was not the target.

See you in 2012 Governor Palin – that is if we are still America.

Vicki5   November 5th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

She shouldn't have "taken off the gloves". Once she did, by going with division over unity and prejudice and fear over hope, that's when people took off their gloves too. If she hadn't done that, she would have faired much better.

I always suspected she'd end up hurting more than she helped – an early indication was when Obama had a record fundraising day after her convention speech.

Good to see that suspicion confirmed.

I am really surprised to see Sarah Palin still wearing the $150,000 outfits that she was supposed to give to charities just after the election. Has she changed her mind and decided to wait until 2012 to run for presidency with these clothes?

Hoosier female here. I have no problem with a qualified woman running for president.

I have major issues with a woman who spouts ignorance and flip comments being even near the Oval Office.

justobserve   November 5th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Palin was a drag on McCain because she exemplified the worst of Republicans: divisiveness, racism, anti-intellectualism and straight-faced lies. She could attack Obama all she wants but it must be the truths, not twisted truths. Unfortunately it seems that is the way politics is playing in Alaska with its corruptions and narrow-mindedness as business as usual.

Yes Sarah truly is a polarizing, divisive candidate that did far more harm than good to the GOP.

Actually it was really her speechwriters that are to blame and the ridiculous obsession over "Joe the Plumber" whom isn't even named Joe nor has a license.

Peter (CA)   November 5th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Palin was the most unqualified person on a national ticket since Dan Quayle (right wingers-I said unqualified, not inexperienced).
She has little intellectual curiousity and a "shoot first" mentality that would make W proud. She was brought on as a prop and rightly rejected–not because she is a woman but because she could not do the job. Her speeches were vile and unbecoming.

Problem is if Stevens holds the Senate seat in Alaska, we will have Caribou Barbie in the Senate when he is removed from his seat. The Republicans can put her as the new face of the party but that will eventually bite them in the behind.

No Hillary-Get over it, Hillary did.

Dave, central Illinois-Please find a rock to crawl under.

Rick   November 5th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Palin's impact on the ticket this time, and her future in 2012, can both be summed up in one phrase: Dan Quayle with lipstick. Only difference is, he would have been more qualified (and is probably a better speller).

Stick a fork in her. She's done.

VA Bob   November 5th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

To all the hateful folks screaming about being looted and robbed, it is apparent you know nothing of politics beyond slogans you scream.
What elected party is going to raise taxes to reward moochers and loafers(exempting bankers and Wall Street and Big Oil, the Republicans favorite charities).
You people make no sense beyond the fact that you hate for the sake of hate. Such childish behavior.
I was a Hillary supporter, who was disappointed, but when push came to shove realized that Barack represented her views as well as his own. Beyond cleaning up the mess left behind by the "Joe the Plumbers" presently in the White House, this Nation has alot of work ahead to attempt to heal this hateful divide, seen in some of these comments, left to us by Bush\Cheney and their old pal Karl. That is the only legacy they leave behind-a pathetic one at that. "We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men are created equal." Finally that thought has been carried to its logical conclusion.

ATLian   November 5th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

From the minute she mocked Obama as "just a community organizer" I knew she was dead meat. Her devisive Republican politics are no longer welcomed. Obama ran a brilliant campaign. He never waivered from his theme of hope and change no matter what they threw at him. He never got down in the mud with them even though they threw the kitchen sink at him. So she had more experience than Obama? Well, in this world intelligence and character trump experience every time.

The very thought of Michelle Obama being in the whitehouse makes me sick to my stomach. A woman full of hate, this has set the standard for first lady to the lowest low.

When Obama raises our taxes, Blacks no more excuses, get a job and help pay your fair share, NO MORE EXCUSES.

Wade   November 5th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

How could anyone seriously choose this woman as a good candidate for any office. Personally I dont see her being able to run a fast food restaraunt much less this country!!

Dawn   November 5th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

So this is what bringing the country together means? Bashing a sitting governor, a wife, a mother of 5, a sister, a daughter? How much more sad can you people get. Obama won, and I didn't vote for him. I will not however demean him the way those on the left demeaned Sarah Palin, John McCain, or Pres. Bush. Your hatred has evidently not gone away. I feel sorry for you all.

F.Johnson.   November 5th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

McCain-Palin ticket crashed and burned. It was arson. But they set the fires themselves. Those who blamed Sarah Palin for the lost, , need to be reminded, whose experience and judgement picked her to be VP.

The GOP can blame Palin all they want but the truth is that it wasn't the woman that was rejected as much as it was the woman's message. If the Republican Party doesn't get rid of their right wing extremists and Evangelicals then they will never get back to being a viable choice in American Politics.

Dave in central Illinois, that much hatred is bad for your health.
You should see a doctor. In the mean time don't worry, your world won't turn into a watermellon, the bald eagle won't be replaced with a fried chicken, and the national athem won't be done in rap. Barak Obama will be judged based on his performance, just like any other person. If he fails the electoriate will reject him, if he succeeds he will be re-elected. Your face won't turn brown, and your lips won't get thick so just relax and enjoy the ride. Either that, or go see a doctor.

Chris   November 5th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Thank-you Republicans. You have managed to divide and destroy our democracy, but not before enough of us realized what was happening. Obama's victory, is a victory for a change in direction and a restoration of what can make this country great. Blind arrogance and divisive tactics will not work any more. The people have spoken. Get back to your core principles and you might be trusted at the reins in 4 years.

Dave In Ohio   November 5th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I know it's a pipe dream to hope that evangelicals will go away forever, but hopefully we'll have at least 4 years without their foolish nonsense.

Marc PDX   November 5th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Nothing highlighted the media bias in this election more than the contrast in how Sarah Palin and Barack Obama were portrayed and treated. McCain probably made a mistake picking someone as inexperienced as Palin as his running mate. Eventually she may be a fine national politician, but not now. The media put enormous focus on her inexperience at every opportunity. She was more thoroughly covered than any of the other three candidates even though she was the running mate, not the presidential candidate. Obama didn't have appreciably more experience than Palin, on the other hand, yet the media thought nothing of that. Double standard. Ok for me, but not for you. But someone put it very well last night: If Palin is to inexperienced then Obama is too inexperienced. And he's the one running for President. But the media only cared about one person's inexperience in this election, not the others'.

dick bohanon   November 5th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Chris from St. Louis   November 5th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Palin ... you need to learn how to be presidential before you consider running again. Shed hate and negativism. Devise a consistent message and give America something positive (your own ideas ... not stealing!). NEVER LIE to American people. Also, learn that governing is not a family affair. Leave your husband and kids at home, regularly go to office and work ... work hard for people. After achieving all these, we will give you a fair chance in the lower 48.

Wish you and your family the best ...

RealityKing   November 5th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Sarah certainly exposed the MSM as liberal partisans more than will to put their agenda ahead of Americas right to unfiltered truth. And now..., deemed useless as tits on a worthog, MSM liberal parrots should be skip over, in order to access their real source, Obama's website.

It would have been a surprise if a Republican had won this time around with the political climate as it was, along with the economy. I don't think Palin had anything to do with it.

MC CAIN MADE A MISTAKE AND CHOOSE PALIN. WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE DONE IS CHOOSE ROOMEY, AND CHOOSE HER TO RALLEY THE BASE, BY GETTING HER TO CAMPAGNE FOR HIM. THEM HE MIGHT HAVE HAD A BETTER CHANCE TO BECOME PRESIDENT.

Jack   November 5th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Sarah Palin represented the "dumbing down" of America, and I'm glad that America chose intelligence over her grating "folksiness". In the prank call from CKOI in Montreal, she missed a myriad of obvious points that should have given it away:

1. You cannot see Belgium from the Palais Royal in Paris where Sarkozy lives.

2. The Prime Minister of Canada is not Stef Carse but Stephen Harper.

3. No politician would talk about loving to "take away life" and the horrendous mistreatment of animals that she seemed to embrace in that conversation.

4. No politician would talk about killing baby seals.

Honestly, I would have been afraid of having someone so ignorant of the world in the office of the VP so close to the presidency. I'm glad this chance has been denied her (it should never have been a possibility to begin with).

Lisa P   November 5th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

In the end what really amazes me is how very limited and closed-off Palin's self-propagating world view is. Even more amazing she appears to think that she and the people who agree with her or look like her or live how she does somehow represent the real America. She is very wrong about that, as has been clear from the outset. God spoke yesterday for the good of the nation, but I suspect that she and her friends are even now denying the facts and trying to find some way to distort God's message to their own advantage.

Speaking of which, I find it funny that Palin and McCain could only attack Obama and Biden by taking their quotes out of context but that the most effective attacks on Palin simply consisted of quoting her verbatim, the more the better. Very ironic.

Gail AL.   November 5th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I just hope Obama can hold it together, till 2012. If he doesn't throw us into a depression, or get us attacked, from his little expericence and judgement. Now we have an african- american for our president, 95% of blacks voted for him because he is black, not for what is good for the country, Let's see if Obama can deliver, After 4 years Obama's supporters will be ready to throw him out of the whitehouse. If he doesn't get us all killed first.

GOD HELP US ALL

I think we are in for a world of a surprise when we find out that there is no man that can change this world. No matter who he is or claims of what he can do. If all the people are not on the same page with the same idea with the same goal in mind then we will not have a chance.

Irma in North Carolina   November 5th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Well Sarah first of all I will say that Mccain gave a very good speech last night and for once it wasnt all about hatered. And as far as you are concerned, as you would say it was a task of God to Let Obama and Biden win this election. At least now the american people can rest in piece without having to worry that you might get in there.

C A   November 5th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I am stilll confused why some think that Palin excited the Republican base when she was first nominated. They did not know her. So what is it that excited the base?

Buchannan and others give her praise for exciting the base after her nomination. But I say it was not Palin who excited them. It could not have been. They knew nothing about her. It had to be something superficial like her gender or some other emotional need that was missing.

To say that Palin excited the base of the Republican party and enjoyed large crowds at her rallies may be true. But to say that she excited the base as a result of some legitimate reason as ability or experience or based on wha tshe believed is stretching it a bit don't you think. It would seem to me that rather than having something legitimate to excite the base, the base found a symbol that they needed to to excite themselves and what they believed and palin just went along for the ride.

Crystal   November 5th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I would like to comment on (Dave, Central Illinois), so you want to cancel BET, why because your upset that a Black man won the presidency? Get over it because a white man owns the station.

Any way, Sarah was a joke from the beginning. McCain tried to make woman vote for him but, what he does not know about woman is that we are very particular about the people we trust and believe in.

Hiliary did not get all those votes just becasue she was a woman.

There is one thing no matter what, no one can take from you; your integrity. Only YOU can give it way.

If Palin ever had any integrity she willingly gave it up for her personal ambitions. Her supporters and she can blame how they wish, but in the final accounting it was Palin who undid Palin.

I was proud to have voted for Obama and even more proud after listening to his speech last night. I especially liked the inclusiveness of his language and the fact that he promised to listen to all the people who did not vote for him. Personally, I think Palin was a poor pick for VP and I strongly disagree with many things she said, including her inference that American citizens who are not republicans are not "pro-American". However, I encourage anyone who is reading these comments to listen to (President) Obama's speech and think about his words before writing these hateful comments about McCain or Palin. It will not help Obama to use divisive language about other American citizens, just because they felt strongly about a different political candidate.

I know a lot of people who voted for Obama largely because of the fact that McCain was 72 years old and Palin was one 72 year old heartbeat away from the Presidency. It was too big of a risk. The GOP kept pushing this argument that Palin was more experienced than Obama, but I'd rather put my vote towards a Harvard Law graduate who knows the US Constitution like the back of his hand than a woman who can't even tell a child what the Vice President really does. I don't think that Palin was by any means dumb, but she did lack a hunger for information. An inexperienced candidate should at least show that she's willing to learn new things if she wants the US citizens to take her seriously.

Sarah Palin should never have accepted the nomination. She had to have known how ill prepared she was. Her narrow view on America is beyond words.

She needs to learn to accept people not like her. She needs to understand that people who live in cities love America as much as those who don't. She needs to understand that the East Coast of America consists of people who families helped to shape this great country and take great pride in that fact. She needs to learn not to be mean spirited.

She may have a following in the far right of the republican party but this repubican has no use for her. Her intolerance is intolerable to me. Good bye and good riddance...

Correction. The media caused Palin to be a liability for McCain, she was a benefit before the sabotage.

Shame on you CNN.. You are relentless on your efforts to hurt Sara Palin. We will never watch CNN again.

Abigail   November 5th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I am not, nor was I a Sarah Palin fan, but let's face it, she was put in an untenable position for which she was totally out of her league. She should have been smart enough to know that, but obviously has an unfounded confidence in her ability, and therefore failed to realize the full level of her incompetence.

McCain's poor judgment in selecting her was a gamble; but then, he is known to be a gambler. This time, he made the wrong choice. I think if he had made a different choice the race would have been a lot closer.

Stop hammering Sarah. She needs to go home and take care of her family – and Alaska.

No Hillary = No Obama

Why are you still bitter about Hillary. She lost, dont blame Obama, blame the DNC. They decided on which delegates would be seated. I hate women who think that just because you wear a skirt that I as a woman should vote for you. I voted for the person who i thought had the best interest of the country and our views at heart. What makes Hillary so experienced, ok she's been a senator for 8 yrs, so what!! Why because she was the WIFE of a former President? Everyone thought that if she got elected that Bill would secretly run things. Dont you want to move past all of the Clinton/Bush days? grow up and get a life!1

No other person in politics anywhere in this world made my skin crawl
more than this woman. That being said, you have to ask:Was she the only person who wanted the job?It was going to be a tough year for the
GOP no matter who was on the ticket and you have to wonder if anyone with their sights set on the future wanted to sacrifice those
aspirations for what was going to inevitably be a lost cause. She came out of the gate and energized the core of the party but I think as time went on,it became fairly apparent that she was completely unqualified
to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.Does she have a future in national politics?Probably. Will she be successful?I gather not so much, but she cannot be counted out.No matter how much that appeals to me.

JAD-Ohio   November 5th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Well, I for one was leaning towards McCain prior to the Palin pick. If he'd picked Romney or Huckabee, the tone of the campaign would have been much different, and McCain may have gotten my vote. But, once Palin came on board, and the divisiveness and hateful rhetoric began, I was proud to switch my allegiance to our new President. btw, I am a white 50 year old conservative affluent Republican who likely may see some tax increases under President Obamas plan, but I'm willing to sacrifice for the good of the country and those less fortunate than I.

Scott   November 5th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

One thing I would like to say. I do not blame Bush, republicans, or the Democrats for the mess that this country is in. I blame all of us. Four years ago we had the choice to get rid if Bush, and we did not, We gave him four more years to screw this country. Back then the war was dragging the country down.

FreeNLovIt   November 5th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Tim   November 5th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I voted for Obama and am very happy he won. I blame John McCain, not Sarah Palin for this loss. Instead of wasting the time during the tough fight between Clinton and Obama, he should have been solidifiing his base. His pick of Sarah Palin was a short term fix to a long term problem.

Tired of W, OH   November 5th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

JC Cole, it's people like you that I'm going to miss the least from this election. You take a false story like Obama's birth certificate (which has been verified repeatedly by Factcheck.org and others) and wrap yourself in it like a coat to disguise the real reason you don't like Obama: Prejudice. Racial or otherwise.

The bottom line is this: It's fine if you oppose someone based on facts, such as voting record, liberal views, etc. But when you base your dislike for someone on easily disproven lies, it's just a mask for personal prejudices.

Maybe a few years of President Obama will help to persuade a few people like you.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   November 5th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

A drag on the McCain ticket? How observant. Palin turned out to not be the one to garner in Hillary's supporters afterall. First the governor says she is a "feminist" in one interview, then in another says she is not, clearly not being able to figure our who she really is. She said she was for "equal rights" but then denies women the "right" to choose. That's equal rights? Hardly. She is energy "smart", but the drill baby drill syndrom won't work for years anyway. She shoots wolves from a helicopter as sport? Hardly, the state law states you can't kill a wolve from a helicopter, but you can only wound them and then let them "run" till they drop from loss of blood, then you can land and finish them off. Real sporting isn't it. She says she is "saving the polar bears" but then lets hunters in to kill them for "sport trophys."
She may get into Washington in Jan 09 if Stevens get re-elected and then gets tossed out by the senate due to his felony conviction. Hell, anyone who wants to be a teacher will not get hired if there is a hint of a felony of any kind on their record. Why should Stevens have even been allowed to be on the ballot until he was cleared?

This is true, however she quickly hung her own self. Palin has absolutely no experience and was way too arrogant. I hope that she's not planning to run in 2012; that will only guarantee OBAMA another 4 years in office. Go away you "pit-bull with lipstick"! I don't have any harsh feelings towards John McCain but I think my feelings towards Sarah Palin will always be harsh. She made women everywhere look down-right stupid. She made us look as if we don't really have to have much of a brain but we can take our decent looks as well as our ability to think on our feet and make people believe that we know exactly what we're talking about. Sarah Palin never had ANY idea what she was talking about; she just had the ability (as most women do) to win an argument. Personally I hope that her political career is nearing the end.

Proud of OBAMA!!!

Obama was able to overcome the handicap he had due to race because of 8 years of George Bush, a faltering economy, McCain's pick of the grossly unqualified and unprepared Sarah Palin, and the truly vile, angry, ugly tone of the McCain campaign. Let's be honest, if Obama was a white guy named John Smith from Kansas, he would have won by 20 points.

As far as overcoming race, our collective biggotry has been on full display in this and many other blogs over the past year – and the world was watching. This is an added blemish on our reputation – like we need any more after 8 years of GWB and the neo-cons.

This is done. Today there is no Sarah Palin, no talk of 'birth certificates', the country has spoken loud and clear, we accept hope over fear. The challenge is upon us, we can keep the bitterness that drove us into this despair or we can reach out and say 'we both have ideas and opinions, and both have value, let's meet in the middle and go forward instead of sticking our heels into the ground and standing still'.

This is the American of the next century, and together all us, from the strongest liberal to the strongest conservative will walk together, because that is what America is, a nation of ideals and beleifs where we can disagree and not have our patriotism questioned. I am exhausted, but I feel a peace and calm I have not felt in a long time. I love this country, and I love all the different people who live in it whether I agree with them or not, because, like most of us, my family came from a country where you could not disagree, on a good year, you may be able to vote, and to speak out was to be jailed. So disagree that's what we are all about, but do it with respect, the time for hatred is over, from both sides.

I've supported Barack Obama since late 2007. However, had he lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton, I would have supported her as well. Had another Democrat won the nomination, I seriously would have had a hard time deciding between them and McCain if the VP selection was not taken into consideration. Throw Palin in the mix, and there would be no chance I'd consider the Republican ticket. Her views are too far to the right for my liking, she never impressed me as someone that could handle the Presidency they way Hillary Clinton did, and I found her manner of addressing sections of this country and issues to often be insulting.

Those of us who stood for civil rights, something your party has long ignored. Help the disabled children in your state get the services they need without traveling out of the state. Help to fund your special ed programs, that is if you have them. Help the parents in your state receive the appropriate services so their disabled children can have a chance at living independent lives and for gosh sakes at the very least fund your states special Olympics, someday your son will want to participate! You said you would be a friend to families with disabilities, why don't you start in your own state.

Winnie Hussein . . . in Montana   November 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

The man John McCain used to be allowed himself to be hijacked by the radical right, Sarah Palin's divisivness and hatred, and the bigotry of the old south. What McCain's supporters did and said under the guise of Christianity was appalling. As a devout and lifelong Christian, I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. Even last night, during his concession speech, his supporters just could not stop themselves from expressing their hatred. Those supporters scared me as a freedom loving, personal expression, personal relationship with God, freedom of religion loving American.

Palin energized this "base" with her outright lies and sarcasm and holier-than-thou attitude. I hope and pray that we NEVER have to hear from her again.

Please, McCain supporters, please realize that you did a formerly respectable man a great disservice – all in the name of bigotry and pseudo-christianity.

Had McCain made speeches during the campaign like his concession speech last night, the outcome might have been decidedly different. Had he not chosen a woman who managed to hurt his campaign far more than she helped it might have been different.

I personally think the correct candidate won. But, without the negative campaign ads, McCain could have beaten Obama by sticking to the issues and choosing a far more qualified Vice-Presidential candidate. You can read that as roughly three quarters of the United States.

Steve, New York, New York   November 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

It's over.

Palin simply didn't cut it – too many asinine comments about small towns vs. big cities, not to mention that she's WAY too far to the right (why should abortion be illegal in the case of rape? Rapists should be "incinerated" – such filthy people DO NOT DESERVE THE RIGHT TO REPRODUCE)!!!!

Vicky, DC   November 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Palin is the reason McCain lost. The interviews with Katie and the economy were tanking at the same time. The interviews are what did it. Analysis of Sarah Palin's "contribution" to Mr. McCain's defeat: this is a verdict on Intelligence over ignorance; Inclusiveness over divisiveness; Pragmatism over irrationality; Pride in American values over disdain for American values; Courage over fear; Grand vision over petty pettiness; Hope over despair; opitimism over fear mongering; global citizenship over Wasilla citizenship. Hope she runs in 2012. Thank you America for restoring mankind's faith in democracy.

Palin was a willing pon in the game of chess. McCain said to women everywhere that he has no respect for them when he made that choice, essentially thinking that women are mindless and would take any women for VP.

The only thing Palin did was polarize the nation. She was the most divisive political figure in the last 40 years. The hatred, racism, and religious fanatical rhetoric was enough to turn off even her own parties delegates. She is not a true representative of the Republican party. If the Republican party embraces her in the future they will be writing their own obituary.

Linda, NC   November 5th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

If I were Palin this is what I would do:

1. I have found out that selling my low IQ to the American people is not going to work.
2. In 4 years America will change for good and I wouldnt have many of my extremist supporters
3. Facing the media again and being prepared and good in foreign policy etc is not going to happen for me

So what I do is just join the Alaska Independence Party and try to become the President of Alaska... hehehehe

Dave, Central Illinois   November 5th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Keeping in tradition with what you left-wing loons have been donig for the last eight years – everything wrong that happens after Jan 20, 2009, will be Obama's fault. If there is a natural disaster, its his fault. If America is attacked again, its his fault. If the economy continues to slide, its his fault. If we loose the wars, its his fault. Now the shoe is on the other foot.
By the way, there is no longer any justification for the NAACP, BET, Congressional Black Caucus, National Negro College Fund, Affirmative Action, etc. Now that a black man has attained the highest office in the land, contueing these race-centered traditions is nothing but pure racism!

FreeNLovIt   November 5th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I am so thankful that our country will no longer buy into old time scare tactics in politics anymore. This is the dawning of a new day. Politicians need to be above reproach when running for office and have good character. Gov Palin represents the Good Old Boy Regime. I never understood why she would say she went up against the good old boys when her actions reflect she is a part of them. I am sure we will see her again on the National scene however I hope not for a very long time. By then I hope she will have grown up and learned how to respect people that look different from her.

I don't blame Palin, I blame McCain. He should have known better than to pick such an inexperienced and wholly uninterested candidated for Vice President. Palin demonstrated rather effectively that she neither had the knowledge of crucial things like the economy or foreign policy, but she also did not have an interest in those things. She was a cheap Dollar Store version of Cheney. The first real decision of a potential president and McCain chose her.

Now that your boy Obama is firmly entrenched, I see you are reporting far-reaching stories about Palin and her wardrobe and the story that she had issues with the McCain people and that "you will further investigate" that for your viewers.

I might suggest that the lack of proof of Obama's birth certificate is far more important but you and I both know that your "in-depth" reporting will continue to ignore this and concentrate on Sara's wardrobe. How about a story on Michelle's lobster and caviar $500 "snack" at the Waldorf?

You are amazing.

My Fellow Americans Two Great things on this glorious Historic Day

SARA PALIN GOING BACK TO ALASKA ON HER BROOM STICK!
JOE THE UNLICENSED PLUMBER GOING BACK TO A DEADBEAT NOBODY

OH HAPPY DAYS ARE HEAR AGAIN ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!

Ronald, MS   November 5th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Did Sarah really think she could be Vice President? She's not educated, but she could go back to school. Learn how to speak properly and take a crash course on civics, government, geography, etc.

grahame   November 5th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

With any luck within four years the American electorate will have become educated enough to see that this terrible woman is not interested in helping the USA with any problems it may have due to world events.
She is only interested in herself. This stupid moronic egomanic will say and do anything in order to advance her own private agenda.
As to the rabid right wing of the Republican party we can only hope that somewhere in her background someone discovers that she had an abortion.
Her stance against gay rights, Row and Wade etc; is well known. Her zenophobic approach to the constitution is laughable, and if she ever got any kind of power then it will be a return to the George Bush style of taking away personal rights and spying upon her perceived enemies.
If the Republicans ever want to gain power in Washington once more then don't touch this woman with a forty foot pole

Ken in NC   November 5th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I'm so glad she is gone. The sucker could not even congratulate President elect Obama on his win when she held her interview. I congratulate McCain for speaking for both of them. He had the knowledge to know that she didn't have it in her to congratulate.

Now she can go back to the frozen tundra of Alaska and watch out for Putin to "raise his head". This woman is an airhead. I'm glad to see her go.

Palin Helped   November 5th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I'm not sure where our author Pete gets to his conclusion that Palin hurt more than she helped. Both the pre-election polls and the exit polls show quite the opposite. Was she ever popular with Obama supporters ... no, of course not. Did they use her as a whipping post to try to tear down McCain ... yes, of course they did. But if you look at those voters who thought Palin was consideration in their decision ... she helped McCain by several percentage points. The only time McCain was able to close in on Obama during the campaign, was when she was announced.

I think most people forget that the country overall leans slightly right of center, and elections are all about getting you side energized and out to vote. Obama energized his side and out registered his side by 10 points ... that was the key.

obama 08-12   November 5th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

bye bye sarah go back to alaska,we won't miss you.

the beginning   November 5th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

she was NEVER QUALIFIED, this was a gimmick and it backfired, shame on mccain shame on palin, and shame on the republician party for letting them make a joke OUT OF THIS ELECTION, WHEN OUR COUNTRY IS HURTING SO BADLY. BARACK OBAMA SHOWED SO MUCH DIGNITY AND HONOR, THANK GOD FOR HIM, (PRESIDENT OBAMA.)

Jacqueline   November 5th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

The Governor represented the Bush Administration, and John Mc Cain picking her spoke volumes of who he was allowing to run his Presidency. If Mc Cain had been the same guy he was until 2004, I believe he would have been elected, but it was time for a change and Obama is intelligent, articulate, and encouraging in that he encourages all of us to take part in our Goverment. I believe that Michelle will be one of the best First Ladies and his family will be a long needed breath of fresh air.

I am proud of being a middle aged white woman who was also a single mom to a successful child when she was younger and I know that the Barack's maternal side must feel very proud. His father should still be apologetic for being absent and I hope absent fathers everywhere decide to make a change as well.

Amy   November 5th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Look at her face- she's literally looks like she is going to cry! I wish I could say that I feel sorry for her, but I can't. The lies that she has told about Obama were the most horrible lies I have ever witnessed any politician make, especially the horrible things she accused Obama of doing, like "palling around with terrorists." She's a liar and a hate monger! I simply cannot stand this woman!

I'm so happy she wasn't elected Vice President. God only knows what would have happened to our Country if she was elected...

So, yes, Sarah, God did do the "right thing." He sent you back to Alaska! Goodbye!!!!

Chris F.   November 5th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

What will the Rebulicans say next? " It's an Obamanation!!!" LOL!!!

mr g   November 5th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

GOOD BYE MOOSE KILLER return to the frozen tondra if they will even have you. And please do not even think about 2012,better to wait till 2024 after Chelsea wins with a black vice president.

Ben in San Diego   November 5th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Go home baracuda... you did a terrible diservice to our Country. What and ugly campaign... divide and conquer??? No... you LOST.

Time for a lesson here Sarah...

America judged Obama on the CONTENT of his CHARACTER... and he WON.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 5th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

SEXIST CNN – YOU AND OBAMA COST HILLARY CLINTON THE PRESIDENCY AND THE VICE PRESIDENCY. HISTORY, MY A___!

The Tax Payer Revolution begins NOW (Producers vs. Moochers and Looters)   November 5th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Peter Hamby: "Unfortunately for McCain, the Alaska governor hurt his presidential bid more than she helped."

What the hell are you talking about, Pete? She's the only reason why McCain did as WELL as he did. Those huge crowds at McCain/Palin rallies were HER CROWDS, not his.

To be honest, she's the only reason I bothered to vote for McCain... I mean, really, there was already ONE liberal on the ballot... did McCain think he could win by being "liberal-lite."

Go ahead, write her off. That won't come back to bite you in four years.

Like it or not hippies, conservatism wins every time it's tried. How about Republicans actually start trying it for a change?? Again, when there's already a liberal on the ballot, you don't win by being liberal-lite.

joe, Canada   November 5th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

that woman is too stupid. from the way she talks and some answers i had heard her gave to some questions, they r beyound me.

Cammi317   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

I might have felt sorry for her if not for the "palling around with terrorist" bit. She got a little too full of herself too fast and lost her way. A lesson learned...

Linda, NC   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Looks like McCain couldnt control his party, within a few weeks he had to run around trying to explain his own VP pick. I truly respect his great sacrifice for the nation but he is just a little old to be running for presidency. But for his age he really did a great job.

Well Obama might be an African American but in January he will be there President of the United States for all Americans. African Americans can be very proud of him and each and every american is proud of Obama. In these crazy times he strongly proved that by "being good", "being true", "being humble" we can achieve our dreams. Once again America has shown the world what 'Being American' is all about.

FromTampa   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

As a republican, I do not see Palin as the next leader. Running Alaska is not like running the United States.

Troy B.   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Where is Sarah Palin anyway? Is she going to accept her defeat graciously or is she going to play the sore loser? It will be interesting to tell. Quite honestly, this woman will probably disappear from the limelight so fast her head will spin. I know the Palin fan club out their would like to see her run in 2012, but unless she can somehow appear knowledgeable and show that she can handle the heat, she is destined for an overwhelming defeat to someone like Mitt Romney. Who knows, had she not been tapped for this position, McCain might have won and by the time 2012 or 2016 rolled around, Palin might have been able to show some capability to the public.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? Now that you got "your man" Obama elected you say something positive about Palin? Hypocrite CNN. But this was to be expected. CNN began hijacking Hillary Clinton's nomination last February when it looked like she was on track to be our next President. Then you started promotionalizing Obama while making some of the most sexist, undercutting comments about Clinton and then Palin imaginable. And "your man" Obama chose to focus on getting himself elected, snubbing Hillary as the VP choice. Women lose again and I feel no joy in Obama's rigged victory.

Mike G   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

I'm so relieved that I don't have to hear her voice anytime soon. Thank you fellow americans!

big daddy   November 5th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

ALL SHE DID WAS BRING HATE INTO THIS COUNTRY...GO HOME !

Chris   November 5th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

To be honest, I would've been undecided if Palin didn't show up. She suddenly appeared like a bad virus.

What A Shame!   November 5th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Sarah will be back!

This election was bought and paid for; funded by BO-PRAH, for Obama.

A "Great" man (McCain) and a "Great" woman (Clinton), lost to the "celebrity" known as "that one."

In four years (or if Obama is not impeached), Sarah and Hillary will be back!

David   November 5th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

For McCain, there was always more room to the left than the right. By selecting Palin, McCain announced that he would look for votes in the shallow end of the pool, leaving the deeper waters for Obama.

MARISSA   November 5th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

BYE BYE SARAH HAPPY MOOSE HUNTING

Not My Back Porch   November 5th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Yup, yup! She was the "iceberg" that sank the "Titanic". You betcha!

Darrel from Denver   November 5th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

One more thought....I believe it was extremely telling that her request to speak at McCain's concession rally last night was denied by the campaign.

She was brought on board strictly to attempt to unite the base and to divide the public in a desparate attempt to steal victory from defeat.

It didn't work, clearly. While the base came through (roughly 45% of the total US vote being Republican base), the appeal to anything beyond that did not (only adding 1% additional popular vote).

In fact, she so polarized the electorate that they flocked in both popular vote and electoral vote to the other side.

Her wacky, out of touch, incredibly small (and unreal) belief system can now go back to the obscurity from which she rose.

Nice try, Republicans. But, you should never have blatantly exposed your true agenda. It cannot stand the light of day. It is too divisive, too harsh, and too restrictive to ever represent the majority of Americans.

California Gold   November 5th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

This Palin woman should quit politics and become a talk show or radio show host peddling her brand of Republican conservatism. This way she has an outlet, her followers have access and she can stay out of public office.

Independant Woman, Texas   November 5th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I think that Palin and MCain are not quite finished getting ALL that they DESERVE for the disgusting campaign that they decided to run.

What goes around comes around! The coming years will show if they can take what they dish out.

God has truly blessed America!

Mikey   November 5th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Can we please put to bed the myth of the "liberal media"?

Much of this media is controlled by giant corporations, such as GE, Disney, NewsCorp, and Viacom. Someone needs to explain why they think those entities have such a liberal bias. Is it their shareholders? Their Boards?

Could it be that they are just trying to boost ratings, so they take on the bias that maximizes their audience? If that is true, then isn't their "bias" simply a reflection of the viewing public at large? That would mean the viewpoint they take is centrist, not liberal.

Perhaps, if you see the vast majority of the media as "liberal", it is not that they are to the left – it may just look that way to you because you are far to the right.

Donny   November 5th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Hey Joe the plumber the GOP sprung a leak and needs fixing.

Glenn in California   November 5th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Thank God that we as a country sent her packing back to Wasilla. What a disaster it would have been for our country to have her as 2nd in command.

Her 15 minutes of fame have now come and gone. In the end, Joe the Plumber wound up being more qualified than her.

Wally©   November 5th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

It's time for her to do some soulsearching...

Re-invent herself !!!

Lay low for at least 4 years while getting up to speed on world-politics...

Then...perhaps she could play a significant role in American politics...

But then she'll be up against a real giant....Hillary !!!!

Lucy Windy Chicago, IL   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

I hope the Republicans use the next 4 years to educate Sarah Palin if I am going to have to hear from her again. They also need to work with her on content and language choice. Her performance was disgraceful to well educated, smart women of the US.

DON'T CRY SARAH. HA HA   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

This is the price you pay for being a dummy. Now go back to Alaska and your igloo. How sweeeeeeee!!!!

Independent white female patriotic voter   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Palin rallied the base of the republican party but she also distanced the Independents that Mccain had counted on in previous elections. Mccain made a very poor cchoice going with Palin. There many others that he could have picked to bring the base together and still get some, not all, but some Indpendents. He also made a huge mistake going with Palin who was obviously inexperienced on the national security and foreign affairs topics when he was running mostly on experience. Palin was not the woman that examplifies the American woman today. She is much too far to the right for women in America!

Liberated!   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Take gramps back to the retirement village, and get your racist, negative, moose stew eating butt back to Wasilla....oh, make sure you leave the $150K clothes that we paid for behind!

suzanne, western NY   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

I did not belive at any time that Sarh Palin was ready or capable of being the VP or President of the USA. Additionally, though she may have rallied the base as an educated woman of the same age she did not represent me or any of my firends.
Having said this I belive she was thrust upon the National stage during one of the most difficult political times in our nation. I hope that she will be able to go back to Alaska and return to the Governors role and her family.
As much as I do not support her, as Obama said we need to come together to rebuild this nation. Why not start today.

Hopeful for Tomorrow   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Palin was a gamble. The thing about gambling is you have to know when you've got a raw deal and wait for the next round to start again.

Democrat in ARIZONA   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

A GOP trainwreck for sure. I dont think she attracts the Republican moderates. She is a hard sell for republicans I think.

Christine CT   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

I actually feel a little sorry for her. Issues and policies aside, she was by no means ready or prepared for the beating she took by the media and the two parties. Watching her last night almost makes you forget her sophomoric rhetorical skills and stump speeches-

Biff   November 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Congratulations, President Elect Obama.

Congratulations, America

leon   November 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

she fooled McCain but not the american people.

Sylvia   November 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

She was treated so wrong and cruely...it was a disgrace. We may have advanced toward the treatment of Afican-Americans but we have placed ourselves so far backward toward the treatment of WOMEN. One should not be sacraficed in favor of the other. ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL....unless you are a WOman

Accountability   November 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Goodbye Sarah!

use your head   November 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

So! now she has been sent packing. The good thing is other women will also step up, and challange her when she decides to run, hopefully today marks the end of political pandering.

Virginia (from Maryland)   November 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I hope she remembers to get the clothes dry cleaned before she gives them to charity. Bye Sarah, have a nice trip back to Alaska.

Red, Red WHINE!!   November 5th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Palin is a disgrace to the whole human species. Let us not hate women simply because she is one of them.

Go home   November 5th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Good riddance Caribou Barbie. I hope a wolf eats you in the night. Go secede and run Alaska into the ground. I never want to see or hear you again.

chris24   November 5th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

She represents the old school attack politics of the
Republican party that needs total change.

People will remember her as an attack dog that
brought down McCain's campaign.

Hopefully, we have seen the last of her.

Dan   November 5th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Thank God we don't have to listen to her any more. Go back to Alaska and stay there.

I definitely believe McCain/Romney, given the economic turmoil, would have been much more competitive.

In the end, Obama would have won anyway. Speaking of which, where are all those bitter Hillary supporters who said Obama would never win? Eating a little humble pie isn't such a bad thing. Come out and be counted you cowards.

Whatever   November 5th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Who cares. She couldn't even congratulate President-Elect Obama during her interview. She is a bitter woman. Poor thing. That's okay. She'll have to move to Russia since it's so close so Obama won't be her President.

Darrel from Denver   November 5th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Her selection was a boon in that it brought to light the true values and the true agenda of the hijacked Republican party.

My view is that the election was as much a referendum on the current Republican party, represented by Palin, as it was a referendum for change.

Palin will now slip back into the obscurity from which she emerged briefly to torch decorum, capability, and civility.

Joe The Engineer   November 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

I hated this women from day one, but now I feel so sorry for her. Its not her fault being uninformed on foreign policy, and other issues, there are many americans who are like her. Its McCain fault that he brought her into the lime light and he is responsible for the humiliation she faced.

Sorry Sarah, but next time come up with some knowledge on issues and dont bad mouth your opponent.

Good Luck.

Paul DObro   November 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Can she EVER accept any responsibility for anything she has done? I am SO sick of hearing her deny EVERYTHING negitive about her. And the blaming the MEDIA for being the problem.

Grow up. Say "you betcha' I made a couple of mistakes, I learn from them, and it will make be a better person".

She has ALOT to learn about politics.

John   November 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Don't worry about her. She played her role and put on a good show as did McCain. Obama is backed by some heavy-hitters. People with enough power to destroy an economy..let those that have ears to hear take heed

Steve   November 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I am a republican and even I think Palin is a total moron and completely unqualified to hold any cabinet level position let alone the presidency. How Alaska voted her governor or how McCain picked this woman is beyond me. She has set back women in politics another 20 years.

Nick   November 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I'm sorry but Palin was a horrible pick for VP. She's simply not qualified and not up to par to be one heart beat away from the presidency. McCain should have picked Romney or Ridge.

Carrie Goodeagle Hayden, Idaho   November 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Sarah mean spirited person – go home

mike   November 5th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Leave Palin alone. Media has done enough damage to Hillary and Palin.

Gary, Detroit   November 5th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

And now Betty Boop goes back to Alaska where she belongs !

Laverne   November 5th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

At the end of the day, McCain needed more than just the base. I wonder how things would have turned out if he had chosen someone else???????? Guess we will never know.
