Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she is 'proud' of Obama's victory.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced Wednesday that the Department of State "will do everything we can" to ensure a smooth transition to President-elect Barack Obama.

Watch: Obama 'inspirational,' Rice says

While noting that Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain was "gracious" in his defeat, Rice said, "On a personal note, as an African-American, I am especially proud because this is a country that's been through long journey in overcoming wounds, and making race not the factor in our lives.

"That work is not done, but yesterday was obviously an extraordinary step forward."

This is a comment back to E. you can say all you want that Obama did not get elected be cause of the color of his skin. I do know that a lot of people did vote for him just for that very reason and not for the fact of the issues he wants to bring forward. You can keep living a life of denial all you want. I am glad the history books will reflect that America has elected their first African American President. However he is not the greatest person that will offer change equal to everyone’s satisfaction. All I can say is dig deep into your pockets the next four years.

Gays for Obama   November 5th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

New Day, America!! Let's not mess this up. Let's stand behind our new president. Let's show the world that we have finally put hatred behind. Let's help our new president regain our rightful place in this world. We have already shown that we are ready, so let's do it. We love you, President Obama and the world will love you, too.

All I have to say is "NO MORE EXCUSES" for African Americans.

If you think this means that everything is better and that discrimination is a thing of the past, you need to think again. Obama's way of dealing with this is to try to create equal opportunities. This means ensuring that everyone has access to a good education and that all who work hard and have the talent can go to college. It also means ensuring that discrimination based on race, color, etc is not tolerated.

Once we have created a level playing field where everyone has an (reasonably) equal chance, Afirmative Action can become a thing of the past. Personally, I would like to see any future Afirmative Action be based more on socio-ecomomic circumstances and not on race in particular.

Fixing our inner city and rural schools will be no easy task.

Sean   November 5th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

President Barack Hussein Obama. Obama..a true swahili name, a true african roots. Hussein an arabic name that scares rural ignorant backward americans. YOU YOUNG HATERS WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT BEING A REAL AMERICAN IS.YOU ALL HAD NOTHING BUT DISRESPECT TO MCCAIN AND PALIN THROUGH THIS WHOLE RACE. YOU GOT YOUR PRESIDENT NOW LETS SEE WHAT HE REALLY DOES FOR THIS COUNTRY. LIKE OBAMA SAID,IT TAKES EVERYONE TOGETHER. SO DO DISRESPECT BUSH EITHER. HE KEPT US SAFE FOR EIGHT YRS. OF ATTACKS. Rice understands what being American is all about but to some repuglinCONS in Minn. it's something else...

People of the 6th District of Minn: ARE YOU CRAZY?

You elected Bachmann again! Shame, SHAME!

Stop drinking the neocon kool-aid of "fear, smear, mock and LIE", the rest of America did.

In case you didn't get the memo – the "real" Americans think the "anti-American" rantings of Bachmann belong in the dust heap of fail ideas along with fascism, racism and McCarthyism (now-a-days known as Bachmannism)

Again, SHAME ON YOU 6th District voters. I'm sure you'll get the political hack you deserve with your votes...

Proud American   November 5th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I am a proud American that did in fact vote for Obama... I just hope that we can end the RACE card and move on.... I pray that All Americans voted for him for what he believes in and what he will bring to the table – not because he is black. That is a big fear of mine. Can this please quite down Jesse Jackson, Rev. Wright and all the others that keep bringing up the race card – it is finally time to put it to rest – America has spoken and we are moving on with an African-American President (remember he does have a white mother and grandparents...)-And is in fact AMERICAN!

Tarif   November 5th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Obama is the change needed in Washington. The American people have shown that they can look past race although obama did not win the majority of the white votes, however the statistics clearly show that the younger age groups are moving away from race as a factor in elections.

I feel sorry for McCain because Bush gave him a car without an engine and wheels and sent him off to race. McCain did not help his cause either because he choose a running mate who does not know anything. It would have been a scary situation had McCain won. Could you imagine her as President, God forbid anything happened to McCain.
It is truly a wonder she even became a governor .......but then again there's Bushy........in America anything can happen......

""Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side""I think it is sad that a large part of Obama's African American support voted only along racial lines and not his views.

Joe - NY   November 5th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

No need for excuses. I love in the best country in the world and take advatage of it's freedoms and liberties. Most Americans make excuses and refuse to live the dream and it's ashame. Getting checks from the government unfortunately won't be good enough, BUT I'm hopeful this election will inspire them to live the dream. It's too easy not to now, but like I said NO MORE EXCUSES

Is the African American community proud of the fact the Senator Obama is pro abortion and pro gay marraige?
I voted those issues because the morality of this country is what drives us.
Health care , the economy , the war etc.. will all work itself out through our democratic process and either candidate would have been good for that .
However, blatant rebellion against the will of God will be this country's ultimate demise.

Democrats are so easily pushed to hate. Condi Rice, an african american woman has worked hard in service to her country. Because she is a republican she is discounted as less than a person by the dems that blog here. Perhaps you should live the rhetoric you put forth!!!

I will not   November 5th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I and others will not get behind Obama if
-He refuses to acknowledge life begins at conception
-He increases my taxes to later give it to Americans that can do it on thier own, but refuse to
-He refuses to work with Conservatives (The heartland of America)
-He infuses any important choices with Black Liberation Theology
-He involves questionable people from his past
-He does not support Israel (in keeping it safe)
-He pulls our troops out of Iraq before stability has been achieved.

If McCain had picked Condi Rice as a runnning mate, probably he would have won. True, Palin is charismatic, attractive and has a following but she was a vapid, foolish, empty-headed creature. Most Americans were appalled to see her in a position of real responsibility. I feel sorry for McCain, who is an intelligent, articulate, honorable man but his mistakes were so basic and so many, alas, that he can only blame himself for his sounding defeat.

There is a reason there have been celebrations world wide, we the world needed this day for our generation and those after us to become dreamers again.
Today is a day I can truly, without hesitation say to my children that 'you can become and do anything you set your mind to'.
Thank you America and God bless President Obama.

June W   November 5th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I think America will be surprised at how inclusive President Obama will be when choosing his cabinet. If we trusted him to be our President, then we have to trust that he will choose on the basis of what he believes is right for America, what they can bring to the table that will be helpful, and not because of party their affiliation. I think government as we knew it under the Republicans is a thing of the past and a new era is about to begin.

It's interesting to me that after 8 years of supporting Bush's oppression of Black Americans (the trickle-down effect, the poor response to Katrina) Rice suddenly cares about the advancement of Black Americans. CNN should look at her actions in the past years and ask her: "where was her concern form African-American's then?"

Kris Jackson, North Grafton, MA   November 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Rice is one of the most brilliant people of her generation. However, her ego led her to sell out to the dark side. She supported the lies that brought us into the Iraq War, she supported the Bush "Doctrine" of threatening anyone who opposed us with military force, and, on a personal level, tried to roll over anyone who disagreed with her. She now has to go away for a while and think things over. She can still be redeemed, but she will probably never again have a prominent spot on the world stage.

Joe - NY   November 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

All I have to say is "NO MORE EXCUSES" for African Americans. No need for Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to step foot in the public eye. If African Americans who voted 98% for Obama can't get a wake up call from this historic election then basically there is no HOPE period. WAKE UP because your excuses have run it's course in American History. "Yes We Can" had better turn into "Yes We Will" in the next 4-8 years.

2pacolypse Now   November 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I must agree if McCain had of picked Rice, this race would have been dead even or in McCain's pocket. I think his pick of Sarah Palin along with the Wall Street collapse doomed him. That is one time where his "Maverick" style costed him dearly. Rice, Ridge or Romney could have changed his fortunes dramatically.

Congratulations to Barack Obama. It was a hard fought, well earned 21 months of campaigning against the Clintons, and the GOP. Now, it's time to get to work cuz lord knows our country needs working on.

Amber   November 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I'm scared stiff that the GOP will push Palin for 2012. Far better they choose Condi who's far superior to Palin in all ways (and I'm a Democrat, by the way). I'm also white but THAT would be an interesting race – and a long overdue one – black man vs. black woman for President!

I sincerely believe that the election of Obama-a change is going to take place not only in America, but throughout the world, because our nation showed the world what can happen when people work together and how it can transform people and everybody work for one cause of unity. We all realize that our country and other countries throughout the world have serious problems and they cannot be solved overnight. It's going to take time and perhaps Barack will not be able to do it all in four years, but he will make progress if we all work together. People want a change here and abroad. Judging from the foreign countries and their reactions to this election-they are ready for a change. My best wishes to Barack, Michelle and her family.

Today more than ever I am supremely upset that the American people can be so ignorant as to vote for a man like Obama.. who brings false hopes to young minds. For everyone who makes a decne tamount of money, enjoy it while it last because it wont last long. the only "Change" that will happen to this country is a "Divide" between us. We will now have worse times than ever. I am a Soldier in the United Sates Army who is in danger of losing the job i love due to the military being cut back 32%. is that really necessary in a time of crisis like we have now? I will never render a salute to a man that is not proud of his country or doesn't show the proper respect for the American Flag..especially one who will run it! The better man did not win the election, and now every ignorant soul who voted for him will be in denial within the upcoming few months to years

john   November 5th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Obama would be very very wise to keep her on in her current position. I would show the world we are still tough but fair and the US that he REALLY wants what is best for ALL, not just the DEMO Party.

Angela   November 5th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

If McCain had picked her instead of Palin, he might be the victor today. I'm glad Obama won but I'm sad McCain's choice of women wasn't a little more inspired.

Urojen   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Obama's victory signifies a movement,an awakening going back what this country truly stands for.It is a sure redefining moment. The country has been driven down the wrong path by a few who misttook our nationalism and patriotism to be an approval of arrogant isolationism. Thanks to the majority of smart and intelligent Americans we have put ourselves back on the path to be a part of the global progress and uphold principles where we will live and let live. There is no reason any one person should go without basic needs amidst plenty:food, shelter and health care.Yes ,we can!

CR in WI   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Ms. Rice did a poor job of understanding middle east issues prior to 9/11, and possibly her neglect allowed those attacks. That being said, she likely is now as knowlegable as anyone on the region. Her multiple trips to the region enow her with personal ties that can facilitate progress. She knows the players, she knows the issues, and to neglect that knowledge would be a step backward. I would not recommend keeping her on as secretary of state, but as a well paid consultant.

Yes we did!

frank   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Condi...part of the worst administration in history. Goodbye Condi...no job for you in this one. Maybe Uncle Dick will give you a job at Haliburton.

Condi Rocks   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Excellent and Gracious Comments.

Condi-Palin in 2012 !

I'm Glad we have this "race" thing behind us
and it is NOT a factor anymore...

Does that mean we can actually get rid of the "token" laws now?
and special benefits for "race" ?
Since we are ALL one Race Now...

But then the Jesse and Rev Wright would be out of Jobs if that happened...

CincyDarling   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Condi, thanks for being BIG ENOUGH to see the vision; it's the least you could do.

Howard   November 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

It confounds me that some people have labeled the President-elect as "untested" and "inexperienced." Barack Obama endured the longest and most grueling Presidential campaign in history, and emerged the landslide winner of the election. He won, in no small part, because he always kept a cool head whether he was ahead or behind, and regardless of how many were attacking his candidacy. He never stuck his foot in his mouth, and he and his family have suffered through some of the nastiest and slimiest comments made against them ever made in a Presidential campaign since the early 1800's.

It's over now, so let's all get behind Obama, just as all of us would have also been expected to get behind McCain had he won.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

This woman should go hide her head in shame and she would be lucky if she is not tried for war crimes.

ANTHULA   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Bless this country and all who voted whether gop or dem. now on to the hard work of cleaning up the mess of the last eight years.
bring the troops home as soon as feasible.

Tom   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

If the Republicans continue this Palin 2012 nonsense they will surely lose. As much as I disagree with her on policy, they should be thinking Condi 2016. She is brilliant, has experience, and has appeal to the middle amd across the aisle. Plus she represents the more rational part of the Republican party, not those wacky evangelicals. She just needs about 8 years to distance herself from Bush...

J.Gordon   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Our eight-year National fever has finally broken and now we can heal this great nation of ours.

I am giddy with happiness AND very much enjoying watching the neo-cons and right-wing republicans in their shock and despair. This narrow-minded minority has navigated at the helm for too long, nearly sinking the rest of us forever.

The Bush/Cheney Administration broke this country and ironically in their utter ignorance and debacle paved the way for this great moment in our nation's history.

Thank you America. AND thank you Barack Obama. My only wish is that your grandmother could have seen this day.

karen-phoenix   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

God Bless Obama/Biden and the USA!!!

phyllis   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

hold on to you purses and bill folds they will probably take them too
everybody just think they pay taxes not just wait somebody that was never proud to be American what is obama thinking now
we are in a sad state now everybody wearing black today (guess we shud be wearing white)

STR   November 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I never post on these things, but I have to say my peace on this issue. Now that we have moved beyond racism in this country (Hallelujah!), the next barrier to fall needs to be sexism. Seriously, every man and woman in America ought to be asking themselves why the two women candidates in this presidential race were treated so poorly. I am a registered Democrat and a lifelong feminist and I was appalled by the equal opportunity garbage that was heaped on both Clinton and Palin. It was outrageous and there is no excuse for it. My daughters have learned that should they enter the political arena they can expect to be unfairly attacked by the media, men, women, and members of their own party! Let’s think long and hard about those Sarah Palin “porn” jokes, HRC’s “shrillness”, Palin’s “Caribou Barbie” description. In Palin’s case, where was the defense from the feminist community? Are we really prepared to only support women who agree with us? That’s not how I define feminism. I disagreed with Palin on many, many issues (particularly social ones), but I still respect her right to disagree with me. Don’t get me wrong, I think Obama is an inspiration to us all. But let’s not forget that gender bias is still alive and well. Women earned the right to vote decades after African American men did…. Let’s hope it doesn’t take that long to elect a woman president.

ralph   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

How sad that some Americans cannot look past the colour of skin and see that Obama by defeating The Clinton machine was a wake up call for them to take him seriouly.

If Coddie had voted for McCain then what excuse would you think of next.

I guess Joe six pack would have been a better fit for President

As for the Bush in skirt and Black skin ...you only wish...stick to your day job.

Patrick   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Obama is already deliverying on his promise to bring all people together. During the campaign, some prominent Republicans endorsed his candidacy. Most Independents voted for him. He's a man who wants to bring a notable change to the American political history. Foreign leaders are rejoicing on Obama's victory.

GOP Lost   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

She could have made the GOP a winner if
McC ain chose her for his VP running mate versus Sarah Palin

tasmania   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

She is very smart, so by praising Obama she would like people to remember her as the first Africal American secretary of state, big deal. Good luck in advance for your book, which will be published in 2 years.

30-m-PA-voted McCain   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

I have a feeling many voted for Obama just because they wanted to witness an historic event. If so, as a result of this kind of decision making, I believe the next 4 years will be historic, but I'm not so sure it will be positive.

Frank   November 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

One good step crossing the color barrier. Another good step would be that ALL should unite as brothers

sabuc for Obama   November 5th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Graceful in defeat is about the only redeeming thing she can offer. Thanks Condi.

JB   November 5th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I am proud that we have gotten beyond race. I voted for the person right for the job, not the person my peers thought I should vote for.

Sam   November 5th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

No one would be happier than Rush Limbaugh...His job is secure for the next 4 years, at least, bashing the Dems, that he is so good at. He has an uncanny ability of connecting Dems to just about every problem in any remote corner of the world using his tortured logic.

ima   November 5th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I wish Marin luther King was alive to see his dream for ONE AMERICA come true.

walterl   November 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

She won't get one of the welfare handouts though.....unlike a lot of other jokers who think the new pseudo-socialism will pay their freakin' bills~

Faith, hope and charity   November 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

To those who are still chewing those sour grapes, it is time to throw them out and help Obama rebuild this country. Someone had the audicity to say that Obama will ruin the country as if it is not already in tatters.

mama4obama   November 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Every American should be proud. America is finally growing up. We have spoken and have said enough is enough. It is our time to step up to the plate and hit it out of the park. Those who have been filled with hope will far outweight the negativity of the nonbelievers.

I was truly overwhelmed with happiness as Obama was elected POTUS. I was part of this movement and will remember it for the rest of my life.

Joe in Austin   November 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

But when Michelle Obama was proud to see racial divisions overcome, that somehow was unamerican.

Lady LIz   November 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's intelligence and ability has made a significant contribution towards eliminating race as a factor. Although, I am definitely not a fan of the Bush administration, I do have a great deal of respect for Ms Rice. I think Obama would be wise to find a place for her in his administration.

rharris   November 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

"always the smartest mind within the current government" - not saying much if you include "insight and sensitivity" as part of being "smart" -- IQ, probably high, but then again same for Cheney and Rove - it's just not enough.

Nina in Orlando   November 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I wish we knew who she voted for.

Jos/TN   November 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

well said,

So typical of Condi...never go out a limb. Does this woman STAND for anything??

Jos/TN   November 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

President elect Obama's rallies were more represenative of the true America that i see daily, God Bless America/God Bless The World, inclusive

Shari, NY   November 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Condi, you have a lot of talent but you got caught up with the wrong crowd. The fly on the wall must have seen you voting for That One.

Bob Dog   November 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Her comments are worthy of analysis and contemplation for many reasons.

Including my belief that had she accepted McCain's offer to be his running mate, he might have won.

al ohio   November 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Condoleezza Rice, It would sure be nice to keep you around in some capacity under the Obama presidency. We are all proud.

the beginning   November 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

AMERICA IS FINALLY UNITED, CONDOLEEZZA, WHO KNOWS YOU COULD BE THE FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT IN 12 YEARS, BLESS THIS NATION, BLESS BARACK OBAMA.

Seattle Sue   November 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Bye Condi, go back and take the Mac with you. You betcha

The Lady   November 5th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I am so proud of all us for getting out there and making this happen.

Thank you, Thank you America.

Carl from MI   November 5th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I guess all those bloggers on here that kept blasting Obama should now ALSO state that they 'will do everything we can' to ensure a smooth transition to President-elect Barack Obama.

Anything else would be UNPATRIOTIC... AND AS A REPUBLICAN, YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO APPEAR TO LOOK UNPATRIOTIC WOULD YOU?

THANK YOU AMERICA... FOR WAKING UP AND VOTING SMART!!

Bitter in Texas   November 5th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Yes, it's just the first step of many more that will hopefully come. Let's us put away our hurt feelings and work for a United States of America.

E.   November 5th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I voted for Barack Obama as a man, not as an African American man, but because of what he stands for and the integrity he has shown since being nominated by the Democratic party. I think that for All African Americans to be proud of him because they have the same skin color is not looking at the man and his ideals and his hopes for ALL Americans. Please spare me another comment of how proud African Americans are of this country's new President. Let him stand on his own as a man as we have all of our previous presidents. The color of his skin is not what got him elected, nor will it be what makes him a good or great president, only he can do that with the support of the people – ALL of the people.

TangoDancer   November 5th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Senator Obama -

I've been a fervent supporter of you. I must admit though that I have an incredible amount of respect for Ms. Rice. Very few human beings on this planet have the intellectual prowess that she has. I think that it would be a mistake to not allow her to stay in your administration. Undoubtedly, there are many in the Dem party who think differently – but so what. Ms. Rice is outstanding in what she does and can bring an incredible amount of talent to your new administration. I humbly request that you at least consider the possibility of allowing Ms. Rice to stay on board – provided that she would be willing to do so.

marianna   November 5th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

It's so obvious who she, the proud Republican and Bush's major officer, voted for

sf   November 5th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Confirmation for me that she voted for Obama!

Obama4pres   November 5th, 2008 11:59 am ET

you get that rigth Condoleeza!

RH   November 5th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Thank goodness Obama IS relatively inexperienced and left-leaning. Otherwise, those who oppose him would've been deprived of their best excuses and a much clearer picture of the levels of racism in America would have been revealed for all to see. His name was a blessing on that front, as well.

FAYE, NV   November 5th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I would like to know who she voted for.

FAYE, NV   November 5th, 2008 11:58 am ET
