Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was among many world leaders to congratulate Obama.

(CNN) – World leaders rushed to congratulate Democrat Barack Obama on Wednesday following his historic win in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. The following are their statements on the president-elect.

Chinese President Hu Jintao:
"The Chinese government and I have always attached great importance to the Sino-U.S. relations. In the new historical period, I look forward to endeavor together with you ... to continue to strengthen the dialogue and communication between the two countries, to enhance mutual trust and cooperation, to push the Sino-U.S. constructive cooperation relations to a new level, in order to better benefit the two people and the peoples of the world."

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao:
"The good relationship between China and the United States is the shared hope of people of the two countries, it is also needed in the safeguarding of the peace, stability and prosperity of Asia-Pacific region and the world.

"... Through the common endeavor of both countries, the constructive cooperation relationship between China and the United States will definitely acquire new development."

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown:
"I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Barack Obama on winning the presidency of the United States. I would also like to pay tribute to Senator McCain who fought a good campaign and has shown the characteristic dignity that has marked a lifetime of service to his country.

"The relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom is vital to our prosperity and security. Barack Obama ran an inspirational campaign, energizing politics with his progressive values and his vision for the future. I know Barack Obama and we share many values. We both have determination to show that government can act to help people fairly through these difficult times facing the global economy. And I look forward to working extremely closely with him in the coming months and years."

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga:
"The significance of this victory will resonate with hundreds of millions of people around the world. It is indeed time for global renewal.

"The strong message of hope and a vision of a world united in dealing with global challenges delivered by the president-elect in his campaigns is admirable, timely and welcome. The perseverance and endurance that the president-elect has shown during his campaigns is an inspiration to the world.

"The people of Kenya wish the president-elect and the people of America every success in their endeavors in the years to come. There can be no doubt that America is indeed 'a nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. '"

German Chancellor Angela Merkel:
"My sincere congratulations on your historic victory in the presidential election.

"The world faces meaningful challenges at the start of your term in office. I'm convinced that through a close and trusting cooperation between the United States and Europe we will be able to confront new risks and challenges in a decisive manner and will be able to take advantage of the numerous opportunities that are opening up in our world. Rest assured that my government appreciates hugely the meaning and value of the trans-Atlantic relationship for our common future.

"I remember with pleasure our conversation during your visit to Germany last July and look forward to working together with you in the future."

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh:
"The Iraqi government has a true desire to work and cooperate with the elected president for the best interest of the two countries to spread security and ensure Iraq's full sovereignty in a way that this will guarantee the interest of Iraqi people."

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert:
"Once again, America has proven that it is, indeed, the greatest democracy and constitutes an example for all other democracies in the world. President-elect Obama has proven his leadership and his talents to the entire world.

"... The special Israel-U.S. relationship is based on shared values and interests and is characterized by ties of close cooperation. Israel and the United States have a common desire to advance peace and stability in the Middle East. We have no doubt that the special relations that prevail between the two countries will continue to strengthen during the Obama administration."

Israeli President Shimon Peres:
"It was an American election and a worldwide choice.

"... I want to congratulate the newly-elected president: young, fresh, promising, representing a change and introducing change. The changes that I can mention - it is an opportunity to escape the present world crisis and enter into a new era of cooperation, of productive economy and of human solidarity. In a way, it is an end of racism. There is no longer any way that any white man can claim superiority, nor any black person feel discrimination. We are the same people, and this election is a great statement to that effect.

"... I also have the utmost respect for the other candidate, John McCain, who fought with great courage and stamina.

"... When President Obama was here, he asked me what he can do for Israel. My answer was: Be a great president of the United States of America. If you will be a great president of the United States of America, you will have great promise for Israel as well, and for all of the region and for all of our neighbors. Nobody should look at whose side the president is on - he just has to be on the side of peace. And if he will be on the side of peace, peace will come closer and more possible."

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat:
Erakat said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas congratulates Obama.

"We think that America is united behind the two-state solution and we hope that President-elect Obama will continue the engagement immediately and that he will transfer the vision of two states from a vision to a realistic political track," Erakat said.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso:
"This is a time for a renewed commitment between Europe and the United States of America.

"I want to assure Senator Obama of the support of the European Commission and of my personal support in forging this renewed commitment to face together the many challenges ahead of us.

"We need to change the current crisis into a new opportunity. We need a new deal for a new world. I sincerely hope that with the leadership of President Obama, the United States of America will join forces with Europe to
drive this new deal. For the benefit of our societies, for the benefit of the world."

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana:
"I think like every election, it means renewal. The ticket on which Barack Obama has run, this ticket for change - change is what we need in the world today. Many problems we have on the table, and I very much hope that we'll be able to do it together - to find a solution to them together, between the European Union and the United States.

"... I would also like to say that it will not be enough to have the European Union and the United States together. The problems of today we'll need also to incorporate other main players. I think about China, I think about the organization like the African Union and many others.

"Therefore, we have a very important day, a historical day and hope very much that the Europeans will be together also to make the utmost of this important moment."

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh:
"I have great pleasure in conveying my heartiest congratulations on your election as the president of the United States. Your extraordinary journey to the White House will inspire people not only in your country but also around the world.

"The people of India and the United States are bound by their shared commitment to freedom, justice, pluralism, individual rights and democracy. These ideals provide a solid bedrock for friendship and strategic partnership between our two nations. We have strong ties between our peoples and I look forward to working with you to realize the enormous potential for cooperation that exists between India and the United States. Our two countries working together to address global issues and challenges will be an important factor for world peace, stability and progress."

Former South African President Nelson Mandela:
"Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.

"We note and applaud your commitment to supporting the cause of peace and security around the world. We trust that you will also make it the mission of your presidency to combat the scourge of poverty and disease everywhere.

"We wish you strength and fortitude in the challenging days and years that lie ahead. We are sure you will ultimately achieve your dream making the United States of America a full partner in a community of nations committed to peace and prosperity for all."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu:
"It's an epoch-making event filling the whole world with hope that change is possible. It is just tremendous; it is saying to people of color that for them, the sky is the limit.

"My heartiest congratulations go to Senator Barack Obama and his partner Senator Joe Biden on their victory.

"I also want to congratulate Senator John McCain for his gracious references to Senator Obama in his conceding speech.

"We have a new spring in our walk and our shoulders are straighter. It is almost as when Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa in 1994."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy:
"In choosing you, it's the choice for change, the opening up and the optimism of the American people. While the world is in turmoil and doubt, the American people, loyal to their values that have always been the American identity, forcefully expressed their faith in progress and the future.

"This message from the American people resonates well beyond your borders. In the moment where we must face together immense challenges, your election raises immense hope in France, in Europe, and beyond, throughout the world. This open America, united and strong, will show the way anew, with its partners, by the strength of its example and its adherence to its principles.

"France and Europe, which have always been connected to the United States by ties of history, values, and friendship, will draw a new energy from this to work with America at preserving world peace and stability."

Iran's Deputy Parliament Speaker Mohammad Hossein Abutorabifard:
"Obama can change the defeated Bush policies and in so doing can play an important role in the future relations between the U.S. and Asia and the Middle East.

"... If the United States takes into consideration the realities of the world and chooses suitable policies, America can play its (proper) role in the relations between the United States and the countries of the region and theworld of Islam."

"... It seems that this election has prepared the ground for a revision in the Democrats' and Obama's future policies of the United States."

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero:
Zapatero congratulated Obama for his "extraordinary election victory" and said it "opens the road of hope for the world in times of difficulty."

In a telegram sent to Obama, Zapatero wrote, "As prime minister of the government of Spain, I let you know of our desire to work together to search for opportunities and solutions to tackle the challenges we face.

"I am convinced, as you are, that dialogue and collaboration with governments and multilateral institutions is the best way to find the answers that we need."

Zimbabwe opposition party Movement for Democratic Change:
"Obama's victory is a victory of hope, faith, change, a restart, values and dreams which have underpinned our fight as a movement against dictatorship and the neo-fascism of Robert Mugabe.

"Obama's victory will hopefully usher in a departure from the politics of polarization, fear, unilateralism and arrogance that has defined the Bush doctrine in the last eight years. Indeed, we hope that Obama will open new avenues of dialogue of new interaction based on respect of all countries irrespective of the size of national budgets or the number of fighter jets owned.

"... We are mindful of the difficulties that lie ahead in Obama's path and the fact that this is no El Dorado, a construct that Obama himself acknowledges in his acceptance speech. Indeed it is a task that may take more than his two terms of office. Perhaps the greatest thing we have learnt from this victory is that democracy can work and that there is no alternative to the same.

"John McCain's speech was particularly humbling, instructive and inspiring. If in Africa, incumbents would accept defeat and would graciously depart from the seat of power, this would be a different continent, and indeed Zimbabwe would be a different place.

"For those of us who are still in the trenches, fighting for change and democracy across the entire African continent, this is our victory. One which for now we will savor and celebrate."

Democrats are well known for cutting the military back. This weakens the country not strengthen it. Many jobs will be lost for the faulty thought of saving on the budget. Credit is the real problem with this country. If everyone lived WITHIN their means then everyone would be better off. Getting into debt then squelching on that debt is the reason things are bad off. Companies are laying off because they are in heavy debt, instead of producing only what is needed they overproduce and cut their own necks. As a result our jobs in the process. The president can never change or affect this. The president is an almost powerless trophy title. We have to change our own selfish desires. Live within our means, will mean never going into debt. Yes, you wont have everything everyone else has, but that doesnt mean your life is worth any less. It just means you'll have to wait for what you want instead of getting that selfish instant gratification from credit.

Shame on the dictators around the world. All those who talk about change just like the president-elect should also change their ways and thinking. This is a great opportunity we cannot afford to miss, in order to transform our world for the better. Justice, peace and prosperity is possible. Obama's success is truly the success of millions in the uSA and the world yearning for JUSTICE. In this light, the words of Nelson Mandela, below, in his congratulatory message above, are the most pertinent to our real world:
"We note and applaud your commitment to supporting the cause of peace and security around the world. We trust that you will also make it the mission of your presidency to combat the scourge of poverty and disease everywhere."

Amazing, truly amazing... I am speechless at this point. All the effort, hard work and prayer that we all (Americans) put in to help elect Barack Obama, the sacrifices both he and his family made- all for the betterment of our Country- I take Pride in our choice of President Barack Obama, and we can now lift our heads once again out of the shaddows of Shame that Bush had us in- and once again become a great beacon to the world!
And to finally put an end to the dirty political tricks and to prove they will no longer work- we will no longer be bamboozled (in the words of President Obama), the Republican party needs to take a hard look at this and see- we stood up and were heard- and what we said was... No More Hatred!

The common thread is that the world is looking for something new from the United States to face up to new world challenges : not more of the failed Bush policies: bullying, name calling, unilateralism, the Bush Doctrine, not engaging the opponents on a particular issue ( whether they are historical allies in the context of an honest disagreement or potential regional or global rivals ) ... there is hope for change with Obama, slow steady change... giving new direction to the american ship of state is like turning around a cruise ship... but Obama promises something new whereas McCain simply did not. I congratulate the citizens of the United States on their selection. My only disappointment as a non- american is the popular vote received by the republicans; did half the americans really think McCain deserved a shot ? Yikes.

This is a call to all believers to do as the scripture instructs us to, "pray for them that have rule over you so that you may live in peace." The is an enormous task and it will take daily supplications to the Almighty to guide and direct this nation in His path. May we all find our way back to the instructions, his Torah, and so find peace.

We have a new President. We have new found hope for the future of our country.

The first Presidential election I was able to vote in was for JFK. He inspiried us to rise to new heights. He told us we were going to the moon, we did. He told us we could help the world, and thousands signed up for the Peace Corps.

He told us "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". It was our battle cry.

Now I've seen the rise of another JFK. I never thought to see someone whom I have this admiration for again after JFK and RFK were taken from us.
But once again, hope springs up, and I am hopeful that the new generation of Americans can take up the burden that we older folks now lay down...

That is perfect, we have Iran congratulating our president. I do not percieve weakness in our new president, and if Iran would like to continue to be a soveriegn nation, it ought to think about changes its own policies. In general the bigger threat of the two Iraq, and Iran, has always been the latter. I could certianly get behind the idea of overthrowing their govt. and exploiting their natural resources!

The one thing we learned in this election cycle:

Money can buy anything. From the local to national stage money was the biggest winner! Whatever issue or candidate could out spend the other prevailed in almost every race and issue on the ballot. The public found out that the television news personnel media can be bought. Individual news reporters can be bought. Print writers can be bought. Oh how far we have fallen as a republic actually relying on paid-for-media to determine the outcome of our future instead of taking some time and reading the fine print.

Congratulations to Barack Obama for a great win! It is obvious from the good wishes conveyed by world leaders that Obama has a broad worldview and experience enough to interact and represent the U.S. well. Obama did not get into the mudslinging like his opponent, and it seems that his rising above it was vindicated by his win. Neither Hillary Clinton or John McCain/Sarah Palin and their campaigns won by getting down and dirty. Perhaps there is some hope now that decency and goodness can once again return to our country. That is part of the hope that Obama brings.

There is no price you can pay for good will, you earn it.. Mr. Obama has layed the groundowrk for what maybe and what will be if the world unites against terror, poverty and devisiveness. As a McCain supporter, I could not help but be excited as unlike many voters I saw promise in both the candidates amd it has always felt like a victory to me just to break free of the past. While Presdient Bush has done an admirable job of keeping us safe and he alone is not responsible for all of our woes as all politics is a continum and the next President relys on the work of the last, we can now begin the needed healing of a country which has become an orphan of self endeavor . Lets hope and pray for peace, love and prosperity in the years to come.

This is a clear signal to all...the world, for the most part, has accepted even invited the idea of change. Our own country has sent and revieved the message that a closed mind is not acceptable. While the electoral college seemed close to a landslide, by no means is it a landslide popularly (52% while noteworthy is not a vast majority). We must recognize that there is a full spectrum of needs in our great country. While this is a great day for America and indeed the world, cooperation and focus is an essential need to make this country and the entire world better for having Barack Obama as the President of the United States of America.

This election has been an epic journey between the Old "status quo" and the New Vision of America. Barack Obama has shown his resilience and intellectual superiority needed in American leadership at this critical time. America has shown that we no longer want limited ideas that cater to the belief that the majority must beg for scraps from the table of the financial elite. We are rejecting the days of corporate interest over Citizen's social and economic conerns. We will no longer accept the ideas that one group is more "American" than another. The world was watching this election because the decisions made here have enormous impact on the global stage. This is the dawning of a new age where the well being of every man, women and child can participate in creating a world of new Ideas and ingenuity that are in harmony with man and the planet.

I pray that we as Americans will be at peace with this historical victory and that all differences be put aside in effort to unite as a people, in effort to heal from the past eight years of a failed government.

As an Independent voter, I think the correct decision was made last night for our country. I wish there would be one thing the Republicans would take from this and that is this:

The United States is a diverse and intelligent nation of people that cannot be frightened into chosing their leaders. The RNC and McCain-Palin ticket used shameful scare tactics and negative propoganda to appeal to those voters with the least amount of education and exposure. They used fear to try and stoke deep seated anger and hostilities to rally ONE group of voters; the "Joe Six Packs" and "Joe the Plumbers".

The American people are more than that. We are Black, White, Brown, Yellow and Red. We are Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, Agnostic, and even Atheist. We are Conservative, Liberal, Moderate and Independent. The President has to appeal to EVERYONE.

Somewhere along the way, Republicans lost sight of this.
This Presidential election says to the world that All Men Are Created Equal, indeed. No more excuses, America. Live up to your God given potential. let's now rally together as ONe Nation Under God and make this world a better place.

God Bless America. I love this country.

It is now a fact.....America is the truest land of opportunity! ...where else on earth, would one's courage, noble vision, fortitude and perseverance yield fruition and be given a chance to express and excel regardless of one's creed, color or ethnicity!.

The country is a shinning example of what humanity should aspire to be despite it all shortcomings. Dr. Martin Luther King will be "tickled pink" where ever he may be today!

I believe Obama will try to become the greatest President ever. I voted for him for many reasons. I am a white Republican (recently changed to being a democrat because of the GOP "fear" tactics) in the Panhandle that truly appreciates his message of bringing hope again to Americans instread of fear.

I believe World leaders will see a strength and intellegence they will respect and listen to. It was a great worry of what the McCain/Palin radical views overseas would do to us with terriorism. I feel much, much safer with Obama on foreign affairs.

Economically, we had to have Obamas policies to survive the next four years. Those are the facts and that's why he won.

Of course, I am VERY happy that Obama won, and I look forward to the changes coming to this great country.

HOWEVER, there is another story yet to be discussed... VOTER TURNOUT.

I worked the polls yesterday, and even in our relatively small residential precinct here in Phoenix... we saw a greater than 50% turnout at the polls. AMAZING... and what was equally, if not more amazing, was the number of early ballots that were mailed in!

And I want to congratulate the youth of this country – I saw more 18 year old voters than I've EVER seen or even heard about yesterday! It was so heart warming to see entire families come in simply to watch their young son or daughter cast their first vote.

America – you've inspired me once again.

Although, if not for these 8 years of disasterous leadership, there would be no President Obama. So, if we had it to do over again, is President Obama worth the trillions of dollars in deficeit, the misgivings about our government, the secrecy, the man sized safe in Cheney's office?

First off let me start by saying congratulations America on a job well done. Not only have we made history, we have overcome. I would normally not comment on these sites but the first comment from Marge struck me as odd, who said that there is a belief that Obama won this election by himself, it took a nation to get him into the oval office and for that I am grateful. As should you be. And as far as Bush how dare you state that the Republicans have only him to blame, I beg to differ they have themselves to blame as well for continuing to vote for someone who was for himself and his family for day one. Marge, I honestly hope that you are FOR change and not against it, because without change we can NOT move forward and as Obama has so graciously reminded us.....YES WE CAN......and I'd like to add YES WE DID !!!!!!

I like how god apparently voted Democratic this year? From all the religious here in the bible belt, at least this area, they're all feeling forsaken by god because they were just sure their prayers and needs of not having a heathen Muslim foreign (half-)black man become president.

Thank you, vote count, for blessing us with a victory from Obama. You, vote count, and you alone have decided and personally effected the world we live in. All praise Vote Count and in all of his glory and holiness.

The United States of America as we knew it yesterday will no longer exist. We are now free to throw out the constitution and rule the country with compasion and liberalism. Capitalism and the free market are dead. It's been a long time coming but we finally got here.

America has always preached that it is "the land of the free" while racism has run wild and freedom of speech has been suppressed for most of its history. With Barack Obama as President we can now hope that America will foster the freedom it has always laid claim to.

In the rise and fall of nations, I had thought that the US had turned a corner during Mr George W Bush's tenure, after reaching its zenith during Mr Bill Clinton's reign. Now it seems and I truly hope that the with Mr Obama's win, the fall is reversible.

With 8 years of George W. Bush and that he alienated the whole world. 70 countries were endorsing Barack Obama. He is our 44th President of the United States. We all will see what he will do for this Country.

Obama did inspire alot of people...He won the highest office in the nation, and for an African-American man who started out as a Community Organizer it proves that anyone can be President.

May you be blessed with good health and do the impossable, Unite the United States and the world.

Last night, Obama received a phone call from Canada's PM Harper. No mention of it here. Kind of strange given that Canada is the United States' largest trading partner. More American jobs rely on continued strong trade with Canada than with any other nation, and Canada is currently providing half of the US's supply of oil. One would think that the details of what Canada's Prime Minister had to say to Obama would merit at least a sentence or two?

A concern seemingly overlooked, it does not matter your chosen party or your intake of this monumental moment in history. Do not be mislead ny the powers that be. If we surrender our military at this juncture in Iraq, we nail our coffin shut. If we allow our arms to be taken from us, we are on our knees. I support our country in it unified movement but will not concede our military deaths to be in vain and will not allow my loved ones to be unarmed in the time that we live in. I pray that Obama is ready for this task as he seems to have less experience in foreign policy and people around me do not feel as secure now.

The people of America have once again showed great courage in electing Barack Obama President of the the United States of America. I have had great faith in the young man I heard speak at the DNC in 2004. He has not changed his stance on what he believes the American people want, and he will truly be a great great President. I am so very very proud of the American people for ignoring the slurs, lies and deceit of this very shameful campaign. I am so very proud of our young people for help making this election come true. It was a wonderful sight to watch blacks, whites, all nationalities on TV come together as one, it was a truly inspiring moment I will always cherish. Okay America, lets pull up our sleeves and help our neighbors and this country to move into the 21st Century with Barack Obabma!

Even at my age the strength of role models cannot be overestimated. Barack Obama has created a new model for African-Americans and the world. Truly no man or woman has any excuse but to achieve his or her dreams to the fullest. When "that One" went to Berlin, he knew what most of us in our minds understand. We need the world with us. We no longer have the SUPER-power capabilities to be all things to all people (countries). Especially after Preisdnet Bush and the Republican Congress for 6 of the last 8 years, bankrupted us financially. As well, we are morally bankrupt in the eyes of many citizens of the world.

You may say, we don't need those other people.
I would simply say, especially for the Chinese, we need their money and their investments to keep us aflota. If the Chinese pulled their money, we could probably be bought by the Saudi's. Perish the thought of that.

This guy is brilliant and he sees things that are sometimes dismissed. Let's pray that goodwill from other countries last throughout his terms as President.

This is only the second time in my life I felt I was in the presence of greatness. The first was watching the great Secretariat win the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. The second was watching Barack Obama sweep this country and finally head us in the right direction.

With this defining moment in the history of mankind, the light held high by the lovely Lady Liberty shines brighter than ever. This proves that with a will there is a way. WIth hope there is promise. With dreams do come reality. The only requirement is effort.

What I would like to see more than anything is that this 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, holds onto his cloud of greatness and uses it to further peace, prosperity, and the rights of all humans in this country and the world. We are all our brother's keeper. We all bleed the same blood. Gay, Straight, White, Black, disabled, non-disabled: we should all be given the same basic rights granted under the wonderful document that defined this great country.

Good luck Barack and God Bless America!

What's done is done, and I am very impressed with the response from world leaders. I'm glad Obama has already raised the credibility of America, and I now hope he can continue to make good on his promises and bring prosperity to America in the next four years.

I breathe a sigh of relief and am filled with hope to see the outcome of this election. I am so proud that Americans have shown that they can come together to do the right thing! Every one of us must now roll up our sleeves and get behind Mr. Obama to help him do the job he must do. We voted our support of his vision, creating this time for change and now we must not abandon him to do it alone. President Obama and citizens together, working side by side, will achieve what is best for our nation and for the world. Now we must get in the trenches with him – put our shoulders to the wheel and fearlessly work hard to fulfill our commitment to a future of promise – not just for the children of America, but for all the world's young, the next generations to carry the dream of peace, global community and prosperity forward.
