Obama launches official transition Web site

Barack Obama launched an official government Web site Thursday.

(CNN) – Barack Obama launched the official government Web site for the presidential transition on Thursday, giving it a look and feel that suggests the new president will utilize the Internet to a much greater degree than his predecessor.

The site is a slightly more formal-looking incarnation of Obama’s campaign web site that features a blue-shaded presidential seal and a countdown clock to the Inauguration on January 20. There are biographies not only of Obama and Joe Biden, but also the directors of his transition team: John Podesta, Valerie Jarrett and Pete Rouse. The web site outlines Obama’s policy agenda, on issues from Iraq to social security to urban policy.

While the site lacks the innovative community organizing tools that helped propel the Illinois senator to the presidency, one section of the site does ask for user-generated content, asking Americans to submit stories about “what this campaign and this election means to you” and “where President-Elect Obama should lead this country.”

There is a transition blog, which at the moment only features a video of Obama’s Tuesday victory speech in Chicago’s Grant Park.

One link on the site is sure to get a flood of clicks: the “Jobs” section.

“All staff appointments chosen for this administration will be committed to fulfilling Obama’s campaign promises, to rebuilding our government, and to serving the American people again,” the site says.

It seems the server has having some trouble right now dealing with millions of people trying to connect... I guess they'll have it sorted out pretty soon.

The website it "www.change.gov" but it looks like it is slow. I hope the angry reps didn't take it down already as they pledged to make Obama's presidency as difficult as possible. I am very proud of my new President-elect Obama

Might have to check out that JOBS section. Would love to work in this administration, but might have to leave behind my $200k/yr salary to do so.

How exciting to see this happen in our Country. How sad that some of the people in this country prefer hate, anger, division and exclusion over acceptance, trust, happiness, hope and vision.

How sad that people celebrate the exclusion of gay people. How sad that anyone celebrates the hate of blacks, hispanics, or asian people.

How sad that today, when my white 86 year old granmother cried and said she has now lived a full life can anyone have anger towards this moment in our country?

Gayle, Obama is not officially in office yet and you are already under-estimating him. You are everything what is wrong with the good ol' US of A.

I have been blogging on the Obama Website since the primaries and it is amazing what citizens are able to accomplish together through this modality – I think this is a brilliant decision on Barack Obama's part to continue to work with the American people. I am ready to be a part of the transition process.

The link isn't working right now; it must be overloaded. I'm soooooo looking forward to January 20, 2009. Let's take this country into the 21st century and start leading, rather than meandering off aimlessly on our own. It's about time for this new purposeful and forward-thinking administration! We need to join with the rest of the world and once again be friends and leaders.

"THAT ONE" is already opening up government as he said. Now I understand that he has no Magic Wand to wave to make all our problems go away but I am willing to give him the time and to work with him to make our country whole again.
