Senior Democrats say Sen. John Kerry is gunning to be the next secretary of state.
Senior Democrats say Sen. John Kerry is gunning to be the next secretary of state.

(CNN) — To the victor belong the spoils, and after eight years out of the White House, Democrats want to be spoiled with high-profile jobs.

"For every senior job, there is probably 10 qualified people, and it's hard to be the person to tell the nine that they are not the number one pick," said former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart.

Senior Democrats say Sen. John Kerry is jockeying to be secretary of state — and has a good case after endorsing President-elect Barack Obama over Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries.

But some Democrats worry he can veer off message, just like Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

I'd like to see Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense and Bill Richardson as Secretary of State.

I wish Edwards hadn't screwed up – he would've been great for Attorney General. He obviously still qualified, but personally has too much baggage. Maybe 10 or 15 yrs down the road.

John Kerry probably deserves something since he helped introduce the world to Obama, but not sure what.

REDIRECT YOUR RESPECTIVE ENERGIES INTO SOMETHING USEFUL IF YOU TRULY WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN SOMETHING USEFUL TO AMERICANS RATHER THAN ALL THIS COMMENTARY. THE ELECTION IS OVER.

SO FAR I AM GLAD WHO OBAMA PICKED…MOSTLY CLINTON PEOPLE WHO WORKED WITH PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND HILLARY CLINTON SMART PEOPLE

RAHM EMANUEL – GREAT CHOICE! PERFECT CHOICE ACTUALLY.

HOWEVER I AM NOT SURE ABOUT AXELROD IT IS LIKE HAVING ROVE IN BUSH'S ADMINISTRATION TOO CLOSE TO KEEP SLIME BALLS LIKE THAT WHO HAS TO PAY BACK PEOPLE

SPECIALLY WITH AXELROD AND HIS TIES TO BIG MONEY OIL COMPANY EXCELON CORP WHO THEY HAVE TO PAY BACK
WE DO NOT WANT INSIDERS LOBBYING FOR ENERGY BILL LIKE DICK CHENEY'S ENERGY BILL WHICH OBAMA WAS FORCED TO SUPPORT BECAUSE OF HIS TIES TO EXCELON…IT WOULD BE SMART TO KEEP THEM OUT
WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER HALIBURTON

Kerry is good senator but not qualified to be Secretary of States, i agree he will veer off at times, not what we need. Maybe some some soon-to-be-chosen veterans can do 1 year while incorporate and train new talents for the jobs for the last 3 years. we need experience at a time like this but new talents are necessary to bring more change to our country.
people with hate, it's bad for your health and nothing will change because of hate, you know.

I think collin powell would be the best fit for Sec. of state. by doing that obama can make another history of unique bipartisanship attitude which will ultimately reflects not the party but the country is our first consideration.

Hey "American Loses"

NEWSFLASH: Russia hasn't been a communist country for 18 years. If anything Russia has become an expert in the exercise of bandit capitalism. There are more billionaires living in Moscow and its suburbs than is ANY OTHER city on earth, and the city itself has some of the highest real estate values in the world: more expensive than NYC and San Fran.

I guess you're just another example of the failed American public education system that Obama's administration needs to reform so badly.

Barack Obama could fill his cabinet with conservative Republicans and some people here would still be calling him a socialist who pals around with terrorists. Why? Because they just can't accept that a black man could ever be a decent president. Some ugly stuff going on here. Despite what happened in Grant Park last Tuesday night, this country still has a long, long way to go.

No more fist jabs, birth certificates, or celebraties. No more liberal socialist claims. We are down to the policies and vision for moving this country forward. However, before we go to the mature, thoughtful, meaningful, and rusults driven way of conducting our White house let me leave all of the Clinton and McCain supporters with one final thougth.

BeauMan   November 7th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

I have a very difficult time trusting politicians, in general. But, if Obama wants to see an increase unified support, he has to forget who has "R" or "D" by his/her name and truly choose the best for the position at hand. This would also eliminate a lot of "scapegoating". As a Republican, I believe Bush's biggest mistakes were because of the people he placed in key positions. Many of his decisions were from the heart, not from the head. I do believe Bush's intentions have always been for the betterment of our country. He dealt with a lot of crap that no one person or party can be targeted for full blame.

elb   November 7th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

To all of you who keep claiming Obama is a socialist, would you please READ something about socialism, or READ Marxism, before you start labeling Obama? He ran (and was elected) on standard Democratic party principles–which advocate taxing the "haves" more to provide more social programs and supports for the "have-nots." When you call him a Socialist or a Marxist (and there is a BIG difference), you're just parroting what a bunch of conservative pundits spoon-fed you. If you don't like Obama's politics, fine–but your sloppy use of the terms just makes you look silly and uneducated.

Dave   November 7th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

what a joke! Kerry!

kdavid   November 7th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

NONONONONO !. Kerry is no way able to do this job.
It will take diplomacy, not Jr high blame tactics!

I would not have him monitor grade school recess.
Let alone critical World Events.

This is a very scary idea!

Matt   November 7th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

@ "Wake Up America"

Social programs do NOT equal socialism. You need to read and understand what socialism is before you go spouting off at the mouth. Using the word "socialism" was a campaign tactic by McCain to ignite fear and anger, but it was a terribly inaccurate use of the word and the concepts it represents.

And before you go blabbering about the tax system, recognize that we have a graduated tax. We have had one for a VERY long time. Re-adjusting the percentages of the taxes in each tier is all Obama has suggested. In fact, it is also what McCain suggested. The only difference is that McCain wanted to adjust them downwards across the board (but leave it a graduated tax system) and Obama wants to adjust some down and some upwards.

Think before you speak.

Chris   November 7th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

John Kerry??? What has he done for us lately? His campaign was so boring in '04. I don't recall seeing him stumping for Obama, which is the least he could have done if he wanted to be considered for a position in the new administration. And geez, what's with his face? He's got that permanent 'surprised' look. So boring…and now vain, too. Great qualities for Secretary of State….

Kerry would be a disaster as Secretary of State. Let's home Obama continues to show his good judgment and not pick him.

Elizabeth   November 7th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

I think Bill Clinton would be the best, but Obama would have fun controlling him. My choice is Richardson, but Hal Holbrooke is a good choice. I think the best place for Hillary Clinton is majority leader of the Senate. Boy, she'd get that place in order real fast! Attorney General might be another interesting place for Hillary. For Treasury lets go for the best: Nobel Laureate, Paul Krugman.

johnrj08   November 7th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Obama is too smart to pick Kerry. Hagel has a much better chance because he's less ideological and more no-nonsense. Also, because Hagel is a Republican, he can be tough with his own party while giving Obama the bi-partisanship he wants. That will be Obama's style.

Matt   November 7th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

@ Kevin

You're an idiot.

Stef   November 7th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Obama, If you pick Kerry, I want my vote back… Where is the "change" if you are going to give all the posts and appointments to the same old washington cronies.

Don't forget what "change" really means. It does not mean bringing back the old Clinton administration. There were a few to re-use, but not many, and not sure about Emanuel, that isn't really a change is it?

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   November 7th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

All of you Republicans ranting about "Reverend Wright" and "Socialism" and "spread the wealth" you just look stupid. We have one of the most intelligent men we've ever had as our President and he's going to do right for America. Give him a chance. If you don't like it, then in four years you can do your best to vote him out. Otherwise you're wasting a lot of negative energy for nothing.

Al Mellen   November 7th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

The choice is quite obvious,,,,,,,,,,COLIN POWELL. He is well known around the world. Forget his endorsement of the war,,,,,,,George Bush was the person that put our troops in Iraq,,,,,,not Powell. He is exceptionally smart, well liked by people througtout the world. Like Obama,,,,,,this man thinks before he jumps to conclusions.

Donna from Colorado Springs   November 7th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Kevin and all of the other Obama detractors really need to get over themselves! To even bring up Rev Wright now is childish and sour grapes. Move forward people! We need everybody to work together now to get out of this huge mess that Bush and his cronies put us in.

Cricket   November 7th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

I don't know about other Obama supporters, but for myself, two of the things that I found most influential in my decision to vote for him was his intelligence and his JUDGEMENT. Therefore, I don't think he needs our suggestions or advice on selecting his cabinet members.

I will admit I would like to see Colin Powell and Chuck Hagel used in some capacity, but that is entirely President-elect Obama's decision.

At this moment I'm only interested in supporting him in any way possible.

Bridget   November 7th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

My picks are that Hillary Clinton should be Attorney General and bring respect back to the Dept. of Justice. Jim Webb for Secretary of Defense or head of Veterans Affairs. Colin Powell or Hagel for Secretary of State. John McCain would do well heading up a post where he can fight porkbarrel spending but don't let him near a lobbyist. Janet Napolitano should be in there somewhere, too.

I would love to see Jill Biden as Education Secretary.

Paul   November 7th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

This is change? Looks like more of the same old corrupt politics in a different package.
Wonder how the media is going to sell this.

Democrats currently serving in the house or senate should stay where they are. Giving up that seat makes it vulnerable in the next election cycle. There are plenty of qualified candidates to choose from that won't risk our majorities in congress.

John Kerry as secretary of defense? You've got to be kidding. He qualifies as secretary of defense because he served in Vietnam on a swift boat? Thats almost as bad as John McCain being qualified to be president because he was a POW. The only thing Kerry is qualified to do is spend his wifes fortune-almost like McCain. Colin Powell would be a much better choice. Someone with a higher military background and a clear understanding for defense needs to fill this position. Not another elite rich politician who married into money.

Secretary of State John Kerry, meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister –

Kerry: "Minister, you are correct. The American Army is inherently evil. Torturing innocent civilians. Torching villages in a manner reminiscent of Gin-Gis Khan…"

bipartisanshiprocks   November 7th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Obama needs to set the example of putting aside petty partisanship so that we an actually move things forward in this country for the better. I think he needs to start, as he had said in the past, with a bipartisan cabinet. I think he also needs to choose ppl with experience and charisma. I think Hillary or even Colin Powell (if he is up for it again) would be a good choice– wouldn't it be a total shocker to see McCain or Lieberman someone of their likeness in the cabinet– a Republican/democrat/Independent who has a track record of bipartisanship? I think that would be a read indicator of leadership and the willingness to rise above on part of the President-elect. (btw, if Lieberman is "punished" for actually have the integrity to stand by his positions despite party politics, I fear that is a sign that not much is going to change by the way of pettiness).

Overall,
I agree with Kirk and Mitt Romney alike– no IOUs.

Obama should select Palin as Secretary of State.
I am surprised why no one even talks about it. She has energized the base, and she is highly qualified in foreign affairs, with her in-depth knowledge about NAFTA, relations with Russia, etc. And what if she doesn't know much about Africa? She knows the pro-American parts within USA very well.
I am sure she will serve Obama's cause loyally, just like she helped McCain's campaign.

William   November 7th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I think John Kerry for Secretary of State will be a Universally poor choice…for both Dems and Republicans. He is very uneven, unsteady, and not the guy to fill a position where stability is key.

jp,michigan   November 7th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

PLEASE…………NOT KERRY OR RICHARDSON! I wouldn't trust either one of them. Obama kept stating during the primaries and election how close he was to LUGER and HAGEL , either one would be a good choice and it wouldn't hurt for Obama to be bipartisan, when selecting the brightest and the best in this field.

For those screaming Hillary's name for each and every position in the new Obama administration, please keep in mind that as Hillary clearly stated after casting her ballot on election day, it seems quite clear that she would rather stay in the Senate (and sooner or later play the role of Majority Leader there).

I think Obama and Hillary have already had plenty of occasions to talk about the possibility of her direct involvment in the administration. So if you don't see the name of Hillary come out, please consider that this may well be her own decision.

dhh   November 7th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

In 2004, Bush didn't win. Kerry lost. My dog could have run a better campaign and he would have ended his term with better approval ratings than Bush. (He's a Jack Russell, always eager to please.)

Kerry's was not the kind of performance you reward. GIve the job to either one of the Clintons.

Yogi bala   November 7th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

John Kerry is the one who did not fear to control Bill Clinton, when Clinton was spreading too much of negatives on Obama.

John Kerry is the one who openly endorsed Obama in a very early stage.

John Kerry is the one who brought Obama to a lime light in DNC 2004.

John Kerry is the one who has more knowledge on foreign nations than any one now.

John Kerry is the one who got everything about the world from TED KENNEDY.

If John Kerry is selected as the secretary of state, it is going to be another good judgement made by President Obama.

Jim   November 7th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Bill Richardson was a miserable failure during his tenure in the Clinton administration. He would be a terrible choice, as would Kerry.

Ray Fisher   November 7th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I hope President Obama realizes it was change which got him elected and appointing the same old faces could hurt his image. We need new faces, ideas and plans. IE. GM is almost out of money ergo loan them some cash to retool and build fuel cell vehicles and have DOE begin building a hydrogen fueling station infrastructure to support them. If the planning is accomplished properly he can kill multiple birds with one stone, save GM, Ford, etc… create jobs, improve the economy, stabilize markets, reduce pollution etc… We need not remain with the one hit wonder gang forever!!!

Praetorian   November 7th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

1- Cigar Store Wooden Indian
2- A lawn jockey for your horse.
3-A doorstop.
4-A hot dog turner.
5-A turtle race referee.
6-A star counter.
7-A proctor for SAT testing for the comatose.
8-Amoeba
9-Hair follicle collector.

But….he would not make a good Secretary of State.

I'm confident in Obama's judgement, and though I am not a fan of John Kerry, I understand that he has been in the Foreign Relations Committee for years and has all the credentials to be an effective Secretary of State.

Having said that, I know there are very good candidates for that positions, and I'm confident Obama will pick whoever he thinks is best for the job, regardless of "how nice he/she looks", or "party affiliation" or, of course, "the color of his/her skin".

James from Kansas City   November 7th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I would like to be Secretary of State.

Jude   November 7th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

I think Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense or some other position on the cabinet would be a great idea.

Maybe Richardson for Secr. of State?

I would leave Kerry in the Senate. I'm not sure about Secr of State for Kerry.

Blue is my favourite colour   November 7th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Kerry as secretary of state doesn't sound like a good fit–attorney general maybe–he has the experience as a lawyer and as a no-nonsense prosecutor . Hagel is a better pick for sec of state, and I really think he should give the sec of defense job to Wesley Clark.

Two faces, neither pretty   November 7th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Kerry was advocating for that postion before he was against it.

:-)

laura   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Hillary Clinton would make a great Secretary of State …. heck she can even be Attorney General.

If not Hillary then Bill Richardson sounds good to me.

DavidZ   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

I would rather see Hillary or Richardson in a key role. I just don't remember Kerry doing much until the end of the campaign.

REPUBLIC OF TEXAS   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

BEST WISHES TO YOU BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HUCKABEE 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONSERVATIVES REUNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ferris_bewley   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Let him put together his team. We elected him to run the country and we do not need to give approval to whom he is deciding. The one he chooses will probably have experience but unknown to most of the public. Also, don't be surprised if it is a Republican. Personally, I think Colin Powell will be an excellent choice for Sec. of Defense. He did not want to get in the war and was left out by the Bush Administration.

I would like to see a person holding a Ph.D. in Conflict Resolution with a concentration in Peace Studies as a top advisor. It is hard to claim that we are attempting to save lives if our first and final response is violence. Well, that is my two cents.

Penny   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

As much as I respect John Kerry, he needs to stay put. He was a disaster for the Democratic Party!

As far as who I think the President-elect should appoint, I believe that there so many who would do a great job: from Bill Richardson to Chuck Hagel, not to mention some great female contenders: Olympia Snowe, Dianne Feinstein and, of course, Hillary Clinton. I believe a "reach across the aisle" would send a very positive signal not just to our country but internationally as well.

Given our battered international standing, we need someone who is great at diplomacy and has the "finesse" to "smooth ruffled feathers" internationally.

Nick Wright   November 7th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

I don't think Kerry is well suited to be that kind of a public face, but I'm not prepared to suggest anyone else for it at the moment, with the possible exception of Senator Clinton.

C E C   November 7th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Isn't Kerry the bumbling idiot that was in the lime llight a few years ago. I would be extremely disappointed to see him appointed to any position. I don't think he could handle Sec of State. I'm not sure he is any good as a Senator.

Max (Miami)   November 7th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Big mistake…

Larry Coury ( Houston, Texas )   November 7th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

The best ones would either be Hillary or Kerry, they both supported Obama, and would also help in some decision making proposals,
especially when something comes up, and the GOP wants to slow it down with a Filibuster

WI   November 7th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

No, not Kerry – ugh, like another poster said. One step further – not Kerry for anything!

Roger   November 7th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Kerry is the last one who should be considered for this important position. Crossing over the aisle for Hagel is a sound possibility.

Aisha   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Now, now people have some faith. We put him in office because we believed in his message, he won't go waivering from it so early in the game. He will make the best choice out of the best people in their field of expertise. What expertise is Kerry known for? Anyone? Bueler, Bueler.

That's right nothing so no worries.

WI Cheesehead   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Some people are just downright ignorant or maybe reality has not set in. Obama is POTUS leave for the 70+ days left for GWB Admin.

Those of you saying that he should be in Hawaii for toot’s funeral have to realize he can’t just do those things anymore, to just pick up and go somewhere like we would do without creating near national security incidents.

Yesterday a Chicago driver tried to overtake Obama’s motorcade little did they know what they were up against when weapons were drawn. Obama going to his kid’s parent/teacher conferences will never again be just a routine visit at the school.

Gotta love the media his security detail is having logistical nightmares just staying ahead of the media on his schedule.

Jack from California   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

John Kerry should stay in his own state and be a good Senator. His presidential run has shown that he is in over his head in another post.

Flo   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Kerry is the last one who should be considered for this important position. Crossing over the aisle for Hagel is a sound possibility.

Michael J, Toronto   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Please no! Not Kerry! For Secretary of State, I like Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, or even John McCain.

Old white chick for Obama   November 7th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

If Obama pulls all these congress people for his cabinet, what happens to the Dem majority in congress? Some of these people are from states with republican control. Leaving congress leave the door open for a repub possibly getting their foot in the door.

"Once the country has tasted the social programs that will take place in the next eight years, how will you justify a platform that will take it all away?"

If all of these "social" programs happen, there will be MANY that will be wanting their country back as their forfathers had intended it to be – based on capitalism – NOT socialism. If I want to share my money, I will decide who to share it with!!!!

RW   November 7th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Say no to Kerry or Richardson for anything but maybe
dog catcher.
There too week, Kerry got baked in an election he should
have one if he would have jumped on his attackers instead of just
laying down.
Richardson is just a wimp.

Definitely not Kerry, after his stunt in 2000, I don't find him to be reliable after putting so much confidence in him.

I agree with several of the early comments. Either one of Bill Clinton and Colin Powell will be a much better choice than Kerry. But the question is will they accept the appointment?

Rita   November 7th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Kerry did campaign for Barack, and he was one of the first people to endorse him over the Clintons, but I don't want him as Secretary of State. I hope Barack chooses the best people for the job and doesn't feel he owes everybody.

H Jay From NYC   November 7th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I think Hillary Clinton would make a great Secretary of State

Rick   November 7th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Watch out Republicans. A good part (unspoken) of Obama's motivation in picking a republican Senator or two, will be to get them out of the Senate. If given a chance to get to 60 Dems, something that didn't happen on election day, he'll try – especially if he can do it and still have Harry Reid trash Lieberman. Certainly, he could find a qualified Republican or 2 that is not a Senator.

Think this is cynical? Remamber, Obama is an entrenched Chicago-style politician who won his first race only when he succeeded in getting 3 of his opponent off the ballot for technicalities. He knows how the game is played.

Ted   November 7th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I think the botox has side effects.

JL   November 7th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

President Obama, you are a VERY smart Man, you will do the right thing and pick the right person(s) for the job. The haters out here need to step OFF and find you some business!

David S   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Richards needs to be on this team not Kerry. He has the background for the job and his support also helped Obama win

Obama4me   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I really don't think that he best represents change. I hope that Barack seriously considers who best represents what we all voted for CHANGE domestically and abroad.

jerry rubin, Whitefish Bay, WI   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Sen. Kerry is the wrong person. I like Gov. Richardson or Mr. Holbrooke.

Ted   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Richardson for Sec of State.

Kucinich for Attorney General, maybe he will indict W and Darth Vader.

RuthieM   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I don;t think Kerry's the one for Secretary of State. Another position perhaps but not that one. He's a good man, but…ah, no, not secretary of state. I think it should be someone more tempered but I'm sure pres-elect Obama will make the right choice.

Wake UP America   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

And….what about HILLARY!? Or is he going to smack her down again?! She deserves a top position here!!!!

Let's see he ran a campaign of CHANGE, but I have not seen any CHANGE. He is having all the former CLINTON advisors work with him. HA! HA! HA!

thomas   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Bill Clinton's advice to Obama was to select the best person for the job. He needs to avoid building a staff around certain demographics or pressured appointments. He has to put in place a cabinet that is appropriate for the problems we are facing today and hopefully avoid some of the problems we might face in the future.

America loses   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Kerry's first order of business will be to go to Moscow and try to fully understand their constitution so that Obama can change ours to be just like theirs. I think Marxism was what Obama ran on, wasn't it, or was it Socialism? Either way, we are about to get the Change we voted for and to all the generations we are about to betray I am sorry but I was only one vote, the zombies won this round.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   November 7th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Secretary of State – Bill Richardson
Secretary of Defense – Colin Powell (It makes sense, he promoted and or commanded most of the top men in the Iraq Theater, they already know him!)

As former CEO of ES&S, the parent company of Diebold, Hagel owes a lot of explaining on the voting machines in Ohio in 2004!

Ian Minneapolis, MN   November 7th, 2008 11:58 am ET

MAKE MCCAIN SECRETARY OF DEFENSE. I voted for Obama, but I know McCain loves this country more than anything, and we will fight until his last breath to keep us safe, I promise you this. Make it so, REACH ACROSS THE AISLE!

ST   November 7th, 2008 11:58 am ET

I think one of the Clintons or Richardson should be Sec of State, Powell Sec of Education, Kerry UN, Hagel Sec of Defense.

bush   November 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

i think president bush would be a good fit

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   November 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Instead of all the insults for selections he hasn't even made, lets wait and see who he actually does pick and how they do under Obama's leadership.

Speider   November 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

It's my belief that President Elect Obama will be one of the smartest presidents and will surround himself with the best and brightest and not pick based on what others may see as being "owed" a position.

I truly believe that Obama understands he has inherited a house ready to fall down and must work with the right team to rehab it. Time will tell. We voted for change and I think we are going to get it.

As for the conservative republicans, if you think Palin will be your answer in 2012, then you are truly in big, big trouble. Once the country has tasted the social programs that will take place in the next eight years, how will you justify a platform that will take it all away?

Andrea, California   November 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I think Obama should pick either chuck hagel, sam nunn or jim webb. i prefer jim webb

Kentucky   November 7th, 2008 11:55 am ET

John Kerry and Howard Dean in an Obama Cabinet? Good Grief!

Surely Obama is smarter than having these two in the cabinet. If Obama starts out having an extremely partisan administration i dunno. That is not the change I can believe in. I had hope for so much better. Probably will be the first of many large Obama disappointments.

shajes   November 7th, 2008 11:55 am ET

John Kerry lost his bid for the white house and I believe he needs to stay out of it. I voted for John Kerry when he ran for president, after which I finally seen what an idiot he really was.

To Candy of West Virginia   November 7th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Didn't campaign for Barack??????? Are you joking?

Barack Obama is the President Elect because of John Kerry. Do a little bit of research before spouting off. I do not think that entitles Kerry to anything, and I don't see him as Sec of State, but to say that Barack is not indebted to Kerry is rather naive.

Tim in Seattle   November 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

If any of the dems in the senate/congress think that jockeying for position is going to do any good I think they're in for a surprise.

Obama's going to pick who he thinks is best suited for the job – not someone who he owes a percieved favors to…congress and the senate have no choice but to cooperate with Barack – the people are watching them VERY closely.

By the people – for the people.

Chi Town   November 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

I respect Senator Kerry, and no doubt he would have done a better job than Bush over the past 4 years had he been elected. But it seems to me that this process ought to be a little bit more modest. It seem quite audacious to publicly lobby for it !

Tony   November 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Great, an inexperienced commander and chief and a flip-flopper as secretary of state. He's just loading up the powder keg for the destruction of this country. Thanks, ignorant citizens, for allowing this to happen!

what about Hillary Clinton? other capable women?

TFN   November 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

No, no, a thousand times no.

We wanted change. Not old Dem retreads. Stay in the Senate, please. Nothing would please the Republicans who are left more than having this guy anywhere near the White House.

No rethuglican in the White House. We had enough of them for a long, long time. Mr. President put who you want in the places as you see fit. Let them cry, yell and do whatever but keep them away. They will stabb you in the back for sure. Republicans GO TO HELL and take George Bush with you, oh and McSame/Palin too. Look what they have done to this country. Yes, I am mad as hell just like most of you. No To Rethuglicans.

Dave   November 7th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Lance   November 7th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Yes Chuck Hagel is the man (I wish he would have stayed in the Republican race). Kerry sucks….I mean I voted for him in 04 and after I went home I wasnt even sure I wanted him to win. Id say hagel or someone from the senate armed forces commitee (unless Powell is willing).

Beverly J. Aksamit   November 7th, 2008 11:50 am ET

I do not know why but I am not confortable with John Kerry as Secretary of State, I prefer Colin Powell.

Chuck Hagel will be a better Sec of State than John Kerry.

Lyndon,CA   November 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Bill Richardson for secretary of state not Mr. Kerry. Please do not reward this guy in this manner.

That's an awful picture haha…

I agree, Chuck Hagel would be a good choice.

Dan, Baltimore   November 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Yes, please do not pick John Kerry. I am not a fan of Bush, but looking back I am glad he did not get elected to the White House in 2004. Plus, it gives the impression that his goal is simply to get in the White House, one way or another, if he's really pushing so hard to be in the Cabinet. Biden might "go off message"….but Kerry makes it worse by trying to fix it afterwards.

CT   November 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

time to pay back for all those favors. Politics as usual.

I'd like to see Colin Powell in there if he wants to be. I think he would do well being in an administration that listens to him rather than one that lies to him and makes him look like a fool.

I didn't vote for Hillary Clinton in the Primary. However, I think that she would be a fine Secretary of State.

The United States needs to rebuild its reputation abroad. Hillary Clinton could be the one to represent the return of the United States to the international stage where it will be respected once again.

Sec of State Richards, Sec of Defense Hagel, Education Sec Colin Powell. This is a winning team.

I like Kerry for the UN. Richardson for Sec. of State.

Obama…there's a reason why Kerry didn't win on 2004….think about it.

Yahoo News: "OBAMA DISCUSSES FINANCE CRISIS WITH WORLD LEADERS. After making the first key appointment to his administration, Obama spoke by telephone with the leaders of Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico and South Korea, hastening the shift in political gravity away from President George W. Bush".

You see, he is wasting no time in getting his act together while those who oppose him are wasting time possibly thinking that he should not have gone to Harvard but rather fallen by the wayside or gotten on the welfare roll so that the stereotypical bashing and bigotry could continue unabated.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 7th, 2008 11:45 am ET

As a Democrat, I want to say this loud and clear. John Kerry, stay in the Senate and not in the Executive Branch. You are fine where you are. President Elect Obama, I voted for you for a reason.

I implore you to think outside the box. This includes brining in someone like Mr. Hagel as Sec. of State, or Mr. Powell if he is up to it. We need new blood and new ideas, bipartisanship, and coalition government. John Kerry is, as you say, the "old politics".

KJ   November 7th, 2008 11:44 am ET

A bad choice if President elect OBama chooses Senator Kerry. He is too Liberal for the job and the wise choice should be Senator Hagel.

I also would hope that President OBama reaches out to the former Secretary of State, Colin Powell. Not for the job in question, but somewhere in his administration. Colin Powell brings great leadership, knowledge and respect with him. I, as a retired Warrant Officer respect and admire Colin Powell for what he has accomplished in his careers….a very wise man to leave the Bush administration when he did.

Maryland Democrat   November 7th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Speaking as a Democrat, who strongly supported/supports Obama, I actually think that Hagel would be a fantastic choice for either Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense. It would help balance Obama's foreign policy, and give him credit with right-of-center America.

Bruce   November 7th, 2008 11:43 am ET

he can do so much better than Kerry…..I do not see Kerry as Sec of State and if Obama nominates him i will be exremely dissappointed.

No to John Kerry. He needs to stay in the Senate. I honestly do not think he is a good choice for Sec of State. Go with Hagel or with Luger. (Please excuse if I spelled their names incorrectly) Both are a better choice.

DMD   November 7th, 2008 11:41 am ET

If I remember Kerry's campaing for presidency four years ago, he WAS wishy washy on everything, just about, and he got swiftboated by not firing back when he was "attacked." Although I think he is very intelligent and a decent guy, I don't think he is Secretary of State material. Maybe "Bubba" himself should be Secretary of State, if he wanted it. He is respected and loved world over.

When can we start collecting our government checks? Do we need to fill out some sort of form or something? I'm tired man I want to go home I don't like my job but I need money. Who do we call about that check?
