Vice President-elect Biden looks on as the nation's next president gives his first press conference since winning the White House.

(CNN) - Barack Obama would not give a timetable for when he plans to announce his cabinet appointments, but said he would make decisions with "deliberate haste."

"There is no doubt that people want to know who is going to make up our team," he said "I want to move with all deliberate haste, but I want to emphasize deliberate as well as haste."

"It's important to get it right and not be so rushed that you make it rushed," he also said.

If he is serious about no politics, why bring his economic team in front of cameras to politic us into feeling better. Also who paid for all these folks to come together in person instead of doing it with this new technology called computing and conferencing. He was heralded as someone who uses technology, please start using it and save us some money.

I think he should be very precise in his cabinet picks and not be rushed. The last 8 years prove that we need more care in consideration. Think Ashcroft and Brown if you need hasty examples.

This is actually meant for the "mutt like me" story above (the comments closed before I could post)

For those of you posters who are either not from America, or who otherwise do not understand American culture, specifically the origin of the term, "mutt," this is for you.

When referring to family background, the term "mutt" is an extremely common American euphemism. Historically, this term came about in large part due to the heterogenic makeup of the majority of Americans. However, it also came about to save time, and make simple conversation more...well, simple. Instead of listing all the various nationalities and ethnicities of your ancestors, you simply say, "I'm a mutt!"

More importantly, when someone uses this term, it is an endearing sign of humility, which is something very rare in world leaders!

By the way, I'm a mutt too, and proud of it!

Fred   November 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I hope Colin Powell will be the Defense Sec. Bi partisanship is American.

Richard from PA   November 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

HEADLINE (note sarcasm)!!!!! The Rev. Jesse Jackson is outraged by Obama's use of the word "Mutt" to describe himself. It is a derogatory term and insult to African-Americans. Therefore, Jackson has demanded that Obama's White/German-American side IMMEDIATELY issue an apology to Obama's African-Amercian side. If he doesn't, Jackson asking all Americans to write letters of outrage to President-elect Obama's White Side.

I dont understand why people give Barrack "Mutt" Obama so much credit.

He beat a 2 term president with an approval rating in the 20's, while the stock market is in meltdown.

All he needed was a pulse, and a slogan, to get the American people to fall in love.

And Look What Happened.

Hook Line and Sinker.

Good Luck with the Mutt when he turns into a Curr dog chomping down on your paycheque and everything you touch.

How about a consumption tax America? Do you Love Obama that much to give him an extra 5 or 7% in a National Sales Tax?

Truth Hurts. The Obama National Sales Tax is going to hurt more.

I feel so sorry for the slightly pathetic people who forgot Bush appointments: like appointing a horse trainer to supervise FEMA – you're doing a hecka job Brownie ... and so on and so forth ... Alberto, who couldn't recall what he'd done – as he said 76 itimes in a 4 hour committee hearing ...

Mcain's ability to choose? Palin and Dr. Phil Gramm ...and the Rove-clones who he allowed to run his miserable campaign...

as for having 2 years to plan ... Obama is way too intelligent to count his chickens before they were hatched – and too intelligent to be rushed into foolish decisions ...

Silly people are already writing Obama off after 72 hours!

Straight Forward   November 7th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I am surprised at the ignorant comments of some of these people. They must be the angry "uneducated" republicans. I am referring to people like Willy Brown and McCain from Arizona. Do you morons want him to do like Bush and just start picking people? It sure sounds like you do. But the educated people with the ability to think and rationalize want him to take his time and choose the most qualified people for the position whether they be democrat or republican. Obviously you two morons are bitter about your candidate losing. Get over it. If you don't like the president – elect that much, move to Russia for eight years. (Yes i did say 8 because there are two terms coming for Obama and Biden).

Gene   November 7th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

McCain from Arizona:

Yep... there he goes again.. words, words words... those horrible words like "It's important to get it right" and not to rush into these decisions through haste...

Maybe if McCain used those types of words and stuck to that philosophy, he wouldn't have been completely blown away in this election.

We don't need a kneejerk reaction president.. we need someone thoughtful and pragmatic.

Matt   November 7th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

You better have some conservatives in your cabinet or you will never get your "change" Barack. Please all I ask is surround yourself with both sides of the isle to get the whole picture. If it's "Liberals Only" then your policies will never amount to anything but Jimmy Carter part 2.

For someone who dislikes Obama as much as you do, I would think that since the election is (finally!!) over, you would move on with your life and stop posting nasty comments on EVERY article that comes up in the ticker. You obviously have nothing better to do than sit in front a computer and nitpick our President-elect.

As a fellow upstate New Yorker, let me be the first to remind you that upstate NY has many winter activities for your pleasure. Why don't you do the rest of us a favor and go re-discover them. And stop your whining you sound like a 9 year old.

Empty barrels make the most noise and all you do is criticise but I am yet to hear of any suggestions or solutions coming from you. Put up or shut up. No one likes a whiner.

INDEPENDENT   November 7th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

The only hope I have is that he chooses cabinet members according to one single principle:

***Choose the most qualified person.***

Don't choose people because they supported you.
Don't ignore people because they are in the opposing party.
Don't give anyone any benefit or disadvantage because of their race, gender, or sexual orientation.
Don't choose people just because they are well known.
Don't think about re-election, Think about the country.

Given that, some of my opinions:
Secretary of State: Someone new, a foreign affairs expert who knows about the world but is unburdened by attachment to past foreign policy. You need to look at problems with a fresh mind. The configuration of allies and enemies may need to be changed. Don't be paralyzed by the past.
Secretary of Defense: Chuck Hagel, Dick Lugar.
Treasury Secretary: Larry Summers, Robert Rubin, Paul Volcker, Michael Bloomberg.
Attorney General: Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sibelius or someone who prosecuted the Justice Department for politically driven attorney hirings/firings.
Secretary of Energy: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Environmental Protection Agency: Robert F. Kennedy Jr, or one of the scientists from the International Panel for Climate Change.

Dee   November 7th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Mike..you should know that you can not make appointments, etc. because some people will have to be vetted and go through a confirmation process..that takes time..

George Bush is STILL THE PRESIDENT until 1/20/09...Obama can take as much time as he needs to make the RIGHT appointment...we all know he has a list that he has been working on for months...that does not mean that everyone WANTS the position he is considering them for...there are are least 10 people to go through for EVERY position..

Waiting on him to fail will take enormous time away from your life...let the man get INTO office first please....

Obama is the calm, cool and collected President that we need. In life, the people who rush you generally do so for their own selfish needs. Reacting to situations on demand is a form of weakness and many times causes you to show your hand prematurely and at a disadvantage.

Let them wait. It takes a second to conceive a child, nine months for the child to be born and a generation for the child to become an adult. The question for many after the fact, and sometimes forever, is should I have rushed into conceiving the child in the first place?Rushing into important decisions like this and others can lead to lifetime of disappointment.

Measure three times before you cut once because you often only get one chance to get it right.

Barack is going to build a team that has people that are great at what they do. He is going to surround himself with a proficient and capable administrative staff. Though time is of the essence, it is critical that the right calls be made.

JM From MD   November 7th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

President-elect Obama be a true statesman! Remember the likes of Kennedy and Churchill. Do not rush or be rushed. Choose the best qualified from any race, gender or party affiliation. Then the whole world will truly see you as the leader of the free world.
one very very crucial issue is the non-negotiable moral issues that go against the very Laws of God. Abortion, emryonic stem cell reshearch, Human cloning, gay "marraige" and euthanasia. Do not let your administration push these agendas. You wil be even more respected and will succeed beyond your imagination.
MAY GOD GIVE YOU STRENGTH AND SERENITY AS YOU PUT TOGETHER YOUR ADMINISTRATION.
THE NATION NEEDS TO PRAY FOR PEACE ON EARTH.

Jenea Bradley   November 7th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Great First Press Conference President Obama!!! Deliberate haste is just what we need right now! Hay has everybody been to his new website, Change.gov? He is really a 21st century president!

Settle down. A long rusted iron cannot be brought back to it's true sheen in one day. It requires patience and consideration.

And I think after Bush, this iron is very tarnished indeed.

He is a thoughtful and intelligent man, I can only respect that. I am so proud that he is my president. Every door I knocked on, every person that I drove to the polls was worth this outcome. Obama wil change America.

Kerry   November 7th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

To 'it begins': Please find somewhere else to post your ignorance. Here we have a President who is willing to take time to appoint those who qualify and will work hard to restoring back the country. It's only been two days since he's been elected you fool. What did you expect him to have just rushed and picked random underqualified 'friends'. Give me a break.

Cheryl, Westfield, MA   November 7th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Good choice on Obama's part. We'd much rather have a well thought out choice than an impulse pick. There can be no better proof than Sarah Palin what leads down the impulse/knee jerk road!! Take your time Barack and get it right.

PoliticoMike   November 7th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Taking efficient time to make good decisions, and not rushing it, will definantely finish with and produce good results. Obama is very intelligent and I can't wait until his gets into the White House and starts getting things planned and done – in reasonable time of course.

Good team planning strategies is the way to get things done – Smart.

Overall that was an effective press conference. Obama did a great job in presenting himself as the strong president that he will be.

Rob   November 7th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Of course not, all the people he owes favors to have to put their requests in. Then everyone's got to submit their bribes, develop and make back-ups of any potential blackmail material, and do a proper C.Y.A. on the outside chance the media finds its spine and decides to do a little investigating.

C'mon people, these things take time. There are a lot of bases to cover in croni-ism.

Hillary Homemaker   November 7th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

The War on TERRORISM is in AFGHANISTAN, NOT IRAQ !! (Saddam Hussein didn't order planes to hit the WTC or Pentagon on 9/11 Idiots !!)

Charles Jameson   November 7th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Economics is at bottom not just about method but also the politics of confidence. Given his campaign management style, we have reason to deem Obama a very methodical man. After this press conference, my confidence is his ability to manage this economic to restore its health is growing. Let's wait and see, but this is a plus.

Some you guys make me laugh...look...McCain/Palin lost!!! So either move out of the country or get over it and stop crying. Whether you like or not Barrack will be our next president. Also, he's not in office yet and things are not going to happen overnight (he still has to clean up the mess from the Bush admin.) Everyone has so many ideas but I haven't heard any of yall running for office and it's hilarious to me how some of the negatives that people post here are the same things that come from GOP's mouths and republican media (like faux news) grab a tissue and suck it up....please

Jerry   November 7th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

That is not a midget. He's Robert Reich, Clinton's Secretary of Labor. A big brain in a short man.

Joe, Florida   November 7th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The man shows care over haste; a very important for a President to have. Haste got us the wrong plan in Iraq (it shouldn't have happened at all), but it they wouldn't have rushed it, perhaps Bush would not be so unpopular today. The President of this country needs to always THINK BEFORE HE ACTS!!

Old White Guy for Obama   November 7th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Hey "It begins..."

He's going to fix a lot of things very quickly, in spite of you. He won't be picking anyone like Palin, so you have to add some time for vetting.

katiec   November 7th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The fact that President Obama does not jump into decisions, is
thoughtful and responsible in his actions is a big plus.
It will not be politics as usual for him. That belongs to the
pubs.
He will be a great leader and will pick the best people to
lead us out of the diasters of the these last eight years.

Bob Toano   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

The politics of governance is indeed different from the politics of campaigning. I can envision Obama, Biden, and McCain answering the questions of what they are "going" to do. the thought of Sarah Palin being in that position sends a chill up my spine.

BJ in NC   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

After the deliberate well-run campaign of this MAN for President, why do they think he will make hasty decisions for the most important positions for this country? I wish that they would sit down, back-off and be patient enough to give this President time to do what he thinks is right. After not being able to predict his every move during the campaign, they should be accostomed to waiting for his answer.

Karen - Proud of This Country   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Way to Go Obama! A man after my own heart.

mb   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Wise decision, haste makes waste and America has no time to mess up. I respect him for speaking truthfully.

democrattotheend   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Smart. He took such care in picking a VP and it paid off. Contrast that to McCain's hasty pick that ended up hurting him. I think taking the time to fully vet everyone is the right move...like he said, it's important to pick the right people.

Tiffany   November 7th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Are you serious "It begins...?" Would you prefer someone to take their time and analyze people's credentials or make a quick baseless decison? Oh wait, let me guess, you are a McCain supporter and agreed 100% with his choice of Palin after only meeting her once??? I am not shocked. I, for one, am glad he will take his time...

I agree with Obama. Rushing to pick a cabinet due to media pressure will lead to making a wrong choice. After 8 years of bad decisions, we don't need anymore. Take your time Obama. you have until January.

This guy reminds me of Bush! Did anyone listen to him? How many times did he say the word 'uh?' I would say about 100 times. Then when asked why he chose Biden he said, "partly because we did it right." That's not an answer. Also, no specifics and he said things we already know. Sounds just like Bush. Why people continue to elect presidents who clearly can't handle the job just boggles my mind.

Cynthia   November 7th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

This is why I voted for this man. He thinks about what he is going to do, considers his options, and then moves quickly to get it done. Thank you for not running off half cocked.

In the aftermath of its warm, fuzzy glow, tears of joy are shed and proclamations made by people on their knees, hands clasped, looking gratefully skyward in thanks, sobbing women on the View, cry elation for a supposed landmark election for Civil Rights, an historic campaign for the first Black President.

While Farrankan describes Obama as the “coming new Messiah” David Gerber on CNN likens him the “Jeremiah to Martin Luther King’s Moses” (huh boy…)

As Oprah Winfrey triumphantly proclaims “America did the right thing”,

I seem to be the only one to notice that
• gay people still aren’t allowed their constitutional right to free speech, to call their unions marriage, nor right to Taxation with representation and have legal marriage, that
• the most qualified candidate, a woman, was dismissed in a media blizzard-smear campaign of misogyny, lies and phony polls, had to
• beat her opponents in 21 consecutive debates, still loses to the most unqualified candidate in history simply because he is a man. He voted 131 times "present". We needed a Madam President, not a mr. present.

He got more votes, for and against, than any other candidate in history. Americans remain divided more than ever.

It’s time now for the corrupt Obama to return the favors to his corporate hedge-fund backers for the 90% of his raised 700 million, (oh, you thought it came from small donations on the internet? Ha, ha). They still own America (and Obama).

Rahm Emanuel, the most contentious frontman Obama could hide behind,...tsk tsk...

Now delusional with a new sense of equal rights, America remains a hypocrisy ruled by corrupt corporate bigots.
