Tickets to Obama's historic inauguration are free - even though they are already being offered online for thousands of dollars.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Organizers of the 56th Presidential Inauguration are warning consumers to be skeptical of tickets being offered for sale online to President-Elect Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony.

With 73 days to go, tickets are already appearing on the Internet with a hefty price tag. On eBay, 18 bidders have driven up one pair to more than $1,000. One Web site, Inauguraltickets.com, is inviting members of the public to place orders, warning "Our prices will reflect the difficulty in obtaining" tickets. Another site, Dreamtix, is offering a variety of seats ranging from $1,400 to $21,000 a pop.

Watch: Inaugural tickets already for sale on the Web

Carole Florman, Communications Director for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, says "anyone claiming to have tickets to sell right now, or saying that they will guarantee tickets, is not telling the truth." Florman told CNN the 240,000 free tickets to the swearing-in ceremony are currently in a "secure location" and will not be handed out until a few days before. Tickets to the Inaugural Parade and official balls will be handled by a Presidential Inaugural Committee, which has yet to be formed.

The inaugural committee Web site advises members of the public wishing to attend to contact their members of Congress or U.S. Senator and ask to be put on the list for tickets.

An employee answering the phone at Dreamtix.com would give no comment to CNN about their tickets on offer. Karl Roes, the owner of Inauguraltickets.com, told CNN the site buys and sells tickets on the "secondary market" and, while they are taking orders, "we are not claiming we have tickets" at this time.

I was reading the Cafferty article about what we'll miss when Bush 43 leaves and i wanted to comment but there was no more room. Let me say, I did not vote for Bush 43 but i stood behind with pride September 14, 2001 as most American's did. I watch in horror as he destroyed virtually everything he had behind him that day and hocked our future to China. I voted for Obama because he seemed sincere in steering us onto a better course. I will give him marginal room for error but I sincerely hopes that he acts as smart as he seems. What i feel really troubled about is that no one was able to show Bush 43 how bad things were and what we could do for the betterment of the nation. I do not solely blame him, he also had a staff of advisors and consultants who did not make reccomendations to him for the good of the country. Please let history record all of their names and condemn them to the digrace they have worked so hard for.

I support my President, but still feel there are unanswered questions that used to get asked by the media. Could some responsible journalist please tell the public where the money for any inaugural tickets goes? Does it go into the DNC pocket? Also what about the countless millions Obama's campaign raised even up until two days before the election when I was emailed and asked to give again? Does any left over money go to the DNC or where does it go? I know there's no way it could be completely spent in so little time. I think it would be great if this money went to charity or to the bottom line of the US deficit. Thanks in advance.

Robert Wooller Bradford England UK   November 8th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I hope the tickets go to the right people, his most hard working supporters. The people who worked the hardest to put him there and not some former Bush supporter who fell out with the GOP. Obama is a great man and my father says he could go down as the best man in US history. He is a savior is what people will be saying in 2012 at the next election when he gets a second term. With things so bad at the moment, he has come along at just the right time.

I think its wrong for people to try and sell fake tickets to the swear in and its even worse that dreamtix.com wont give a comment about their tickets. I mean come on be man or woman enough to admit you wanted to make some easy money off history in the making. It was a good idea but they should have done their research before actually doing the scam, but I'll give them an E for effort.

Marilynn, Wilmington, NC   November 8th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Crystal Kinard   November 8th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

I feel that Obama is doing the right thing by getting started on his goals. The only thing is if he does another stimulus package that gives taxes payers money will it be enough. I mean Bush plan gave Americans between 300 to 1200 dollars. What kind of stimulus was that, lets be serious the average tax payer has over 5,ooo dollars in bills. Most of the people paid bills with that money and it did the economy no good. I feel that if he is going to do a stimulus to tax payers let it be at the least 10,000. That way people pay their bills and put money back into the economy. It's enough for people to get coaught up on bills, but not to much where they quit their jobs and kill the economy. You can't just give money to companies and wall street it still leaves people without money and without money people don't buy stuff. Which unltimatly brings the stock market down. We need a real stimulus plan, one that will actually make a difference

Saul   November 8th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Obama Advisor in Canada!

Obama come and visit Canada before your Inauguration

Here is why, from your own Department of State

Also send this to Lou Dobbs so that when he talks about BORDERS – to make sure we know which borders he is talking about !!!!!

READ CAREFULLY! Most Americans don't know this...

"Trade and Investment
Canada's importance to the U.S. is not just a border-state phenomenon: Canada is the leading export market for 36 of the 50 U.S. States, and ranked in the top three for another 10 States. In fact, Canada is a larger market for U.S. goods than all 27 countries of the European Community combined, whose population is more than 15 times that of Canada."

Already holds his first press conference and he totally disrespects Nancy Reagan.

I am trying to give this guy a chance (would take him over Pelosi), but it doesn't look good. Zero respect for the former first lady. He has already called and apologized to her, but imagine him making remarks about other world leaders...Putin or Medvedev for example. He won't be able to call and apologize. Without a teleprompter, this is what we get.

He better start showing some respect...

ONLY IN AMERICA . . .

[1.] – In the year of 2000, Barack Obama was not high profile enough or important enough to get into the DNC nomination festivities. Obama was turned away and refused entry.

[2.] – Eight years later (2008), while running for President of the United States, Barack Obama's election committee held their history making Democratic Convention in Denver, and closed out the convention on Thursday evening at Denver's Invesco Mile High stadium attracting 85,000 stadium patrons for 'FREE'. The total price of the week long convention festivities, including the stadium event was $54,000,000.00. The Obama committee and the DNC paid it all off within a month. The $54,000,000.00 stadium event was only a fraction of the $700,000,000.00 raised by the now President-Elect Barack Obama.

HOW IRONIC, ONLY 8-YEARS AGO THE DEMOCRATS WOULD NOT LET OBAMA IN THEIR CONVENTION PARTY. NOW THE VERY MAN THE DNC SAW AS NOT QUALIFIED FOR ENTRY INTO THEIR DNC PARTY HAS BROUGHT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN CASH, MILLIONS IN NEW VOTER REGISTRATION, AND RETURNED THE DEMOCRATS TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

Nice to see our government in all it's grandeur of a beacon of democracy, can't even supply enough tickets for people to stand and watch the swearing in. For someone who is supposed to have great knowledge for planning, they certainly drop the ball every 4 yrs. Add to that a voting system that can be hacked even by a novice and America is no beacon for smooth democracy. We should be the best at it and set a standard for others. Excellent voting machines, irregularities and by all means have enough room for the people who want to pay to go to Washington to be able to see their president swear in.

Best Regards

i will watch on my brand new 42 " wide-screen HD tv. i'll have a better view than anyone willing to pay $ for an inauguration that should be free to all.

President Obama ...

Let your ingauguration marke the end of the Greed is Good, non-value added exploitation mindset behind these sites.

Awesome.

Throw Obama's Aunt Out   November 8th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

She's an illegal immigrant living off taxpayer money in Public Housing.
And she's been legally deported by a judge.

This is wrong. Throw her out.

Obama says Gays Not People, Can't Marry   November 8th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Obama says blacks can marry but gays can't. He proved it by not supporting gay marriage in the California initiative.

Is this the "unity" President?

it's time   November 8th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

i'd like to be there, but thats out of reach for me, but i will enjoy this blessed event with cnn.

Druid Hippies Chose Wrong   November 8th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Who cares. this guy is nothing but a speech anyway, as we saw with his first presser. How many times did he say "umm" "uhhh"??? You liberals were jumping all down Bush's throat about how inarticulate he was and couldn't speak fluently, well Obama's not exempt either. You also criticized Bush for re-asking the reporters to repeat the second or third parts of their questions, well Obama did just that in his first presser. Plus, any self-respecting and honorable so-called post-partisan man would NOT hurtle disrespectful comments toward the dead husband of a former first lady, as Obama did in his first presser. Unity? Thanks, but no thanks, liberals. I say get ready for the failed policies of the next four years, thank you very much, then GET READY for the next Republican Revolution in 2010. Get ready.

DG   November 8th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

All of these events will be televised. I think I would rather watch it all unfold in the warm comfort of my home.

chameleon_one   November 8th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Do you need tickets just to stand on the mall?

Obama gives the shaft to gays.   November 8th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Obama thinks that rights are not for all minorities but only for some like African Americans.

Obama said he would bring all people together–yet he did not support gay marriage rights in California.

Does Obama walk the talk???? Tell me.

@wolfblitzercnn: Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin was a great man. He died at 86. He really helped build up the nation's capital. My deep condolences.
