Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife has been 'gloating' about Barack Obama's win.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife has been 'gloating' about Barack Obama's win.

(CNN) — Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said that even though his party didn’t win the presidential election, he has at least one thing to be happy about.

“I can get back into the bedroom, so there's the big advantage,” the California governor said Sunday on CNN’s “Late Edition.”

Schwarzenegger, a leading Republican, is married to Maria Shriver, a member of the very Democratic Kennedy clan.

Shriver endorsed Barack Obama in February, just days after her husband announced his support of John McCain.

Schwarzenegger said his wife has been “gloating now for these last few days” and running around the house with a life-size cutout of Obama saying, “We won.”

Striking a more serious tone, Schwarzenegger said he doesn’t see how any incumbent party could have held onto power this year, given the economic situation and the housing crisis.

“I think no one knew that it's going to be that bad. I think the Republicans were trying to hold on to, you know, if it would have been just the housing crisis or the mortgage crisis. But then when the stock market crash came, I think it was just too much,” he said.

Looking to the future, Schwarzenegger said that Democrats and Republicans should come together and avoid getting stuck in ideology.

“Democrats and Republicans should do everything they can to help [Obama] and his administration to be successful, because when he is successful … then the nation is successful. And then the world is successful. So, we've all got to work together on this,” he said.

[...] not lost, media is reporting that "The Governator" of Caliyfornyuh is now being allowed back into the bedroom, so there may be hope for us all [...]

The governor lost his chance to be a part of the Obama team when
he campaigned for Mccain. He embraced the Bush/Mccain policy
and this is one of his biggest blunder. I feel sorry for him….
But who knows….Obama is an intelligent man and may still ask for
his service to the country…..

To the Anonymous who said -quoting- "the muslims are dancing in the streets at their victory"

Actually the whole world and 53% of America are dancing in the streets for a Victory that could help us gain back our role in the world!
I've seen no Muslim dancing for Obama, but if it was so, what's the deal… it should be interpreted as a good sign if some Muslims were joyful for an American who is eventually also a Christian.

It would be instead a bad sign to have them fearful or angry… the point in being the leading country is to be able to inspire all the people not tho be able to be feared or hated.

So with your intended criticism you actually pointed out a good point of how the Obama presidency WILL be good for our country.

Maybe you haven't travelled a lot lately, but it hasn't been easy for us Americans abroad, even in allied Europe people were tired of our bully attitude.

Stick it in your mind clearly, cooperating and making strong alliances is the only way to make this a better world, not declearing war over a billion believers without UN consens and building up false evidence to cover up a wrong foreign policy.

layla   November 9th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

this message is for the anonymous…so what if muslims wre dancing in the streets?is that a problem?the whole world was dancing when Obama won..and muslims are part of that,it's a natural raction since "muslims"were the ones who suffered more from the"bush administration"what truth are you taking about..the truth is if you are a tyran you fell!

Daniel Lopez   November 9th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

What is it going to take for people to see that Obama is not "The One". He is merely a smooth talking Senator that said what he had to to get in the White House! Is it not obvious that all the countries that were celebrating his victory are countries that dislike us? Why? Because now they know they can push us around! Lets see how many people test Mr. Obama like Mr. Biden predicted. I for one would much rather fight on their soil than here at home, maybe this war was not in our best interest but people fail to see that we pissed of these nutcases so we cannot afford to leave now! God Bless America and hope the GOP recovers by 2012!

anotherview   November 9th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Well as long as Obama and the Dems defend the Constitution and the rights of Americans fine. But the idea of socialist ideas being forced on me, well Schwartzneneger can keep his getting along ideas with Obama for himself.

Arnold needs to get out immediately ,its a new day!! He is mean spirited just like the rest of his republican croonies. I would rather have brains over steroid induced brawn any day!!! Also just like this horrible 3 Strike Law and Prop 8 lets make a change!!! YES WE CAN!!!!!

Mr Governor:
You're still too Left to be Right.

Shawn   November 9th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Jim:

You and those like you are moronic, unpatriotic swine – plain and simple! I served THREE tours in Afghanistan serving for a president that I voted against twice! And, yes, if needed I would have died for him. Not for the sake of George W. Bush – who I have absolutely no respect for – but because of the office he held. I served for the benefit of my country, and because I live in a nation that is organized under the premise the the president is THE Commander-n-Chief. Now, once again, I find myself under a president that I did not vote for (I am an Independent and voted 3rd party as I could not support either candidate in good conscience). And, once again, I will remain faithful to the president until he leaves office.

If I can do this, the least I can ask of a spineless wretch of a man like you is to at least have the moral character to drink your Starbucks and shut up.

John   November 9th, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Obama will do nothing but divide this country. He is already working toward that.

Lost in Texas   November 9th, 2008 9:39 pm ET

well sure looks like the country is starting to get united. If reading some of the comments on these forums are the true pulse of the country then little or nothing has changed. The right wing haters still want Obama to fail and are willing to sacrifice the country in order for it to happen, plus there are still folks on both sides hung up on the race thing. One thing the gov said that's true is that the country needs to work TOGETHER to get out of this mess. But with some on the right not willing to do so and others with sour grapes I can't see how it will happen.

Paul - New Brunswick - Canada   November 9th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

I liked what I saw on the Late Edition on CNN today; Gov. Schwarzenegger seemed to be trying to mend fences between both parties. I think bypartisanship can lead you a long way… I am a huge Obama, fan but think the GOP can bring much good to a new government who will have to face these daunting challenges. May you rebuild anew, as one.

Mathur   November 9th, 2008 9:19 pm ET

The tour will still involve a Bush, so the last statement doesnt make any sense.

Nathan   November 9th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Arnold is another Republican hypocrit. He stated during the campaign that the country couldn't afford Obama while talking about taxes. Then he gets back to California and says he's going to raise taxes. These people are something else.

Jeff   November 9th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Sure they can try to work together but i doubt much will be compromised on the republican side, good thing the dems still control the house, senate and now the presidency..maybe now something can actually get done!

Thomas   November 9th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Carol, see you are playing the partisanship. Looking for every comment to be spun in any way possible. Do you immediately jump to condemn President Elect Obama's comments about Nancy Reagan, which were not only out of line but completely wrong since it was Senator Clinton who went down that road? He acknowedge they were wrong, but even that he did not need to do in my view–because it was a joke. Lighten up. No more whining. No more partisans. Let's make this country great in every way and quit thinking that we are the only ones that can be right on any given issue. It is pathetic.

Matt   November 9th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

IT'S NOT A TUMOR!

MS   November 9th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

I like Arnold Schwarnezdenegger because his criticism during this election was never cruel, mean-spirited, immature, or unprofessional. He seems to have decided to put american first and his party second. I wish this could be said about more republicans. Hopefully, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska and the other republicans will follow Arnold's example.

Thomas   November 9th, 2008 9:00 pm ET

I am so sick of the partisans on both sides (and yes you Democrats, you have many partisans) who cannot work for the betterment of this country. The Governor comes out, as have many republicans, and says let's all work together and have success no matter the "party" in leadership, and all you partisan bloggers (and presumably many idiots in political leadership positions) immediately start throwing arrows at the other party saying they will never be able to work us. You are the ones who need to look in the mirror. You are the ones who are a problem for our country. I disagree with President Elect Obama on many positions, but I know that he wants, like I want, the economy to recover and be successful, to America to be the world leader (which I acknowledge has been lost under the Bush administration), for our children and grandchildren to have the freedoms and opportunies, indeed more opportunities, that we have had in our lives. I believe President Election Obama will work hard for these things and I think many Republicans will work with him to achieve them. I hope the partisans on both sides grow up and do it now!

sandee in Portland   November 9th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Diana, I agree with you, but to base your comment on 2 people is certainly unfounded. The majority of Obama's supporters are college graduates and of all races, hispanic, asian, african american and caucasian (white folk to you). The point you were trying to make is simply not true. While I'm sure there are some uneducated people out there that think the government is now going to give them a hand out, it's simply will not happen.

This is like my basing that all republicans are racist and believing them when they said Obama was a terrorist. I certainly don't believe that. A lot of campaign rhetoric was spewed toward dishonest statements and half truths. Thankfully, most people are too smart to believe these things and did their research to see what was true and what was false.

Thanks America   November 9th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

Arnold, let it go. All of you Republicans just let it go and support President Obama. This is America not some whiny third world country. Man up America!

catmom   November 9th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

Diana, get a grip!! There are plenty of rude people in this country both Black, white, yellow and brown. Rude is rude so stop trying to make something out of nothing.
As for all you that want to condemn Obama before he is even sworn in, get over it. The past 7 + years of George Bush were not good. He is walking away without holding any responsibility for what his policies have done to this country. You all continue to moan and groan about what you think Obama might do, how about asking Bush who is still the President to do something for this country instead of leaving a mess for Obama to muddle through.

gene   November 9th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

There certainly are a number of weak minds here arguing over Democrat this and Republican that. As a citizen of California I also note a number of bloggers more interested in debating skinny legs than trying to understand the state's deeply embedded financial mess. Hey you proposition crazy Golden Staters, you are the problem…not Arnie.

You have voted yourself bond issue after bond issue year after year thinking it is free money…that it won't raise taxes. Well guess what, California now has a THIRD OF A TRILLION DOLLARS of bond indebtedness and you just voted for about 13 billion more. How can any legislature manage a budget when the kids in the candy store eat more than half of ithe tax revenue up with debt payments.? Got two words for you childish voters: FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY! Learn it! Practice it! And worry Obama's skinny legs some other time.

mississippi librarian   November 9th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

diana, I believe that you are lying. I do not believe that you witnessed the conversations or incidents that you are posting here. debb17055   November 9th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Would anybody care to know the truth? Senator Barack Obama agreed to discuss public financing with his eventual opposing candidate.
After a grueling campaign with Senator Hillary Clinton using her own funds, Senator Obama was smart enough to analyze what he needed to do to be a viable candidate.
What the MSM has FAILED to admit is that Senator McCain also tried to OPT OUT of public financing. The reason he was not approved is because the majority of the board members were not present, therefore his request was rejected (day late and a dollar short).
In all honesty, you couldn't pay me to sit through a speech by John McCain! He is a horrible speaker "my friends". That is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Listening to him for four years would be worse than prison. Yes, there is a god!

WC   November 9th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

I've always like Arnold's personality, which is probably what got him elected in a heavily Democratic state. Unfortunately I also tend to think of him as a Democrat in Republican clothing much of the time. But to the point I disagree deeply disagree with helping Obama be successful. His success (in an unholy alliance with Pelosi) means that we move many more steps towards becoming the USSA….United Socialistic States of America. He didn't run to "save" the country. He ran to push a very liberal agenda which I, for one, will oppose with every means I have. Have we already forgotten his "redistribute the wealth" slip of accidental honesty?

A large majority of the moderates who voted for Obama are going to be very surprised at what they have unwittingly created. Just remember everyone, you can still oppose him. He's not the true Messiah….really!!

As an aside – every year the State cuts funding to our schools and our teachers get layoff notices – then local districts get to hire some back. First they're not paid enough and Second – there is no job security – no roots – who would want to become a teacher these days.

Dear Mr. Governor,
Attacks on Obama reached the lowest point in presidential election history when you attacked Obama’s physique and body figure at the McCain rally in Ohio. How would you have felt if McCain's physique were also attacked? See how dirty that would've been ??? Also was also an insult to the American people for you to have suggested that at this day and age, even any average American, let alone Obama for that matter, would want to drag America to the old socialist regimes of old Europe – the reason you gave for running away from Europe some 40yrs ago – which of course was all lies. We all know how and why you came to America. Lucky you, you have achieved the American dream and now you want to bite the hand that fed you. And over 40 long yrs later I can't still understand you properly when you speak English. Unfortunately some Americans still live in the virtual world of cinema – reason why they elected you into office. One thing for sure, since you made fun of the fact that Obama had to put some meat on his "skinny legs" as well as "on his policies", the truth of the matter is, you are the one who needs some red meat in your brains, then I guess you'd be 100ft taller.

The election is history, albeit shattering history. Can we now agree to work together to return the United States to a place where it is respected and admired? It will take each of us to do this, so let's get over our differences and put it all together for our next generations. All that is necessary is for each of us to step back and make a serious attempt to pull together. I think that we can do this. As the young man's sign in Grant Park said, "We Have Overcome". So…let's get it done!

Ok I am confused, Are you saying that supporting Obama makes me a racist? Against whom? He is half black and half white. SO which race am I being racist against? Or are we in denial that he is half white?
I don't believe that those who supported McCain are racists, but I am sure some are.
Just like I believe that some who voted for Obama , did so because they see him as black.
Just not I. Since I truly comprehend, like most who voted for him, that he is just as white as he is black.

FOR OBAMA   November 9th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

What I think is going on in the Schwarzenegger household is a great example of how Democrats and Republicans must work together to get things done. If Maria didn't let Arnold "back in the bedroom" communication would cease in their household which would be unfortionate for both parties. By implementing a little give and take it leaves options open and allows further discussions and negotiations to find the middle ground. Why can't Washington work the same way.

Also, to Diana,

I am an African American, pay my mortgage and pay for my gas no matter what the price is. I'm getting really sick of people like you who try to hint that all African Americans are is a bunch of lazy people who just want handouts and to be able to break the rules. Read some history, we built this country and continue to do so. What you imply is nothing but a racial slur and you should learn to be bigger than that. And don't worry, I just paid my mortgage and bought a tank of gas; both of them I paid for from working hard and earning a paycheck; like most African Americans.

I am one of many republicans who wishes our new president well.. (unlike the screaming and legal action that was taken by the democrats when their candidate didn't win as well as the legal action being taken after a fair CA vote around prop 8).. but I digress.

I am concerned that some of Sen Obama's followers have unrealistic expectations though because of two different instances that I witnessed the day of the election and after. On election day, I heard an African American woman talking on her cell phone who said that soon, when Obama won, I "won't have to worry about my mortgage or worry about paying for gas". … huh?!

The other instance was also an African American woman whom I saw standing in a grocery line with two items behind a couple with a full cart the day after the election. They saw that she had two items and offered for her to go in front of them. She walked in front of them without thanking them or even acknowledging their gesture and said loudly "pretty soon, I'll always be first in line"..

If this is what the Obama followers really believe.. God help us!

I don't know how you people can applaud Arnold. He's ruined the state of California, it's in a mess, and his jokes are crude. While he was out helping McCain (some help) the State of California is billions of dollars in debt, state workers are being laid off, and the Federal Courts are ordering billions of dollars to be spent for upgrading prison hospitals while tax paying citizens are losing their health care benefits. What a mess!

Really offended at Arnold's jokes, are we?
I didnt vote for Obama, but he is soon going to be our President and for that I will support him and wish him the very best.
I will even go one further than many of his staunchest supporters on this Blog and say I think he can handle the jabs and the jibes well enough; it is part of the game he knows full well. Just read his book.

As the President of Change, I am making a formal request for him to help Lieberman in this transition.
It takes a lot of courage, inner strength and conviction to do what Joe Lieberman did, in a time where challenging the status quo is the most popular verse in town…until someone actually does it.

One of the reasons I didnt support Obama is his promise to bring a sweeping, but undefined change, to Washington. I thought he was full of it from day one.
Well, on November 4th, his words got him his wish.

President-elect Barack Obama has my support. Making good on his promises would earn my respect.

Arnold, I think you will find that the new administration will be by far more attentive to government business than most of the Old guard Republicans that you have been part of. President elect Obama has proven to you that he doesn't need brawn, rather he just needed to be smart.

His campaign hoodwinked the McCain campaign by saying at a late moment that he would not take public money for the election.

This was a brilliant strategy that allowed him to raise much more campaign funds than MacCain sould spend by the rules.

I seems to be a small fib compared to all of the lies John and Sarah through at President Elect Obama.

The good thing is Obama did not attack their characters.

So go do your workout.

Mydogspot   November 9th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Thankyou Govenor, thankyou for saying what needs to be said, that President-elect Obama must succeed for all of us to succeed in this incredible and unprecedented downturn. My candidate lost the election, but my country won by having a seemless and successful democratic election that once again shows the world that our American democratic principals are well grounded and working superbly. I'm proud of this, I'm proud to be an American, I'm proud that we have a new President, he may not be my choice, but he's our President all the same and I support him. The election of an African-American as an issue in the election I find to be disconcerting, as I'm not concerned with race or color, and I find it a bit trite that some would inject this into the process as if the majority of American are still living in the 50's. We as Americans won, and the Democratic Party was successful in placing the candidate of their choice in the White House on January 20, 2009 to embody their ideology and put forth their agenda. Bravo, bravo, we and my fellow Republicans did this in 2000 and we put forth our idealogy and agenda then. Weither or not you agree with the results of the last years is a matter of choice, but surely you will have the opportunity to state your opinion again in
2012 and 2016. That's how it works and has been working for some 200 years, so let's just revel in our American Democracy and live and let live for another 200 years and beyond.

irishny   November 9th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

the guy has twice been elcted govenor of a notoriously liberal state.if you think he can do that and still be some cartoonishly dumb bodybuilder, then hes clearly not the one whos dumb.

maybe the reason things arent going so well in california is because everytime he brings forth an idea the democrats shut it down.

hes clearly had the last laugh.good article from him by the way.

GLORY BURKE   November 9th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

It is commendable that Schwartzeneggar believes that Democrats and Republicans must cooperate for the good of the country. This is a remarkable change from his crticism of Obama's figure and making a comparison of Obama's lean figure and his policies. It would appear that the electorate liked Obama's figure and policies why he had such a large number of Electoral votes.

He and others like him need to wake up and try to figure out what happened in case they get the chance to avoid problems in the future.

It is surprising, yet commendable , that Schwartzneggar (Arnold) is now extending courtesies to Barack Obama. I was scandalized last Sunday when he campaigned with McCain, and commented on Obama's lean figure and compared the thinness of Obama's figure to his policies.

Of course his comments were petty and malicious, and I don't believe that Obama would want to go to Arnold's Gym to develop his figure. We, and his wife Michelle prefer .Barack the way he is

Yes, there are 2000 versions of the Bible, but the message is mostly the same… God is Holy.. (separate from Evil).. God is Love.. and through it, we find redemption in Jesus. The Bible to this day, can be used throughout the entire world to perform exorcism, in the name of Jesus. The Bible is not just a book. It invokes the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God into our lives.

Obama is willing to listen.

facts are facts   November 9th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

There are some hard facts people need to consider.

Obama got elected to change the Bush/Cheney taxation schedule where they reduced wealthy people's taxes. There will be no compromise from Republicans on this issue.

Obama got elected on environmental and energy policies designed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. There will be no compromise from Republicans on this issue they don't agree there is global warming.

Obama got elected on instituting an affordable health care plan for Americans. There will be no compromise from Republicans on this issue they are in the pockets of the medical insurers and can't get out even if they wanted to.

What the blow hards are now trying to do is tell people and the Democrats they have to stay to the right on these issues but if Obama is going to bring chance for the benefit of Americans he is going to have to come through on his policies.

Arnold shouldn't be the GOVERNOR of California and should NEVER be president. He is running CA into the ground!

Who cares what the big buffoon says, thinks or does! He is so condescending to people and all he focusses on is who has the biggest biceps. This man has the intellect and depth of a flea! He has done the same thing to California that Bush has done to the nation. Time for a new Governor but unfortunately we have 2 more years of this boob!

Arnold… Arnold…
Let's get it right. IT wasn't just the housing market, mortgage crisis and stock market crash. let's be honest which i know is difficult for Republicans. Obama was a far superior candidate and will be a afar superior President.

I'm estatic about getting it right, this time. The world is as well.
Welcome back…

Former Republican in TX ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~   November 9th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Let's face it, the only reason Arnold is a "Republican" is because that was all it took to get elected when he first ran. (Remember when there were a lot of Dems changing parties back about 8 years ago– just to insure an easy victory when the GOP was winning everything.)
If Arnold had been running for re-election this year, my money says he would have changed parties– that he would have "finally seen the light", and run on the Democratic ticket.

We have a nitwit chick here in TX who ran for State Rep many years ago on the GOP ticket because it was a guaranteed win. (And trust me, she held to NO GOP values– well, other than taking every junket known to mankind.) She eventually got tossed once people saw what a loser she was– and there was a decent Republican running against her. But even now she's still trying to get back to the State house because if she can get a few more years under her belt, she's eligible for "retirement" (she's always looking for that free dollar). So…. this year she figured being on the Democratic ticket would be a sure bet back into the legislature, so she changed parties and announced she had "seen the light". But I guess she forgot about the fact that she was running in a hardcore Republican enclave in northeast Tarrant County because she still got blown out of the water. However, and TAKE NOTE, TARRANT COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY, she should NEVER have been allowed to file on the Democratic ticket…. because to put it in the cowboy venacular, "she weren't one".

M.J.   November 9th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Haha…wow…okay….
To the Obama supporters: we made our point! We won all the states we needed and within a couple of months Obama will be president. No need to rub it in anybody's face! We made our point and now its time to make a change!

To those who didn't support Obama: give the guy a chance! We are all under one flag, why don't we just work together to make this a better place? Obama is the president whether you like it or not. And the amazing thing is that he did it fair and square!

Frann Altman in CA   November 9th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

I supported you the first time around. I am really an independent at heart.

When I saw the video of you campaigning for McCain, making fun of My President's lean frame and tying that into his lean policies, or however you phrased that, I lost respect for you. You went for the cheap laughs at your own expense. Cheap shots. You didn't add to McCain's campaign. You diminished it.

An intelligent man with integrity, insight, inspiration and a cool head won.

Still hard for you to admit the better person won the race because of the race he ran.

Wow! I'm disappointed in Maria. She should have held him off at least another month for his campaign speach. If he had JUST said he supported McCain that would have been enough to kick him out onto the couch but to come right out and do a campaign speach for him, that, should have added to the penalty!!! But then, Maria is a true democrat and she'll give in to those repub's, BUT I'm sure she made him beg and plead just a little.

I think that all you liberal democrats out there are gloating to soon, it would not have mattered who was running the democrats had to win this election because most of the people in your country listen to the meida instead of the facts, don't forget three of the top people who cooked the books (fannie mae, freddy mac ,etc ) to get those huge commissions, of which they got to keep most of, did not go to jail for putting your country into the housing crissis, but went to work on the Obama campain team ,whats up with that,& social medical insurance does not benifit the people it just over taxes them ask any canadian,so you think that Obama can quick fix the problems in your country ha I think that you will just have to re elect him in 2012 and it still wont be any better, you must all be college graduates of america spent 4 years getting drunk and stoned on you parents bank accounts, as for you Adam even animals know that same sex marriage isn't right, maybe you would get your wish if they were not so ready to teach it to school childern once it becomes legal, and best for last this is the democrats idea, thought up in the clinton days, and they are just about to shove it down our throats check out the link below to watch the video on u tube Hal Turner reveals the new Amero Coin,NWO you just might learn something

Just two weeks ago, Republicans had every horrible thing in the world to say about Democrats; specifically, PRESIDENT Obama. Now, less than ONE month, they want to be best of friends?? Yeah right. Save that rhetoric for the next time you people think that we are still living the 40's and 50's. NO sensisble person would have voted for McCain/Palin with there many obvious flaws, yet Arnold did.

Arnold's popularity in Ohio may have help turn the 2004 election. I hope his participation in the 2004 and 2008 campaings in states outside of California ruins his reputation as a centrist here.

He should not campaign outside the state if he hope to have the color of a centrist in California.

Does it seem odd that this mortgage and bank crisis came about 1 month before the election? Smells sort of like a Democrat trick to seal the election. They were the ones who created this mess (1938 under Roosevelt , Fannie Mae )and got the least press on the subject. He who stirs the pot would know when to let it boil. On the war on terror. It was also started by Harry Truman 60 years ago came to a head under two Republican presidents in two wars ignored by one Democrat (Clinton) when the first attack on the World Trade Center was ignored because no price was worth paying to disturb the peace and tranquilty we were enjoying at the time.

I had a feeling that the reason why Obama was constantly negatively attacked by the Republicans from top to bottom, although not all Republicans, during the campaign not because Obama lacked of experience, capability to lead, or judgment, but because the Republicans, again from top to bottom, underestimated Obama and believed that Obama would never be elected for whatever reasons that only known by their own hearts toward Obama. I hope they are the Republicans not wishing Obama will screw up in the next four years, instead, like Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said: “Democrats and Republicans should do everything they can to help [Obama] and his administration to be successful, because when he is successful … then the nation is successful. And then the world is successful. So, we've all got to work together on this,”

Unfortunately some individuals on this blog do not understand what coming together means. Governor Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have it right. Enough with the demos said this and the reps said that. Enough already!

LMC in Seattle   November 9th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

We need to all work together obviously and it is important for people to get over their feelings and reach "across" to people of different parties, beliefs, and cultures to work together. I would also like to hope that this election year will teach future campaigners to be more positive and dwell on the issues and how they will try to solve them, instead of spitting out hate and venom that solves nothing.

by the way, the reason the founding fathers specified that the president had to a natural born American citizen, rather than naturalized is that they felt it was best that the president owe absolutely no allegiance to another country. As liberal as I am, I still think that's a good idea!

The Pecan State Pundit   November 9th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

It is not the duty of the Republican Party to do it's best to undermine the nation's hopes for a successful Obama Administration. Their criticisms are all examples of knee-jerk Conservatism at it's worst. They ran Washington like a sleazy casino for the last 30 years – whenever they had a chance. They led us into a war that had no reason and into a recession that could have been avoided.

Some of them now feel that their duty is to try to cripple this administration so they can elect one of their own to the presidency in 2012 – no matter who.

rainy   November 9th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Who cares what Schwarzenegger said? I have always disliked him but after he made fun of Obama’s physical appearance during McCain’s rally, I cannot stand him. Barack Obama looks like Michelangelo’s David as compared to Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger looks like huge bulldog without lipstick. His muscles (thanks to steroids) do not make him good-looking or smart. I wish he would continue to play cheap roles in cheap movies and leave politics alone. Doesn’t California have somebody with brain to be their governor?

Ah nold is a Girlie Man   November 9th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Arnold talked a lot of smack at that Columbus rally against President -elect Obama.

Nobody told you to go mouth off against our man. Furthermore, what good did it do? He won California, he won Ohio, he won Virginia, he won North Carolina. You have no juice Arnold so let's see that "girlie-man side" tough guy.

Just like Lieberman … Arnold will have to make ammends …. it's not personal … it's just business … and the business is politics….

Andy   November 9th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

If the Republicans really want to help they should just resign and hand it over to the Democrats. Under GOP rule it's war, unemployment and recession. Under Democrat rule it's peace and prosperity. Even Arnold a Republican has ran California into the ditch.

Sammy   November 9th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Make no mistake, Arnold is a republican. But he is not a Bush republican. For example he is not adverse to wanting a tax raise to help fix a budget deficit. Nor does he want drilling in CA. Oh and lest we forget, he did cancel on the republican convention because of the budget problem. How many other republican governors would have done that?

Man, the vitriol in these comments an be depressing. Did you guys listen to anything Obama has said the past 2 years. I was an Obama supporter from the beginning and life-long Democrat and I think we need to cut the rancor. This does not make any of us look better and will only make governing more difficult. Obama's platform was premised on reaching out to everyone, whether they agreed or not. That doesn't mean not forcefully pursuing his agenda, but it does mean permitting everyone to be involved in the process, and forcing all sides to take ownership in the solution. Thats the only way these big challenges will be solved.

BTW, having moved to Cali, it is still surreal to see Conan as the governor. Still, he has been a very serious politician who takes the bipartisan thing seriously. Too bad the housing crisis vaporized the state's budget.

I believe a bipatisanship approach to the problems of our nation is the only we have a chance to work through our many deep problems and mobilize the creative and positive forces that have always been a part of our history. The thing that disturbs me is that when the republicans win, whether it be a slim victory or not, I never hear a call for bipartisanship. The republicans seem to always rule as if they and only they have a mandate, and to heck with working with anyone else. It is time that this division of the country for political gain is at least tempered and BOTH sides pledge to some form of bipartisan approach.

How can republicans say that democrats favor big government, when this administration has increased government by almost 50 percent. They cut taxes and then BORROW MONEY AND PAY THE INTEREST ON THE MONEY WHICH MAKES IT COST SOME 4 TO 7 PERCENT MORE. If they do not more about simple arithmetic than that how did they finish high school much less college??????

This has been the worst eight years of government we have ever had, even worse than when we were governed by the British.

ARNOLD SCHWARZNEGGER IS THE BEST EXAMPLE WE HAVE OF A SENIOR AND SERIOUS POLITICIAN IN THIS COUNTRY WHO IS A TRULY BI=PARTISAN LEADER.. IT IS A SHAME THAT A SOMEWHAT XENOPHOBIC CLAUSE IN THE U.S. CONSTTUTION PREVENTS CITIZENS LIKE HIM FROM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. HIS BEING A NATURALIZED CITIZEN INDICATES THAT HE BECAME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN BY CHOICE AND NOT THROUGH THE GEOGRAPHICAL ACCIDENT OF BIRTH: IT IS THE NATION'S LOSS. WHAT WERE THE DRAFTERS OF THE CONSTITUTION AFRAID OF? TODAY, THEY WOULD ALL BE DISQUALIFIED!

KJL   November 9th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It makes me sad there's an "American born" requirement to run for president.

Dakota, Lake Stevens, WA   November 9th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Hmmm…

As the late Ann Landers would say, Governor Schwarzenegger needs to "wake up and smell the coffee."

I have been a Republican since the first time I could vote, for Barry Goldwater. That was in 1964.

That was a time when “being a conservative,” meant that you favored careful spending; and developing a common sense budget and sticking to it.

“Being a Christian,” meant that you accepted Jesus Christ as your savior.

“Being a Republican,” meant that you favored business, especially the opportunity to create and grow them, and see them prosper.

Therefore, it was OK to be a conservative, a Christian, and, a Republican.

About the time of Ronald Reagan, “conservative Christians” appeared – and those are the far right religious nuts, who want everything their way.

Maybe 10 to 13 years ago, the conservative Christians hijacked the Republican Party. Rather than start their own party, they hitched their trailers to the Republican Party.

Some would say that President George W. Bush sold his soul to, or at the very least, pandered to, the far right conservative Christians for the sole purpose of trying to get their votes.

George Bush helped create the "family values" issues, which were notably absent with the 2008 election, what with Senator McCain's admitted previous adultery and Governor Palin's family situations.

One of the founding tenets of this country is freedom of religion – and I like to add, or, freedom from religion. The first sentence of the First Amendment says it all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment

There are religious zealots who want prayer is school, but they would balk if those prayers were only Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or, God forbid, Mormon or Islamic. Prayer is acceptable only if the prayer is of their religious beliefs.

There are religious zealots who insist that we live according to the Bible – their version of the Bible. Plus, we have seen what many preachers have done to interpret the Bible toward their own beliefs. We only need to recall all of the religious oriented sex scandals.

The trouble with "the Bible" is there are more than 2,000 versions; and I believe that all of those are different in some ways.

Many people would proclaim the King James Version, without knowing anything about King James. People need to read a few books about the history of Scotland, and learn a few things. King James definitely had a few kinks in his hose.

So, all of this is “part and parcel” as to why the Republican Party is in "The Crapper."

The blame for failure goes directly to the religious nuts that tried to take control of the Republican Party.

Nearly all of the moderate, and most fiscally conservative, Republicans agree with Colin Powell; that the GOP has been heading in the wrong direction. He spoke about it more eloquently than I can.

Those moderates rejected the conservative Christian ideals and voted for change, by voting for Obama. I am one of them.

If the Republican Party wants to recover, they need to go back to basics, and most of all, they need to divorce the Party from the conservative Christians. The conservative Christians really should form their own party.

I am a fiscal conservative, I am a Christian, and I am a Republican; but, I am not a conservative Christian Republican – there is a BIG difference.

James (Toronto)   November 9th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Rich comment ("… should come together and avoid getting stuck in ideology") coming from someone who immediately reverts to the Republican camp regardless, and supports their platform as Governor of a State who doesn't provide equal rights (i.e. same-sex marriage) to all human beings. Maria has it right, and must find it difficult being married to someone with such opposing ideology.

Aida, CA   November 9th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Yes, we won Maria!! I have always loved and admired the Kennedys, they are truly Americans heroes who have been fighting for those who have no voice for decades. And Governor ……that was one of the best things I have heard you say…so thank you!

mb   November 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Good for you Arnold. ha, ha

Gary   November 9th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Maria would be smiling a whole lot more if Arnold were doing to her what he's doing to the rest of citizens of California.

Ann   November 9th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Yeah Governor! That is the attitude to have. The Republicans that show a postive, can do attitude, and accept and hope that Obama will be a great President will be a healthy, referesing attitude. If they really want to know how to "remake and revitalize" their party, they will find ways to diminish that slandering, biggoted, and negative, downright hateful attitudes of the so-called "religious right", the malicious attitudes of some of the talk show hosts (Rush Limbaugh is the #1), and the followers.

They need to wake up and realize that Democrats have very patriotic, religious people, and want to do what is right for all of us. We can work together, but can only make that happen when there is a willingness to work, and cut out the mud slinging that has occurred with a minority of the Repubican party, but who seem to speak the loudest. The healthy Republicans need to say "enough", and not allow any attention to be given to them, not sponsor their shows, or give them any continued credibility. Yes, we should have freedom of speech, but real leaders don't continually attack people with difference of opinions.

Lovejoy   November 9th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Very well said.

It's great to hear a Republican speaking about not getting stuck in ideology now. Where were they for the last 8 years?

Wayne in CA   November 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

well…Arnold..you're next…the California steroid experiment gone bad is a joke…and we deserve better..smarter and more competent leadership..

Casey   November 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Gov. Schwarzeneggar shouldn’t be disappointed by the loss.Sarah Palin will be back in full force in 2012. There are several young and able rising stars for GOP that are listed here on the Web site. http://www.sarahpalinrockon.com/risingstars.htm

Doug   November 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

The only republican with half a brain.

Maggie from Virginia   November 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

When republicans say they lost because of the financial crisis; what does that mean? They cannot handle a crisis? Judging the past 8 years, I would say not; but that's still up for debate. Does it mean that their constituency is mostly well-to-do, so they can't relate? I don't know… Help me out here!

Georgia Gal   November 9th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Schwarzenegger said his wife has been “gloating now for these last few days” and running around the house with a life-size cutout of Obama saying, “We won.”

That's hysterical!

La Chatte   November 9th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Yeeeeewwwww! Way too much information. I don't even want to imagine…

Kyle from New York   November 9th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

I am glad to see Mr. Schwarzenegger has an open mind about Obama's Presidency. Too many Republicans are still being negative about President-Elect Obama. We all must stand together and support Obama because he will be the one who can bring our country back from the problems we currently have.

I have been an Obama supporter for over 2 years now and am glad that many people from across the country, white, black, hispanic, independent, democrat and republican are standing by him during this time of his transition into power.

Beverly   November 9th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

DEEP IN HIS HEART HE WANTED OBAMA TO WIN

zaye mangla   November 9th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

The governor of CA delivered a great interview. He recognized the importance of moving beyond politics. He did also point out what republicans need to do restore their credibility nationwide:for a party to be viable, there is a need to address a message toall americans, based on their priorities and needs.

S. Boatman Warrensburg, Mo.   November 9th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

I Am Happy That Mccain Did Not Get Voted In! This Country Now Has A Chance To Recover From Failed Republican Leadership!

Sharon   November 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

It's fine to say we need to come together….nothing could be more obvious…..but as long as Republicans condone the likes of Rush L. and others who are so divisive and misleading and put out the kind of mis-information and propaganda they do….that won't happen. It's past time for Republicans to develop some real ethics and a higher moral standard the the ENTIRE country … we are ALL Americans and ALL residents of this rock we call earth….time to work together, step up, end the pettiness…we'll all be better off.
BTW…this is the FIRST blog I have posted!

suzyku   November 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I'm no longer a Californian however I really resented the "tone" of Arnold's campaigning for mccain. He was just as nasty as mccain/palin were!

Sharon   November 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

So what. And as for that skinny legs comment, Barack whooped the socks off of yall Repubs, skinny legs and all. All of your sagging muscles couldn't uphold against that tide.

DaProfessor   November 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Arnold is dead on right!

The two parties need to cooperate and leave the right-wing extremists behind in the dust. We found out what their "values" are over the past 8 years. They were, are, and will be: Lying, hypocrisy, arrogance, war-mongering, doing everything you can, right or wrong, to win an election.

The right-wing Evangelicals appear to be overly focused on extremist – religion and have now become obvious LOSERS. Nothing new there in history! Religious fanatics have started more wars than anyone else in history.

Hombre   November 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Haha, trust the Terminator to say stuff like this. Dry one line humor.

Gambi   November 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Schwarzenegger says it all when he states Democrats and Republicans should do everything to help Obama to be successful, then the nation is successful. And the world is successful. It's comforting to hear key Republicans are willing to work with the new administration. It's a committment we all have got to make to move forward and end this crisis.

Pua, HI   November 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

That is the tone to set… Democrats and Republicans to work together for the common good of all and support President-elect Obama.
It is a funny comment about Maria Shriver celebrating and all. Actually it is very interesting how Arnold and Maria make their marriage work being so strongly aligned with different political parties, perhaps a sign it can also work in public for the political parties, as well.
I did, however despise Governor Schwarzenegger's comments about Senator Obama and Europe when campaigning for Senator McCain.

Sherri   November 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

I knew there was a reason I still liked you.

Charla in DeKalb, TX   November 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Cute story about Maria gloating…..great example of how people from different backgrounds and beliefs CAN get along….even as husband and wife! Good example for much of the country.

Dave   November 9th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Too bad Arnold's Consitutionally not allowed to run for President or be chosen for Vice-President, but then again there is the argument that it didn't really matter in this election. In any case, he's right, what is good for the US is good for the world, but the US can't allow its generosity be seen as a weakness.

Jim   November 9th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

I did not vote for Obama and find myself very bitter and angry about the whole ordeal. I have been on the losing and winning sides over the past forty years but this time I can not shake the feelings I have…..to see a man that by most standards a radical supported by the media (that I thought was neutral) with no experience what so ever wins over a man that has dedicated his whole life (50 years plus) to his country. I can not support this new president because he has not earned my respect and feel the country will be even more divided than ever before because of this lack of respect………I am not alone. It is going to be a rough four years, we thought the years of Jimmy Carter was bad this time it is going to be extreme. The Democrats are to blame just as much as the Republicans when it comes to the economy……look at the record Fannie Mae and Feddie Mac to name a few).

just bob   November 9th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

As a resident of California with a multi-billion dollar budget deficit, maybe the Governator should spend more time and attention to a state which is falling apart rather than worrying about his carnal desires.

Dora   November 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Well I guess that teaches him! Women do have the power.

rich   November 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

OooH God No. This is information I do not need to hear.

voter   November 9th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

really arnold. I thought it was ironic that you critize Obama for wanting to raise taxes for those who are wealthy. Now you are considering raising taxes. Hyprocricy.

Sam   November 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Too bad that a progressive thinker like Arnold didn't endorse Obama…He could have gotten into the bed room a lot sooner :-)

Texas Teacher   November 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I was truly proud of Maria, when I saw her at the Democratic Convention! She is a fine example to the women and girls of America to think for themselves… don't just follow a husband or father.

Listen, read, and decide for yourself. Even if you fall in love with and marry someone who does not agree with you, does not mean you are wrong! Men are often swayed by other issues than political ones. They have to follow the other boys in the crowd frequently! *LOL*

George Dulo   November 9th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

wow would love for most of us to have this kind of opinion, concerning the mindset of americans and the rest of the world at this time of crisis. there is a great need for inter dependence among people with like minds

DG   November 9th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I think Arnold is a terrible person for making fun of Obama. He is lucky Rose isn't here because she wouldn't stand for it. I'm glad he can't ever be President because I can't even understand him when he speaks.

maria, los angeles, california   November 9th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

lets face it arnold, the republicans arew done!

I've had my fill   November 9th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Keep the change.

Lyndon,CA   November 9th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

One big happy family and all is well with the world. Obviously the governator does not speak for his party. Hey terminator, let me see you raise California's sales tax by 1.5% and have its citizens pay 10% sales tax in some areas.

T.O. for Obama   November 9th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Maria should kick you to the curb for the nasty ,rude things you said about Obama

jamie   November 9th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Electing Americas first Anti-American president is nothing to be proud of!

Mike   November 9th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Uh….who cares!!

CB   November 9th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Everything this Gov. does is in opposition to the Democratic agenda. I know his words a pure rhetoric. The state of California is in a shambles and it's been run just like the White House. I'll be glad when we can see his exit and get our state back.

JD   November 9th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Wow. Arnold's 'whipped. This is news?

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   November 9th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

The Republicans must work with the democrats together as BOTH parties are the servants of the American people. These messes affect not only our country, but the entire world. Partisanship should be put aside, the policies must not be liberal or conservitive, Rather the center.

The messes are to be cleaned up by all of us as we all have had a hand in it. This won't be quick or easy, but we can do it. We must not go back to the ways that caused this to happen.. Think about it.

Just remember……YES WE CAN! Now, YES WE MUST!

Voter in SC   November 9th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

If he was a smart, totally honest person, wouldn't you think he'd switch over to the candidate that held out the most promising future for ALL of us – himself included – rather than narrow-mindedly sticking with McCain only 'because he's a Republican?"

John   November 9th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I'm confused. Is this the Arnold I know from Terminator 1 or Terminator 2?

Meka   November 9th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Your absolutely correct, Arnold. Unfortunately, that's not how the 'Repub's Roll'. As we have witnessed, with the aftermath of Palin.

Hatered is a part of the DNA with Repub's. Shall we VOTE THEM OUT OF AMERICA?

Adam   November 9th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

unfortunately, as is with common wiht republican leadership, the people of his state have decided to stick thier noses in other peoples bedrooms with proposition H8.

DJ   November 9th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Yaay, Governor Arnie is allowed back in the bedroom, and California LGBT community members' rights are shoved back in the closet. ugh.
One step forward, one step back California.

I'll be baaack   November 9th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I can see why Arnie wants to get back into the bedroom. Maria is still pretty hot!

ktcash   November 9th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

That's funny, I thought this story was going to be about his now-godforsaken and disappointing state and how they pushed their way back into the bedroom this election.

Sonya   November 9th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Go Maria!! I love this story!!

julio   November 9th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Well said, Mr. Governor, well said. United we stand, divided we fall.

KLEE   November 9th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Yeah the skinny guy with the plan won guv!

FreeNLovIt   November 9th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

That's right! Remember, Bush's pain WAS also our pain. Bush's tears were ALSO our tears. Bush's struggles and triumpsh, were also our struggles and our triumphs. We disown him, only to wake up and feel his pain.

Yes, we're not connected at the hip, but Our Prez's blood RUNS through us all.

Anonymous   November 9th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

“Democrats and Republicans … we've all got to work together on this,"
he said. Yes, WE ALL can. Amen!

Dawn   November 9th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Well Arnie, you are married to a Kennedy….
