It is sad to see well intentioned posts by Republicans like S Ryan (above) who continue to purport Obama and socialism in the same sentence. Nothing Obama has pushed from his campaign. You want to talk socialism? Are you concerned about your Social Security benefits? Socialism. Medicare and medicaid? Socialism. The Bush/Paulson pushed bailout? Socialism. So please...quite trying to turn the phrase incorrectly.

If Obama had been pushing for a single payer style healthcare plan it would be socialism. But that is not what he said. People can keep their own or choose from the same pool of insurance plans as the federal employees. Hardly socialism. People need health care. They may not need plasma tvs or ipods but they need access to a physician and health services.

Oh and Ryan? If you were so happy you wouldn't have been so quick to jump in and try to tell everyone how happy you are. You would be out there enjoying that happiness!

Well, from a neutral point of view, it is reasonable that any given candidate would be worried if votes went any period of time without being guarded by members of both parties... that is reasonable. And so is the judge's ruling, since there will be a recount anyways, given how close the race was. There is no partisan scumbag moves here; it is simply a close race and both candidates want to make sure that the final outcome is fair. That said, congratulations to members of both parties for keeping it fair in this very publicized race- and shame on all of the common citizens who have taken this very well handled situation and turning it into partisan mudslinging. Leaders from either major political party would be ashamed at how low their supporters have fallen.

Anyone who has read Al's books understand that he is a perpetual seeker of truth and does have a very good mindset for politics. He has the country's best interest in mind with every word he speaks and I do hope he comes out as the winner in what appears to be a very close match. Who knew the politics can stay dirty even after the votes have been cast. oh wait...anyone who paid attention to Florida in 2000.

Amazing how often that, in close elections, uncounted ballots get 'discovered' that are ALWAYS very Democratic-vote heavy (often 100%).

Go Franken! Maybe they should recount the votes for Michelle Bachmann, too. Who knows what they held back to make sure
that self-righteous candidate could make it and make sure that
a thorough investigation of all of the Congress take place. Who is
to say that there wasn't any hanky-panky there? Do a recount on her, please!

Al Franken is NOT a "breath of fresh air". He is a joke. He is the most hateful, partisan person I have ever seen on camera. People got angry with John McCain for attacking Obama the way he did. Well Franken attacked Coleman's wife in the same fashion and people are just brushing it off. The hypocrisy in the Democratic party is starting to show.

Ever notice how 90% of liberal posts call conservatives/republicans names?

Intolerance is only intolerance if it comes out of a conservatives/republican mouth right?

Every vote counts... everuone should count as long as they are legal votes. if they are legal, the court allows them, if they are not, they are disallowed.. asking for either is not "cheating".

For those of you calling the republican party cheaters, perhaps you should look at all of the counties around the country where democrats have been asking about leaglities of their respective election.

Just like Intolerance, cheating is only cheating if a republican is involved.. otherwise it is just keeping within the rules.

Seriously all of you complaining should take a closer look at the entie process.

Don't you liberal news junkies have anything better to do than keep on showing how unintelligent you are??? The next four years will show what a mistake the young voters has caused by not doing their homework on the issues, I mean the real issue, not on just popularity. You choice will cost you more taxes, and you will still be in the same situation you were before the election, except you will be worse off than before.

Mike from Syracuse says:

Why is it 'suppression tactics' when Reps question whether votes are valid, but 'following the rules' when Obama got FL and MI primary votes thrown out?

Do I really have to point out that both Obama and Clinton agreed in advance to the Florida and Michigan primaries not counting? Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot in one of them! And yet, when Clinton thought that she might win by having those votes count, even though she had previously agreed that they should not, she argued that they should count. It was clear to everyone except a raving Clinton supporter that it would be a manifest injustice to count the votes in those primaries. If the people of Michigan and Florida felt disenfranchised by the process, they had no-one to blame but their own state Democratic parties, who went ahead with the date changes in full knowledge of the consequences.
The fairest thing to do would have been to re-run both primaries with both candidates' names on the ballots, and giving both candidates a chance to campaign in them.

From the state that brought you Jessie Ventura as Governor comes another excellent choice for the Senate. And to think the old joke has always labeled California as the land of fruits and nuts.

As the incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman should hang his head in disgrace if this is where he has found himself against a first timer. It proves the point the people do not approve of the job he has done and he was not able to sway many voters with his rhetoric. Just because of the tightness of this race he should throw in the hat as a gesture of the change the people are seeking..... Next time maybe he will do his job, and not just talk about it.

Coleman appears to be insecure about his reelection chances to the point where he will do anything to win. Its about time he rediscovers the private sector.

Last time MN had a recount in a federal race, I was staffing the D side of it. The recount teams were represented by Rs and Ds equally. We examined Every ballot cast in the MN 7th CD in the 1986 congressional race. There were something like 9,000 separate counting errors found during the recount -- and they tended to cancel each other out. But not always.

In the end, the R - Arlan Stangeland -- won the election by about 1/15th of 1% if memory serves. Both sides agreed that was the correct outcome. And now the D in that race - Collin Peterson - is Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, since he won election in 1990.

This recount will be no different. But all the votes Must be counted before the outcome can be declared. At this point, they have not been.

Be patient. They will be.

S Ryan,
I thoughht about it. You are wrong. So much of what is wrong with our country is found in GOP, nationally and locally. A breath of fresh air will reinvigerate the country now. Get used to change, because it will come fast and often. Try to keep up and you can stop pouting like the little neocon kid you are any day now.

Why is it 'suppression tactics' when Reps question whether votes are valid, but 'following the rules' when Obama got FL and MI primary votes thrown out? If the election laws require absentee ballots to be maintained under positive control to prevent tampering, and they weren't, then they should not be counted. That's why we have rules!!!

Everyone is too bitter over this. Even though I am a Democrat, I respect the Republicans. First off, both Franken and Coleman are very smart men. Franken is not a clown and Coleman is not a nazi. Anyone who resorts to calling the opposite side these things is just way too sensitive. What happened to clean politics?

Al Franken is a brilliant, talented and ascerbic social commentator, among very many skills. I hope with all my heart he emerges the victor and goes to Washington to represent the people of Minnesota. In this 2008 general election, we are witness again to the hatred and intolerance of the extreme right-wing of the Republican party.

These "real" Americans would be deeply benefited by reading the Constitution. It has taken nearly 4 decades for the Wicked Witch to shrivel and recede under the house. There's no place like home, Toto. A hardy cheer for a return to respect, reason and intellect.

Coleman will win, Stevens has already won in Alaska, and Saxby Chambliss will win in Georgia…

It is hillarious that liberals get one of their biggest victories ever and they are still bitter and miserable. Take some advice from a conservative, your problems and your misery are not the fault of the government. They are because of YOU. “Hope” and “change” are something you need to find from within and not from a politician. Your political “messiah” is not going to improve your life. As a matter of fact, all he is going to do is make it more difficult for those of us who are actually happy with ourselves and our lives (and money has nothing to do with it). In your vain attempts to improve your lives through socialism, you have demonstrably weakened our nation and the futures of our children. You will still be bitter and angry four years from now and that would not change regardless of who won the election on Tuesday. For this reason, liberals can never truly “win”. Think about it…

Those of you complaining about ACORN are showing your incompetence. ACORN is accused of VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD NOT ELECTION FRAUD. Mickey Mouse may have completed a voter registration, but he is NOT going to show up to vote. Only idiot Republican, Neocons believe this. Grow up! You lost, and it wasn't because of ACORN."

Except in those places with same day registrations or absentee ballots, how many of those counted.

No I think the same issue applies, what is Mickey Mouse's SSN exactly?

"The dems. are masters at playing dirty and cheating to win. Frankin is a dufuss and a jerk. GO NORM. By the way I hope obama gets a big black ugly dog that will fit in with the rest of the family."

First of all, anyone who belongs to the party that pulled the shenanigans the GOP did in Florida in 2000 has no business whining about playing dirty. Gee, counting all the votes -- you're right, what a dirty tactic. It worked in Florida in 2000, but it's not going to work in Minnesota this year.

Second, your comment about the Obamas and their prospective dogs is a racist slur that I'm surprised CNN allowed on their website. Such bigoted ugliness is evidence of why the GOP was so roundly trounced in 2008. The GOP won in 2000 and 2004 by spewing hate, racism, divisiveness, paranoia and bigotry. The American people have finally seen through the GOP's line of right wing b.s. Until the Republican party casts out the right wing lunatic hate mongers who mutate even decent men like John McCain into lie-spewing robots, it's going to (deservedly) lose a lot of elections.

WHAT A JOKE! November 9th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

"Those of you complaining about ACORN are showing your incompetence.
