Joe Biden went to the Eagles-Giants game Sunday and got booed.

(CNN) – People sure to draw the ire of Philadelphia sports fans: Cowboys players. Supporters of any visiting team. Presidential running mates.

Weeks after Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin got a brutal greeting at the rink, football fans gave a similar reception to Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

As Eagles fans watched their team lose to the New York Giants Sunday night, a shot of Biden on the big screen elicited boos from the notoriously tough home crowd, the Associated Press reports.

Biden sat in Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie's box, taking in the game during his first weekend off since Tuesday's election.

Sarah Palin was booed when she dropped the puck at the Philadelphia Flyers season opener in October. But Philadelphia is a heavily Democratic city, and Palin is not a Pennsylvania native. (Eagles fans also infamously threw snowballs at Santa Claus at a December 1968 game.)

Born in Scranton and now a resident of nearby Wilmington, Delaware, Biden calls himself an Eagles fan but emphasizes that his wife Jill, raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, is the real fan in the family.

"My wife is a die-hard Eagles fan, so we watch every Eagles game," Biden told reporters during a tour of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in September.

"I'm not allowed to say this," he added, whispering to the reporters, "but I also like the Giants."

So maybe it was the fact that Biden had no real allegiance to either team Sunday night that drew Philadelphians' ire, or perhaps it was simply the risk one takes attending a game in the City of Brotherly Love.

Texas Teacher wrote about Palin being booed:

thank you… sports fans… this is how we end this terrorism and show these fanatics what we think of their evil fear mongering….. Obama is not a terrorist nor does has terrorist friends… it is McCain's bunch who are the terrorists…. the terrorists who are a threat to all we hold dear in this country…. our pride!

Texan Teacher wrote about Biden being booed:

small base reactions from small minds…… seriously…

In other words, I don't have a major respect or concern for the responds of sports fans onsite. Their minds are on… well, on competition….. and childish reaction to just about anything….it's group mentality… not reality! Obviously, I'm not a sports fan!

Finally, Philly fans are booing for the right reasons. He calls himself a Roman Catholic yet defies the church's pro-life stance. (Philly has a lot of Catholics.)

You might think that was it. But no. It is probably because he dresses and acts like a cheesy game show host.

Rad Phil   November 10th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

My god……You got to love the animinity of the internet, because these people come out in droves and say some stupid crap that they can only get away with without seeing their faces.

To clarify:

They booed the non-call on intentional grounding by Eli.

I will repeat (and for those that don't seem to get this afterwards)

THEY BOOED THE INTENTIONAL GROUNDING BY ELI.

April   November 10th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Those Philadelphia fans are ruthless.

Abe from Iowa   November 10th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

I was watched this game and they thought it should have been inteional grounding on Eli Manning and they weren't booing at Biden.`

Eugene   November 10th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I hope the pope has no immediate plans to attend a sporting event in the City of Less-Than-Brotherly Love.

Dave   November 10th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

good one Stepehn R.
Most people probably don't know (since they never educated themselves on candidates) about this proposed civilian army Obama and Biden are floating. Or that he envisions the budget for it to be on scale with the military's (so where will that money come from?). Or about his proposed carbon tax to siphon $5 trillion from taxpayers to fund something we should really be ready to take to the streets to revolt against.

Steve - York, PA   November 10th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

CNN, take this off the Ticker already. The fans were booing the terrible call on the field (one of many made against PA teams over the weekend). This is not a story. Thank you.

Witness From Philly   November 10th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I was there — they were booing Lurie more than Biden. You would have too if you were an Eagles fan and saw the way the offense was playing to start the game.

Brandon   November 10th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I don't really like Philadelphia all that much because I am from Harrisburg and I prefer Pittsburgh teams and Baltimore, I just think it's funny that someone from Los Angeles wrote "hicks" about a city that is in one of the busiest areas of the country (New York, cities in New Jersey, Philly, Deleware). Maybe people from California are hicks too since you guys voted for Prop 8. Oh wait I know………Latino Gang Members……geeze

Philadelphia isn't hick, just white trash, haha

EJ   November 10th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

It's Jeffrey Loria, not Lurie. If if was your owner (Marlins), you'd boo too!

Dave   November 10th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Good for them. Joe now moves on from stuffing his pockets with the money from predatory lenders headquartered into his state and into a bigger stage. So that means it will just be worse. What a sorry state of affairs we are in (and have been in for decades).

Virginia   November 10th, 2008 11:59 am ET

How much did that seat in the owner's box cost US!!!

Nick FL   November 10th, 2008 11:56 am ET

lol they were booing the bad call on the field. Football fans know this. Intentional grounding should have been called on Eli, but wasn't. Then it showed Biden as the Giants lined up for the next play. They were booing because of the bad call.

Super D   November 10th, 2008 11:55 am ET

It has come to my attention that I said there would be no one for the comedians to have fun with and that I forgot all about Biden. I stand corrected…life will be good after all. We will have Joe Biden to have fun with…one gaff after another. Just like in the Clinton years…there will be damage control at work behind the scenes.

Stephen R   November 10th, 2008 11:52 am ET

Don't worry, Phillies. (my grandpa was from Bristol) Your city will be the first stop the new Civilian Army makes to force your allegiance and apologize for your jeers, whether they were for Joe or the bad call. It's okay, you will comply…We will learn to stop cheering and jeering and just attend approved public events.

Peter (CA)   November 10th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Excuses is still the realm of the McCain campaign.

Tom   November 10th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Paleo   November 10th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Owner Jeffrey Lurie was in the picture. They may have been booing him.

KJ   November 10th, 2008 11:46 am ET

CNN, I would think there are more important items/stories to post then this one about Senator Biden. Come on, let's be serious and post a column/story with some substance.

Let's talk about Senator OBama's and Senator Biden's promises for change and what they're going to do for us. I, as many Americans will not forget all of the promises the both of them made and how this country is going to "change". We all will be looking forward to these changes/promises and in particular, the 95% of us who will see a BIG tax cut.

Charles from Atlanta   November 10th, 2008 11:44 am ET

EaglesFan   November 10th, 2008 11:38 am ET

He got booed because he was wearing a blue sweater at an Eagles-Giants game…

Zach   November 10th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Seriously, this story is completely false. As many other readers pointed out, at the same time Biden was on the screen, the Eagles had a call go against them in the game. I know it's not really a big deal, but it's extremely frustrating that CNN put this up on the ticker. It is 100% and undeniably false. I guess I can understand how someone mistakenly thought the fans were booing Biden, but now that this misconception has been cleared up, how can CNN continue to have an untrue story on their ticker? Besides, why would Philly boo Biden? Philly went for Obama at > 80%.

Aaron from Ohio   November 10th, 2008 11:37 am ET

They boo everybody. They were having fun. They booed Palin and they booed Biden. Big deal. At least they're equal opportunity booers. No discrimination. Put a face on the screen and it gets raspberries. I thought it was funny.

Shannon   November 10th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Wow. Philly. Well, this is the same city where an Eagles crowd cheered a career-ending injury to Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, if memory serves. Philly sports fans are just vicious.

WATCH THE GAME   November 10th, 2008 11:37 am ET

JennK   November 10th, 2008 11:36 am ET

dwayne   November 10th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Hey it's Philly! They did boo and threw snowballs at Santa Claus once! They cheered when Michael Irvin of the Cowboys nearly broke his neck back in 1999! Who doesn't Eagles fans boo and jeer?

Surprised Not   November 10th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Everyone knows that Philly fans are the worst. After the game, they went to the hospital to cheer for cancer.

Get it right CNN   November 10th, 2008 11:29 am ET

The CALL not the MAN. Whoever wrote this should go back to watching Dancing With The Stars and leave football to the real American men and women.

Depressed Eagle Fan   November 10th, 2008 11:29 am ET

I was at the game last night, and the fans were booing the call or non call on the field, nobody even saw Joe Biden on the screen. It's unfortunate that this story was taken out of context. Philadelphia county voted 83% for Obama/Biden, as did the majority of the eastern border of PA. Say what you will about Philly fans, but we just celebrated a parade two weeks ago and are still cheering for our champions.

CNN Wrong Again   November 10th, 2008 11:29 am ET

This is actually not true. I was watching the game and there was a bad call that went against the Eagles at the same time they were showing the clip of Biden…I was with a room full of Eagles fans who were doing the same thing…booing the call and not really caring that Biden was up there…there is also a gap time for when the shot goes up on the stadium screen and when it is actually broadcast. I am saying this even as a Cowboys fan…give the Eagles fans a break!

With all the bad things being said about Sarah Palin getting a few boos is nothing. No one seems to care how they are STILL trasing her and the campaign is well over. Who cares about Joe Biden.

Obama is the one that will be getting the boos and that won't be too far off. He is going to "come out of the closet" so to speak and show his real agenda and just who he really is in not the too distant future. I understand that the media that traveled with him during the campaign found him distant and creepy. Whoa, how come "that" did not come out before the election?

Peggy   November 10th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Ah, the Obamabots are out in force "explaining" why Biden got booed.

We are going to get four years of "explanations" and "reasons" why this happened and that happened.

Maybe they booed because these smart folks are ticked that he didn't know who the President was in 1929 or that the TV was not invented or his plagarism, or the FACT that the diner that he frequents that has been closed for twenty years?

The media should have been booed for NOT reporting these gaffes, but simply booing Biden will do for now.

Walter   November 10th, 2008 10:32 am ET

This is the false story of the day. I have already heard it on talk radio. The fans were booing the penalty (or non-penalty) call on the field. They were not booing Biden. Whatever happened to real journalism? In the real scheme of things this is not important. But if the press can't get the simple things right – how do we expect them to get the important ones right?

Bogart   November 10th, 2008 10:31 am ET

The booing was clearly a result of the missed call by the refs on the field. It had nothing to do with Biden. Get your story right.

Jane   November 10th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Ridiculous reporting. I was at the game; there was a buzz going around that Biden was there, and when they showed him on the screen, he was cheered. The booing was to the call re: Manning's intentional grounding.

Arpan Shah   November 10th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Yes, they were booing the intentional grounding call, which happened to coincide with the cut to Joe Biden. This is petty, irresponsible journalism. I'm shocked that the AP picked up this farce of a story. And one would think that given all of the fancy electoral maps and hologram-technology Wolf Blitzer has at his disposal during the election, that nobody in the 'best politcal team in the universe' questioned why Joe Biden would be booed in Philly.

JL   November 10th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Anyone politician who goes to a Philadelphia sporting event gets booed. It's a very disrespectful and childish crowd and for some sick reason, they take pride in being mean. I didn't like it when they did it to Sarah Palin, or VP-Elect Beden, but it is what it is and politicians who go to those games expect it.

the fans were not booing biden. they were booing the refs.

LIP   November 10th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Perhaps they were booing Biden because of his last gaff when he let it slip that anyone making $150k per year was considered rich and would be taxed accordingly so all those do-nothings can get their entitlement program. Entitled to stay at home and let someone else make their living for them.

Iroko Nija   November 10th, 2008 10:10 am ET

CNN I thought the electio is over and am suprised you have continued to press on every newsless issue to be news. Biden is the VP-ELECT and we the democrats are indeed grateful to Americans and the world for their support for the Obama-Biden ticket.
