(CNN) – People sure to draw the ire of Philadelphia sports fans: Cowboys players. Supporters of any visiting team. Presidential running mates.
Weeks after Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin got a brutal greeting at the rink, football fans gave a similar reception to Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
As Eagles fans watched their team lose to the New York Giants Sunday night, a shot of Biden on the big screen elicited boos from the notoriously tough home crowd, the Associated Press reports.
Biden sat in Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie's box, taking in the game during his first weekend off since Tuesday's election.
Sarah Palin was booed when she dropped the puck at the Philadelphia Flyers season opener in October. But Philadelphia is a heavily Democratic city, and Palin is not a Pennsylvania native. (Eagles fans also infamously threw snowballs at Santa Claus at a December 1968 game.)
Born in Scranton and now a resident of nearby Wilmington, Delaware, Biden calls himself an Eagles fan but emphasizes that his wife Jill, raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, is the real fan in the family.
"My wife is a die-hard Eagles fan, so we watch every Eagles game," Biden told reporters during a tour of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in September.
"I'm not allowed to say this," he added, whispering to the reporters, "but I also like the Giants."
So maybe it was the fact that Biden had no real allegiance to either team Sunday night that drew Philadelphians' ire, or perhaps it was simply the risk one takes attending a game in the City of Brotherly Love.
Pretty sure they were booing the non-call on intentional grounding by Eli
Sounds like sour grapes to me.
I'm sure he lost no sleep...
Change. We're full of it.
Pretty pathetic and childish behavior from the sports fans... but that's nothing new from these guys.
Slow news day, CNN??
its probably b/c rich die-hard cowboy football fans who can afford tickets to an Eagles-Giants game are likely McCain supporters.
Yeah I'm a Giants fan and yeah I booed him... jealous?
"Pretty sure they were booing the non-call on intentional grounding by Eli"
Agreed. I thought that was obvious as the booing began before they showed him.
Well, I guess race isn't a factor anymore.
Lots of sports fans are like adult children who never really grew up.
CNN I thought the electio is over and am suprised you have continued to press on every newsless issue to be news. Biden is the VP-ELECT and we the democrats are indeed grateful to Americans and the world for their support for the Obama-Biden ticket.
Perhaps they were booing Biden because of his last gaff when he let it slip that anyone making $150k per year was considered rich and would be taxed accordingly so all those do-nothings can get their entitlement program. Entitled to stay at home and let someone else make their living for them.
the fans were not booing biden. they were booing the refs.
That's right baby, the G-Men go to 8-1 by CRUSHING the beagles. We'll see ya on Dec. 7th for a good old home town woopin!!!
YES WE DID
Probably Eagles fans booing because of the way the Eagles were
playing. Only in Philadelphia !!
Don't forget, Obama/Biden won the majority of votes in South Eastern PA.
They probably spotted Rudy Giuliani !!!
Wow ... Philly fans, they're one tough crowd, aren't they??
Anyone politician who goes to a Philadelphia sporting event gets booed. It's a very disrespectful and childish crowd and for some sick reason, they take pride in being mean. I didn't like it when they did it to Sarah Palin, or VP-Elect Beden, but it is what it is and politicians who go to those games expect it.
Yes, they were booing the intentional grounding call, which happened to coincide with the cut to Joe Biden. This is petty, irresponsible journalism. I'm shocked that the AP picked up this farce of a story. And one would think that given all of the fancy electoral maps and hologram-technology Wolf Blitzer has at his disposal during the election, that nobody in the 'best politcal team in the universe' questioned why Joe Biden would be booed in Philly.
Philadelphia sports fans booing? Oh yeah, that's news.
I guess that shows what American people think of politicians.
The fans were booing the non-call on the field as the TV coverage went to Biden. The AP should get its facts straight rather than trying to stir up controversy. Even my eleven year old could tell what actually happened.
Ehhh, I heard that there was a foul against Philly and that's where the boos came from. Objective reporting?
I don't think they were booing him I beleve it was the intentional grounding non-call on Eli Manning. His face just happened to come on the screen after that play. Don't think he'd lose too much sleep over it anyway.
Go Giants! Go Obama-biden!
NO, NO, NO – Jeffrey Lurie, the owner was booed!! Get your story straight...
