Biden booed at Eagles-Giants game

Joe Biden went to the Eagles-Giants game Sunday and got booed.

Joe Biden went to the Eagles-Giants game Sunday and got booed.

(CNN) – People sure to draw the ire of Philadelphia sports fans: Cowboys players. Supporters of any visiting team. Presidential running mates.

Weeks after Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin got a brutal greeting at the rink, football fans gave a similar reception to Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

As Eagles fans watched their team lose to the New York Giants Sunday night, a shot of Biden on the big screen elicited boos from the notoriously tough home crowd, the Associated Press reports.

Biden sat in Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie's box, taking in the game during his first weekend off since Tuesday's election.

Sarah Palin was booed when she dropped the puck at the Philadelphia Flyers season opener in October. But Philadelphia is a heavily Democratic city, and Palin is not a Pennsylvania native. (Eagles fans also infamously threw snowballs at Santa Claus at a December 1968 game.)

Born in Scranton and now a resident of nearby Wilmington, Delaware, Biden calls himself an Eagles fan but emphasizes that his wife Jill, raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, is the real fan in the family.

"My wife is a die-hard Eagles fan, so we watch every Eagles game," Biden told reporters during a tour of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in September.

"I'm not allowed to say this," he added, whispering to the reporters, "but I also like the Giants."

So maybe it was the fact that Biden had no real allegiance to either team Sunday night that drew Philadelphians' ire, or perhaps it was simply the risk one takes attending a game in the City of Brotherly Love.

They were booing Jeffrey Laurie, the Eagles owner over discontent for his underperforming team. Not directed at Biden. The fans are tough but not stupid. Go back to Tuesday and remember who they voted for. Camon, stop making news from non news!

As I recall, they were booing the bad call on the field when the camera flashed to J. Lurie and VP Elect J. Biden. I could be wrong, this is the town that booed Santa for gosh sakes.

  12. CNN Wrong Again

I was there. They are definitely booing the call. CNN needs to check their tabloid journalism before they post things like this. Pathetic.

I was at the game last night, and the fans were booing the call or non call on the field, nobody even saw Joe Biden on the screen. It's unfortunate that this story was taken out of context. Philadelphia county voted 83% for Obama/Biden, as did the majority of the eastern border of PA. Say what you will about Philly fans, but we just celebrated a parade two weeks ago and are still cheering for our champions.

  14. Get it right CNN

The CALL not the MAN. Whoever wrote this should go back to watching Dancing With The Stars and leave football to the real American men and women.

Everyone knows that Philly fans are the worst. After the game, they went to the hospital to cheer for cancer.

Hey it's Philly! They did boo and threw snowballs at Santa Claus once! They cheered when Michael Irvin of the Cowboys nearly broke his neck back in 1999! Who doesn't Eagles fans boo and jeer?

Or maybe he was booed becasue he wore blue.... the Giants' team color to the Linc! Come on Joe..... Green or something neutral – not the opposing team's color!

Wow. Philly. Well, this is the same city where an Eagles crowd cheered a career-ending injury to Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, if memory serves. Philly sports fans are just vicious.

They boo everybody. They were having fun. They booed Palin and they booed Biden. Big deal. At least they're equal opportunity booers. No discrimination. Put a face on the screen and it gets raspberries. I thought it was funny.

Seriously, this story is completely false. As many other readers pointed out, at the same time Biden was on the screen, the Eagles had a call go against them in the game. I know it's not really a big deal, but it's extremely frustrating that CNN put this up on the ticker. It is 100% and undeniably false. I guess I can understand how someone mistakenly thought the fans were booing Biden, but now that this misconception has been cleared up, how can CNN continue to have an untrue story on their ticker? Besides, why would Philly boo Biden? Philly went for Obama at > 80%.
