Terry McAuliffe has been laying the groundwork for a gubernatorial run.
Terry McAuliffe has been laying the groundwork for a gubernatorial run.

(CNN) — Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman filed papers Monday forming an exploratory committee to run for Virginia governor.

Terry McAuliffe was widely expected to make his decision after Election Day. The former Democratic National Committee chairman will now do a 60 day listening tour of the state.

In September, McAuliffe hired longtime Virginia political consultant Mo Elleithee to start planning a possible statewide campaign, should he decide to run. Elleithee spent the last year working alongside McAuliffe in the Clinton campaign as a senior spokesman, but in recent years he has also helped steer Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to signature Democratic victories in Virginia.

Should he run, McAuliffe will face off in next year’s Democratic primary against state Sen. Creigh Deeds and State House Rep. Brian Moran. Virginia’s Attorney General Bob McDonnell is expected to run for the Republican nomination unopposed.

Best man for the job! Not politically correct to criticize Clinton backers as President Elect Obama has his staff support lined with them.
———————————————————————————————–
Obama has picked about .001% of his staff/cabinet. What are you talking about??

robert   November 10th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

i fear this guy after they lost the nomination he spoke of going to rest in the magic kingdom.it was around that time tim russert also died… after a good job moderating a debate in which his candidate stumbled. i,m not sure he will win.

Kevin   November 10th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I VOTED OBAMA, AND I ABSOLUTELY HATE MCAULLIFE!!

HE IS THE KING OF SPIN AND NO GOOD FOR VIRGINIA WHO WENT SOLIDLY FOR OBAMA!!

Floridian   November 10th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Why doeal all the Virginians on this bord seem to bitter?

Wish the man good luck and keep the garbage to yourselfs.

Josh, Charlotte, NC   November 10th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Best of luck to you Terry! I can't believe all these people frowning upon you and Senator Clinton. It seems the obamabots, and yes I ended up voting for Obama, have not changed their ways. They are not following Obama's words to UNITE instead of DIVIDE.

Linda, Atlanta GA   November 10th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I saw a similar story over at Huffington Post. Most comments were negative about him. I Never liked him much either. Kind of goofy. Plus, he was always on Fox News saying they had the best coverage and were fair and balanced. What a jerk. Glad I do not live in VA. I hope he does not win. But if he does, at least it is only a 1 term consecutive state.

MD   November 10th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

All we need is another knucklehead spin-master like Mc Auliffe. He has an abrasive personality, and was completely unsuccessful in Clinton's campaign. I already feel sorry for the people of Virginia to have to listen to this guy while campaigning.

I hope Viginians have enough sense to send this guy packing.

Vic   November 10th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Terry McAuliffe and Sarah Palin are two people that really need to get a clue!
They are not credible!

The media's fascination with Palin is mindboggling, she is attractive, but what else is there?

CNN is becoming as twisted as Fox (Hannity, Greta) and the lot with their endless obsession!

President Obama won, he won fair and square. All the Palin focus in the world will not dim his light!

J Robinson   November 10th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

This guy is a total jerk. When he was chairman of the DNC 2004 he pulled some really stupid stuff. Rabid, partisan attack dog for governor? Not with my vote.

Hawaiian Dude   November 10th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

McAuliffe showed a side of him during the campaign that I'm sure Virginia witnessed. This guy plays really dirty and he's another one of those Clinton people who'll do anything he can to get elected. He's negative, dirty, and pathetic. I hope he never gets elected for any type of governmental office. If he walks, talks, and smells like a scumbag, he's a scumbag.

proud army and navy mom   November 10th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

after his down right delusions and funny math during the democratic primary, I don't know if this man is mentally stable to be a governor. He seem to live in another reality.

The very best of luck to you.
You are a good man, and we need you in office.
Go, Terry! Go Terry!! You are a winner!!!

This clown got rich off the back of Joe & Jane six pack democrat and a clinton ilk. But seeing how dumb democrat are in VA they may vote for a trifecta of misery.

Tom   November 10th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Uggghhhh! Seriously?

I love Obama and I love the Clintons, but McAuliffe is a dirtbag. Hopefully Virginia can find someone better than him!

Duane   November 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

I have feared this for the last couple years. As a loyal democrat and VA resident, I can't fathom a worse option. All of the political good will that Mark Warner brought to this state will be erased by the former fundraiser in chief. Anyone but Terry.

Toni   November 10th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

I live in Virginia and there is no way that he's going to get elected. I really don't see Kaine, our current governor, or Mark Warner, our Senator, as campaigning for him. Also, most of us Obama primary supporters are not going to forget the way he acted during the campaign. He will never be elected as governor of VA.

Jason   November 10th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I'm a Northern Virginia Democrat, voted for Obama last week, but I will be supporting Bob McDonnell for VA governor.

Terry McCauliffe is a loudmouth, and he brings nothing to the table other than a (D) beside his name.

STOP SAYING THAT ON CNN!!!!!!!!!!!"

His father was from Kenya, which is in Africa.

His mother was from Kansas, which is in America.

Barack Obama is African-American. Literally, and more recently then most African-Americans in the US today.

If somebody's family came to the US from Ireland during the potato famine, and somebody else's family came over after WW2, does that make the first family any more or less Irish-American then the second family?

Sarah, Kansas City, MO   November 10th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

If I lived in VA I would not vote for this guy. I think Brian Moran would be better. McAuliffe I am sure is a decent guy, his position in Clinton's campaign made him very divisive. I do not think he would make it if he won the nomination.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 10th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

This man and the rest of the so-called Clinton "advisers" did her a grave disservice by not confronting the disrespectful, degrading, demeaning comments rampant throughout the media when they first started. To let this go on and on without any statement from ANYONE including Pelosi and Obama and the rest of the turn coats is what cost her the nomination. These subversive actions hijacked her chances and instead promoted a wannabe who is now President.

Virginia Democrat   November 10th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

We can keep the Governor's office, but we need to run a Virginian to be Governor of Virginia. One who is known and desires to serve Virginia not someone who just wants to be an officeholder -and certainly not someone who after testing the NJ and FL waters decides to test VA next. We need Creigh Deeds for Virginia's next Governor!

Virginia Democrat   November 10th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I wish opinionated people would get their facts straight–Tim Kaine cannot run for re-election for a consecutive term. Terry's main contribution to Virginia is that he lives here and presumably pays taxes here. Otherwise he has no connection to civic life in Virginia that I'm aware of. He has great talents in raising money, which have been used in the service of Hillary Clinton's campaign.

I urge everyone to support Brian Moran, who has a history of two decades of service to VIRGINIA. He has served in the VA House of Delegates since 1995 and has chaired the House Democratic Caucus since 2001. He KNOWS Virginia and how it works–he doesn't just live here.

Just what the world needs, another political hack running for office.

Bill - Chesterfield   November 10th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Maybe McAuliffe has enough money to overwhelm Deeds and Moran but I wonder if he can win the general election. He will certainly be vulnerable to the credible charges that he hasn't much of a clue about what's going on in Virginia or what problems we face.

He places 3rd on my list of choices for the Democratic nomination.

Ann   November 10th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

One of the ruthless person I've watched on TV for a long time. People like him have no place in today's politic world. We need people who make things work not worse. One of the main reason Hilary's campaign went south is certainly because of him. Terry, people did not buy your rude messages and attitude the last time! why would they this time.

Terry is one of the brightest, most upbeat, cross-cultural and cross-generational professionals I have ever come across. He studies and understands the isues of governance, and studies hard so that he can translate those issues into terms everyone can understand. He is articulate, intelligent, hardworking, and outgoing; add to this mix his organizing and leadership abilities, and Virginia becomes the luckiest state in the Union!

Go Terry McAuliffe for Gernor of Virginia! Better yet, Senator!

Terry is an idiot. He represents old politics. If you want to go back to the past Virginia – or to a man who is pretty much nothing but a YES man, then go right ahead. I thought more of Virginia than this, but if you want to go ahead into the past that's your decision.

Terry M isa man behind the times and without a path. Why would you want to add that to your progressive state?

Grog in Ohio   November 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Good luck with that. Many people will remember McAuliff as the driving force behind Hillary Clinton's Republican style campaign. Not a good start.

Tim   November 10th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

When I read the headline I was hoping it meant that people were trying to convince Clinton to run after Obama has served two terms. That would be great.

I personally would vote for McAuliffe, but I don't really see his appeal outside of Northern Virginia.

What about Governor Tim Kaine? I really like him, he was the very first to endorsed President elect Obama.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 10th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Terry Mac in Richmond? Might be a tough sell here in the Commonwealth. Moderate Democrats win here and he is more on the partisan side from what I know about him. Senator Elect Warner, Governor Kaine and Senator Webb are examples of "very moderate" Dems.

Bill   November 10th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

To Donkeys have long memories too…

Yes, Tim Kaine is a first term governor, but Virginia law forbids governors to serve two successive terms.

I especially found Baghdad Terry funny when he went on Morning Joe with a bottle of liquor ready to drink straight from the bottle.

I say YES to Terry! I will support him 100% !

virginiamom   November 10th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

He's got a long uphill climb with original Obama supporters. He offended every single one of us with his brutal treatment of Obama during Hillary's campaign, especially at the end, long after she should have backed out. I respect Hillary much more that I do McAulliffe.

I think Mark Warner was a great Governor however Tim Kaine has done nothing for Virginia. We are in debt which never happened with Warner and Kaine is so wrapped up in the Obama thing and waiting on his place in the Cabinet that he has forgotton all about Virginia. Washington can have Kaine and the Rude Webb!!! And we don't need

Governors are limited to one consecutive term in Virginia – which is why Tim Kaine will be leaving office in 2009. (They can, however, sit out for a term and then run again if they choose.) The article mentions a couple of other potential democratic nominees. I would encourage Virginians to take a serious look at Creigh Deeds. From what I know of him, he's incredibly decent and already has my support at the early stage of the game.

keeth in california   November 10th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Anna, Missouri   November 10th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

It is interesting that Virginia does not allow their Govenors to run for a second term. They must sit out at least for four years before running again. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this, but it would definitely help to keep them from getting too much power that would be built up over time.
As far as Terry McAuliffe goes, I think he will find that he will do better behind the scenes of campaigns. It might be interesting to watch as he has to deal with the slams that will come at him.

Lee B, Virginia   November 10th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Dear god no…..Someone who played a part in sinking Hillary's bid is not someone I want as my governor. Hopefully Mr. Kaine recruits a better democrat.

The only thing Terry has going for him is a connection with the Clintons. Otherwise, he is very unappetizing. He was so busy trying to position himself for this Governor race he could no longer offer any comments as a political strategist on behalf of Pres-elect Obama. Now, he wants to strategize on a governorship? Give me a break, that's just like putting Palin as VP and thinking we will all be lead to the water to drink. NOT!

Terry McAuliffe is the single worst thing to come from the Clinton administration, and every moment he spends in the public eye, he tarnishes their legacy.

Why inflate the egos of the washed up Clintonians including idiot Al Gore by giving them positions. Oh well it does not matter to me. I'm a republican.

@ Donkeys have long memories:

Virginia term limits their governors so Kaine can't run again. Not sure how I feel about McAuliffe – I'm sure there are better Dems in the state.

Tom in CA   November 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Terry's just too partisan. I doubt that VA democrats would nominate him. If they did, then the republicans would gain the VA governorship quite handily.

Kathy, Richmond, VA   November 10th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Virginia Governors cannot serve two consecutive terms, so he will not be opposing Tim Kaine.

Janey   November 10th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

I feel a little bit better about the country knowing that the Clintons are propping Obama up. He is smart enough to learn from them and it sounds like he has accepted that they will still be the decision makers. I am happy to hear that he has ditched some of his far-left expectations.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 10th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Glad to see Hillary and Obama supporters back at each other again. That honeymoon sure didn't last long.

Ian Minneapolis, MN   November 10th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Voted for Obama, but there are too many democrats in power….america is about check and balance….we saw what happened when one party ruled the first 6 years of the bush admin….lets not let it happen again.

Virginia   November 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

To Donkeys have long memories…..In Virginia, governors can only serve one term, and run again later if so desired. Tim Kaine can go too, but I will take him over Mcauliffe any time.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   November 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Terry is definitely a partisan hack and he is definitely not a social or fiscal moderate and Virginia he will take your guns if elected governor. If you believe he is a moderate then you must beleive Nancy Pelosi is a moderate.

Spencer/VA   November 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

He doesn't even look like he's built to be governor here. Unless he can come up with some laws that need to be overturned in Virginia, such as allowing convicted felons to vote, he can kick rocks.

Laverne   November 10th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

If he will run VA like he help run Hillary's campaign, he won't have any problems losing!

ObamaPresident   November 10th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Why are the democratic leaders letting this idiot run for Governor I hate this guy I hope he loses, sad to say but I would rather see republican governor that to see this lying idiots elected.

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   November 10th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

If he is as successful in running for Governor as he was in being Hillary's chairman for her campaign, he should do very well…….I'm sure that Virginians can't wait to vote for his opponent.

Spencer/VA   November 10th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

This guy has got his head stuck up his rear. Jus becuase he's a democrat doesn't mean we'll vote for him. Us Virginians are happy with Gov. Kaine and we're not looking forward to replacing him anytime soon. I love VA. We have a democratic governor and two deocratic senators. McAuliffe needs to step off.

Virginia   November 10th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Good grief! Another Clinton rat running for office. Give us a break in VA–I would rather have Tim Kaine than this, and I didn't even vote for him!

Chut Pata   November 10th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

If it had not been for the dirty campaign of this guy, Hillary would have been our VP.

On the bright side, he dug all the dirt about Obama and left nothing for Republicans. LOL. So give this guy a break.

PDX Gal   November 10th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Fun stuff. Cognative dissonance is so often expressed in the nastiest, most hateful ways.
Anybody that wants to blame the Clinton Administration for things that happened well into Bush's time in office is lying to themselves.

Insulting me won't change that, but the insults are coming in 3… 2…

WILL   November 10th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

EWW!!! This guy is the worst DEM I know of second to Joe Lieberman!!!

I hope there's another Democrat that will run against him cause he is horrible.

Donkeys have long Memories Too ...   November 10th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Boy I could really lay into McCuallife after the way he conducted himself against my man Barack but I will invoke the 12th Commandment … though shall not MINDLESSLY SLAM other Democrats.

Isn't Tim Kaine a 1st term governor? Why is McCaullife running at all? Is he going to be opposing a sitting Democratic Governor?

Is Kaine headed for a cabinet post? What gives?

Ms. Jenny   November 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

I hope he won't be the only Dem running, because I can't stand this guy. As a rabid, completely-detached-from-reality supporter of Hillary, he told more lies in a week than most people do in their entire lifetime. Don't get me wrong – I'm more happy to be a Democrat than I have been in years. But THIS Dem? Sorry, he's someone we can definitely do without.

Christopher, Louisville, KY   November 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Wasn't contributing to sinking Hillary enough for this weasel?

longhorns4life   November 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

if he runs the same kind of negative irrational campaign that his boss runs, i hope he looses

Candy West Virginia   November 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Um, who cares? This man i have no respect for and hope he crawls back from under the rock he came from.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   November 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

GOOD LUCK, TERRY, WE NEED GOOD MEN IN OFFICE, AND YOU'RE ONE OF THEM!!!
