Dennis Madsen is planning to drive from Atlanta to Washington so his son, Adlai, can see the inauguration.

(CNN) - It may be freezing in Washington in January, but the city is a red-hot destination for people around the country and the world eager to see President-elect Barack Obama sworn into office.

he nation's capital is preparing for a massive influx of visitors on Inauguration Day - January 20, 2009 - and the surrounding period of festivities, galas and celebrations.

"We've had a tremendous amount of interest from travelers who want to be here for the big historic moment," said Rebecca Pawlowski, director of communications for Destination DC, Washington's official convention and tourism corporation.

"It's certainly safe to say [crowds will be bigger compared to] the last inauguration, just because whenever there's a change in administration and whenever there's a change of party, it always fuels a little more interest."

Some Americans began making their travel plans well before the election, excited by the possibility of seeing the first African-American become president of the United States.

I can't wait to witness history with the world. very excited... book now if you didn't everything is sold out!! good luck

For those that think the liberals are taking their money (by the way it is NOT your money); that the car companies should be allowed to flounder (3 million plus jobs lost – many of would be getting unemployment). To suggest that people should vote for those that really want to take your rights is ludricous and to lower the equality of life with hair brained ideas like – no taxes. Does anyone ever really think these ideas through? Obviously not. But I need to remember that people like that are actually a minority and I shouldn't let there negative views affect this moment in our history.

Genie, New York   November 10th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

The baby will most likely steal the show or part of the show from Obama

The Blessed One   November 10th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Oh my goodness what an adorable little baby.

30-m-PA-Democrat-voted McCain   November 10th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Who wants to see a fraud inaugurated? He's not my president.

chelle   November 10th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Okay my question would be "say what" to Dennis Madsen!!! Your son is an infant – like he will be interested or even have a vague memory of the inaugeration. Leave him with grandparents and go yourself. You know you aren't really going for him – you're going for you – which is great!

Paizley   November 10th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

I'm going. Wouldn't miss it for the world!

Texas Teacher   November 10th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

I'm a teacher.... so I will stay home and watch on TV after school... or on the weekend.... I will love to see it all. And I would love to be there.... but reality sets in! Life must go on!

Congratulations, President Obama and First Lady Obama... along with the Siblings Obama... and the new puppy whenever he arrives. What a wonderful time awaits us. A lovely First Family to watch and admire.... a serious intelligent President to heal the country... and, and... well, God is Good!

As long as we hold that in our minds, We, the People, can do anything. Just hang in their America, and trust that we are on the way up the mountain now. It may be a steep climb.... but we can do.... TOGETHER!

Mike   November 10th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

This Republican voted for Obama and will again if the GOP does not bring the right candidate in 2012. Personally I like Bobby Jindal. I know that Palin cannot win. She is tainted by the negative campaign she waged and the disasterous loss. And Romney is a Corporate Billionaire who is percieved to be part of the problem. Not the solution.

SweetPea   November 10th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

I booked my HOTEL back in Sept, after the convention. ON MY WAY TO DC.

Dave   November 10th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Please people, there is no getting it right in the rigged sham of the "two-party" system. More like one party, two names. We get the same thing. In the future we will be mulling over the same things as this past election and the others before it. No change. It's basically whether you want to head for the cliff at 70 mph or 40 mph. Because that is where we are heading. These guys from the two party system are bought a nd paid for and will listen to their true masters. Need a clue just take a look at the illegal bailout package to see the thieves giving it to the true masters.

I want to go sooooooo bad. Is there any low cost hotels? I have been to hotels.com and I dont know any areas outside DC. I want to be close however the prices are high and it looks like I will have to take a subway.

any suggestions? Please let me know I want to go and there is NO WAY my family is missing this

Mark, B'ham., Al.   November 10th, 2008 11:52 am ET

I think it is great people want to go to Washington DC, just remember it is safer in Iraq or Afganistan than in DC but the Mddsen family being form Atlanta should know how to keep out keep out of harms way since they have had a lot of practice in Atlanta.

Ifrah   November 10th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Farrell, Houston, Tx   November 10th, 2008 11:49 am ET

In our household we have already made and purchased our flight arrangements from Houston, Texas as well as our relatives in Phoenix, Arizona. Our children did mock elections in their schools and they deserve to be a part and they are especially excited about this event. Thank God we have relatives living in the area because hotels are booked or their fees are above the board. See you there.

Hey everybody, please come on up to our nation's capital. It is truly an amazing place if you have never been here, it is one of those unique places in the world filled with history. Come to see Obama make history, but also come to pay homage to fallen heroes that made this moment possible too.

Liberal and proud of it!   November 10th, 2008 11:28 am ET

Where is all the "Patriotism" the Republicans have been touting all this time? A Patriot would be hoping that Obama succeeds in digging us out of this bottomless pit we are in, regardless of party politics.
It has taken 8 years for us to get where we are. Anybody who thinks that we will magically be transported back to the top is foolish.
One step at a time and the journey uphill is more arduous than the journey down. Instead of constantly tearing down the man at the top a Patriot would be boosting him up.

T'SAH from Virginia   November 10th, 2008 11:25 am ET

I WILL BE THERE!!!! I am planning on staying with my brother – who lives in DC – and most likely will camp out the day before to get a good spot!!! YES I WILL because I CAN!!!

Linda32   November 10th, 2008 11:23 am ET

MissyRiver, I'm sure the cost is comparative to what has been spent in the past. In fact, I would think that since you are sooooo concern about taxpayers, you would be overjoyed about the spending that is going to occur due to this event. Just think, the DC, VA, MD economy could benefit from an influx of tourist.

As a Georgetown alum, I'm especially proud and look forward to seeing this in person!

C A   November 10th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Dave G, Minneapolis – So, you're not better off than 4 years ago, and I'll predict you won't be better off in four more years. But I guarantee that in 4 years 99.9% of you will vote for a Republicrat from the two parties and get more of the same.

Your on Dave! But if I win let me see. What would I want from you? Certainly not your attitude nor your pathetic narrow minded miserable life. But if I do win how about you take the nearest boat you can find to China on a one way permanent no-return trip. Then we could all say we are certainly better off no matter the circumstances with you gone.

82nd Airborne Division   November 10th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Would I go if given the opportunity. No – am afraid of crowds and
in particular the hostile crowds which may be there. I wish out
new president well and know he will be successful. Sure hope
he will wear the necessary protection gear.

joann   November 10th, 2008 11:18 am ET

@conservative...

Please don't walk anywhere near our president's inauguration...we don't want any negativity around this historic event....just stay home and continue to sulk.....

Bye Hater!!!!

fella from ohio   November 10th, 2008 11:17 am ET

@ sarah..look if u dont care then dont blog or respond
however, sooner than later u will have 2 get over it and move on

MissyRiver   November 10th, 2008 11:13 am ET

I feel the inauguration should be down played alittle – there goes the tax payers monies again. Have the inauguration and dinner/dance and be done with it. I understand that this is an historical event but they need to watch the spending. It's time to tighten the pockets.

Andrew   November 10th, 2008 11:12 am ET

Talk about a spin....let's face it – Bush was a change in administration and party too and Obama will easily exceed twice the interested people coming to the inauguration.

joann   November 10th, 2008 11:12 am ET

@SARAH...

IF YOU DON'T CARE...STOP RESPONDING TO EVERY BLOG WITH YOUR NEGATIVE COMMENTS...LET GO OF YOUR BITTERNESS AND TRY TO BE POSITIVE....YOUR DAYS WILL BE MORE FULFILLING!!

HAVE A BLESSED DAY SARAH!!

cnn please post...thank you!

If you don't care don't waste your time reading such topics. Utilize it to help build your "Country First" which is almost dead last in certain educational subjects. Imagine Africa is a country, and the sad part is that there are possibly millions of people from sea to shining sea who think so! Try getting a job with Homeland Security or the Foreign Serivce and you'll abe told "Dont call us – we'll call you."

Shari, NY   November 10th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Hoteliers, home owners (who are planning to rent out space in their dwellings), and restauranteurs will be licking their fingers. Even the peddlers and hawkers will have their moment in time. DC will get a temporary economic boost. I pray that this will be the dawning of a new era for the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Sarah   November 10th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Who cares?

mary, colorado springs   November 10th, 2008 10:48 am ET

I am very, very proud of my country to have elected a man other than white to the Supreme Office of the United States. It shows a great maturity in the development of our country. I am an 80-year-old white woman who has lived through many elections, but it is this one of which I am most proud.

This country is the youngest major power in the world, but look how far we have come and how much technology we have contributed to the rest of the world. The Old World gave us many things - music, art and literature - but the United States has developed far more in the way of practicality and contributed much to more efficient manufacturing, production of materials and inventions that make life what it is today.

We are a proud country and now have even more to be proud of: we are truly a Democracy where ANYONE can attain whatever they wish and the freedom to do it.

THIS IS TRULY A MIRACULOUS COUNTRY. BE PROUD OF IT.

Wouldn't walk across the street to that liberal coronation of societies misfits wanting us who work to share with them who don't!

Joan, MD   November 10th, 2008 10:37 am ET

I love Washington. The city is one giant history book. I especially like the view from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol.

This would also be a good time for any families thinking about enrolling their kids in any universities in the area.

Another Historic Event! This Will Be Another Great Day For America!

arc, Lugano CH   November 10th, 2008 10:31 am ET

That little dude looks just like his pops – if not for the daddy's specs. DC will be a busy place. Hotels all sold out. DC residents could make a little $$ boarding folks like Dennis Madsen and his mini-he.

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 10th, 2008 10:31 am ET

I would LOVE to be there just to be in the crowds!

Candy West Virginia   November 10th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Lisa   November 10th, 2008 10:26 am ET

I'm so glad I have tons of relatives. I'll be staying with them.

Obama and Biden, it's worth traveling.

Dave G, Minneapolis   November 10th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Quick! let's book travel to the place that continually erodes our freedoms and liberties.

Washington, D.C. will not go away, but our ability to travel freely, talk freely, and spend freely is surely being limited by the two parties in power.

So, let's bailout the car companies now too, and now that Northwest and Delta have merged (and are too big to fail) we should give them some money. And let's keep FISA going with wiretapping without warrants–that has been very helpful in spying on the conversations of our troops overseas with their families here. There won't be change in Washington until the two party system is not in control. We don't vote for Whigs, Federalists or Anti-federalists anymore, let's stop voting for the Democrats and Republicans.

So, you're not better off than 4 years ago, and I'll predict you won't be better off in four more years. But I guarantee that in 4 years 99.9% of you will vote for a Republicrat from the two parties and get more of the same.
