President-elect Barack Obama will meet President Bush on Monday afternoon in the White House.

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama will set foot inside the Oval Office for the first time Monday as he meets with President Bush to talk about the problems his incoming administration will face.

The meeting between president and president-elect is a historic formality, but it's also a time for serious talks.

The two are expected to discuss "a broad range of issues," focusing on the economy, according to a leader of Obama's transition team.

"It's clear that we need to stabilize the economy, to deal with the financial meltdown that's now spreading across the rest of the economy. The auto industry is really, really back on its heels," transition team leader John Podesta said.

Podesta told CNN's "Late Edition" that Obama will push Congress to enact "at least part" of an economic package before he takes office in January, but said the problems Americans face need short- and long-term approaches.

The president and president-elect also are expected to talk about national security and the war in Iraq.

Just look at that picture. What a beautiful and gracious First Lady Michelle Obama will make! What an impressive and intelligent President Barack Obama will be! I am just proud as punch to see what the American People have done! We have voted for what is best for this country... over politics as usual and over racial prejudice! We have chosen wisely!

We should be patting ourselves on the back, AMERICA! We did it! The Obamas will make us proud! I can't remember when I have felt so good about an election! And I was elated when Clinton was elected and reelected! Finally... We, the People, are waking up to what is best for this country!

Monroe   November 10th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Bush did what he thought was Right however it did not turn out the way he envisioned it. But we should remember something. The Dems. controlled both houses of Congress when Clinton took office, in 1993 the Republicans took control of both houses, So in 1999 when Clinton signed the Housing bill it was from a Republican controlled Congress, the Democratics did not regain control until 2006, and by then most of the rules were already in place. However whatever was done in the Past lets move forward in the future to get our Country back on the Right Path. Lets give Barak Obama a chance, if he does a good job he gets 4 more years, if not we give him the Boot and try again.

Scott   November 10th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

And in just four short years Obama will be moving back out of the White House. That will be the Change people will want when they realize they had the wool pulled over their eyes by this guy.

I agree with Stacy from Loudoun County. Bush is doing a gentleman's gesture. I think Laura, who is seemingly a genuinely nice lady, will do all she can as well.

**Even though politically I despise Dubya or 'W', I think he is a decent person deep down. Besides would you not be glad to get rid of the mess you made? LOL

DEAR LARRY.

from the bottom up means that when the folks on the bottom can get jobs and tax breaks and are doing well, then everybody from the bottom up does well. the people on the bottom make money and in turn the people(wealthy) on the top get a return on their money.

instead of giving tax breaks to the top(wealthy) and well you have the trickle down econimics theory. that doesn't help the little man.

REG in AZ   November 10th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

There seems to be considerable concern and pressure for the incoming Obama administration to reach across the isle, which of course the Republicans would love even though they sure didn't do it themselves, yet the Republicans all seem to be focused on blaming each other for their loss, with factions within the party positioning for control and then resisting anything the Democrats may offer. Don't they realize that their aggressive self-focus is what caused their downfall and that the people really want a responsible focus on the problems?

Somebody help me out with this one.
Barack Obama is called the first African American President.
I thought African American referred to someone whose ancestors were brought here against their will by the Dutch and sold to the colonists. I thought that the title referred to those whose ancestors were slaves. I also thought that anyone who came here willingly and became a citizen of the United States was simply and merican citizen with no other titles attached. If this is so, then Barrack Obama is not African Ameican, just simply an American. Anyone care to spin this?

Tony   November 10th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Pat – Overland Park, KS : It's not tasteless. It's the law. Air Force One is reserved for the use of the president of the U.S. Although Obama has been elected, to use Air Force One in that manner would be considered an improper use of government equipment/property. I think Obama can afford a plane ticket to D.C. so I wouldn't sweat it.

Peter (CA)   November 10th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Mark-

You can't be serious. The threat of drilling?
Nonpartisan studies showed that supply was NOT the reason oil prices shot up, it was the speculators being allowed to jack the price however they wanted. Once it was shown that there was no true shortage, prices came back down.

Drilling is a red herring. What will keep prices down is a move to other energies.

Pat - Overland Park, KS   November 10th, 2008 11:52 am ET

I was just watching video of President-Elect Obama getting ready to leave Chicago to go to Washington DC and President Bush could not even send Air Force One to pick up the President Elect.

How tasteless is that?

Not So Delusional   November 10th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Larry... I think we all get what you're trying to say. But explain this to us; how do you expect Obama to get you a job before January 20th. It just isn't legal. He's the President Elect. It's Bush who you should be directing the question to.

So although I sympathize with your situation, lord knows i've been there as well, i think must of us can only say that we hope that you had savings and prepared for such an event. If not, for that, you only have yourself to blame.

If you have saved, you need to keep in mind that NO ONE should expect a miracle to occur on the 20th of January. The situation of the country is just too bad. The economy will no doubt take YEARS maybe even an entire term to BEGIN to rectify itself. It's bleak, Yes.
But better than where McCain would have taken us.

Peter (CA)   November 10th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Nobama–

Why do you right wingers keep repeating this NONSENSE???
Blacks voted overwhelmingly for Obama because he is a DEMOCRAT.

90% of blacks voted for John Kerry. Obama's percentage was only a bit higher. Part of that is the Bush team did an outreach to black voters but McCain's team abandoned that because they knew they had no chance.

You want to look at trends? Latinos voted for Obama 2 to1, much higher percentage than Kerry got. Is that racism? Al Gore beat Bush by 2% among 18-29s. Kerry beat Bush by 10%. Obama beat McCain by 35%!! Is this ageism??

Maybe you should have some facts before spewing.

A hallmark of the transition of power and the change in families residing in the White House is civility. The Bush family and the Obama family are among an exclusive circle of families: those who have resided in the White House. Can't we put party politics aside and relish this momentous time for 2 families. I have always enjoyed the pictures of both families after this first meeting and personal tour, and reading how helpful the wives and husbands have been. This is yet another example of our wonderful country and the continuity of governance.

To chuckles199 – you will get your "free" health care–socialized medicine at its height! But remember, Hillary tried that one and it didn't fly.....and I don't want the government telling me when and where I can go to the doctor or have a surgical procedure or get medication I need. That is what you will get if we get this health care plan. As for tax cuts, haha, that won't happen. Obama will increase the programs for those who want or think they deserve "free" stuff, and we will be paying for it for long after he is out of office, hopefully in 2012.......Everyone calls for change, but it will be the same old thing in a few months, because everyone says what we all want to hear to get elected. When you work with the morons in congress, can we expect less??

Peter (CA)   November 10th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Noah-

And I would ask you to start. Maybe you should listen to someone other than Rush and Hannity.
Obama proposed "giving back"–community service–in exchange for a free college education. Seems fair to me.

If you seriously sit down and think about the last 8 years of George W. Bush's presidency and where we are today, there is only one conclusion left. This administration has done nothing, that's right absolutely nothing. George W. Bush sat in the Oval office for 8 long years and did nothing and was addressed as Mr. President while he mislead our nation and drove our economy into the ground.

to "nobama".

95% of of African Americans may have voted for Obama, but I fail to see how that is racist.

Considering most of the wealth in this country is held by the richest 1% of americans, I am surprised that 95% of everyone didn't vote for Obama.

Actually I'm not surprised, because I have visited West Virginia, Tennesee, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and seen firsthand how racist most of the whit popultaion is there. There is no way Obama was going to win those states.

Luckily he won despite all that, and he can start proving himself to ignorant people like you. It sure is nice to finally have an intelligent President again.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   November 10th, 2008 11:37 am ET

I hope there is not another stimulus package, as all the democrats will do is blame the increased deficit on Bush. We need to stop the train before the dollar is useless and we are like Japan doing a 10 year major recession. The Corporate and individual welfare must stop and the dollar strengthed and our national debt cut without raising taxes to cut investment. Also we must still drill since we know that in over 40 years of developing alternative energy we are nowhere near ready to stop our dependence on oil and gas. The drilling threat is the biggest reason for the downturn in oil prices and gasoline prices. Also we still need nuclear power as well as other alternative.

@NOAH - The only thing I hear about a "Civilian Security Force" is from extreme reactions by those against the President-Elect, or on unsubstantiated blogs with other conspiracy theories.

As for the community service, even if it is mandatory for students (I've heard conflicting reports) big deal. In order to graduate from my High School it was required that I complete a certain number of community service hours.

And regarding the Obama holiday? You're the only I've even heard mentioning it.

LIP,

I am looking forward to your first valid insight. I especially love how you completely gloss over the last 6 years. Sure, the Democrats have their hands dirty from Freddie and Fannie but the economy collapsed because this corrupt and evil administration thought it was OK to spend 10 BILLION a month fighting a war to enrich its friends (while cutting their taxes). Oh yeah, and all the while putting it all on the credit card.

If you want to criticizes Obama, go ahead but criticize for some valid reason. That's all we want.

M. WINNERS   November 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Off the story line a bit but here's a question that might be of of minor interest to some...

If John F. Kennedy was called "Jack" – a family nickname and term of endearment – by most everyone in the press and his private life, then why can't we call Barack Obama "Barry", his mother's nickname and term of endearment for him?

There's nothing wrong with Barack mind you, just wondering about why we can't (or won't) apply the great American tradition of nicknames to him as well.

Is it because people and the press are afraid of offending him or being call a "racist" over using a family nickname rather than his given Christian name all the time?

Comments anyone?

I know there are some Republican people who are upset about all this fuss but heres the deal. The rest of us are getting the first full night sleep we have had in 8 years. I really felt like nothing I did mattered. When the country is depressed it's peoples are depressed and in the last 8 years our country has become a nation of overweight, depressed under achievers. No one talks about the emotional and pschological affect the Bush administration has had on our nation but I will tell you what it reminds me of....it reminds me of the short two years I was married to an abusive partner. And now he is gone. When you love your country and believe in its promise and its potential then it is nothing but painful to see that patriotism taken advantage of and watching your country go down the toilet. You bet we are going to make a big deal about this.....as big as possible.

EW,

President Bush was dealt a GREAT hand, including peace, an historic budget surplus, and a raft of promising projects to undertake, not least of which was, and still is, alternative energy. Bush had the opportunity to make Middle-Eastern oil irrelevant, and he dismissed his best of opportunities, leaving it for his successor to belatedly undertake. The past eight years could have been far more successful under President Gore, if we hadn't been foolish enough to give Bush a chance.

Bush was the fellow who invented the notion of the "free-speech zone," the first time since World War II that anyone has challenged the status of the entire USA as one great big free speech zone.

Let's not confuse civility with the making of excuses for Bush's ineptitude and malfeasance in office.

nobama   November 10th, 2008 10:54 am ET

It's got to be difficult for Obama to find common ground with Bush. Obama is highly intelligent, a deep thinker, a self-made man, serious about governing, a hands-on elected official, devoted to getting the country out of the mess it is in. And Bush? Let's just say that Bush is none of these things.

It will be enlightening to see America get back to the rule of law both within their country and the world at large.

Just getting rid of illegal detentions and torture tactics will boost America's image globally.

Then perhaps somewhere down the road the U.S. will concentrate it's military might on self defence and not on aggressive bullying like the pattern has been of late.

Just think the money saved on military adventures could give every American free Universal health care with lots of money left over for other areas of infastructure. Wouldn't that be unique.

I am one of the citizens under our new President Elect Obama who did not vote for him. It is my responsibility to honor and pray for my new president. It is my responsibility to teach my children to pray for him. This is the beauty of living in a democracy. The fear I have with Pres Elect Obama and his staff comes down to a simple explanation. Any one who has been in any kind of leadership knows one simple rule of change.... (Drum roll). If it happens too quickly, it fails. You need to mold change carefully to insure its success. As Americans, it is our responsibility to do anything within our power as individuals to NOT see our country fail. Let's work for positive, molding change and not irrespective blind slashing change. I hope (since we never really heard) that this is the type of change Pres Elect Obama is talking about.

I have 3 questions, LIP:

1. How can repubs take credit (being the majority in congress during 6 of the 8 Clinton years) for welfare reform and a fiscally conservative policy that gave us our first budget surpluss, and not take any of the blame for the Net bubble bursting?

2. Clinton didn't catch bin Laden back when most of us didnt know about him. How did Bush do since bin Laden became Public Enemy #1? I didnt read the paper today, did they catch him?

3. Sub prime mortgages have been going on since the late Clinton years which means that Bush had 6 years, with a republican-led congress, to address the problem. Why did he wait until the housing market collapsed?

Its easy to look at half the facts and blame the party you dont like but, the facts are that both parties are to blame and it will take both parties working together to get us out of it.

CNN, for the love of all that is good, clean and wholesome, please post my comment!!!! grrrr!!!

OBAMA 4 President   November 10th, 2008 10:39 am ET

He'll be alright as long as he doesn't allow Bush to indoctrinate him with his vile ideologies. I wouldn't eat or drink anything given by Bush!!!

Headline: Obama's Homeless Aunt to get Lincoln Bedroom   November 10th, 2008 10:36 am ET

First time in front of the press without a teleprompter and he has to call Nancy Reagan to apolgize!!!!!

All you Sarah Palin haters.......Obama is NOTHING without prepared words for him to read!!!!!

Obama calls himself a "MUTT"...........the racial double standard has already started folks..........hold on for the politically correct express with the first black president in the White House!!!!!!

Ray Fisher   November 10th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Remembering a line from Sidney Potier's character in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, everyone is enthralled by President Obama's race yet he acts as a man, not as a black man. I think the press should abandon the first African American banter in favor of simply President Elect Obama. The novelty is getting very old as he is dealing with serious issues not related to his race. I'm simply guessing the our new President would prefer America focus upon the content of his message ather than the color of his skin.

IowaMom   November 10th, 2008 10:35 am ET

I've never been a very big fan of Bush and the way he's run this country, but I believe he is a good man and I'm very excited to see how they are both handling this transition so far. When he got choked up last week talking to his staffers, I admit I also got a little choked up.

I do wish all the bashing would stop, on both sides here. I heard someone talk last night and they said yes the President has the power to make changes, but a big part of the change also has to come from the citizens. If we unite and light a fire under all these politicians, imagine what we could actually get done!

Omentum   November 10th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Newsflash

President Elect Obama is already talking to dangerous leaders without pre-conditions.

katiec   November 10th, 2008 10:35 am ET

It is going to take time to undo all the wrongs Bush and the
republicans have done to our country and to us.
Am glad to see President Obama is considering overturning
some irresponsible executive orders, but, of course the
economy is going to be the biggest hurdle. It is going to
take both parties working together for our survival.
Will this happen? It hasn't for eight years!!

Tolu - Chicago, IL   November 10th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Hi George,

My name is Barack.. and now that the election is over, I am here to measure the drapes!

jt   November 10th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Bush says he is generous to invite Obama to Oval office, "Generous" Wow,20 % approval rate, eonomy in crisis, job loss in every sector, and Bush feels it generous to invite Obama and talk about economy, and should Obama say thank you, Mr. President Bush?

TJ   November 10th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Talk about the problems his adminstration will face? At least TWO of the problems are leaving: Bush and Cheney!

Michelle, PA   November 10th, 2008 10:30 am ET

To his credit, it seems like Bush is being gracious and cooperative about the transition. Eight years is a long time to hold that office, I'll bet he's as happy about his pending retirement as the rest of the world. Here's to a long, happy, and restful private life for President Bush!

mary, colorado springs   November 10th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Despite the formal amenities, I'm sure Obama would be happy to take over right now, and get started on his plans. Another 70 or so days can add insult to injury. Obama's plans are going to set the country in the right direction, and the sooner, the better.

YES, HE DID! YES, HE WILL!

Tired of W, OH   November 10th, 2008 10:29 am ET

@ KAREN: thanks for the tip on the Canadian documentary. Not that we have to see it or even a movie like "W" to know the DISASTER that Bush is leaving!

Bush LEGACY:

Over $10 TRILLION in national debt
OVER $1 TRILLION deficit!
OVER SEVEN years in a war, Iraq, never should have fought!

Bush is a rat. Barack is so superior to this guy, I can't understand how Obama can even tolerate being in the same room with this goof.

Salina   November 10th, 2008 10:23 am ET

I wish the media would let Obama be for a second. All the media speculation and stalking him and his family is ridiculous!! Leave the man alone, let him conduct his business. The media is hanging on his every word, he can't even take his wife out to dinner without being stalked and probed by the media. Some of it is expected but this is ridiculous.

Tom in Delaware   November 10th, 2008 10:22 am ET

As a man who voted for John McCain I pledge that I will give as much support to President-Elect Obama as the bloggers here at CNN support President George Bush over the next 2 months. Show me by your actions how supportive I should be....I'm paying attention to what you do and say, and that means the MSM as well.

The future is in your hands.

This will be Baracks hardest job, not laughing when GW proudly tells him all He's done.
-----------
Barack's already laughing - he doesn't need Congress or anyone - he's going to "rule" this country through executive orders !!!!!!!!!!!!!

EW   November 10th, 2008 10:20 am ET

Being President is a lot harder than anyone gives credit for. President Bush was dealt a bad hand and he could have done better. Hindsight is 20/20.

President-elect Obama is yet to prove himself. As President, he will not be able to vote present as he did so often in the Illinois Senate (look it up, its true).

EVERYONE needs to stop the venomous attacks and start working together. Democrats can't sit there and expect Republicans to just bend over and support nonsense legislation. Democrats need to make an effort as well.

Richard A. Spomer   November 10th, 2008 10:20 am ET

This will give President-elect Barack Hoosane Obama an opportunity too find out what President Bush has and has not shared concerning all information that will help transition team go forward. Then the President-elect Obama can clearly see first hand information which will help him in appointments of different individual choices towards cabinet positions for his Administration

From direct communication with the President, Barack Obama can configure plans which he may be addressed in his first 100 days that the Executive Office and Congress can take immediate action on! So this is a very large and impact opportunity for President-elect Barack Hoosane Obama can, and will experience!

JL   November 10th, 2008 10:20 am ET

I'm glad to see the President and President-elect meeting so soon. Some of you republicans need to take a long look in the mirror and figure out why you hate people who disagree with you so much. If it's because that's what your party has told you to do, become an independent and get a new perspective. Seriously, the hate and blame-game era needs to come to an end.

Mike Dallas   November 10th, 2008 10:18 am ET

With any luck Bush will ask Obama if he wants to start early, like today!

Doug R.   November 10th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfiwitz, Rice, Gonzalez should all be prosecuted for treason, breaching of the U.S. Constitution, and gross violations of U.S. and International laws and treaties.

Kevin   November 10th, 2008 10:13 am ET

At least I am seeing some decent comments here for once....but there is still hate and vitriol amongst the liberal left posters..... OF COURSE, President Bush will do what is right in handing over the reigns of power. We will expect nothing less of Obama four years from now.

Jazz   November 10th, 2008 10:12 am ET

We have to give GB credit for being in the White House even if he don't know nothing 'facts are facts.

Larry   November 10th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I hope one of the issues is employment,I'm out of work.I know the employment market is tough right now,so I want to go with Obama's plan, not the Republican "trickle down theory",but it's been imposable to find anybody at the bottom of the food chain that hires people,it seems they are all looking for work too.

Can somebody help me by explaining how this"from the bottom up"works ?

David   November 10th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Stacy – It has been said that the president-elect is welcomed into a group with very exclusive membership. The cardinal rule is that former presidents respect the incoming president, regardless of party, and support him. It maintains dignity and integrity in the office of the president. President Bush is obviously adhering to this rule, and yes, it does put him in a good light.

LIP   November 10th, 2008 10:05 am ET

and the story goes on and on. President Bush did a great job after Clinton left him with a bursting tech bubble and Bin Laden still running free and then of course the result of that...9/11 and then the Democrats left us with this housing mortgage mess because they refused Bush's reqest for oversight. Cheney and Bush, every Democrat and comedian favorite...what will they ever do without them?
Obama can't be ridiculed because he is, well I can't say, as anything anyone does or says will be perceived as racist. Looks like th Comedians will have to take a vacation for 4 years and the Democratic Congress will simply continue their vacation as always.

WoooHooo, two idiots talking about our future. How comforting

Good Riddance Bush   November 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Obama needs to get in to the Oval office early to find out how much garbage he needs to haul, how many fumigators to hire and how many exorcists he's going to need. Bush was a complete incompetent and did more to harm America than ANY foreign threats. I pray for Obama and Biden to clean up the debacle that Bush and his filthy cronies are leaving behind.

Abby   November 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Right where you belong, Mr. President-elect. We are so very proud of you! Yes You Can!!!

mitch   November 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

barack should just boot bush's butt out ,now!

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 10th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I am no fan of George W. Bush (really, nooo fan at all), but to his credit, he has done a pretty good job in this transition process. I don't know if he is trying to do this for his legacy, inherent goodness, or if he is just relieved to be a private citizen again...but he has been pretty good in the handoff process.

facts are facts   November 10th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I can't understand why Obama would be talking with Bush to be updated on what has been happening. Dick Cheney is likely the only one who knows what is going on and Bush just does as Cheney directs him.
