Edwards made hist first public appearance Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - John Edwards took the stage at Indiana University on Tuesday night for a discussion on the 2008 presidential election, but members of the audience may have had something else on their minds entirely.

After all, this is the former North Carolina senator's first public appearance since his admission of an extramarital affair sent shockwaves through the political world more than three months ago.

The revelation, confirming a months-long investigation by the National Enquirer, was a political bombshell for the former candidate, who espoused moral values during his White House bid and whose wife is fighting a public battle with breast cancer.

Good night Johnny! Go away and leave this country alone. Dirt bag.

Kathy in Elgin   November 11th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

At the beginning of the primary season I was truly having a problem deciding who I would vote for, Obama, Clinton or Edwards. I finally decided on Obama but would have happily voted for either of the other two had they won.

When news was released about his affair I was devastated for Elizabeth Edwards and family. But that alone would not necessarily prevent a vote for him. What DOES prevent a vote is the hypocrisy. I'm tired of politicians making a big deal of ANY platform and then falling prey to their lies and moral superiority.

Elizabeth . . . please be well. You're in our thoughts!

Glad Obama Won   November 11th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

We all make mistakes. His personal life has nothing to do with his professional responsibilities.

Bill Clinton did it......why not.

TX   November 11th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

He needs to go away!

Jon in Talent   November 11th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Mr. Edwards..........Stay in your fancy, fantasy world...

Jackie   November 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

If God can forgive us in our everyday mistakes who are we to hold anything against Sen. Edwards. Folks were ready to elect a man that cheated on his former wife and his running mate who was parading her unwed pregnant daughter all over the place. We all have skeletons in the closet. So stop judging others.

AM, MIAMI   November 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

I don't agree with what he did!! but if he want to come back all he has to do is move to Alaska, there you can be a convicted felon and still be a senator and run for a senate seat!

joanne   November 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

What a LOSER, I cant think of anything I'd vote him in for. He ruined it for Hillary...stay home and take care of you wife....your finished

Steven Cohen   November 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Edwards is a lying, manipulating, hypocritical, demagogue. I was hoping we were finally rid of him.

Greed is not good   November 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Go away you loser, we already got Obama!
We got the House and the senate! We certainly
dont need you! I got an idea! Change parties &
run with Gov. Palin in 2012 for President & VP!
Maybe ya could have an affair, Hey Palin is
mad cute!!!

anonymous   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Typical democrat! And, of course, as always, the dems will "forgive" him – just like they did Clinton! Idiots!

mtanne   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

John's time is over...disappear from public life and focus on your wife... if she is still speaking to you.

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

What happened with John Edwards was a real shame. But permitting a political comeback by a man who cheated on his wife after she had battled cance,r and who then lied about it, would be an even bigger shame. John, just keep working on behalf of the poor as you have done. You don't need to hold office to do that.

PDX   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

It's one thing to cheat on your wife, but to do it when she can cancer?!? This democrat ain't having it.

FactCheck   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Yeah, he could be Palin's running mate in 2012.

jozani   November 11th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

john edwards is a disgrace and no one wants to see him ever again. He should go away forever. He's disgusting. How could anyone forgive what he did to his wife.

Hypocrites?   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I would love to know how many people on here calling Edwards a cheating dirtbag have cheated themselves.

jimtranr in Oregon   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

He was a lightweight to begin with, and that's not counting the hypocrisy of his affair. No to Edwards for anything.

Beth   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

In don't care about the fact that he had an affair – that is between him and his wife... but he lied to all of us, publicly, and continues to lie. He has yet to explain the baby, and the timing of his affair.

Go away John, and take care of your sick wife!

Joe Regis   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

In politics, resurection is always possible. Beside he is a good Dem.

Billiam   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I agree with both of you. What Edwards did was personal and non-political.
Edwards is good for the country. Let the church judge his morals.

Sabuc in Atlanta November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Agree with Steve in DC's comment.

John Edwards has great political ideas. Why should his personal and non-political mistake keep him from bettering this country as a politician?

jason   November 11th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

HOW DOES ANY OF THIS AFFECT HIS ABILITY TO GOVERN OR REPRESENT HIS CONSTITUENTS!!! If I like to drink a beer when I'm sitting around at home does that mean that my employer can't trust me to come to work sober??? He is a human being just like all of you. In case your frail minds have not comprehended it yet, YOU ARE NOT PERFECT EITHER!!! What Edwards does with his personal life is his business just like McCain's personal life is his business just like your personal life is YOUR business. what the hell is wrong with you people. I thought we all wanted to talk about the ISSUES...

True Blue Ohio   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Yes, people have come back from worse, e.g. Monica Lewinsky.

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I don't know that he could ever come back. If he does, I don't think that time is here yet. He needs to give the public more time. He did not seem to be a "regular" politician - he appeared to be above the fray - and therefore, the public felt much more "betrayed" than with other policians in the same situation.

Jos/TN   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Ted Steven convicted allowed to linger, and reelected, Alaska and America should be up in arms, this man should have been stripped of his Senate seat upon conviction, local firefighters are stripped upon any conviction outside of driving offenses, are you suprised about Edwards' comeback plans, 99.9% of all policticans are super arrogant and self-serving

ran   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

He needs to concentrate on healing his family. Maybe he could afterwards become an advocate for the less fortunate of our society. Politically I think he is done.

boyhollow   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Seriously? I love how self-righteous conservatives get when it comes to this, and then they nominate McCain as their candidate! McCain had multiple extra-marital affairs on his first wife, then ditched her after his accident to marry his rich alien-looking wife so she could buy him a seat in politics.

John Edwards cheated on his wife. Is that terrible? Yes, of course.

Studies show that 60% of men and 40% of women will have an extra-marital affair, though, and my bet is that those who are the most vitriolic towards Edwards because of his are in that percentage.

It's always those with hidden guilt that shout the loudest.

Go Edwards. You're a good guy who screwed up. You're human, and that's part of what makes you great.

Beverly, NYC   November 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Edwards comeback, NO WAY!! His behavior ,while touting family values was inexcusable. An affair that results in a child may be forgiven in France not here. The thought of him and that trollop Rielle Hunter in the white house makes my stomach turn. She had to be promised something by Mr. Edwards to keep her mouth shut and go along while he denies he feel the need to visit at 2 in the morning.
He should do pro bono legal work for the poor to make up for his sins, make amends with his wife and children and stay out of the public.

Ravi   November 11th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

When I see all the sad comments you people make about John Edwards, I only see hypocrisy...let me ask you – whats the worse "sin" you've committed?

John Edwards paid the price by becoming unelectable in the last elections...

And for those with your holier than thou attitude...if you haven't already paid the price...well, watch out. It might just be around the corner.

Rather than slag the guy...give your opinions on why he isnt electable...not what you think of him...

For me, I think John Edwards could make a solid member of President Obama's candidate for the policies he promotes. As for having another run for Presidency, while his age may not pose issues, opposition will definately run his personal life to the ground if he stands for future elections/positions...so, NO is where I am on this topic.

(Ravi)

Ghost   November 11th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

John ran as a morals candidate. So in his lying he destroyed his political career. I liked him until his lies came out.

Chut Pata   November 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

John Edwards did not do anything that John McCain did not. John McCain dumped his dying wife for the young Multi-millionaire barbie.

John Edwards had always been a defender of rights of those who can no protect their rights.

Perhaps the media can forgive John McCain and Bill Clinton but not John Edwards because of his fight against crook corporations.

Mel of Alexandria, Virginia   November 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

The past has shown that many who condemn others are themselves guilty of the same or worse. We love to condemn the evil in us which we see in others. All have sinned and in need of forgiveness.

There is a wind of change blowing. Oh that all of us could be affected by its warmth.

Bill Clinton 2   November 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

John Edwards = lame.

C in PDX   November 11th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

unfortunately he's just another in a long list of phonies from BOTH political parties that have bamboozeled the public.

Lori   November 11th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

To Forget Edwards: He's A loser:

All I have to say is, Palin thought Africa was it's own country. ANY person holding ANY type of office should know something that elementary no matter who you are. She has no business being governor of a state and in all honesty the people of Alaska are completely out of their minds for electing her to office...though it doesn't surprise me, since a convicted felon is winning the sentorial race. Disgusting.

Steve   November 11th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Maybe! Americans have is a forgiving society and what he did, while bad is not the end all the end all. All of us has temptation of the flesh. Remember all those SUNDAY MORNING PREACHERS??????

I thought he would have been an excellent VP candidate for Barack. But now I can see how risky it was for the Obama campaign. No wonder they had to be so cautious. Cause if Obama had picked him as a running mate, and then this came out. McBush would now be the President Elect even with that IDIOT PALIN...

One thing for sure! He will be just fine financially no matter what.

diane ca   November 11th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Barack is hot   November 11th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

The affair is his personal business and totally between he and his wife. There are so many judges out here, it's amazing! I think Edwards has a lot to offer in politics and should be given a chance to come back and fight for the people.

For Edwards to attempt a comeback, would be laughable.
Stay home and care for your wife (remember her?), cheater.

The Party does not need you anymore John...not that we ever really did. No one will ever be able to trust a word that comes out of your mouth. Politics is over for you...we've moved on.........

Freeagent   November 11th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

The fact that he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife tells me a lot about his character. It's not just that he committed a "sin," it's that he apparently does not have control over his actions–that would be a problem as the President of the United States–not that others haven't had the same problem!

Nobody Asked Larry But...   November 11th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Mel   November 11th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I met John Edwards when he came to campaign at Iowa State University. What struck me about him is how he looked right past people as he was shaking hands. The word that came immediately to my mind was "phony". I guess my first insticts were right. I wouldn't even vote for him if he ran for local dog catcher. Why in God's name do people pay to hear him speak? Is there anything that comes out of this mans mouth that people can actually believe? I think not!

Dem in NE   November 11th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Is Elizabeth standing by him......jury is out, she's been out publically without her wedding ring. But that's their business – not ours.

That said – I think Edwards would've been an awesome Attorney General......but we don't need a scandal for the flailing GOP to grab onto.

Edwards needs to wait about 10 years to get back in the game.

mom for obama   November 11th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Not that I approve of the affair or lying about it in any way...but others have moved on in the same situation, so why not him? John McCain, Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, and numerous others have had affairs and moved on.

Edwards should have fessed up earlier, and we would have had a President Elect Hillary Clinton.

Bill Clinton was the first black president but his skin was white. Now we have a first black president who is white with black skin.

No wonder JJ cried! :)

I think it will say a lot about the media if he does. He was largely shoved down our throats back in 2004 by you guys, and what he did this year was not only reprehensible but largely unnoticed. This man shows poor judgment, and poor character. I wouldn't feel comfortable with him making conflicted decisions.

He had an affair – so what!

The thing that cracks me up is that we hang a guy for having an affair – yet we don"t let gay people get married. What are we afraid of – that gay people will conduct themselves like straight people?

Seriously folks – don't we have anything better to do than to worry about other people's sex lives?

As one person already noted, look at the politicians who've cheated on their wives and returned to national prominence:

-Bill Clinton
-John McCain (who even divorced his wife for a younger more attractive woman)

I don't condone what adultery, and it may be too soon since Edwards made the announcement, but I can't see myself shutting him out forever.

While not defending John Edwards, who are we to judge? Clinton made it through after his admission. Unfortunately, this is life, These are politicians, not clergy. I don't advocate anybody being immoral, but that has nothing to do with being able to lead. That being said, he has a long way to go to get anybody's trust again.

Did anyone notice that Sarah Palin received 57,000,000 votes. Care to imagine what would happen if she were on her own ticket?
All those Demo bloggers would be foaming at the mouth. Care to wonder why? Because they are afraid of her along with the Liberals and left wing leaning media. This was not a landslide victory folks, it was marginal. What would have happened if Obama not outspent McCain 6 to 1? Would he have won...I doubt it. If Palin runs for President, she should do the same as Obama and take private funds and then we will have a real horse race.

I live in Bloomington and work at IU. I can tell you that there is very little interest from the people in Bloomington in seeing Mr. Edwards. Many are wondering why he is even wanting to speak. He should be at home with his wife, who is diagnosised with cancer.

His political career is over – however I'm sure he'll speak or write a book.

Bart Kofoed   November 11th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I don't have a high opinion of John Edwards' moral character. Not only was unfaithful to his wife, but people who have worked with him directly say that he is one of the vainest men around. John Edwards is not someone I want representing me in any capacity.

Enough from Dallas, Tx   November 11th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I care about anything a public figure does good or bad becasue it is a great barometer of his/her morals. If they can lie, cheat or steal in their personal life then how are to trust them in their public life? Unfortunately, if Bill Clinton was unscathed by his Monica incident ; I'm sure those same people are willing to forgive and forget.

Lisa   November 11th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I love the way people stand in judgement of John Edwards. Get real. I say leave the guy alone. If his wife and family can live with who are we to have even have an opinion about this. Deb   November 11th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

More than the affair, John Edwards who was campaigning for the democratic nomination for the Presidency put us all in jeopardy by lying. What would have happened if he had been nominated and during the general election the affair would have been found out?

KK   November 11th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Sadly, probably he could make a comeback. The American public has an incredible ability to forget sins in their politicians and pop culture icons.....but, cheating on your sick wife to stroke your ego, then running for president anyway-knowing this story would eventually break-even though this was one of the most important elections in the history of your party? Disgusting. Here's hoping the American public draws the line and Edwards crawls back under the rock he's lived under the past few months (to remain there for eternity).

His affair really hurt him, especially while his wife is so ill. I think people can forgive an affair, but under these circumstances, it is alot harder. Would you at your time of need appreciate your significant othe wandering? He needs to lay low. Poss do some charitable work around the world, maybe help Clinton in his fight against world hunger and poverty. Now is not his time...It may never be!

Pat - Overland Park, KS   November 11th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I must say I was an Edward's supporter when he first ran for president, but after what he did to Elizabeth and his children I think it best he stay on the sidelines for a great while longer, work on his family and his problems at home before he tries to step back into the political arena.

He let many people down including myself and I am not sure he has a political future.

mitch   November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

he's not a war criminal. he didn't abuse power. he hasnt been convicted of 7 felonies. his personal problems are just that. personal. i still remember when he dropped out of the primaries. he announced it while helping in new orleans. he kept working that shovel for nothing except to help.people are so unforgiving sometimes.

Sabuc in Atlanta   November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Agree with Steve in DC's comment.

John Edwards has great political ideas. Why should his personal and non-political mistake keep him from bettering this country as a politician?

David   November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

No

Donna from Colorado Springs   November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

At first I thought No Way. But this country forgave Bill Clinton and he now has the reputation of being a great humanitarian with his work all over the world with Bush Sr. Time will tell how and if he wants to make a comeback in the political arena.

President Obama   November 11th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

You betcha! If Palin can run for VP, Edwards, crack and meth addicts can make a run for VP too.

Voter   November 11th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Just go away. Find an ambulance to chase. You're good at that.

Ken in Dallas   November 11th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Wow. Some of you guys are sanctimonious, moralistic, holier-than-thou blowhards. I understand the trust issues a thing like this can create, but to throw a whole man away because of a transgression that was really none of the public's business is an immoral act.

For those of you who need to thump the Bible to feel important, the lesson on stoning pariahs was:

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

So?

Anybody??

Al in VA   November 11th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Edwards is the kind of politician that we don't need. The kind who says one thing and then does another. I hope he doesn't harbor any aspirations of holding an elected office...stick with your charitable ventures John.

ananymous   November 11th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Absolutely, his personal life is not my business all one should care about is what ideas does bring forward and what he wants to accomplish as an elected official.

Brian from Fort Mill, SC   November 11th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Hey, here's an idea. He could run for President again, and choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate.

They could start the "Damaged Goods Party"!

My guess is that they will run against Sara Palin and Joe the Plumber on the Republican side, and Hillary and Chelsea on the Democratic side.

Who R We 2 Judge???   November 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Could John McCain run for President? Why not, anything goes in America!

IntelligenceOverPandering   November 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I am sure he can get right back to whatever he did before, on second thought does anyone know what John edwards does for a living, or for that manner what did he do for a living for the last 4 years.

randy - denver   November 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

To answer the question asked though NO! We had and have enough liars in our government.

Supreme Court   November 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

COME BACK DENIED!!

Grog in Ohio   November 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I don't recall Edwards' affair sending "shock waves". Bit of overstatement there.

At some point, this nation will grow up and leave a politician's personal life where it belongs... at home... and focus on whether the person is good for the country or not.

70 days till the end of the Bush administration.

Tom   November 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

McCain made a comeback after cheating on his first wife.

Citizen for forgiveness   November 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I think we should forgive Mr. Edwards. I believe people make mistakes, and a persons past should be just that. I think that people can feel bad enough about their mistakes without always having to deal with what someone else think.

Pat   November 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

John, It's time for you to hang up your political career and be good to your wife. You lost my vote when you cheated on your wife.

bababear   November 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

As a wife with cancer whose husband went "shopping" for a younger healthier wife after a marriage of 35 years, I think I can relate to what Elizabeth is going through. Actually the percentage of straying spouses of cancer victims is quite high. At least he is staying with her and seems remorseful. If she can forgive him, who are we to judge. His bedroom behaviour has nothing to do with his abililty to lead (look at JFK) and is really no ones business besides theirs. Lay low, work in the background for a while, then come back open and repentant and you could do it. We need good leaders too much to discard them for something like this.

Spencer/VA   November 11th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Sorry to say this, but No! He lost all credibilty. What would have happened if he became the democratic nominee and then the infidelity charges came up.....the republicans will still be in the White House. I'm glad the incident came up when it did. I believe he can still can serve his country, but running for president is out of the question. Although family matters are not the publics business, he blatantly lied about the affair. He should've used famous quotes such as "no comment," or "I have no recollection of that."

Kate   November 11th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

I think that the fact he cheated on his wife while she has cancer is pretty low. I was just disapointed that he talked about family and moral values but then would do that. So I don't respect him anymore. But whatever.. he's the one that has to live with his actions.

The Good Doctor   November 11th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

John, go wash yourself off in some HOLY WATER....then you can Appy for a come back.

Brandon In NC   November 11th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Obama Victim   November 11th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Connan   November 11th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

"Americans are very forgiving, and their memory is often short," Spellman said. "He can come back if he does it right."
I can't even remember what Edwards did.

Dee   November 11th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I think he can make a comeback..he isn't the first politician to have an affair and certainly won't be the last. His wife and family have worked out this matter privately and he doesn't need the public in the middle of it...

He has been very vocal in the areas of poverty and education and has a lot to offer if asked...we don't need him to give advice on moral issues...just business....

Jack in Tampa   November 11th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

John who???? Rings a bell but can't really place the name.........oh yeah, now I remember....he committed adultery.......NO we don't need him.

Al   November 11th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

if the former president of the US Bill Clinton can be forgiven forgiven for infidelitywhy not John Edwards!
We all human and have flaws. This man has been a great advocate for the poor.If his wife can forgive him why cant the average American
I say move on... John Edwards still has much to offer in politics

Will-South Dakota   November 11th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

John Edwards still has voice with the poor of America, he stood up for those over looked by mainstream politics, he has creditability with the forgotten and speaks for the poor. He should have a post in the Obama Administration.
If all the politicians admitted to extra-marital affairs who would be left in in Washington? Big deal big whoop the man is right.

Red, Red WHINE!!   November 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

This isn't about sex being none of our concern. Many people are dirt bags and cheat on their spouses. But I don't want a dirt bag in washington...let them be a dirt bag in their hometown, NOT representing me or cheating on ME.

This is about a politician keeping his word. He vowed at an altar to be faithful to his wife. He failed, he can not in any way EVER be trusted to do what he says. He has proven to lie through his teeth.

mb   November 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

I think this is good, life has to go on for all parties involved. People don't underestimate the people in Indiana, we are not that hostile, and to show you just how smart we are, we turned a red state BLUE!

Edwards need only to seek forgiveness from his family and God. Here in Indy, we will receive and accept all the wisdom he has to give for our betterment.

Shari, NY   November 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

JJ – I hate to disappoint you but the concensus of opinion re Kerry's resurgence seems to be "NAH"! You see, even us Democrats know when to call a spade a space even if it hurts a bit. By the way, I wonder what will become of that recovering alcoholic politician who backslid and decided to christen a party crowd with urine. Why do these people even think of holding public office?

Nancy in San Jose   November 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Are you kidding? Of course John Edwards can make a come back. If it didn't work he can always run for Ted Stevens' United States Senate seat. "Come to Alaska where the water is blue, the ice is white, the polar bears are drowning and you can be a felon and get elected by the loving people of this vast state."

Deb in Colo   November 11th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

If McCain can cheat on AND leave his 1st wife for Cindy Lou – I think John can over come a brief affair.

Kevin in MN   November 11th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

He needs us more than we need him. I think he should find something new to do. Perhaps he could use his legal skills to help people who need help. His political career is over.

Holly   November 11th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I was a huge Edwards supporter and was hugely disappointed in his behavior. He has so much to offer the country, but he undermined his own opportunity to make a difference. He had to have known that if this came out, his ability to make a contribution would be compromised. I just can't see how it was worth it–he damaged himself, his marriage, and his future as a strong voice for the less fortunate among us. That said, I do think he'll be able to come back in some way, but not yet, and not as prominently as people like me had been hoping for.

Rob   November 11th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Well, he's got a new kid he needs to take care of, and if he decides he wants to actually be the husband he failed at trying to convince everyone he was, he's gonna need to do something. I mean hey, you can only chase ambulances for so long. Besides, that 20,000 + sq. ft. mansion takes a lot of electricity to run. That, and the posh LA hotels where he goes for his trysts can get a little pricey too. Don't forget hush money as well. Hey, gots ta pay them bills.

Barbara in NC   November 11th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I'd like to see a policy and geography debate between him and Palin. The winner gets to stay in the news.

Is that enuff?

Tom in CA   November 11th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

This is a non-starter, so that makes it a big, fat NO!

If he wants to get back into the arena, then he'll need to start in North Carolina first. LOL John.

FBI   November 11th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

All "John" are cheaters!!

Ex-Republican for Obama   November 11th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

If you will cheat on the one you are supposed to be with until 'death do you part', then you are not capable of keeping your word to ANYONE, especially the american public. He is a discredit to his party, and to america's belief in loyalty. He should retire from politics until he finds his morals and is capable of keeping his promises (at one point, on some altar, he made a promise, and did not keep it: FAILED)

Georgia Gal   November 11th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I am formerly a supporter of John Edwards, but he just needs to go away. He needs to stop trying to be a politician and concentrate on his marriage and his family.

J J   November 11th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Everyone who said he should be back and everything is forgiven I am sure were the same people who were bashing McCain for leaving his first wife for Cindy. Hypocrites.

To: Dave Harlow   November 11th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Dave,

It doesn't matter his is bad, nasty or lies as soon as it's his private life, all we care is he is able to do some good jobs for the country. All those republican values, faith, family value, are personal stuffs, you believe god and I don't etc, it's a personal matter, what it has to do with managing a country or local government. It make me sick these Republicans to bring these to public. Looks at the evangelical leaders , bunch of sex offenders, Bush had lots of faiths, has he made the country better ?

Dave   November 11th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

i hope so.....but i suspect a successful return will require very public support from Elizabeth. if she can "forgive" senator edwards, then the public should too. his affair is a different issue than his public service.

senator edwards is one of the very few voices for the working poor. he understands social computing and the impact it is having on our world and the future of the usa. he understands the education system and had one of the most progressive, yet rooted in reality, platforms for public education.

so yes. time to welcome john back to the democratic party.

Salt   November 11th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I think the wounds are still a bit fresh.

Ex-Republican for Obama   November 11th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

No

Greg, San Francisco, CA   November 11th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I liked Edwards but can't any way for him to regain the public's respect. Very disappointed in him.

Blue is my favourite colour   November 11th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Dear Forget Edwards:

How about we forget Palin and her pregnant daughter and the pending shot gun wedding to redneck Levi (not likely to marry her anyway) her son who chose to go into the military as an alternative to going to prison on a drug charge, forget Todd, the secessionist.

I suggest the country turn the light out on this dimwit from Alaska. She and McCain were handed their heads on a platter in this election, and if you think all will be forgiven with her–you're mistaken.

Ken - Hudson Florida   November 11th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Personally, his sex life is his and his wife's business and none of mine. If more people thought that way a lot of non-important issues would just dissapear from the headlines. I believe that if he was good at his job then he can make a comeback, If he wasn't good at his job then he should forget about trying.

California Gold   November 11th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I know Mr. Edwards has a lot to offer politics and I had high hopes he would head up health care reform efforts for the Obama administration, since that is a legal forte, but I think his career in public service is shot to smitherines with the revelation of his extramarital affair while his wife is battling cancer. All the good impressions and goodwill he built in his public life has been destroyed. I wish him the best but prefer that he just go away–quietly (unlike Sarah Palin).

Ben Albert   November 11th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I am life long democrat and a trial lawyer, and even I think any talk of a comeback is ridiculous. One of the best things he had going for himself was Elizabeth's strength, intelligence, and guts.

He's cooked and we've moved on.

Bushniks   November 11th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

It's great to see the GOPpers complaining here.

That's really all you have left isn't? I'd feel sad if your party hadn't taken us to this place... as it always does.

Check the records on job loss and deficit. The GOP holds all records.

Look it up... unless of course, you are afraid of the truth.

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 11th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

NO. He has lost all respect, by cheating on his ailing wife. He is despicable. He should concentrate on healing his marriage and his children from the pain and heartache he caused.

Kevin   November 11th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

No. Didn't work for John Hoyes, won't work for John Edwards.

Maggie from Virginia   November 11th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

John Edwards is selfish. Not only did he cheat on his wife, he put the entire democratic party in jeopardy. Thank goodness he was exposed prior to the final stages of the election.

Ruthless Robin   November 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

No way.....it is definitely too soon.....go back to the kennel!

Katie - Atlanta   November 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I don't see why he can't make a come-back. What he did was personal between him and his wife. We don't know what the rules are/were in their marriage. Due to her illness, for all we know, she gave him permission to find another lover.

It's real easy for use to judge someone else's life from the outside looking in. But in reality, it's really none of our business.

I don't condone what he did, but he didn't make any promises to me. So who am I to get angry about it? His wife has chosen to stay with him. If she can forgive him, why can't the rest of you?

Jeff W.   November 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

What a scumbag. He should just move to an island and never be heard from again.

John in NewYork   November 11th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Unless Mr Edwards is running to be my Brother-Inlaw his sex life is none of my business or my concern. I only care about what his ideas are and how he pursues them and if they would help me. The latter part is debatable but we will see.

This guy lied repeatedly throughout the primaries. Had he ended up winning the Democratic nomination and everything came out, he would have dragged down the entire ticket. Forget Edwards: He's A loser   November 11th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Sarah Palin is the future-we view Obama as an interim President while we wait for Sarah Barracuda-The Thrilla from Wasilla-–in 2012.

No woman in the U.S is more accomplished at the age of 44--Mayor, Governor with the highest approval rating in the U.S., Member Alaskan Energy and Conservation Board, Candidate for VP–and all while raising 5 kids.

I suspect her critics are far less accomplished than she is.

Mia and Mike   November 11th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I don't think so. Everything the American people loved and admired about him went down the tubes when it was revealed he had an ffair. He's still a gret guy, but unfortunately has lost admiration for being the inspiring leader he once was.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   November 11th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Newt Gingrich is staging a comeback to lead the Republican party and he also committed audltry and headed the call to impeach Clinton. The Republicans aren't deny Newt so why should Democrats or any Republican deny Edwards. There are many more but just haven't been caught.

Michelle, PA   November 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

This was not your run of the mill affair. I don't think Americans will easily forget the man who fought poverty and talked about "family values" with one hand while he was sleeping around on his cancer-stricken wife with a highly paid, underworked staffer with the other. He's over.

Camille - Richmond, VA   November 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

As a moderate democrat and a proud Obama supporter let me just say that I wouldn't vote for John Edwards for dog catcher. He cheated on his wife while she was battling cancer. That's all I need to know about him.

FreeNLovIt   November 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I'm thankful God doesnt condemn all of us for one act of sin or we will all be in trouble.

JL   November 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Nope. The republicans are very critical of every move a democrat makes under their "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy and won't allow a person that had an affair to go anywhere in politics, unless he becomes a republican, of course.

FreeNLovIt   November 11th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Of course. He needs to apologize and not repeat it again. There's too many problems we need talents to help build America.

Daniel   November 11th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Not anytime soon. Americans were willing to forgive Bill Clinton for his infidelity, but his wife didn't have cancer.

And as a former Edwards supporter, I'm OK with that.

Lady in GA   November 11th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
