Clinton and Obama campaigned together this fall.
Clinton and Obama campaigned together this fall.

(CNN) — Two sources close to the Obama transition team tell CNN that Senator Hillary Clinton’s name has been mentioned as a possible candidate for Secretary of State.

One source close to Hillary Clinton tells CNN that as of early yesterday, Senator Clinton had not been contacted by the transition team about a possible cabinet appointment. This same source tells CNN that Senator Clinton would not necessarily dismiss such an offer.

A spokesman for Hillary Clinton, Philippe Reines, tells CNN “Any speculation about cabinet or other administration appointments is really for President-Elect Obama's transition team to address.”

On Monday night, while walking into an awards ceremony in New York, Senator Clinton was asked if she would consider taking a post in the Obama administration. She replied, "I am happy being a Senator from New York, I love this state and this city. I am looking at the long list of things I have to catch up on and do. But I want to be a good partner and I want to do everything I can to make sure his agenda is going to be successful."

Is this a joke? Is this the change we've been waiting for? If I had know Obama was going to bring in all Clinton people I would have voted for Hillary Clinton. This is a big mistake!

andrea   November 14th, 2008 1:05 am ET

Hillary Clinton would be excellent and well qualified in this or another highest level presedential post.

30-m-PA-Democrat-voted McCain   November 14th, 2008 1:00 am ET

This is great news! I think she should have been the nominee, but this will do.

Fiston L   November 14th, 2008 12:52 am ET

I think obama idea isn't bad to choose hillary clinton as secratary of state ,we all know politics is like soccer team ,even thougth they did fight during race that not the end of the world ,i'll encourage barack obama to realise it , after all she's a brilliant lady and she was first lady for 8years .she is good to be.

rose   November 14th, 2008 12:51 am ET

I do not think it is a good idea for Clinton to be Secretary of State. I think she should be in Health Care or the Supreme Court. But I would rather see Bill Richardson as Sect. of State. World leaders love him.

Phil   November 14th, 2008 12:51 am ET

YOU GUYS ARE ALL MAD!!!

Arabs were right when I heard someone said: "No matter who gets elected, the US foreign policy will stay the same". It is an ignorant, arrogant, selfish, aggressive, not good for any one policy, except maybe for Israel. Now, appointing Clinton as a SOS would be a great "change" back to the policy that was before Bush, which was the exact same foreign policy, as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Yeah, what a "change". If that happens, I want my Obama's campaign donation back!

Phil   November 14th, 2008 12:49 am ET

In the name of all that’s holy, I hope this isn’t true. We saw how diplomatic Hillary was in the primaries. She dictates rather than negotiate. She’s a fighter, not a uniter. Lots of better places for her to put that talent to use — like maybe the Senate? Hillary the Global Free Trader is NOT best to lead reforms for fair trade.

Jesse   November 14th, 2008 12:47 am ET

So… Wheres the change? His cabinet is nothing but Washington Insiders.

I dont supprt Hillary for Secretary of State. Let hers tay in the Senate to run again in 2012 when America finds out first hand that Obama was not the right choice.

SC   November 14th, 2008 12:44 am ET

Oh, Mr. President-elect, please don't let her down this time but I fervently believe you will always do things for the best of the country.

Paul   November 14th, 2008 12:39 am ET

If she is to be appointed to a position, it should be a non-cabinet, arms length role from the President. There would simply be too much attention and emphasis (justified or otherwise) placed on her and her hubby in terms of President Obama's foreign policy positions.

Hugh   November 14th, 2008 12:38 am ET

How about Colin Powel for SOS ? Wouldn't it be fabulous ?

Elizabeth   November 14th, 2008 12:34 am ET

Right on Hillary!!! You would have been a great president but since it didnt happen …. this is the next best for you as Secretary of State, and you deserve it! However, New York needs a great senator like you too! How can anyone in their right mind compare you to Sarah Pailin … she is absolutely no way near your league …. you are to far ahead. Remember … Hillary … you are one of the best ….

Joel Andrew Nagel   November 14th, 2008 12:30 am ET

Christiane Amanpour for Secretary of State.

Has it not occured to the Obama transition team that the most qualified person, by far, for Secretary of State is CNN's
Christiane Amanpour?

Sydnee Doherty   November 14th, 2008 12:23 am ET

What a wonderful thing that would be! Hilary is perfect for the job. International leaders already know her and respect her. She is so knowledgabls, she could jump right in. She would be on top of all issues and prepared to provide proactive leadership versus reactive. What a change from an ex-tennis partner who never gained international respect after 8 years of trying very hard.

Pete Collins   November 14th, 2008 12:20 am ET

In what evil parallel world would it be a good idea to put the Anti-Christ in charge of our diplomacy? HC is the hound from hell who damaged Obama more than the Republicans on foreign policy — and she did it in an obvious effort to cripple his candidacy enough that he could never win in November, thus ensuring she could run in 2012. She's only in this for herself, not her party, not her country. We cannot afford any more self-aggrandizing jerks in our government right now.

Damir Kentucky   November 14th, 2008 12:20 am ET

Hillary is most qualified ! But remember, she ought to be president and not Obama ! Hillary will always be number 1

Independent   November 14th, 2008 12:15 am ET

I personally hope that the offer is valid and that Senator Clinton accepts.

phil   November 14th, 2008 12:11 am ET

Obama needs an aggressive & efficient Secretary of State. I do not know
weather Hillary Clinton meets the criteria . Health care would be better
as she has some experience in it,
As far as her future is concerned , the Political truth is that she needs Obama ,more than Obama needs her.

Jose Nsasi, ON   November 14th, 2008 12:11 am ET

I will be very pride of "President-elect Sen." Obama if this become true.
Is not the change we need but is a smart decision for the party.

Anonymous   November 14th, 2008 12:09 am ET

I LOVE IT! She would have made a great President but she will make a great SSofS. Smart and a natural at healing wounds.

Lisa   November 14th, 2008 12:09 am ET

Although she is not my first choice, Hillary would not be a bad choice. It shows that he is sincere when he says that he will listen to those who don't always agree with him. However, I disagree with those who say she deserves it. She was vastly unfair to Barack even condescending to him during the campaign. This opened up the flood gates for more attacks from John McCain during the general election. On the other hand, Bill Richardson has been very loyal in his support of Barack risking his friendship with the Clinton's to side with him. He also has more foreign policy experience. I say, if he wants Hillary in his cabinet for being supportive at the end so be it, but give her Secretary of Health and Human Services so that she can work on health care. However, Bill Richardson would be by far the smarter choice for secretary of state.

sandee in Portland   November 14th, 2008 12:09 am ET

I strongly support Hillary and always have, but do not feel she would be a good match for this cabinet position. Think we need someone with more foreign policy experience like Hagel.

Anonymous   November 14th, 2008 12:07 am ET

Kerry for SoSt? Major NO
Clinton for SoSt? Minor NO
Richardson for SoSt? possibly
Best Choice: Max Cleland !!!

nuff sed

Grace   November 14th, 2008 12:06 am ET

Will Bill Clinton hang on as co-secretary of state and speaks his policy sometimes as he would be interviewed frequently if Hillary indeed gets that title? Bill has nothing to lose!

Lost in Texas   November 14th, 2008 12:06 am ET

Oh boy..I bet the far right is licking their chops over this one. The radio talk shows are writing their material right now as we speak.

mom for obama   November 14th, 2008 12:02 am ET

Hillary is a bright woman with lots of support. Offering her a Cabinet position would help appease some of her supporters and she'd do a good job. My only concern would be Bill getting in the way.

Peter   November 14th, 2008 12:00 am ET

Hillary for SOS? Thanks, but no thanks. John Kerry is, by far, the best choice for these troubling times.

Dee n AL   November 13th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

I do not think it is a good idea for Clinton to be Secretary of State. I think she should be in Health Care or the Supreme Court. But if she is Secretary of State she would be able to complain about the administration in 2012.

Pam   November 13th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

I hope she doesn't have to go to Bosnia and dodge more sniper fire.

jack   November 13th, 2008 11:55 pm ET

There is only one choice for Sec. of State. Bill Richardson. Let Hillary stay in the Senate and four years from now become a private citizen. That is the job she is best qualified to hold.

Peter (CA)   November 13th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Dan, FL—

Uhhh, you wandered into the wrong thread. No one here wants to hear about Satan….sorry, I mean Dick Cheney.

If you believe he has made us safer, you are delusional. The imperialistic policies that Cheney pushed and Bush let go have put us in the crosshairs of more and more extremists. We have trod on their sacred soil, we have killed their families, and we have done so with impunity. We call it "nation building", they don't.

Obama may not be able to repair that damage but I bet he is able to bring this country goodwill from its former friends once again.

G.R.I.T - Girl Raised in the South   November 13th, 2008 11:51 pm ET

I really wish people would get off the Ron Paul bandwagon. What is so great about this guy? He's two-faced if you ask me (not that anyone did, of course). He's for smaller, limited government, yet wants to interfere in a woman's personal reproductive choices and what goes on in the bedrooms and hearts of grown adults. Hmmmm, doesn't sound like small government to me. Sounds like nosy big brother, but with low taxes and no regulation. Thanks, but no thanks.

brenkatz   November 13th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

I trust President Obama's decisions,
if he thinks that Senator Clinton would be a good Secretary of State then I agree 100 %

JC   November 13th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

Do you know anything about politics? Nobody needs to confirm any of the President's appointments in his cabinet. Get your facts straight before you start sounding like Sarah Palin.

jeff   November 13th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

Now thats a good idea.

ObamaClintonfanster   November 13th, 2008 11:46 pm ET

Outstanding choice! She's brilliant, eloquent, has already established a comfortable and respectable rapport with foreign leaders, and has been fully vetted out the kazoo. Do it Hillary!

Melissa   November 13th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Hmmm…. it would be a good move. Despite the fact that I think Hilary is just as childish as McCain.

Paul   November 13th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

Sen. Clinton is an excellent choice for Secretary of State!! I hope if she is offered the position, she says yes.

Tiff of lithia springs   November 13th, 2008 11:41 pm ET

I do like Hillary but I think I like Bill Richardson more. I do remember her fight in the 90s for healthcare. Even though as a health provider i'm doubtful the the universal health care approach will receive a warm reception I think should would do the crusade best in the Senate.

Peter (CA)   November 13th, 2008 11:41 pm ET

I would rather Hillary stay in the Senate and be named majority leader. That would be a position of great power for her. For secretary of State, I say Sam Nunn.
He's been in Washington a while but a tough negotiator who can be the face of Obama's foreign policy.

KJL   November 13th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

At this very minute Sarah Palin is flat on the ground, screaming and pounding her fists……….

At least she would be if she read the news.

Jeff   November 13th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

It is a fallacy to believe that the decision belongs solely to Clinton and Obama. Congress must confirm the president's cabinet appointments.

Independent   November 13th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

I don't know? I think she would be better heading the health care system since that is her strong point isn't it?

Rob   November 13th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

She could get anything she wanted from visiting diplomats – just invite them for a nice stroll in Ft Marcy Park

primarywatcher   November 13th, 2008 11:32 pm ET

Hillary? NO. Definitely not Hillary. Clinton's have a tendency to permeate every crevice in order to serve themselves. And it would be hard to trust her with Secretary of State, in leu of the fact she still has her eyes set on making history in 2012.

Go CHUCK HAGEL! COLIN POWELL – Yes! WESTLEY CLARK – Great!! Offer Hillary the Supreme Court where they can hold her accountable for integrity.

Vic   November 13th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

To date, this makes as much sense as Obama's appointment of Rahm Emanuel. Having both working for him puts the president elect in the brilliant category. Two of the most qualified and able people, I say "Way to go, Mr. Prez!"

Barb   November 13th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

I am so over this all. First, the Clinton's are racist. Next Hillary is not qualified (has much more experience than Obama). Then Obama gets the nomination and you little Obama cry babies say no way to her being the VP pick. Then Obama chooses Biden. Next you litte cry babies say Hillary isn't doing enough to campaign on behalf and with Obama. Just shut up already. Nothing seems to satisfy you guys. Go wipe the snot from your noses and hold on to your mama's apron strings, cause that is where you belong. You all are so stupid, can't decide which way you want it. Most confused group of butt-munches I have ever seen.

Deb   November 13th, 2008 11:28 pm ET

What an excellent choice !

Niki, New Jersey   November 13th, 2008 11:27 pm ET

I voted for Barack Obama and with that vote I gave him the discretion to use his judgement to select a cabinet that he feels will best serve the interests of the American people both domestically and abroad. The names that are being floated around are all highly qualified for the job. I don't particularly care for Mrs. Clinton on a personal note but I have tremendous respect for her ability and I think she will be the most aggressive and thus effective. I feel that Bill Richardson has the perfect resume but maybe lacks the charisma to take on world leaders and leave a lasting impression. John Kerry is a well respected political leader in this country and has strong recognition abroad but I think he lacks that certain something that probably lost him the election in 2004. But as I said before, if it is any of the above mentioned or someone off the radar we must have confidence that our new President has the made the right choice. It is that very confidence that sets our democracy apart from the rest of the world and proves that in our relatively young history we emerged as the strongest and most unfied people on earth.

Earl   November 13th, 2008 11:26 pm ET

The funny thing about this is: Do you think Hillary would have had Barack in her cabniet, had she won? I doubt it. That just goes to show you that Barack is about bringing in the best people he can regardless of past differences.

Anne   November 13th, 2008 11:25 pm ET

Its not anyone decision but Obama's and Clinton's

Nessa   November 13th, 2008 11:25 pm ET

She would be great!!!

Sue   November 13th, 2008 11:21 pm ET

"This is not change." OK This is the Secretary of State job-who do YOU think is qualified…Sarah Palin? All these Cabinet level jobs require intelligence, savvy, and yes, Washington and world experience, so they will all go to people whose names we already know. I am glad he is surrounding himself with people who don't always agree with him. That shows that he is confident enough to take advice, weigh options, and not be another "Decider" who only listened to Cheney.

Tracey   November 13th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

Hillary would be a great choice. I think that if I were the pres
that is my first choice, or at least at the top of the list.

o.O huh?   November 13th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

Might be a good idea….if they can just shut Bill up. It would be interesting. Hillary i guess would be a good person to have in his corner

Lisa   November 13th, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Good choice ….Good Idea…We need the best of the best right now. Obama is the change, but he needs to be around some of the best people in the World to fix the mess Bush will leave behind. I feel sorry for the President, but may God Bless him. I am looking forward to Obama taking office.

By the way Hillary is the reason that Obama is President. She put him threw Hell and Back, but look what it did….MADE HIM STRONG.

Tim E   November 13th, 2008 11:11 pm ET

I simply refuse to believe that a U.S. Senator would return to a secretary's position. Does a secretary have to take 3 am calls? How's her shorthand? If she types as fast as she talks, we're talking a pretty low wpm score. Didn't Monica aspire to being a secretary? I think she'd be a great Education exec; she's had to raise two children at home. And we know she can read at least two books; she did write two, right? I think Sarah would be a good selection for press secretary; when she spoke for the President, we'd always know the story had legs. Of course if she were Secretary of State she'd have a head start, what with her intimate knowledge of her back yard neighbor. The best Hillary can tell us is that there is gambling in Atlantic City.

R   November 13th, 2008 11:10 pm ET

they said she was considered as VP, but that was a lie, therefore I don't believe this

Greg Hodges   November 13th, 2008 11:08 pm ET

Given the tremendous positive response internationally to the Nov. 4 election of Barack Obama; plus the goodwill the Clinton`s generate globally toward the U.S.; it seems like a no-brainer to ask Hilary to become the new Sec.of State. I feel a lot of healing went on in the latter stages of the presidential campaign occured between Obama & the Clinton`s; and the idea of the DREAM TEAM may yet come true!!!

Chipster   November 13th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

Coco: Why would Hillary Clinton "…curse out every head of State on Planet Earth?" Where do these sort of comments come from? Sen. Clinton has a reputation for being professional, smart, and focused. These silly projections are completely baseless. It's a mystery to me why people feel the need to project their attitudes on people they don't even know.

I'd prefer that Sen. Clinton stay in the Senate. We need all the votes we can get there but that's up to our new President and the Senator. She's a capable and dedicated public servant.

scraphappy   November 13th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

GO HILLARY!!! She would be awesome as Secretary of State, she is very intelligent and experienced, I hope she is asked and she ACCEPTS!!

Clinton Supporter   November 13th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

Nobody would be better than Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

As for being more "hawkish" than Obama because she wouldn't set a date certain for withdrawal from Iraq, as soon as was designated as the candidate, Obama backed away from ALL of his "liberal" positions!

He even suggested he would invade Pakistan in search of Bin Laden if the Pakistanis refused him permission – how hawkish is THAT?

PS: Don't think for a minute that the "rift" in the Democratic Party is healed. At least we see the last of Howard Dean – what a self-serving pompous creep he is.

Unless I see Clinton in a senior position, this voter will NEVER go back to the Democrats – and neither will anyone else I know.

Brandon4Hillary   November 13th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Secretary of State?? She still was the BEST choice for president!!

There isnt a thing she would have to "learn" on the job.

I will always be disappointed the best -woman-didnt get the job

PUMA!

LeAnn   November 13th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Although I am a Clinton supporter and am glad to see Bush go, I actually think Condoleeza Rice should stay in the position. She has the back ground and rapport to help facilitate foriegn policy.

Rosie   November 13th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

Kevin   November 13th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

I'm tired of hearing "Hillary deserves it."
You don't award this position based on nepotism.
That said, I think she would be wonderful in the position:
State-Hillary, Energy-Richardson, Defense-Clark,
H&HS- Dean. Homeland Security-Powell. Well there's a
guess. I'm sure B.O. will make wise picks regardless.

primarywatcher   November 13th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

No, NO, and OH H#** NO!!! This is yet another Clinton ploy – the leak, her answer "possibly", you name it – so she can sabotage the Obama administration for her effort to run in 2012. Remember, she tried to run her ticket on "experience", with Secretary of of State, she'll use it – to no end. Further, she's always been profoundly self-serving at all costs. Think she's turned a new leaf? Riiight. Obama, paleeeeese, don't fall for this. Go bi-partisan. Go CHUCK HAGEL! Offer Hillary the Supreme Court where they can hold her accountable for integrity.

vjohn-north carolina   November 13th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

i believe that Hillary would make a fine secretary of state, however we don't want too loose too many strong senior senators from the senate, because their replacements may not be able to hold on to the seats in the next elections.

keekers   November 13th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

You are obviously an idealogue devoid of courage. If you had any, you'd look at the state of the nation after 8 years of Clintons vs. state of the nation after 8 years of the great national sodomizer (your president) W.
YOU are the idiot.

andrew of california   November 13th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Give me my campaign contributions back! Like everyone else for Obama I stopped contributing after the primaries until he announced his VP. I started back up when I thought she was out of the question. Now she will be Secretary of State after pissing off all the arab countries of the world…? How is Obama going to achieve anything with the players we need to achieve with if the front person is their sworn enemy. This isn't about polarization. This is about personnel. Make her a Supreme Court Justice. But keep her out of the geo-political decission making process or there will be nothing but conflict.

ABG   November 13th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Hillary Clinton would be a great Secretary of State. Forget John Kerry.

I hope she gets the offer!

Myles, New Orleans   November 13th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

I would rather see her as a Supreme Court Justice. I believe that would be a better role for her.

BJ Bell   November 13th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

She kinda reminds me of the Movie "Basic Instinct" when the villain just wouldn't go away, Please Sarah just go back to doing what ever it was that you were doing before you tried to be "Prime Time".

God, Please help her find the way back home.

BJ

John   November 13th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Not that I think she would take it, but she would make a decent SecState if it came down to that. I think the Obama transition people need to at least make a sincere offer of something at the cabinet level. With her interests in both child welfare and health care, it would make more sense for her to take Health and Human Services, continuing what she started in President Clinton's first term.

Kevin   November 13th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

very good choice

exMAnow WA   November 13th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

HILLARY CLINTON IS THE BEST PERSON QUALIFIED FOR SECRETARY OF STATE AND I PRAY SHE ACCEPTS.

Audrey   November 13th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

John Kerry would be the best Secretary of State. He has all the foreign knowledge, foreign policy experience, speaks various languages and is a DIPLOMAT. Don't forget Hillary Clinton was prepared to go to war over Iran without any diplomatic overtures and she is a very very big Israel supporter. You need someone who sees both sides of the fence for this particular job. Please don't forget, Mr. Obama would not be where he is today if it wasn't for Mr. Kerry.

This country should have listened to Ron Paul, he would have been perfect for the job as President of the USA. He would have provided better sense in fixing things..

But did you listen ?? No… So reap the woes ahead..

As for Clinton for this possible post eh NO.

Kris   November 13th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

There are several others, both Republican and Democrat, who would be a better choice than Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton deserves respect; she is intelligent and articulate. She is has long and bright future in the Senate. But Secretary of State?! The choice smacks of a quid pro quo.

Joe Biden would be a better choice; but he's the V.P. I don't think six years in the Senate and eight years as first lady are sufficient.

Obama has said he wanted Republicans in his cabinet. State would be a possibility– people like Chuck Hagel, Robert Zoellick, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins. Democrats to consider include Bill Richardson and possibly Wesley Clark– a Rhodes Scholar and former Allied Commander of NATO

Vet in Texas   November 13th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Bob   November 13th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Obama I hope is seeking some form of punitive measures aimed at those persons and politics that have prevented minorities and even some ethnic groups from being fairly represented in our gov. No punitives= it WILL happen again.

Are you people for real? I just read about 50 comments on Sarah Palin, many who had the nerve to say she is only for SARAH. And now I read all these positive comments about Hillary Clinton? HAS AMERICA GONE MAD?!?!? If there was ever a family that is FOR THEMSELVES it is the CLINTON FAMILY. That was proven OVER AND OVER when Bill Clinton was governer of Arkansas, OVER AND OVER when Bill Clinton was president of America, OVER AND OVER when Hillary Clinton was senator for New York, and OVER AND OVER when Hilllary Clinton ran for the presidential nomination. Has anyone here bothered to research what happens to people who oppose the Clinton family? They get dead! If there ever was a group of people who look out for themselves ONLY it is the CLINTON family. It boggles the mind to think there are so many uneducated, voting, idiots in the United States of America.

How long ago did you graduate from 7th grade? Do you have any idea how to form a logical argument? You just managed to spew out a bunch of non-sense with no background or support. It's a good thing people like you don't attain elected positions. By the way it's spelled 'liar,' not "lier."

Hillary has done more for minorities than you know, But a person like you would be incapable of knowing that.

Observer   November 13th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I think Hillary would be a good choice for Secretary of State. She's been my choice for that position for months. She is well-known and well-liked by world leaders, but more importantly, she has earned their respect. They also know that she is not a pushover and that she is tough and tenacious. They wouldn't want to get on her bad side.

Amit   November 13th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

I would say that sounds like a good plan. She has good foreign contacts and is a intellegent lady. Obama should definitely offer her the post.

Washington Observer   November 13th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Secretary of State – No
Secretary of Health and Human Services – Yes

Hillary wants to get her and her husband's health care reform pushed through – this is what Hillary and Bill started to do when Bill first took office. This is where she would flourish and succeed

NO NO NO

tedious898   November 13th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

I honestly believe Hillary (and Bill) were being sincere in their support for Barack since the convention. So under those considerations; Hillary is an excellent choice for the position.

My only concern is if they see eye to eye on the diplomacy issue. Hillary used that as a bludgeon for Obama's proposal to speak to dictators without preconditions. Aside from that ….Let Hillary "open a can of whoop a$$ on these fools" She'd be a good choice – I think

Charles W. Skinner   November 13th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me. She in NO way has the qualifications to be Sec. of State. Her time as First Lady doesn't even begin to qualify her.

If she gets offered this, it is entirely as an attempt to buy her off from causing havoc in the Obama administration to show the Democrats that they backed the wrong candidate.

Dan, FL   November 13th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

I wish Dick Cheney well. I will miss him tremendously. The new administration has no clue about economy, security of our country. I hope they learn it now. It was quite easy to criticize when they were in the opposition now they have to put on the shoes. Watch the fun.

I think Hillary or Bill Richardson. I actually like Hillary in that position. The Governor of NY could then select RFK Jr for her seat.

YES—WHAT A WONDERFUL POSITION FOR SUCH AN INTELLIGENT WOMAN.
GET IT DONE!!!!!!

Kel   November 13th, 2008 9:28 pm ET

I think she's definitely experienced, well connected, she'll keep America safe, she's very intelligent, world leaders know her… She actually has thought over the national security issue because of her presidential run. Excellent choice! Ready on day one, prevent another 911 (which happened within 100 days of Pres Bush btw).

But unnamed "insiders" are often imagination, and there are too many Senators changing hands. Illinois and Delaware must choose new Senators, and Alaska doesn't have a Senator yet.

Mariel, Ohio   November 13th, 2008 9:28 pm ET

despite my feelings for her I must admit that she would be excellent as Sec of State. No one is going to see her as too soft (like Kerry and Gore) and she has a lot of connections. She also has a different foreign policy vision which would add to debate.

Randy, San Francisco   November 13th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

Hillary has been a loyal Democrat by campaigning for Obama. She will do the right thing if called to serve in the Obama administration.

Simmy   November 13th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

I'm not into it yet, but I trust my new president and his advisers. If he thinks she is the best choice, so be it!

As far as the critics who keep jumping on the 'why all the Clinton people?' bandwagon go: I say; think about the state of our country at this time. President Obama is coming into an office that is severely damaged. It behooves him to have people who can get the country rolling before day 1. I still say bravo – he's a smart and wise president!

Please stop it!!! We Democrats are bigger than that! So please stop the divisiveness. The Clintons have done more for Obama's campaign than Kerry and Richardson together. In case you forgotten, Hillary was in Florida while Bill was in Pennsylvania stomping for Barack during the final days of the campaigne! In fact, their presence alone speaks volumes for Barack. So to have Hillary as a Sec. of State is a GREAT idea because she will do anything to help his agenda.

Mary WA   November 13th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

I hope she is the secretary of state and she deserves it.Whatever people that like or dislike about her she deserves it.I also will never beleive she is a racisit.Of course she wanted to win the nomination but so would have Obama had he lost. She have supported Obama like no other opponent could have after losing the primary.I was and continued to be a Obama supporter but come on give Hillary some credit.Foget what she said during the primaries because I'm willing to bet that there was alot of people that voted for Obama that thought also at one time he was not ready but like Hillary we all saw that he was indeed ready to be president.Palin will never be a Hillary Clinton and if she is (Hillary) Obama's secretary of state it will be even harder for Obama to lose for reelection in 2012 so Palin take that to the bank and make a withdrawal for even considering running in 2012

Chris in Va.   November 13th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

In my opinion Hillary is capable of the post, however many nations, especially Middle-Eastern countries, do not respect women and do not recognize their abilities. This is evident in the deterrioration of relations since the Clinton administration (Madeline Albright) through the Bush administration (Condaleeza Rice). To them having to negotiate with a woman, especially one negotiating through strength, is an insult.

John S.   November 13th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

There are some that do not like Hillary Clinton and some others do. I believe having Senator Clinton as his Secretary of State, would be the best move Barrack could make. Hillary is a tough lady and believe it or not, most Foriegn Officials know and respect her for her grit and tenacity . They know she doesn't bluff when it comes to the United States. Talk about the "Original Pitbull". No one would even want to mess with Hillary. This move would cement all Clintons followers to Obama and make things a lot easier when dealing with the Democrats as well. Hillary is well respected by both parties.

The difference between Hilliary and Obama politically are miniscule. They both are progressive intelligent thinkers. The only reason she was not the best choice for vice-pres. was Bill Clinton. His influence would be diametrically opposed to Obsam's platform, subsequently neutralizing Hilliary's contribution to a presidential agenda. As Secretary of State, Hilliary's role would not be conducive to meddling, given the condition of world affairs. Take this position Hilliary ,if offered, because I believe you would be an excellent, firm negotiator on the international stage.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will be a great candidate for Secretary of State. She is intelligent, strong, experienced, and is capable of tackling foreign affairs that will bring about positive results.

housport22   November 13th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

In the distant past of our country, the office of Secretary of State was the stepping stone to the Presidency. I feel Senator Clinton's decision to accept such an appointment, if offered, would depend greatly on both her ambition and the amount of years she would devote to public service. As Sec. of State, she would directly represent the president and help to implement policy. She would be the face of America overseas. As a senator, she'd be one of many legislators attempting to craft policy.

I'm so, so sick of these "anonymous sources close to Obama team."

How many have been right? 15%? 10%? None?

I know people got addicted to political coverage during the campaigns and now that Barack Obama isn't campaigning everyday, the coverage has slowed down while the interest remains high, but grow some journalism balls. Just putting "perhaps" or "allegedly" in front of baseless rumor doesn't make it worthy of news coverage.

dEMOBRAT   November 13th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Ain't gonna happen.

Reality   November 13th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Hillary is the only shot to keep us in power in 2012!

New Day   November 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

AWESOME!!!!!! Kinda reminds me of Lincoln picking William H. Seward, a senator from New York who was the overwhelming choice to win his party's nomination, as Secretary of State. The parallels are stunning.

Bushwhacked in Eugene, OR   November 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I actually think Hilary would be great at this job — and would love to see it offered to her [and I'm NOT one of her disenfranchised fans]. Her talents would be well-used here.

ET from OMAHA   November 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

WOW Koudos OBAMA! my trust in you is even growing bigger and Bigger. You know how to surrend yourself with very very smart people to get the Job Done.

Kevin,FL   November 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I would really like if she's offered the position as Secretary of State. This will make a powerful team.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   November 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Just what we need–Hillary Clinton alienating half the world rather than just half the U.S.

Chase   November 13th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Hillary is soo much better than bored-me-death John Kerry or backstabber Bill Richardson. Pres-elect Obama, I was a Hillary Clinton supporter and I voted for you because of Hillary convinced me and I believe in you. So far you've done an outstanding job!!!

John   November 13th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

I think this would be a great move, I'm sure she is as capable as Condoleeza Rice.

Yeswedid   November 13th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

I would be satisfied with Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, though I think I'd much rather see Bill Richardson. Who else will advocate for health care in the Senate for Obama if it's not Hillary?

LOU   November 13th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

I think Hillary would be a great Sec. of State. She is a very intelligent lady. She said she likes being a senator from New York. She and Mr. Obama will decide what is best.

James McCurdy   November 13th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Yes I think Hillary would be a good secretary of state, however I do not trust that P.E. BHMO will appoint her. He failed to choose her as a running mate so I have no faith in him choosing her here either.

Shane   November 13th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

She is a horrible person. I know this cop that met her and she the dude like trash…what you know what

Janice Illinois   November 13th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

FINALLY!! Go Hillary . We love you . you did your best for him. and your party. You deserve it , you earned it . Now go get , only if you want it. You proved yourself lady and we are proud of you.

Nia Hussein- Phoenix, AZ   November 13th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Still waaaayyy to much under lying drama. Obama needs Richardson in the spot or some of the folks who had his back like stink on S*** during the primaries trough the win. Way to much toxic Clinton BS already in the cabinet

Gaylon Barrow   November 13th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

SO HILLARY – This is what you sold us out for. Have a good ride for it will end four years from now. Your political future is down the drain. You would support comeone as crooked an immoral as this man means that all the stories that were told about you and Whitewater were true then. You are also crooked.

Dan from Philly   November 13th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

I think she'd be better at AG or H&HS. What foreign policy experience does she have?

Tina, NC   November 13th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

I don't know about this one. Clinton and Obama had some big disagreements about foreign policy. But, she would be a better pick than Richardson or Kerry plus she'd be great on women and human rights. It wouldn't take much to outshine Condie either.
Still, I'm not sure she would take it. We'll see…….

T   November 13th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

It's a good idea.

a brighter day   November 13th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

talk about a dream team, sounds good to me.

michael   November 13th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

She'd be a decent choice if she'll stay in line and not work her own agenda, Palin style.

Libs be dopes   November 13th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

"She replied, "I am happy being a Senator from New York, I love this state and this city. I am looking at the long list of things I have to catch up on and do. But I want to be a good partner and I want to do everything I can to make sure his agenda is going to be successful.""

Which means?

Typical politician

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 13th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

I believe she would be brilliant! Hope she says YES!

A Woman In California For Obama   November 13th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Okay before ALL you Clinton supporters (my sister included) start to hate Obama just remember MAYBE she doesn't want to work for his administration because she would have to produce the list of presidential donors from the library. Obama believes in total transparency. Keep that in mind.

Pat Pa.   November 13th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I think this would be an excellent choice, however, once again, this news is not coming from the Obama group but from " unnamed sources ". Until it is confirmed by Obama, or a named representative of his group, it doesn't mean a thing.

3strikes   November 13th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

welcome to the 2009 Nobama/Biden/Clinton administration, nice "change"

Tex Ann ~~~~~~~   November 13th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Actually Hillary Clinton would probably make a GREAT Secretary of State, but I'm not sure if she even wants the job.

Another possibility— Madeline Albright is still a pretty active & very savvy woman.

Kevin   November 13th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

That's how you run a party: reaching out. Not running to the crazies.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 13th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

I hope she doesn't go to Bosnia. I hear the snipers are terrible this time of year.

Sandra   November 13th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Big Mistake!

Nija   November 13th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

This is one smart lady that I know.

JPM   November 13th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

She would be an excellent Secretary of State – she has the high profile, the confidence of the world, and the experience. She has my vote!

Pack It Up   November 13th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

WEAk … this is not change. Get rid of the lifers in Washington … don't give them recycled jobs.
