Obama announces resignation from Senate seat

Sen. Obama is giving up his seat in the Senate.

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama has announced that he will officially resign his Senate seat as of this Sunday.

“It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate,” he said in a statement released by his campaign Thursday.

“In a state that represents the crossroads of a nation, I have met so many men and women who’ve taken different journeys, but hold common hopes for their children’s future. It is these Illinois families and their stories that will stay with me as I leave the United States Senate and begin the hard task of fulfilling the simple hopes and common dreams of all Americans as our nation’s next President.”

Obama’s Senate office will close sometime within the next two months. His Senate staff will spend that time coordinating with his replacement, advising constituents with open requests, and archiving documents for Obama’s presidential library.

Several Illinois Democrats - including Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, a former congressional candidate who now serves in Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration – have been mentioned as possible Senate replacements for Obama.

Blagojevich, who will appoint Obama’s successor, announced last week that he was assembling a panel to vet likely candidates. Obama’s replacement would be up for re-election in 2010.

Vice president-elect Joe Biden – who was also re-elected to his Delaware Senate seat on November 4 - told an interviewer several weeks ago that he would resign when he's sworn in as vice president in January.

Obama's senate staff is archiving his documents for Obama's presidential library. Wow! The guy hasn't even been sworn in and Obama is already concerned about his legacy. Amazing how self-absorbed Obama is. But, not to worry, the archive work will only take about 10 minutes since he never had one single piece of significant legislative accomplishment in the 3 years he was a Senator, given that he spent two of those years running for the presidency while still getting a paycheck paid for by the taxpayers.

It looks like the Dems are for sure going to take the seat in Alaska. With Minn and Georgia still up for grabs, you're hearing all this Liberman talk bc the Dems still think they can claim 60 seats.

    Dear Barack,

You have inspired us. You have inspired me. Yours was the first campaign I worked on since June 4, 1968. As Bobby did, you gave us hope. Hope... that this country could once again rise up, and live out the true eaning of it's creed. And now, our hopes are with you. That you find a way to truly make the changes we need to make, so that once again, along with Michelle, we can hold our heads high in the council of nations. That we can know that this country truly is a model of justice to the whole world.
God bless Mr. President, and god speed.

What a statesman that Barack Obama is! I have and will continually pray for him as he take on even more respinisbility leading our nation. It is my belief that President Elect Obama will to the best of his ability try to govern with the divine inspiration of God and use common pragmatic sense. He knows to surround himself with wise and intelligent people from both sides of the aisle. God speed to you sir.

Was Obama ever actually a Senator–I thought he just moved his perpetual campaign from Chicago to DC...

He has never really done the job he was elected for but almost immediately started campaigning for the next job.

I will make a donation to his campaign if he will run for head of the EU. Just get him out of here.
