Obama announces resignation from Senate seat

Sen. Obama is giving up his seat in the Senate.

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama has announced that he will officially resign his Senate seat as of this Sunday.

“It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate,” he said in a statement released by his campaign Thursday.

“In a state that represents the crossroads of a nation, I have met so many men and women who’ve taken different journeys, but hold common hopes for their children’s future. It is these Illinois families and their stories that will stay with me as I leave the United States Senate and begin the hard task of fulfilling the simple hopes and common dreams of all Americans as our nation’s next President.”

Obama’s Senate office will close sometime within the next two months. His Senate staff will spend that time coordinating with his replacement, advising constituents with open requests, and archiving documents for Obama’s presidential library.

Several Illinois Democrats - including Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, a former congressional candidate who now serves in Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration – have been mentioned as possible Senate replacements for Obama.

Blagojevich, who will appoint Obama’s successor, announced last week that he was assembling a panel to vet likely candidates. Obama’s replacement would be up for re-election in 2010.

Vice president-elect Joe Biden – who was also re-elected to his Delaware Senate seat on November 4 - told an interviewer several weeks ago that he would resign when he's sworn in as vice president in January.

Considering the enormity of the task before him, this is the sensible move. Illinois should be able to appoint a suitable replacement in time.

The conservatives and McCain supporters need to get over it. Contrary to what you claim, "not all of us will be happy" if he were to resign the Presidency considering that he won a majority of the popular vote.

Onward, and upward President-elect Obama! I am currently the sole "bread winner" in my family and despite my 401k being "in the toilet" my heart soars with pride, joy and hope brought on solely by my faith in God and the hope represented by your presidency! Godspeed to you, may His guidance make the burdens you have inherited light on your shoulders.

“It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate."

When? You only managed to serve about a year and a half before you abandoned your seat to run for president. What exactly are using the White House for? A spring board to Emperor of the Universe?

Hey "Dont Blame Me, I DIDNT vote for Barry":

Get over it. You lost! Obama will be a great president. The fact that the Republicans are lead by idiots is the reason you lost. Deal.

    Hey "CNN mod":
Re: Valerie Jarett is rumored to be in line for a post in Obama's White House. Maybe that's why she's de-emphasized here...?

I'm torn... LOVED having him for my Senator... THRILLED you'll be my new Prez... :-))

I vote for Jesse, Jr. to replace him; Tammy for the VA. (I'll defer to whatever Sen. Durbin thinks is best.)

    @ Everyman

To answer your question, no, he's not. His regulatory plans for guns are well documented and have been prominent in the news lately because of people like yourself crying and wetting their pants about it when it's really not going to affect you. If you weren't either (a) lying by pretending not to know or (b) actually ignorant about it, then you'd not post something that makes you look so Sarah-Palin-stupid.

The juvenile responses from all the petulant, whiny little Republicans in this post just show why the Republican party is a reactionary party of children that doesn't deserve any responsibility or power in the federal government. Not new information, but always nice to have it validated again and again.

I can't wait for President Obama to be sworn in come January 20th! All you nay-sayers will change your tune once you see what a brilliant President this man will be. We desperately need the change he will bring. All of our lives will change for the better. You'll see.

"fullfilling the simple hopes and common dreams of all Americans"
Oh PULEESE, give us a break.
You have no idea of peoples dreams...only your own and your spoiled brat kids. Say, by the way, just how much will the mutt cost?
    Private school?
    Mother-in-law sponging off the tax-payers?
Illegal relative still in the country?
Can't wait until this rag-tag crew is OUT of the White House.
...and they can take the horse they rode in on with them.

ask yourself this, those of you who spread hate and anger just because your choice did not win. Do you hate Obama because he cares about this country? Do you hate him because he wants us all to work together to save this great country. What possibly about those aspirations could you hate....or do you hate him simply because he won and your man did not. If you have someone in office who genuinely cares about bringing us together to help save this great country ...how could those aspirations cause you to be so hateful. If you dont win then you dont want to play at all...is that it....youre the kind of person who knocks over the chess board if you dont win. If you are drowning....and a democrat dives into the water to save you....do you let yourself drown?

You foul haters, you need to listen up. Obama is trying to "learn" you something, self respect, and you all just don't get it. You should keep those ignorant comments to yourselves. Didn't your mama's teach you if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Learn some respect.

Congress must have Obama show his valid birth certificate, since he will not show to the courts regarding lawsuits in various states.

To all of you that cares less for our new president, than leave the country. Many of us are sick and tired of the division and anomosity people are having. We the people, many of us voted and now the votes have voted to call Obama, President Obama.

We should be pulling together to make this world better and also provide a brighter future to our children and grandchildren.
