Sen. Hillary Clinton met with President-elect Barack Obama Thursday in Chicago sources tell CNN.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama met with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton late Thursday afternoon in Chicago, two sources confirm to CNN.

The meeting was held at the request of Obama.

One of the sources says Clinton went to the meeting because "she knew Obama wanted to talk about whether she would have a role in the administration."

UPDATE:
An Obama transition source says the meeting came about through Sen Lindsey Graham, a McCain supporter, and Rahm Emanuel, Obama's new chief of staff. Both men have had a "longstanding relationship," according to the source and worked out the meeting.

No way Hillary's going to leave the Senate for a cabinet post. Just yesterday Obama's transition team came out with a long laundry list of questions for possible appointees and everyone knows the Clinton's don't want anyone looking into their DIRTY LAUNDRY :) :)

Danny in Chicago   November 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

I think having Hillary Clinton involved is a good thing, She is a strong force in politics and she's on the right (or should I say 'left') side of things.

However, let's be clear – This is Obama's party and Hillary knows it. Any other speculation is just that – speculation.

It's so nice that we are talking so highly about Democrats again. And it's nice to have some hope in these darker times.

I WANT MORE ELITISTS! SAVE OUR COUNTRY AND WORLD GOOD PEOPLE!

An American   November 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I thought she was supposed to not have enough foreign relations experience, now she is being considered for SOS! Obama does not have a clue how to run this country so now she would be "considered". Ha, what a joke. If I were Hillary I would not do it – stay in the Senate and if you want take another jab at the Presidency if you want, but leave Obama out to dry – he is supposed to be the "one", so let him be the "one"!!

Yes Hillary..   November 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I definitely approve this move. I was pleased to hear her name being mentioned. I trust Obama will give it to her. God Bless President-Elect Barack Obama.

Keep Condoleeza Rice. Hillary for healthcare. ———————————————————————————————————- Awesome Choice. I second this one and Hope and Pray it becomes true.

Matthew   November 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

State or Defense – she'd be phenomenal in either position.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Hillary was well travelled as First Lady. However she wasn't negotiating with world leaders, she was largely doing photo ops. There are people much better qualified than her to be Sec. State, like Colin Powell, who has already done the job. Appointing Clinton would just be political payback. Is that change?

LAR   November 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

I would expect Obama to look to his own party first for cabinet members. But I was hoping to see more creativity or new thinking. Not the same old faces. These are the same people that have given congress its 10% approval rating! Where's the evidence of change?

Gaylon Barrow   November 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

As many of Clinton EXs as OBAMA is surrounding himself with he may at least know that he does not have the brain-power to run this ship by himself. But, why would Hillary want to gamble her political carrer with this man who is so unscrupulous?

mayah   November 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

He said it yes we can and yes we will, AWESOME President OBAMA..

Change has come to AMERICA

Super D   November 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Obama, please select someone who actually has credentials.

Hillary is soooooooo whatever……she can be president, vice president, supreme court justice, now secretary of state.

Gimmie a break, she's not that talented.

Kim   November 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

Obama doesn't owe Clinton anything, the Democratic Party owes it to her. She got pushed around by her own party. Not by Obama.
Having said that, Obama would be making a big mistake in not including Clinton in his administration. She would be perfect for Secretary of State.
As an Amercian living abroad, I see her as a great point of contact for foreign heads of state. Not only does she know how to handle them after 8 years in office, but she's smart. That, and she can string together a coherent sentence… a skill possesed by few these days.

30-m-PA-Democrat-voted McCain   November 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

Sounds good to me. She'd make a great Secreaty of State. She would have made a better president, but what can you do.

amused but happy in Vegas   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I think Obama should appoint Palin to some position where she can do little damage.

Let her fail early and visibly, and get her off the national stage.

Alex Kersha   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Put Clinton in the highest position possible where she can do the least damage.

Cheers.

pam Eugene OR   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I do not want Clinton to be Sec of State. Very big mistake!
I have had enough of Bill Clinton for a lifetime.
Please go with Richardson or Kerry!

Obama Woman from the Start   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I agree, Max. CHANGE means sending the Clintons away to another country. Iraq, perhaps.

Ms. Jenny   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

To all you mentally challenged, bitter Republicans who keep whining about "but I thought he was about 'change'" – let me explain something to you.

OBAMA is President. No one else. Understand?
HE is the agent of change.
Obama will CHANGE the influence lobbyist have in Washington.
Obama will make government more open and transparent.
Obama will change this countries economic and foreign policies.

So it doesn't matter who else is in the cabinet so long as Obama sets the agenda. They ALL "serve at the pleasure of the President". How the hell does Hillary Clinton being Secretary of State affect Obama's ability to implement the change I've described? IT DOESN'T!!!! You guys are just petty, bitter, sore losers who are grasping at any excuse to criticize Obama. Grow up.

dlm   November 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

COOL! I'm climbing back up on the bandwagon!

Joe in NJ   November 14th, 2008 9:52 am ET

It wouldn't surprise me if he had already promised this to her in exchange for her not making waves after he won the Democratic nomination. She could have easily run as an independent if she wanted to, in which case McCain would now be President-elect.

Change?   November 14th, 2008 9:52 am ET

I thought we were going to have a "Change" from the past, not warmed over Clinton representatives. If Obama's argument during the primary debates was Hillary inflated her foreign relations experienced due to just being married to the President, how come that has changed? President Bush used warmed over Reagan and Bush Sr cabinent members. Lets get some real goverment outsiders – put me in the run the department of energy.

Karen-phoenix   November 14th, 2008 9:52 am ET

NO Palin ever!!!! This women has NO education and all her kids are high school drop outs!!! NOT a good image for our youth! BUT Hillary is great! Has masters degree and so does Chelsie–Great image for our youth!!! Hillary will be great where ever she goes. I do think she and Barack have become friends and so has Michelle and Hillary–both highly educated women who care about their children and the education levels of America's children!

Steve   November 14th, 2008 9:52 am ET

I think it is important that President-elect Obama is guided more by intellect and what's the right thing to do for the US than by emotion – meeting with Senators McCain and Clinton shows, to me, that he recognizes the importance of these individuals and (hopefully) his willingness to work with them. I appreciate that folks don't think this looks like change, but we need to look beyond the superficial and consider change as a different approach and style to Washington politics, because the faces won't change (nor should they necessarily).

N. S. Huntsville, Al   November 14th, 2008 9:52 am ET

How does CNN or any one else know why she met Obama? Stop making more out of nothing, everyone knows Obama admires Hillary and vice versa. I hope Hillary will be in Obamas administration because I think she can bring together the health plan that all americans can afford, and I like the Clintons.

Sarav Chithambaram   November 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Yes, I am all for it.. It will be awesome to see Hillary as part of the new Administration. Why not? She is strong, articulate, capable and has proved herself again and again. For Christ sake, she is a democrat.

GeezMcD   November 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Well, Ms. Clinton, I do hope it becomes so. Bring your knowledge and enter it across the world. President-elect Obama needs your input for the Secretary of State job!

Sue in MI   November 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

The other great thing about this speculation is that we won't have to listen to Palin today! The difference between a true leader and a wanna-be will be ever so clear. Go home, Sarah!

janet   November 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

i hope Hillary get the job we need her god know that someone need to be in Washington that know what is going on in the world Hillary should be liveing in the white house but people was to dumb to see the light and vote for her so good luck Hillary i will feel a lot safer with you back looking out for the country, Janet in WV

Sylvia   November 14th, 2008 9:50 am ET

CNN, you keep running this story about how President-elect Obama would name Sen. Clinton as SOS. In addition, you keep showing stories asking whether Obama will succeed as a president and you are so fixated by Palin. Please CNN, start reporting some real news. What is going on in the country? What is going on in the world? Your network is so boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gorg the Merciless, Montgomery Co, MD   November 14th, 2008 9:50 am ET

this is like having Hannibal Lecter as surgeon general or HHS.

MILOPAT   November 14th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Excellent. Now I want to see Bill Richardson meeting with Obama to get his position.

Ann Mack   November 14th, 2008 9:50 am ET

In my opinion, the Secretary of State should be someone who hates war and would only use war as a last resort, and who can firmly see Peace in their mind's eye; someone who recognizes that all men are brothers/sisters and that we all come from the same Source or Creator, to truly make some headway at bringing people together in reconciliation. That said, Hillary Clinton has earned her right to some cabinet post within an Obama administration. I am just not sure if being Secretary of State is the right one for her.

There is a saying from Christ — "you are either with me or against me." I think Lieberman has proved that he is "against" Democrats and is a closet Republican. He should go to the group that he really "vibes" with. You do not keep your enemies close where they have a greater ability to stab you in the back. That is my opinion.

Obama Woman from the Start   November 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

NO! Clinton, the perpetual self-serving liar, CLAIMED she wanted to stay in the Senate.
NO! Corzine is a horrible governor…keep him out of your administration.

JUST
SAY
NO
to Corzine and Clintons!

KERRY for Secretary of State.

tittat   November 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

We need a new, young face for the Secretary of State. By young I mean under the ago of 50. The Baby Boomers and the Clintons have had their time. If there is really to be change, then do it Obama. Already I'm regretting giving you my vote !!

Krsiten   November 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Apparently President-elect Obama is going to follow the Bush-Clinton policy of ignoring parts of the world that they can't find on a map. Like most of Africa, the Balkans, SE Asia, etc. A good portion of the world will welcome Hilary as SOS. Because her husband was popular with left leaning governments all over the world. THe people he ignored while they were slughtered won't be so appreciative of his wife being the face of America abroad. I think that Senator Clinton is an able legislator (better than Obama was, I am in Illinois, after all) but she carries too much baggage (her husband!) to be effective in a major role in the new administration. Just like her baggage made her an unwise choice as veep (would have motivated the Republican base to get out the vote though), her baggage makes her an unwise choice for Secretary of State.

On a similar note, former Secretary of Stae Colin Powell would be a poor choice due to his unfortunate speech at the UN. He has learned the lesson of being a conservative. He did the right thing, then became the scapegoat and retired to be forgotten. I don't think anyone on the world stage will forget or forgive.

That Other Jerry   November 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

I'm a McCain voter who thinks Hillary would be an excellent Secretary of State. Look beyond the campaign and the fact that she is Bill Clinton's wife, and you see a good record of support and funding for our troops, even when it put her at odds with others in her party. That alone earned her my respect, even when I don't agree with her. I for one would be a lot less anxious about Obama's foreign policy knowing she was at the State Dept.

Hopeful for Tomorrow   November 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Fred, you may also recall that the President-Elect and the Senator do not agree on everything. As much as Obama should surround himself with the opposing party he should also have members of his own party who have similar yet different approaches to the same end.

laxraddad   November 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

I'd take Clinton over Kerry anyday! I hate to admit it but I think this would be a good fit for Hillary as Secretary of State.

Joanne Ciccone   November 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

I love the idea! She certainly deserves it. But I hope she won't, once again, be in the shadow of her wonderful past president husband Bill Clinton.

Rita   November 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

BILL RICHARDSON FOR SECRETARY OF STATE! He's got experience, he hasn't been in Washington for a while and has never served in congress, he provides diversity to the administration, and he's got Obama's BACK. He chose Obama because he thought it would be good for the country, he really risked a lot of political relationships when he didn't back Hillary. I don't really care for John Kerry and I don't think Hillary has enough foreign policy experience.

Lisa251   November 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

No to Condoleezza Rice! We need Hilary!

Adam   November 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Good fit

Sally   November 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

And so he should give her a top administration job – she should have been VP. This lady is gracious, knowledgeable and can only benefit the new administration. She SHOULD have won, but that's history now – she will be President in 2012.

Susan   November 14th, 2008 9:46 am ET

We know Hillary will work hard for the US, whatever position President Obama would like for her to do.

Obama is putting a good team of workers together.

Chip   November 14th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Please don't let Hilary into the administration. Wasn't that election enough to show you what she wants — power — any power — all power… now! Plus I just don't want to look at her, Bill or Chelsea ever again.

jeff   November 14th, 2008 9:46 am ET

If I was her I would stay in the senate.
Obama will not live up to high expectations and he will loose many of his following over the next 4 years she can run again once he fails

Sue in MI   November 14th, 2008 9:46 am ET

All the dubious people out there need to take a breath. You complain that Obama doesn't have enough experience, yet complain more when he goes to older, more experienced people. I suppose you think McCain should be Sec. of Defense and the barely literate Palin Sec. of State. THAT would work well. I think what this really is is a desire on many people's parts that he fail, and when he surrounds himself with intelligent people, deep down, you think that maybe, just maybe, this guy does know what he's doing. The Bush and Republican attempts to ruin this country will not be undone in a day, a week, or even in four years, but at least Obama appears to have a plan, and yes, it just might work! So hang on, and try to be positive for once.

Ruby   November 14th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Secy of State or Supreme Court judge. She is a great role model for women.

Joseph Ngoru   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

This is encouraging.Obama is all inclusive.
Obam and clinton must remain friends inspite of the nomination battles they fought.
Clinton helped and campaigned for obama.
She is worthy materila for several top positions.
no bad blood.
go on Obama nad bring her on board.

BKMC   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Hilary has a strong background in international affairs and issues facing the world today. She is a strong diplomate and a very bright negotiator. She has the moral responsibility to serve America now and not tomorrow. She will be a key player and a real team player in an Obama Administration because she is capable as Obama to put America first. Great choices so far, may God guide Obama/Biden in their willingness to serve America.

Pamela Rainsong   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

There appear to be a lot of Bush supporters on CNN blogs making rude comments… I don't really trust their judgement. Do you?

Ver concern   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Great! Or I would love to see her in the Federal Supreme Court…a very venerable job.

Deborah Ballweg   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Hillary is a great choice. She can't tell if she is being fired upon but is perfectly willing to lie about it on national tv. SHE'S PERFECT. GOOD JOB

Kevin   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Yeah, change, whatever.

Betty   November 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

This would be wonderful! Hillary would be great in position of Secretary of State. Hillary would have made a good President, but I am very glad that Obama won. We soon will have a "grownup" in the White House, and it is exciting.

Tim   November 14th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I saw this one coming. Who's more qualified?

barbara   November 14th, 2008 9:44 am ET

What a great choice. Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton … what a great team!

Jon   November 14th, 2008 9:44 am ET

i love the fact that OBAMA is vetting Hillary for a spot in the cabinet, not vice versa……so satisfying

Pamela Rainsong   November 14th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I would also love to see Clinton run against Palin for President (and win). What a campaign that would be!

Ronald   November 14th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Great she would be an excellent choice — She could be a forceful defender of American.

Nicholas from Nigeria   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

I anticipated it and am happy to have Hillary be the top diplomat. She is sure very qualified but I cannot say more qualified than Kerry or Chuck Hagel but it will renew the face of Obama administration. She fought for him to be elected and she is smart to handle the post of USA top diplomat.

God Bless Obama

Nicholas

Pamela Rainsong   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

Obama surrounds himself with smart people who care about this country. That is Change.

Truth Hurts   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

I was always a Obama supporter but I see no reason why Hilary would not make a good Secretary of State. She has dealt with Foreign leaders around the world. She has more experience then Condelessa had as Secretary of State. Hilary Husband would be a good advisor to her. Giving Hilary this spot would for sure keep Obama in for 8 years. This is like the number 3 or 4 spot in the cabinet.

juan   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

I think this is good news. I am an Obama supporter but Hillary did help Obama win the election in a direct and indirect way. She ran a long campaign and brought to the surface many issues Obama had so they were no surprise when the Republican tried to open those old wounds. Lets face it , many people felt tired of hearing it again and it had no impact because Obama had already addressed these issues.
I tend to think they compliment one another. Obama is more diplomatic while Hillary is more demanding. They both can learned from each other. Not to mention Hillary did over 70 campaign appearance and rallies for Obama. It is a good match!

Purple Nurple   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

Watch out for the knife in the back Obama. She is still only a former first lady and a first terms senator. I remember the primaires HRC and the things you said about Obama. You are still out for yourself lady.

Abby   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

NYer, his name is President-elect Barack Obama, not Barry :) Your bitterness is sad.

Leah from FL   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

Now this is what I call "COUNTRY FIRST"!!!

Washington Observer   November 14th, 2008 9:42 am ET

Washngton insiders say Hillary will not have anything to do with the Obama Administration as she expects him to fall flat; and for Democrats to lose the majorityin the Senate. Hillary has her eyes on running for President in 2012. The smart money is on Hillary to stay in the Senate and distance herself from Obama, Pelosi, and Reid, all of who she expects to be out in 2012.

Mia and Mike   November 14th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Aww come on! I think Hillary would be a fabulous addition to the administration, but these leaks need to stop. I think the President elect needs to start tossing people outside of his inner circle, because these daily leaks are getting ridiculous. I like his old style better- a tight knit team who knew how to keep their mouths shut. This transition team talks too much.

andy   November 14th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Change, what change, If Obama selects Clinton for Sec of State, It's the same old insider politics going on in DC. Sounds like the Clinton's may have given their support to Obama for this position. Give Americans a break. We want out with the old and some real change by new faces for the better of the country. Not positioning Clinton for a run in '12 or '16 touting her foreign policy experience. Politics same as usual.

Drew

Jimmy 2 Feet   November 14th, 2008 9:41 am ET

This is GREAT!!!!!!

al   November 14th, 2008 9:41 am ET

She will make a very good effective secretary of state, although I personally thought that she would make a good president too. She has better foreign policy and relation that Obama does not have.

Then again, why would she give up her secure senate job representing the big state of new york, and have a job at the pleasure of the president? She could be a senator for the rest of her life, and a secretary of state may last only months or years.

vic nashville,Tn   November 14th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Hillary will be best Secretary of state. World leaders know her well they will work with her. We need Hillary to clean the mess made by Bush administration this is one of the smart move by Obama.
But I want Hillary to be next president

MARY   November 14th, 2008 9:40 am ET

EXCELLENT MOVE – She would be great. Tough also. Just what we need in the new administration. I think she would smoke Madeline Albright.

Abby   November 14th, 2008 9:40 am ET

These leakers are so unprofessional.

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 14th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Well, perhaps the "leak" is right! Sen. Clinton may be asked to be Sec. of State. She would be brilliant!

Since she ended her campaign I have believed that President-elect Obama would ask her to be Sec. of State, both she and president Clinton would make quite a team for U.S. diplomacy which thanks to the Republicans is in the dumpster!

Let's put the United States of America back to her image of a "shinning city on a hill" ………rather than the war-hate-monger status of the Bush/Cheney years!

Joe   November 14th, 2008 9:40 am ET

She would be a good choice as Secretary of State, and has proved her loyalty to Obama, and has a good knowledge of the world. She is one smart person. Sort of the Anti-Sarah (Palin).

Kareem from Hampton, Va   November 14th, 2008 9:39 am ET

I KNEW IT!!!! I TOLD YOU ALL!!!!! I cant WAIT to see what the new administration will look like!

Marco in Phoenix   November 14th, 2008 9:38 am ET

This is no suprise. I was saying Obama would possibly (probably?) pick her for this position.

Obama all the way   November 14th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Now, I didn't want her for Prez, but I'd certainly take her for Sec of State over Kerry.

I trust Obama will make the right choice.

Mike   November 14th, 2008 9:38 am ET

I thought Hillary's legacy would be in health care reform and building the new US health care policy. Well, her legacy could be even greater as Secretary of State! She already has good foreign policy direction and her appointment would look good for all America.
It would be another truly positive step for the still not sworn in Obama.

Kia   November 14th, 2008 9:37 am ET

YES!!! This is going to be the best administration that the world has ever seen. He is surrounding himself with positive, far-thinking people who really want to do better. Way to go Obama, Biden,Clinton!!

I hope Hillary does get offered a position in the Obama administration. She is intelligent, articulate and tough and deserves the recognition. It will make many Hillary voters very happy to see we are truly a party of unity and not division (unlike the Republicans).

Brian NY   November 14th, 2008 9:36 am ET

OBAMA 08   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Could be the best decision he makes!

arc, Lugano CH   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

I didn't vote for Hillary Clinton in the Primary. However, I think that she would be a fine Secretary of State; or perhaps Richard Holbrooke. Not too sold on Kerry for that specific Cabinet position.

Michael watching from Canada   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Hillary is tough and will be respected in the international community. She has also demonstrated (her campaigning for Obama during the election) that she will follow his leadership.

And if she doesn't get SoS, then she should also be considered for Department of Health.

Clinton Basher   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Hillary as Secretary of State is not change I can believe in.

NY   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Good, get her out of the state of NY…carpetbagger. That being said, I am sure she will be better off as Sec of State cause of her potential dealings for 8 yrs as First Lady.

Dan   November 14th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Hillary or Bill would make a great secretary of state.

Millie Bea   November 14th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Hillary is a rotten choice for Secretary of State. She has no international negotiating experience. All of her "35 years" of experience were NOT in international negotiations or military planning. She has proven to be a poor administrator on a large scale based on the huge organizational and directional failures of her campaign- which would be milquetoast in comparison to the job of Sec'y of State. Obama promised to fill jobs with the best qualified applicants- he should do just that. He owes Hillary nothing.

Michelle, PA   November 14th, 2008 9:34 am ET

I don't know how to feel about Hillary in a prominent role in the Obama Administration. On one hand, she would be well qualified to head State, or perhaps HHS where she could have a larger role in health care than she is likely to realistically expect in the Senate. I also believe Obama is the kind of person who wants people around him to offer him different options, not just yes-men (and women). On the other hand, I have the same reservation I had about Hillary during the Democratic primaries – Bill. There can only be one President at a time. Could Bill keep his fingers out of Obama's business? It may be unfair, but for Hillary the biggest drawback is her husband.

Give a break   November 14th, 2008 9:34 am ET

I truly disliked how the Clintons campaigned during the primaries but Obama is now President -Elect (Which I'm still celebrating) but its time to put all the hard feelings a side. No more Anti-Clinton comments and Nobama comments. Things are gravely serious now and if President-Elect Obama thinks she'll be good I trust his judgement Hey when a new football coach comes in they don't fire everyone on the former staff they bring in some new folks and keep the people that have experience and are willing to change.

Frostlanta   November 14th, 2008 9:33 am ET

I also think that this is pretty cool…

cool onlooker   November 14th, 2008 9:33 am ET

Sounds impossible. But you never know. No matter what the result, this is again a smart man's great move.

If H.C. takes it, I would respect her so much.

Obama'08′12

Simmy   November 14th, 2008 9:33 am ET

Sen Clinton is forgiven! She has a lot of insightful expertise that she can contribute to President Obama's administration and the world. If she becomes SOS, she'll do a wonderful job. Blessings to her!

Cammi317   November 14th, 2008 9:33 am ET

I can live with this. Secretary of State for Hillary, I can live with this.

tes   November 14th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Good move from President-elect Obama, & Senator H. Clinton is a good choice.

Mike   November 14th, 2008 9:32 am ET

The paybacks continue for Obama

Matt   November 14th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!! I voted for Obama to keep the Clintons out of government. Let us all pray her role will be something minor. She can stay a senator.

cattlecar   November 14th, 2008 9:32 am ET

There should be a place for Hillary in the Obama organization. Have her design the new flag. I bet she already has a portfolio of drawings going back to her college days.

Anonymous   November 14th, 2008 9:32 am ET

well deserving and fitting for Hillary!! Good Move Mr.Obama!

mike   November 14th, 2008 9:31 am ET

wow that would b\e so cool if she was in the administration!!!

Shalanda--Northern VA   November 14th, 2008 9:31 am ET

If he choose Sen. Hillary Clinton for Sec of State, WOW that would be GREAT!! GO OBAMA!! Pres. Obama's administration will be the best team ever!!

I can't wait til 20Jan09!!

President Barack Obama, that's sound wonderful.

Tyran   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I think Bill Richardson is a better choice, however, Hillary Clinton will be acceptable and would serve this country well as Seceratry of State. I understand that Obama has to surround himself with people that have the experience to get the job done. There is not time for on-the-job-training in these key positions. REMEMBER WHAT WE VOTED FOR!!! We want a change in the Bush policies and if Obama can deliver that then we have to support him. It doesn't matter how change looks, it's whether or not it can be achieved. Let all give the new President a chance to put his full cabinet together and see what direction he takes. If we can give Bush the benefit of the doubt after 911, then we can do the same for Obama after Bush!

David Snyder   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I believe that Obama would show an incredible amount of wisdom by selecting Hilary as his Secretary of State. If this happens, then my faith in the President-Elect will rise astronomically.

Roger   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

The more I think about it, the more I hope the President-Elect chooses Sen. Clinton for Secretary of State. We all know he derives great strength from the writings and example of Lincoln, and picking Sen. Clinton for this incredibly important position would make perfect sense. She is extremely knowledgeable, has excellent relations with many world leaders and I feel would bring tremendous credit and experience to our State Department.

sanya dennis   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

secretary of state confirmed????????
may be not!!!!!

america there you go, the best you can have

but obama be ware

another 24 in the making

Matt   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

This is a very bad move….she should be anything except secretary of state. If this happens, this will be the first mistake by the Obama administration.

Deanna Silva   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

YES<YES<YES. I would love to see hillary in that job. She has the smart's and everyone around the world love's her. This lady will be great. So Hillary you go for it. Let's get this country back on its feet. Thanks, Ms. Silva

RO   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

Excellent choice for Sec of State! She knows many of the world leaders..

KJL   November 14th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I wouldn't have voted for Clinton for president, even though I supported Obama, but I think she would make a great Secretary of State. She knows the players and she is smart and well-informed, but she is also tough.

sue   November 14th, 2008 9:29 am ET

I would hate to see Hillary leave the Senate.I feel she is a champion to the working people of America. If she leaves ,fewer people will hear our voices.

vobichlan, montreal   November 14th, 2008 9:29 am ET

It is not a matter of personal liking. It is in the best interest of the US that Senator Clinton has a large role in President-elect Obama's administration. The Democratic party would be united with Clinton in a major portfolio such as State, she will be most impressive at it. In world affairs it isn't just diplomacy, it is the personal prestige and stature that move and shake.

Steve   November 14th, 2008 9:28 am ET

Bill Richardson should be Secretary of State!! Hillary should be another type of top adviser!!

Rockford   November 14th, 2008 9:28 am ET

Oh I hope so… PLEASE Barry give her a job…
I would love to see her give up her NY Senate seat for a one and done presidential appointment…

bplaten   November 14th, 2008 9:28 am ET

Secretary of State would be great. It would hopefully keep her out of the country most of the time.

Helen Friend   November 14th, 2008 9:27 am ET

President-elect Obama would be better served if Mrs. Clinton became Speaker of the House. Mrs. Clinton is highly intelligent and is gracious in manner.

Mrs. Pelosi must be replaced because she is dense in brain matter and abrasive in her actions.

Thank you. Mrs. Friend

Ed Barczak   November 14th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Excellent Choice. I urge Sen Clinton to say Thank you but I am more
valuabe in the Senate. Best choice – Gov Richardson.l

Elizabeth, Austin   November 14th, 2008 9:26 am ET

I think Hillary would make a fabulous addition to the Obama cabinet, but I think the President Elect must be wise in his choice of position. I agree with many of the comments posted previously on CNN. Senator Clinton is probably not the best choice for Secretary of State, but is instead very well suited for a leadership role in Health Care reform. Govenor Bill Richardson or Senator Chuck Hagel would be outstanding choices for SOS, as both would offer unique qualifications to the position, and would represent the Change President Obama has been calling for.

its Over   November 14th, 2008 9:26 am ET

that's ok, after all she got experience dodging sniper fire. hahaha!!

RealityKing   November 14th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Hillary to replace Dr. Condoleezza Rice?? That would be a giant step backwards..

Todd Golden   November 14th, 2008 9:26 am ET

This is such a disappointing article. Misleading, short, and typical half-truth journalism. Your headline suggests that when we read the article we will learn something about whether Senator Clinton may or may not be a candidate for the next Sec. of State. However, upon reading your 8 line article one soon finds out that all you know is that a meeting took place. Quit providing misleading headlines just to pull in more readers. Give us something worth reading and worth out time.

Matthew Gomez   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Very interesting possibly. Although Clinton was not one of the top three people I thought of when I thought of the new Secretary of State (Richardson, Kerry, and Hagel being the more obvious choices), she certainly would be a good choice given her years of experience and her positive relationship with various nations (especially Europe). I think a post of this choice would also help those who wished Clinton had been the president-elect or vice-president elect in the Obama ticket.

Brian NYC   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

She's stayin' right here in NY.

Patriot from ATL GA   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Good going! We are happy to see progress being made. We are FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!

Saad from NJ   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

I love this man – and if he gets Hillary to be the Secretary of our State – I will love him even more.

REVOLUTION   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Just another ploy by the media to force Hillary on Barack, and down our throats. Please stop, and get a life. Nobody likes Hillary, and she has to try to do whatever the party needs to salvage her political career.

Nick   November 14th, 2008 9:25 am ET

I hope it's to extend an olive branch. While I don't think she would have been all that great of a president (but obviously a whole lot better than McCain), I think she would a great job in the administration.

Kim, PA   November 14th, 2008 9:24 am ET

awesome for her to be secretary of state!!!!!!!

Ed Stack   November 14th, 2008 9:24 am ET

Obama-Clinton………..the "A" Team……..am going to throw up!

joe   November 14th, 2008 9:24 am ET

keep your friends close but your enemies closer. this was clearly brokered when she suspended her campaign

young and informed independant   November 14th, 2008 9:23 am ET

I KNEW IT!!!!!!

i am so happy……

BK   November 14th, 2008 9:23 am ET

It would be a good idea to include her, I think. Remember VP isn't the only position a President picks, and arguably not even the most important.

GINA, OHIO   November 14th, 2008 9:23 am ET

GIT ER DONE HILLARY!!!!!!!! I THINK OBAMA SHOULD PICK HILLARY!! IT WOULD BE AN EXCELLANT CHOICE!!!! SHE'S SURELY QUALIFIED AND A WOMAN FOR THIS IS OUTSTANDING!!

r sisk, nevada   November 14th, 2008 9:23 am ET

I would LOVE to see Hillary as Secretary of State!!!!! I know Obama and this nation need her in the Senate but NY is a liberal state and should replace her with another Dem. Go Hillary.

charles carter   November 14th, 2008 9:23 am ET

Leave her in the senate. Colin Powell would be better.

Jackie   November 14th, 2008 9:22 am ET

I think she would make a wonderful Sec. of State. He needs her in his administration if he wants to win the next election. She is well known and liked around the world and we could see some real changes. Let's forget their differences on the campaign trail….that was politics. Now is the time to unite and move the country forward.

Don   November 14th, 2008 9:22 am ET

So, does this mean no more Senator Clinton? Wonder when her campaign debt will get payed for this little move?

ironmadonna   November 14th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Does anyone recall how Mrs. Clinton turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to her husband's policies, personal decisions and behaviors for so many years?..How she got into the US Senate?..Does anyone remember anything about the Clinton regime in Arkansas???Whitewater??..I was never a "Hillary" fan and guess what? I'm a woman!..Blind ambition is blind regardless of the reproductive system with which one is born..Senator Clinton should feel humbly endowed by the invitation to meet with President Elect Obama for a cabinet position..I have to go through that internet application process and I haven't committed any acts of political corruption..I have behaved badly though…Perhaps I could become president, too????

Kevin   November 14th, 2008 9:21 am ET

THAT is why I did not vote for Barak Obama. It didn't take a genius to figure that Hillary would be along for the ride. Yup, here she is again, worming her way in. Positioning herself for 2012 already.

Daniel from Chicago   November 14th, 2008 9:21 am ET

such IRONY! If I were her, I'd stay far away from all of this hype!! Especially after how badly she was treated by EVERYONE(media, Obamabots, democrats aka "the Big Boys Club" because she was running against Obama.

Richie   November 14th, 2008 9:20 am ET

What's with all the leaking from the "Obama transition team"? Is this really his people, who never breathed a word about anything during the election process? Or is it the people of the other politicians that are now involved?

Maggie in NYS   November 14th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State!!!

Mile Hy   November 14th, 2008 9:19 am ET

I heard she was being considered for Sec of State. That would be a mistake. She has a lot of seniority in the Senate and who knows who would replace her. If Obama wants to make a statement he should offer Sec of State to Colin Powell.

Alex   November 14th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Ok, is it me, but I am a getting concerned that this "change" we have been promised, is not "original" and "new" thinking with "new blood." But in reality a throwback to the Clinton Era, with a lot of Clinton's insiders?

Didn't Bush Jr. do the same thing? Didn't he bring a lot of his father's cronies back? And we all saw where that got us. I am not hating on Obama, but I am getting concerned that he isn't really driving change right now…just bringing back the Clinton's and their people. Not all are bad, but man, CHANGE was the mantra.

Now, I am sure he'll appoint some original people, I am hoping Warren Buffet, but all I have heard is "ex-Clinton" and "Clinton" this and that. How do we let Obama know we want REAL change, not just a change of administration, and throwback to the Clintons???!?!?!? ANYONE?

DP   November 14th, 2008 9:19 am ET

I hope HRC works with BO with honesty and understanding, putting aside resentments from the primaries.

Michele   November 14th, 2008 9:18 am ET

And the the Clinton haters begin in 5…..4….3……2………1

NOVA   November 14th, 2008 9:18 am ET

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton would be a good choice to help move forward in foreign relations.

I also think she would be great for the Health Department, too. Although I voted for Barack Obama, one of the issues I didn't agree on was healthcare. I think Hillary Clinton's plan a bit better.

Let's see what happens!

Janey/michigan   November 14th, 2008 9:18 am ET

Hillary is now debt-free and hopefully will get the job. She deserves it after kissing Obama's rear for months. No Presidential job in her future after pushing him over the finish line. I am very concerned that the dems created this crises of the American people purposely (Fannie and freddie)–to steal this election and it worked at our expense.

Scott   November 14th, 2008 9:17 am ET

That would just be the best thing ever. I would have voted for her for President if I had the chance, I think she would make an excellent Sec.of State and it would be a great chance for her to do an amazing amount of good!

Max   November 14th, 2008 9:16 am ET

"Change". Ha!

Obama supporter #2   November 14th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I would love to see Clinton & Palin run against one another in a Presidential election.

And, why are all the "right wing" groups/people coming out so hard against Obama like he's gonna screw the country up even more than Bush has done thus far. Calm down people! Can he please get into office first?

PA Republican for Obama   November 14th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I would love to see her take an active role. Even if she ultimately doesn't serve in the cabinet and stays in the Senate. There are a lot of very good, very intelligent and very skilled people out there who definately should be utilized in bringing this country out of the dark ages of the past eight years and moving us forward. I count Hillary Clinton to be among those people.

TX Vet   November 14th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I think HIllary Clinton really proved herself before Obama's nomination and after. She's tough, smart, and can support the larger vision after she was denied the top spot. Pretty admirable. I'd like to see her in Obama's administration.

Jackie   November 14th, 2008 9:15 am ET

So its true. I think he owes her but he should give her a role where she will be very effective. I trust his judgement though.
May God grant our dear president-elect wisdom and understanding.

Love you Barack!!!

Mary   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

I like it!! Bring her on!

georgia   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

CNN, you're ahead of yourselves. You keep asking, in various formats, why Sarah Palin is still a hot topic, why the Clinton-Obama relationship is so intriguing, etc. Perhaps it's because you continue to "report" that which doesn't need to be reported. If Hillary Clinton is selected to be Secretary of State, you've got a story. If her name is merely "discussed," there's no real need for all the analysis, is there? I watched your newscast this morning, including the several minutes you devoted to rehashing the Clinton-Obama "feud," ostensibly as backdrop for this Secretary of State "story." Why not wait until you have something to report?

Karen, Arkansas   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

So wonderful to think that Hillary could become Secretary of State!!! I know she would do a marvelous job for our country. Plus the fact that Hillary knows that Africa is a continent not a country.

Dennis   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Awesome! What a team!!!

LyonsPhilly   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Keep Condoleeza Rice. Hillary for healthcare.

marc   November 14th, 2008 9:14 am ET

It will be great for uor nation.

Bill Clinton   November 14th, 2008 9:13 am ET

I'm back.

California Gold   November 14th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Interesting prospects swirling around.

NYer   November 14th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Looks like BARRY has some butt kissing to do. Actually, BARRY has NO IDEA what to do and needs help so he goes to Hillary. Since BARRY is now running for re-election, he had better give Hillary a job!!

Poor Hillary, she now has to bow down to BARRY – LMAO !!!!

Turn Texas BLUE   November 14th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Keep writing stories of Sarah Palin, and keep interviewing her. SHE IS STARTING TO BE THE CANCER OF THE GOP TICKET! FOR REAL NOW! All by herself she will take down the GOP! so all you Republican it is not to late for you to change over to a winning team! DEMOCRATS!

Angie-OHIO   November 14th, 2008 9:12 am ET

SOS would be a GREAT FIT for Senator Clinton. She is strong and very, very intelligent. If this is so we are in for a GREAT OBAMA CABINET.

HILARY FOR SOS!!!!!!!!!!!

Mercedes   November 14th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Yes, yes, yes!!!!!

pierre   November 14th, 2008 9:12 am ET

about time!

Tim   November 14th, 2008 9:11 am ET

If Hillary had won she could have named Obama as President of the bake sale.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   November 14th, 2008 9:10 am ET

NO HILLARY…… CHANGE WE NEED

Bruce   November 14th, 2008 9:09 am ET

Chooing her for any cabinet postion, especially sec of state would be a great move on Obama's part. The question is does she want it.?

A Boston   November 14th, 2008 9:09 am ET

Perfect spot for her.

Frank DeCandido   November 14th, 2008 9:08 am ET

Two positives about this move – she will be out of the country most of the time and she will be out of New York.
